Teams ready to return to hardwood with state title dreams on the back of their minds
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR CORRESPONDENT
As the air begins to find more and more chill each day, local middle schools and high schools begin to move their sports activities from the outdoors to indoors as basketball, wrestling, and swimming now will take the spotlight off football, soccer, and track and field events.
All five area high schools have been working hard to prepare for what they hope will the fulfillment of a dream much like what the Hampton Bulldogs achieved during last season when they traveled to Murfreesboro and returned home with a gold ball and the title of state champion.
Although the Bulldogs return the majority of that team, they will now have to face moving from Class 1-A up to Class 2-A based on the enrollment at the school for the year. This means that the road will be detoured away from North Greene and now will take the Bulldogs to South Greene, Chuckey Doak, and West Greene - a tough road for any team.
The Elizabethton Lady Cyclones and Hampton Lady Bulldogs will also be in the hunt to make a return trip to the Murphy Center in 2023-2024 as the Lady Bulldogs will now face the same dilemma as their male counterparts having to move up to Class 2-A while the Lady Cyclones must do some rebuilding after losing all five of their regular starters to graduation.
All of the county teams seem to be fairly young while some are awaiting injured players to return and help strengthen their program.
Basketball is a well-supported sport throughout Carter County and Elizabethton and the unknowns heading into the season is what makes for some exciting games especially when its played by county rivals.
Regardless of whether one team, two teams, or even more make it to the state tournament or not is irrelevant, but giving each community the opportunity to gather inside a nice, warm gym with a bag of popcorn, nachos, and a good, cold Coke or Pepsi to bring each community together is what makes basketball the sport it is.
Support your team, cheer on each player, pat a cheerleader on the back, and tell your coach well done each and every chance that you have. Above all, leave the harsh words, inappropriate actions, and the negativity at home. Above all show good sportsmanship and enjoy the time with family and friends.
To Cloudland, Elizabethton, Hampton, Happy Valley, and Unaka - best of luck on the new season from the Elizabethton Star as you pursue whatever the goals that you have set for the 2023-2024 basketball season may be.
As always, we are proud of all of you!

Cyclones hoping to establish team chemistry early
BY IVAN SANDERS
STAR CORRESPONDENT
Just like mixing the right combination of chemicals leads to a perfect lab project, the Elizabethton Cyclones are hoping to find the right mixture of players that can gel into a highly competitive team by February when it counts the most.
With a handful of players who saw starting roles at various times during the 2022-2023 season, Cyclone head coach Lucas Honeycutt is counting on that core group of players to be the base of the chemistry to lead the Cyclones this season.
Gary Harrison, Tee Blevins, and Matt Clemson.
“We have a couple guys who were in starting roles at times in Mac Paulson, Will Churchill, Andrew Barnett, and Jackson Hobbs,” said Honeycutt. “Paulson was the only returning player that started consistently last season. This is a very balanced group as we don’t have anyone that stands out above the rest, but they are all solid players and it is exciting to see them compete in practice for playing time in games. Playing time is wide open and they’ll have to push one another to bring out the best in each other. We value team chemistry and are looking to find the right rotation that can help us win when it counts.”
With a strong conference featuring Tennessee High, Sullivan East, Unicoi Co., and Crockett, the Cyclones won’t have much time for redos and the formula has already been put forth by Honeycutt.
“We want to play fast on offense and physical on defense,” Honeycutt said. “We want to be the most fundamental team in our league. Our league will be very talented again and we know we will be playing an underdog role, but we feel like we have the pieces to surprise some people this season. We expect our returning players - Paulson, Churchill, Hobbs, Barnett, Luke Whaley, and Zach Bates, to carry the load of minutes but know we’ll need some help from our junior and sophomore class.”
Other players Honeycutt is hoping to see step up and earn more playing time include Jeriah Griffin, Mason Bowling, Hudson Smith, Hudson Pate, Jackson Buckles, Nathan Bailey, Justin Whitehead, Zack Wallin, and Justius Wallin.
Honeycutt has 16 years total coaching experience with 11 years at EHS. He has a career record of 204-129.

Lady Cyclones look for returning talent to pick up where they left off
BY IVAN SANDERS
STAR CORRESPONDENT
Losing a stellar class of seniors that led the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones to a successful showing at last year’s state tournament in Murfreesboro hurts but now a new group of hungry Lady Cyclones stand at the ready to pick up the torch and carry it on for the girls basketball program at EHS.
With a season group of veterans who played huge roles over the course of the last couple of years, the one thing that this group will have to do and do quickly is figure out exactly what their identity is.
“We have some veterans that have played huge roles for us in the past seasons, but injuries this summer have hit us hard,” said Lady Cyclone head coach Lucas Andrews. “We will be a young team that will have to figure out their identity quick to be able to compete in this league.”
Andrews will be looking to returning post player
Marlee Mathena and guard Michelle Shields to help put some points on the board while waiting for senior guard Reiley Whitson to get cleared to play after a summer knee injury has hampered her preparation for her final season.
Another player who will be counted on will be Jamira Smalls whose size on the inside will make it difficult to handle the sophomore post player.
Andrews is entering his 15th season as a coach and eighth season as a head coach with five of those being at the helm of the Lady Cyclones. He has a career record of 139-83.
The outlook on the league for the new season from Andrews shows Crockett and Unicoi Co. to battle it out for the top spot while Tennessee High and Elizabethton will fit somewhere in the mix along with the Lady Patriots of Sullivan East.

Defending state champion Bulldogs to have hands full moving to Region 1-2A
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR CORRESPONDENT
It goes without saying that the Hampton Bulldogs would be almost a shoo-in to be in Murfreesboro in the 2023-2024 basketball season if the TSSAA reclassification hadn’t moved the Bulldogs to Region 1-2A, a move that puts the Bulldogs in the same conference as South Greene, Chuckey Doak, Johnson Co., and cross-town rival Happy Valley.
Hampton head coach Ned Smith knows what the move will entail and now the work really begins for his group of seniors who have aspirations to make it two consecutive state championship years.
HEAD COACH:
Ned Smith
Assistant Coaches:
Mike Matheson, Wesley Murray
“I think moving up to Region 1-2A that the athletes are going to be quicker and stronger,” said Smith. “We have worked in the weight room and on speed drills and things like that so that we can try to match that.”
According to Smith, losing high-scoring state tournament MVP Caden Buckles will leave some shoes to fill however there is a pretty well-stocked cupboard of athletes that have tasted competition at the state level and will be ready to compete regardless which conference they might be in.
“Coming back from last year’s team that played in the state we have Hayden Campbell, Michael Anspaugh, Dylan Trivett, Chance Point, JJ McElyea, and Geno Carrico coming back from the state tournament and we have some kids that had a great summer as well like Tuff Robinson, Bryce Fagan, and Evan Porter,” said Smith. “We just had a real good summer and I think one of our strengths is going to be that we can go 10 or 11 deep and this year I think that we can get up and down the floor. We have to get our chemistry going and play together. These kids have played a lot of basketball and a lot of summer ball last year. We have to get into the gym and get to work.
“The kids are going to have to step up and take those shots. We are going to shoot it and get up and down the court with it.”
Smith knows that being the new kid on the block and especially a state champion that the bullseye will be on his team’s back every night they take the floor.
“Our conference is really tough,” said Smith. “Johnson Co. is tough while South Greene and Chuckey Doak will have another big strong team. Night in and night out, its a bigger conference and you have to be able to win your home games and hopefully steal one or two on the road.”

New head coach, same desire for Hampton Lady ‘Dogs
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR CORRESPONDENT
Even though there have been a change or two at Hampton High School when it comes to the Lady Bulldogs basketball team, ultimately the same desire exists for the team and that is a return trip to Murfreesboro and the state basketball championship where the Lady Bulldogs saw their season end to conclude the 20222023 season.
Athletic Director Dewayne Humphrey has stepped into the driver’s seat of the team after Brandon Carpenter stepped down after the state tournament and Hampton now is ready to make it back-to-back runs.
HEAD COACH:
Dwayne Humphrey
Assistant Coaches: Carrie Jenkins, Deani Smith and Heather Creed
“We spent the summer with the girls talking about what their expectations were and what they wanted to get out of their senior year this season and our expectations are like they are every other year in that we want to make a run to the state tournament,” said Humphrey. “Our senior leadership is going to be key and we are going to lean on them. We have two back from the starting five last year. We are going to really look at Taylor (Berry) and Macy (Henry) to lead the way.”
The Lady Bulldogs track to the big dance will change in 2023-2024 as with an increase in student numbers at the school, Hampton has been shuttled into the Region
1-2A conference where they no longer have to deal with North Greene and Unaka, but now will have to tangle with South Greene and Chuckey Doak who are always tough to play against.
“We are stepping into a new conference where we have to play a tough South Greene team, Johnson Co. has a new coach and they are excited from what I can tell and are ready to play. Chuckey Doak is coming along and of course we have Happy Valley down the road and that is always a tough matchup for us,” said Humphrey. “We have played everyone in 2-A the last few years and the regional tournament will look a lot different for us this season.”
One thing that the team will also be dealing with is the pressure they may feel to make it a second straight year to the state playoffs which can put an extra weight on a team’s shoulders.
“I think the girls feel like they have a little more pressure on them because they want to get back to the state tournament and play at the glass house again,” Humphrey said.
Humphrey said that he sees South Greene, Chuckey Doak, Johnson Co., as the possible three top teams in the conference and hopes the Lady Bulldogs are in the mix somewhere.

Happy Valley looking to turn early bumps into success by season end
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR CORRESPONDENT
For Happy Valley Warrior head coach Shane Williams, it isn’t hard seeing that the early part of the 2023-2024 basketball season may be filled with some bumps and bruises experience wise, but that won’t stop the head coach entering his second season preparing his team to be competitive by tournament time.
“Our expectations are just like every year and that is to go out and compete as hard as we can and play together and play as a team,” said Williams during the team’s media day. :We have some young guys that are going to have to get in the mix and we will take our lumps but we have to get some ex-

perience early on in the year and after that we should be on track to compete. We just have to get through this first month and get everyone’s feet under them and then we should be all right.”
With the entry of defending Class 1-A state champion Hampton into the ranks of Region 1 - 2A, the conference just went from being tough to one of extremely tough and that will take having leaders to step up and show the way for the Warrior program.
One of those leaders Williams will be looking to is senior Dakota Grindstaff who has seen plenty of action on the court for the Warriors and will need to set the pace for the 20232024 edition.
SATURDAY-SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 25-26, 2023 PAGE 13 WWW.ELIZABETHTON.COM
Shane Williams
“Dakota Grindstaff is going to be our main guy,” said Williams. “We are always harping on the fact that everyone needs to lead but Dakota is the only senior that came back from last year that has played tons of minutes. We have Joey Sowards who played football and didn’t have a chance to play basketball last year. The leadership is going to fall a lot on Dakota.”
Williams was asked what the key was for the Warriors to have a successful season,
“I think the key for us is just like everyone else in the fact we have to play good defense and rebound the basketball and take care of the basketball which was our big Achilles heel last year where we turned it over a lot,” he said. “We have some decent guards in now and some other players that have developed some so we have shored that up a little bit.”
This year’s conference reminds Williams of the day when collegiate powers like Georgetown, Villanova, North Carolina, Wake Forest, and Duke were so stout and dominated the ranks of college basketball.
“Our conference is tough - it’s a head banger,” Williams said. “It’s like the Big East and ACC back in the day where they beat and grind. Johnson County is physical, Chuckey Doak is physical, and Hampton just won the state so I am going to enjoy having a state champion in the league. And you can’t forget about South Greene who have tall, big kids so it’s going to be a fun, tough year for us for sure.”

2023-2024 Happy Valley Warrior Schedule
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR CORRESPONDENT
Lady Warrior head coach Dana Hill often sounds like a broken record during pre-season media time as the coach entering his fourth season on Warrior Hill is faced with taking a young team and mold them into a competitive one by season’s end.
The judge is still out on the 2023-2024 Lady Warriors but Hill is leaning on the hope that this year’s team can be fast learners.
“This is one of those teams that could go either way,” Hill said. “It’s going to depend on a lot. I said the same thing last year in the fact that we are young. We are going to be starting a freshman no matter which way we go. Our season is going to be dictated by which way those freshmen pick up and learn what we are doing and fall into our system the way we need them to fall. It’s just one of those things where we are dealing with numbers again. You just do the best you can and that’s all we can do.”
One important bullet that Hill carries in his coaching pocket is the presence of senior Marcida Moore who will be wrapping up her career this season on Warrior Hill and the leadership that she will bring to the court will be invaluable.
“This will be Marcida Moore’s fourth year with us and Cayden Anderson is really stepping up and leading,” said Hill. “Marcida has been more vocal in everything that we have been doing as of late. We are going to look to her for a lot of leadership since she is the only senior that we have. Cayden just has basketball sense and gets a lot of that from her
dad and plays extremely hard. Even Josie Zeoli is going to be expected to step up and lead us as well. So, between the three of those we are going to have to get the babies going and keep us in the ball game.”
Hill is known to like a defense that plays up tempo and he believes that this year’s team will have the wheels to be able to play at a faster clip.
“I would like to think that we are a lot faster and quicker than what we have been in year’s past which is something that we would eventually like to get to,” said Hill. “Right now, we are just in the learning steps of being able to know where to go and what to do. I would like to see us play a little more up tempo than what we have.”
The Lady Warriors will have an extra addition to the conference tab this season with Hampton coming on board to Region 1-2A. That only strengthens the importance of getting up to speed for the young players on this year’s Lady Warrior squad.
“Any time you talk about the conference, you have to talk about South Greene,” said Hill. “South Greene will be a typical South Greene team. I expect Chuckey-Doak to be an extremely good team this year. They had a young team last year but made a run late in the year to make it to the regionals. And then you have Hampton coming in. Those three teams right there are going to be tough teams and from there down it could be just about anyone after that. Hopefully, we will put some pieces together and at least put together a run to the regionals.”

Unaka boys look to challenge in Region 1 1-A
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR CORRESPONDENT
The Unaka Rangers hope that with the departure of the Hampton Bulldogs to Region 1 2-A that the boys from Stoney Creek will be able to challenge for the Region 1-A title after having to battle with their cross-county rivals the last few years.
Head coach Aaron Dugger certainly has the size to make it hard on any team and will be leaning hard on senior big man Marcus Shomaker to set the tone on the inside.
The Rangers still will have to deal with an always tough North Greene team along with University High and an up and coming Cloudland team to find its way through the conference for the upcoming season and battle for a top-four finish
to advance to regional competition.
Others that Ranger fans can keep an eye for the upcoming season are juniors Collin and Jackson Deaton along with fellow junior Mason Wilson.
Unaka also will feature 6’8 freshman John Hardin who can be imposing in the middle with his sheer height. Hardin is expected to push nearly 7’0 by the time he fills out his growth plates.
Their will be some growing pains for the Rangers as they are loaded with mainly sophomores and juniors as Shomaker is the only senior on this year’s squad.
Dugger, however, has been around the block a time or two and knows how to bring the best out of his Ranger players.

The 2023 Unaka Lady Rangers
Lady Rangers will need team effort to succeed on hardwood
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR CORRESPONDENT
The Lady Rangers of Unaka have been accustomed to looking for Lyndie Ramsey to carry them on both ends of the court for the last four years, but now Ramsey has exchanged her maroon and white for the blue and gold of ETSU and the Lady Rangers will be faced with utilizing the skills that each girl brings to the floor.
Lady Ranger head coach Kenneth Chambers knows the loss of Ramsey will sting a bit early on but has all the confidence in the world that his team will finally pull the pieces together when it counts the most.
“With us losing Lyndie Ramsey is a big difference for us,” said Chambers. “We have pretty much our whole team back minus one or two but we are going to have to make up a lot of scoring and a lot of defense. The kids that we have are really hard working kids - they practice hard, they want to be good, and I have great confidence in them. We might not be world beaters but they are going to put out their best effort on the court.”
Chambers will be counting on a couple of players in particular to step
up into a leadership role as the new season begins.
“Haley Taylor is a senior guard who is pretty vocal and tough-nosed - she is 5’3 but plays like she is 6’0 tall in her mind anyways,” said Chambers. “Katlyn Dugger is a sophomore that is really coming on and will have to handle the basketball for us quite a bit. But the truth is that it is really going to have to be a group effort to do a little bit of this and a little bit of that. We don’t have no size. Keyona Hague is going to have to play inside for us a lot and she is around 5’6 to 5’7. She is tough and she will give everything that she has got. We just have to make it up on being tough and getting after it while playing together as a team.”
The four-team conference should once again come down between North Greene and Cloudland according to Chambers.
“Cloudland and North Greene is going to be tough,” Chambers said. “University High with Bud Hazelwood as coach should be improved as well.”

2023-2024 Cloudland Highlanders roster
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR CORRESPONDENT
If there is one word to describe what to expect out of the Cloudland Highlanders on the basketball court this year will be patience as the Highlanders will be a very young team with only five upperclassmen and the remainder of the team being freshmen.
Coach Spencer Nave is remaining optimistic that his team can pull things together toward the end of the season to be in the mix to earn a regional berth. This will be Nave’s third season at the helm of the Cloudland squad.
“We are young - we have one senior, two juniors, and two sophomores and the rest is all freshman,” said Nave.”It’s kind of a rebuilding year, but we have some basketball players only with guys that just played basketball all summer and have been in the gym so I am hoping that we are going to be a little more skilled than last year and be better on that end.”
Nave feels like that if his team will put in the work and effort that they will be able to sneak upon some people and steal a few wins along the way.
“The biggest thing is playing hard and giving great effort every night,” said Nave. “We are a little undersized and our league has some big people in it so we have to be gritty and do the little things that nobody else wants to do and that has to be the key and to get better
every game.”
Nave will be looking toward a pair of players to set the tone for the rest of the Highlanders on the hardwood this season.
“We are going to be looking for Nick Carroway - he is probably going to be my predominant scorer,” Nave said. “He had a really good summer. We finally get big Dylan McClellan back, Big D we call him, and we are hoping that he gets medically released today after tearing his ACL. He has been working real hard and that is the two that I am looking forward to watching this season.”
Just like county counterpart Unaka, the Highlander skipper knows that the team will be looking up at their top front runners in University High and North Greene who will be returning several key players with more experience.
“The conference is going to be tough,” said Nave. “I think that University High is going to be the favorite because they got everybody back. I watched them play this summer and they are tough. North Greene will once again be tough and will be the two front runners. I think that us and Unaka will be battling it out for the three and four spot. The guard play for University High is phenomenal and Britton is back at North Greene who has come back and they always seem to reload down there. It is going to be better now that Hampton has moved to 2-A I will tell you that.”

Cloudland Lady Highlanders
The 2023 Cloudland Lady Highlanders Core of seniors to lead Lady ‘Landers run in 1-A
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR CORRESPONDENT
Most teams only dream of going to the state basketball championship in Murfreesboro, but this year’s Cloudland Lady Highlanders have been to the dance and knows what it takes to get there.
The question now is can a core group of senior players who have taken the court at the Murphy Center can finish what they started when they came in as freshmen in leading the girls from Roan Mountain back to the same stage.
“We are going to be led by four seniors,” said Cloudland head coach Matt Birchfield. “A couple of them are coming back from injuries.Saharra McKinney, Ryan Turbyfill, Izabella Christman, and Bethany Sluder will be looked to help lead our team this season.”
One of the things that Birchfield is counting on is that some of his younger players can get game experience and be able to help take some of the pressure of in building some depth off the Cloudland bench.
“I think that we have some young kids that need to play well,” Birchfield said. “Our seniors need to lead us with some scoring from McKinney, Turbyfill, and Christman to carry us on the inside.”
It will take all hands on deck as although there are only four teams in Region 1 1-A, the competition will be just as stiff as any other conference that may field more than just four teams.
“It’s always a tough conference as North Greene is going to be really good again with some size that other people don’t have,” said Birchfield. “Unaka lost a good player but they still are going to be really good. U-H has a new coach and I think that you will see a much better system there as well. There is just four of us but it’s going to be a really tough league. You have got to be ready to play every night.”
The formula is a simple one according to Birchfield.
“You have to take care of your home court and get some wins on the road if you can and see how it falls by February,” Birchfield said.
