Welcome to August 2013 At last! As we write the sun is shining and we hope you will be able to take some time to sit outside and read the August edition of Pro Landscaper. During July we were involved in the judging of the Office Plant of the Year – eFIG’s initiative as part of the National Plants at Work Week, and we were invited to a fantastic evening celebrating the Leicestershire based nursery James Coles 100 years of trading – a great achievement. Q Lawns celebrated its 20th birthday with a well thought out event, combining celebrations with the important topic of sustainability. We were also really excited to be invited to

NEWS SHED Q Lawns Sustainable Landscaping Event Q Lawns held their Sustainable Landscaping Event in July which was also part of the company’s 20th birthday celebrations. Chris Carr, Sales & Marketing Manager, welcomed guests and introduced Wayne Grills, BALI Chief Operations Officer, who talked about Tackling the Skills Shortage and the recent RHS Horticulture Matters report; he questioned why we are experiencing the current crisis, and what can be done to turn things around. A lively debate ensued, as education representatives and industry

management discussed what was needed. Helen Bostock from the RHS followed, by discussing the RHS Gardening for Schools and the Perfect for Pollinators campaigns and finally Tom Hart-Dyke spoke passionately about the World Garden at his family home in Kent and his love for England and its plants. After lunch attendees were treated to a tour around the farm which showed the ways in which Q Lawns have changed their site in favour of sustainability and biodiversity. They were also able to watch turf being harvested, cut and rolled ready to be sent out. Following the tour there was more time for networking and a very impressive bright green Q Lawns birthday cake was cut. www.qlawns.co.uk

The Landscape Group forms new Five-Year Grounds Maintenance Partnership with Weaver Vale Housing Trust The Landscape Group is thrilled to have been appointed by Weaver Vale Housing Trust as grounds maintenance partner for five years. The new contract was awarded to The Landscape Group following a competitive tender process which required interested parties to demonstrate relevant experience of delivering high quality services to housing association customers, whilst also providing good value for money. Martin Neighbour, Contract Manager for The Landscape Group said “We are extremely pleased to be working in partnership with Weaver Vale Housing Trust and will work closely with local caretakers

on improving areas for residents. One of our new initiatives is to implement a pedestrian sweeper to sweep and tidy footpaths, which will improve the overall appearance of sites.” www.thelandscapegroup.co.uk

Frosts Landscapes equal opportunity accreditation Frosts Landscapes have achieved the Equality Accredited Employment Award. Accreditation followed a one day audit carried out by an independent assessor (E.A.S.) where policies, procedures and working practices were checked. Several randomly selected employees were interviewed, including Landscape

‘Looking after regional members will be paramount within this role’ Pro Landscaper interviews new BALI North West regional Chairman Matthew Spedding, EasiGrass National Account Manager Congratulations on your appointment Matt, when do you take up your new role? I officially took up the role in early June as soon as EasiGrass became full contracting BALI members. What are your plans to invigorate the region, to get the members engaged and become more involved and active? Firstly in the middle of August I plan to run a relaunch celebration, and bring together all the members, key suppliers and partners. The event will be something the industry hasn’t seen before, which is really exciting and will relaunch the BALI brand in the region.

How will you fit your BALI role around your commitment with EasiGrass? I currently spend a lot of time with landscape companies of all sizes trying to help them win more business and help market their companies. I’m hoping a lot of the skills I use running the EasiGrass partnership network will bring similar benefits to BALI members. With the new structure at BALI your key accounts skills will be extremely important... Looking after regional members will be paramount within this role and fits perfectly with the way I work.

I understand what is required of me as it’s a major part of my current role with EasiGrass and something I really enjoy doing. What are the main goals for you? I really want to concentrate on helping BALI members win more business, generate sales and balance that with promoting the BALI brand. I also think that some BALI members could benefit from marketing and sales assistance and this is one of the areas I will be attacking at the relaunch. Matthew Spedding matt@easigrass.com

Quadron Services joins Green Connect Quadron Services has joined Green Connect; an exciting new company for anyone working or volunteering in parks and green spaces. Green Connect’s Director, Karen Hughes said “I am passionate about the value of our parks and green spaces both in our towns and the countryside. I want those of us who work and volunteer in them

to learn from each other, sharing information, problems and solutions right across the South West.” Quadron’s Managing Director, Clive Ivil said “Quadron prides itself on Cultivating Sustainable Green Communities. We are pleased to become part of Green Connect because it will ensure we interact with the communities

whose green spaces we manage, to work together towards a sustainable future. We look forward to connecting and sharing experiences with other supporters.” www.quadronenvironment.com www.green-connect.weebly.com

NURSERY NEWS Taking Stock August at The Plantation is generally a slightly quieter month for us so it’s an opportune time to take stock. We have time to reflect on the late but very busy successful spring, time to analyse the sales trends and time to prepare for hopefully a very busy autumn. Traditionally we did our annual stock take in January but scraping snow off labels, short daylight hours and freezing conditions resulted in us rescheduling to August. It’s also time to reserve and place some of our substantial orders for plants for the rest of this year and for early 2014. Kevin White, General Manager, is already hunting down key pieces for various clients, “By reserving the specimen plants now we can be confident of securing the best quality stock to meet our customers’ requirements.” We also encourage our customers to take stock; it’s the time of year when we all use our gardens more so a good time to look for new plants to fill the gaps and enhance existing schemes. Lots of exciting new projects to look forward to but for now it’s back to counting stock.......304, 305, 306, 307...

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park –

a botanic garden without the entrance fee Exactly one year after the spectacular Olympic opening ceremony, on 27 of July the first part of the newly named Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park re-opened to the public: the picturesque and green North Park Hub; with remaining areas in the South Park due to open next spring. Rose Hales took a tour of the park with David Lucas from Atkins, Alistair Bayford from The Landscape Group, and Des Smith from Willerby Landscapes. Transforming the park from an Olympic venue to a useable public green space has been no small feat; although the reopened North Park greatly resembles the similar Games-time space, it has quietly evolved into a sustainable, highly designed natural landscape. More perennials have been added to the famous wildflower meadows, which are being allowed to bloom naturally, and will self-seed and re-flower with limited maintenance. A key focus has always been sustainability and flexibility, which

and its future – always asking what each space will be used for. No one is precious about the park, or making claims as to how it should be used. Refreshingly, it is genuinely understood to be a public space, to be used as the public see fit. It has been designed to be robust, and on-going maintenance will ensure its survival and continual improvement. The park represents true green infrastructure, not only will the wetland area in the North Park

It has quietly evolved into a sustainable, highly designed natural landscape has become of paramount importance during the park’s transformation. The challenge has been to let the park alter along with its changing use, while changing as little as possible. Where the Olympic venue needed to accommodate large numbers of people, the redeveloped parklands will accommodate fewer visitors but

over a much longer time frame, and with a greater sense of freedom within the park. Large access bridges have been replaced by countless smaller ones, providing access from all the adjoining communities. To reduce waste, dismantled decking has been used to make planters. In keeping with sustainability and trying to address the skills gap shortage, the park aims to take on 50 apprentices in the next two years. The landscapers stressed how important flexibility is to the park

protect thousands of homes from flood damage, but wildlife and birdlife are a strong indicator of the success of the wetland area as a functioning ecosystem in which the park can grow and develop. Much of the planting is recovering impressively, although the park will only really reach its full potential in a few years’ time, when it has been allowed to mature adequately.

August 2013

eFIG’s Office Plant of the Year eFIG has recently announced 2013’s Office Plant of the Year. The accolade went to the Spathiphyllum (or Peace Lily). This annual event started in 2010, so this year’s winner is only the fourth plant to be awarded the honour. The idea behind the award is to get people thinking about which plant works best in the workplace. The criteria changes a little from year to year so that the plants have to fulfil certain conditions to win. The award raises the awareness of plants in the workplace and why having them there is a good thing. Most of the general public – including the workforce and its managers – don’t know about ‘interior landscapers’. It’s a little known concept. Even in the workplace, often there is no evidence apart from the immaculate potted plants. This is because many big businesses insist on installation and maintenance being carried out before the workforce arrives for the day. The Office Plant of the Year award was introduced to make everyone more aware of this service and not least, why they should have plants in the workplace. The process starts by members nominating plants, which can then be voted for on the eFIG website www.efig.eu.com. After a couple of months of voting, the three shortlisted plants are then scrutinised by an independent panel of judges and the winner is promoted by the association throughout the year. This year the judges made the final decision and chose the Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) as eFIG’s Office

Plant of the Year. “The Peace Lily fits all the criteria,” commented Lisa and Jim Wilkinson of Pro Landscaper magazine and two of the judging panel. “Not only is it a beautiful looking plant giving a sense of calm, but it also cleans the air. And it requires little maintenance.” It sounds like a landscaper’s dream. Garden designer Claudia de Yong was unable to attend the judging but explained that the Peace Lily got her vote because it had ‘great flow’. These opinions were seconded by eFIG’s chairman, Ian Drummond, who hosted the judging at Indoor Garden Design and was on hand for advice. “The Peace Lily looks fresh and crisp and always adds these qualities to any display,” he added “and of course it is well-known as one of the best air-cleaners.” The two runners-up were the Crassula (also known as the Jade Plant or money tree) which took second place and the Guzmania ‘Torch’ coming in third. The judging panel included Lisa and Jim Wilkinson, as well as Matthew Appleby of Horticulture Week and Jez Abbot, freelance journalist, and Claudia de Yong of Claudia de Yong Garden Design.

Reasons to have plants in the workplace: ● We have an innate need to ‘connect’ with nature ● Plants clean the air of toxic chemicals emitted by man-made materials and us ● They help to keep us calm ● Plants help to reduce sick leave up to 60 per cent – by de-stressing us, reducing headaches and various other minor ailments ● Plants improve our concentration and our productivity by anything from 12 – 32 per cent ● We are more creative with plants around (+15 per cent) ● Plants can be used as barriers and to absorb noise ● They help to raise humidity levels so that we are more comfortable in heated or air conditioned workplaces ● They look good too See www.efig.eu.com/images/ stories/pdfs/plantsperfect.pdf for more information on the research behind these claims.

The APL is proud to announce all four of the Low Cost, High Impact gardens have won medals at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Mid Century Modern, designed by Adele Ford and Susan Wilmott and built by Outdoor Creations won Best in Category and Gold for their 1950’s inspired garden. The design featured shapes, patterns and colours from advertising of the time. It had a large central feature with hanging furniture and bold, large leaves and structural plants to compliment the bold, bright design of the garden. A Room with a View, designed by Mike Harvey and built by Arun Landscapes also won a prestigious Gold. Built on a budget on £15,000, the garden design consisted of a secluded, raised seating area with a

Surrey Gardens added another medal to their belt by winning Silver for Bugs in Boots. The garden was inspired by the work undertaken by the RHS Plants for Pollinators project and provided an ecological space for insects, birds and other wildlife. It is designed to flood in

heavy rainfall, allowing water to slowly permeate into the soil as opposed to passing water on to other attenuated systems. Silver also went to In at the Deep End designed by Monty Richardson and built by Living Gardens. Created on a budget of £7,000, the focal point of the garden was a floating patio seating area and steps surrounded by bog style borders with beautiful

SGD bulletin SGD Awards 2013 shortlist announced The Society received a record number of entries in the SGD Awards this year and after a long day scrutinising submissions, the judging panel concluded that 35 projects should be included on this year’s shortlist. Juliet Sargeant chaired the panel of judges which included landscape architects and university lecturers Bill Burford, Richard Sneesby and Trudie Entwistle and Gardens Editor at Homes & Gardens Arabella

St John-Parker. Juliet said: “This year’s short list is very exciting. It reflects the wide variety of design projects that our members undertake, from the challenge of making a great garden from a small budget in a small space, to working on large-scale commercial projects. Members of the SGD have the knowledge and experience to tackle whatever is

Chairman Chris Carr invited Wayne to give a presentation on the industry’s skills shortage at the Sustainable Landscaping Event, hosted by his company Q Lawns. Also presenting was plant hunter Tom Hart-Dyke. The packed day included a farm tour by managing director Colin Brown to see the Q Lawns turf production fields. Guests from across the industry enjoyed a great day building knowledge and networking. Following the Q Lawns event, Wayne joined Leicester-based James Coles & Sons at a splendid gala dinner to celebrate their

thrown at them and The Awards is a celebration of their creativity and commitment to excellence.” In discussing the awards scheme she explained: “Most of the work of garden designers is never seen – it is undertaken behind the walls and gates of private houses and the whole process of commissioning a garden is a bit of a closed book to most people. The SGD Awards is a unique opportunity to take a glimpse into the world of garden design; to see in action, the application of skill and knowledge of professional garden designers.” The judging panel will now undertake a series of visits to some of the shortlisted gardens to conclude which of the entries will be award winners. The result will be announced at a ceremony on 24 January 2014, tickets for which will go on sale later in the year. It is still not too late to enter the Student Award and the Designing for Community Space Award, which is the only award open to the public. Entries need to reach the SGD

centenary of growing trees and shrubs for the landscape industry. Wayne was hosted by the company’s managing director James Coles, whose great grandfather founded the company in 1913. A number of events are being held throughout the year to mark the centenary. When leaders and staff share common values and principles, this creates better team work and allows a business to achieve more, says Phil Jones

I am constantly amazed by the heightened state of motivation that our employees operate at and how this is demonstrated in their everyday lives. The following is an example of what I mean: For the past three years ISS has been working with the charity Gardening Leave, which provides horticultural therapy for ex-armed forces personnel. Gardening Leave focuses on the mental health of its veterans, using horticultural therapy to reduce social isolation, improve fine motor skills, improve memory and concentration, increase mobility, reduce anxiety and stress and promote a sense of purpose and hope for the future. Much of this work is carried out in the safe environment of walled or secluded gardens. That there is a need for this type of work to be provided by a charity suggests to me that we have, as a society, got some of our priorities round the wrong way. However that said, and as long as that requirement exists, it is a pleasure for ISS to be able to provide support for such a worthy and much needed cause. The ISS involvement came about when I offered help to the CEO of Gardening Leave and pledged support on behalf of ISS.This support comes predominantly in the way of resources, both human and material, to construct the fabric of some of the gardens in order that they are suitable environments for the veterans to work in. My idea for our involvement was always that ISS would provide backing for our staff, where they wanted to become involved, and that their contributions would not only bring benefits to our veterans, but that the exercise would heighten awareness amongst our workforce of the problems our armed forces veterans face. This, I envisaged, would create the opportunity for our people to, put frankly, help if they wanted to but not be under any pressure to work alongside our www.prolandscapermagazine.com

View from the top.indd 17

partners at Gardening Leave. The response from ISS staff to the needs of Gardening Leave has been overwhelming, with individuals also giving up their own time to help. A response I relied upon when I made our initial commitment.

An officer leading his troops instinctively knows his company are right behind him in the charge

How could I know I would get the reaction required? Well, of course I couldn’t actually know! However, what has built up over the years within our business, based on the reaction and commitment of our staff on every occasion, is the confidence I have in them to be able to make that commitment. Motivation is not a one way street. We all, as leaders, need the response from our teams that show we exist for a common cause. We could see our role purely as providing motivation ‘one way’, when in fact, every day I get huge amounts of inspiration to do my job purely from the way in which my team behaves. In the example above, the real measure of common motivation and confidence is being able to commit the business to a particular project,

be it business orientated or a great cause such as Gardening Leave, and to know that those whose responsibility it is to ‘make it work’ will share that common belief that it is a good thing to do and do it. The opposite effect would be like an officer leading his troops into battle and having to keep looking behind to check if they are following! He instinctively knows his company will be right behind him in the charge. In ISS we describe this as sharing common values and principles, upon which is based our business life. This means that beyond the common beliefs and thought mechanisms, people will ‘just do it’ because it feels right. Having the confidence to be able to rely on this instinct is one of the benefits of a great team. It provides motivation and a sense of pride in shared values, elements of our working and personal lives that are essential for success. www.gardeningleave.org

What’s in a name? Shortly after I got married my mother started to research our family tree. To my wife’s horror, and to my amusement, it transpired that we were in fact already related and not simply by marriage. The first thought that came into my head was that we could become double barrelled and style ourselves as the Forber-Wilsons. There were two distinct advantages I thought. Firstly, after years of languishing at the bottom of the register, my children would no longer be the last to be called out at school – or even worse, the first to be called out when the teacher reversed the register! Secondly, I could use the new name to win clients and influence people. For the garden design world it seems is positively awash with double barrel names – Tom Stuart Smith, Christopher Bradley-Hole, Arabella LennoxBoyd,Todd Longstaff-Gowan. Andrew ForberWilson has a certain swagger to it, don’t you think? So would the acquisition of a double barrel help as a step to success? Well, historically, there is a whiff of the aristocratic or at least the well connected that I’m sure didn’t do Anthony du Gard Pasley or Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall any harm, but as more and more people remain in long term partnerships or choose to retain their maiden names some of this lustre will surely start to dim as increasing numbers adopt the double barrel route for their children. We now apparently live in a more equal society, a meritocracy surely in which hard work, diligence and design ability deliver success. But is the garden world part of that new era or do the well connected like to keep things in the family as it were – favouring their own social circle, be it old boys, ex guards, politicians or landed gentry when it comes to selecting their designer? In our teaching at the London College we stress 18

August 2013

Andrew Wilson.indd 18

By relying on friends, or friends of friends, are we always pulling from the same small gene pool and therefore putting ourselves at a disadvantage? asks Andrew Wilson

the need to use our personal networks in order to gain work. We promote the use of social networking sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook in order to present ourselves and communicate to an expanded audience in order to broadcast our skills and capabilities, make connections or sometimes to simply remind people that we exist. Do our potential clients refer to these social networks when they think of appointing a designer?

People should feel encouraged to seek fresh blood from a wider pool

Although there is evidence that some people do exploit these networks, I would also suggest that the vast majority of clients fail to do very much homework at all on who their designer should be, relying on friends, and friends of friends. What a pity as this approach promotes a small gene pool when talented designers are out there desperate to prove their worth, show their skill and deliver a professional service. I would like to call on any prospective clients to invite at least one designer who has been researched and selected from outside their normal social network to tender or bid for work alongside their referred choices. This applies to landscape architecture as well as garden design and even stretches to Chelsea Show Garden selections in which it often seems that the same designers simply move from one sponsor to another. People should feel encouraged to experiment, seek fresh blood from a wider pool and offer patronage on the basis of talent and ability rather than who knows who. Perhaps we might nurture our talented new graduates in this way to become the sought after designers of tomorrow and eventually dispel the need to wear the right tie, shake hands in a certain way or go to the right school. So, Andrew Wilson it is and always will be – let the work do the talking. (I’d have to change my ‘Who’s Who’ entry anyway!)

Across the pond Same issues, different approach – Angus Lindsay looks at how they do things in the US

I was recently lucky enough to visit the States for a glimpse at the next generation of mowing machinery. As part of this visit I met with several landscape contractors from both the US and France and took part in a discussion forum on the factors affecting our industry. Interestingly we are all facing similar problems, but are at different stages in how we are addressing them. Maybe it’s just me, but the first thing that hits you when you visit the States is how much space there is and how much bigger everything is – the roads, the trucks, the people and even the grass! ‘Big grass’ may seem an odd statement but in the main US contractors tend to cut much higher than we do, with mulching the norm. Grass collection is a very rare operation, only used in private gardens – and even there mulching tends to take precedence. Rotary mowers are everywhere, with cylinders reserved for golf courses. Flails are used for highway mowing where there is a greater likelihood of damage from debris. Whether on highways, open spaces, gardens or roadsides, grass cutting frequencies can be up to 30 cuts per annum, with one contractor mowing grass in a retail park 45 times. Maintained to heights of 75-90mm, the grass looks fantastic with very little in the way of arisings. The high frequency of mowing means that what little arisings are generated drop into the base of the sward; the taller grass retains more moisture and is overall much healthier. Grass in general is treated very much as a plant rather than just a green covering; contractors have a considerable knowledge of different grass types in relation to their use and durability and manage them accordingly with maintenance requirements www.prolandscapermagazine.com

agreed before the first roll of turf is laid. Refreshingly, this seems to be the trend with landscaping projects in general with the maintenance programme being agreed at the inception stage before any construction takes place. This then ensures that slope angles are manageable, planting schemes are realistic, and trees, when mature, fit the environment they are planted in. Previous projects have seen significant and costly problems: for example, from the use of manufactured top soil with such high pH levels that the trees planted in it died, or gardens established in such a way that they were in permanent shade. In the States, there seems to be a lot more communication, co-operation and education between client, architect and contractor to ensure that things are done right first time and that the end product and its future needs are addressed at the beginning of a project. Whilst this all may seem a breath of fresh air, the climate in the States is of course, different to ours and so they manage their regimes accordingly. They also have considerably more space than we have so they can utilise

Grass in general is treated very much as a plant rather than just a green covering more ride-on machinery. Having said that, they do still use a significant percentage of walkbehind and stand-on rotary mowers (especially in cemeteries). However, they face similar challenges to us when recruiting staff. There are strimmer pilots and ride-on jockeys aplenty, but finding experienced supervisors and managers is a major issue as, like the UK, they struggle to attract people of management calibre into the landscape and amenity industry. In an effort to address this, several have embarked on a “grow your own” scheme to train their next crop of management, which is the same approach we take at The Landscape Group. One contractor in particular starts trainees ‘from the dirty end up’, no matter what their qualifications, so they get an appreciation of what the job entails from conception through completion and on-going maintenance.

Business Tips

Decision making Managerial decision making isn’t a big deal, until things start to go wrong. Margaret McNeil offers advice on how to spot problems, keep your cool, and how to decisively implement solutions

Decisions; your day is filled with them. Usually they are short and sweet, you know the answers, you’ve seen it before, it’s obvious. You will be good at planning and time management (that’s why you are a supervisor) so you will know what is to happen with all your teams over the next few days. Occasionally however, things don’t quite go as you expected; a vital machine breaks down, a vital delivery doesn’t arrive, a bug hits your whole team, a water main bursts and floods your prize beds. You know the scene. The best decisions tend to be those that have been thought through. The normal decision-making process involves: ● Asking yourself exactly what the problem is. ● What information do you need to solve it? ● Developing options for solving the problem. ● Choosing an option and making a plan of action. ● Carrying out the plan. ● Control and monitoring of the plan. Sometimes there’s not enough time to execute this full decision-making process, it’s easy to make a bad decision when you’re under pressure. The key is not to panic (easily said, difficult in practice). Most of the problems we encounter at work are not life-threatening (although some may be career-threatening), so it’s worthwhile taking a few extra minutes to collect your thoughts and think things through calmly. If you can see a solution clearly, implement it decisively. If replacement equipment is needed, get on the phone straight away. If people need relocating to a different site, get them moving. If you need to weigh up the situation, strike a pose of thoughtful calculation rather than that of a frantic ditherer. Look as though you are calm and collected even if you are stressed; you are in charge, 22

August 2013

Onsite training.indd 22

so therefore must take control and look in control. This behaviour rubs off on the people you are with, so your team will remain clear-headed too. If your team are coming up with suggestions, listen but don’t react immediately. They are trying to help even if what they propose isn’t quite right. Perhaps a mixture of what is being offered is what you are looking for. Think of ‘what if ’ scenarios. This means asking yourself, “what if I sent the whole team to the other site to help sort out the problem? What would be the implications? Well, work wouldn’t

get done on this site and how important is that today?” At least if you sort out this emergency, you have time to plan to deal with any problems you have created in the process. You may know the saying ‘don’t make a mountain out of a molehill’; check your reactions. If you fly into a panic when the turf is going to arrive two hours late, how are you going to cope when one of your team has an accident? This isn’t about a laissez-faire or apathetic attitude, but a realistic one. Look to the end of the week. If it’s not done today, chances are there will be time to do it tomorrow. To be an effective leader, you will need to make reactive decisions on many occasions. Where the decision is not a matter of life or death, give yourself a little breathing space, give your team direction and act with conviction. After the event, it’s time to contemplate. What could you have done better? Did you react appropriately? Is there someone you need to thank for helping you out of a sticky situation? Do you need to tell anyone what happened? As a manager or supervisor, you should always be looking to learn and improve. Watch, listen and have confidence in yourself and your team. I wish you all the best of luck.

Technical

Sustainable management of planting Janine Pattison looks at how correctly dug planting holes, fertiliser, and irrigation can lead to sustainable planting

Plants create essential bulk, colour, texture and movement in a garden with the added benefit of seasonal change and longer-term growth and development. Although usually only consuming a small amount of the initial budget (say 20 per cent in an average garden) they will consume the majority of the on-going costs of maintenance with all the pruning, watering, fertilising, mowing and of course waste creation. So the management of the planting is an essential part of making a garden or landscape more sustainable. The selection of the plants for a garden will be the subject of a future article. This month I want to take a close look at the planting process. People have been planting plants for a very long time, so it is not surprising that there are many different recommended ways. Some traditional ways work fine but modern research has developed alternate methods which involve less effort without compromising the establishment of the plant. Plants can be supplied in one of three ways: ● Field-grown bare-root stock ● Spade-dug and root balled ● Container-grown The primary objective of planting is to place plant roots in contact with the soil in which they will be growing. This seems obvious and quite simple but failure to achieve good root-to-soil www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Janine Pattison.indd 25

contact is one of the most common reasons for planting failure. The planting hole The latest thinking around planting holes is that they should be wider than they are deep. Ideally two to three times the width of the rootball. The outer edges of the hole should be tapered down to create a bowl-like depression. This is because the majority of root growth develops laterally from the ends of the roots and very few roots initially grow downwards. Planting holes should be no deeper than the rootball. Container-grown plants are often root bound with the roots tangled and tightly wrapped inside the pot. These roots need to be opened up to encourage them to come into contact with the soil and absorb moisture. How many times have you lifted a plant that refuses to grow only to find that it is sitting in a solid-sided hole with the roots unable to penetrate the soil? Once the plant is in the hole, firmly pack the soil around the plant but do not compact. The objective is to hold the plant securely in place without damaging the soil structure so that air and water can still move down to the roots. A thick layer of organic mulch (5 to 10cm) applied after planting has been shown to have many positive advantages. The mulch should be well composted and kept away from the base of the plant.

Adding fertiliser to new planting is often unnecessary if the plants have been selected to suit the site, the soil has been prepared correctly, the plants installed well, and post-planting care has been good. Excess application of fertiliser can cause problems of weak, sappy growth that is easily attacked by pests and diseases. Maintaining soil health by regular applications of compost or mulch and avoiding compaction will be more sustainable in the long term. The irrigation of new planting will be critical to its successful establishment; bare-root and rootballed plants will have suffered significant root loss during the transplanting process and container-grown stock is at great risk of drought stress as it struggles to make the transition to open ground. Well established plants will require less water in the future and be more sustainable. The best planting techniques aim to ensure long-term survival of the plants and eliminate problems caused by damaged or distorted root systems. As the old saying goes: “Spend sixpence on the plant but a shilling on the hole”.

Water features It seems the fashion for stand-alone water features, used as focal points within gardens, remains undiminished and including one in every garden is still the norm. We know that water has always been used to good effect in gardens of all shapes and sizes. A good water feature acts like a magnet or a fireplace in a room, drawing people to it by: ● creating a sense of tranquillity, coolness and calm in a garden ● presenting an opportunity to affect the senses in different ways; ● on a practical level, masking undesirable noises such as traffic. Over the last 20 years, tastes have evolved; where previously the choice was limited to traditional stone wall-fountains and lead urns, the options are now seemingly limitless. Materials like stone, bronze, copper, stainless steel, resin and concrete can be used to fulfil your client’s wishes whether that’s a bubbling pebble fountain, an overflowing urn, a drilled monolith, a copper or bronze centrepiece or a stainless steel water cascade. The reality is that it doesn’t really matter what the water feature looks like “on the top” because, from a contractor’s point of view, the beauty is that largely speaking, they are all the same beneath the skin. So, once you’ve built one, you have a successful blueprint to build more and more, scaling up or down as necessary. So what do you need to consider?

Installation advice from Simon Sales of Landscapeplus

Reservoir The simplest way to contain the water is in a buried reservoir covered with a steel grid. Firstly, make sure your reservoir is large enough, because water is lost through evaporation and you don’t want to be topping it up too often. Secondly buy a proper reservoir with a galvanised grid and maintenance access so that you can be sure it will be strong enough to hold whatever you choose to put on top, it won’t rust away and you’ll always be able to access the pump for maintenance purposes. Pump You will be pumping water vertically upwards and in some cases, like large water cascades, you’ll be pumping a lot more water than you might imagine. So, for that reason, it is important to select the correct pump (with a flow regulator) for the effect you’re intending to create and then ensure you have the right sized pipework and fittings to transport the water. If in doubt, ask your supplier. Filtration Your customer won’t thank you if they see green water spouting from their lovely water feature so for crystal clear water, use a pressurised “plug and play” filter with an ultra-violet lamp. Power You’ll need power to operate your pump and filter, so don’t forget to run an armoured cable to a point nearby and make sure you have it connected by a qualified electrician.

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Landscapeplus.indd 27

Switching Like garden lighting, you have a number of options for switching your water feature on and off. The simplest method is to use a remote control handset or more commonly now, to use the Light Symphony iPhone app. Remote control switching eliminates the disruption and cost associated with “chasing” cables back into your clients house. If you have a separate filtration system, then use a 24-hour timer for the filter. Lighting If you’ve gone to the trouble of choosing and installing a water feature then make sure you illuminate it so that your client can enjoy it throughout those long summer evenings and if you intend to submerse the light fittings to light the water feature then ensure the fitting has an IP68 rating.

So in conclusion, by building a water feature you give your clients what they want, you add value and further develop your relationship with that client and best of all, you grow your business – so what’s stopping you? LET’S HEAR IT FROM...

Dan Flynn, founder of gardenlink based in the south of England tells Pro Landscaper about his career in landscaping and how his company differs from others in the industry How did you get into landscaping and was it something you always wanted to do?

I got into it firstly through my father who was a keen gardener and I had always liked being outside. We had a relative who had a landscape business in Jersey, and although I had wanted to go abroad I couldn’t speak any other languages, so I went over to Jersey to work. I later realised that you had to get some qualifications to do things properly so I came back to go to Merrist

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Let's hear it from new.indd 29

Wood College and did the NCH with the view that I would go back to Jersey afterwards and carry on. I finished the course with a distinction in 1986, but during my year out I had started a landscaping business which had become busy and within six months I had four people working for me. Why did you choose Merrist Wood?

At that time it was very well known and was probably the best college for landscaping. What was the business you set up?

It was a landscape construction business based around Reigate which I ran for four years. I met my wife to be, Maxine, and we went

Dan Flynn

travelling for a year and when we came back I started working for Clifton Nurseries as a basic landscaper (2001) and within two weeks I was promoted to foreman. Three years later I was made contracts manager where I became responsible for around 25 staff. When I left after six years they were turning over £5.5million on the landscape and maintenance side, so they really did get the best jobs then. Unfortunately some key people left, but now Matthew Wilson is building it back up again. I had interviews with various other construction companies and was offered jobs with each but thought about a concept for gardenlink – an idea that hadn’t been done by any other businesses in the market.

Let’s Hear it From...

1

2

So what is that concept?

What is your staff structure?

It’s really that we don’t take on any private work ourselves, so all our contracts come through a designer who is contracted by the client, but we come under the designer’s wing so we don’t really market ourselves to clients direct. From day one this is how we have worked and our first project came from Andy Sturgeon after I pitched him the idea of our company. He had a project in mind for us, which we took on and received a deposit – so this is what started the business and launched the company. We never borrowed from the bank as we were up and running from the beginning. Our feeling was that if clients were paying a fee to a designer they were serious about having their garden done. The designer will have given them a realistic idea of the price, which helps – we’ve worked with around 330 designers and architects over our 12 years all over the country from Anglesey to Dartmouth and internationally to Guernsey and the south of France.

We have four construction teams of two to three people, a soft landscape team who do all the preparation and receive and handle the plants, and also two maintenance teams.

Were all these projects with UK designers?

Yes, mainly.

30

August 2013

Let's hear it from new.indd 30

and look after it going forward. This makes it easier for them to recommend us as opposed to a construction only company who can’t offer an on-going service. What do you do when a client comes to you direct instead of through a designer?

This does happen four or five times a month and in this instance I will recommend a designer. I visit the client first to find out what they want and what their budget is. I can then choose someone who would suit their particular needs.

3

So you do maintenance as well?

Yes, but we only maintain the jobs we have constructed. We found that building gardens and providing a quality service deserved a good level of on-going maintenance. This allows us to provide the best service for the client, with the designer being safe in the knowledge that we can start the job at the site survey stage, then build the garden

So you haven’t thought about having your own in-house designer?

No, I think it could cause a conflict of interest as independent designers would be less keen to work with us. This is how we have worked from day one, sometimes it’s been really difficult to do it this way but I feel it’s the right thing to do. Is there a typical project price you wouldn’t go below?

No, I like to feel I always give value for money

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

16/07/2013 14:20

Let’s Hear it From... for everything we do, so if I said to a designer I wouldn’t work below a certain price I think there’s something wrong with that. If you price sensibly and keep control of your staff, you should be able to make a project profitable, even if it’s as simple as just planting a window box. Most of the projects we win now are done with a little cost engineering requested by the client or designer – it is possible to find ways to build a garden at a sensible price, sometimes with a little re-thought into how things are done. Where do you stand on the plant debate?

I feel the designer should pick their plants and tag their trees, and put their own mark-up on the prices with the client having full knowledge of this – or they get paid for sourcing the plants for the client. We charge for receiving and carrying them to the location and planting them. Presumably your dedicated soft landscape team are well trained in handling plants and trees which avoids any problems?

Yes, for example, the biggest tree we have planted was an oak tree 30 metres tall and 7.5 tonnes which was the largest the German tree grower had ever exported to the UK and had to be

craned into place. So this is really reflective of our company – we will work on projects as small as window boxes to big, long term projects lasting up to three and a half years.

If you price sensibly and keep control of your staff, you should be able to make a project profitable How does your order book look going forward?

We’re pretty busy until the end of the year. We’ve been asked to look at three Chelsea gardens for next year but much as I love it I’ve decided to take a year out from Chelsea. It’s a hard slog and always comes at the busiest time of year and the business tends to get put on hold. Do you do Chelsea gardens to make money or for the love of it?

I do really love Chelsea but it has to be

commercially viable – some landscapers are sold the idea that they will get lots of work from it but the jobs we have got from Chelsea are very infrequent. We use all our own staff to build the gardens, although last year we needed extra help because the designer lost her sponsor so we put an advert out through Andersplus for volunteers; they had over 70 offers of help which was fantastic! When did you do your first Chelsea garden?

The first one for gardenlink was in 2009 and was for designers Angus Thompson and Jane Brockbank. Prior to that I had built five main avenue gardens for Clifton Nurseries. Are you still quite hands on?

No, but that’s probably why I like Chelsea so much because you do get back on the tools and drive the forklifts etc. That’s the only time I get involved in the construction now though. 1 Future gardens. 2 Essex Villas. 3 Private garden in Guernsey. 4 Private garden in Kensington, London. © Charlotte Rowe Garden Design/Light IQ

Let’s Hear it From...

We will go out of our way to recycle and use sustainable products where possible Do you get pressure from designers about sustainability?

It’s always there, and we will go out of our way to find ways to recycle and use sustainable products where possible. If there are excavations on site we try to leave them there in some other way. One of my big aims at Chelsea is that the gardens are re-used somewhere else which has happened with most of our gardens. The Cloudy Bay garden we built for Andrew and Gavin at the Wilson McWilliam Studio this year has been picked up by Cityscapes. The garden will move through four different public parks around London over the summer, a designer at each will use the leftover products from the garden, which will then be disassembled and moved to the next park. At the end of all this Andrew and Gavin get the products back for installation at Horticultural Halls – there is a risk however, because they could be left with a pile of rubble and dead plants!

1

so I have been involved in some fantastic projects over the years. One person I haven’t worked with yet is Christopher Bradley-Hole – I had a good chat with him at Chelsea; Tom Stuart-Smith is another. I do like working with newly-qualified designers too, who I tend to meet through my lecturing at The English Gardening School and the Regent’s Park College. These designers tend to learn from us and use our skills and expertise to develop their knowledge.

How do you source new products?

Designers probably do most of that but we always keep an eye out for things in trade magazines like this one and take ideas from other projects and pass them onto designers – trade shows are also a good way of finding new products. We recently saw some powder coated aluminium case Versailles boxes at Chelsea which we’d never seen before and knew that Hugo Bugg was looking for something similar for a current project we’re working on with him in London, so we sent him the link and they are now in his design. Are there any designers you haven’t yet worked with that you would really like to?

I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the country’s best and most experienced designers 32

August 2013

Let's hear it from new.indd 32

And is lecturing something you’d like to get more involved in?

2

Yes, when time allows – I have three full time jobs at the moment but I really do enjoy the lecturing which I currently do two or three times a year and sit on a couple of advisory panels – it’s great to give a bit of wisdom to the new people coming through and get feedback from them. Who do you admire in terms of landscape construction?

There are some great people in the industry but one person whose work I have always admired is Brian Herbert of Outdoor Options.

Are you involved in any of the industry associations?

Not currently, I respect the associations but getting involved properly is a big undertaking and everything else has to be put on hold, which can mean losing sight of your own business. I was a member of APL but didn’t have the time to commit myself to help very much. If things were quieter with my workload I would re-join APL and help in its aim to guide the association forward. What do you do outside of work?

Maxine and I work together (she deals with HR, communications and business admin), so it’s important we take time out. We have two children of 9 and 11 who keep us busy and we enjoy many outdoor activities with them. Sport wise, I love mountain biking and I am currently in the process of opening a bicycle shop/café in Reigate with two other people which is keeping me extremely busy at the moment!

THOROUGHLY MODERN MERSEYSIDE Poppyhead Consultancy A modern, minimalist front and rear garden for visual impact, entertaining and relaxation, designed to effectively connect the outdoor space with the inside of the property. Strong clean lines, emphasis of light and shadow, and bold architectural planting are signatures of the scheme

he scheme was a private commission for a commercial developer of highend housing. The house and landscape are situated on a private road on the boundary of the Rainhill conservation area in Merseyside in the North West of England, and the landscape project included front and rear gardens of this private residence. The house is a minimalist modern design and Poppyhead Consultancy were brought in when planning permission for the property had been submitted to produce a modern landscape that

linked effectively with the house and connected the inside and outside spaces. The total plot size is approximately 18m x 37m, with front garden 18m x 7m and the rear garden 18m x 18m. Access to the rear garden is via a narrow entranceway along one side of the property. The timeline of design and construction of the external landscape was somewhat driven by the constraints of the house build and hence was longer than would usually be the case. Planning approval for the property with conditions was received April 2011 and

Poppyhead was formally commissioned in May 2011. The front garden was of immediate interest to the planners and this was designed and submitted to planning in June 2011 to discharge the condition. Rear landscape design

Key architectural plants Planting in both the front and rear gardens consisted of a strong architectural pallet with limited flowering perennials in line with client preferences. These included: ● Acanthus spinosa ● Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ ● Bergenia cordifolia ‘Purpurea’ ● Betula pendula ● Buxus sempervirens (clipped into balls) ● Calamagrostis brachytricha ● Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foester’ ● Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ ● Eucalyptus niphophila ● Fatsia japonica ● Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ ● Hakonechloa macra ● Helleborus foetidus ‘Wester Flisk’ group ● Heucera micrantha ‘Palace Purple’ ● Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ ● Phormium ‘Alison Blackman’ ● Phyllostachys nigra ● Pinus Mugo ‘Mops’ ● Polystichum setiferum ● Rhus typhinus ● Climbers/wall shrubs included: ● Ceanothus ‘Concha’ ● Hydrangea petiolaris ● Parthenocissus henryana ● Passiflora caerulea

was completed November 2011. The build of the property started during the summer of 2011 but due to various holdups related to supply of materials and weather, the landscape works could not commence until later in the year. The build of the front and rear gardens and full planting were completed May 2012. CONSIDERATIONS The client was a construction contractor and a high-end house-build developer. The house was being built for him and his wife in the first instance and they very much wanted a contemporary garden that was modern, minimal and architectural to integrate and connect with their modern property. They had a preference for a mix of formal and informal styles but with a focus on creating a spacious, clean feel in the garden with year-round interest. They intended to use the rear garden as an outside eating place, for relaxation and sitting whilst the front needed to provide access for cars and parking for one on the drive and one in the garage. The existing fencing was to be retained. The rear garden needed to accommodate a reasonably sized lawn area, and a contained patio, together with areas of architectural planting. The front and rear gardens needed to be lit so that they could be enjoyed from the extensive glass windows and doors of the property. The front garden was bordered at the front by a sandstone wall that is a distinctive feature within the conservation area; two unhealthy trees: a 1 Fagus that had been too close to the previous house on the site and a diseased laburnum were also present. The rear garden had no distinctive landscape features except a Betula tree approximately 20m tall, which was to be retained. A simple hard landscaping palette was also requested and the front areas needed to accommodate some previously bought granite and sandstone materials whilst the rear needed to fit with the inside limestone of the garden room that led out into the garden. Infill gravels were also a client preference. The clients

expressed a preference for formal planting such as Buxus and architectural planting to include grasses, ferns, bamboos, etc. There was a preference for keeping a simple colour scheme including purple, green and white as opposed to a riot of colour. The front is south facing but the numerous neighbouring trees make this area relatively shady in the summer months. The rear garden is shady nearer the house but further away from the house the garden is sunny with the right hand side (the garden room side) being sunniest in the afternoon and evening. The front is all on one level but the rear drops down a total of one metre in two tiers. DESIGN SOLUTIONS AND PLANTING The completed design incorporates several key elements and both front and rear gardens were driven by inspiration boards created with the client, illustrating the thinking and proposed feel of the areas. The front garden was designed to work with the woodland feel, with shadows and light to create a contemporary interpretation of a woodland scene. Although the design was strongly associated with the house with clean lines and hard materials, the natural hues of the tumbled sandstone, pale granite, wooden edging, and bark chippings softened the look and blended with the surroundings; this was further enhanced with textural and architectural planting.

Portfolio The rear garden took this modern minimal approach strongly connected to the house a stage further, and substantial rendered planters were used to create a large sunken courtyard for outside dining and to manage the levels. Pale limestone acted to bring light into the area whilst the white render of the planters linked strongly to the house and provided bold, clean geometry. Steps down to a generous lawn area with a limestone and slate pathway taking the eye to a focal point of a multi-stemmed Eucalyptus tree completed the layout. This is a garden that also has potential for further additions including sculpture and overhead beams from the house.

and rear of the property, and connected with the house interior, a light limestone slab and blue slate chippings were sourced from local suppliers. The connection of house and garden was further reinforced using white rendered planters using the same system as the house render: Wetherby 1.5mm white ‘K’ render system. In order to ensure that clean crisp edges were created between hard and soft scape and between different soft landscaping areas, a metal edging system was used. The narrow access to the rear of the garden meant that a mini Bobcat was the only machinery used with all other processes being completed by hand.

SOURCING MATERIALS The client already had a quantity of granite paving, sandstone block paving, and granite kerbs, these were used at the front of the property with virtually no wastage. These worked incredibly well with the existing sandstone front wall which was pressure-washed to lighten and clean the stone. For the rest of the hard landscaping to the side

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS TO OVERCOME The landscape was considered part of the overall development, therefore conditions provided with the planning approval meant that Poppyhead needed to liaise directly with the planners to discharge landscape-related conditions and obtain approval for front and rear garden designs prior to commencement of construction works on site. inappropriate – were to be retained. The sandstone wall at the front of the property was particularly valuable in the context of the conservation area and therefore, any changes including rebuilding of the wall would have necessitated a costly and time-consuming approach. The central entranceway of the driveway was therefore incorporated into the scheme through a 45 degree layout, this accommodated the central entrance within the wall, enabled garage access, and ensured efficient use of most of the materials already available from another job, limiting wastage. When onsite, there was a need to obtain a few additional square metres of the sandstone modules but these could be readily obtained and mixed within the existing materials so that they were not noticeable in the finished scheme. The only issues to contend with within the rear garden were to hide the bins (which are adequately hidden in the area at the side of the house), and manage the levels effectively. The front garden and side pathway were all 0.5m higher than the level of the garden room and a further drop of 0.5m existed between the garden room and the end of the garden. This was easily turned to our advantage, creating a sunken patio area leading from the house and surrounded by raised planters whilst ensuring added privacy from neighbours. Generous steps down to the lawn area from the patio ensure a feeling of space and separation.

iverhill House was bought in 1840 by John Rogers, a scholar, scientist, botanist, Fellow of the Royal Society, friend of Charles Darwin, and one of the first members of the Royal Horticultural Society. He was a patron of plant hunters and sponsored expeditions to find rare and exotic seeds which he hoped to cultivate at Riverhill

– a perfect place to introduce new plants due to its sheltered situation and lime free hillside. These plant hunters went to the Himalayas to bring back plants which can still be seen at Riverhill today. The estate is managed by Edward (great, great, great grandson of John Rogers) and his wife Sarah. Four generations of the Rogers family live at Riverhill. In 2011, May & Watts Garden Design was commissioned to design a contemporary scheme for the Walled Garden. The sloping, south facing walled garden is situated in the ‘foothills’ of the property, this genius loci provides the initial inspiration for the design, linking this area with the wider garden. Terraces have been used in the Himalayan foothills for crop production for centuries, and it was these landforms that inspired the new terraces of the Walled Garden, as well as www.prolandscapermagazine.com

referencing its historic crop production. The curvilinear contours of the landform terraces are pleasingly organic in nature, making an asset of a potentially difficult sloping site, both in function and form. A circular pool containing an island reached by a turf bridge reflects the curves of the terraces. The pool contains eight fountains – a colonnade of movement and sound, creating an island room. A circular standing of trees (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii – Himalayan Birch) is sited over three terraces. Four elliptical island beds rise up from the www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Portfolio terraces forming a cascade of flowers; the clean whites of Sidalcea candida, the pale rosy hue of Stokesia laevis ‘Träumeri’, the icy blues tones of Iris ‘Blue Shimmer’, and sparkling lemon flashes of Leucanthemum x superbum ‘Sonnnenschein’ of these pale beds create a vision of tumbling water catching the sunrays. The top terrace references the more traditional aspects of the walled garden. A small orchard of apple trees (an important crop in Kent and the Himalayas) encircles a path that leads to a cloistered hut embowered with roses and vines that offers some welcome shade and stunning vistas across the garden and beyond. A path from the hut leads to a small formal vegetable garden edged with box, which follows the contour of the terrace, making use of all available space. At the bottom of the garden there is a long hydrangea walk under-planted with peonies which provide flowering interest from midsummer onwards.

PERFECT SQUARE Gaynor Witchard Garden Design A place to entertain and hold parties was the brief for this small city garden

G

aynor Witchard Garden Design was commissioned to design the rear garden of a modern house in the city of Cardiff in July 2012. Construction started in November 2012 while the house was undergoing extensive re-modelling, and the client felt it would make sense to get all the work completed at the same time. The client is a director of an independent wood import and distribution company, which meant travelling all over the world for extensive periods. The area was a very small courtyard and almost square (8m x 10m) – so the garden design really had to work hard to create a feeling of space. It is south east facing, but overshadowed by a huge ash tree outside the boundary which the council would not remove, which meant that much of the garden was in shade for most of the day. The garden budget? There wasn't one – “just get what you want”, was the reply, “but NO FLOWERS!”

The intention of the design was to give a more spacious feel to this enclosed space

Client Brief Modern, very low maintenance planting, somewhere to entertain friends, hold parties and an area to enjoy the sunny part of the day. That was it. Everything else was left to me to decide, including style, plant choices and paving selection. The new kitchen, which spanned the width of the house, was to have bi-fold doors leading straight out into the garden, so paving to complement the interior was important. The house would be very modern in style, with porcelain floors, state of the art lighting, high end furniture and appliances with many features operated remotely. The garden needed to reflect these features and become an 'outside room', incorporating the same high specification as the house refurbishment. Lighting was to be an important element, as the client often held parties and dinners for friends or business associates. People often congregate in the kitchen, so using light to create a

night time view was desirable. Although in good condition, the existing fence panels were standard larch lap which would not suit the new contemporary style, and a solution was needed to bring them up to date. It wasn't possible to remove the panels in favour of the client's taste, or to negotiate with the neighbours either side of the property. Planting preference was for very low maintenance, no colour or flowers but year round interest. Design Solution The intention of the design was to give a more spacious feel to this enclosed space, and raise the daylight levels. Creating interest for what would otherwise be just a large paved patio was added by rendered raised beds, and by breaking it up into separate areas with contrasting paving and ground level planting. A horizontal slatted screen was an effective and striking way to cover up the fence panels and complement the modern features of the garden. The wood was chosen by the client – iroko hardwood – he also arranged to have the slats cut to the correct size. A water feature was something the client hadn't considered, so when I included a water wall incorporated into the raised planters as a focal point, he was delighted.

ABOUT GAYNOR WITCHARD GARDEN DESIGN Launched initially in 2006, Gaynor designed four show gardens at the RHS show in Cardiff, earning a Silver and three Silver-gilt medals with two Best Show Garden awards. Commissions have steadily increased since leaving the BBC after 27 years service in 2010 to concentrate full time on the design business.

Construction I work with a local team, Alfresco Landscape and Garden. They are my preferred landscapers as the owner, Paul Melvin, understands the way I think and I trust his ability to interpret and finish my projects to a very high standard. He is a Brett approved installer, and takes the responsibility for ordering materials. On arrival at the site, it had already been cleared and a sub base ready for the installation of the paving, however, there was a problem. The sub base consisted of scalpings only, it was not compacted and it had been laid right up to the level of the patio doors. This resulted in most of it being removed, a layer of stone dust compacted and a full bed of mortar laid. On removing the scalpings, we also found a large drain pipe perilously close to the surface. This was partly removed, and a very slim line drain installed for practical and aesthetic reasons.

Sourcing Materials The paving chosen was from Brett's Moderno range in grey and black. The clean sharp lines of the single size only (400mm x 400mm) paving was preferable to a random design, which would also echo the style in the kitchen floor. Silver gravel was used as mulch on the raised beds to help suppress weeds and retain moisture, and also to aid drainage at ground level. Garden lighting is appearing on more and more people's wish lists and for this particular project I needed a company with a good reputation and an eye for lighting design. I contacted Inspirational Lighting and Electrical supplies, who are located in Cardiff Bay. They worked alongside the landscapers, and were even commissioned to light the whole house as well! They advised lighting sources that were all LED including downlights, LED tape and IP65 high output LED spike lights for the garden. The

5 It's so important to get the level right as any unevenness will show up and spoil the effect.

whole project was controlled by Rako wireless lighting controls, which also controlled the water feature. Finally, I selected plants from my favourite supplier, Pugh's Garden Centre in Radyr, Cardiff. I prefer to actually see the plants and I personally oversee selection. I use the garden centre as they only sell quality plants and if I'm not happy with the performance of a following installation, they are happy to provide a backup service to resolve any problems. Plants were chosen for their structure, form and evergreen qualities – Fatsia japonica, Phyllostachys nigra, selection of ferns, Heuchera 'Patty's Plum', topiary Photinia fraserii 'Red Robin', Livistona chinensis and a mature Olea Europa in keeping with the Mediterranean feel of the garden. The list wasn't exhaustive at this point because many plants weren't available in November/December. A re-visit will be necessary when the client is ready.

Plantsman’s Plot

Plantsman’s PLOT A round-up of trees and plants available at some of the country’s best nurseries To appear in Plantsman’s Plot, please send your plant of the month, details and image to editor@pro-landscaper.co.uk Even if our summers are often very ‘British’ we can invoke the feeling of the Mediterranean by growing palms such as Chamaerops humilis, the Fan Palm. One of the toughest readily-available palms, Chamaerops humilis is a bushy evergreen palm, often multistemmed with large fan-shaped leaves. Thriving in sun or shade and preferring good drainage, they make excellent architectural container plants. As they are slow growing and require minimal maintenance they also free up just a bit of time for hopefully relaxing in the garden over the summer! www.theplantationnursery.co.uk

A stunning, vibrant display of electric violet flowers form on this evergreen Hebe ‘Champion’ from the end of spring all the way into the early days of summer. This is in fact a very new variety from the depths of Wales. Its habit is quite spherical and relatively compact, which makes it a very easy plant to grow and maintain. It prefers a well-drained soil type and can grow well in both the shade and the sun. It can grow and spread to 45cm x 45cm. Although hardy, it’s best to protect from cold winds in winter and trim back after flowering. www.nicholsons.gb.com 52

Native to Mexico and only recently discovered for cultivation, Mathiasella bupleuroides ‘Green Dream’ is an attractive hardy perennial for a super sunny spot. Green, almost bell-shaped flowers are produced on umbels reaching a height of 60-100cm. The green flowers are produced from spring to late summer and take on an attractive pink tinge as they age, reaching far into the autumn months. The leaves and structure of Mathiasella bupleuroides ‘Green Dream’ is similar in shape to Angelica gigas. Hailing from Mexico this plant requires a hot, sunny site in well-drained soil. If you want a plant that is elegant in stature and subtle to boot – this is the plant for you. www.provendernurseries.co.uk

As the last of the summer blossom fades, Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’ steps into the breach with its rich burgundy foliage. The heart shaped leaves and petite, spreading habit give this pretty tree an endearing and graceful quality. Although perhaps a little temperamental to establish, Forest Pansy is worth the effort for its multi-season interest. In spring it offers a sophisticated deep magenta blossom, appearing on bare, dark stems; in autumn the foliage warms to a golden yellow. www.majestictrees.co.uk www.prolandscapermagazine.com

“Native or non-native, which one’s best?” Soft Landscape Workshop - 25 September 2013 Some may say that planners and ecologists have taken control of the choice of plants we use in our planting schemes. Palmstead’s 2013 soft landscape workshop for landscape and garden professionals aims to address this perception and leave you better equipped to negotiate with BREEAM points. Throughout the day our key speakers will discuss and encourage lively debate on the use of native and non-native plants to satisfy planning and environmental requirements. Tony Kirkham from Kew is an expert on trees, Prof. Nigel Dunnett is a green roof and meadow expert and Prof. Chris Baines is a long time promoter of wildlife in gardens and listed as one of the top 40 most influential people in his field. Plus further speakers to be announced and our showcase exhibition; all taking place at Ashford International Hotel, Simone Weil Avenue, Ashford, Kent, TN24 8UX. Blighted no longer! If your box has been suffering then we have the answer. Big bushy balls of Ilex crenata, almost identical to Buxus sempervirens but impervious to box blight, a fungal disease that can wreak havoc and be hard to eradicate. Prunus serrula Tibetica can be grown as a single stem standard tree or a multi stemmed specimen; either way it takes a lot to beat its magnificent shiny mahogany coloured bark. Introduced into the UK in the early 1900s, this fine cherry thrives on most free-draining soils and is ideal for gardens as well as municipal areas for year round interest. We grow the standard version up to 20-25cm girth and the multi stemmed version beyond three metres. Fagus sylvatica Dawyck is our Production Director’s favourite tree, and for good reason. Available in green, gold and purple, all three varieties produce beautiful medium sized (15-20m) mature trees with a very columnar form. Fagus sylvatica Dawyck Purple is probably the pick of the bunch, with glorious red foliage which turns deep purple in summer. The tree will thrive in nearly all fertile, well drained soils. Its narrow form, which rarely exceeds more than 3m width, makes it a great alternative to the more commonly planted fastigiate oaks and hornbeam. www.deepdale-trees.co.uk www.prolandscapermagazine.com

it as Intermediate H3-H4, I’ve had them growing for many years and they have been unperturbed by the recent cold winters. However a handful of grit under each plant will help because they don’t like wet winters. They can add an exotic flavour to your plantings. The purple form “Sparkling Burgundy” is spectacular: but in my experience is not hardy so needs a very sheltered spot. www.palmstead.co.uk

African lilies are garden royalty – producing large, globe-shaped flowerheads atop stiffly upright stems that arise from dense tufts of strappy foliage. Agapanthus ‘Dokter Brouwer’ is a particularly good form, bearing dense, 18cm wide spheres of violet-blue trumpets, with darker mid-ribs – giving a two-tone effect when viewed at close quarters. Their seedheads are also very attractive when covered with hoar frost, so worth leaving on the plant until spring. Hailing from southern Africa, they enjoy a hot, sunny border with moisture-retentive, but well-drained soil. However, on light, sandy soils that dry out in summer, flowering will be curtailed. They also flower better if their roots are congested, so they make excellent permanent container plants. www.hortusloci.co.uk August 2013 55

Growing Trees

Selling your clients on

semi-mature trees Stop apologising and have confidence in your landscape plan and trees, says Steve McCurdy at Majestic Trees. You are selling an investment which is well worth the money Times are tough and many of us are watching every penny simply trying to make ends meet. After five years of doom and gloom we are getting used to hearing landscapers tell us that they need to reduce the budget for the landscape design that they would be building. Undoubtedly the economic downturn has made people more cautious in their spending, but for most of our clients this translates to a determination to get the very best price for the things they desire. In short, it has become fashionable to negotiate! However, as proven by record sales of luxury brands, there are customers out there who don’t blink an eyelid at spending £2,000 for another handbag or £150,000 for a car, yet we so often think that they couldn’t be persuaded to spend some serious money on their landscaping. Even the squeezed middle class, who you may say is more like your average customer, wouldn’t think it a big deal to spend £150 for a fine dining experience for two or £65,000 on a car. Yet we go around constantly apologising at what we need to

charge to the point that they know that they can squeeze you even further. Personally, I think we simply need to act and talk more professionally and with confidence, what we do will beautify their property and is an investment. So, how do you present your landscape plan that features semi-mature trees – a design that meets their design aspirations but not perhaps their budgetary ones? You are at a crossroads because you need to convince them of the merits of your decision. From my experience, there is no better way to inspire a client than to take them along to a tree nursery where they can literally stand in awe at the possibilities. Rather than using your tree books of close-ups or snaps of the tree you’ve selected, why not have them literally stand before your chosen specimens, appreciate their scale and beauty and visualise what they will look like once they are planted in their garden. After all a tree is an investment, appreciating in value when correctly selected as the years go by. I have witnessed the fact that once your client experiences a high quality tree nursery with mature trees, they will think they are a bargain and no

more apologies are needed! Majestic Trees is designed to serve you and your customer in this way. Tour the few quality container tree growers and decide which will deliver each and every time, making you and your garden look good. Consider the liability and where the tree nursery stands on warranty. If the tree struggles or fails who will have to pay for the labour and equipment to make any necessary change. If you buy an AirPot grown tree it is very unlikely that it will fail, but it is important to understand where the liability falls. Be bold and communicate to your client your confidence in the design, that you are a professional, and the value of a quality build, explain that you will deliver a fantastic project and semi-mature trees are a bargain compared to many other things they can buy. They will respect you if you confidently but humbly explain and show them the difference in why they need a trained and experienced landscaper, one that charges professional fees, and they will accept it because they want the best!

Centenary Celebrations Centrally located in the East Midlands, Coles Nurseries supply trees, shrubs, and plants both field-grown and in containers, to the landscaping and amenity markets across the UK. The company currently has over 110 staff and 195 hectares of production facilities, and delivers across the UK in its own fleet of vehicles. Plants are selected from own-grown stock and the majority of their container-grown plants are propagated in-house. In July, Coles Nurseries hosted their Centenary Banquet at Beedles Lake Golf Centre at East Goscote. The venue overlooks a beautiful tree lined lake and on arrival guests enjoyed welcome drinks and canapés on the patio by the side of the lake. After a four course dinner, there were two special guest speakers; Dr Stephen Duckworth OBE, who gave a stirring speech on managing change, relating to Coles’ 100 year history and the current pressures on the industry. The second speaker, Mr Roy Lancaster OBE, best known for his work on the long running BBC TV programme, Gardeners' World and BBC Radio show Gardeners' Question Time and formerly the first Curator of the Hillier Arboretum (now the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens) gave a fascinating talk, focusing on 10 different plants representing each of the 10 decades of Coles Nurseries, and the stories behind their discovery. James Coles closed the evening, giving a talk enjoyed by all and finishing with the raffle draw for a Lions Rugby Shirt, signed by Captain Finlay Calder and Dean Richards, both a part of the 1989 squad, donated by HSBC. All in all, the evening raised over £650 for Perennial (the Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Society), bringing the www.prolandscapermagazine.com

total raised by Coles this year to over £1,200. Managing Director James Coles said, “We would like to thank all our staff, speakers and guests for making the evening as enjoyable as it was, here’s to the next hundred years!” The centenary celebrations will continue with an invitation only open day at their largest growing site, Gaddesby, in September. The open day will feature talks, seminars and tours of the nursery. It’s never too late to train Whether you’re looking to re-train in a new career in design and landscaping, or even add to your current skills – there are a range of options you can choose from

KLC School of Design KLC School of Design offers a part time Diploma Garden Design and a range of short courses at studios in Hampton Court Palace with the practical elements taking place in the 20th Century Garden. The Diploma begins each January giving students the opportunity for work experience over the summer. The Diploma is highly respected within the industry and provides the necessary training to practice as a professional and KLC is also highly involved and proactive in helping students find work on graduation. The Introduction to Garden Design is a short course that can be studied over one week or part-time one day a week for ten weeks. For the autumn term the week-long introduction runs from 2-6 September and the part-time introduction begins on Friday 20 September. There are also two open learning courses for garden design – a Diploma in Garden Design and Designing with Plants. Pickard School of Garden Design If you are a contractor looking to add another string to your bow, or if you just feel it’s time for a career change, join Pickard School of Garden Design this October on our one-year, part-time diploma in garden design. Led by leading, award winning garden designer Rob Whitehead MSGD, we offer small class sizes, plenty of one-to-one feedback, and a friendly, supportive environment in which to develop your skills. We receive excellent feedback from our students, the majority of whom join us by recommendation; we have been teaching garden design for 25 years. We also offer bespoke, one-to-one training, and CAD and CPD training. “Whatever talent you have as a garden designer, no matter how hidden, Rob will find and develop.” Contact Tel: 020 8783 9658 Email: admin@pickardschool.com Web: www.pickardschool.com

The Landscape Training Group The Landscape Training Group (LTG) membership comprises mostly of contractors and employers. Recent feedback shows that many college leavers look for employment having been trained in various skills, but without having the specific qualification, e.g. in pesticide application or tractor driving. This is often because the individual has to pay for the assessments themselves, but cannot afford to.This presents an immediate cost to the employer or puts the college leaver at a disadvantage to secure a job at the level to which he/she is trained. This year member companies can apply to the LTG to have the cost of registration and assessment covered by a bursary, up to £250 per individual. It is hoped that this bursary will help support employers and those entering the industry to get a foot on the ladder. composite decking The Millboard weathered oak collection will add style and elegance to any project. Made in the UK, the unique blend of polymer resin and fibres is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional timber. With a 25 year residential warranty Millboard expertly captures the charm of real wood but eliminates its shortcomings for outdoor environments. Due to its wood-free content, Millboard does not host algae growth and does not stain from food or drink, swell or rot. Having been awarded the highest classification for anti-slip and certified to BS79.76 standards, Millboard is the safest choice on the market. www.millboarddecking.com A deck is among the most attractive features a garden can have, but before you draw up any designs, you’ll have to choose a material. Natural wood decking might seem like an appealing choice, but bear in mind that wood requires staining, sealing, and lots of other time-consuming maintenance. Composite decking is a fantastic alternative. It’s long-lasting and practically maintenance-free! TimberTech’s decking products are sustainably sourced, and they’re designed to be almost indistinguishable from real wood. www.timbertechuk.co.uk

ecodek is a long life, low maintenance, slip resistant composite decking system available from Vannplastic Ltd – a British manufacturer based in Wrexham, North Wales. Solid composite deck boards like ecodek are a superior alternative to hardwood or softwood decking as they will not splinter, rot or split, and unlike timber decking it will not need sanding or sealing, meaning peace of mind in every purchase. ecodek has been used in over 5000 projects across the UK in the last 10 years due to the wide range of colours, lengths and profiles available. www.ecodek.co.uk

Dura Deck is a timber composite decking solution; it features a high percentage of wood which gives it a natural look but its polyethylene base means that it doesn’t suffer any of the pitfalls of natural wood decking. Unlike natural wood, Dura Deck won’t

crack, shrink, warp or rot. It is also resistant to light degradation thanks to UV inhibitors added during manufacturing, which ensure Dura Deck remains colour stable throughout its entire life cycle. Dura Deck is just as green as traditional wood as it is made of 87 per cent recycled materials and can be recycled after use. www.duracomposites.com

Distributed by Arbordeck and available through Howarth Timber and Building Supplies, Trex offers an environmentally focused, long-lasting, low-maintenance alternative to traditional softwood decking. Trex, which has been specifically designed and manufactured from 95 per cent recycled materials, is one of the most environmentally focused and weather-resistant composite decking products on the market. It will not fade, stain, rot or split and no painting or staining will ever be required. As well as being ultra-hardwearing and long-lasting, Trex is also easy to install and is designed with secret fix to provide a smooth, screw less finish. www.arbordeck.co.uk www.howarth-timber.co.uk

Years of investment in research and development by Timco Wood UK Limited has produced a highly accredited and tested system of decking, cladding, fencing and balustrade made from 100 per cent recycled wood chips and high density polyethylene plastics. It conserves the

earth’s natural resources and reduces the ever present issue of landfill. It is a man-made product that offers the natural warm feel of the wood combined with the best features of the polyethylene plastic including durability, stability, it doesn’t splinter, rot or warp, needs the minimum of maintenance and is very easy to install. www.timcowood.com

Lights, Camera, Action for CAMON turf cutter

CAMON top turf cutter hit the limelight when it starred in the new series of the peak time show, Love Your Garden, with Alan Titchmarsh. Since the first job to do in most garden makeovers is to strip a grassed area to make way for a new

surface, this robust, reliable CAMON machine plays a starring role, preparing the way for Alan Titchmarsh and his team of expert landscapers to work their magic. Jim Boyers, Production Manager on ‘Love Your Garden’, commented,

“What a joyous machine! If you’re ever faced with the back-breaking prospect of lifting your lawn, throw down that spade and get your hands on a Tracmaster turf cutter. I was amazed at how quick and neat it made the job.”The CAMON turf cutter is one of a range of highquality, robust groundcare machines designed and manufactured by Tracmaster in the UK.Tracmaster’s sales and marketing director, Alex Pitt, comments: “It was a great honour to be asked to supply a turf cutter for this popular TV show. It is a highly-regarded machine and cut out for the job!” Love Your Garden featured David Dodd of The Outdoor Room and David Domoney alongside Alan Titchmarsh. www.tracmaster.co.uk

Be prepared for ice and snow this winter Although the longest day may have passed it is summer and seems hardly the time to be thinking about the winter and snow. Then again it pays to start planning now for efficient snow and ice control so you’re fully prepared for the depths of winter. That is the advice from SnowEx who know a thing or two about winter maintenance, especially where Health & Safety legislation makes increasing demands on facilities management. SnowEx salt and grit spreaders have www.prolandscapermagazine.com

grown to become the professional choice across the UK and Europe. Designed to perform in the harshest conditions in the USA and Canada there’s a complete range to suit all requirements from towed spreaders for ATVs to mounted units for UTVs, 4x4s, pick-ups, trucks, tractors and trailers. SnowEx offers spreaders from 47 to 4500 litre capacity with in-cab

Europe’s biggest Gator fleet

Leading national plant and equipment hire company Morris Leslie Group, based in Perthshire and with nine depots throughout the UK, has recently expanded its hire fleet with the addition of 50 new John Deere HPX Gator 4x4 utility vehicles, ordered from Oxfordshire based dealer Farol Ltd. In what is the biggest individual order ever made for Gators in the UK, these new models join another 30 HPXs bought in 2012.Together with older Gators, this brings the total number of John Deere utility vehicles in the Morris Leslie fleet to 140, making it the biggest Gator hire fleet in Europe. The new machines will be based at Morris Leslie’s main plant hire depot in Woking, Surrey, and will be used mainly for short-term hire, both in the UK and abroad. Key customers include outdoor events and grounds maintenance contractors. Gators are also a popular choice for many other general transport applications requiring a strong, durable and versatile vehicle with high loading and towing capacities. www.deere.co.uk August 2013

BRUSHCUTTERS

Trimming up after the mower, edging lawns, clearing vegetation from trees, posts and the base of hedges and mowing in areas that can be inaccessible for bigger machines, the brushcutter is an indispensable tool for professional landscapers. Tracmaster’s new CAMON range has been designed to meet the need of all users and to satisfy wide-ranging working demand. The modern and innovative design of CAMON’s brushcutters includes features such as easy and safe refuelling thanks to the enlarged mouth of the fuel tank, a silenced muffler, pinion of gear case with double bearing, and an antivibration system. WWW.TRACMASTER.CO.UK

Billy Goat’s range of Brush Mowers will quickly reclaim overgrown grass, brambles and even areas where small trees and bushes have grown. The BC2600ICH is ideal for professional use, it can clear brush up to six feet high.

Three Peaks Extreme Challenge

PLEASE DONATE!

With only one month to go until Three Peaks Extreme, we find out how the challengers are shaping up. The team now need your donations – see below for how to pledge your support

Training –100 miles cycle per week plus two gym sessions and completed the London to Paris off road as a training ride. February and March were painful, I never knew you could get that cold on a bike. April and May brought better conditions Brian Herbert but work became more demanding. Points of focus are: diet, bike food, cadence, heart rates, physio visits (I had a twisted hip which cycling was aggravating), a fortune spent on kit (on top of bike layout), lower back pain, feeling guilty when leaving my five year old son playing football on his own whilst I squeeze in another training ride, cramps, hydration techniques, on average one stupid driver per week to contend with, killer pot holes, finalising routes, and sorting bike and kit transport to Scotland. Brian Herbert – Outdoor Options

I’ve been following the training manual since March. This has comprised of two gym sessions and three cycle rides, averaging 80 miles a week. The biggest pressure Paul Downer has been juggling cycling with other commitments. I have had two near crashes, firstly when travelling at 34 mph downhill and secondly, when a car pulled out in front of me and I had to make an emergency stop! I feel fitter and am eating healthier. I bought a road bike for my 15 year old son James and he has come out with me, something I’m sure we will carry on after the challenge. Paul Downer – Oak View Landscapes

I could say it’s a lifelong challenge achieved, or a great challenge in the name of charity but honestly I just fancy climbing some mountains with a load of landscapers! On a vaguely serious note – I’m a keen walker and spend many Lorraine Hartley weekends exploring the South Downs so really this is a natural progression.Training, so far so good, there are a few steep hills near me which after a few reps certainly get the heart rate going. I’ve found that downhill muscle groups and strong ankles are just as important as the up-hill muscles, as are knee supports! Lorraine Hartley – Provender Nurseries

I’m training as hard as I can, given work commitments. Matt O’Conner, Darren Skidmore and I have been doing longer rides. We just did one that was 100 miles John Wyer (although I did 107m as I got lost!). We have also completed a long ride in the Chilterns which although is only about 80 miles, it’s all hills. I cycled to court (during recent jury service) and back every day across the Chilterns. John Wyer – Bowles & Wyer
