PRO LANDSCAPER’S GUIDE TO THE

Sponsored by CED Stone Group

CED STONE GROUP WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME YOU TO PRO LANDSCAPER’S RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2015 SUPPLEMENT, THAT THIS YEAR WE HAVE THE PLEASURE OF SPONSORING... RHS Chelsea Flower show has the reputation for being the most prestigious and inspirational show of its kind in the world and it has become the premier show for designers, contractors and suppliers to showcase new ideas, products and skills by pushing the boundaries of product use, design and horticultural excellence year on year. Each year, the stars of the event are definitely the show gardens and almost every year (2015 being no exception), CED is heavily involved in at least one of them. Last year, however, one of the largest gardens we had the pleasure of supplying was Alan Tichmarsh’s garden ‘From the Moors to the Sea’. This garden, project managed by the talented Kate Gould and constructed by Landform Consultants, was not a show garden in the traditional

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Chelsea intros 2.indd 3

sense, but a celebration of the RHS Britain in Bloom 50 year anniversary, which also coincided with Alan’s 50 years in horticulture. The RHS notwithstanding, in recent years the philanthropic side to Chelsea has become a much more integral part of the show as it provides a world class platform for charities to raise their profiles internationally, and over the years we have supported many Chelsea gardens for various charities. It is the involvement of these charities, often endorsed by current celebrities, which helps to create the media frenzy that surrounds the show. This in turn raises the profile of all RHS shows, the gardens, the plants, the designers, indeed all involved and, in our opinion, enables our industry to show just what can be achieved by top class design and construction, while at the same

time enabling us all to give something back to those less fortunate. For many, Chelsea is almost a swear word, but for us, it is an inspiration. From supplying products, to helping construct a garden, we have been given the chance to help the best designers and contractors in the world achieve their visions through our extensive product and technical knowledge, design and installation advice. We understand that hard landscaping plays a vital role in garden design and it is more often than not the skeleton upon which the great gardens are built. Maybe this is why CED has, for over 20 years, been able to help inspire and create some of the most spectacular gardens at Chelsea and why we hope we will continue to do so for the next 20.

WELCOME... Welcome to the Pro Landscaper RHS Chelsea Flower Show supplement. We now find ourselves at that most wonderful time of the year when landscape design and build excellence is showcased at the most prestigious event in the horticultural calendar. Most of the Main Avenue show gardens will have been in the process of being designed with materials carefully sourced and selected for the best part of nine months, so it’s no wonder that tensions will have been high for the past few weeks. No doubt designers and landscapers will now be pleased they can get on with making their creations come to life. The story behind these beautiful spaces is equally interesting. Sponsors will have given a brief and the designer needs to interpret the message in a way that the general public will understand and remember. The landscape team will usually help in specifying the best materials and plants to use and together designers and contractors consult with suppliers, so any success is truly a joint effort. Our 36-page supplement includes exclusive interviews with all the designers and landscape teams involved in this year’s show, you can see all the plan drawings and also find out about a selection of the trade stands exhibiting at this year’s event. We hope you enjoy this addition to Pro Landscaper. The Pro Landscaper team will be at the show so if you see us, do please stop and let us know what you think. All that remains is to wish everyone involved the very best of luck and thank CED Ltd for joining with us to make this supplement possible.

How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? This is my second show garden at Chelsea. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? The obvious answer is on the Sunday with a cold beer in my hand, but if truth be told, it’s the third day of planting. Most machines are off site by then, so there’s more peace and

Peter Clay, Crocus How were you selected to work with the designer? We have worked with Dan Pearson previously but on plant procurement rather than landscape projects. This will be our first time working with him at Chelsea and we are very much looking forward to it. How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? Our first was in 2000, and since then we have won 21 Gold medals and five Best in Show awards. Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used on the garden? Yes, we generally do the whole

thing and work together to select the products. Usually the designer will lead on any special features – we have differing degrees of involvement depending on the designer we are working with. How many people will be on your team during the build? There will be a team of eight, plus there’s Crocus nursery staff so there are plenty of people involved. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? We always aim to finish gardens on the Friday night before the show opens so my favourite time will be the Saturday morning before the show.

All plants have been supplied by Hardy’s and all trees have been supplied by Hilliers. What will happen to your garden after the show? The garden will be divided up and relocated to a number of gardens belonging to the Autistic Society.

Anthony J Berry, London Landscapes How were you selected to work with the designer? We tendered for the landscaping on Alan Gardner’s The Autistic Gardener television programme, commissioned by Channel 4, produced by Betty. We won the job, filmed the show and were later asked by Alan to build his show garden for Chelsea. How many times have you been involved with any gardens at Chelsea? We are very much the newcomers, having never

worked at Chelsea. We are very grateful to Alan, Viking Cruises, Hillier Landscapes and the RHS for this fantastic opportunity. Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used? We are working in association with the connoisseurs, Hillier Landscapes. They have been fantastic working with Alan and sourcing products and suppliers. I’m an admirer of Patrick Hurst, who is the artist providing the sculpture, his work is displayed at Riverhill Gardens in Sevenoaks, local to where we’re based. How many people will be on your team during the build? We’re a family run business with a small team from South East London, so there’ll just be the four of us. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? Reflecting on the finished article and seeing what the public make of it. THE HOMEBASE GARDEN Exhibitor/Sponsor: Homebase Designer: Adam Frost Contractor: Bespoke Outdoor Spaces

Adam Frost How did you win the project? I’ve been working with Homebase for three years now and this will be our third show garden. How did you choose your contractor? I had seen Jody’s work before at Chelsea and was keen to work with him. I was also interested to learn that he works with WorldSkills and believes in training, which tied in perfectly with the Homebase Garden Academy – the scheme I set up with Homebase to help unearth Britain’s new gardening talent.

Taking inspiration from the work of modernist architect Marcel Breuer, Adam Frost’s garden represents the balance of nature and the manmade environment.

Which nursery is supplying the plants? Kelways, Roger Platt Nurseries, Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants and Deepdale Trees. Lindum Turf is also providing a brand new wildflower turf mix for us. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? I like to be in the Grand Pavilion really early. I just love the feeling, the smell and the array of gorgeous plants in one place. for Homebase and plants from the garden will be sold to raise money to fund Macmillan nursing hours. Nothing goes to waste.

How were you selected to work with the designer? Adam’s passion for sharing knowledge ties in with my own ethos of teaching and training.

How did you choose your contractor? Crocus has built several gardens for The Telegraph in the past. It’s the first time we have worked with them in this capacity and the relationship has been going very well.

MORGAN STANLEY HEALTHY CITIES GARDEN Exhibitor/Sponsor: Morgan Stanley Designer: Chris Beardshaw Contractor: Keith Chapman Landscapes Chris Beardshaw returns to Chelsea with a garden that forms an integral part of Morgan Stanley’s international Healthy Cities initiative.

Chris Beardshaw How did you win the project? We were asked by Morgan Stanley if we would like to design the show garden in line with the firm’s global Healthy Cities programme and a much larger community project they are developing in Poplar in East London. Having been involved in many community projects over the years, I was excited as it provides a challenge to create a beautiful standalone show garden which also has to go on to work successfully within a much wider long term community garden project. How did you choose your contractor? We have worked with Keith Chapman for several years now on both show gardens and private client projects. His team is highly professional and understands the high standards we are required to work to. We work well as a team. Which nursery is supplying the plants? We have chosen to work with a number of specialist small nurseries this year for our key plants. We are also working with Deepdale Trees for our trees and hedging, as they are familiar with the demands of shows, provide an excellent service and high quality plants. Who are the suppliers for the hard landscaping products? The hard landscaping, like in most

14

of our show gardens, is minimal. I prefer to let the plants do the talking. We do have limestone paving paths, which are provided by AD Calverts. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? I will be on site throughout the build and do get heavily involved in the construction through to completion, which I enjoy. But for me as a plantsman, when the plants arrive and I can get really creative, that’s the time I like best. Although we do have an outline planting plan, it’s always quite fluid. I like to be spontaneous and work with the colours and textures of the plants as they arrive. I then play and compose the scheme to create the final tapestry. What will happen to your garden after the show? The garden has been designed specifically to be relocated almost entirely, immediately after the show. It will become the centrepiece of a newly developed Morgan Stanley community space which will include a safe place for children to learn and play, a location for community events and dedicated areas for residents to grow their own produce. The construction of the Poplar garden is taking place simultaneously to Chelsea and will be completed in June 2015. I will be overseeing the relocation.

THE HIDDEN BEAUTY OF KRANJI WITH ESMOND & UNISEAL Exhibitor: Esmond/Uniseal Sponsors: Esmond Landscapes/Uniseal Designers: John Tan & Raymond Toh Contractor: Landform Consultants John Tan and Raymond Toh’s debut at RHS Chelsea is inspired by Kranji, a suburb of Singapore with a lush natural landscape home to tropical plants, orchid farms and nature reserve wetlands.

John Tan How did you win the project? After years of competing in international and local landscape competitions and winning top awards such as the Landscape Industry Association (Singapore) Award of Excellence, we felt we could try for a place at Chelsea. It was a tough selection process, but we were fortunate to be shortlisted and finally approved. We hope that our garden design will depict the Singapore landscape that inspired us.

THE TIME IN BETWEEN WITH HUSQVARNA AND GARDENA Exhibitor: Inspired Exteriors Sponsors: Husqvarna & Gardena Designer: Charlie Albone Contractor: Conway Landscaping & Design

Charlie Albone What process did you go through to win the project? I’ve always wanted to design a Chelsea garden, the prestige of the show is only amplified by the distance between Australia and England. Once the design was complete, finding sponsorship was the taxing part. Luckily Husqvarna and Gardena saw the benefits of being associated with the best flower show in the world. How did you choose your contractor? I have worked with Conway Landscaping on many jobs in Australia and together we helped build Alan Titchmarsh’s garden last year. Which nursery is supplying the plants? Kelways and Deepdale Trees. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? Planting – you see the garden come to life.

Charlie Albone’s first RHS Chelsea Show Garden is a space to update his late father about his life since his father passed away. What will happen to your garden after the show? What isn’t sold will go to my mum’s house and the stone will come home to my garden.

Mick Conway, Conway Landscaping & Design

Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used on the garden? Charlie Albone knew exactly what he wanted in terms of materials, plants etc, but I have been involved all the way in liaising with the suppliers and making sure his design is built and grown exactly as he envisions it.

How were you selected to work with the designer? I met Charlie Albone when he was presenting a documentary on the 2013 Best in Showwinning Australian Chelsea garden that I worked on for Phil Johnson and Trailfinders.

How many people will be on your team? We have 16 men and women from all over Australia and even some from the UK who have been selected for their expertise, experience and enthusiasm.

How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? It’s always been my dream to build at Chelsea. I visited in 2011 just to have a look but returned in 2012 and 2013 on the Australian teams. Although there wasn’t an Australian garden in 2014, I brought over a team to build an English garden. I couldn’t miss a year!

What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? I love opening day. The exhilaration of proudly presenting that garden to the public is a thrill that overrides the exhaustion. Hard landscaping suppliers ●

C apricorn Quarries, Australia

How did you choose your contractor? This is our first time at Chelsea and Landform Consultants was recommended to us by James Basson and Andy Sturgeon.

What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? At Chelsea we enjoy seeing old friends we’ve met at garden shows around the world.

Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used? We are sourcing rocks, timber gravels and dead trees for the orchids to be attached to.

Are you able to reveal the budget? Around £300,000.

What will happen to your garden after the show? The orchids and tropical plants will be donated.

How many people will be on your team during the build? There will be a crew of five initially, joined by a specialist planting team of three. The Singapore team will also be sending a crew.

Which nursery is supplying the plants? We are airfreighting close to 1.5tons of native orchids directly from Singapore and they are all grown in Kranji. Most of the tropical plants will be sourced from Holland. Who are the suppliers for the hard landscaping products? The main structures are being built in Singapore.

Mark Gregory, Landform Consultants How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? I have built over 85 gardens at Chelsea, plus trade stands and RHS works. This is my 26th consecutive year. I’ve worked out three years of my working life has been spent on site!

What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? For me it’s the first few days. The excitement, catching up with friends, landscapers at their best. As the build goes on it becomes more pressurised and more focused!

FRESH BREAKTHROUGH BREAST CANCER GARDEN Designed by: Ruth Willmott Built by: Cube 1994 Sponsored by: Breakthrough Breast Cancer Ruth returns to RHS Chelsea with Breakthrough Breast Cancer, appearing for the first time at the flower show. The garden draws inspiration from the genetic research and breakthroughs into breast cancer being funded by the charity.

Ruth Willmott What process did you go through to win the project? After submitting a design we went through two judging panels and received a letter confirming a place shortly after. How did you choose your contractor? I approached Cube 1994 to build at Chelsea 2013. I called Sean Butler as soon as I knew we would submit a garden for 2015, so this is my second Chelsea garden with his team.

What will happen to your garden after the show? The plants, hedging, trees and sculpture are available to buy with funds going to the charity.

Sean Butler, Cube 1994 How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? This will be our third year. Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used? We’ve been included in the planning right from the start.

Which nursery is supplying the plants for your garden?

How many people will be on your team?

Kelways for plants, Deepdale Trees for trees and shrubs.

There will be seven of us.

What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? I like the quiet early mornings during the show week before the gates open for visitors.

“These gardens take away the constraints of a defined category, we are looking for show gardens that will engage both media and visitors alike through design innovation and creative use of existing and new materials. We are challenging designers to be brave and step outside the perceived traditional Chelsea garden. Designers can create a space that fits their purpose, concept and budgetary constraints. Fresh Gardens are about a feel and vibe.”

DARK MATTER GARDEN FOR THE NATIONAL SCHOOLS’ OBSERVATORY D esigned by: Howard Miller Design Built by: Landstruction Sponsored by: Science and Technology Facilities Council & National Schools’ Observatory (NSO) Aiming to excite and inspire schoolchildren in the study of science through astronomy, the National Schools’ Observatory’s garden is an analogy of dark matter’s effect upon light.

Howard Miller How did you choose your contractor? We’ve worked with Landstruction on three previous gardens at Tatton and David is a self-admitted show junkie. Are you able to reveal the budget for this garden? The budget is £67,000. Which nursery is supplying the plants? Ladybrook Nursery in Manchester. They are new to us for show gardens but have a great reputation.

Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used? We work closely with designers on all schemes we become involved in and this has been no exception.

What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? The planting. I’m an architect but my family had a nursery.

What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? Seeing the lattice framework we’re building fit together seamlessly in situ at Chelsea will put a smile on my face!

What will happen to your garden after the show? We’re going to relocate it.

BEYOND OUR BORDERS BY APHA Designed by: Sarah Eberle Built by: Belderbos Landscapes Sponsored by: The Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) Aimed at families with children, the Home: Personal Universe Garden encourages a conversation between parents and children through nature while emphasising the importance of spending time with family.

Fuminari Todaka What process did you go through to win this project for Chelsea 2015? The Chelsea Flower Show is the highest peak of world garden design. I wanted to convey Japanese culture at the show, and share a mutual love of gardening with people from around the world. How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? This is my first time as an exhibitor. However, I was part of Mr Kazuyuki Ishihara’s team in 2007 and 2008. Which nursery is supplying the plants for your garden? Evergreen Exteriors and Majestic Trees. We will use an automatic watering system to sustain the plants. The boundary uses rugged stones, defending the softer, more welcoming stones of the centre. To this I will add the natural rhythm of crystal clear water over high transparency glass. The bridge is formed from concrete to prevent slippage. Who are the suppliers for the hard landscaping products? I get most of our material and traders from my home town of Aichi, Japan. How many people will be on your team during the build? Seven people on site, ten people altogether from Japan.

18

What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? I think when I take a picture with my staff in our new garden. What will happen to your garden after the show? We will be exhibiting the garden at the 10th anniversary of Japan’s Expo2005 Aichi Commemorative Park.

What process did you go through to win the project? I responded to a request via an SGD round robin that attached a design brief. I thought the brief was interesting and decided to sit down and spend a few hours on a concept design. This was selected by APHA. Which nursery is supplying the plants? Dave Root at Kelways. Who are the suppliers for the hard landscaping? There are very few, but the metal water trays that represent the oceans are being constructed by my husband, red sand (for Australasia) has been recycled

The theme of The Fragrance Garden is perfume making and reflects the cross fertilisation of nature and science, as well as traditional flower perfumes.

Sheena Seeks What process did you go through to win the project? I was invited by Harrods to design a Fresh garden for them based on fragrance. I looked into the science of perfume making and that formed the basis for my concept and design. I structured the concept around the process called ‘enfleurage’. Then everything was submitted in the usual way to the RHS selection panel. How did you choose your contractor? I worked with Douglas Laughton of Eden Landscape Projects in 2014 on my Hampton Court ‘Conceptual’ garden. I first met him there a year before when he was building the garden next to mine. I had plenty of time to see how good he was at his job and asked him then if he would build my next garden with me.

Sarah Eberle

Which nursery is supplying the plants for your garden? I asked several nurseries and not one could supply my mix of very common plants. I decided then to approach the growers directly. They were all very helpful. All of them are Chelsea exhibitors. David Austin is supplying the roses. The shrubs and trees are from Deepdale Trees. Violas from Victorian Violets and the narcissi from Jonny Walkers. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? The best bit is the build. What will happen to your garden after the show? Harrods would like to relocate it somewhere.

from Jim Foggerty’s garden at Hampton Court. How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? Seven medals for design and twice as project manager. What will happen to your garden after the show? A mixture of several different recycling homes. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? Every day until roughly 5pm when tiredness takes over.

Belderbos Landscapes How were you selected to work with the designer? We have worked with Sarah on several projects over the years in and around London. How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? We helped on the BALI stand in 2013, but this is the first time that we will be involved in a garden at Chelsea. How many people will be on your team during the build? Just two.

What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? We always enjoy the whole build up to Chelsea going live. It is fantastic to be part of this exciting process. You see amazing creations unfolding and everyone in the industry pulls together to make the whole show a success. I think it is a shame and a missed opportunity for the public not to be able to see the before

and after of the Chelsea Flower Show. It would be wonderful if an aerial walkway could be built above it – so the public could see the gardens being constructed. This would provide an aerial perspective and a real appreciation of the work involved in the build up. It is arguable that this is more interesting than just seeing the final product.

THE FRAGRANCE GARDEN FROM HARRODS – HEART NOTES Designed by: Sheena Seeks Built by: Eden Landscape Projects Sponsored by: Harrods

Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used? I’ve been consulted by Sheena on various materials and finishes, but she is a trained artist and is using companies that have helped in the past on show gardens. She wanted a fascia around the raised deck that had the appearance of old flaking paintwork. I’ve been working with a company called Igma Imaging who have undertaken to print an effect on reclaimed

timber. I’ve also been working with Simon Hebditch of Inspired Metal from Somerset to provide framework for the augmented reality screens that have to look like books. I’ve worked with him before for the ‘Arek Luc’ garden, he mostly specialises in more artistic garden art but he was happy to help with this. My local builders merchants Higgins of Wellingborough have been very keen to help with basic build materials and

transport. Lindum Turf is helping out with supply and fit of its turf over the main garden. How many people will be on your team during the build? We should have six or seven people on site during the build. I’m making as much as I can in modular form now to take down with us. Jake Catlin of The Landscape Consultant has worked with me before on projects at shows, so he will be there as well.

What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? I always enjoy the first morning on show sites and getting stuck into the build. By the end exhaustion tends to temper the fun of having the garden finished!

The World Vision garden is inspired by the breathtaking beauty of Cambodia. Orange rods represent rice paddy fields, with the dark water illustrating the fear of hunger that children in Cambodia live with.

Dyofix is once more supplying its water dye to create the dark reflective surface of the pool. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? The Sunday evening prior to press day is the time to examine the work, and see how close it has come to the original concept. It is a moment of reflection before the madness descends. What will happen to your garden after the show? The garden will be recreated at RHS Hampton Court. After that core elements will be donated to community projects and schools in Brixton, London.

The Water Station Garden aims to raise awareness of the protection of drinking water, inspired by the traditional collection and storing of rainwater in Karst, Slovenia.

Ricky Goodwin, The Garden Builders How were you selected to work with the designers? Recommendations from other designers and our previous work history. Sometimes the RHS gives our details to a perspective designer with no preferred contractor. Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used? Yes, on all gardens we are consulted on both finishing materials and planting, from our previous shows and out of show experience. Some designers need more advice and hand holding, whereas some have firm

ideas and only want advice on build methodology and make all decisions on finish – we offer our expertise accordingly. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? My favourite part is the last few days of build up, when you finish the garden the way it was supposed to be done but you still don’t have an award. THE OLD FORGE FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE ASSOCIATION Designed by: Jodie Fedorko & Martin Anderson Built by: Twigs Gardens Sponsored by: Motor Neurone Disease Association

Designed to raise awareness of motor neurone disease, Jodie Fedorko and Martin Anderson’s garden is based around a neglected forge which has become a haven for wildflowers.

Martin Anderson What process did you go through to win the project? The process began over a year ago when I decided to do a real Artisan garden. The research included going to several forges. This was followed by finding out what wildflowers would be out towards the end of May and sourcing them. I think the public like flowers, not a load of stone or a great expanse of water. The aim of the garden is to increase awareness of Motor Neurone Disease. In the last two gardens where I won Gold medals I used a student as a co-designer to help them get on in their career. This year it’s Jodie Fedorko, who is only 22. How did you choose your contractor? On recommendation I asked Richard Wanless of Twigs Gardens to do the construction. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive? Hopefully the favourite time will be around 7.30pm on Tuesday 19 May when the results are announced!

Richard Wanless, Twigs Gardens How were you selected to work with the designer? Steve Moody and Tina Vallis of Frogheath Landscapes kindly suggested us to the coordinator of this year’s Motor Neurone Disease Association garden. How many times have you been involved at Chelsea? Never before. Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used? We have sourced and acquired the building and reclaimed materials, from geotextiles to chimney pots. How many people will be on your team during the build? Five. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? The day we leave.

How did you choose your contractor? The contractor is my own company, John Everiss Design, working with Andrew Loudon. As well as being a good friend, Andy has worked with me on several projects and produces exceptional stonework. What will happen to your garden after the show? It’s to be permanently installed in Astley Park, Chorley, Lancashire – my home town! It’s going to be an educational exhibit for school trips. Which nursery is supplying the plants for your garden? Grasses are being supplied by Wildly Rural in Cumbria, some perennials from Rectory Garden Nursery in Cheshire. Specimen plants, herbs and the remaining

perennials are being contract grown by La Serra Exclusive Plants in Holland. Finally the wildflower turf is being supplied by Lindum Turf. Who are the suppliers for the hard landscaping products? Most of the stonework has been salvaged from various reclaimation yards. The parachute pathway has been carved from portland stone, supplied by Stone Firms Ltd in Dorset.

Andrew Loudon, Dry Stone Walling How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? This is the tenth consecutive year I have contributed to various gardens at Chelsea. How many people will be on your team during the build? I will have six team members on site at Chelsea. What’s your favourite time from the day you arrive on site? All my time there is both challenging and enjoyable.

A TRUGMAKER’S GARDEN BY FUTURE CLIMATE INFO Designed by: Serena Fremantle & Tina Vallis Built by: Frogheath Landscapes Ltd Sponsored by: Future Climate Info

Serena Fremantle What process did you go through to win the project? The idea of a trugmaker’s garden developed quickly when we began thinking of crafts traditional to our area of East Sussex and Kent, and we were drawn to the ageless simplicity of trugs. How did you choose your contractor? Walking through the RHS Chelsea 2014 exhibition I overheard someone say ‘if I was ever going

to do an Artisan Chelsea garden I would get Frogheath Landscapes as my contractor’. That snippet of conversation stuck in my mind. I did some research and realised they were 30 minutes down the road from where I lived. On meeting with Frogheath they suggested I team up with their freelance designer, Tina Vallis.

What process did you go through to win the project? I was selected following a recommendation. How did you choose your contractor? Tom Hare and myself are building the garden (alongside my husband) and this is the first time I have worked with Tom. Which nursery is supplying the plants for your garden? Hillier Nurseries is supplying the plants free of charge and

A Trugmaker’s Garden celebrates the traditional skills of the Sussex trugmakers, who today continue to make the iconic willow and sweet chestnut garden trugs.

How many times have you been involved with Chelsea? Last year’s garden at Chelsea was our first show garden, so it was a baptism of fire for the Frogheath team, but the experience was fantastic and

made all the better with an award of a Gold medal. Have you been consulted on the materials and plants used? It’s very much a team effort. How many people will be on your team during the build? Seven, with more skilled craftsmen at different stages of the build. What’s your favourite time? The final tweaks to ensure the garden is as perfect as possible.

What will happen to your garden after the show? It is going to the new Haven located at Tichfield Hants.

In his tenth appearance at RHS Chelsea, designer Kazuyuki Ishihara’s garden reflects the Edo gardening boom which, 400 years ago, encouraged all Japanese people to consider their horticultural habits.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING AT CHELSEA? Leading industry figures tell Pro Landscaper what they can’t wait to see and do

For me the most exciting aspect of RHS Chelsea is seeing the world-class designs in the show gardens. The innovative use of new and traditional materials is always fascinating for me as a designer and I love to seek out new ideas to inspire our projects. The big challenge is trying not to be distracted by all the wonderful plants in the show gardens. The standard of horticulture is unbelievably high and provides an amazing showcase for our wonderful industry to the public. In fact we can guarantee to receive many new enquiries in the weeks after Chelsea, for which we are very grateful!

Dave Green

I’m most looking forward to seeing the rejuvenated Fresh area this year. With new sculptures, new paving and fantastic gardens, I think it’ll be more impressive than ever.

I’ve often wondered what would happen if RHS Chelsea Flower Show took place in the autumn – for a complete change of planting palette and quality of light. I know that’s unlikely to happen as the show traditionally kicks off the London season, and because the media and horticultural industry have grown around it. Even so, I’ll be looking out for fresh, innovative planting combinations that have both wow factor and sustainable credentials. I’ll also pay particular attention to the gardens and displays about and for people’s health and wellbeing.

Jody Lidgard

The del Buono Gazerwitz garden last year was a lovely design that used natural materials in a simple way. I wonder whether anyone will manage to better it this year.

Every year the lead-up to Chelsea gives me goosebumps and I feel so privileged to present from the show for the BBC. This year I am again presenting The People’s Choice Award from the show gardens and while I do have to remain impartial, I’d be lying if I said that Dan Pearson’s Laurent-Perrier Chatsworth Garden on the triangle at the end of Main Avenue didn’t fill me with anticipation.

Andrew Fisher Tomlin

For me it will be the big revival in country gardens led by Jo Thompson for M&G.

I’m very much looking forward to working alongside Adam Frost and 20 apprentices on the Homebase garden.

Mark Fenton

I would be really excited to see some show gardens that are adventurous and a break from tradition. RHS Chelsea Flower Show should be at the forefront of garden design rather than playing a ‘me too’ game. It will be interesting to see if there is anything new to be seen this year. I for one am really pleased that a garden designer (Tom Harfleet) is now show manager and I hope to see more changes and diversification in future years.

I will be looking forward to seeing the bespoke and high quality sculptural features in terms of their style, form and materials, both in the show gardens and on stands. I have always been interested in sculpture in the garden but a recent commission for a modern minimalist ecohouse landscape including courtyards has brought sculptural elements to the top of my mind!

Dan Pearson’s garden. It’s been a decade since he appeared at Chelsea, so I look forward to seeing his garden with anticipation.
