NEWS SHED The Inaugural Cape Town Flower Show Thousands of people flocked to the Castle of Good Hope in the Mother City for the inaugural Cape Town Flower Show. The show which set out to become South Africa’s leading flower show with the aim to artistically display the brilliant diversity of the Cape’s flora; inspire its visitors to value their outdoor spaces and environment; and provide a platform for the local horticultural industry to promote itself- lived up to all expectations.
The Floral Kingdom of Table Mountain garden celebrated local fynbos, while others demonstrated everything from the Cape Winelands, to small spaces utilised well. However, the show was about more than just enjoying beauty. “We are paying homage to the water wise element right now because we have just had more restrictions imposed on us so it is very relevant. People need to learn how they
can conserve water and use water more wisely in their gardens so that they do not lose their gardens,” says Cape Town Flower Show’s Karey Evett. The flower show coincided with the commemoration of the Castle’s 350th anniversary and has positioned itself to become a jewel event on Cape Town’s annual festival calendar www.capetownflowershow.co.za
It provided inspiring, contextual, and relevant information and helped promote the importance of sustaining our local biodiversity as a precious natural resource. Twenty show gardens were on display with both local and exotic species with a strong focus on keeping spaces green despite stringent water restrictions. It was a welcomed feast of colour as summer arrived in Cape Town. The show gardens were designed by top landscape architects and showed exactly what can be done with a bit of flair.

Garden Route to grow greener with Reliance compost
Days of Wine and Roses at Vergelegen
Reliance, the leading organic compost provider in the Western Cape, are thrilled to announce the opening of their new depot in George, where they will be supplying certified organic compost and product mixes to the Garden Route’s green industry.
Vergelegen, the 316-year-old wine estate in Somerset West renowned for its 18 exquisite gardens, has a fresh summer attraction: a magnificent, world-class rose garden, displaying over 80 different rose varieties.
The Premium Range benefits include more efficient nutrient uptake by plant roots, greater root development, as well as improves drought tolerance to name but a few.
As one of only a few South African carbon neutral businesses, Reliance has had its Founder of Reliance Compost, Eddie composting technology approved as a Redelinghuys says, ‘For years the Garden Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction method, Route had to contend with compost with and over the years prevented more than 800 the wrong Carbon to Nitrogen ratio due to 000 tons of carbon dioxide gas escaping into the high levels of wood waste in local compost. the atmosphere – a substantial contribution This leading to nitrogen depletion from soils to reducing the impact caused by climate and yellowing of young plants. Following a huge horticultural undertaking involving 1200 tonnes of virgin soil, 90 tonnes of peach pips, 40 tonnes of compost and 1500 new roses, the revamped rose garden was formally opened on Friday 28 October. The extensive collection of blooms – many specially chosen for their glorious scent, as well as beautiful appearance – spans miniature roses to rambling climbers, heritage blooms and newlybred hybrids that can be viewed by the public for the first time. The new garden has been designed in Vergelegen’s trademark octagonal shape, with a colour palette that transitions from reds, oranges and yellows to whites on the right and from purples, deep and light pinks to white on the left. Its central feature is a bronze sculpture of a woman entitled Aphrodite (the Greek goddess of love and beauty), created by Kenyan-born artist Stanislaw Trzebinski. Water cascades from the sculpture into an octagonal pool of water. “We wanted to stimulate the sight, scent and hearing senses immediately and for visitors to enjoy a feeling of discovery,” said Vergelegen horticulturist Richard Arm, who was closely involved in the project from inception, with particular responsibility for the landscaping and irrigation. The rose garden is ideally located at the edge of a camphor tree forest, forming a magnificent amphitheatre to the south and west of the site. To the north there is a view to the homestead and its five enormous camphor trees, declared national monuments in 1942. A cottage-style herbaceous border of heritage roses, indigenous bulbs, foxgloves and other perennials frames the estate’s picnic building at the far end. Persimmon and avocado trees and a hedgerow complete the exquisite surroundings. www.ovp.co.za

Green building is hip… and it’s happening It’s not been quite 10 years, but in that time 200 buildings and eight interior spaces have achieved Green Star SA (GSSA) certifications from the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA). It’s quite a leap from the single certification issued in 2009 and the six years it took to get to the 100 mark. The movement is exhibiting exponential growth, the last 108 certifications issued in a mere 15 months.
www.prolandscaper.co.za
Green impact Today, the 2.8m square metres (equivalent to 400 rugby fields) of GBCSA certified space has saved 336m kilograms of carbon emissions (equivalent to taking 84 000 cars off the road) and 260m litres of water, the latter equating to the daily water consumption of 100m people. Annual electricity saving is 280m kilowatt hours, equivalent to powering 19 500 households for a year. Greening South Africa Green building in SA accounts for 41% of building project activity against a 24% global average. In total, 61% of building projects are expected to be green by 2018 against a global average of 37%. The Dodge Data Analytics World Green Building Trends 2016 SmartMarket Report found that South Africa has the highest green share currently
of any country in the study and could become a leader in the green building sector within three years, says Brian Wilkinson, CEO of the GBCSA. The bulk of the country’s green buildings fall within the commercial property sector. Given the financial rewards on offer, SA’s real estate investment trusts (Reits) have embraced the greening movement. Growthpoint Properties owns or co-owns the largest portfolio of Green Star SA certified buildings, 50 in total. In the public sector 13 buildings have received GBCSA certification and all 278 municipalities in the country now GBCSA members. The residential sector is also making major green inroads, 2 382 green homes earmarked for EDGE certification (the residential rating tool) while another 5 000 are targeting certification. www.gbcsa.org.za

Are we damaging our industry’s reputation by under quoting to win a tender?
Judy Panton-Jones
Leon Kluge,
Director of JPJ Landscapes, horticulturist and principal member of SALI.
Award winning landscape and garden designer
From my perspective as a Consultant in the green industry, I have noticed a disappointing trend beginning to creep in with the Corporates and Large property owners. Onerous budgets have caused them to make financial decisions to rather choose cleaning services over and above professional Landscape Maintenance Companies, to maintain high profile landscapes. These spaces also often include maintaining specialised Indoor Landscapes. The highly trained and experienced Horticulturist who oversees well trained Gardening staff, who are passionate about their work, is something of the past. Sadly these high profile sites are being left to the demise of staff that have zero understanding of green spaces, let alone any passion. Corporates no longer value the art of landscape maintenance which is leading to a decline of excellence in our industry.
From an avant-garde designer's point of view, pushing for originality in landscape design, my off the cuff answer would be absolutely. It dumbs down our creativity within the industry as the cheap undercutting of designs has very little to offer in terms of actual design mostly because of limited time spend on the designing process itself. Basically you get what you pay for. I have seen situations over and over again where developers were called back to redo landscapes because they used landscapers and designers that are under cutting and in the end delivered a product that is not to standard in every aspect from the installation and the plant choices to the plant material quality, irrigation and most importantly -the creativity of the landscape design.
Any good and well thought out/ out-of-the-box design that would provide a wow factor to a development, making potential buyers interested My work as a Consultant overseeing such sites and complimenting the building design costs has become even more necessary and very often money. It is not cut and paste design. the vision of the sites are not understood. If I can I know there are 2 sides to this coin, and bring any solution to this downward trend, my expenses need to be covered. The question recommendations to the Corporates is to insist lies with you, will I be the cheapest and on training and a return to a service provider that therefore risk my creative spirit as a designer, will focus on Horticultural excellence. Or will you be your true creative self and push the boundaries within our industry- but at the expense of realising that you will constantly be undercut. The true answer lies somewhere in-between the 2.

Ida Breed Prof Landscape Architecture, ILASA President. Definitely. Under quoting exists in all industries but is prolific in the landscape industry. One can also put less plants per square meter, smaller plants, seedlings and even seeds to reduce the cost. You can also leave out essentials like mulch, compost, good quality soil etc., which the client won’t notice. Developers are often not able to compare apples with apples when it comes to landscape bills. Especially if there is not a fixed bill that has to be priced by all tendering contractors, the client or developer has no idea what exactly they will get, but they often just look at the bottom line: the price. Accepting the lowest tender is the main culprit of this situation and it leads to low quality installations. If government and industry can move away from selecting the lowest tender and rather pick the “middle” tender, the reputation and quality of work in the industry will rise.

e are operating in a visual industry and high resolution photography is essential. Whether for case studies or showcasing your work through your website portfolio, quality images are key. In order to achieve real results, it’s best to move away from the camera on your smartphone and invest in a dedicated camera. These are covered briefly in the table opposite, to give you a general overview of types and average cost.
Quality photographs convey a positive message to both your clients and landscape architects, and allow the recipient to take an immediate view on the standards you are achieving on site. It is important to photograph all aspects of your work. Strong images of trees in leaf, whether displaying a strong flowering period or rich autumn colours, will add a lot to your photographs. TIPS
WHICH CAMERA? Cameras fall into three basic categories. Below, we’ve shown a mid-range camera for each category and its respective price.
Compact cameras Compact cameras are small handheld cameras offering good quality imagery at affordable prices, without the bulk of a DSLR or bridge camera. Whilst these cameras are very limited they can certainly achieve a good quality photo. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX60 RRP: £149
Bridge cameras A bridge camera is based on the principles of a compact point and shoot camera but with the added bonus of a larger lens and higher ISO range, amongst others. Bridge cameras give you the high quality imagery you require but without the large price tag of a DSLR. worthwhile and sends out a strong message. Many of the higher value tenders are now stipulating a 70/30 quality price submission. Clients are moving away from lowest price awards and are enjoying the freedom of evaluating quality. Whilst many aspects are covered in the assessment of quality, it is absolutely essential that you support your tender bids with strong photographic images. This is less important in the main contractor market, but it is nevertheless a good discipline across the board. Weather dominates the landscaping world, as we all know, and this is definitely also the case with site photography. What a difference a day makes is clearly borne out with photography results. A blue sky is a must – even the best camera will not hide a dull day. It is also essential for suppliers to promote their product range in the best way possible. It‘s important for CPD presentations for landscape architects who tend to back with visual confidence ahead of technical appraisal. It is costly to produce marketing material, so it’s worth getting it right. www.prolandscaper.co.za
BEFORE YOU SHOOT Weather In terms of landscaping shots, you want to be looking for a clear day or evening. Be cautious if it has rained considerably on previous days as the ground may be sodden and standing water may be an issue. Timing It is important to take your photographs directly after a maintenance visit. This will ensure that the site will be in pristine condition. Day/night Daytime shots are great for hard and soft landscaping, as they allow for the vibrancy of your planting and the complex shadows and lines of your hard landscaping. Night photography is difficult but can reward you with fantastic pictures – I wouldn’t advise taking night shots unless you have a high quality DSLR or bridge camera. It’s all about shutter speed, aperture, patience and a tripod.
Canon PowerShot SX60 HS RRP: £298.99
DSLR cameras Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are the way to go If you are interested in getting serious about photography. Offering high resolution photographs and video recording with endless lens options, this really is the ideal choice if you want the best quality results. Nikon D7200 + 18-105mm Lens RRP: £888

Golf Data is known quite famously for its work within golf course construction… but your company has diversified quite a bitand a sector you are just as familiar with is domestic/ commercial landscaping and civils… The reality is that over the last few years there has been a fairly even split across civils & earth moving, landscape construction, Golf course construction & renovation, and landscape & course maintenance as business divisions. Of course our design division works across all of these. What would you describe as your company’s design aesthetic- and how do you embed sustainability into your ethics? I would say that our design aesthetic is “inspired by nature”. Whilst we have successfully done formal landscapes of varying styles, I think our preference and where we have built some niche expertise is in creating landscapes that feel as if they were “meant to be there”. If this is done correctly, then sustainability is already embedded into the project. If Golf Data had a moto, what would it be? “Putting People First” is our moto. Greener Intentions The Chiveve River Park project has the overall objective to increase the climate resilience of Beira in Mozambique. Intent of design by Earthworks landscape architects is to create a park that realises the values offered by a large public park to the city, which include climate change amelioration, education and recreation.

The objective of this project is realised through a series of actions related to the improvement of ecosystem functioning, improving use values, accessibility, permeability and sense of place. The creation of longitudinal movement systems and the articulation of the edge treatment are critical in landscape design and place-making, but the overall success of the design relies on people using and valuing the spaces created. In order to encourage people to inhabit and use the park and river system, passive and active recreational activities, art and activation nodes have been located along the river length. providing exciting programming for the park. Earthworks have been working on the project since 2014. Implementation is expected to begin in 2017. When the park is complete it will be one of the largest urban parks built in Africa, to date. Similar to many coastal cities, Beira was developed on the banks of estuaries. The Chiveve River was a tidal estuary stretching from the coast in Beira, up 5km through the city centre to Goto informal settlement where it originates at Goto wetland. The Park encompasses the whole river. The first stage of this project, which is now complete, was to open the river mouth, and dredge the river, allowing tidal flow back into the system and to provide increased flood protection to the City of Biera, which is vulnerable to flooding and sea level fluctuations due to the city being below sea level. The second stage of the project is to turn the project area into an urban park.

The Brief
The client wanted to extend his living and usable space to the outdoors with a tropical/ resort like feel. The property was to be rented out to short term occupants that would pay a premium rate to enjoy the views of Camps bay and the 12 Apostles mountain range. The steep slope of the site was excavated and shaped to form a flat lawn that cuts back into a retaining wall and surrounds the lawn with tropical lush greenery. This aspect provides privacy from the neighbours and a backdrop to the garden that will mature into a dense tropical forest feel. One of the larger rocks was kept on site to be integrated into the retaining wall and also creates the backbone of a natural water feature. Steps that lead from the lawn area to the top of the retaining wall will take you to a formal seating area with a wooden pergola structure. The seating area was placed in the south eastern corner of the property to align with the linear shape that leads from the pool area to the back garden. esigned by Patricia Fox, of UK-based Aralia Garden Design, this stunning 10m x 20m plot was presented as an extension to the working office that could make excellent use of often neglected rooftop space. The garden was created to inspire people to make better use of unused commercial space by demonstrating that office rooftops can be used as viable garden or work spaces amid overcrowded cities. Patricia’s aim was to create a practical, yet stimulating work environment that combined the requirements of an office within a relaxed and creative outdoor setting. The space is both practical and beautiful, offering an innovative, thought-provoking environment with ambient space for collaboration and inspiration. There are work spaces for individual staff members as well as collaborative group ‘breakout’ areas. The garden is designed to capture and enhance the networked world we live in, being flexible and innovative. This is highlighted through the use of technology such as wi-fi, TV screens, laptops and tablets, which can be utilised throughout the garden. Sustainable features and recycled elements have also been used in the garden wherever possible. The design, entitled Rooftop Workplace of Tomorrow, was awarded a prestigious RHS Silver medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and, as part of the technology already highlighted, an LED sports screen emitted calming and relaxing sounds and visuals as visitors enjoyed the scene, uniting cutting-edge technology and tranquility in one picturesque package. As well as 21st century technology, Patricia also selected a number of innovative materials, including bamboo decking made from fast-growing bamboo. All tabletops were built using Richlite, a compound material manufactured from compressed recycled paper. Furniture and planters in the garden were manufactured from ‘up-cycled’ materials – Grade A plastics (including black plastic plant pots) which previously went into landfill and which Aralia commissioned from UK-based company Thomas Bramwell Outdoor Living. Quirky, ‘C-shaped’ chairs were commissioned to hang from the bespoke wood and metal pergola frame and functionality is key to this garden, which doesn’t stop with the

Calm and understated planting was used to create a textural, structured, yet beautifully delicate space. The colour scheme is a mix of green and silver-blue foliage, with simple white flowering plants such as Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium), Rocket Candytuft (Iberis Amara) and White Campion (Silene Latifolia). The main focal plant was a stunning Pleached Field Maple (Acer Campestre) to give some stature to the garden. A West Himalayan Birch (Betula Pendula) was selected for its ashy bark, which complemented the white flora throughout the garden. A Norway Maple (Acer Globosum) was included to provide a natural ‘umbrella’ for the floating workstation and render subtle shade under which staff would be able to relax with a laptop or tablet. Buxus cubes, Thymus balls and Buxus hedging provided the necessary structure to the garden, mimicking the ‘rounded square’ tablet-inspired shape used consistently throughout the garden’s design. Most recently these jars proved the main attraction at the 300th anniversary commemoration of renowned British landscape architect Lancelot “Capability” Brown, when Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park in England hosted a light art commission using 1 000 Consol Solar Jars™ as one of its key set pieces. Brown was celebrated at this event which ran from October 29th to November 13th, for shaping the vision of the picture-perfect English countryside. Visual artist Laurent from Creatmosphere, a cross-genre studio specialising in the relationship of light as art between architecture and space, was commissioned to create a light spectacular. He filled an entire field with pinpoints of light to map the rich and diverse history of green spaces. Using revolutionary technology, the interactive light commission entitled “In Light: Illuminating Capability Brown’s Landscape” was a great success. There was an interactive element that gave the visitors an opportunity to take over the light controls and light up various parts of the house and trees in exciting ways. This was the first time globally, that wireless DMX technology was used to activate so many solar powered lanterns in an art exhibition of this magnitude. This technological challenge was of course made easier in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg and their fantastic research facility RC (Resolution Circle). He adds: “Natural swimming ponds are designed to maintain this low-nutrient state, and under these conditions, the water is ‘self-cleaning’. Phytoplankton and bacteria are consumed and kept in control by other microscopic organisms. There are different ways of achieving this by using plants or materials which take nutrients out of the water, or with aggregates, certain types of gravel or other small-grained materials which grow a biofilm as water passes through it, thereby extracting nutrients from the main body of water.” Natural pools are divided into two areas, separated by submerged walls with a swimming
zone and a regeneration zone filled with aquatic plants that absorb nutrients and oxygenate the water. A special seedbed filters the water which is then circulated by a pump; the pool is also inoculated with microorganisms that help eliminate algae. Some companies focus on ‘swimming ponds’ which look like ponds and others on ‘natural pools’ which more so resemble pools. ‘Living pools’ have no plants at all. Pure living pools need less work but have higher running costs. The filtration is a phosphate absorber, a living biological filter which breaks down waste without adding anything. This filter needs back flushing and stirring occasionally to maintain even flow, and it will need replacing when saturated, usually every two to three years. A robot cleans the surfaces on a weekly cycle and can even be left in the

pool. Pool steps, awkward corners and slopes or sides may need brushing to prevent them getting too slippery or discoloured by biofilm. The biological pool filtration can be switched off www.prolandscaper.co.za
INSPIRE PORTFOLIO NATURAL WATER FEELS MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE ON THE SKIN AND IS NOT AS HARSH AS CHEMICAL WATER in winter but leaving the skimmer pump on keeps leaves clear. Existing pools can be converted to natural ones, usually with a small amount of reshaping and the addition of a planted filtration zone, says Lloyd-Morgan: “The minimum size I recommend is a 70m2 water surface area with one area of the swimming zone being at least 2m deep. A large deep body of water is more stable in terms of minimising temperature fluctuation and overheating, and is important for the health of the pool ecology. “One advantage to having large shallow planting beds is that they act as giant solar panels, which quickly heat the water to a comfortable swimming temperature so no additional heating is needed.” Evans confirms this: “We find that even in England swimming ponds do not need to be heated, and the water can get up to 25˚C in warm periods, and stay at 22-24˚C for long periods over the summer. However, it is certainly possible to heat them artificially – in general swimming ponds can be heated to 24˚C (although the sun will take them higher) and natural pools without plants to 28˚C with negligible running costs. Ponds can be heated up to 30°C if necessary, and using solar panels is an option. Natural water feels much more comfortable on the skin and is not as harsh as
www.prolandscaper.co.za
chemical water, so what might feel cold in chlorinated water, 22˚C for example, actually feels comfortable in natural water,” says Evans, recommending that you leave your pool unheated for the first year. Initial prices for natural swimming ponds and conventional pools are comparable as for maintenance, although natural pools are self-sustaining ecosystems requiring little maintenance. Plants will need thinning and some replanting just as other parts of the garden do. It’s recommended to have a maintenance service which takes two to four hours per month depending on the pond size and complexity, and an annual spring service is recommended with a major service every three to four years when the regeneration area is cleaned. If the nutrient levels are too high you can get blanket weed, but only evaporated water needs to be replaced which on hot days can be up to 1cm. Waterfalls, fountains and lighting can also be added to enrich the beauty of the ponds. Unlike traditional swimming pools they do not need to be covered over in winter, adding year round interest to your garden and attracting wildlife. But is there a downside? Lloyd-Morgan says: “This depends on your point of view. If you don’t like sharing your pool with frogs, newts and other water life, it’s probably not for you!”
