Well show season is well and truly in full swing, with RHS Shows at Cardiff, Malvern and Chelsea now over for another year, we still have Hampton Court and Tatton to look forward to, along with many other regional shows up and down the country. We couldn’t write this month without mentioning the huge success that is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. There was much debate around the new judging system and the appearance of new, young designers to Main Avenue. But it has to be said, the RHS have more or less produced perfection in 2014, the medal winners are all very worthy and it was great to see young designers stepping up to the big time. From our visits to the showground and TV coverage during build up, it seems that the mix of new and seasoned designers and landscapers has produced something new and exciting. See our photos of the gardens on pages 19-22. Everyone asked us which was our favourite garden and it is so difficult to choose, as each has special elements in its own right

and of course, Jim and I will always disagree! But what we do both agree on is that every year we become more and more impressed by the quality and invention plus the stories that lie behind each garden. From this, we decided to ask what you thought and sent out a short survey to find out the ‘Professional’s Choice’ so we’re looking forward to letting you know the results and if you have received the email and not yet participated, please do, even if it’s just for fun. See the survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/ chelseashowprofessionals. Many landscapers will barely have time to pack up their tools and they’ll be off to Hampton Court, Dave Green’s column has been so interesting over the past few months and now it’s getting closer there is more and more to be done – read more on page 8. NEWS SHED Gavin Jones Ltd completes acquisition of Norris & Gardiner
After several months of formalising a trading alliance, Gavin Jones Ltd has now completed the acquisition of the Norris & Gardiner brand. N&G will continue to trade independently under the direction of Richard Gardiner and his team, but as a wholly owned subsidiary of Gavin Jones Ltd – with the support of Simon Jacob and Will Clark from Gavin Jones Ltd as co-directors. Norris & Gardiner will continue to focus its efforts on local authority clients, where the brand’s particular reputation for quality service and expertise lies. Richard Gardiner says “as time went on it became more and more apparent that the future of Norris & Gardiner would be best placed as
part of the Gavin Jones organisation – avoiding duplication of fees for a variety of services and memberships and thus reducing overheads. Effectively this solution provides “business as usual” but with cost-saving benefits for clients and greater career development opportunities for staff – a true win-win situation for everyone”. Will Clark, MD of Gavin Jones Ltd, commented “This initiative has proven good for both businesses – the synergies between our organisations were simply too overwhelming to resist and the acquisition of the well-respected Norris & Gardiner brand has brought with it an increasing capability to offer the broad range of integrated horticultural services for which Gavin Jones has become renowned”. www.gavinjones.co.uk

Palmstead Soft Landscape Workshop – survey results In a survey of 100 professional landscape practitioners, landscape architects and garden designers, only 20 per cent surveyed said they provided annual maintenance costs alongside their designs and schemes. The survey was produced by Palmstead Nurseries to coincide with the announcement that this year’s Soft Landscape Workshop will tackle ‘Design for Maintenance’. 100 Landscape Architects and Garden Designers were asked to answer questions on the topic of maintenance costs. 88 per cent of those surveyed said that they felt it would be helpful, as an industry, to have a formula that helped provide an indication of annual costings for maintenance and over 80 per cent thought that it might raise the demand and status of skilled horticulturists. Of those who do provide costings, 41 per cent gave detailed costings while 43 per cent only provided an indication. Two thirds of those questioned said that the client did not ask for costings while the remaining third were either not confident or didn’t know how to produce annual
costings. The majority of those surveyed (84 per cent) believed that the client would benefit from knowing this information, but some were worried that providing costs would put the client off. Nick Coslett, Marketing Manager at Palmstead Nurseries says: “The survey indicates that there are more opportunities for us to focus on aftercare. Designers have the ear of the client at the point of making the investment in green infrastructure – and that investment is not just the capital investment there is a revenue element too.” Palmstead Nurseries Soft Landscape Workshop will be held on 17 September at the Ashford International Hotel, Kent. Cost £25 per delegate (to include lunch). Register at: www.palmstead.co.uk

Graduate Gardeners wins 5th Gold Medal and Best in Show at RHS Malvern
Graduate Gardeners has won a sixth Gold medal and the Best in Show Award at the Malvern Spring Festival. The Bringing Nature Home garden designed by Mark Draper was judged as almost faultless by the panel of RHS judges. This was a personal hat trick for Mark who has now won three Gold medals and three Best in Shows at the RHS Malvern Spring Show. The design was inspired by the profusion of wildflowers in the hedgerows of the country lanes, and linking these with a more contemporary formal garden, all in a 7m x 12m space. The planting was wildlife friendly and natural looking at the far end of the garden but more traditional in style nearer the house. www.graduategardeners.co.uk

New APL role for Phil Tremayne APL NATIONAL BUSINESS MANAGER Phil Tremayne has recently been given a new role within the Association of Professional Landscapers; he aims to offer support and bring more members together through the networking events that are so popular within the organisation. We spent a few moments with him, finding out what his new role involves and how he plans to help move the Association forward.
Phil, congratulations, what does your new role entail? The title of the new role is APL National Business Manager. My main aim is to provide a mechanism for the APL to reach more effectively around the UK and become a point of contact for all APL members, APL Associates, APL Affiliates and APL prospects to APL HQ. What are you hoping to achieve in your new role? One of the first aims will be to set up and help run more of the exceptional cluster meetings we have had around the country. These meetings are a great resource for members to network with likeminded professionals and affiliates, and they take a bit of setting up, but by the end of 2015 I hope to have a complete network around the country. So if anyone is keen to get a group set up please do contact me and I will help get it going. I also want the role to be a resource for members, enabling more effective contact with members, and ensuring they are getting the most from the association. I want them to have the feeling of belonging to something they can be proud to www.prolandscapermagazine.com

be a part of. Finally I want to develop recruitment, as with any association, the strength is in the numbers and we are always looking to help more potential members in the UK. What support will you be giving your members? For the first time, the APL will now have a dedicated field role. Which basically means I am there to help members wherever I can. This may simply be by answering a query, or directing the member to a suitable solution through one of our dedicated helplines, the APL member toolbox or one of our APL associates. Essentially I will be a conduit for members to use. What can we expect within the coming year? You can certainly expect to see a lot more of me around the country. The new role provides the APL with a resource that enables it to have a presence at a lot of the consumer shows around the UK, as well as the trade ones like FutureScape and Landscape Live. As previously mentioned there will hopefully be a
lot more cluster meetings, enabling me to meet a lot of the members, and as I will be doing the majority of business inspections I will also have the time to meet members on a one to one basis and make sure they are accessing all the relevant areas, but also bringing a greater continuity to an already very robust business inspection programme.
What is the best way for landscapers to contact you? Email is always good, I get a lot but I like emails. I know very strange! But phone if it is urgent or direct message via Twitter. phil.tremayne@the-hta.org.uk 07808 775 175 @apl_phil

Inspiring the Next Generation of Horticulturists CAREERS DAY AT BERKSHIRE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA) level 2 and 3 students in horticulture attended a careers day in May, ‘Inspiring the Next Generation of Horticulturists’, organised by Barrie Duesbury, Lecturer in Horticulture at the college. Level 2 and 3 Students listened to presentations from industry professionals including Franzi Cheeseman, Head Gardener of Stoke Poges Memorial Gardens; David Dunbar, Ornamental Landscape Garden Design and maintenance; and Reece Watson, Head Groundsman of Arsenal
Football Club. Shaw Pye from BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) explained a little about BALI and its members. Jill Coleby and Vanessa Faulkner from Coleby and Faulkner Garden Design and Planting, told the audience how they got involved in horticulture and garden design and maintenance. Then during the afternoon session, Jim Wilkinson
from Pro Landscaper magazine, Garden Centre Retail magazine and FutureScape and Landscape Live events, highlighted some of the prominent people within the industry today, such as Mark Gregory, Janine Pattison, Andrew Wilson, and Phil Jones who are each running very successful businesses within the sector and show that the industry can be very fruitful and rewarding to work in. There was also an interesting
insight into the work of a Head Groundsman for a large country estate, giving the students a taste of the varied and satisfying role of tending an estate year round. Phil Tremayne from the APL enlightened the students about the benefits of being a member of The APL (Association of Professional Landscapers) and its 200+ members and finally, Nick Coslett from Palmstead Nurseries shared his experiences of working for a plant nursery. There was also time for students to chat to the speakers afterwards, and take away literature to digest and discuss at future lessons.
ISS & Gardening Leave launch ‘Honesty’ Campaign AT OPENING OF HORTICULTURAL THERAPY GARDEN The newly refurbished Horticultural Therapy Garden at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea has been opened by the Gardening Leave charity and ISS Facilities Services Landscaping. It was also the launch of the ‘Honesty’ campaign, in which the charity aims to bring peoples’ attention to the mental health problems that some veterans suffer with the transition to civilian life.
The Honesty pledge asks us to show veterans that we are committed to helping them overcome the stigma by supporting them with an understanding attitude and open mind. The symbol of the campaign, Honesty, was chosen as because in the darkest months of the year, the seed heads of the 12

plant can catch the sun’s rays, offering light and hope. Heather Budge-Reid, Chief Executive of Gardening Leave explained how it can take 13 years for the life of an ex-armed forces person to fall apart and get back on track. She thanked ISS Facility Services Landscaping for their support of the charity and bringing it to the attention of the workforce. Phil Jones, Managing Director of ISS Facilities Services Landscaping thanked Gardening Leave for enabling ISS to support the campaign and his own staff for their dedication, and commented “over 60 per cent of ISS staff has already signed the Honesty pledge, it has heightened awareness amongst our workforce of the problems our Armed Forces veterans face.”
The garden was constructed by a team from ISS Facility Services Landscaping, and is a haven where veterans can spend time amongst the bespoke raised beds, designed specifically to make it easier for those who may have balance problems or may even be in a wheelchair. Mental health problems can cause the veterans to become withdrawn and by setting out the beds in rows with plenty of space between, gardeners have the choice to work by themselves or interact with others, helping draw them out of themselves and speak with therapists or other veterans. tree specimen, a hand-crafted planter or an innovative garden tool, so this year we are searching for a product to crown The SGD Product of the Year 2014. Juliet Sargeant, Chair of the SGD said: “We know that when the finest products are teamed with professional garden designers
beautiful gardens are created, so we have been calling for manufacturers or product suppliers to enter products they think should take the coveted title.” The entries are now in and displayed on The SGD Product of the Year website and we are asking SGD members to cast a vote for their favourite three products to help us determine the shortlist. All the shortlisted products will be displayed in London in September and garden designers will be asked to vote for their favourite product. Their votes will be

RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show From the 8-13 July the historic grounds of Hampton Court Palace will form the backdrop to the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, which celebrates the best in gardening through an eclectic mix of gardens, displays and shopping. As in previous years the show will be divided into three zones, Grow, Escape and Inspire, to help guide visitors around one of the largest flower
shows in the country. The Grow zone hosts a range of nursery displays and plant stalls within the Floral Marquee, Plant Village, and the Plant Heritage Marquee. The Escape Zone will play host to the RHS Britain in Bloom garden designed by Jon Wheatley (below) in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the UKs largest community gardening campaign. New to this zone, and in keeping with the RHS Britain in Bloom celebrations, is an innovative community feature where visitors can get ideas for their gardens and inspiration for making the most of small spaces.

Of particular interest to Pro Landscaper readers is the Inspire zone where horticultural creations push boundaries and champion innovation. Central to this zone are the Conceptual Gardens, these gardens break the boundaries of ‘conventional’ garden design. This year for the first time, designers were set a brief to design gardens themed around one of the seven deadly sins. Rachel Parker Soden is creating a garden with a theme of lust (right), exploring the relationship between our appreciation of the beauty of plants and the primary function of flowers, which is to propagate their own species. Nilufer Danis’s design for wrath has been inspired by the instability of an eruptive volcano. Marcus Green’s beautiful meadow planting has at its centre an artificial representation of the perfect lawn, depicting the sin of envy, while Sarah Jane Rothwell and Joan Ma Roig’s greed design

depicts a confessionary and invites the viewer to consider the duality between judge and sinner. Katerina Rafaj’s gluttony garden focuses on the sin of food waste in a world where millions of people are starving. Sheena Seeks is creating a sloth-inspired design centred on the idea that as individuals we start out in life as equals yet some slide down the slippery slope into sloth and end up in the graveyard of lost dreams and ambitions. Finally Amanda Miller is creating a garden that depicts pride; the design represents a journey from the constraints of old-fashioned beliefs and people blinded by pride to a life of freedom. VIEW FROM THE TOP Although sceptical of market research, Phil Jones did discover some interesting information about the landscaping industry…

to achieve that change. In other words, leading us where they want us to go. In part, it may be correct to think we could be more proactive. So, what was the real outcome of the market research exercise? Well, I am now even more convinced that market research is rubbish. As I read recently, “It doesn’t even fulfil a useful sociological function in keeping people off the streets, because they’re all out there harassing the innocent public”. Do we really want market research companies to have a say in the future of our industry, or any industry? Market research may have established the most popular colour of a Smartie, but I don’t believe it ever has or ever will lead the landscape industry down the right paths. It has to be better to use our own experience and our existing relationships with our customers and markets to base our future strategies on. You, of course, may have a different view. ABOUT PHIL JONES Phil Jones is Managing Director of ISS Facility Services Landscaping and is based at the company’s head office in Woking, Surrey. He gained an HND in landscape construction and moved into grounds maintenance early on in his career, further gaining an MBA. He has been with the company since 1987 and as well as running the landscaping business he also sits on the UK operational management board of ISS Facility Services. Timescales are becoming tighter says Angus Lindsay, with sometimes just three weeks between the awarding of a contract and a start date, meaning we’re less prepared – sometimes without the correct machinery to do the job
We’ve all seen those last minute deals and taken advantage of them. When we forget an important event, there’s always something on the internet to help us out. It seems society is becoming increasingly reliant on somebody else sorting things out, we tap away on keyboards or screens and then – click – the problem’s gone. Take manufacturing as an example. You can have whatever you want as long as you get your order placed, then sit back and count the weeks (or months) until delivery. With many major manufacturers employing a “just-in-time” process Don’t we all have a shed full of equipment ready to deploy? where machines are built to order, individual components arrive on the production line as the needs a 24 speed transmission, or the park of the start date to facilitate a smooth handover. machine slowly turns from raw metal and a bench needs to be a bespoke curved In recent experience this has been as little as myriad of other parts into a complete working construction in stainless steel and oak? Why is it then that timescales from comfortable in the ‘lastminute.com’ wait. That’s fine if you have the time or are able to award to start date for today’s contracts are environment. However, it seems to me that plan ahead, but unfortunately in today’s world, getting tighter and tighter? Where equipment can’t be secured in time, the only alternatives are hiring or using older equipment as a stop-gap. That’s not a great start for either side, and transferring staff often look forward to being issued with new equipment. It used to be the case that contracts were awarded up to three months in advance
As an agriculturist, Angus spent several years working on arable farms in Scotland before joining VSO in Egypt, implementing a mechanisation programme, managing field operations for a commercial cotton plantation in Nigeria and as a contract instructor for Massey Ferguson in Yemen. During this time he also spent a year at Silsoe, gaining an MSc in Agricultural Engineering and Mechanisation Management. Returning to the UK he joined Glendale as machinery manager in 1994 – going on to become Company Engineer – before joining The Landscape Group in 2009 as Group Head of Assets and Fleet. Contact:

In an effort to dig deeper the interviewer said “well, what are we talking about...£300 or maybe £500 pounds?!!!” To the sound of my jaw hitting the floor I realised that I had possibly wasted half an hour of my life. This wasn’t an interview for some local rag but for a major national newspaper. In the discussion the journalist had been referencing products online, any one of which must have been in this region of cost. How does this compute? What does £300 buy you these days? When an Eton educated client tells us that he can’t understand why his 2.5 acre garden costs more than his small central London garden (approx 6m x 12m) why am I struggling to explain the most basic of maths? – simply put, 2.5 acres is quite big! To put the icing on the cake we’ve just had a developer we are working with tell us that we need to part build the house and garden so that we can then see where we are and what the site looks like. Sounds to me like a money wasting exercise – excuse me but what did I spend five years of my life training to do – perhaps to design and visualise for a client what the space might look like? Just when I feel like chucking in the towel I have my first day on the show ground at Chelsea with Gavin and suddenly I remember what it’s all about. It’s just a show, but my God, I think to myself, let’s make something memorable and get back to a bit of passion! (P.S. I didn’t really feel like chucking in the towel!) The costs of preliminaries Landscape cost consultancy from Sam Hassall
Preliminaries are the hidden costs of running a project being either large or small. In some domestic cases the preliminaries are ‘hidden’ within the mark-up and overhead. I prefer to show the preliminaries as a separate item on my bill or tender. On domestic projects when your prospective client is comparing yours to your competitors’ quote he may say to you that your competitor hasn’t allowed preliminaries, so why have you? The truth is he probably has somewhere but may not be showing them. Your preliminary costs can and should be built into every job if you want to ensure your profit. Once you have built these in you as the contractor know what
the job is going to cost you to do, and you can be confident that your submitted price is risk reduced and that your margins are far more competitive. Below is a checklist of some of the preliminary items which contribute to the job cost:
LiberRATE Estimating software downloadable from the author’s website on a 90 day trail will calculate the time on site and a lot of the costs included in the item build-ups automatically. The preliminaries are the additional items which you as an experienced landscape contractor realise you need to add in to insure your profit

PROJECT MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES Part 2
Last time we looked at tools and ideas to plan and prepare for a project. This month Margaret McNeil explains the actions you can take to help the project run smoothly
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail A project is considered a failure when it has not delivered what was required, in line with expectations. So, a project must deliver: ● to cost ● to quality ● on time ● the benefits described at the outset Reasons for failure could be: ● The delivered project meets targets, but turns out to be not what the client really wanted ● It was impossible to meet the project deliverables from the outset – the project was badly planned ● Management is poor ● Implementation is poor ● Focus on the benefits is lost ● The environment changes
You can avoid failure by constant monitoring, review and communication, so that changes can be made as soon as problems arise. In many cases, projects are planned before a project manager is assigned. If you’re the incoming project manager, make sure you don’t simply accept these documents as they are! You’re responsible for delivering the project, so be sure to review what has been promised. Validate assumptions, and identify any 32

gaps or areas that need more detail. If difficult conversations are needed, have them now. Once deadlines, requirements, and budgets are set, expectations are much more difficult to change. Being competent is not enough for success in managing a project – there are so many factors that are beyond your control – so constant monitoring is vital. You will not get away with saying “I didn’t realise that had happened”, as it is your job to know everything that happens. Ensuring that you make contact with the site daily is a start. If you can personally visit, that’s better. Ask questions of the designated supervisor on-site if you can’t be there. Ask searching questions rather than simple ones “Has everything been completed as planned?” should be followed with “so, the area behind building 1 has been fully laid to slabs? Any problems along the way? Was there enough sand? Anyone not pulling their weight? So it’s completely finished and you are
ready to move to building 2 tomorrow? Did the slabs arrive ready for building 2 tomorrow?” and so on. These probing questions are almost the best measure of finding out how things are going when you can’t get there yourself. Better still would be a photo – ask the supervisor to send a photo of the work for the project file and you can rest easy. The project has been designed according to the client’s wishes. Along the way, the client may realise that what they have asked for is not quite turning out how they expected, or actually they made a wrong decision. Great customer service is finding this out and doing something to remedy it. At the end of the project, if you delivered everything exactly as planned you might congratulate yourself, but if the customer isn’t delighted, the project has failed (even though it’s the customer’s error). They may have decided the size of a patio, and you, on seeing the ground prepared, may have realised it might be too small and that they may regret not adding a few feet extra. This should be brought to their attention – you are the expert. The client will thank you upon completion, and consider it great service. If the project is clearly not going to be able to deliver either to plan, or any revised requirements, don’t ignore this. The sooner you communicate this, and the sooner you make a decision about the project’s future, the better. Clients just love being kept informed! Hopefully you will see that constant questioning, monitoring and review are fundamental to success. It’s a relentless job, but better than looking foolish when asked “so, exactly where are we with Project A?” ABOUT MARGARET MCNEIL Margaret McNeil runs BALI Award winner OnSite Training UK. BUSINESS TIPS
Beware benzo-a-pyrene! The name benzo-a-pyrene, or ‘BaP’ for short, causes panic amongst those who know what it is, and more importantly, what problems it can create when it is found in topsoil. Tim O’Hare explains
What is benzo-a-pyrene?
Why is it a problem for landscaping?
BaP is one of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are routinely tested for in the construction industry. BaP is considered to have carcinogenic properties, and hence its presence in soil is becoming restricted.
Increasingly, the landscape contractor, as opposed to the groundworks contractor, is being appointed to supply the topsoil for the landscape scheme. In doing so, he is responsible for ensuring the topsoil is horticulturally sound, but also that it is compliant with the remediation strategy. However, at the time of tendering and even during the importation process, the developer does not necessarily make the landscape contractor aware of all these requirements. Furthermore, many laboratories do not advise testing for BaP when a ‘BS test’ is requested. The problem arises when the imported topsoil is tested for contaminants by the developer, often after the scheme is all planted up, and elevated levels of BaP are discovered. Very often the only resolution is to remove and replace all the topsoil, and possibly the plants, at the cost of the landscape contractor. I can think of at least four larger landscape projects in the last 12 months where this has happened to landscape contractors.
Where does it come from? PAHs are one of the most widespread organic pollutants occurring in fossil fuels (oil, coal, and tar). They are also formed by incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels such as wood, charcoal, coal, diesel and fat.
Current regulations Most construction projects these days undergo some element of site investigation and ground contamination assessment. This is often required to meet planning conditions relating to human health, and to satisfy the likes of the NHBC. The developer is required to either demonstrate that the site is ‘clean’, or, if contamination is found (most development sites find some contamination), a suitable remediation strategy is put in place to deal with the contamination. In most cases, this remediation includes using topsoil (and sometimes subsoil) as a clean surface layer to isolate any contamination deeper down (called a Clean Cover System) in soft landscape areas (e.g. back and front gardens, public open space, sports pitches). For this topsoil to be suitable, it must not contain elevated levels of various contaminants, including PAHs and BaP. BaP is particularly relevant in these circumstances as the maximum limit generally set in residential end-uses is particularly low (typically just below 1.0 mg/kg). 34
Pro Landscaper / June 2014
Tim O'Hare new.indd 34
Sourcing good topsoil The problem arises when inferior quality topsoil is sourced. Screened ‘muckaway’ or skip waste soils carry the greatest risk as they often contain fragments of tarmac and clinker, which contain PAHs. However, some natural topsoils can also contain elevated levels of BaP, for example, topsoil derived from urban parks and gardens where there has been decades of airborne pollution. Just because a topsoil looks like topsoil, it doesn’t mean it’s free of BaP. Manufactured topsoils that use clean sands and composts, or soils derived from agricultural land carry the lowest risk. However, it is advisable to get up-to-date analysis (less than three
REMEDIATION INCLUDES USING TOPSOIL AS A CLEAN SURFACE LAYER TO ISOLATE ANY CONTAMINATION DEEPER DOWN months old) from the topsoil supplier, and carry out your own tests if necessary. Further info about the topsoil industry can be found at www. timohare-associates.com/publications.php
The grey area of the British Standard Topsoil or subsoil meeting the British Standard should give some protection against falling foul of BaP. However, the requirements for contamination testing in both BS documents is not clear and most soil testing laboratories do not automatically test for these contaminants or advise the customer that it is a requirement. Table 1 in BS3882:2007 (topsoil) includes a section referenced “Chemical Contaminants (Human health and the environment) (See Notes 2 and 3). In BS8601:2013 (subsoil), Section 4, Notes 2 and 3 covers potential contaminants for human health and the environment. These clauses relate to PAHs and BaP. Surveying Janine Pattison examines the details of a site analysis, including recording a north point, accurately sampling the soil, and making notes on shade, sun, and wind over the whole garden
Once you have finished measuring up the garden and taking your photographs then it is time to gather the additional information that will prove vital during the design process. Make sure that you establish and record the north point. You can use a compass or an App on your phone. Mark up your sketch plan clearly. I like to check the reading a couple of times from different parts of the garden to be sure that I have recorded it accurately. Silly things like a metal garden table can interfere with the readings without you realising. I like to take a soil sample from the garden and test it later to check for a basic pH reading. This will be very helpful later in the project when working on the planting plans. A spoonful of soil from several places in the garden mixed together will give an approximate reading. If you have any concerns about extreme soil conditions or possible contamination then samples can be sent away for laboratory analysis. While you are gathering the soil samples you can investigate the soil texture. Knowing whether the soil is sandy, silty or clay will not only have an impact on the planting but also the construction of the new garden. Sandy soils might need extra foundations but will drain well, while heavy clay
will be difficult in both wet and dry weather – either sticky mud or baked hard. Assess the garden for areas of dry shade – these areas are often under trees or near walls, or particularly wet areas. These may be naturally reliably damp areas or evidence of a collapsed drain which needs further investigation.
KNOWING WHETHER THE SOIL IS SANDY, SILTY OR CLAY WILL NOT ONLY HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE PLANTING BUT ALSO THE CONSTRUCTION Try and assess where the prevailing wind comes from and if there are any wind tunnel areas which affect the garden. Gaps between buildings can funnel the wind making it very difficult to get anything to grow there, as well as making areas unsuitable for seating or dining. Make sure you have studied any features outside the garden which are likely to impact the design process. A tree in a neighbour’s garden may not show up on your survey but could have a significant impact on your design. If it is to the south or west it is likely to cast shade over the
garden. Ugly views may need to be carefully screened by careful placing of new shrubs, trees or trellis and creating privacy for your client is likely to be a priority. Spend time working out where the sun is in the garden at different times of the day but remember that this will change during the year too. Winter sun is much lower in the sky and the shadows are longer. In the summer the sun is higher in the sky and the shadows are darker. The final thing I like to do before I get back in the car is to have a quick nosey over the fence to see what sort of plants are growing well in the neighbours’ gardens. This can be very revealing about local conditions and some species act as valuable ‘indicators’. Healthy-looking azaleas and rhododendrons are indicative of acidic soil conditions. You are now ready to draw up the survey. Once you have taken the design brief from the client you can start work on the design. Biodiversity offsetting Opportunity or threat to your livelihood – James Hewetson-Brown explains the facts
There has been much talk of biodiversity offsetting in recent months; within the landscape industry we are still working out how this might affect our businesses as policy is developed. It is important that you stay on top of the facts and start to look for ways in which you can play a pivotal role between developers and ecologists. With increased knowledge of creating biodiverse landscapes, there are opportunities ahead for the trade. Offsetting is a system that hopes to prevent biodiversity loss by recognising and quantifying the environmental impact of development. Ecologists determine the amount, type and quality of habitat that is likely to be affected by a proposed development project. Developers are required to commit to maintain or improve the current level of on-site biodiversity. Where this is not achievable, they must pledge to offset the developed land with ‘like for like’ or ‘like for better’ by purchasing conservation credits from a ‘receptor site’ where a suitably biodiverse habitat is created. Receptor sites are areas of land put forward by companies or individuals looking to receive payment in return for creating or restoring bio diverse habitats. Placing financial value on biodiversity has created a marketplace for retaining and restoring habitats. Any landowner can propose an offsetting receptor site, there is www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Wildflower Turf new.indd 39
no particular size or type of current land-use stipulated. Pilot projects however, have shown that the most frequently interested landowners are farmers or conservation trusts, with land usually within rural landscapes. We may assume that creation and maintenance are more likely to be carried out by farm workers or volunteers. The fear for landscapers is that developers then
WITH INCREASED KNOWLEDGE OF CREATING BIODIVERSE LANDSCAPES, THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD FOR THE TRADE
bypass responsibility for good sustainable landscape design on-site. Having paid for credits off-site the developer may feel that they do not need to invest further money into a bio diverse scheme on site. In order to turn this situation around, landscapers need to be providing cost effective, bio diverse solutions to developers to encourage more on-site landscaping. The Code for Sustainable Homes being consolidated within Building Regulations means that planners will want to see development sites that promote
high levels of sustainability both within the building and the surrounding landscape. Green roofs have been an obvious choice for on-site mitigation of biodiversity loss but there are plenty of other options that can be considered. Being able to provide a landscape design that has strong elements of sustainability using wildflower areas and species rich turf within verges, banks and communal areas offers key ingredients for planning approval. If biodiversity loss is too great and an offset is required, more of a case should be made for keeping ‘receptor sites’ closer to the development. ‘Additionality’ is the term used to describe the increase in biodiversity from the baseline that already exists on the receptor site. This can be difficult to achieve in an already rich biodiverse rural area. It is my view that we should look more towards urban sites where the biodiversity baseline is much lower. There are many brownfield sites that seemingly could benefit from an introduction of funds to increase biodiversity. Roundabouts, parks, common land around highways, schools and colleges are generally areas of low biodiversity but forming large green corridors with huge potential for high quality habitat creation (and low maintenance costs). Perhaps it is time to put pressure on these different landowners and create some fantastic urban biodiverse designs and use biodiversity offsetting to leverage a range of new projects for landscapers to become involved in. The interest, demand and regulatory requirement for biodiverse and species rich environments is definitely here to stay; speak to ecologists, speak to developers and become the facilitator of rich, biodiverse projects in your local area. ABOUT JAMES HEWETSON-BROWN Wildflower Turf Ltd was founded in 2003 by James Hewetson-Brown. With 20 years expertise in the lawn turf market, he wanted to find a solution to the problems faced when growing a meadow from seed. He went on to create the UK’s first, soil-less growing system for wildflowers and grasses to meet the demand for superior quality, ready-made wildflower meadows without the establishment problems associated with traditional seeding methods. Wildflower Turf Ltd continues to add innovative products to their wildflower range, whilst also providing landscapers with outstanding training opportunities in biodiverse landscapes.

INTERVIEW
Let’s Hear it From
PHIL MULLIGAN This month, Pro Landscaper was interested to hear about the work of the Landscape Institute under its new CEO Phil Mulligan. He talks about his aims to bring the industry closer together Do you have a background in architecture or landscape architecture? No. I am a charity Chief Executive with an environmental background and experience of running membership organisations. My job is to run the organisation effectively and make sure all of our members are being served as well as they can be. Landscape architects are generally out doing landscape architecture, so I think it is useful to have someone who can offer a slightly different perspective as well as a challenge. I bring with me a background that is different from the membership which I think is positive. Do you think the association needed someone who understood how to run a charity or an association? I think you have to have sympathy with what we are doing in terms of landscape and environmental issues and I have clearly got that. Then you need someone who understands the charity and voluntary sector and I think more importantly, it’s about membership organisations and volunteers because any organisation like this – a membership organisation – is effectively a volunteer-led organisation.
landscape architecture at a younger age, I would probably have gone into it. I was considering architecture when I was 17 or 18. I feel that I have found a home. Landscape architects have a huge role in creating the spaces that people feel safe and healthy in, and spaces that bring people together.
What did you know about landscape architecture and the Landscape Institute? It’s funny because at the moment, one of our big questions is how to get young people into landscape architecture. I realised that had someone spoken to me about landscape and
What did your employer tell you were the goals that you needed to achieve? The board appointed an interim chief executive, which is the position that I got, but at the same time they were looking for a permanent chief executive so I also applied for that. I went

through two rigorous processes. The organisation was run very well by Alastair McCapra over a five year period. I was given a fairly broad brief really. There are some very interesting things happening. We have been awarded a development grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to set up the Capability Brown Festival which will celebrate the life and work of the father of landscape architecture. We are also running a number of initiatives on public health, housing and liveability. Our understanding is that the Landscape Institute is a Royal Chartered Body, so by becoming a landscape architect, do people Pro Landscaper / June 2014 41

INTERVIEW Are there any qualifications that a person needs in order to become a landscape architect? To start the process to become chartered, you have to have gained an accredited or related degree or qualification. But we are also now looking at routes into chartership that come from experienced practitioners. We have recently changed our syllabus so that it is now about people reflecting on their own practice and what they do and how that may differ from other people’s practices as opposed to them having practiced in a certain way. We now increasingly recognise experience.
I THINK IT IS USEFUL TO HAVE SOMEONE WHO CAN OFFER A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE
automatically become a member of the Institute? To say that you are a chartered member of the Landscape Institute is a sign of quality, credibility and professionalism. We get people coming from landscape architecture courses, either undergraduate, conversion from another discipline or post graduate. Having been a student member, they become a licentiate member during which period they will go through the process of becoming chartered. It normally takes a couple of years for someone to build up enough professional experience and knowledge to achieve the status of becoming chartered; then they have to pass an exam. Who provides that exam? Each person going through the chartership process will have a mentor and supervisors. They take the exam and we are training and ensuring quality at every stage of that process. Not everyone who takes the exam passes it. We need to make sure the profession has well-trained people in it, and our reputation and the reputation of landscape architects is strong. Do student members join for free? It’s a basic fee for students of £25. Do people then pay to become chartered? Yes that’s right. There are different types of membership and there are different rates. There 42

Let's Hear it From.indd 42
is an annual subscription fee for chartered members and we also require members to do 25 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) a year as well. How does the Institute get its message out to the local authorities and property developers about the difference between a landscape architect and a chartered landscape architect? We publish a register of our members, which shows their qualifications. We also keep an online register of registered practices. This lists areas of speciality. This is complemented by our Client’s Guide and the Advice for Clients section on our website. What are the membership numbers at the moment and what do you think is the optimum membership number? It’s around 6,000. Not everyone who trains as a landscape architect becomes a landscape architect; some people go off and do other things. If we are only ever training the same number of people as there are jobs, it means that every person who has been through the training is going to get a job. We can still grow. That expansion will come through us being attractive to people who are interested not just in design but also management and research.
Do you offer business tips to your members? I don’t think we offer enough business support to our members. We do offer the CPD support as well as the local branches so people can network. We have 12 regions so people can come together there and at national events as well. We offer promotion of the profession, so we are out there on behalf of our members trying to explain to people what landscape architecture is, and the importance of landscape architects. I think we did have a problem with what the public understands of landscape architecture. How many full time staff members does the Institute have? We have a remarkably small team given what we achieve. There are 15 members of staff. We also have some policy consultants and all of our volunteers in the local branches putting on events and activities and running training in a voluntary capacity. Are there Chairs for the areas? We are a membership organisation and the members are the experts, so a lot of what we deliver is through the membership. We have three standing committees, one for education and membership, one for technical and professional and another for policy and communications. Each of those committees has expert members delivering a lot of what we do. For example, something like the Public Health and Landscape publication that we have just produced was driven through one of our committees and a working group. One of the reasons that we have done this is not just because there is a health crisis in this country such as obesity, but because there is a new responsibility for local authorities to be in charge of public health, so the publication is for guidance and to get our www.prolandscapermagazine.com

INTERVIEW flooding, and there is no one profession that could sort that out; we all have to work together. I think Sue Illman has done a fantastic job building our relationships with related bodies but we still have more to do. We are a small body compared to many others and we are still misunderstood so there is a lot more to be done. It is absolutely vital, the more we work with others, the more work there will be for us.
members more work. We will now provide this to our members so they can go to their potential clients and show them the benefits of investing in landscape. We also take it to all the health boards and health bodies to try and get policy support for investing in landscape. The Institute has Noel Farrer coming in as the President in September. Noel will bring a lot of energy to the table. How do you feel about this? I’m really looking forward to working with Noel. He is a great advocate and a superb person to come in as president. Sue Illman has done an amazing job. I’ve come in at a time when water problems have been out there in the public domain – that just happens to be Sue’s specialism and she has really done a super job. She has really raised our profile. Noel is a specialist in housing, play and regeneration – which will be themes during his presidency. He is someone who can bring all parts of the membership together. He is a very charismatic, knowledgeable, successful landscape architect.
AT THE MOMENT, ONE OF OUR BIG QUESTIONS IS HOW TO GET YOUNG PEOPLE INTO LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
Is the presidency a two year term? It’s actually four years because you serve a year as president elect where you learn the ropes, then two years as president, and finally one year as a past president. What is your daily routine? I do something different every day; there is so much to do. I think part of being a Chief Executive is being out there promoting and representing the professionalism of the members so there are lots of external meetings to go to with related professions, people in government and people in business, and getting issues like water on the agenda. Then looking towards the membership and running the business, which involves making sure all of the staff are performing, finances are in order and our commercial activities are going well. How much of the Institute’s funding is from the membership and how much is from commercial activities? A huge amount of the funding comes through the membership subscriptions, members buying publications or coming to training events and the registered practices scheme, so that is an important part of our income. We also have a website for landscape architecture jobs. We have the awards which carry sponsorship and funding from projects. It is a real blend which is what you would want. I think we are heavily skewed towards the membership and we have to be sensitive to that. We have introduced a 1.5 per cent increase in our membership fees this year; whereas we didn’t have any increase at all last year because it was a particularly difficult year. What is your relationship with the other associations in the landscape world? How do you see yourselves working with them? We need to work together. You look at water and
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Let's Hear it From.indd 43
If we were doing this interview in two years’ time, what would you like to look back on and say that you have done well? We would be looking at what is happening in public health, housing and water because they are the things we are going to focus on for the next two years. We need to build on the great legacy of the Olympics – that did an amazing amount for landscaping and landscape architecture. I would love the situation with the universities to be healthier in two years’ time too. I want a broader range of members coming into the Institute and I want different ways for potential members to come in. I want us to be bigger, more diverse and to have a better profile and I would certainly like to see the government thinking more at a landscape level for a whole range of issues including climate, health and community. When you get the time, what do you like to do outside of work? I was lucky enough to spend two and a half years cycling around the world when I was younger just with my bike and a tent actually volunteering in national parks and doing conservation work. As part of that I got to work on the Rainbow Warrior for Greenpeace which was a dream come true. In my personal life I love growing fruit and veg in my big garden and I also enjoy running.

e were approached in April 2013 to lay paving in the back garden of a flat in Mayfair that had recently had a basement built under the garden. The whole flat was being refurbished by the firm Aspire, who commissioned us to do the work. The client wanted the work completed as soon as possible. The place was a building site when we first saw it and started work. Due to where the site was we couldn’t leave materials on the road and the only access was through the flat. All materials had to be brought through the house in small bags. The client had chosen Marshalls Fairstone King Size Golden Sand Multi Sawn Sandstone 750 x 750mm. We also had to use 750 x 1250mm slabs in certain areas to avoid small cuts. Carrying such ABOUT OAKLEY LANDSCAPES Oakley Landscapes has been designing and building gardens for 15 years. large heavy slabs and materials through a nearly finished flat meant we had to take great care not to damage anything. We laid the paving on Wallbarn’s adjustable legs. Access under the paving was a priority in case the roof needed servicing. To keep the same look we also laid the paving in the courtyards below on the adjustable legs. Each 750 x 750mm slab had nine adjustable legs underneath to hold it up. The roof surface was very uneven and so we had to make sure that the fall of water was correct we had to use different size adjustable legs.

Issues to address The garden had had a basement built under it; we were laying on top of the new basement. There were issues with the drainage and the levels of the roof were all over the place. The adjustable legs had to be different sizes in width as well as adjustable in height because there were so many obstacles to go around. We had to cut a perfect square hole with precise measurements then had to lift the large flagstones over the balustrade posts which were chemically fixed in and couldn’t be adjusted or tampered with as the roof had already been sealed watertight. The railings had already been installed before we started work. We had to work out the design of the layout of the slabs to make sure that we could avoid cuts where possible, and to take into account the metal frames to hold the wooden arches. As no permanent fixings could be fixed to the roof, the wooden arches had to be fitted to a metal box frame under the paving. This meant we had to make adjustments and we had to bridge over the metal frames. Our plasterer had to put on a Stucco render on the walls to match the surrounding London buildings. Wooden batons were fitted to the walls. The render was put on and once the render was hard the batons were removed. This was a busy site as all trades had to work around each other and there was immense pressure to get the work finished to a very tight deadline.

esigners Deakinlock were first contacted by the client in August 2010, to redesign the gardens around an imposing Gothic Victorian rectory. The project was to include gardens, park and grazed paddocks. An initial project to the south east of the house was designed by Deakinlock and was implemented by Stewart Landscape Construction. Designs for the rear garden were then submitted, and construction began on a scheme by Thomas Hoblyn. Deakinlock were then engaged to redesign the approach to the house through the park, and the area immediately in front of the house. Stewart Landscape Construction remained the principle contractor across the multiple projects.
The brief The existing drive was lined with Aesculus hippocastanum which was suffering badly from leaf miner; it was agreed that these should be replaced, but saved if possible. The client also wanted the drive to be
widened. An existing semi-mature hornbeam hedge would be saved, and the secondary service drive running across of the front of the property would be rerouted. The drive area in front of the house was minimal, and would need to be increased, but the clients did not want it to become a car park and spoil the views across the park. The clients were also keen to create a simple, contemporary garden, whilst remaining conscious of the architecture of the building. More grandeur was required on the approach to the house, currently screened by large shrubberies. An existing Yorkstone path along the front of the house was to remain.

Design The main design consideration was to create a grander approach to the house. The designers were constrained however by the recently implemented scheme to the south east of the house, and as a result, needed to design the approach towards the secondary front door rather than the principle one. The secondary drive was designed to be rerouted through the adjacent spinney, to keep vehicles away from the front of the house and provide access to the garages. Following a trip to Bruns with the client, Deakinlock supplied 18 seven metre high Tilia cordata for the avenue, and eight box head specimens for
THE ENTHUSIASM AND DESIRE REMAINED TO DELIVER A HIGH QUALITY GARDEN FOR THE CLIENT the drive approach, plus various other mature and semi-mature trees and shrubs for the project. The client declined any written specification or detail drawings, and the project evolved with the designer retained on site for two visits per week, to work with Stewart Landscape Construction to resolve any design related issues arising and details as required. Work continued on the rear gardens as construction to the front began, with Deakinlock and Stewart Landscape working to

stitch the two projects together. Whilst it was an unusual way to manage a project, it allowed the client to keep it a fluid one, with the principle layout plan revised 23 times as a result! At times this was a challenge for all involved, but throughout, the enthusiasm and desire remained to deliver a high quality garden for the client. APL judges commented, “An excellent piece of landscaping showing great restraint in plant selection giving an understated yet striking garden. he brief from the client was to open up a piece of neglected and overgrown land and make it into something they would enjoy using. The front area had to be low maintenance and so the ‘no mowing’ mantra was firmly enforced. We were presented with rudimentary drawings on scrap paper and a spike in the ground where a potential water feature might go. From a preliminary set of measurements we outlined a design which incorporated what the client wanted in terms of shapes and included some nice touches of our own. Our client’s response which accompanied their acceptance was, “Yes…but there may be some small changes when you arrive”. Our first task was to clear the site during 52

which we made several discoveries (an old pond, several wall footings and a nest of rats). The north to south drop was not conducive to either grading or levelling out as it left one or other side looking bad. One major problem was that the

reworked the plan to cater for the tiers and looked at how the paths would connect to navigate the garden as a whole. This project included the construction of a Balau hardwood screen and a custom built, tongue and groove, Balau gate. I managed to get the client and neighbour to allow me to mount the screen over the wall as the previous lap panels were quite frankly awful. The up stands were hidden and the timber mounted with a hidden fixing system so no visible mounts were present anywhere. This was a labour of love as lining all the joints up to match and still avoid a ridiculous amount of wastage was like constructing a large heavy jigsaw puzzle. We installed two aqua cells with three drainage points so that we could maintain falls for every patio. We considered slot drains along the south wall but due to the expense we came up with a rill made from the paving that was being used. This was set to fall to two separate planting beds with an overflow to the second aqua cell. It looked almost invisible but was very efficient. Pro Landscaper / June 2014 53

FINISHING TOUCHES INCLUDED SLATE MOSAICS IN THE PAVING AND HIDDEN RILLS The gate connecting across a diagonal to the front and side gardens required a pair of timber posts 90mm x 90mm cut with a ‘bird beak’ cut into them as I didn’t want a made up assortment of timbers to achieve the angle required to keep the gate housed straight. These slotted nicely over the edges of the building and wall and gave me the perfect angle to hang the custom gate. This was made onsite to fit perfectly and if you look closely at the detail on the gate you may notice that every screw was set to north/ south, including the hinges and even the gate stops. Finishing touches included slate mosaics in the paving, hidden rills, replacing the struts to the front porch to link in the timber with the side dining area, staggered lifts to kerbstones and one neat little trick we used that most people miss. On the picture to the right you can see a section of stones that look like they should fall out at any time as they have no visible fixing method. We drilled them and used concrete bolts to pin them together on two axes to get over the height issue on the risers. This worked wonderfully and saved our bacon as the supplier had no ‘double length’ stone available. 54

NURSERY NEWS Boningale Nursery launch new ‘plants for wildlife’ catalogue Boningale Nursery, one of the UK’s leading horticultural specialists to the landscaping and amenity industry has teamed up with environmental experts to produce a unique catalogue for architects and contractors keen to maximise their ecological credentials when working on BREEAM and ecologically sensitive projects. The Shropshire-based company, which specialises in producing and sourcing hardy nursery stock for the landscape market from its 39-acre headquarters in Albrighton, says its
‘Plants for Wildlife’ catalogue will assist contractors working on ecological landscape projects to accommodate changes more efficiently. Working with global experts WYG Environment, Boningale horticulturalists devised the 20-page catalogue, which sets out hundreds of approved plant species and varieties that encourage ecological diversity and attract myriad wildlife to new-build sites and green urban spaces, including green roofs. It not only draws on evidence gathered in Sheffield University’s Biodiversity in Gardens (BUGS) study and the Database of Insects and their Food Plans (DBIF) research
by the Biological Records Centre, but also highlights if the plants are recommended by authoritative sources Natural England and the RSPB. The company’s comprehensive catalogue lists the native and common name of each plant and which birds, animals or insects are likely to benefit from the planting of each species, as well as Boningale GreenSky range of unique SkyPlugs – Boningale nurseries sister department that specialises in plants and substrates for green roofs. The sun is out at Deepdale Trees and everything is growing fantastically well. We’re currently extremely busy preparing and dispatching trees for the summer shows. As always it’s been a challenge to find the perfect plants, but this year our hard work has paid off and we were lucky enough to deliver to 16 gardens and stands at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. We also have many more trees ready to deliver to BBC Gardeners’ World Live, Hampton Court and Tatton Park flower shows. The weather has also helped the stock which we potted this autumn to root through. This means we now have an extra 10,000 air potted specimen trees and multistems available for delivery this summer. www.deepdale-trees.co.uk
Wyevale re-organises to offer ‘one-stop-shop’ One of the UK’s leading commercial nurseries has re-organised its business from three separate limited companies to one to enhance service, broaden its product range and offer customers a ‘one-stopshop’. Wyevale Containers, Wyevale Trees and Wyevale Transplants in Herefordshire officially re-launched last month under the generic name Wyevale Nurseries. The new company will be overseen by Managing Director, Andy Johnson (pictured). He said: www.prolandscapermagazine.com

“Wyevale Nurseries is embarking on the start of this new journey with renewed passion and determination to become market leaders in the supply of trees, transplants and container grown plants into the British market place. We continue to strive to be the customer’s first choice. “We aim to be the ‘one-stop-shop’ for the landscaping and retail markets and are focused on reaching a potential new audience and widening the customer base trade contacts that we currently have.
“The reorganisation will free up the team’s time to concentrate on and further enhance innovative production techniques and trialling new varieties, sustainable long into the future.” Wyevale Nurseries was established in 1928 by Harry Williamson, a horticultural pioneer and accomplished entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011. Andy added: “The Willliamsons were innovative growers who seized the opportunity to sell their
product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres and then a chain of them.” The family has wholeheartedly supported the existing investment plans. Native to southern Italy, Alnus cordata is fast growing and conical in form, ideal for parks, gardens and urban environments. Male and female catkins are produced in early spring before the leaves emerge. The male catkins long and pendulous and the female catkins smaller developing into woody cones. The leaves of Italian Alder are glossy and heart shaped and though deciduous, have a long season in leaf, holding on to its foliage later than many other trees. A tolerance of pollution, dry, compacted soils, coastal areas and wind make it a perfect tree for landscaping a wide range of sites. www.deepdale-trees.co.uk
Prunus lusitanica Variegata gives a slow growing dense evergreen hedge with a deep green foliage that is bordered with white. This gives it a different look to the majority of other hedges. Being slow growing it is ideal for being kept as a low hedge. If left untrimmed it will have fragrant white candle like flowers in the spring followed by small black berries. The best use for it is as a backdrop to colourful border planting in front and it will then come into its own during the winter with the variegation. www.readyhedgeltd.com
Malus ‘Royalty’ is an ornamental crab apple with dramatic dark red/purple leaves and beautiful crimson flowers in April to May. In autumn its fruits are deep red, whilst the leaves turn bronze. www.findwillow.co.uk/nurseries
Just the plant for just the spot. In an acidic to neutral soil in a sunny to partially shady spot Enkianthus campanulatus quietly does its thing and does so demurely. Outstanding in its quiet beauty the creamy, dusky pink bell shaped flowers with red veins are held in pendulous clusters from late spring to early summer. In the autumn the whorls of leaves turn fiery red and orange performing once again. Originating from woodlands in the Himalayas and Japan, Enkianthus are ideal for a woodland garden or a shady spot. Plant in a moisture retentive soil and you will be rewarded with a vibrant display in the autumn and a subtle sway of the flowers in spring. www.provendernurseries.co.uk

This cultivar of Field Maple is, in our opinion, the pick of the Acer campestre clones for street planting. Acer campestre Elegant retains a compact ascending habit, is vigorous in growth, and gives uniformity if planted in an avenue. Many clones are tricky to tell apart at maturity but Elegant’s stubby thick growth makes it easier to distinguish. It does best in rich, well drained soils, but does well in virtually any soil type, and will readily tolerate drought, soil compaction and air pollution. Typical of its type, it can go a glorious yellow in autumn and is a great host to a range of native wildlife. www.barcham.co.uk
Cistus are a group of medium sized evergreen shrubs, native to the dry and rocky soils of the Mediterranean. Happiest when grown in full sun, they are a very hardy genus; the common name Rockrose hints at their capability to survive in areas of low quality, rocky soil, making them ideal for use in rock gardens. Best known for their prolific flowers, Rockrose sport white, pink or purple blooms throughout the summer months, depending on the particular species. Notable varieties include Cistus Corbariensis (white), Cistus pulv. Sunset (pink) and Cistus Purpureus (purple). www.colesnurseries.co.uk

ARTIFICIAL GRASS MORE HINTS & TIPS
THE MAINTENANCE FREE MYTH
“All that is required is to keep the surface relatively free from debris (reducing the risk of it accumulating) and if and when the occasional weed does pop up or germinate in the grass, then just zap it with a weed gun (roundup or similar). An annual or six monthly ‘power brush’ or vigorous brush up with a stiff broom will always help the surface stay fresh and ‘fluffy’.” Rob Redcliffe, Managing Director, Namgrass UK
“One good tip we have is use a leaf blower to lift the pile once it has been installed, this will not only stand the pile up, it will also blow away any loose pieces of grass left over from the cutting in.” Stuart Hedgecock, Perfectly Green Ltd

“Pet owners need to carry out more maintenance than your average artificial grass lawn client, especially dog owners. Any mess should be removed from the surface regularly and the area should be hosed down. Any residue or stubborn areas can be cleaned with a combination of hot tap water and household detergent. To treat persistent smells a product such as Pet Wee Away should be applied to the area regularly, this will treat the smells and help to prevent any future problems.” Paula Rodham, Hi-Tech Turf Ltd
“Easigrass strongly recommends that artificial lawns are brushed once a year after the leaves have fallen in autumn. Artificial grass from any industry provider is low rather than ‘no’ maintenance.” Anthony J. Gallagher, Managing Director, Easigrass™ Distribution Ltd
“Use a soft to medium bristle brush once a month and brush the grass in all different directions, before finally brushing against the pile. This will leave the grass maintained in a vertical position, just how you want it. It is important to maintain the grass position to avoid compaction in the long term.” Mike Burton, National Trade Manager, Trulawn

HIGH END ARTIFICIAL GRASS Blades’ Balearic is a luxurious 38mm pile artificial grass comprising 55 per cent polyethylene and 45 per cent polypropylene. Multi-tone green blades are supported by twisted brown base fibres to give the grass its authentic appearance. A higher than average stitch-rate provides additional overall support to minimise compression over time and gives Balearic a super-soft underfoot feel. The backing utilises a woven polypropylene, fibre locked fleece with a quality latex compound to make Balearic robust enough for all applications, even high-use areas. Manufactured in the EU, it comes with a nine year guarantee and is pet and child-friendly. £32 per m² (trade rates available) WWW.BLADESGRASS.CO.UK
Green Eclipse is a revolutionary artificial grass that has been developed and manufactured by Namgrass over the last two years. Why is it revolutionary? Because it features a ‘dual memory’ yarn (’S’ and ‘C’ profiled fibres) that are extremely resilient, but unlike all other ‘memory yarn’ products on the market, it remains very soft and tactile. Manufacturing such a product has required a whole new approach to the historical manufacturing technique, thus new/updated tufting machines have been installed into the factor. With these machines now in place, not only are we able to control and alter the manufacturing process much more precisely (creating a unique ‘look’ to our products) but it also extends the possibilities to many more new, and innovative products – so watch this space. £26.99 per m² (trade pricing and samples available upon request) WWW.NAMGRASS.CO.UK

A newcomer to Hi-Tech Turf’s range in 2014, HT Riviera is a top of the range artificial grass and now one of their most popular turfs. The fantastic aesthetics of this grass are what makes it their most luxury item, 40mm pile height, high density, soft and resilient yarn provide for a luxurious feel under foot. This turf is perfect for creating a lush, natural, healthy looking lawn. £28 per m² WWW.HITECHTURF.CO.UK/HT-RIVIERA
Trulawn Supreme is new to the Trulawn product range for 2014 and has already become one of the bestselling trade products. The reason for Supreme’s popularity is due to its 37mm pile height which gives it the lush grass look that currently appeals to domestic customers. The trade price point for Supreme is just £20.99 per m² which is good value for such a ‘high spec’ grass and delivers on the all-important margins for trade customers. WWW.TRULAWN.CO.UK
Perfectly Green launched Norfolk Artificial Grass in early 2013, it is a 40mm tri coloured product, the yarn is diamond shaped which enables it to spring back in to position when walked on. Since its launch it has become by far the best selling product, it is very natural looking with a very soft lush feel underfoot, due to the density of the product it is ideal for high used areas, schools and nurseries go for this product every time. £23.50 per m² (large reductions for trade customers). EDUCATING THE FUTURE In the light of recent problems being faced by the industry, in particular the highly publicised green skills gap, Pro Landscaper wanted to investigate further into the training both provided and required for working in the industry. We asked design firms and landscape contractors what they look for when taking on new employees, what training or education they require, and what they believe to be lacking. We then asked a selection of colleges what courses they offer in garden design, horticulture and landscaping, and how and if they are working with employers to train students for successfully transitioning into employment, sending them off with the required qualifications, experience and knowledge.
DESIGN PRACTICES Janine Pattison Studios Our designers all have garden design degrees and a creative and positive attitude. We’ve found that the rigour of a degree course means that our team are committed to their careers. We like them to have some experience of Vectorworks Landmark so that they can be productive straightaway, but we are also happy to develop them with our style and procedures. Awareness of the industry, how it works, key players and giving students realistic expectations of what they can expect once they join the industry would be valuable and many colleges gloss over these issues. Ultimately it needs stressing that a career in garden design involves a lot more than wandering around a nursery choosing plants!

Aralia Garden Design Finding the right candidate, particularly in a smaller practice such as ours, is essential. We look at a range of core abilities, these include: • Spatial design: what makes for a successful space, the ability to visualise how the space will be used. • Graphics: a good knowledge of using current software, also hand graphics are essential. • Practical: we look for candidates who have the ability to take what they have learnt and have the practical mind to integrate it into their daily role. • Communication: this is by far the most important skill set, the ability to communicate to clients, contractors and suppliers, ensuring the project runs smoothly and everyone is aware of their responsibilities. I believe communication is one of the areas where colleges and universities require more emphasis within their syllabus: the ability to communicate ideas and provide professional advice is a learnt skill for most people, and is essential.

John O’Conner At John O’Conner we believe in ‘growing our own’ and invest in training and development of our staff to progress through the business from the ground up. As a family owned company we wish to nurture our family ethos and are looking for people passionate about their work. College education is not paramount, we have partnerships with local colleges and KEITS for functional work based diplomas to support our staff in this, what is more important is communication skills and practical training. Matt O’Conner, Managing Director, and Neil Cain, Operations Director, are also both National Apprenticeship Service Ambassadors and believe that a stronger connection is required between school/college career departments and students to promote apprenticeships and work based diplomas.
LANDSCAPE MAINTAIN AND BUILD ISS At ISS our overriding focus is on the career development of our staff and on succession planning – who will be the future of our business. We are looking predominantly at a candidate’s aptitude, motivation and enthusiasm, and then provide them with the necessary education and training for their future development. In essence, ISS is ‘training for the future’ not just for the job currently in hand. Colleges are not delivering courses which meet the specific skills required for our industry; they rely on the horticulture sector businesses for support and as such should be reaching out to research what training and skills are actually required by us for entrants coming into the industry. ISS already work with selected colleges on advanced leadership and diploma courses for our staff, which are ISS supported courses.

Gavin Jones On the whole, Gavin Jones Ltd finds that when taking on new employees our philosophy of ‘recruit for attitude, train for skill’ stands us in good stead. In addition our employees, regardless of job title are enrolled on our newly formed Gavin Jones Diploma; an in-house training initiative designed to increase our employees’ knowledge of horticulture. There is often a lack of practical experience. Better work experience or work placement schemes would help resolve this.
Glendale While it is great to see new employees with relevant qualifications, for us what is more important is that practical skills are in place. We look for previous experience and skills learned within the industry, especially if they are in horticulture and arboriculture as these are key to our business and mean that new employees can hit the ground running. We do believe that a college education is important as students can get an academic grounding in their chosen field. We believe there could be more focus in colleges on the practical side of things. Courses such as the City & Guilds NPTC ride on equipment or spraying certificates would help employability. Colleges could also encourage or provide driving courses.

COLLEGES Merrist Wood Your courses: Merrist Wood offers a number of courses in Landscape Construction and Horticulture, and Sports Turf including Level 2 and 3 Diplomas and apprenticeships. We also offer tailored short courses for individual companies in specific subjects such as turf care, chainsaw use, spraying or pruning. Are you working with landscape contractors to ensure you are training students sufficiently with the skills and to the standard that employers require? We have very good links with the industry via the apprenticeship schemes which involves having strong relationships with the employers. In addition we regularly host regional BALI meetings and ‘Careers Events’, during which we canvas
employers and contractors on their needs and requirements from newly qualified students and apprentices. Our aim is to equip landscapers and horticulturists with the basic knowledge and skills for their working life, but this is really embedded and developed in the workplace and that is what makes the apprenticeship scheme so valuable: it’s a three way partnership between Merrist Wood College, the apprentice, and the employer. Health & safety in every situation is a key part of our training schemes and we try to deliver what the industry tells us they want: landscapers, with a good work ethic, who understand the principles and practices of preparation and construction along with a good knowledge of plants, their care and maintenance.
Plumpton College Your courses: Horticulture can be studied either at the main Plumpton College site, or at Stanmer Park. The majority of modules have both theoretical and practical content. Work experience is where students make vital contacts within the horticultural industry and perfect essential skills. How are you hoping to best prepare students to enter the workplace? Our employers are looking for people with practical skills and in-depth knowledge of plants, soils, landscaping and design, plus a sound business sense. The City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma, Horticulture course is designed to give the students all of these attributes and more. Our courses provide an extensive range of work experience providers.
Are you working with contractors and design practices to ensure you are training students sufficiently with the skills and to the standard that employers require? Plumpton College has extensive liaison with design professionals and contractors to ensure full training with the skills and to the standard that employers require. It is a past recent Gold medal winner at Hampton Court Flower show. The College are winners at student design competitions at various shows. Students have many opportunities to progress further in their courses with flexibility, various course options and training opportunities considered. Plumpton College offers a wide and successful range of apprenticeships. www.plumpton.ac.uk
The London College of Garden Design What are the main components of your garden design course – how are you hoping to best prepare students to enter the workplace? We aim to take a fresh approach to our garden design courses, making sure that students get carefully targeted professional skills. As well as core design and plant skills we provide intensive business and

construction teaching led by practicing professionals so that students can launch successful businesses as soon as they graduate. Are you working with design practices to ensure you are training students sufficiently with the skills and to the standard that employers require?
All the directors have their own design practices and our design tutors such as Adam Frost, Jo Thompson, Peter Thurman and Philip Nixon are all practicing professionals so we know what employers are looking for. Even more so because we uniquely operate a work experience for our students with designers and design and build companies.

Berkshire College What are the main components of your landscaping or garden design courses? The range of courses on offer here have always been set up with the industry in mind. Over the years we have found that we get many learners who wish to be either landscapers or work within garden maintenance and as such our units that we select reflect this in line with our learners’ desires. On the other hand we do find that their impression of what is needed can sometimes be different from what the industry actually wants, with the most obvious area being that of plant knowledge. We have increasing put an emphasis on this over some of the more traditional aspects such as lawn care and vegetable growing despite current trends. We have been working towards making our courses much more practical in order to get them
confident in their own skills and enable them to learn new ones but this can be restricted by the nature of the qualifications as set out by the awarding bodies. How are you hoping to best prepare students to enter the workplace? All of our teaching staff in the department have all come from industry and follow current trends as well as liaising regularly with industry to see what skills are required by differing businesses. We use this to push and promote the various opportunities available in the trade and regularly try to get industry in to speak to groups. Work experience is core to all courses where we work towards getting our learners towards what the industry wants and what would be expected of them when they go out to find employment. Unfortunately we have seen a
real drop in the standards of those wishing to come on our programmes in the Further Education side and are suffering from this old impression of horticulture, especially gardening, where it is only suitable to those with low education and who like to ‘work outside’. We are struggling to get those with the practical skills and leadership skills to provide for an industry that is shouting out for these, leading to our skills shortage. Are you working with contractors and design practices to ensure you are training students sufficiently with the skills and to the standard that employers require? We have continued to work very closely with the industry and all related stakeholders to ensure that the programmes/courses offered
relate to what skills our learners need. We are also working hard to adjust courses and units covered to provide a best fit for the industry that at the same time offers an interesting course for our learners to undertake. We have found that colleges are being blamed for the employees that they get out of education but his does us a disservice. We are working incredibly hard to drive our learners with the passion and enthusiasm to do well for themselves and really push the wealth of opportunities available and the good salaries that can be achieved in the right sector. The industry needs to help colleges to promote themselves by highlighting the fantastic opportunities available and giving the right salaries to reflect the skilled work that it is.
Writtle Your courses: We offer both Landscape Architecture and Garden Design programmes, ranging from a one day per week Diploma in Garden Design, Foundation Degree in Garden Design, Honours Degrees in both Landscape Architecture, and Landscape and Garden Design, a Masters Conversion Course in both Garden Design and Landscape Architecture, through to Masters and PhDs in Landscape Architecture and Garden Design. How are you hoping to best prepare students to enter the

workplace? Our undergraduate programmes apply current and sustainable technologies through the perspectives of gardens, landscapes and the built environment as part of a social and ecological approach to a constantly changing world. Focused and practically applied modules engage with ‘live’ projects and real clients ensuring that learning is meaningful and authentic. Students are taught to use software that they will meet when employed in the industry, plant knowledge, surveying skills, dealing with clients, the production
of working drawings and the use of hard landscape materials. Are you working with design practices to ensure you are training students sufficiently with the skills and to the standard that employers require? We consult with both landscape architecture and garden design practitioners on both the writing of a courses and the delivery. We have a professional review group that meet once a year and comment on which current trends need to be addressed in our teaching.

Double birthday Makita helps Titchmarsh build RHS Chelsea Britain celebration at Amazone in Bloom garden Makita power tools have been used by Landform Consultants, the award-winning landscape design and maintenance company, to create Alan Titchmarsh’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden, his first for 30 years. A wide collection of high performance Makita power tools, including jigsaws, drills, disc cutters, mitre saws, pumps, blowers, reciprocating saws, self-levelling lasers and demolition hammers, were selected for the build by Mark Gregory, managing director of Landform Consultants. “I first met Alan when I was a 20-year old RHS Wisley trainee and he was a BBC radio reporter,” says Mark Gregory, “so it is a great honour for me and my team to work with him and share this celebration.
And Makita has helped to make this happen. The Australian volunteers couldn’t bring their own tools and they were thrilled when I told them of my relationship with Makita which is the brand they use at home.” Australian David Pontifex enthused: “There’s a huge thank you to Makita from all of us. It was heaven to our ears when Mark told us what we would be using. Conditions here demand reliable tools that can keep pace with this challenging build. Our biggest concern was arriving to kit that couldn’t deliver the job but Makita kit is the best for power, reliability and accuracy. And that’s a great job site radio which has bounced a few times this week, I can tell you, without coming to any harm.” www.makitauk.com
It’s true, father and son were both born on 7 May, one in 1934 and the other one in 1964 and they have now jointly reached 130 years: Klaus Dreyer, former director of AmazonenWerke in the third generation and his son Christian Dreyer, the current director in the fourth generation. On the 10 May, 2014 the mutual celebration of the 80th and 50th birthdays was held with many friends and colleagues at Amazone in Hasbergen-Gaste. Continually the motto ‘We have to go out into the world’ has dominated the work both of Klaus,
and now also Christian Dreyer. So, as general manager, Klaus Dreyer, in addition to the looking after national market, also strongly expanded the international Amazone sales network. During his time, Amazone opened its access to numerous new markets, above all in Europe whilst at the same time, Klaus Dreyer was intensively engaged with the extension and the permanent modernisation of the production lines. Emerging under his regime – and at that time path-breaking – was the introduction of Amazone taking, in-house, the production of hydraulic rams, gear boxes and plastic components. www.amazone.co.uk

EQUIPMENT NEWS Little Wonder at Blenheim Palace Cast an eye on a sunny day across the Capability Brown landscape at Blenheim Palace and the sun reflects off the famous lake amid the rolling slopes of grassland. Faced with the need to clear areas of weeds and vegetation between the trees, as well as scrub and Hawthorne around the park, Blenheim forester Robert Burgess contacted local dealers Turney Groundforce at Weston-on-the Green to talk about a solution. Robert and his forestry assistants, part of the Blenheim’s eight strong Rural Department team, had ruled out spraying as not environmentally friendly and not possible of course on windy days. What was especially
liked about the Little Wonder was the fact you could get very close to the trees without causing any damage, as well as the benefit of hydrostatic drive, making it highly manoeuvrable and dramatically reducing the physical effort of taking down tough scrub. The Turney Group has been
supplying Blenheim Palace with everything from mowing equipment to brushcutters and power blowers over the past 25 years. Mike Leach, their Area Sales Manager, handed over the new Little Wonder Brushcutter in mid-April to Robert Burgess. www.littlewonder.uk.com

J O’Connor, who has taken delivery of a new X135R ride-on lawn mower from local John Deere dealership, Seamus Weldon. Michael turned 100 last October. The X135R is only Michael’s second ride-on mower. His previous model was also a John Deere, which he bought from Weldons in May 2005 when his
family suggested that it was time to get someone in to mow the lawns for him. “No way”, was Michael’s response to that idea, although he did decide to replace his 12-year old John Deere 14SB walk-behind with a ride-on. With three separate lawns in a garden that’s around half an acre, cutting the grass with a walk-behind mower had become a considerable task, even for someone who’s been gardening for well over 60 years and regarded mowing the lawn as much better exercise than taking up golf. www.JohnDeere.co.uk

THE ARB SHOW
DON’T MISS IT!
Sponsorship by STIHL in its 10th year • 6-7 June 2014 • Bathurst Estate, Cirencester This is the 16th ARB Show and the ninth year we have based the event at the Bathurst Estate. 2014 is also the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Arboricultural Association – which has been marked by a number of events throughout the UK in the last few months. It also marks the 10th year that our main sponsors STIHL have supported the ARB Show – look out for their stand and demonstrations of the new MSA 160 T, and a chance to win one! It’s only a couple of weeks away: the 2014 ARB Show area at the Bathurst estate is cleared and ready to go and in the next few days we will be building the show site and facilities. The ARB Show is still the longest established dedicated arborist’s show in the UK and this year promises to be better than ever. Following the success of ARB Show 2013 Simon Richmond Senior Technical Officer is looking forward to an even better attended show, explaining “exhibitor pitches have booked up fast and we are seeing a number of new exhibitors who will be showing new products and technologies that will undoubtedly be a big draw for this year’s visitors” The entry is free for Arboricultural Association members, and is £8.50 for everyone else. The ARB Show is a great day out for anyone working or with an interest in the arboriculture 76

sector. Visitors can update their knowledge and skills through practical demonstrations and in the STIHL-sponsored Contractors’ Workshop sessions taking place each day. Come and talk to the Association Grab a free tea or coffee at the Arboricultural Association tent and we can tell you all about the great benefits you can receive as a member of the Association or the Arb approved contractor scheme. The association is working hard to really understand what our members and prospective members look for from the organisation. We have carried out a number of surveys throughout the year which have helped to develop more services for members – but we want to hear your thoughts and ideas – so come along and tell us what’s on your mind. Headline sponsor for the show STIHL will be launching their new MSA 160 T cordless model. Marking its 10th year as main sponsor of the popular ARB Show, STIHL is demonstrating how its technology has advanced with its latest specialist chainsaw at the event this year. Visitors can see the new cordless model working quietly in the trees, plus more new products at the show that will make arb work easier, more efficient and quite simply more

TRACMASTER
CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF LANDSCAPE MACHINERY INNOVATION
C
ast your mind back to 1984 – Wham! were riding high in the charts and over five million people were tuning in each week to watch Geoffrey Smith present Gardeners’ World on TV. It was also the year that Sussex businessman and entrepreneur Stephen Pitt won the UK franchise for the Italian-manufactured BCS two-wheel tractor, thus laying the foundations of Tracmaster, now itself a leading manufacturer and distributor of landscaping and groundcare machinery. 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of this successful family business, which over the years has developed two key brands, CAMON and BCS; both widely respected within the landscaping industry. The company offers 18 machines and 24 implements in total, from bank commanders, mowers and power scythes to scarifiers, rotavators and wood chippers. “Our aim was originally to sell two-wheel tractors into horticultural outlets and our first customer was Brighton Council, whom we still supply,” explains Pitt, “but we soon diversified into supplying hire companies and then conservation organisations. We followed this by adding selected machines to our range in response to customers’ needs. The market is continually evolving, and so www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Tracmaster birthday.indd 83
is technology, and not only are we continually upgrading and improving our key products, with for example more powerful engines, but researching and developing new products to bring to market. “An important new development in the past 10 years has been the increase in professional landscape contractors,” Pitt adds, “who previously would hire machines but now buy them outright, direct from Tracmaster.” For all landscape customers, Stephen Pitt believes that high quality performance, reliability and simplicity of use are more important than cost considerations. The key is in providing a range of implements that can fulfill a wide variety of needs. “A landscaper will invest in, say a BCS 740 two wheel tractor power unit,” he explains “and then by selecting particular attachments, such as a rotavator, flail mower, scythe cutter bar and a snow brush, they have a machine they can use all the year round.” Other noticeable developments include the influence of TV gardening makeover shows. “Sales of the turf cutter in particular rocketed as a result of the popular TV series Groundforce, when suddenly it was fashionable to rip up a lawn and replace it with decking!” Pitt comments. While Antony is part of the team that deals with new enquiries and sales – often clocking up hundreds of miles each week on the road, demonstrating machines or delivering products to customers, Alex is spearheading the manufacturing arm of the company. Currently five key products from their own-brand CAMON are
designed and manufactured in-house, including the scarifier, aerator, turf cutter, rotavator and wood chipper, and in the past 12 months manufacturing output has risen by an impressive 82 per cent. Tracmaster has plans to increase the number of products it designs and manufactures in-house too; this allows the company to offer a very high-quality of build and innovation, plus control over the production process. “Innovation is crucial,” explains Stephen, “our business will grow from constantly communicating with our existing customers and establishing from them what style or type of machines they would like us to improve and supply them with. If our customers have a need, we must be receptive and respond to it. CAMON Tracmaster’s own brand is synonymous within the UK hire industry for ground-cultivation, chippers and shredders and lawn care machinery that is built to survive the rigours of continuous use without compromise of performance. The company uses the range as a platform to improve, develop and manufacture a larger number of products. Among the newest products for 2014 are an upgraded lawn aerator and wood chipper. BCS Tracmaster’s partnership with BCS has proved to be extremely successful. The number of BCS machines available includes two-wheel tractors, power scythes, snow clearing equipment and a commander professional mower. Tracmaster also offers a wide range of implements and accessories. www.tracmaster.co.uk Pro Landscaper / June 2014 83

”
PERSONAL I drive a mini Countryman – it’s ideal for work – it’s a comfortable drive and very generous boot space. I’m a big fan of the Mini brand used to drive a Cooper – I’ve upgraded. My favourite shops are Paul Smith, his design is very inspiring; Vitra who sell incredible furniture; and Selfridges, a treasure trove of beautiful products and something for everyone. Dining out is a real treat for me and I enjoy trying out both new and classic restaurants and my particular favourites are The Ivy and the restaurant at the Chiltern Firehouse in London’s Marylebone. Most of the time I’m busy with work - there never sees to be enough hours in the day or night but I always try and find time to see new design exhibitions. My favourite possession is my collection of wrist beads – I wear them always and have done so for 20 years. Some of them have been gifts or mementoes from my travels.
E
TRAVEL I adore Europe, and in particular I love European cities, some of my favourites are Barcelona, Amsterdam, Paris, and London. As well as city breaks I like to escape to the beach and the countryside whenever I can. Variety is the spice of life and I like a mix, I would describe myself as eclectic – I appreciate beauty in its many forms. I have a house in Cyprus so make lots of visits throughout the year – winter sunshine is always a bonus. I own a caravan in West Wittering in West Sussex – so it’s fair to say that I enjoy contrast! A little bit of luxury never goes amiss but I’m just as happy to camp and rough it. I’m hoping to travel a bit further afield and indulge my love of visiting new places and India is next on my list. www.prolandscapermagazine.com
