The Roof Gardens set to exhibit 75th anniversary garden at Chelsea
Work begins on Greenfingers garden at Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice
The Roof Gardens in Kensington are celebrating their 75th anniversary with a garden which highlights the past, present and future of the historic gardens. The inspiration for the garden is The Spanish Garden designed by Ralph Hancock in 1936 and features its original pillars, iron gates and balconies. An arched façade, gate and pillars taken from Ralph Hancock’s 1939 RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden will also be included. All the plants have been grown at the Roof Gardens in Kensington and a ‘falling leaves’ copper water feature, by Lawrence
Greenfingers charity is creating a fully accessible magical woodland walk at Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice in West Sussex. Garden designer Ann-Marie Powell has designed the woodland garden, with a landscape team from Garden House Design building the project. Greenfingers have received amazing support from suppliers across the industry to help with the project. Emma Hanford, Greenfingers’ Garden Project Manager, said, “We couldn’t create this woodland walk without the wonderful support of those who have supplied us with essential materials, manpower and services. Although we are now ready to start building the garden there are still other materials and products we

are in need of including native woodland plants, composted bark and wildlife habitats – if anyone can help us with those items we’d love to hear from them.” This garden will be built as part of the charity’s ‘Rosy Cheeks’ appeal, which aims to build at least ten more gardens at children’s hospices around the UK over the next two years. The garden aims to highlight how accessible and inspiring green roofs can be whilst the planting demonstrates the variety that can be used to such effect in smaller spaces. Designer of the garden, David Lewis has been the Head Gardener at Kensington Roof Gardens for five years and returns to the show after his Courtyard Garden was awarded a Silver medal in 1999. Glendale complete major tree planting project in Wiltshire Glendale has recently completed a major project to plant 26,000 trees at Thoulstone Park, near Chapmanslade. Lead by Glendale Countryside’s woodland and countryside manager Bill Griffiths and his team, based in Marlborough, it was delivered on time and on budget. This is the second scheme completed for the owners of the
park, James and Alka Hughes-Hallet, after Glendale carried out a similar substantial planting project for them in Somerset between 2007 and 2009. The owners are eventually aiming to create an eco-sustainable community focusing on tourism and leisure, and the woodland is the first phase of the programme. www.glendale-services.co.uk

Frosts Landscape Construction to work on TV gardening show Frosts Landscape Construction have been selected to design and construct the gardens on the next series of ITV1’s Love Your Garden. Love Your Garden, fronted by RHS ambassador Alan Titchmarsh begins filming the fourth series in spring 2014. In this series the team will help eight deserving families by landscaping their gardens to improve their day to day quality of life. Frosts Landscape Construction, part of the Frosts Group, will be responsible for designing gardens to meet the individual requirements of each chosen family and constructing them. The TV programme follows the process from start to finish and combines social interest with a horticultural and landscaping lilt. Ken White, Managing Director of Frosts Landscape Construction, said “Alan is without doubt one of the most recognisable personalities in horticulture. His passion and support of the industry has been tireless. This
will be the Frost’s first venture in to the exciting world of television with its unique set of challenges.” Alan Titchmarsh said “Frosts are one of the most respected contractors in the country and I look forward to building eight stunning gardens with them for the new series of Love Your Garden.” Dan Blumson, head of garden design and construction at Frosts and project manager for the series said “I am really excited about this new project and feel honoured to be a part of such a brilliant TV show. This is new territory for the team here at Frosts and we are looking forward to delivering high quality, beautiful gardens with Alan and the team at Love Your Garden. We know that we will be working to very tight deadlines on the show and we will have to be able to cope with any issues as they arise. This is why we have put together a brilliant team of highly skilled people to work on this project. Each of our operatives has their own specialisms but they will all muck in on other tasks as the situation demands. Of course one of the biggest concerns may in fact be the weather issues we are currently facing in the UK, but because of our great team spirit we feel confident we can conquer any challenge the show may present (and we will most definitely be packing our waterproofs!!). Living Landscapes to restore forecourt of Walworth church Living Landscapes will carry out the restoration of the forecourt of St Peter’s Church, Walworth. Work began in February with the project headed up by Director Tecwyn Evans. He says, “It’s an honour to have the chance to restore the grounds of this church, which has a long heritage at the heart of the community.” Hopefully, once the forecourt is completed, the team will move on
to revive the garden, which has been a much-loved community treasure for 120 years. If charity funding gets the green light, Living Landscapes will team up with garden designer Peter Reader, following their award-winning collaboration at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, where their ‘Four Corners’ garden scooped a Silver-Gilt medal and People’s Choice Award. ETI update: business and human rights in Rajasthan’s sandstone sector Late last year, UK building, construction and landscaping sector leaders gathered in central London to learn about a new business and human rights project in the export sandstone sector of Rajasthan, India. Pro Landscaper attended to find out more. The event was hosted by the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), a UK-based alliance that promotes respect for workers’ rights in international supply chains. ETI and its member stone companies, trade unions and NGOs shared details of a new two-year project to advance the business and human rights agenda within Rajasthan’s sandstone sector. Rajasthan, a large state in north-west India, is one of the country’s main producers of sandstone. Each year, around 280,000 tonnes of sandstone is shipped to the UK for use in commercial and domestic driveways, patios and pavements. ETI Head of Programmes, Debbie Coulter, said: “Workers in Rajasthan’s sandstone sector face a number of challenges, with reports highlighting issues of forced and bonded labour and grave health and safety concerns. The event offered an important opportunity to share what we know with UK industry representatives, highlighting how our members are proactively working with local industry to improve working conditions.” The project builds on work that ETI members have undertaken within their Rajasthan sandstone supply chains. During the past year, ETI and

members undertook extensive in-country research and stakeholder engagement, including a number of meetings and field visits. This highlighted that while Western markets demand compliance with labour codes and standards, implementation and enforcement is not always easy. Debbie Coulter said: “Our project is about improving sector-wide capacity to address business and human rights issues. The focus is very practical; we are developing tools and resources that quarry and stone processing yard owners can use to embed human rights principles within their core business activities. The aim is that this will lead to grievance mechanisms being better integrated into business procedures, so that workers have stronger channels for making their voices heard.” The project is being driven forward by a group of 11 ETI company

WHAT THE STONE COMPANIES SAID Marshalls is an ETI member company and project participant. Chris Harrop, Chair of United Nations Global Compact in the UK and Group Marketing Director & Director of Sustainability of Marshalls, said: “The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights places new expectations on governments and businesses, in terms of upholding respect for workers’ rights within global supply chains. This is a pioneering project; you are seeing UK and European stone importers joining forces, intent on upholding their pledge

So how can UK landscapers find out more? “Our advice is to get in touch with the ETI stone company members that are part of this project,”
to workers within the Rajasthan sandstone supply chain.” Brett Landscaping is also an ETI member company and project participant. We spoke to their Production Planner, Duncan Robertson: “We joined ETI around five years ago as a means to understanding issues in our supply chains and what we could do to drive change. Being a member of ETI, as a group and as a collective, gives us the means to contribute to real and lasting change for the lives of those workers supplying us with products.”
said Debbie. “These companies have committed to implementing the ETI Base Code of labour practice within their supply chains. They can talk you through the project and the steps they’re taking to drive sustained and positive change for Rajasthan’s sandstone workers.” www.ethicaltrade.org/stone

You’re hired! Taking on an apprentice INVESTMENT IN EMPLOYEES National Apprenticeship Week is approaching, the National Apprenticeship Service discusses why apprenticeships are thriving and continuing to rise in popularity.
A key driving force behind the continued growth of apprenticeships in the workplace is the return on investment that employers are seeing by sourcing untapped talent in this way. A recent study by the British Chambers of Commerce showed businesses that offer apprenticeships view them as beneficial to their long-term development by enabling the organisation to grow their skills base from within. Additionally, more than nine out of ten employers who take on an apprentice report a boost in productivity, improved products or services, improved staff morale and better staff retention. Demand for apprenticeships has also risen exponentially; the latest figures show that the number of online vacancies available between August and October 2013 rose by 24 per cent to more than 37,000. However, the number of applications rose by 43 per cent; demand is continuing to rise faster than supply so there is much more to do if we are to reach the scale of our international competitors. There are a number of reasons why there has never been a better time to employ an apprentice: www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Apprentices News Extra.indd 11
● Apprenticeships help businesses grow their own talent Nearly every employer that takes on an apprentice (96 per cent) reports benefits to their business. Benefits include improved product or service, the introduction of new ideas to the organisation, improved staff morale and better staff retention, each mentioned by around two-thirds of employers. ● Apprenticeships develop a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce Businesses that offer apprenticeships view them as beneficial to their long-term development; most employ an apprentice to improve the skills base within their business. ● Apprenticeships improve productivity while reducing costs The average apprenticeship completer increases business productivity by £214 per week, with these gains including increased profits, lower prices and better products.
Furthermore, if you have less than 1000 employees, you may qualify for a £1,500 grant to help cover the cost of starting a new apprentice aged 16 to 24 years old.
The National Apprenticeship Service is here to support employers and has made it easier than ever to employ an apprentice
Our dedicated employer teams, including small and medium sized business specialists, are on hand to guide you through the simple three-step process to hiring an apprentice: the three D’s – decide, deliver, and develop. ● Decide on your requirements with an Apprenticeship Adviser and drive recruitment through our free apprenticeship vacancies service. ● Deliver the apprenticeship, working with a training organisation to reduce the burden on your business. ● Develop your apprentice and enter them into awards and competitions to put your business on the map.
National green services company, Glendale has boosted its ranks with its 101st apprentice, as part of its commitment to developing the talents of young people across the UK. 16-year-old Ellie Jeffry, from Liverpool, as well as being Glendale’s 101st apprentice, is also the first female apprentice at the Merseyside location.
Steve Pidgeley (second from right) was awarded ‘Apprentice of the Year 2013’ last October by Hampshire based landscaping company Hambrooks. He is one of five apprentices who completed Hambrooks’ course, which involved on-site training and attending the local horticultural college, Sparsholt.
Recruitment is made easy with apprenticeships

National Conference for Bradstone Assured Installers BRADSTONE ASSURED SCHEME EVENT On Friday 24 January 2014, Bradstone held their first National Conference for Bradstone Assured Installers, ‘The World at Our Feet’, at St George’s Park in Burton Upon Trent; the event gave them the opportunity to promote the upcoming year for the Bradstone Assured scheme, and share their excitement for what 2014 holds. Hosted by TV personality Ben Shephard, the day was kicked off with some words from Bradstone’s Sales Director Mike Leeming, during which we heard about their plans for 2014 as well as how important the Bradstone Assured scheme is to them. Mike said, “the event is a fantastic opportunity for you to not only enjoy what this venue has got to offer, but also to meet all of our team at Bradstone and find out a lot more about what we’re doing in the landscaping market”. Pro Landscaper had the chance to chat with Mike, who shared his thoughts on the day’s events and his hopes for Bradstone’s year ahead. “The big message to get across is that we’re investing heavily in Bradstone Assured, which is the key to our success here at Bradstone.” He told us, during the morning break after we’d seen a presentation from David Domoney, “It’s about building on the strength of the brand. We’re a hundred years old, we’ve got a good share in the marketplace – but we need our landscapers to drive as much value in what’s going to be a very promising year ahead, in terms of www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Green space survey and exclusive membership offer RHS Britain in Bloom A new survey looking at the impact of community gardening in the UK has revealed that the amount of green space RHS Britain in Bloom volunteers manage has increased ten-fold in just three years. RHS community gardeners look after more than 200,000 acres of public land, from pocket parks, to conservation sites. Local groups who responded to the survey are now responsible for the upkeep of on average, more than 110 acres of green space each, compared to just 10 acres per group in 2010.
The survey also shows that almost 60 per cent have turned abandoned land into usable community spaces such as allotments. It is estimated that, UK-wide, volunteers have transformed nearly 2,000 football pitches of neglected land. Over 60 per cent of groups run wildlife projects and manage seasonal displays and more than half run environmental clean-ups and recycling activities. Groups cite some of the key benefits of being part of RHS Britain in Bloom as being the development of a sense of community, cleaner and greener

View from the Top The results of the ISS annual People Survey are in. Phil Jones looks at why such a formal measurement of employee engagement is helpful, and what the latest survey has revealed
In this column last November I mentioned that we at ISS were in the middle of our annual People Survey, one of the ways we ask all of our employees a number of questions about how they feel about our business and the service they deliver to our customers. We now have the results of the 2013 survey, which has prompted me to consider a number of aspects of good employee engagement, i.e. the way we communicate with our staff and how much a part of the company they feel. Why measure the engagement and enablement of our employees in such a formal way? All those who run a business will know that people, especially in the service industry and more specifically our landscape industry, are our greatest and in many cases our only asset. That being said, many people, particularly accountants, look upon their payroll as a cost. I prefer to think of the cost of employing people as an investment rather than an expense. If we think in this way it places a whole different emphasis on employee engagement and the focus we should place upon it. I recently read that in an average company 70 per cent of employees are giving back in
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
View from the top.indd 19
performance only 50 per cent of what they are being paid. If this is true then 35 per cent of the payroll is pure cost, and for this there is absolutely no return on the investment. Generally speaking employees fall into one of four categories when focusing on enablement and engagement. These are detached, frustrated, most ineffective and most effective. It is my belief that the responsibility for influencing any change across these categories lies with effective leadership. Indeed I believe that leadership affects everything. Increasing engagement starts
I prefer to think of the cost of employing people as an investment rather than an expense with managers. To rely on these managers we must be sure that at all levels they have the emotional intelligence to understand the impact they are having on employee engagement. I also believe that all employees start out with a high level of commitment, or engagement, few are disengaged on day one of their employment. Therefore it follows in my mind that anything that ensues can be and usually is influenced by how those employees are treated. It needs a serious commitment from those privileged enough to manage staff to create a culture that sustains that high level of engagement amongst a workforce. Those who accept this responsibility and have the skills to effectively manage performance can have a positive impact
on employee engagement. There is a story about a naive student on his first English Literature course who was worried because he didn’t know what prose was. When he found out that prose was ordinary speech, he exclaimed, “Wow! I’ve been speaking prose all my life!” Managing performance well is like speaking prose. Many managers have been “speaking” and practicing effective performance management naturally all their supervisory lives, but don’t know it! Back to the ISS Our People Survey – I am delighted with our results; in every category of the survey we have seen an improvement on previous years. We have seen a significant increase in how enabled and engaged our employees say they are. If this was the only way we measured the feelings of our staff I would be less than convinced by the results than I am. However, the performance of our business in every area in 2013 shows that we are all engaged in the team effort. In one way the survey results merely bear this out. Because we carry out this survey every year, we set ourselves tight timescales to feedback results to our workforce and make the changes they have asked for in areas where there are strong trends. The overall message to feedback is that we are all providing a great return on our investment!

Horses for courses? With experience of teaching, validating and examining in most sectors Andrew Wilson considers how the vision and provision of garden design education has changed over the last 20 years
It has been some years since the Society of Garden Designers brought together the various garden design educational establishments. Last month saw the SGD engaging again with a range of current providers in order to better understand the educational systems in place. In the nineties the relatively quiet world of the private colleges, then the main providers of garden design education, was challenged by the university sector keen to cash in on a growing phenomenon with universities such as Middlesex and Greenwich racing to be the first programmes to be validated. Writtle followed with Leeds and Falmouth not far behind – the latter creating entirely new facilities to serve their students. The FE sector also enjoyed growth, eventually seeing the expansion of new foundation degrees in colleges such as Merrist Wood or Plumpton.

A time to reflect Angus Lindsay reflects on what has changed in the amenity horticulture industry over the last 20 years
This month will see my 20th year in the amenity horticulture industry, so I felt it time to look back and see what has changed and where the industry is going. The early nineties saw contractors getting to grips with Compulsory Competitive Tendering (CCT) along with local authorities learning for the first time how to deal with outsourcing some of their key services. The first years of CCT saw some interesting interpretations of specifications and service delivery – an outstanding example being the use of side-arm flails to prune shrub and even rose beds! There was no doubt that standards dropped as money was saved in the name of operational efficiency and skills were diluted as workforces were trimmed back. Then along came the national hire companies who set out to revolutionise our industry by supplying whatever you wanted wherever you needed it; where are they now? They failed to realise that our industry is not like construction where the same types of machines can be used all the year round. We manage living material within a changeable climate. Regional, independent, and dealer based hire operations have instead taken their place, able to provide a more focused service within an area they can comfortably manage. Local authorities were, in the past, notorious for having more machines than they needed and paying top dollar for them, they’d be over-specified, over-maintained and under-used; the same couldn’t be said for a contractor’s equipment which was worked harder, kept longer and occasionally brought back to life in order to get best value from the initial investment. Whilst technology is slowly changing the way we operate, the tools at our disposal are basically the same, albeit they’re a bit bigger and easier to 22
March 2014

use. Legislation has definitely made things safer by recognising and addressing risks such as vibration, noise, slopes and the benefits of training. Sadly this last point relies on attracting new people to our industry which seems more of a challenge than managing the weather.
On the face of it, not a lot’s changed over the last 20 years
Some things however have progressed...
So what about now? The squeeze on local authority budgets is seeing them take a more commercial approach, sometimes joining forces with neighbouring authorities to get better value. Facilities management and construction companies are making their presence felt by adding to their portfolio of security, cleansing and catering services by swallowing up grounds maintenance firms to offer a complete facilities management package. This is not always the perfect marriage as it’s a bit different dealing with things that grow, in an industry which is weather dependant and is subjected to an ever-changing variety of challenges. There will always be a place for professional grounds maintenance and landscaping
contractors in the UK. Many of the big names which came out of CCT are still key players in the industry and still led by the same people, but where is the next generation coming from? With the ghosts of CCT and Best Value fading into the past, most contracts are now procured using a combination of price and quality – with price sometimes being as low as 30 per cent of the evaluation and sometimes as high as 70 per cent. However, we’ve seen at least one large local authority tender recently awarded entirely on the basis of price with no interest at all taken in quality, training, track record or methodology. Standing atop my soap box I strongly feel we all have a responsibility to maintain the professionalism of our industry and not erode it by cut-throat pricing which will ultimately lead to a dilution of services. Will I do another 20 years? Who knows, if the government continues to raise the retirement age I may have to! I would also hope we can attract a better calibre of people to our industry and work towards a more realistic competitiveness.

Business Tips
A word of caution Compliance with the ‘Table 1 parameters’ does not necessarily mean a subsoil is suitable for every landscape situation or application. This Standard is intended for use throughout the UK but will not necessarily pick up regional variations (e.g. rainfall/ temperature) or site-specific issues. I would suggest using this as a starting point for all subsoil, but possibly consider narrowing some of the tolerances for certain parameters if your project requires it. For example, if you need a free-draining subsoil, I would recommend only selecting subsoil which has a high sand content.
The new British Standard for Subsoil (BS8601:2013) The first ever British Standard for Subsoil (BS8601:2013) was released in December 2013, with the intention of complementing the British Standard for Topsoil (BS3882:2007). The Standard specifies requirements for the classification, composition and use of subsoils that are moved or traded. Tim O’Hare explains...
Subsoil is the layer of soil that lies directly below topsoil, normally between approximately 200mm and 800mm in a soil profile. Compared with topsoil, it generally has a lower organic matter content and soil microbe population, contains lower levels of certain plant nutrients (e.g. nitrogen, sulphur) and is paler in colour. Subsoil is also a fundamental part of the soil profile and complements the functions of the overlying topsoil. It has a number of key roles: ● Acts as a reservoir of water during dry periods; ● Absorbs surplus water percolating down from the topsoil layer above; ● Provides the main anchorage and support for large shrubs and trees; ● Supplements the topsoil with reserves of mineral plant nutrients (e.g. potassium, magnesium, calcium); ● In a wider context, subsoil also provides a valuable ‘environmental service’ in the form of water attenuation during periods of high rainfall, and therefore controls the waterlogging of surface layers and reduces flooding.
24
March 2014
Tim O'Hare.indd 24
Why is a British Standard for Subsoil needed? Like its topsoil counterpart, the new British Standard for Subsoil is a good starting point for the assessment and procurement of subsoil to be used in landscape schemes. The specification lists the minimum set of parameters that should be analysed and provides recommended values for subsoil materials used in general landscaping. It also provides sampling information and guidance on the handling, management and storage of subsoil. The following table briefly explains each parameter in BS8601:2013 – Table 1 and why it should be tested. Soil texture
Measure of the proportions of sand, silt and clay in a soil as a percentage. Soil texture influences drainage and water storage and how the soil will respond to excavation, storage and cultivation
Loss on ignition (organic matter)
Subsoil should contain low levels of organic matter as it lies at a greater depth than topsoil, and is therefore at a greater risk of becoming anaerobic
Soil pH
A measure of alkalinity or acidity. Certain plants are suited to different pH ranges
Electrical conductivity and exchangeable sodium percentage
Measure of soil salinity and sodium concentrations (a salt harmful to plants)
Phytotoxic elements
Elements toxic to plants (Zn, Cu, Ni)
Physical contaminants
Physical contaminants, including plastic and sharps (e.g. glass)
Beyond the British Standard Although the Table 1 tests are all important, there are other parameters that you may be required to test to fully understand the suitability of a subsoil material. For example, the determination of permeability provides quantitative information about the drainage ability of the subsoil. Another common subsoil (and topsoil) test is a detailed particle size analysis (soil texture) whereby the portion of sand is further split into five size classes. A subsoil with a ‘wide particle size distribution’ (e.g. equal quantities of each of the five sands) could suffer from particle interpacking, thus resulting in poor drainage. Potential contaminants Section 4, Notes 2 and 3 cover potential contaminants (human health and the environment). Although a subsoil sample, in theory, could pass BS8601:2013 without analysis of such contaminants, very often these additional tests are required to comply with Planning Conditions (e.g. a site’s remediation strategy) or to satisfy the requirements of associated third parties (e.g. NHBC standards). I would strongly recommend always testing a subsoil for these contaminants as there are numerous ‘subsoil-type’ materials being offered which are in fact not suitable for most end-uses.

Business Tips
Getting the right people Part 1
Finding the right people to fill vacancies in your company is essential, Margaret McNeil explains how to advertise the position and whittle down the applicants for interview
Why is this important? ● The right people in the right roles
will be more productive and stay with you for longer.
● A poor decision may cause stress
and conflict within your team if the new recruit does not fit in.
● You’ll save time and resources.
Mistakes take time, money and energy. Then you have to do it all again!
Planning It’s worth spending time planning before you act. The first thing to do is create a job description and person specification or check the existing one still reflects what you are looking for. This will help you create an advert that attracts appropriate people. A job description lists the main tasks the applicant will be expected to do, and to what standard. The person specification shows what the applicant needs to be or have. Ideally you will have an ‘essential’ and a ‘desirable’ list of requirements. So you might say that having PA1 and PA6 is essential (i.e. only apply if you have this ticket) and a chainsaw licence is desirable (i.e. it will enhance the applicant’s chances if they have this qualification). If you list a statement such as ‘good plant knowledge’ as essential, you need to think what this actually means. Botanical names? Propagation methods? Site and soil requirements? And the knowledge of how many plants do you consider to be ‘good’ 20? 50? 100? If 26
March 2014
Onsite training.indd 26
this is one of your requirements, how will you test the applicant’s knowledge? Some recruiters take the applicant on a tour of the site and slip in a few questions about the plants on the site to check this out. Advertising Next comes advertising. When choosing where to advertise, consider the behaviours and habits of the type of person you are looking for. You might then decide to advertise in a trade journal rather than the local paper, for example. Send applicants the job description and person spec. That way they can see what is required and apply if they fit the criteria. When you have all the applications, it’s useful to have a tick list of your essentials and desirables, and for each applicant, complete the sheet. As soon as you get to a place where an applicant doesn’t get a tick in an
have been totally objective – your decisions have been based on fact. The next step is hard because you are going to meet the remaining applicants and it’s a hard not to let your feelings get in the way of a good decision. We all make assumptions about people from their name, address, handwriting etc. It’s important to ignore those feelings throughout the process. Having your lists and tick sheets will help prove to yourself and others that you are being fair. It will help if a rejected applicant rings you for feedback on why they were unsuccessful. Give yourself plenty of time to interview each candidate. Make a list of questions you need to ask, have the application and your notes and tick sheets with you. Remind yourself what you are looking for, and how much time you have spent so far – it will help you focus on getting it right.
The right people in the right roles will be more productive Part 2 in April: The interview ‘essential’ category, put them on the ‘declined’ pile. Remember, you have made a list of essential criteria – don’t waver! You will then have two piles – those that are declined and those that are still in the running. Email those that haven’t been successful and let them know why. This is easy at this stage – they didn’t meet one of your essentials, so they aren’t right for you. If you start to make exceptions, then your ‘essentials’ list is wrong, and you’ll have to make exceptions for others in the same way. Now work on the rest – depending how many applicants you have left, decline those with few or none of your desirable requirements. So far, you

It’s not often you will have a completely level site to survey. Most gardens have a gradient of some sort and may have existing steps or retaining walls for you to measure. These level changes are very important to understand and record as they will have a huge effect on the design process and therefore the likely cost of building your new design. In this article I am going to explain some simple techniques for measuring levels which do not require too much equipment and which are suitable for sites which are not too challenging. Next month we’ll look at some more advanced ways of doing a levels survey and what kit is available to help you. You need to have completed the basic survey before you start to measure the levels. You can write directly onto the survey or use a sheet of tracing paper as an overlay so that you keep the data separate. I like to use the overlay method with a coloured pencil to record the spot heights. Firstly you need to decide your datum point. This must be a fixed, well defined point which can easily be referred to in the future by others. (Most likely the contractor who is setting out the new garden during the build). It can be a manhole cover, drain cover or, my preferred point, the back door step. This datum will be the height to which your spot levels are related – either higher or lower. I like to work with the datum being 20.00; this usually gives you plenty of room to avoid negative figures or getting into three digits. A site which gains or loses more than 20 metres is no site for an amateur survey – get in a professional! Ideally I would like to create a grid of one metre squares across the garden and measure the spot height (level) at each point. Although this is time consuming it will allow a very good understanding of the site. It does require access to all areas which might be a problem in an overgrown or complicated garden.
Level changes are very important to understand and record as they will have a huge effect on the design process

Surveying This month Janine Pattison explains some simple techniques for measuring levels
Sites can be dangerous places when doing surveys
Other simple ways to calculate level changes across the site include using an existing structure like a fence or wall. If the structure is level you can measure from the top of the fence or wall to the ground at one metre intervals to reveal the gradient. Alternatively you can count the number of bricks and multiply by their size but remember to allow for the pointed joints for accuracy. A stepped fence can be used to work out the level change by measuring the height difference between each level section. This works well with fence panels but make sure they are all the same size and don’t suddenly change from 1.8m panels to 1.2m otherwise large inaccuracies will creep in. A simple technique which only requires a spirit level, a 2m long straight edge and some pegs will work very well particularly if there are two of you doing the survey. Lay the straight edge down and knock a peg into the ground at its end so that the straight edge is level under the spirit level. Measure the height difference from the straight edge to the ground. Move the straight
edge down the slope so that it is resting on the ground by the first peg. Repeat the procedure until the whole slope has been measured. Add up the height measurements to get the total fall across the site. You could repeat this several times across a garden if you needed to. As always, give yourself plenty of time, lots of warm clothing and try to pick a dry day that isn’t too windy.

How to excite your clients with wildflower landscapes The garden media have done a great job in the promotion of wildlife gardening and sustainable landscapes. We all now know the importance of attracting wildlife into our gardens, but how much do you think your clients really understand about wildflower landscapes? How can we get them more excited about the possibilities that wildflowers provide both aesthetically and from a practical gardening point of view? To include wildflowers within any planting scheme encourages biodiversity and a link to the surrounding green areas. A patch of wildflowers, big or small, will provide a natural habitat for birds, insects and animals to breed and feed. This in turn will improve pollination rates within the garden whilst also providing the ‘pretty’, not just in terms of the flowers but with the identification of butterflies, bees and birds making it a wonderful educational resource for the young and the old. For many, and in particular within smaller urban gardens, wildflowers can be associated with scruffy, unkempt gardening which goes against most domestic gardeners’ need to tame and control their outside space. However, wildflowers offer a great deal of scope with design and an ever changing height and look throughout the year. In a more manicured garden, a wildflower border can be a lovely juxtaposition to clipped hedges and perfect lawns. With the right seed mix you can provide a continual flowering season, the succession of bloom will extend from April to October and can be lengthened further with
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Wildflower Turf.indd 31
under-planting of spring bulbs. This offers a great opportunity to get creative with colour and design. Wildflower turf will grow up to about 75cm, so designed areas at the back of an existing manicured lawn look great set in drifts. Regularly mown paths through an area of the meadow allow access without disturbing the wildlife and a seating area immersed within wildflower would be perfect for a nature lover.
To include wildflowers within any planting scheme encourages biodiversity and a link to the surrounding green areas A field of wildflowers is perhaps the epitome of a natural garden and a difficult to manage hillside or an empty barren plot provides the perfect space for this look. If using a turf, the deep root bed acts as a very effective weed suppressant. The deep roots also mean that wildflowers are much more drought tolerant, regular watering is not required outside of establishment. Native wildflowers are incredibly hardy and will flourish throughout the seasons, having resilience to seasonal extremes and also pests and diseases that naturally occur within our gardens. We know that savings in money and time are a sure way to excite your clients, particularly for those with larger areas of garden to manage and maintain; wildflowers provide a cost saving solution. However it is important to get the delivery method right to guarantee yourself a happy client. Seeding a wildflower area can be fraught with problems, establishment can be very difficult and time consuming. If creating the meadow by laying turf, this can take place at any time of the year, bar snow or frost on the ground. Site preparation is
minimal, apart from ensuring a weed free site, soil amendments are rarely required. A meadow can be established within six to eight weeks, at which point there will be little to no maintenance needed throughout the summer months. One autumnal cut and removal of all arisings is all that is required. Some landscapers like to recommend a June cut as well and this can form part of an ongoing maintenance package with your client. They can then sit back and enjoy all that the wildflower brings to the garden and you can be confident that you have delivered a cost effective, low maintenance, biodiverse, creative solution to your client.
ABOUT JAMES HEWETSON-BROWN Wildflower Turf Ltd was founded in 2003 by James HewetsonBrown. With 20 years expertise in the lawn turf market, he wanted to find a solution to the problems faced when growing a meadow from seed. He went on to create the UK’s first, soil-less growing system for wildflowers and grasses to meet the demand for superior quality, ready-made wildflower meadows without the establishment problems associated with traditional seeding methods. Over the past 10 years, Wildflower Turf Ltd has continued to fine tune its seed mixes and techniques to produce a unique and high quality product for a number of uses from landscapes to green roofs. www.wildflowerturf.co.uk

What is BIM
and how might it affect you? Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been a hot topic for a number of years in the world of architecture. BIM projects are all about efficiency; the coordination of 2D drawings, 3D models and relevant data (Figure 1) together with collaboration; sharing information with other consultants and team members, to increase the consistency of information, reduce errors and reduce the overall project cost. More recently, the world of landscape design has started to look at the benefits of working with BIM workflows and on some larger projects lead contractors are specifying the use of BIM as one of the criteria for selection of landscape design consultants.
Figure 1 Above we see output from a typical example of a BIM design project, where we have a 3D model of a building and the site, from which 2D elevations, plans, site sections, construction diagrams and 3D visuals can be generated automatically, together with reports and schedules on what resources (hardscape elements, plants, etc.) have been used.
BACKGROUND
The move towards BIM over the last few years has come about as a result of work done by Patrick MacLeamy, CEO of HOK Architects, and his team, in 2005. The MacLeamy Curve (figure 2) charts the cost of decisions along the timeline of a construction project.
32
March 2014
Vectorworks.indd 32
Figure 2 It shows that decisions made early in a project (during design) can be made at lower cost and with greater effectiveness. Value engineering in projects is usually done when the bids come in. However, the
MacLeamy curve tells us that value engineering decisions, especially ones that affect the lifecycle costs of the project, should be moved to earlier in the project, when decisions are relatively inexpensive and the impact on the project can be far greater. Government estimates that moving towards BIM will provide savings of 20 per cent on project lifecycle costs. Therefore it is no surprise that Government is mandating this approach on its own construction projects from January 1 2016. However, commercial companies are not averse to saving money as well, and many lead contractors are specifying the use of BIM already on projects for which you might want to tender.

HOW CAN IT HELP YOU?
The first thing we need to understand is what BIM is and, just as importantly, what it isn’t BIM is not: ● A file format ● A software application (Revit, SketchUp or even Vectorworks) ● An information technology BIM is: ● A way of working ● Defined by workflows, which may vary from project to project ● Enabled by information technology
So, as with most things in life, it is as much about people and how they work as it is about technology. Even if you are not involved with large projects or working with other consultants on major bids, there are benefits and efficiencies to be gained from the BIM approach. Imagine creating your landscape design in such a way that all the 2D plans, sections and elevations of your design could be generated automatically from a single model. Furthermore, imagine all of those drawings being automatically updated when a design change is made. How much time would that save you? What if every element of your design had information attached, enabling you to analyse your design automatically for areas, volumes, slope, cut/
fill and planting lists? And again, what if all of these are automatically updated when design changes are made? How much time and money could that save you? That is what BIM can offer your design practice. For those of you working in the wider world of multi-disciplinary projects, with lead contractors, architects, structural engineers and mechanical and electrical engineers, BIM can provide further benefits. The ability to share the design work of all the teams working on a project and consolidate them into a single model can be quite revealing and save time and money for everyone. However, with different specialisms, different firms and different people all potentially using different design software, we need a way of sharing and exchanging designs.
THE WORLD OF OPEN BIM Open BIM is a universal approach to the collaborative design, construction and operation of buildings based on open standards and workflows. It is an initiative of buildingSMART and several leading software vendors using the open buildingSMART Data Model. Vectorworks is a member of buildingSMART and so are most of the suppliers of landscape design software — Autodesk, Trimble (SketchUp), Bentley, Graphisoft and many others. Open BIM thrives on the use of a universal file format, IFC, which enables the sharing of not just geometry, but also data between different design applications. Quite often, when we want to share information with people in a way that we
are sure they will be able to read, but not change, we will create a PDF document. With a PDF file, it doesn’t matter what software has been used to create the information, Microsoft Word or Excel, Apple Pages or Numbers for example, we can share the PDF safe in the knowledge that the intended recipient will be able to read it, but not change it. The analogy that is often used about IFC is that it is the PDF of the design world. Sharing models and information in this way enables us to greatly reduce the number of unbudgeted changes and clashes which typically occur when we start work on-site, helping towards the Government’s target of 20 per cent cost saving.
CONCLUSION The latest NBS BIM survey suggests that 39 per cent of organisations in the construction sector are already using BIM, with that figure set to rise to 77 per cent in a year’s time. Therefore, whether BIM is right for you now, or maybe at some time in the future, more knowledge will help you make the best decision on BIM for your business and not put your business at a disadvantage. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

LET’S HEAR IT FROM...
Let’s Hear it From...
Richard Miers This month, we hear from garden designer Richard Miers, who tells us about his career, his aspirations to create a show garden at Chelsea and who he admires within the industry
When and how did you first get into the garden design industry?
Even as a child I was always fascinated with plants, growing things and gardens. I rather fell into running health clubs after university which, whilst ultimately not being me, at least was very useful training in keeping tricky clients happy! Then at 26 realised I could combine my passion for gardens and interest in aesthetics in garden design so went back to college. What training did you undertake to become a garden designer?
I took a year’s diploma in Garden Design at Merrist Wood College, and worked at the Fulham Palace Garden Centre which was then run by a charity called Fairbridge. There is now a neat little circle as I’ve just been made a patron of the Fairbridge Garden and Arts Society which raises money for and promotes the Fairbridge programme of the Prince’s Trust. However most of what I learnt was during seven years as Arne Maynard’s right hand man. I set up on my own in 2005.
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Let's hear it from 2.indd 35
Do you have a ‘style’ – would people know instantly that a finished project is your work?
Not consciously, as the existing house and landscape and the client brief lead the design process. However, I do like using structure in a garden, so in the winter months there is still interest and intrigue in the bones of the garden. I then soften this with other plants the rest of the year. I also have my favourite plants, and plant and colour combinations which all lend themselves to appearing to be a style. This was proved by a friend of mine who unknowingly visited a garden I had designed and asked my client correctly if it was a Richard Miers garden! She described it as ‘classic contemporary’ which is a label I’m happy with. Do you purely design, or are you involved in choosing landscapers and project management on your designs?
I like to follow the process all the way through to the end of the construction and then beyond as the garden fills out and evolves.

Let’s Hear it From...
Do you present your designs by CAD or freehand drawings?
1
I design on SketchUp which I love to use as you can lose yourself for hours in a virtual garden world. It’s especially lovely at this time of year with the cold and the rain lashing against your windows and I’m sitting there imagining myself in the summer with, for example, the scent of roses, warm sun on my back and what it would be like to be using the garden I’m designing. What are your views on industry associations? Are you a member of the SGD, and if not do you intend to become one?
They can be very useful, however I am only a preregistered member of the SGD as I haven’t had the time to submit my application. Where do most of your leads come from?
2
All my leads come by word of mouth and recommendations from previous clients, architects and interior designers I have worked with. Is most of your work in the same area or do you work nationally?
I never know when the next project might be, and work throughout the country.
Do you get involved in international work?
Yes, I have designed a landscape in Moscow, and a garden in France. I represented the UK in the Gardening World Cup in Japan in 2012 and I’m currently working on a garden in Sardinia. Do you plan to get more involved in the world of show gardens, such as the yearly RHS shows?
I’d love to do a Chelsea garden but am waiting for the right sponsor with the right budget to come along! What are your views on industry events and shows such as FutureScape?
Garden design can be a bit solitary unless you work in one of the few large practices, so I find events such as FutureScape very useful for keeping up with contacts and friends in the industry. It is always fascinating to see new innovations and keep up with new techniques. What are the current trends in garden design?
I’m a designer not a social commentator and really just focus on my own work! But I don’t live in a bubble and I’m aware that people are moving away from pure herbaceous perennial beds and using shrubs again, which is good.

Let’s Hear it From...
I like to follow the process to the end of the construction and then beyond as the garden fills out and evolves Which garden designers do you admire?
I admire many but in particular my old boss Arne Maynard, Tom Stuart-Smith, and Jack Wirtz. Which landscape companies do you admire?
Gardenlink, MarmaladeJam and Landform Consultants. Are there any landscape contract companies that you would like to work with who you haven’t already done so to date?
Landform Consultants. Would your preference be designing small town gardens or large country ones?
I like the variety of doing both, the space and freedom of the country and then the intensity of a town garden where everything has to work so hard to be included.
6
Do you have any unfulfilled career ambitions?
Designing a Chelsea garden... What are your future plans for your business?
I’ve recently partly moved back to London and will be focusing on procuring some more London projects.
7
What do you like to do to relax when you’re not working?
I do love to garden and visit other gardens and it never feels like work. I also like visiting art exhibitions and museums and playing tennis.

Catherine was previously an IT manager and moved into Garden Design nine years ago. She studied design at the English Gardening School and the RHS DIP Hort at Hadlow College. Since then she has created award winning gardens and featured on BBC TV. Catherine creates each garden individually, in response to the client needs and the characteristics of the garden, using an appropriate intelligent design. All her gardens tend to have a strong organic structure and an abundance of planting to suit the site conditions. Wherever possible, gardens are made sustainable, using local materials, encouraging wildlife and vegetable growing.

99% pure New Zealand – small but beautifully formed. This dull shady London back garden has been transformed into a haven for its New Zealand owners
his garden was like many other London gardens: small, overlooked, and exposed to noisy traffic on the surrounding streets. It was further compromised by a difficult north facing aspect and poor soil. The challenge for me was to turn it into a family friendly garden which had a degree of privacy, and was bright, open and contemporary. In addition, the owners, originally from New Zealand, wanted a bit of their New Zealand homeland in their back garden, along with a vegetable patch. In answer to this brief, I decided to create a modern urban space using chunky wooden sleepers for raised beds, smooth decking and grey limestone paving, and to plant almost all New Zealand natives, with just the exception of the vegetables, an apple tree and herbs such as thyme, sage, rosemary and bay.
One of the first tasks was to repair the crumbling soil retaining wall along the back boundary of the garden, so that the trellis screening could be secured to it. The trellis, made from horizontal treated softwood batons, adds height to the wall and provides the much needed privacy without blocking out light. I designed the garden with three levels, in order to break up the space and to create visual interest. The lowest level provides a cosy, secluded sunken corner paved with soft grey-blue limestone. This serves as a dining and entertaining space with power, lights and a BBQ space. The grey-blue limestone paving was also used to pave the area around the house. Two 3m by 3m decking platforms made of southern pine, provide wide, child-friendly steps down to the sunken corner. Subtle spike spot lights enhance the rest of the garden for evening use. March 2014

Designing the garden at a 45 degree angle to the house also made it seem much bigger. Planting beds made from sleepers run along the garden walls; these beds vary in height from two sleepers to four sleepers, and also double up as seats. The clients did not want to clutter the garden with tables and chairs, so an additional small bench was built against the back wall. To increase the sense of enclosure and privacy, I planted abundantly with large specimens of New Zealand native plants. Many of these plants are dramatic, architectural specimens to complement the contemporary uncluttered theme. The colour palate of the planting was limited to mostly greens and silver, with a few purple/yellow shrubs for contrast. Dramatic specimens include the large tree fern Dicksonia Antarctica, and the phormiums. Shade-loving ferns grow happily in the northfacing garden. A special soil mix of composted bark and topsoil was created for the fern beds, to ensure that they would thrive, and a leaky hose irrigation system was installed to provide enough water in the dry London environment. Two Kiwi fruit vines, strawberries, some vegetables and herbs were planted in the raised bed nearest the seating area, which is the sunniest part of the garden. The plants used in this garden are all weather hardy for London, although the cyatheas (the smaller tree ferns) need eece

protection in a particularly cold, wet, windy winter. Shrubs such as astelia, coprosma, lophomyrtus and pseudopanax are known to be frost tender, which means that they may need protection in areas of the country that are prone to heavy frost pockets. Some of the other shrubs, such as Libertia ixioides, and phormiums will survive very cold winters provided the soil is free draining. Pittosporum will survive a few degrees below zero, as long as they have had a good summer to ripen the wood. 1 Planting detail. 2-4 Sketchup design plans. 5 The garden before work took place. 6 One corner of the garden showcasing the decking and the raised planters containing shrubs and cyathea smithii.

INSTANT IMPACT Land Design Partnership Year round interest was the main request for this award-winning townhouse garden
T
his is a compact townhouse garden on the outskirts of Canterbury city centre. The house is part of a relatively new Berkeley Homes development set in a crescent around a central green; the rear gardens suffer from limited sunlight due not only to the north easterly aspect but the height of surrounding buildings which enclose the space further. The client’s brief was for a garden that looked good all year round from both the garden and the house (i.e. to provide a view). She wanted instant impact – including light and water – to disguise the existing fencing, and for it to be low maintenance. There was a lack of direct sunlight so the garden needed to be as light as possible to compensate for this. The scope of works was to include fencing, paving, a water feature, soil remediation, planting, lighting and maintenance. SITE ISSUES As with any small site, organisation and access can be tricky, but with careful planning these issues were overcome. The main design problem, which I had not really visualised, was the drop in levels. Whilst I had allowed for one step down from the terrace to accommodate the falls, the resulting level of the remainder of the garden became very

flat and two dimensional, and the soil and mulch washing over the marble paving would have been unsightly, so we chose to contain the box parterres in planters at the same level as the terrace which maximised the soil depth and was more aesthetically pleasing as it balanced out the levels. Furthermore the falls dictated a drain which we tucked out of site directly in front of the garage door, thus not interfering with the clean lines of the marble paving. The final issue which our client had to contend with was the neighbouring cats using her ‘Zen Garden’ aggregate as kitty litter, so with the addition of plenty more

cobbles and an increase in size of aggregate from the original 10-20mm to 60-80mm the cats finally left her new garden unblemished. As I was the designer as well as project manager it was not a problem sourcing materials, especially when you have such a dream client as Lesley who gave me plenty of feedback at every step of the way to ensure we got it right first time. Lesley changed her mind from the originally proposed granite paving to marble in order to attract more light to the garden, which despite the cost was most definitely the right design decision. 44

Whilst dirt does show up quickly on the pale slabs, it’s an easy garden to maintain – and LDP have been maintaining anyway. 1 Ambient lighting sets off the garden for evening enjoyment. 2 Acer Crimson Queen and Pinus mugo Mops contrast well with the silver of the water feature. 3 Alliums bobbing above the parterres bring late spring colour. 4 Grasses and topiary provide texture and structural interest. 5 The garden before the LDP magic. 6 …and afterwards, transformed with marble paving and selected shrubs and perennials. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

his was a local project for PC Landscapes that was won on a tender process and included just about everything you would expect on a project of this size. The costs were over £250K. The brief from the client and Andy Sturgeon’s office were one and the same, a total regrade and construction of the entire area, the original hardscape areas were demolished with only specific planting areas and tree lines kept and even those were thinned and trimmed. The rear garden was undertaken first with a large amount of excavations for the swimming pool and below ground ‘Milton Ring’ Chamber that housed the water feature pump equipment and circuitry. We installed two 8000 litre water harvesting tanks and connected these to the house rainwater pipes. The walls were a major feature and were clad using Horsham stone. This was a time consuming element as we needed to ensure consistency of stone size and placement in order to achieve the right look. The walls were capped with Yorkstone all of which was specially ordered at the start of the project due to long lead times and radial dimensions specified. Corten steel was used for path and driveway edging and the courtyard squares with Vande Moortel paving setts, providing a great contrast to the Yorkstone paving. Coordination between the swimming pool contractor, water feature specialist and irrigation contractor was a necessary component in order to keep a work flow balance throughout the project.
The lighting creates a great feel to the garden in the evenings and really accentuates the hard and soft features Additional topsoil was imported for the main lawn areas and all the borders were dug with recycled waste compost. All the plants were supplied by Andy Sturgeon, and PC Landscapes set out and planted all the plants as well as mulching the borders. We installed a Light Symphony lighting system as specified which creates a great feel to the garden in the evenings and really accentuates the hard and soft features. These comprised of 120 LED lights mostly Collingwood and Hunza. We liaised closely with the client and designer to achieve the final result on a project we enjoyed bringing to life.

NURSERY NEWS Boningale Ltd acquires Worfield Gardens
Boningale Ltd, one of the UK’s largest nurseries and environmental horticultural specialists, is further expanding operations after acquiring fellow Shropshire nursery Worfield Gardens. The Albrighton company, which currently supplies primarily the construction and horticultural industry with more than one million home-grown plants every year, said adding the Bridgnorth-based
Worfield Gardens to its portfolio meant it could expand its plant range and customer base in line with its strategic long term plans. Worfield Gardens, which was founded in the 1950s by Sir Oliver and Lady Leese, is renowned for the high quality production and breeding of alpines, heathers, and perennials. Boningale completed the purchase of the company this month for an undisclosed sum. Matt Mott, Boningale Ltd.’s Managing Director, said: “Worfield Gardens, which operates over a five acre site, has long had an excellent reputation for production of high quality nursery stock. Their range is the perfect complement to our existing portfolio of container
and specimen plants. “We are delighted to welcome the Worfield Gardens team into the Boningale family. We are all very excited to be able to roll out our expansion plans and develop our portfolio of stock lines together; this should enhance the offering from both businesses to our customers, who will have access to an even greater variety of plant stock and services.” This acquisition continues Boningale Ltd ’s objectives of expansion and diversification within the horticultural industry and follows the recent launch of its Greensky department into the green roof sector. www.boningale.co.uk
Stolen specimen olive trees returned Villaggio Verde, the only UK company specialising solely in growing and supplying olive trees throughout the UK were distraught when seven specimens, reserved for their show garden at The RHS Malvern Spring Festival, were stolen in broad daylight. The stolen olive trees were between 100 and 200 years old.The theft occurred at 12.30pm on Monday 27 January 2014 from the site in Ledbury, and the nursery suspected they were stolen to order. www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Nursery News.indd 51
Thankfully, the rare and highly valuable trees (with a street value of £10,000) were returned to the nursery under mysterious circumstances on February 17, following a campaign online and in the media drawing attention to the unusual nature of the trees and their relatively conspicuous theft. www.villaggioverde.co.uk
NURSERY NOTES
Here at Agrumi we are once again preparing a large custom topiary commission for one of the UK’s biggest family theme parks. This time we’re creating a life sized Victorian horse and cart, with around 12 classic Victorian figures alongside. Our in-house topiary sculptor is working flat-out soldering, planting and weaving, often working on several sculptures at once! Agrumi can create almost any topiary sculpture up to 3m tall, whilst also supplying stock topiary items. We’ve currently got some lovely topiary hearts in stock, which would make a fantastic gift, or a unique garden feature. Take a look at our new website www.topiaryart.co.uk for more information and for images of some of our past creations.

Plantsman’s PLOT A round-up of trees and plants available at some of the country’s best nurseries To appear in Plantsman’s Plot, please send your plant of the month, details and image to editor@pro-landscaper.co.uk Do you have a problem area? Acidic, moist soils with low light levels? Struggling to find something interesting to fill that gap? Then this is the plant for you – Leucothoe ‘Scarletta’. A startling evergreen shrub with long slim evergreen leaves emerging red to bronze, and aging to glossy green. The new red foliage is continued for at least six months of the year and is dense in appearance. With the onset of autumn the foliage also takes on tints of dark wine, adding to the appeal. Insignificant white flowers are freely produced in the spring. Plant amongst other winter interest plants to really accentuate the glory of this glossy evergreen. www.provendernurseries.co.uk
With the coming of spring the rose of winter announces the new season with a stunning display of exquisite dark red, double flowers framed by handsome, polished evergreen leaves. Camellia japonica ‘Mathotiana’ is not only very beautiful, it is also reliable and easy to grow. The formal, pyramidal crown retains its shape and once the plant is established requires very little maintenance. Additionally, the mature size only reaches four metres, making it an excellent choice for the smaller garden. For best performance plant in acidic, humus rich soil along with light shade or morning sun. www.majestictrees.co.uk
Forsythia x intermedia is a cheery ornamental shrub with clusters of bright yellow flowers which bloom in the spring and last two to three weeks. This fast growing, adaptable plant is easy to care for, and well-loved by bees and other insects. Border forsythias can grow a little wild if left to their own devices, so annual pruning is recommended. www.agrumi.co.uk

A medium sized, bushy evergreen shrub, Aucuba japonica ‘Crotonifolia’ will thrive in areas of semi to full shade. A favourite amongst plantsmen for its striking, yellow spotted foliage and bright red berries that appear in autumn, the spotted laurel is a hardy plant that gives fantastic, all year round interest. Commonly used as a specimen plant or dotted in hedgerows, this slow growing evergreen will grow well in situations where many other plants would struggle, including areas prone to drying out, salt-laden winds and urban pollution. www.colesnurseries.co.uk

Hawthorn is traditionally planted bare root and the bare root season is coming to an end shortly. Readyhedge can supply hawthorn hedging in metre long troughs nearly all year round. These plants will establish quicker and give more density quicker than the traditional bare root whip. Readyhedge
supply plants in 100cm long lengths that are well feathered and meshed together, to give a good start to the hedge. They also form a more impenetrable barrier from the point of planting. They are supplied 100120cm tall 100cm long. www.readyhedgeltd.com
Camellia sasanqua Rosea was introduced in the early 1800s and a native of China and Japan, this acid loving small evergreen tree is grown at Barcham as a full standard. It is better planted in the south facing gardens of southern England where it thrives to make a small tree about five metres in height. Glossy evergreen leaves are beautifully contrasted with luscious pink fragrant flowers in both autumn and spring. Generally, the hotter the preceding summer, the better the performance. It is also best to position the plant in a sheltered spot, protecting it against cold winter winds. Mature height: 5-7m. www.barcham.co.uk
One of the delights of the late winter/early spring garden is catkins in their myriad forms. These come on trees such as birch and alder, through to hazels and cobnuts, down to shrubs such as Stachyurus and Corylopsis. This range of scale means there is something for every situation. To consider the various options contact www.thornhayes-nursery.co.uk

With its magnificent silvery blue foliage, Picea pungens ‘Glauca Globosa’ is one of the most sought after dwarf conifers. This dense compact conifer can be used to great effect in rock gardens and containers, as a freestanding specimen, when grouped with other different coloured dwarf conifers, or even as an architectural plant when grown as a quarter standard. Although best grown in full sun for maximum colouring, this hardy evergreen plant grows in pretty much any soil and is definitely a conifer to show those customers who, unjustifiably, regard conifers as boring! www.theplantationnursery.co.uk
Skimmia japonica Rubella is a popular male Skimmia, which gives a great display all through the winter and into March and grows on most soils. It’s a compact evergreen grower, not making much more than a metre in height when mature. It performs best when planted in semi shade, but has a tendency to go a bit chloritic (yellowish) when planted in full sun. For planting in full sun use Skimmia x confusa Kew Green. www.palmstead.co.uk March 2014 55

Coles Nurseries A Family Business Coles Nurseries was established in 1913 by James Coles with the purchase of an eight acre site in Evington, Leicester. Business was difficult in the early years; with the outbreak of the War, Coles were required to grow mostly vegetables, with the production of nursery stock kept to minimum. As this restriction passed, the company began full production of retail plants for high end gardens in and around Leicester. Business continued in this way, with production steadily increasing, until the late 1940s, when the decision was made by the then owners William and Fred Coles (James’ sons) to make the move into wholesale production. Since then the Company has gone from strength to strength and now operates across seven production sites throughout Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, totalling over 500 acres, with a 100 strong workforce, making Coles the largest amenity grower in the UK. Specialising in amenity supply,
Coles DPS.indd 58
we now have one of the most comprehensive ranges of 2, 3, 5 and 10 litre shrubs, and bare-root, root-ball and container grown trees up to five metres in the UK. We currently grow in excess 2.4 million shrubs and 1.2 million trees at capacity, and have an annual turnover of around six million pounds. Stock is delivered nationwide through our in-house fleet of delivery vehicles, driven by fully trained, experienced plant handlers. Throughout the past 101 years Coles has remained a family business; managing director James Coles is the great-grandson of the James Coles who started the company all those years ago. Aided by a progressive production, sales and marketing team, and through the practise of continually investing in internal production methods and infrastructure, the Company is well positioned to remain a leading light in the horticultural industry as we move into our second century of trading.

Air-Pots We have recently completed construction of a new production area designed to hold over 4500 Air-Pot trees, in girth sizes up to 20cm+. The trees, available all year round in a range of sizes and species, are becoming more and more popular with the amenity market due to their higher survival rate after planting, when compared to container, root-ball or bare-root alternatives. Air-Pots encourage an incredibly fibrous root system and eliminate root-circling by ‘AirPruning’; the cone shaped design of the Air-Pot restricts woody growth, encourages even root distribution and dramatically reduces losses after installation. Currently available in Air-Pots from Coles are varieties of Acer, Betula, Carpinus, Fagus, Pinus, Pyrus, Quercus, Sorbus and Tilia. C5’s C5’s (or five litre) shrubs are another area Coles have recently expanded into. Bridging the gap between our two litres (used for mass planting) and 10 litres (used as a specimen shrub), the fives offer you the chance to purchase a shrub that is three quarters the size of a 10 litre, for around half the price! We currently have over 42,000 five litre shrubs, grasses and herbaceous in stock. The National Plant Specification Drawn up by plant specifiers and growers then compiled by the Horticultural Trades Association, the National Plant Specification (NPS) is an important vehicle to aid the successful selection and delivery of plant material to the UK landscape industry. The NPS sets out the size (height, spread, girth of stem) and form (container, clear stem height, branches, breaks) for the most widely available varieties of trees and shrubs from UK Nurseries. To share and promote this expertise, Coles have gained accreditation for their own bespoke training course to NVQ Level 2 (QCF) entitled “An Awareness of the National Plant Specification – Trees and Shrubs”. The one-day course, delivered by a qualified Horticultural Trainer from the Coles staff, comprises theoretical and practical elements and provides the candidates with first-hand examples of stock at Coles Nurseries. For more information or to make a booking, please contact Vince Edwards – info@colesnurseries.co.uk.
Coles DPS.indd 59
Staff Training Realising the importance of investing in people and internal development, since 2010 we have been running bespoke, departmental training modules for all staff involved with propagation, retail or production of field grown or containerised trees and shrubs. Developed in-house and administered by our site managers and in-house assessors, the modules cover elements of plant handling, knowledge and production, pest and disease management and machinery maintenance. Progress through these modules is marked by three ranks; Nurseryman, Craftsman and Senior Craftsman, and is linked to the company’s pay structure. We are currently in the process of seeking full accreditation for this programme, meaning that upon completion staff members would gain a recognised qualification, something that over 70 per cent have said they would prefer to work toward over pay increases. Full accreditation would also mean that we could train staff members of external organisations, on Nursery sites, sharing our knowledge with the industry.
Green Production Over the past few years we have made several changes to our production methods to reduce our negative impact on the environment. In 2006 we constructed an award winning 10 million gallon reservoir at our largest production site in Gaddesby; the reservoir is naturally fed and has resulted in the 250 acre site now being completely self sufficient in water use. We use ‘Compost Tea’; a microbe-rich solution made by ‘brewing’ quality compost in water for 24 hours, which multiplies the population of micro-organisms many times over, producing a light brown solution (hence the product’s name) that can be applied via sprayers or irrigation systems, across the majority of our shrub production. We incorporate around 30 per cent wood fibre into our compost mix to reduce our peat usage, and use IPM (Integrated Pest Management) across our entire production. These changes drastically reduce our reliance on harmful and costly chemicals.
MEET THE TEAM James Coles Managing Director James oversees all aspects of company business, and is currently the BALI Midlands Regional Chairman as well as a member of the HTA’s Ornamentals Management Committee. Mark Cade Operations Director Mark looks after the production side of the company, as well as sitting on the HTA’s Technical Committee in an advisory capacity, and on the HDC’s Nursery Stock Panel. Andrew Garner Sales Manager Andrew has been with Coles for some 35 years, and in his role as Sales Manager oversees the sales process from start to finish.
Gareth Ashenhurst Amenity Sales Executive Our Amenity Sales Advisor with 25 years’ experience, Gareth handles some of our largest accounts, providing a personal and advisory service to our amenity clients. Vince Edwards Key Account Manager Vince handles our new customer enquiries, as well as helping to represent the company at trade shows and with client visits.
Harry Hitchcock Marketing Manager Harry manages Coles’ marketing strategy, public relations and events organisation, as well as representing the company at external forums and trade shows.

Dingle Nurseries Dingle Nurseries, a wholesale trade nursery situated in Powys in Mid Wales, was started by the Joseph family on a small hill farm in 1968. They found at first that it was much easier to grow plants than it was to sell them, and from this they learnt to place great value on customers – a viewpoint that has been retained to the present day. In the 1990s the nursery doubled in size, and has since doubled in size again, allowing the nursery to develop its large scale tree production; it now occupies 300 acres, including 30 acres of container trees and shrubs. The nursery also has a wide range of specimen and exotic plants, including 500 year old olive trees, hardy plants, tree ferns, bamboos and topiary shapes and covers everything from alpines and bare rooted hedging whips to semi-mature trees and shrubs. Dingle Nurseries sells around two million container shrubs, two million forest trees, 50,000 feathered and 40,000 standard trees including 5,000 standards in containers each year. The quality of the trees is so good that any surplus stock can be sold to Holland and Germany. Orders can be made online, over the phone or
by visiting the nursery. Due to the extremely competitive nature of the amenity market, Dingle Nurseries is especially aware that they have to keep their prices very keen, while still offering outstanding quality. Service is equally important; when a customer makes a request, however impossible it may seem at first the nursery tries its hardest to achieve the required result. The production is managed by Dafydd Joseph, the son of Kath and Andy Joseph – the nursery founders. Sales and transport are managed by Chris Andrew. Chris manages the transport as well as sales, so Dingle Nurseries can be very flexible in delivery arrangements. There are around 85 members of staff at the nursery, this includes full time staff along with additional seasonal staff. The key staff at the nursery are very experienced, all having worked at the site for over 10 years. All began working for the company in their late teens, so are therefore still young and enthusiastic. Dingle Nurseries keeps an enormous volume and variety of stock, this allows them to complete deliveries that contain quite complex landscaping jobs in a time scale of a couple of
days. As production is increased, Dingle will be able to reduce prices further in order to increase its share of the market. The unique selling point is really the huge range of stock available at the nursery, which is sent at very competitive prices, and at very short notice. Highly experienced staff have an excellent understanding of what is needed by the amenity market customer. Throughout the rest of 2014, Dingle Nurseries aims to increase production, especially in larger shrubs and standard containerised trees. There are also plans to terrace a 10 acre hillside for a new container area. Dingle Nurseries also supplies plants for some of the major UK flower shows. The nursery supplied plants for Harry and David Rich from Rich & Sons Landscapes, who won a Gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013 with their Artisan Garden Un Garreg – One Stone.

Statement of intent We will NOT import trees and sell to customers for immediate planting into the UK landscape. All imported trees will be held on the nursery for one full growing season and subjected to rigorous inspection for pest and disease. This includes systematic and regular DEFRA visits to the nursery.
Tree health, pest & disease control In addition to the routine pest and disease control programme implemented on the nursery over 15,000 trees across the entire species range are annually, randomly and independently examined for physiological health using leaf fluorescence, chlorophyll content and cell electrolyte leakage. This report is published and available for public inspection.
Audit trail Every batch of trees imported onto the nursery has its own Batch Number. This number provides a complete audit trail both from supplying nursery and out into the UK landscape once the trees are sold. PLEASE NOTE: Not all trees in white containers are Barcham Trees. It cannot, therefore, be assumed that buying a tree in a white container ensures that the rigorous bio-security measures outlined here have been applied or that the tree purchased has not been imported for immediate resale and planting into the UK landscape. If in doubt do ask.

Landscaping for children
to ensure a soft landing Whether a school playground, a play area at a leisure centre or a public recreational space, thought needs to go into how to engineer a landscape that is safe for children to enjoy. Robbie Craven, Head of Research & Development at TigerTurf UK provides an insight into the important considerations that need to be taken into account as designers consider a new playground surface
Many actions can be taken to reduce the risk of injury in the playground, such as increasing adult supervision, but it’s important to look further than behavioural habits and into how a playground can be engineered to be safer. In today’s context, where children are surrounded by technology, it’s more important than ever that they are encouraged to learn and play outdoors in a safe environment. Landscape designers should consider this at the inception of a build and in refurbishment scenarios. TigerTurf originally developed safe play systems in New Zealand and Australia, and with continued success, this knowledge and development has been adopted into the UK market. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has estimated there are approximately 40,000 injuries to children on playgrounds which www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Tiger Turf.indd 63
result in a hospital visit each year. Injury at an early age can cause long-term health issues. The contributing factors to risk of injury range from poor playground design and unsuitable equipment for the intended age group, to incorrect installation and poor maintenance of the environment. Safety is a topic that understandably drives strong emotions; working with manufacturers to consider a wider range of outdoor surface solutions is a way to reduce the risk of injuries during play. Children are habitually prone to minor injuries like grazed knees, but it’s the potentially life threatening injuries that designers and architects need to be aware of. Head Injury Criterion (HIC) is a key consideration relating to the impact attenuation of a particular surface and calculates the maximum height from which a life threatening injury would not be expected to occur. When a surface includes HIC considerations, playground designers know that the fall height from equipment included should not exceed the critical fall height of the surface. HIC varies depending on the surface itself, its specification and its use. However, when considered as part of the design process, it can help to minimise the risk of critical head injuries and skull fractures. Synthetic surfaces can improve safety standards, and there are a wide variety of options available.
Choice of yarn within artificial turf surfaces for children is important as they need to be durable and soft to touch. Infill and shock pads are also crucial components of a synthetic grass system which enhance safety credentials. Playground safety is not only a welfare concern; facility managers of leisure centres, recreational areas or schools could incur lawsuits for negligence if they fail to ensure that playgrounds are safe. It is equally important that education landscape designers aren’t hampered by health and safety constraints that can appear very restrictive. Children also need to enjoy social interaction and physical games in an imaginative environment. As a result of the influence technology currently has on society, playground games aren’t as influential as they used to be. Consequently, no matter what the location, creating environments that encourage children to work together and grow socially, emotionally and physically is important. To engineer safe playgrounds, we recommend designers work with surface manufacturers capable of offering bespoke solutions. Once a surface is in place, equipment that is safe to be installed and used in compliance of HIC figures should then be considered. Architects need to be sure that they are handing over a top class facility that will be safe for children to enjoy for years to come. www.stmworld.co.uk/artificial-turf-playgroundsurfaces-sports-pitches/ March 2014

LAZYLAWN
roots
Artificial grass installations often require an underlay, either for safety, stability, weed suppression or ground levelling. We asked artificial grass suppliers if and when they would recommend the use of an underlay for their installations
PERFECTLY GREEN
LazyLawn recommends our 25mm interlocking foam underlay be used on installations where a fall height is required, due to play equipment or similar. This is only when the fall height rating exceeds that of our artificial grass, which itself generally has a fall height of 1.2m without underlay. It is also possible to layer up our underlay to achieve higher critical fall height values. Our foam underlay is mainly used on school and local authority projects, but we also use it when installing over tarmac, concrete and on roof garden projects, such as roof terraces for example, to aid drainage and allow for a smooth laying surface. There is no need to install foam underlay on most landscaping projects as a full depth sub base should be installed and contoured for the most realistic looking lawn result.
Perfectly Green’s PlayPad range is an extremely versatile selection of artificial grass underlays, achieving a maximum critical fall height of 2.8m when used in conjunction with our highly popular Norfolk artificial grass. We have also launched an 8mm foam underlay for 2014, especially suited to irregular surfaces. Our thin white foam features a built in weed membrane and is incredibly easy to install, simply being rolled in place over a firm surface. It is great for installation on areas such as roof gardens, decking, patio’s and uneven surfaces. The foam will drastically reduce the time and cost of installation as well as providing a comfortable, cushioned feel underfoot.

HI-TECH TURF
BLADES GRASS There are many applications where we recommend the use of underlay – or shock pad – prior to laying artificial grass. The most common being in schools and play areas, where there is a need to provide additional cushioning underneath play equipment to meet critical fall heights. The second application would be when laying artificial grass on to hard-standing areas, perhaps where the base isn’t as level as it could be, such as over paving slabs. In this case a 5mm underlay should be sufficient to smooth out the undulations, preventing the grass from settling in cracks or indentations. We would never recommend using underlay or shockpad in place of constructing a solid, free draining sub-base. We have seen this practice, and it is corner-cutting at its worst. This can often lead to long term problems with drainage and settlement of the grass over time.
Ben Monk, Director of Blades Grass WWW.BLADESGRASS.CO.UK

March 2014
Artificial Grass.indd 66
At Hi-Tech Turf we recommend our HT Safe Play Shock Pads for use underneath play equipment where a critical fall height is required or over a children’s play area if a tarmac or concrete surface is being covered. Each pad is 1.1m x 1.5m and are manufactured from scrap cross-linked polyethylene foam which would otherwise be going to land fill. The pads absorb impact on compression and are free draining. Pads should be laid underneath a sand filled artificial grass with a minimum pile height of 24mm. Shock pad installation under a general, everyday lawn would not be cost effective.
For decking installations we recommend our 6mm foam underlay available in 1m wide rolls, this provides a smooth surface for grass installation and prevents any decking ridges showing through. A sports pitch application over tarmac or concrete would require a 6mm rubber underlay to reduce wear on the latex of the grass and to provide a smooth, even surface for grass installation and ball control.
Paula Rodham, Hi-Tech Turf Ltd WWW.HITECHTURF.CO.UK
TIGERTURF For a typical garden, the vast majority of artificial turf installations will see the existing turf cut away and the resulting exposed ground prepared and levelled. In most cases, this would then be followed by a layer of sharp sand, followed by a geotextile layer before the chosen turf is fitted. The role of a geotextile underlay layer is essentially to act as a filter between the turf and the subsoils. If the water table rises, it is important to prevent silts from coming up onto the layer of turf. Equally, it is important to prevent any material sitting on the layer of turf itself to pass down into the groundworks below, a geotextile layer will prevent this. It will also stop weeds from penetrating through the surface of the turf – which can not only spoil aesthetics, but can also limit the lifespan of the surface. A geotextile layer remains permeable so prevents water build-up, whilst safeguarding the surface from any unwanted growth. In exceptional circumstances of particularly uncommon groundworks or poor drainage however, it may be that the position of the underlay has to be altered to maximise performance.

Artificial Grass
EASIGRASS
TRULAWN
Easigrass will always recommend that a shock pad underlay is used, except in pet-friendly environments where the criteria changes. This is for sanitary reasons, to avoid animal urine staying in the small pockets of the shock pad and creating a smell and bacteria. In the main, easigrass teams use an 18mm shock pad underlay for all domestic installations and 25mm for schools as standard. Each of the shock pad underlay thicknesses have a maximum critical fall height. The easigrass shock pad is made from recycled foam with a sheet of weed membrane on top, helping with the drainage of rain water as well as protection against weeds.
For a domestic artificial grass installation using an underlay such as shock pad, for example, isn’t necessary. A quality artificial grass product with a decent pile height and weight will ensure a high standard of appearance and a nice feel underfoot. What is absolutely essential is a good installation; by this I mean proper measures are taken to prepare the base. We recommend installers lay a base of aggregate in addition to sharp sand. Many installers will only lay a base of sharp sand, but this isn’t enough. Of course where schools and nurseries are concerned the use of shock pad, a fall cushioning substrate, may be necessary to deliver a critical fall height. The critical fall height, usually between 1-2m will determine the thickness of the shock pad you need to use.

www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Artificial Grass.indd 67
NAMGRASS Under normal circumstances (replacing a lawn) we recommend nothing more than weed membrane is used under the artificial grass, if the levels are being made up significantly or the stability of the ground is questionable we would also recommend a membrane is installed prior to the stone base too in an effort to stabilise any movement in the future. If there are drainage issues or worries with a particular project then Namgrass recommends a variety of products ranging from a ‘grooved’ plate system (12mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm or 70mm thick) or a product called ‘Floweb’ which is a neat little product 3mm thick, that can be used on rooftops, concrete/tarmac areas etc. to enable the water to move around under the grass freely. Then there is our ‘Shockpad’ range, all of which are certificated for certain ‘critical fall height’ criteria, therefore can be used in sport, multisport, play areas and under play equipment. All our shock pad systems are ‘jigsaw’ making them incredibly easy to install.

“In my experience, trends in garden paving design are often seen two to three years after they appear in urban design.” Says Giles Heap, Managing Director of CED, “the most recent trend has been the ubiquitous plank style paving, which first appeared in a big way in 2006, with the ‘More London’ scheme – by 2008-9 designers were starting to ask for this. Recently, there has been a tendency by urban designers towards the complete opposite of plank paving. Now they are designing paving in wide rows with shorter lengths; I suspect that this sleeper style may well be the next contemporary trend in paving design.” CED’s large range of granites and sawn and textured sandstone have always been popular for contemporary garden design, but many people also
seemed to want products with a little more life than the common Indian sandstones. Last year CED quietly introduced a new paving product called Ebony Cloud – and it was their fastest growth paving product of 2013. Products with movements and life and definitely trending. Ebony Cloud is a new and very contemporary paving that is definitely not boring! WWW.CED.LTD.UK

RIDE-ON MOWERS LATEST KIT Toro’s Groundsmaster 4000-D rotary mower range offers dramatic efficiency savings without compromising on performance or productivity. Also, better yet, intelligent power and fuel-use technologies mean that the 4000-D and 4100-D models are leading the way in complying with new EU emissions regulations for non-road vehicles. The key is Smart Power; acting as the ‘brains’ of the machine, this revolutionary system automatically controls mowing speed and optimises cutting performance. It particularly prevents bogging down in heavy turf, providing an unmatched quality of cut even in difficult conditions and/or when operated by a new user. The result is increased productivity, but reduced fuel and running costs. WWW.TORO.CO.UK

of the existing range of machinery. We value the dealers we already have on board highly, and are looking to develop this further throughout the year. We have a dealer locator on our website and actively promote end users to contact local dealers both to purchase and service their machines.
Give us a brief outline of your role.
My primary role is to bring the worldwide range of products to the UK market. To achieve this we are developing a quality network of stockists and service agents throughout the UK. We have had a strong start to the garden machinery range with good dealer take-up, but are looking to develop this network further.
How important is the landscape contractor to your business?
Very, we see this developing as the product is proven by use and reputation. We have recently extended our warranty to one-year commercial use, to further demonstrate our commitment to the sector. We support the landscaper by offering technical training, and have field based representatives who visit and speak to product-users, John Rushby Head of Sales ,UK & Ireland whilst supporting the dealer network.
What is the ethos of the company?
Hyundai Power Equipment
Hyundai Power Equipment’s ethos is about having the right product, with the right support. Our product has been proven world-wide for over five years and the support involves both providing a full range of spares, and technical backup from our Product Managers.
Are your products made in Britain?
No, we manufacture in the Far East and directly employ a team in Asia to ensure quality of product. With this approach we get lower costs, allowing us to maintain low prices to the product user, whilst maintaining the quality of the product.
What health and safety precautions do you take to ensure the safety of the contractor using your products?
We ensure that the product meets all safety requirements for its designed use. We also provide clear health and safety information with every product sold and technical information on our website. Do you think that the next 12 months will be better than the last in terms of turnover and profit?
As we launched the product at SALTEX 2013, the next 12 months will be substantially better than the last. We have had a very positive reaction. Are you introducing any new products in the next few months?
The new HYM51SPE electric start lawnmower with three speed gearbox comes to market very shortly. We see this as a popular machine for ease of use and could well become the best seller in the range of push and self propelled mowers. Have you got any plans for expansion?
What is the structure of the company?
The management structure is as flat as possible, with both Head of Sales and Operation Managers reporting directly to the MD; we see this as a positive foundation for future development. What is your route to market?
Hyundai’s route to market is rooted firmly in the dealer network, as has been proven by the development
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Trading with Hyundai.indd 93
How will you remain competitive for next year?
Having recently launched the range in the UK we are competitive in the market place. However this is under regular review and we are not complacent as we recognise product users always have a choice. Why do contractors choose your brand over competitors?
Contractors chose our brand on the basis of recognition of the Hyundai name and that it stands for affordable quality. Also, our dealers have access to a full range of spares and technical support, which allows them to promote both the product and the brand.
We are just about to move into a modern 120,000ft² premises. This is very exciting for us as it will allow full product training and technical support, as well as supporting further development opportunities throughout the year. LOOK OUT FOR...
CASPIAN ROBERTSON
At 28, Caspian Robertson is the Director of design and build company Caspian Gardens. He was also the finalist for the RHS Young Designer of the Year 2011 and 2013, and has designed and built gardens for RHS Hampton Court, RHS Malvern Autumn and Spring shows, and the Moscow Flower Show. We caught up with Caspian to find out a little more about this passionate entrepreneur...
What inspired you to get into the gardening world?
It all started about eight years ago when I redesigned and built a small garden area at the family home in Sussex. My dad had fallen into a pond that was completely hidden by our 10 years of neglect (I, for one, didn’t even know we had a pond – let alone with fish in it!), I found this a very fulfilling project over the summer before beginning university and it is when I really found my passion for gardens. Did you study garden design at university?
No, I studied for an Economics degree whilst doing garden maintenance for some extra cash. However, by the fourth year this had become a case of concentrating on landscaping and trying to remember to attend the university lectures! I graduated with a first and was set up on a Lehmans Brothers trading floor but instantly knew that my true calling was working with nature. In fact, within a month I had set up a landscaping company and enrolled on a horticultural course at Merrist Wood. How would you encourage more young people into horticulture?
Everyone is aware that there is a skills gap in the horticultural industry and I would say that there is no one answer to the problem. I feel extremely fortunate to have found something www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Look out for.indd 95
I truly love doing at a young age, and I think it is all of our duty to impart our passion for what is a fascinating vocation at all opportunities. The RHS’ Horticulture Matters report is making strong progress at addressing the issue on a governmental and educational standpoint, and I feel the right marketing and media approach is another important part of the puzzle. What project are you most proud of?
I like to think I am proud of all of our gardens, large or small, although you certainly get more satisfaction when the client is truly thrilled with the end results. For this reason, I am very proud of an early one for an Special Educational Needs school that catered for kids with severe autism and Asperger syndrome. Aside from the practical considerations the design incorporated all sorts of cognitive benefits built-in, seeing the appreciation of the children interacting with it when finished was something special. What sort of considerations are important when catering for autism?
Inherent in the design ethos of the garden is the ability for the pupils to work directly with plants. By planning, growing and planting, their spatial and inter-temporal imagination can be developed. Other elements are built in, such as a calming planting scheme, as pupils will often exhibit hypersensitivity. I find designing for special needs a really
interesting area, in particular Alzheimer’s, which is a topic full of challenges and opportunities. Design for a care setting is going to be a huge area of the industry over the forthcoming decades. You have done several show gardens now, any plans for more next year?
I’ve definitely got the bug – there is nothing as much fun as show gardens, so long as you’re a glutton for punishment! We are putting together a WW1 centenary garden with the National Heritage and other non-profit organisations for Malvern Spring Show and an English Rose Garden for the Moscow Flower Show. We are also aiming for Hampton Court again as this is a particularly great event and 2013’s garden led onto some great prospects, including one in Saudi. It has always been my dream to travel the world putting beautiful gardens together, and it is so exciting that this is starting to happen. Personally, I would absolutely love to try my hand at the Japanese World Cup! Contact: Caspian Gardens www.CaspianGardens.com CaspianRobertson@CaspianGardens.com
