Love Dessert Bar by Kate Aspen

When planning your menu, always think of ways to incorporate your color scheme throughout the food and drinks you are serving. 6 ~ February 2015

www.ellaandanniemagazine.com

For this Love themed dessert bar, we started with our backdrop, a beautiful ombre chiffon fabric, available at local craft stores. Our new personalized orchid backdrop is another great option! To complement our color scheme, we pulled in elements of gold and coral. We wanted to keep our love themed dessert bar simple with chocolate, cheese & wine. We served up Pink Moscato wine in these great personalized stemless wine glasses that we had monogrammed in gold! They are so pretty! Pink Lemonade served in vintage glass milk jars is a fun non-alcoholic option to offer. Coral sugar crystals sprinkled around the rim added a sweet finish to these drinks. www.ellaandanniemagazine.com

February 2015 ~ 7

We also served white cheddar cheese cut into heart shapes, topped with a raspberry and these great ‘X’ & ‘O’ appetizer picks! The picks come in silver but for our party, we just quickly covered them in gold leaf to bring in the gold. We made a serving piece from a heart shaped craft box that we covered in gold glitter paper. This is a great way to re purpose an old heart-shaped chocolate box into a keepsake box with a perfect surface for baked treats, like our adorable mini blueberry chocolate cupcakes topped with a coral colored fondant heart. The star of the show was our Cream Puff Trifle! Inspired by Martha, we cut a few corners for this semi-homemade sweet. We 8 ~ February 2015

simply layered ready-made ingredients for this delicious dessert that was the perfect color for our Radiant Orchid color scheme! Our finishing touches to pull our dessert bar together included flower balls and glitter gold heart garlands to hang above our table. And to make sure our guests knew what they were being served, we added our free printable menu cards to these gorgeous gold frames! So get inspired and host a Love themed party for the couples in your life. And if you’re single? Grab your girls and celebrate love this Valentine’s Day! With a party this glam, who needs the guys?

Valentine Mason Jars

by Sweetly Chic Events

There’s no sweeter way to show someone you care than by making a homemade gift from the heart. This simple DIY would make the perfect teacher, neighbor gift or would even be a fun way to decorate your home this Valentine’s Day! 16 ~ February 2015

www.ellaandanniemagazine.com

Supplies: -Mason Jar -Gold Spray Paint -Gold Glitter Spray Paint -Heart Shaped Craft Punch -Painter’s Tape -Valentine’s Candy (we used sixlets) -Ribbon - Begin by tearing a piece of masking tape off your roll and placing it inside your heart punch and carefully punching your heart shape. - Firmly adhere your tape heart onto your clean and dry mason jar. - Use light and even strokes to cover your mason jar in gold spray paint. You will want to remove your lid and spray that as well. - Once your coat of gold spray paint is dry, apply a layer of gold glitter spray paint for a little extra shimmer! - Once the gold glitter layer is dry to the touch, carefully remove your tape, leaving a crisp heart shaped window! - Next place your candies into your freshly painted jar and seal it with the lid. - You can easily do more than one jar for teacher, class gifts (using plastic mason jars) or for your neighbors! - Dress up your mason jar by adding a pretty themed bow.

You now have the perfect crafted Valentine’s day treat! What better way to fill the season with love and joy that to create something homemade and special for someone you care about!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Y I D Giant Paper Rose Green Wedding Shoes Materials (to make one giant rose):

• 1 Roll of floral tape • 6 18-gauge floral stem wire (can find it here) • 4 sheets of Doublette crepe paper for petals (can find it here – the doublette crepe is $2.50 per sheet and each sheet measures 10x 49 inches) • 1 sheet of Doublette crepe paper in green for leaves, calyx, stem • 1 round pencil • Craft Glue (we used this kind) • Crepe paper templates (download from Martha Stewart) • 3 copies of teardrop template • 8 copies of the heart-shaped template • 2 copies of the leaf template • 1 copy of the calyx template 20 ~ February 2015

www.ellaandanniemagazine.com

Step 1

Step 1: Cut the petals

Cut 5-6 teardrop petals and 15-6 heart-shaped petals from the petal colored crepe paper. VERY IMPORTANT: Crepe paper is directional so it matters which way you’re cutting the paper. Make sure the grain is vertical when you’re cutting the flower pieces. Stack 2 pieces of crepe paper on top of each other then place 1 copy of template over the crepe paper and staple. I don’t recommend cutting more than 2 layers of crepe paper at a time since the edges won’t be cut as cleanly.

Step 2: Cut the leaves + calyx

Cut 3 leaves and 1 calyx from the green crepe paper.

Step 3: Make the rose stem

Take 3 pieces of stem wire and wrap in floral tape.

Step 4: Shape the petals

With both hands, pull from the center of the petal outward. This will create a cupping of the paper (which is what gives it the petal-like quality)

Step 3

Step 4 www.ellaandanniemagazine.com

February 2015 ~ 21

Step 7

Step 5

Step 6

Step 5: Create the rose bud – the inner part of the rose

Take one teardrop shaped petal and wrap around the taped floral wire from Step 3. Use more floral tape to secure. Repeat working your way around the floral wire until all of the teardrop shaped petals are use.

Step 6: Make the rose bloom –the outer part of the rose

Take one heart-shaped petal and wrap around the rose bud, secure with floral tape. Repeat until all petals have been used.

Step 7: Make the leaf-stems

Take 3 loose pieces of floral wire and using craft glue, wrap each one with green crepe paper. Take one leaf and 1 crepe paper wrapped floral wire from step 10 and glue together. Repeat 2 more times.

Step 8: Add calyx to rose

Wrap the calyx around the base of the rose bloom and secure with floral tape. Cover the floral tape area with more crepe paper.

Step 8

22 ~ February 2015

www.ellaandanniemagazine.com

Step 9 Step 9: Add leaf-stems to rose

Using craft glue, secure each of the 3 leaf-stems to the rose stem. I found it helpful to use binder clips to hold the stems together while the glue was drying. And there you go! It might take a little time, but a great (and pretty awesome) alternative to real flowers for your bouquet – plus you can keep these forever!

-Line up one end of the strips in the following order: white, 11” red, 6 “ red, 11” red, white. -Holding the lined up ends securely, peel down the white strip and line up at the bottom. -Next peel down the long red strip. Line it up at the bottom too. Repeat steps on the other side of the heart.

-Staple the bottom of the heart together, making sure you catch all the strips of paper. -Punch hole about 1/2 inch from the top of the center strip. Thread bakers twine through the holes of all the hearts. I even made some smaller hearts from the leftover pieces of red and white paper strips. Once your hearts are strung on the twine, hang up your heart garland in a prominent place to share some love with all who see it!

The Sweetest Thing Adventures in Valentine’s Day DIY Krystel Schley, Oriental Trading 40 ~ February 2015

www.ellaandanniemagazine.com

Oh, Valentine’s Day! That lovable little holiday that creeps right up on you (but you don’t mind because it becomes socially acceptable to eat copious amounts of chocolate in the shape of hearts).

work and add a few extra pieces of tape for good measure. This sucker could get swept up in a tornado and would still not come undone. The corners of the gift are crinkled and there’s a gap at the bottom between wrapping paper – a misfire on measuring, aka, my signature gift-wrapping style (seriously, this is a cry for help). I cut a long, bright piece of ribbon and tie it around the box, aiming for a bow, but accepting the hot mess cluster of knots it becomes. Just curl the ends, make it pretty, and divert their attention – boom! Nailed it. The final touch to my DIY disaster masterpiece, a note that reads, “Dear Mom, This box is filled with love. Happy Valentine’s Day! Love, Krystel”

Seriously though, didn’t we just take the Christmas lights down? I just reminded you to take the Christmas lights down, didn’t I? Well, now that Santa’s taking a long, much-needed nap and the Easter Bunny is somewhere doing squats to get his hop game on point, we’re right in the sweet spot that is Valentine’s Day. February 14th is all about adorable décor, classroom In all honestly, I had long since forgotexchanges, sugary goodness, and of ten about that silly little box. But, when I course, DIY crafts! made it back home to Northern California for a visit one February, I saw it perfectOn a scale of “I have no idea what a glue ly perched on the mantle next to some dot is” to “I’ve got Martha Stewart skills,” family photos and a couple other valenjust how crafty are you? It also hit me that my anxiety attack. In fact, one of my first for- wrapping skills have only slightly improved. ays into crafting goes a little something like this… It’s Valentine’s Day, circa 1990-ish. Hightop sneakers. Questionable bangs. Hyper-color t-shirt. You get it. I’m in full-on craft mode, furiously wrapping a small empty box (yes, you read that right – it was totally empty) with sparkly heart-printed paper. I’m drowning in a sea of glitter, valentine cutouts, and shredded ribbon - it looks like Cupid just got into a brawl with a fairy and I’m right in the center of the aftermath. So, this sweet season, why not craft your own Valentine’s Day décor and gifts with your own imagination and a little inspiration from Oriental Trading? Prep your little one for their classroom’s valentine exchange by having them decorate a cereal or shoebox with a few festive self-adhesive foam hearts (no glue means less mess and less stress…can I get an amen?) chenille stems and wiggle eyes for the perfect way to collect all that sweet stuff in style. If one-stop shopping is more your style, be sure to check out Oriental Trading’s craft kits for all-in-one ways to create adorable Valentine’s Day exchange boxes (that can later double as décor when they’re done.) Stock up your craft stash and create heartfelt handmade cards, or peruse a plethora of ready-to-go V-Day cards (that both boys and girls will love) with treats or favors already included. Valentine's Day Date Ideas with Your Child by Bernadyn Nettles

Valentine’s Day is not only for couples to celebrate but can be a special day to spend loving, quality time with a special someone else in your life, your child. Valentine’s Day can be a fun day for you and your child to share beautiful memories by taking time during this special occasionto bond. What better way to bond on this day in which love is celebrated than to go on a date with your little sweetheart? You can both choose a date activity to do together, let your child pick a date idea, take turns or choose a random date activity by drawing some ideas from a hat. First, you need a few ideas to enjoy with your little one. If you do not already have a date in mind, the following date suggestions offer something for everyone’s interests.

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue

A big Valentine gift seller are flowers. How about a date in an actual garden where you can walk through it and admire a variety of flowers and plants? Check local museums, zoos or garden clubs in your city that may have a large garden open to the public. Your child can learn about different plants and the walk through the garden can be a great time to talk. Take your camera with you because the splash of colors will make for a beautiful backdrop to take pictures together. If you want to buy flowers in keeping with 44 ~ February 2015

the classic Valentine’s Day tradition, visit your local florists and flower shops. Take time to look at the flowers available and allow your child to take home her own hand-picked bouquet. Another options is to visit a garden shop and buy seeds for plants to start your own garden. Make it a tradition to add a new plant or flower in your garden every Valentine’s Day. A great way to bond with your child is to learn something new together. Consider taking a floral arrangement class if you have an older child. There are craft stores and home improvement stores that may offer these classes in your city.

Sugar is Sweet

Valentine’s Day is iconic for heart-shaped candy, chocolate and everything sweet! Honor your little sweetie with a date to a candy store or local chocolatier. Check to see if you can get a tour of the shop or if they offer classes to learn how to make the candy or chocolates with your child. You can also have a fun date re-creating your own candy shop at home by making homemade sweet treats. Create a candy bar with your child’s favorite candy and put together some gift bags for family and friends to pass out after your date. Just remember to keep it simple and fun for your little one. If you enjoy cooking meals, cook up some fun in the kitchen with your child and then www.ellaandanniemagazine.com

go out afterward for dessert.

Outdoor Date Ideas

If you and your child enjoy activities outdoors, bring your date outside. Plan a hike, a fishing trip or make it a whole weekend date and go camping especially if you both rarely get to spend quality time together. This is also perfect if you are taking more than one child on the date or if the whole family wants to celebrate Valentine’s Day together. Allow each child or person in the family to choose a different activity while outdoors. Share something you love about one another while sitting around the campfire. Plan a picnic or tea party in the park or your backyard. Make heart-shaped sandwiches using a cookie cutter.Bring some iced tea or juice boxes for drinks along with your child’s favorite snacks. If your child enjoys sports, play a game together outside. Take her out for some ice cream or dessert after the game.

Show Love with a Good Pampering

Valentine’s Day is a time to indulge. Join your child for a spa day at the salon or create an at-home spa experience for one another. Play soothing music or watch a movie together while you take turns doing each other’s hair and nails.

Be My Valentine

Speaking of movies, watching a movie together is a classic date idea that kids will enjoy, too. Take your child to see a kid-friendly movie at the theater or have a movie night at home with some chocolate-covered popcorn. Here are some family-friendly Valentine www.ellaandanniemagazine.com

movie ideas: • Winnie the Pooh – A Valentine for You • Alvin and the Chipmunks – A Chipmunk Valentine • Barney: Be My Valentine • Sesame Street: Elmo Loves You • Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!: Hurray! It’s Valentine’s Day!

More fun ideas to celebrate Valentine’s Day

Visit a toy store where you can build your own stuffed bear or other stuffed animal. Build one together with your child. Several restaurants that are family-friendly often hold special events or deals for occasions like Valentine’s Day. They may even have a designated father and daughter night or mother and son night. Check in advance so you can plan ahead. Churches may also have father and daughter dances to help celebrate Valentine’s with your child. Refer to your local churches to see if any of them do this and if they are open to the public. Check local websites for family-friendly events on Valentine’s Day including places such as the zoo, museum or aquarium. Sugar is Sweet and So Are You Spending time on a date is a sweet way to reconnect.Use this time to shower your child with warmth and attention free from outside distractions. Get to know your child and focus on the moment. Every day is a day to shower one another with affection but setting aside time on Valentine’s Day to share a few moments of laughter and smiles will bring you closer together and sweeten the relationship.
