The creation of ELLA Inspires Magazine began with one idea in mind: find as many Women in business as possible and tell their story to the world. Most magazines fill their pages with irrelevant content or feature women on the cover with impossible standards. This is not the case with ELLA. We feature a variety of REAL women doing extraordinary things in their lives, careers, and for humanity.

We devote our entire brand to telling their stories and highlighting the achievements of Women who may otherwise never been konwn.

In this issue we celebrate the TWENTY NINETH cover of ELLA Inspires Magazine! Writing that seems like a dream to me. Our indie magazine has now featured TWENTY NINE inspiring, powerful, flawed - yetfabulous professionals, entrepreneurs, influencers, mentors, teachers, beauty

queen’s, makeup artists, celebrities, and many others. These women shared one common trait: the courage to pursue their dreams and take life by the horns. Thank you to Adriana and the other covergirls for sharing your lives, your stories, and your triumphs with ELLA.

Here’s to another 29 covers! We are eager to show you what we have planned for and thank you for being part of this amazing journey!

The Road from Tutuaca

Adriana López is a television producer and hostess of Acesso Total (Total Access) on Telemundo 39 and correspondent for Texas Today on NBC 5. She has bachelor’s degree in International Business and a master’s degree in Journalism with a focus on radio, television, and cinema.

I was born in Mexico, in the city of Chihuahua. I spent my entire childhood and part of my adolescence in the beautiful town of Tutuaca; there I attended kindergarten, elementary and middle school. Tutuaca is a town that I carry very close to my heart and the source of some of my most precious memories. As a kid, I was always involved in extracurricular activities such as chess, oral poetry, reading, in short, and anything else in which I could get involved. My childhood was very happy. I loved school and the teachers were always very nice and attentive to me. I spent the afternoons playing with my 3 siblings --Inez, Dalila and Soledad-- and the neighbor kids. Even though Tutuaca is a very small town, I really enjoyed being able to play outside in the trees without any worries. One of my fondest childhood memories is playing kick the can, jump rope, Jacks, and dodgeball with my family and friends in our patio at home.

I was always very dedicated in school, and to be honest, I was really scared to think about the future. My town is small and to be able to study beyond middle school you have to go to the city. Thinking about my future was something that really filled me with fear and I always remember asking my mom if I was going to be able to go to college.

Although she knew the possibilities were few, I am infinitely grateful to my mother for never saying ‘No’ to me. Instead, she said, ‘Yes you can, God willing.’ I asked because I wanted her to say yes, but not saying no kept my hope intact. As the years passed, my fear grew; I was already in middle school. I pleaded with God to help me find a way to continue my studies. One day, my mother announced that she was pregnant. After that, my parents decided to move our family to the United States. That unexpected move is one of the most impactful events of my life.

The road where my dreams would later come true began in the city of Plano, Texas. I enrolled in the 9th grade, obviously unable to speak any English. My first job was cleaning houses. Later, while I was still a student, I worked in a curtain factory and in a clothing store. During my university years, as a full-time student, there were instances when I had up to three jobs simultaneously.

During the day and between classes, I worked as a receptionist in one of the university offices. On weekends, I worked in a jewelry store putting up earrings. And at night, I worked as a blackjack dealer at corporate party events. Those jobs allowed me to sustain myself during my college years. My parents helped me as much as they could, (I am infinitely grateful) but my expenses were extensive and I had to learn to fend for myself.

I always say that what is meant to be, will be; which is the only way to explain being drawn into the world of communications. When I first started college I had no idea what to study, my goal had always been to attend college because I knew it would lead to more opportunities. After I had taken all my required courses, it was time to choose a career. First, I took an introductory criminology course and I loved it. Then, another course to become a teacher, which I also loved. Then I took a Business course and I loved it too! I liked everything. But I made my decision after speaking with a counselor at the University. She told me unless I wanted to become something specific, like a doctor, I could choose between many careers. She explained that when applying for a job, they usually require a bachelor’s degree (often it doesn’t matter what field you’re in) plus certain years of experience. I decided on a career in International Business. With that career, I felt that my possibilities were endless and I could work in any field that interested me. When I was a year away from graduating, I met people who worked for a radio station and they told me they were looking for a female voice for the afternoon show. At first, I didn’t think they were serious. But the idea of working for the radio filled me with excitement! It was something totally out of my comfort zone but something that excited me so much; I had to try it. The programmer for that station did not come to Dallas very often so I would have to wait a couple of months for an interview. I told them I would apply for whatever position was available and then work my way to the position I wanted. So I did. I began working in the promotions department. That first summer I worked at different events throughout the metroplex from six in the morning; many times until two in the morning.

After that, I worked for the sales department. When I was finally able to interview for the position, the station’s programmer hired me to work on air along with two other announcers. My love for communications just got stronger. After working for a year on the air, I was offered my turn on the radio. I accepted. At that time I was one year away from finishing my bachelor’s degree in International business. I decided to finish my degree in Business and then pursue a master’s degree in journalism.

Television arrived just like radio; without me looking for it. After having a turn on the air, the idea came up to work on a crossover project between radio and television, and I was asked to be a cohost. With great emotion and trepidation, I said yes; it was such a fun experience! It was a lifestyle and entertainment program in which I had the opportunity to interview current celebrities. There I fell in love even more with the world of communications. At the time I was one year away from finishing my degree in International Business so I decided to finish my degree in that branch and then do a master’s degree in journalism. That’s what I did. In 2008, I graduated with a master’s in journalism from the University of North Texas (UNT).

I came from a small town where the idea of being something more than a housewife was almost nil. It was challenging to leave fear behind; validate my dreams and convince myself that I could achieve everything I set out to do. Working on myself in a way where I had to change my way of thinking without damaging the values that my parents instilled in me. Deciding what stayed with me and what didn’t. Reinventing myself. I would dictate who ‘Adriana’ was and who she would be. Not placing limits on myself. That was the biggest challenge I had to face: Me.

Today, my goal is to educate others through entertainment and to motivate them to create their criteria. It seems to me that many times people are more receptive to learning something new when it is done entertainingly. I am also very passionate about encouraging people to think about the information presented, not to assume or accept something. I want people to decide what works best for them and their families and make their judgments.

BUSINESS ROLE MODEL

Without a doubt Oprah Winfrey. I admire a woman who has not only achieved the impossible but has not used her physical beauty to achieve her goals. I want women to be valued not only for their physique but for everything we are capable of doing.

INFLUENTIAL WOMEN

Without a doubt, the woman who has had the most influence on my life has been my mother. I think she was the first to believe in me when I didn’t even know I could go to college. She never told me that my dreams would not come true. My two sisters, Dalila and Soledad, have also influenced my life in a big way. I learned that what I wanted and what made me happy was not the same thing that made others happy. Each of us must seek happiness. My cousin Marisol Trevizo was undoubtedly another influence in my life. As a child, she was the only professional woman I knew, so I wanted to follow in her footsteps.

I always have students from the University who contact me for advice. I always give it to them. It is important not only to move forward but to try to open the way for those who come after. Through interviews on the show, I always try to support more women to continue to grow and shine. Build your support system. My husband not only believes in me but sees in me what sometimes I don’t even see myself. He wants me to keep growing bigger and bigger. My parents and my siblings have also undoubtedly supported me greatly throughout my career. And now? I am ready for any challenge that comes my way! I recently jumped into the English-speaking market as a correspondent for NBC5’s Texas Today; something I never thought I would be able to do. I really appreciated the opportunity and the nice reception from the viewers. It has certainly been a greatly satisfying adventure!

5 BINGE-WORTHY MOVIES TO WATCH

These five movies that will make you want to curl up in your favorite baggy sweater and drink that pumpkin spice latte while you watch.

RUNAWAY BRIDE (1999)

Set in the Maryland countryside, the autumn vibes in the movie are lovely. Julia Roberts plays a Maggie Carpenter, a small-town girl with big dreams and commitment issues. She runs her father’s hardware store but wants to be an industrial designer, and also has a unfortunate habit of leaving grooms at the altar. Maybe for critics this movie was just the somewhat lesser follow up to Robert’s and Gere’s amazing chemistry in Pretty Woman, but for me it will always be a classic feel-good romantic comedy that stands on its own, with a lot more depth to the characters than some give it credit for.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989)

While this movie spans several years in New York there are a lot of scenes that showcase the beauty of New York City in the fall. (Just look at the poster). An absolute classic romantic comedy starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal that feels timeless despite things like the scene where Carrie Fisher’s character pulls a Rolodex out of her purse as her ‘Little Black Book.’

LEGALLY BLONDE (2001)

Reese Witherspoon as the bubbly, determined Elle Woods never fails to inspire, especially as she brings her own Beverly Hills flair to dressing for the New England weather as she starts her first semester at Harvard. “She wants nothing more than to be Mrs. Warner Huntington III. But there is one thing stopping him (Matthew Davis) from proposing: She is too blond. Elle rallies all of her resources and gets into Harvard, determined to win him back.”

SWEET NOVEMBER (2001)

The title alone qualifies it to be on this list. Charlize Theron and Keanu Reeves star in this movie set in San Francisco about a workaholic who falls for an eccentric woman. “Nelson Moss (Keanu Reeves) and Sara Deever (Charlize Theron) have nothing in common except an hour spent in DMV hell. Intrigued by each other, but not quite ready to commit, they settle on a rather unconventional courtship: a one-month trial, after which they’ll go their separate ways.”

MONA LISA SMILE (2003)

Set in 1953, Katherine Watson (played by Julia Roberts) is a free-spirited UCLA graduate who comes to teach at Wellesley College, a women-only school where the students are torn between the repressive norms of that period and their longing for more opportunity and individuality

6 Safety Tips for Solo Travel

I began flying 15 years ago “just for fun” but I now find myself in command of an Embraer 145 full time! In that time I went from a cubicle to the cockpit, and I’ve never looked back. Over the course of these articles, I hope to educate and share my love and passion for flying; to peel back the curtain to the general public of otherwise unseen components of aviation. There is a lot of misinformation, confusion, and regulations that can make for an unnecessarily frustrating travel experience. Travel should be fun! Let’s bring that back!

No travel is fun travel without safety and security. Yawn, boring, I know. But being able to move about in the world free from fear should be the norm, but unfortunately, that is not the case. If one tip reaches someone and assists them in not becoming a victim, that is a huge win!  The following tips are for educational purposes and make no guarantees. You alone are ultimately responsible for your safety and security. Below are a few tips and tricks I have picked up along the way:

AIRTAGS

Air tags are cool, right? They help you find your lost bag. Well, that’s only if you put the air tag in/on your bag. If you get an alert on your iPhone that an air tag wants to connect with you, and it’s an unknown air tag, do not accept! It is an attempt by someone else to track YOU, quite literally!

LUGGAGE TAGS

Do NOT put your home address on a luggage tag where the information is visible from the outside. Flip it around so the blank side is out. Even doing this, I only put my email address on it. I know people who have been followed and received texts from strangers that obtained their info from their suitcase while sitting at a gate, in a people mover, or on a shuttle bus.

ROOM NUMBER

When checking in, the front desk should never say your room number out loud; they should only point to what they have written on the key envelope. If they do say your room number, and there are other travelers within earshot, don’t be afraid to ask for another room and request they not say the number out loud. They generally are trained not to do that, but people are human so politely ask for another room. Even if you feel the people around you appear “normal,” don’t judge a book by its cover or assume that just because you’re staying in a nice place you can let your guard down.

DOOR ALARM

There are many different ways you can create a door alarm to notify you if the door is opened. Some people even place a chair or their suitcase in front of the door.

Jennifer Shull is an Embraer 145 captain for a Part 135 operator. She is an Air Force vet with a life-long love of aviation. Jenn recently earned her ATP (Airline Transport Pilot) certification. It is the highest level certification that the FAA issues of which 1.7% are females! She has the privilege to do what she loves for a living.

TRUST YOUR GUT

If something doesn’t feel right, say something! If you feel like you are being followed, you probably are. If you’re alone in a hallway on your way to your room and get that feeling from someone else in that hallway, don’t go to your room. Instead, pretend you forgot something and go directly to the front desk.

SELF-DEFENSE

Even having the tools to get you out of a bad situation can be enough for you to walk with confidence and make you less of a target and less likely to need to call upon those tools. Think of it like insurance: it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

REDISCOVER GILMORE GIRLS THIS FALL

We all celebrate the start of our favorite seasons in our way. For fall, many of us will be hitting our nearest Starbucks for a hot pumpkin spice latte and maybe a pumpkin scone or muffin. A time to finally pull out our boots, scarves, and favorite coat soon. For some of us, the oncoming crispness in the air and the promise of cooler temperatures make us want to curl up with a good book or maybe put on our favorite movies and shows.

Gilmore Girls is a show that honestly needs no intro duction. Recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Television Shows of All Time, the show pre miered 22 years ago; almost to the day. So why is it my binge-pick this fall? Gilmore Girls continues to be beloved for its witty writing, relatable female protagonists, and a cast of quirky yet lovable side characters. Plus, Gilmore Girls is the quintessential autumn weather television show. As the show takes place in Connecticut, the fic tional town of Stars Hollow always shines with an array of beautiful fall colors. And after many views over the years, Stars Hollow still feels like my second hometown. I always picture Lorelei and Rory sitting at Luke’s diner sipping their 9th cup of coffee; no doubt wearing one of their many fabulous fall sweaters and beanies. They sit there watching Taylor arguing with Luke about not putting his turkey decorations in the window.

If you are already a fan, I’m sure you are picturing the scenes with me and reaching for your Apple remote or your DVD box set. But if you have never seen Gilmore Girls, and are perhaps intimidated by the 7 seasons (8 if you include the revival) and the large cult follow ing, I highly recommend giving the show a try. While not without its flaws, it is a very well-written show from creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. The show is well-known (even now) for its esoteric and literary pop culture refer ences. People have devoted TikTok accounts solely to ex plaining jokes from the show that most of us didn’t under stand the first time. Rory is a bookworm and academic that makes literary references frequently throughout the series. I had never heard of Dorothy Parker until I

watched Season One when Rory brings her book to her first school dance. After watching that episode, I had to go look her up. Even now, I enjoy the unique style and sarcasm of Dorothy Parker. The soundtrack and refer ences to music are just as iconic. Many fans, including myself, have a favorite song or artist discovered only thanks to the show. Even the backstories involving sup porting cast members make you feel like you are among neighbors and Stars Hollow is a real town.

Gilmore Girls celebrates the relationships between women of all ages and lifestyles: mothers, daugh ters, grandmothers, family friends, the crazy aunt, or a mentor. Each character is more than a perfectly dressed prop filling the background; each is strong with ambi tions and many are successful entrepreneurs. It is also a show that different generations can enjoy together. The show celebrates three generations of women in the same family that come together despite their differ ences at times of extreme difficulty to navigate unique family relationships. The celebration of mother-daugh ter relationships even comes through in the making of the theme song. It is taken from the 1971 Carole King hit “Where You Lead”, and Carole recorded a new version specifically for the show with her daughter, Louise Goffin.

I loved watching it every week with my mother in the 2000s when it was on WB, and even though my mother has since passed away, I still enjoy watching it now with my younger sister. Aside from all the myriad of intellectu al reasons this show has endured as a favorite, the show very simply has heart. Gilmore Girls is something fun for you and someone special to put on as the colder weather approaches to make some lasting memories.

NEW RELEASES

The Woman King starring Oscar®-winner Viola Davis, is an epic historical film about the Agojie; the all-female elite warrior unit who protected the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century (also referred to as the ‘Dahomey Amazons’). The talented Viola Davis stars as a general who trains the next generation of warriors. I had not heard much about this film until earlier this summer, but I promise I am not exaggerating when I say that watching the trailer for the first time actually gave me goosebumps. This is a movie I am greatly anticipating (and not just because I am a huge fan of Viola Davis). Not only does the casting look amazing, it’s also written and directed by women, and is also based on true historical events about a group of amazing women. I’m sold.

She Hulk: Attorney at Law is a new Disney+ Marvel series that started streaming on August 18th. Tatiana Maslany plays Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner aka The Hulk. Jennifer or She Hulk has all the massive strength that the Hulk does, but she still retains her in telligence while transformed. If you’re not really into su perheroes and I’m starting to lose you, at least consider watching the trailer. I didn’t expect much at first honestly, though I am a bit of a comic book nerd. But watching the trailer was very exciting not only as a nerd but as a woman.

She Hulk frankly looks like a powerhouse woman trying to overcome the challenge of being 6 ft 7in and green while succeeding as a young lawyer. And while I don’t have to deal with being literally green, having a lot on your plate and balancing your work and personal life as a woman is definitely something I can relate to.

• Jennifer/She-Hulk raging at some cat callers the first time she transforms. Their terrified screams as they ran away were super satisfying to watch; my sister and I high-fived.

•Bruce Banner trying to train Jennifer on how to control turning into a Hulk says, ‘The triggers are anger and fear.’ She responds, ‘Those are, like, the baseline of any woman just existing.’

Aside from those specific examples, the overall feeling of this series, so far, is that it was written for me; rather than your average male Marvel fan, and that’s pretty cool honestly. The show has two talented female di rectors and the head writer is also a woman. And it shows. Of course there’s no way of knowing how the rest of the series will turn out, but I remain hopeful.

This series feels very ‘character driven’ without an overly grandiose superhero setting (so far no talking raccoons or blonde Norse gods). Jennifer is introduced to the audience as a capable and intelligent lawyer, that also struggles with the insecurity - both emotionally and financially - of your typical millennial young professional that’s starting out and trying to pay off student loans. It is almost too relatable honestly, especially for a Marvel series. I don’t want to spoil anything, but some brief highlights from the pilot include:
