Letter From The Editor The creation of ELLA Inspires Magazine and the ELLA brand itself directly resulted from taking tiny steps forward at crucial moments. I formed a magazine to improve brand visibility for my then web design clients. Then, to create a unique experience for the women featured, we developed a #beautysquad to help women look their best during their photo shoots. We started partnering with local studios and venues to host those photo shoots to include even more women in our mission. After that, we contacted local women-owned businesses to sponsor products in exchange for photography. In this issue, we have partnered with dozens of luxury brands that share our esteem for women in business. They also support our mission to provide a quality lifestyle publication for female founders. With this issue, we celebrate THIRTY-ONE covers of ELLA Inspires Magazine! Writing that seems like a dream to me. Our indie magazine has featured THIRTY-ONE inspiring, powerful, flawed - yet - fabulous professionals, entrepreneurs, influencers, mentors, teachers, beauty queens, artists, celebrities, personalities, models on our cover. These women shared one common trait: the courage to pursue their dreams and take life by the horns. Thank you for sharing your lives, stories, and triumphs with ELLA. We are eager to show you what we have planned for this year, hank you for being part of this fantastic journey!

We’re only getting started..

I grew up in Los Angeles, CA, and since my dad was a doctor and my mother was an artist, there was a high expectation for academic excellence in our household. I was also always encouraged to pursue my early affinity for fine art; their dream was for me to be the first in the family to attend art school. My parents sent me to all the best art programs: Oxford, England, to study plein air painting, Summer school at Pasadena Art Center, a summer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a summer in Spain at the Universidad Complutense. Once, I even had a Disney animator tutor me at my house! I know it’s because of them that I have been able to create and establish a career for myself as an artist and designer. My parents are immigrants from Korea, and I am thankful to them beyond the depths of my heart for pouring all their resources into me my whole life. There were times when I was embarrassed by my heritage, but I learned to harness what is unique and special about me, which is my Korean culture.

“I will always be eternally grateful to my parents for allowing me to fully embrace life as a young artist.”

My art practice has been an exploration of my identity as a Korean and an American since high school, and it has created a profound and never-ending, meaningful art practice and life for me. I was awarded the school prize in visual arts at Harvard Westlake High School. That was a turning point because it made me feel like I had become a real artist. I wore it as a crown of confidence (along with being voted best dressed, ha!) In all seriousness, fashion was always a massive part of my creative discovery as a child; and still is today. I would go thrifting with my older sister, and together we poured through piles of clothes to figure out what spoke to us aesthetically; unbeknownst to us then, we were building our brands. My mom is incredibly inspiring because she is an accomplished and accredited Korean folk art painter, talented pianist, florist, and arts philanthropist. Although I wanted to become an artist my whole life, I needed to discover myself after college and rebelled a little by pursuing set design and interior design. That led me to a Master’s in interior architecture and a job as a designer at Michael Smith while they were working in the White House for the Obamas. It was a challenging training ground, but I am forever grateful because I learned everything I needed to know to start my own company in 2012. I started with a solo art show at the Korean education center that sold out, encouraging me to follow my dream of founding a home decor company based on my artwork. Krane Home was born in 2013. It’s been ten incredible years of married life to my wonderful husband Max, creating two beautiful boys Conrad and Warner - (I joke that the wallpaper boom coincided with my baby boom!) and slowly and consistently coaxing along my business and art career simultaneously.

“My dad would always say: ‘life is a marathon’ - keep showing up, continue with your routine each day, and take action toward your goal. One day you’ll achieve whatever you want.”

I was born with determination and persistence that almost borders on OCD! My mom and dad taught me to go for things I never thought possible because they might just happen to me! The desire to hustle and the sheer force of will to succeed (by an immigrant family and their children) is a superpower. Everything I have done so far is because I took a risk, even though I knew I could fail hard. My parents taught me that you can’t dwell on failures. You have to keep going.

THE EARLY YEARS As a child, I remember going over to my grandparent’s apartment. My grandfather was an artist in Korea. He painted movie billboards for the American soldiers to earn money for medicine and food for their families during the war. He could buy penicillin with the money and saved my uncle’s life. My grandfather’s passion was drawing and painting. He had a disability, so he did not attend college in the US like his brothers and sisters. Instead, he stayed behind on the family ranch with all his beloved animals and would paint them constantly. He was so good at drawing animals. One day, I told him I was so bad at drawing horses. He taught me some techniques, and I still think about his advice today. He was the one who taught me how to sharpen a pencil with a knife, which made for a better sketch. The art inspiration in my family didn’t stop there. I remember our dining table covered with paintings in progress on which my mother was working. She is one of the best artists I know; she is talented beyond measure. Her commitment to each completed piece inspires me whenever my brush touches a surface. I have many of her works in my home and even offer several as art prints on my website.

20

E L L A I NS P I RE S / I S S UE 31

LEARNING THE BUSINESS I have studied and worked as an artist my entire life, but I wanted to put my entrepreneurial spirit to work. When I was little, I would craft flowers to sell to my mom and her friends. At 16, I started a company selling jewelry to local stores. I knew I didn’t want to sit in a studio and make paintings alone. The idea was to develop a product to replicate that showcases my paintings and art so people everywhere could learn about and appreciate the modernized Korean art I paint. I studied interior design because I was very interested in how art and decor come together to create a home. After a tenure as a designer at Michael Smith about 11 years ago, I decided to strike out on my own. I had a solo art show at the Korean education center, and from these sold-out pieces, I created a wallpaper line called Krane Home. The company quickly gained popularity amongst designers for its bold, unique patterns and saturated colors. Each design motif symbolizes something in Korean art: Cranes for longevity, Peony flowers for abundance and wealth, Tigers for protection, Monkeys for luck and Lotus for purity Designers and homeowners loved the meaning behind the patterns, and I loved sharing that with them. We added fabric by the yard to the line, and art prints, pillows, and a baby line. I’m very proud of what I have created; each homeowner who has chosen Krane Home knows that what they selected will never go out of style. After all, I named the company after the Crane, which in Korean culture is the most potent symbol of longevity; they live an average of 30 years (up to 80 years) and mate for life. I wanted to call it Crane with a “K” for Korean as a nod to my life mission to share Korean art with American families.

22

“You have to be brave, bold, and be yourself. That is what will pave your brand aesthetic.”

In the beginning, when I was developing my wallpaper collection, my printer hesitated to mix the colors I wanted for the wallpapers and hand-printed fabrics because they were too vibrant and too bright. One of them refused to incorporate the pink for my royal pineapple in pink. He said the shade of pink wouldn’t sell. Interestingly enough, these saturated colors, which weren’t on the market then, make my brand stand out. At this point, most designers and home decor lovers can pick out a Krane Home wallpaper in a room instantly. I also made it a point to create patterns unavailable on the market. While working at Michael Smith, I started organizing fabric samples in their showroom. There was nothing, and I mean nothing, inspired by Korean art, and I was determined to create something unique and new from my culture. Our Tiger and Magpie pattern is bold, with 15-inch traditional Korean tigers roaming the handprinted rolls. When I was developing it, everyone warned me it wouldn’t sell. Well, it ended up on the cover of Luxe magazine and has been featured widely in numerous publications; when you’re a creative of any kind, you can’t pay attention to what others think will or will not sell.

“10 LONGEVITIES,” 2023 SIGNED ORIGINAL PAINTING BY SHARON LEE CLARK GOUACHE, TEMPERA, ADHESIVE, 24K GOLD LEAF, 12K WHITE GOLD LEAF, RESIN, ACRYLIC GEMS, ROCKS, CRYSTALS, GLITTER, HOT GLUE, GESSO, ON WOOD PANEL 60” X 48”

Ten Longevities

The ten longevities in Korean art are Cranes, Deer, Turtles, Mushrooms, Peaches, Mountains, Water(falls), Pine Trees, Clouds, and Sun/Moon. For the first time in my work, each of these longevities appears in one painting. This piece is the largest and the hero of the show, where the mystical power of all ten longevities come together in one world, vibrating with prismatic color, genuine gold embellishment reminiscent of couture, and sparkling resin mimicking the glint of the water’s surface. Search on Google for “ten longevities Korean art,” and you will find examples of the ancient versions. Compared to my work, they might seem more neutral and darker overall. However, these colors were outlandishly bright and vibrant back then, using natural pigments from roots and flowers. Now, the palette of our eye has changed significantly with the invention of synthetic colors. I aim to relay the same powerful themes of longevity while bringing everything into the modern world. Korean folk art in its heyday had a hopeful, joyful, playful aesthetic that glorified the experience of everyday life; (almost to a naive degree) to make those that came in contact with it healthier, protected, and happier. I’ve taken this to the extreme, where I’ve created a world for you that is so beautiful, nature that is hyper-real, hypnotic, and saturated, and brings the beauty of Korean art to American homes.

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS When I first decided to start a textile line based on my art, several people told me not to bother because the competition was fierce and it would be useless to try. I’m thrilled I didn’t listen because I wouldn’t have created Krane Home if I had. I’ve experienced a lot of ‘nos’ on my journey, and I’ve learned that any successful person had to get rejected a ton before they came to those key ‘yes’ moments that helped propel them to where they are today. It’s not easy starting a business, but I will say that all you have to do is start. If you’re considering starting a business, I think it is one of the most brilliant things we can do for ourselves. Entrepreneurship creates independence and feeds our creative passion. There’s nothing complicated about starting a business. The hard part is the grind of it. Put one foot in front of the other even when you feel you’re moving backward instead of forward some days. But my husband and I always joke that the leaders and people at the top of each industry are simply the people who just kept going for many, many years. We say, “Ha! I’m still standing!” And that’s all that matters! One day you’ll find yourself on top of the mountain and wonder why you ever had those days where you were doubtful at all. Everyone has it in them to share their talent with the world in a creative way. As women, we need to encourage each other and bring women together to uplift each other.

“If you have a business idea, don’t wait another day. Just start.” Hop on your city’s website and grab a resale license (if that is what’s required). Grab a domain name from any hosting site. Learn how to build a simple website yourself on YouTube and launch it. Create that Instagram profile today, not tomorrow. Focus on taking action to get what you want. It would help if you started building a customer base. Start making the product that you want and start selling it. You don’t need to have anything fancy. As long as your product and service speak for themselves, then people will come to support you. Once you have sales, you can use that toward building your brand. It took many iterations and slow building to get to where my company is now. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, even if it’s imperfect. Perfection is a kind of evil. I’m a recovering perfectionist, so I tell my kids daily, “Perfect doesn’t exist.” Waiting for perfection before launch is any entrepreneur’s biggest Achilles’ heel.

Being a boss is not for everyone; you do not have stability. Everything is up to you in terms of reaping what you sow. But on the flip side of that, entrepreneurship is perfect for you if you need to have more flexibility in your day (and if you’re a mom) and you get a thrill out of taking home every dollar of what you pour your hard work into. You will flourish. Don’t wait another day. Just start somewhere! Even if it’s not perfect.

SUPPORTING WOMEN Everyone who knows me knows that I am a fierce collaborator! I am obsessed with meeting new women who are passionate about something. I am everybody’s biggest cheerleader, no matter what you do! If you are in my circle - which is very large on purpose - I am promoting you, encouraging you, and showing up for you. We should all do that for the women in our lives. There’s enough business to go around. We hear this constantly, but it is magic when we rise together! You need the help of your female friends and supporters to reach your goals. And, if you collaborate, chances are you’ll find yourself far and away past your initial goals, and you’ll catapult into the stars where we all belong! Finding strategic ways to collaborate and taking action on these ideas is vital to the success of women in business. I’m constantly thinking of ways to create excitement around multiple brands at once. Maybe it’s an event? Perhaps it brings in a charity that you all love to support! Maybe it’s a limited edition product? Perhaps you’re just going to plan a dinner with a group of incredible female entrepreneurs that should know each other! The guaranteed result is dynamic, magnetic, and catalytic when you get multiple strong women in the room together.

MY PERSON My greatest supporter is my husband, Max. We are complete opposites in every sense of the word. It must be tough for him (as someone in Tech with an analytical brain who owns an IT Brokerage) to live with an artist!

36

But despite our ‘opposites attract’ relationship, he is always the first person to support me, comes to my events, gives me fantastic business advice, and helps me with all of my Tech (such a bonus!) He gives me the emotional support I need at a hard day’s end.

“Max, I love you and you are a huge reason why I am where I am today! All of this is for our family at the end of the day and I always joke that I am our retirement plan since I am going to be painting when I’m old and gray.”

WHAT’S NEXT My collaboration with my dear friend and superstar fashion designer (and fellow mompreneur) Ese Azenabor has set the bar high! Her couture designs are the ultimate canvas for my paintings. It’s everything to me to collaborate in a meaningful and explosive way with a fellow female boss lady and mom. This is a long-term collaboration and will extend far beyond the excitement of our runway show. Fashion has always been a massive part of my life and who I am as a creative person and artist. I know that foraying into the fashion world in tandem with the best in the industry is where I want to be; I will continue to move toward the future. Of course, I’m always looking at expanding and building my wallpaper company Krane Home, continuing my career as a fine artist, and doing art shows collaboratively, which is all a lifetime endeavor.

A Real Life Fairy Tale Series AN INTERVIEW WITH EMBERLI PRIDHAM TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK! I was reading to my daughter one night - it was a fun fiction fairytale - and I thought: how amazing would it be to read about a real princess that did so much good for the world? “A Real Life Fairy Tale Series: Princess Diana” takes young readers through her years as a spunky girl in Norfolk, England to her courtship by Queen Elizabeth’s son, Prince Charles, through to her emergence as one of contemporary history‘s most accomplished fighters for social change. I wrote this book to introduce Princess Diana’s elegance in philanthropy to today’s younger generation. She exemplified grace and approachability - something that our kids can grow and inspire to be like.

CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE MOMENT THAT SOLIDIFIED YOUR DECISION TO PURSUE ENTREPRENEURSHIP? Before I became the mom of three amazing children, I worked in fashion doing events, styling, visuals, and management. It was fun but I wasn’t sure what to do after I had kids. Before my Grandmother passed, she told me to be a writer and I brushed it off; but the thought of writing kept coming back to mind. After releasing a seven-book series with my husband, inspiring our generation of children to learn about inventions, I decided to branch out on my own and write an inspiring book series about influential women who used their platform for the good of others! I want to motivate and inspire our young ladies to dream and remind them that they can do anything they put their minds to!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS AND BECOME A FEMALE FOUNDER? My Grandmother inspired me! She was an author and writer also. She wrote a motivational book about facing your fears and overcoming obstacles in life. She was truly inspiring and very much missed. I think it is so important to teach our generation of ladies to go after their dreams and never give up!

WORDS TO LIVE BY

I’m in an industry were things change all the time--styles, trends and technologies. I actively go to design shows like Salone del Mobile in Milan looking for inspiration and resources to continue to improve my industry knowledge and evolve my style while staying true to my brand. My goal is to continue to seek out interesting and inspiring projects! S. B. Long Interiors balances modern and classic elements to create sophisticated, timeless interior spaces. Each interior is a unique mix tailored to the client’s aesthetic and architecture. S. B. Long Interiors is widely known for its “Modern Traditional” signature style.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS AND BECOME A FEMALE FOUNDER? My Dad was my greatest inspiration. He was an entrepreneur himself creating a number of businesses from marketing to developing products. I grew up going to his office. I always had a creative spirit and ability to draw. He fostered that in me allowing me to volunteer in the art department of his marketing company. He would always talk about the benefits of being your own boss and that I should strive to do that when the time was right and when I found something I was passionate about. Later in college, I became very interested in sculpture and created site-specific installations. That piqued my interest and lead me to continue my education in interior design - which has become that passion.

WHAT SETS YOUR BRAND APART FROM COMPETITORS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? Whether decoration or a full renovation, each project is distinctive. Working closely with clients, I have a practical approach and excel at execution from design concept through every detail of the final installation. I like to say, “I keep the drama in the design, not the process. My clients are highly successful people who want it done right and that’s what I do.”

CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE MOMENT OR EXPERIENCE THAT SOLIDIFIED YOUR DECISION TO PURSUE ENTREPRENEURSHIP? I was working at Polo Ralph Lauren in NYC in their creative services department designing the stores. My boss and mentor told me he was leaving design to go to Hollywood to pursue his dream of being a screen writer. It was a big blow to me. He was such a fun, supportive boss and working there without him would be very different. At that moment I realized I was ready to make the move to pursue my own interior design business. Previously, I had worked for a design build company in Beverly Hills and successfully managed interiors projects at Ralph Lauren. I was finally mentally ready to be an entrepreneur. From that point forward I never looked back.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS FOR YOUR BUSINESS, AND WHAT MILESTONES HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SO FAR? First and foremost, client satisfaction. I am proud to have clients coming back with multiple projects like a second home, when they relocate or when they just want a refresh. When I get client notes describing my interiors and how they “make the day to day so workable” for their families that is my definition of success. It is also a nice achievement to have my work be featured within shelter publications like D Home, Veranda, Luxe Magazine and be distinguished within the Dallas design community with five Paper City Design Awards and D Home’s Best Designer list.

healing gemstones and countless other unique natural accents, with succulents, preserved moss, cactus and plant varieties, yield a composition that’s captivating and interesting. We aim to create specialized modern nature for our clients.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS AND BECOME A FEMALE FOUNDER? I like to say my mom was an entrepreneur before it was cool! Growing up watching her build a business, without a doubt, influenced my path to become a female founder. My mom was energized by involving her kids in her career, whether it was bringing us along to a TV appearance or testing recipes with her in our kitchen. I saw firsthand throughout my life her persistence to build a successful career, without sacrificing her time with family. All of the values I was naturally taught in this process, I reference daily as I’m making decisions on how to balance my career and family. I’m thankful for the strong foundation I received from my mom and have no doubt Urban Spikes was born out of the spirit she instilled in me.

WHAT UNIQUE PROBLEM DOES YOUR BUSINESS SOLVE, AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO ADDRESS IT? Despite never having a green thumb, I have always loved the warmth and inspiration botanicals bring into a space. When my husband and I bought a mid-century-modern home and took it down to the studs, I wanted greenery to add character, but without the stress of caring for it. I was drawn to creating designs with cut succulents and moss because of their low maintenance and versatile nature. One of my best friends, Kari Feinstein, who owns Enlighten Med Spa, encouraged me to start selling arrangements and offered her business as my first sales location. Soon after, Urban Spikes was born, and now our cactus, plant, and botanical designs adorn thousands of homes and businesses throughout DFW.

CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE MOMENT OR EXPERIENCE THAT SOLIDIFIED YOUR DECISION TO PURSUE ENTREPRENEURSHIP? I can name a lot of moments that worked to stop me in my tracks. Honestly, I believe the combination of customer and family support in my first year of business gave me the courage and energy to propel Urban Spikes forward into what it is today. I immediately and overwhelmingly received positive feedback on my designs from customers, so proof-of-concept was established pretty quickly. That in combination with support from my husband, family and friends to trust my intuition was all I needed. And with that, I built a very niche

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR BRAND, AND HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CONTINUE GROWING AND EVOLVING? Our brand is very visual because most of what we create is original and completely inspired. Opening our studio 4 years ago was a huge turning point for Urban Spikes. Our client’s are able to come in person to see the breadth and variety, and details of our designs. We’ve worked to evolve the studio into a space that includes something for everyone, from our most thoughtful centerpieces to the perfect grab-and-go gift. We’re continuously working on elevating designs with new natural accents, healing gemstones, elevated vases, and unique concepts. While we started solely making tabletop arrangements with cut succulents, Urban Spikes now also offers large plants, nature installations, moss walls, and faux creations. We can schedule on-site or virtual consultations to get started, and our team of designers work with you to conceptualize, create and ultimately install custom designs tailored to your space, style and brand. We also offer full-service weekly or monthly maintenance plans to keep your space looking fresh, modern and elevated all year long.

IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU COLLABORATE OR CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES? As a female founder, it’s incredibly comforting and inspiring to work with other women who are getting it done. I started Urban Spikes during a time when home trunk shows were popular. The whole foundation of my business was built on women helping women. Women offered up their homes and networks of friends to support each other’s businesses. We tagged each other on social media and sent marketing emails to our customer bases publicizing each other’s brands. Also, I feel we give special attention to opportunities with women-owned businesses, most of which tend to push us creatively and fuel our passion for supporting women in our community. Our most recent collaboration with a woman-owned business is with the Afloat app, which offers gifting on-demand in Dallas.

WITH PURPOSE WORDS TO LIVE BY

“There have been many significant moments in my life where my instincts were not just whispering, but practically shouting at me to pursue a particular path. As a result, I now lead a team of successful agents and rank among the top producers in the Dallas luxury real estate market.” “My team and I stay ahead of housing trends, execute impactful marketing launches, and cultivate a cohesive team. Our motivation stems from the commitment to surpassing client expectations and delivering outstanding results.”

My commitment to collaboration and partnership extends beyond mere transactions. It is rooted in the belief that by working together, women-owned businesses can create a stronger, more inclusive, and supportive environment. Through events, partnerships, and mentorship, I aim to contribute to the success and empowerment of women in business, fostering a thriving community of like-minded individuals dedicated to making a positive impact in their respective industries.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS AND BECOME A FEMALE FOUNDER? The excitement of building a life with purpose inspired me to start my own business and become a female founder. When I was a Pre-Med student at TCU (with full intentions of becoming a Neurogastroenterologist), I learned interesting and applicable theories about human psychology and neuroscience; theories I use and apply almost daily. I graduated with my Pre-Med degree and an active real estate license - the latter after a friend approached me about entering the field of real estate. Young, naive and fearless, I took a leap of faith and started pursuing real estate in Dallas, months after graduation. As a daughter of immigrant parents and business owners, they taught me valuable lessons when it came to business: if you’re going to do something, do it right, and that integrity, honesty, faith and creativity will take you far.

WHAT SETS YOUR BRAND APART FROM COMPETITORS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? In the highly competitive Dallas luxury real estate market, setting oneself apart from competitors requires a unique blend of professionalism, dedication, and a client-centric approach. I have strategically crafted a brand that embodies these qualities. By placing my clients’ needs at the forefront of every interaction, I ensure their satisfaction and establish long-lasting connections. This approach has yielded remarkable results - 55% of my clients in 2022 were repeat clients. Additionally, I understand the power of referrals in this industry. Approximately 17% of my clients were acquired through outside referral sources, further validating the quality of service I provide. By consistently delivering exceptional experiences, my clients feel compelled to recommend my services to their friends, family, and colleagues.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR BRAND, AND HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CONTINUE GROWING AND EVOLVING? GGDALLAS Real Estate Group is poised to establish itself as a prominent force in the real estate industry within Texas. With a vision for exponential growth, I intend to enhance the brand’s reach and reputation by strategically expanding our team, diversifying our portfolio, and venturing into new avenues such as new construction developments, commercial projects, multifamily properties, and even exploring opportunities in hospitality and sales across different states and territories. As the organization flourishes, it is essential for me to nurture not only its professional growth but also its impact on the community. Therefore, I am committed to continuing my passion project: an annual School-Supply Drive that brings immense value to Bridgebuilders of Dallas, an organization I have wholeheartedly supported for over five years.

“We call ourselves ‘Two Blonde Shrinks’ because we quite literally are! Our goal is to truth talk about Wellness and Mental Health. Through our Podcast we’re making these topics more relatable. We don’t sugar coat and we don’t always agree but we love a healthy debate; which keeps things interesting. We hope you will tune in soon so we can grow together!”

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS AND BECOME A FEMALE FOUNDER? We are Dr. Elisabeth Crain and Dr. Irene Yaymadjian. We met in grad school and became best friends. After working in the field for over a decade as a therapist, we started a podcast to make Mental Health accessible to all. The field is so private and behind closed doors that we wanted to share our personalities with the world; that’s how Two Blonde Shrinks Podcast came about. We felt it important to tackle modernday challenges that people are facing in a relatable way. The podcast focuses on relationships and how to navigate life’s daily frustrations. We invite guests to talk about topics such as: how to overcome perfectionism, Mommy Mental Health, struggles with dating apps, or how to heal from a broken heart.

WHAT UNIQUE PROBLEM DOES YOUR BUSINESS SOLVE, AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO ADDRESS IT? We live in a world where Mental Health is stigmatized; many people aren’t open to sharing their struggles or going to therapy.

56

It was always our goal to destigmatize Mental Health. Therapy is for everybody; personal growth and development are what makes life exciting. While we deal with real-world issues with our clients, we also like to infuse empowerment and help people become the best versions of themself so they thrive. As shrinks, we understsand life isn’t always easy but we are here to support people in their journey. Today we see many people struggling to just find joy. There has been an uptick in social anxiety because of people’s focus on devices in a post-pandemic world. We want to encourage and bring out the fun, joy, and vitality to people’s lives. Our Podcast is our way of sharing our personality while talking about real life. Initially, we wanted to ensure we were authentic and provided truth talk to our listeners. We stay true to who we are, not only as shrinks but as individuals. As we continue to explore wellness and Mental Health, we hope others will be encouraged to work on themselves; there is a lot of bounty in self-discovery and growth.

E L L A I NS P I RE S / I S S UE 31

We hope to remove shame around Mental Health. The reality is a lot of people struggle and it is important to get help; whether you struggle with anxiety, depression, or addiction. We encourage people to overcome the stigma around Mental Health struggles and normalize the idea that life is hard and we should support one another.

WHAT SETS YOUR BRAND APART FROM COMPETITORS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? It is encouraging to see the many wellness and health movements taking place today, but we actually went to school for this stuff before it was cool. We love how much interest is out there and we want to share our expertise and knowledge with others. We spent a long time in our Master’s and Doctorate programs learning all about Psychology; a field that never bores us. Our job is never the same. Every time someone walks through our doors, their new stories, perspectives, and challenges keep us on our toes. We love what we do and believe our Podcast reflects that. Both of us have a curious mind and always want to know new cutting-edge Mental Health discoveries in the field and bring it to the Podcast. Our curiosity is what keeps things interesting.

CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE MOMENT OR EXPERIENCE THAT SOLIDIFIED YOUR DECISION TO PURSUE ENTREPRENEURSHIP? When the pandemic happened and therapy went to Zoom, we lost touch with person-to-person engagement. Many people have not returned to their therapist’s offices in person; we hope to be better connected someday. There is still a lot of post-traumatic stress that people are experiencing after the past couple of years; we want to talk about that and help people overcome it. During the pandemic, we noticed people collectively struggled more than normal so the idea of Two Blonde Shrinks was born. How could we reach people who wanted quick answers to specific problems? The answer was the Podcast. It was born from the desire to help people and have a greater community reach. Many people suffer in silence and we don’t want that. We find healing happens when we acknowledge our struggles and work on them.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS FOR YOUR BUSINESS, AND WHAT MILESTONES HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SO FAR? To us, success is helping one person - getting one message from a person saying ‘this episode helped me so much’ means everything to us. The gratitude people express makes it all worthwhile. Many people feel alone and the Podcast was a way of making people feel less alone with their struggles. We are currently on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube; you can also find us on Instagram and Tik Tok where we drop weekly reels from our episodes.

IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU COLLABORATE OR CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES? Many of the female guests we interview discuss women’s issues such as Maternal Mental Health, perfectionism, and overcoming narcissism. It is important for us to discuss Women’s Mental Health and the unique challenges women face such as work-life balance after a baby, marriage, female friendships, and everything that comes with being a woman in a modern world. There are many more pressures in society for women to have it all and it’s important we talk about these things.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS AND BECOME A FEMALE FOUNDER?

WHAT UNIQUE PROBLEM DOES YOUR BUSINESS SOLVE, AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO ADDRESS IT?

Many people in the US experience skin allergies in the form of rashes - and ingredients in personal care products are among the most common causes. Many of these ingredients don’t need to be there and others could easily be substituted. As dermatologists, we are confronted by this problem everyday. Patients come into our clinics having spent thousands of dollars trying to find products that didn’t aggravate their skin; often using products labeled “hypoallergenic”, “dermatologist tested”, and “clean” only to find out many of these products were the problem. We knew it didn’t have to be this way and felt compelled to use our unique expertise in skin allergy and personal care products to solve this common clinical problem. We truly never set out to be entrepreneurs. We are all practicing dermatologists involved in research and education and are very fulfilled by our jobs. We are also all moms! We definitely have our hands full now but every step of this journey has felt so worthwhile because the three of us believe so deeply in what we are trying to accomplish with VETTED.

Skincare options for patients with sensitive skin or contact dermatitis are limited. We knew there were no truly hypoallergenic, high-performance skincare lines available on the market. We thought we should create something that had powerhouse ingredients like vitamin C, retinoids, and niacinamide; omitting the allergens in so many products unsuitable for those with skin sensitivities. One of the repercussions of the clean beauty movement seen frequently in dermatology is an increase in allergic skin rashes to botanicals and essential oils. Most people don’t realize that botanicals are actually a common cause of contact allergies! We understood why terms like “clean beauty” were important and appealing but we felt the concept (and these products) was missing a critical, scientific lens; are they hypoallergenic. We wanted to make products that combined sustainability with what we know is also good for the skin - non-irritating, non-toxic, and truly hypoallergenic ingredients. At VETTED, we say: “If it’s not hypoallergenic, it’s not clean.”

E L L A I NS P I RE S / I S S UE 31

WHAT SETS YOUR BRAND APART FROM COMPETITORS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? The FDA sets no minimum standard for commonly-used marketing terms like “hypoallergenic;” it means different things to different brands. It is not uncommon to find a product labeled “hypoallergenic” but contains a common allergen. This confuses consumers. We wanted to elevate the industry standard by setting the strictest criteria of hypoallergenicity based on the most recent allergen prevalence data. Our products are more hypoallergenic than anything out there - including leading common dermatologistrecommended brands in the marketplace and doctor-developed brands.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS FOR YOUR BUSINESS, AND WHAT MILESTONES HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SO FAR? We launched in March of this year. We’ve had sales since day one and we believe it is because VETTED fulfills a real need in the marketplace. We are expanding into dermatology and allergy practices. We want to become a trusted brand for hypoallergenic, high-performance, and clean skincare. Our ultimate goal is to become the number one dermatologist-recommended skincare brand and to sell in retailers like Sephora.

IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU COLLABORATE OR CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES? Many of our vendors and consultants are female founders themselves. We are collaborating with dermatologists and skin experts in social media, many of whom are females.

HOW DOES YOUR BUSINESS ALIGN WITH YOUR PERSONAL VALUES AND ASPIRATIONS? We all believe in using our unique talents and knowledge base to better the world. We hope to disrupt the beauty industry by raising the bar for ingredient transparency by creating products that are safe for everyone; including those with sensitive skin. We

are doing it on our own, on our terms, in the evening, between patient visits, and school drop offs because we believe in VETTED. We stand for selectivity and integrity; we carefully vet all our products using the most recent data on allergenic and irritant potential and toxicity.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR BRAND AND HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CONTINUE GROWING AND EVOLVING? We want to become the number one dermatologist-recommended skincare brand. Dermatologists and allergists immediately understand our value proposition and the unique void we fill in the market; they are a trusted source of product recommendations for patients. At this time, we focus on getting our messaging out there and partnering with doctors; specifically dermatologists and allergists. We also are doing DTC sales and hope to move into retail in the future.

Carina Woodruff, MD, is a Harvard, Yale and UCSF-trained dermatologist with a special interest and expertise in skin allergies and patch testing. She is a practicing general medical and surgical dermatologist and the director of the Epiphany Skin Allergy Institute. Her co-founders are also dermatologists and both based in San Francisco. Dr. Nina Botto is an expert in contact dermatitis, and an associate professor at the University of California. Dr. Lindy Fox, is a medical dermatologist and professor at the University of California. They formed the company when they were faculty at UCSF, about 10 years ago. Their company is a testament to the power of female mentorship and friendship! I am a Texas-born and raised singer/songwriter/mother and entrepreneur raised on a foundation of country, blues, gospel, and rock ‘n’ roll music. I grew up in a large family in Dallas, TX; I am the fourth of five children. I have two wonderful parents who taught me the importance of hard work and giving back. Since I was a little girl, my entire life was based around being a performer. I was always writing songs in my journal, blaring Dolly Parton or Shania Twain, and putting on shows for anyone who would listen. I paused to go to college at The University of Texas and majored in Journalism. There I honed in on my craft of writing. Immediately after college, I went straight back to music and have had quite the journey; from performing children’s music to composing original music (going from living in New York to Nashville, to the West Coast, then back to Texas) to becoming a mother to four wonderful children, then becoming a single mother and writing this new album (which drops this Fall). WHAT WERE SOME OF THE MAJOR OBSTACLES THAT YOU FACED ON YOUR JOURNEY TO SUCCESS?

I have met very few people in the music industry who can say their road to success has been smooth. I’ve gained the experience necessary to truly stand in the light of my artistry through the many bumps and twists I’ve encountered along my journey; both personally and professionally. When I started, at a young age, I didn’t realize the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to promote the music is equal, if not more, to what you put into making the record. With my debut album, I made the mistake of not hiring a solid team to push and promote the music. I experienced a divorce and was very fortunate to have a loving place to land. As a single mother to my four wonderful children, leaving a legacy behind for them is one of the main driving forces in my everyday life. Additionally, I wanted to use my voice for something positive in the world and help pay it forward. So I am the creator and founder of the Twice the Love Foundation where we focus on the social, emotional, and financial stressors of being a single parent and helping those who need assistance to get back on their feet again.

And lastly, I think it is super important to understand your strengths, lean into them, and continue to make progress toward growth. I think you are even more powerful when you lean into your strengths AND make the effort to improve in areas where you are not as strong. It provides a foundation to get you through any obstacle life or business throws you. I think that you should be learning something new every day. Also, if you are the smartest person in the room, then you should move to another room; it is so important to surround yourself with people who are more knowledgable and experienced. Never stop learning. IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU COLLABORATE OR CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER WOMEN?

In my business, the ability to collaborate with fierce independent women is endless. Through Twice the Love Foundation, I have had the opportunity to meet so many amazing women; I am looking forward to creating more experiences and partnerships as the foundation continues to grow. My sister, Molly Duvall Thomas, and I own Sisters of Red - a multimedia brand known for sharing our love of fashion, design, travel, and all things beautiful. We have been fortunate to partner with people like Camila McConaughey of Women of Today and have raised money for multiple charities while inspiring women to work together. We are always stronger when we support each other! Additionally, I am the creator and founder of Aunty E, a children’s entertainment brand. Aunty E and the world of Harmony Hills is looking forward to partnering with many women owned businesses just as fiercely independent as Aunty E!

WHAT LESSONS OR INSIGHTS CAN ASPIRING MUSICIANS DRAW FROM THE STORY OF HOW YOU OVERCAME OBSTACLES?

Looking back on my career, three qualities within myself have allowed me to keep pushing forward every day. The first is my willingness to evolve as a person, artist, and professional while preserving a true sense of self and family. Secondly, I have a lot of perseverance. I have been knocked down a few times on my journey, and the ability to dust myself off and keep pushing forward is something I am proficient at doing at this stage in my life. It is important not to sweat the small stuff; always learn from your mistakes, but don’t let them define you;

My newest single Girls Weekend has given us the chance to collaborate with women everywhere while we celebrate the power of female friendships!

I Survived Covid

I am Janette... I am a survivor and I am a miracle! I am a Wedding Photographer and Planner. I am a mother of three beautiful children, our little one being a miracle herself. I am finding my voice and my way to inspire everyone I can with an emphasis on Women.

L E T ’ S S TA R T AT T H E B EG I N N I N G: H O W D I D YO U F E E L W H E N YO U F I R S T S TA R T E D E X P E R I E N C I N G S Y M P T O M S O F CO V I D -19 ? It’s been tough to sit here and write this; even after a year, I feel melancholic. On October 29th, 2021 I was scheduled to photograph a wedding. A couple of minutes after I got home I began feeling sick, tired, and weak. I walked to my room and slept; I was 25 weeks pregnant at the time. Initially, I thought my fatigue had something to do with my pregnancy - maybe I was just exhausted. Earlier that day, I had been experiencing a sharp pain on the left side near my rib cage but I ignored it. The next day, October 30th, I took my two children to a Halloween party. We were there for about 20 minutes when all of a sudden the pain in my left rib cage came back - it was excruciating. I went home and rested. The next day was October 31st and the kids wanted to go trick or treating on Halloween. By then all I remember was not being able to stand because I was so weak. All I wanted to do was sleep. I managed to schedule a COVID rapid test at a nearby CVS. I received the results that same day: I had COVID. I called the paramedics because I could not longer tolerate the pain everything hurt. At the hospital they said I was dehydrated and provided IV fluids which made me feel a little better. But the next day, I felt the same pain again. I cannot tell you what happened those first couple of days but I do have text messages with my daughter. I’m crying reading them now, it hurts to relive the moment but I remind myself that my Heavenly Father has a purpose for me; that’s why I am still here. On November 2nd I went to a different hospital - same thing was done: I was given IV fluids, written prescriptions, and then I was sent home. On November 3rd (or 4th) I called the paramedics. When they arrived, all I remember was being told they could not take me to the hospital again because nothing could be done for me - and that I needed to suck it up. Those words really stuck with me. According to text messages to my daughter, I asked her to sleep with her phone on in case I needed her and asked her to bring me more ice. November 5th, I asked her for a bin to use

for the bathroom because I could not get up. November 6th I texted her, ‘my shoes and small blanket’. I had a fever; my texts were getting shorter and no longer making any sense. I wasn’t eating anything, I couldn’t. I remember getting in the shower to lower my temperature and I was crying; it hurt so much! November 6th was the day I could no longer take the pain; my oxygen dropped to 80. I did not want to call the paramedics again because I did not want to be told that I needed to suck it up. I called a Lyft and I could barely walk to the car. I entered the building and sat in the nearest seat I could find. I called Labor & Delivery to help me, I could not make it anymore. After November 6th at 12:30pm, I do not remember anything. After November 9th, I stopped responding to text messages.

H O W LO N G W E R E YO U H O S PI TA L I Z E D? I was admitted November 6, 2021 and discharged February 4, 2022 (3 months). W H AT WA S T H E E X PE R I E N C E L I K E F O R YO U ? I was conscious for three days after I was hospitalized. I know this because I have text messages with family and friends. On November 9th, I was put in a medically induced coma. I don’t remember anything after that. What I do recall is having many dreams, which became nightmares. After two months, the doctors started to slowly wake me up. They would ask me if I knew where I was and what happened to me. I knew I was in the hospital but wasn’t quite sure what happened. It was January 15, 2022 when I first became aware of my surroundings. After that day I received physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. I still had my trach - the doctors weren’t sure for how long. Many said I would have it all my life. Apart from all of that, I was confused about my baby. I was concerned that all the medicines I was receiving would affect the baby but every day my husband would tell me the baby had been born! I was so confused! How was the baby born? When? Why? My baby was born via C-section on December 8, 2021, just shy of 30 weeks. She was due February 17, 2022. When my baby was born, she was not breathing but the doctors took good care of her. She was in the Picu/Nicu for two months. I did not get a chance to meet her in person until she was discharged from the hospital at two months old. Since I was in an induced coma, I don’t have any recollection of what was done to me but somehow my subconscious must have still been working. I had a vivid dream about my baby being born and me telling the doctors that it was too soon for her to be born - in my dream, she wasn’t breathing at birth (which is exactly what happened in reality). I also recall dreaming about returning home. I would make my way every day in my dream following clues from an elder telling me to try different ways to get home. When I woke up I felt confused. Numb. When the nurses and therapists told me my baby was born I felt numb. They would show me pictures of my baby, but I felt numb. I was so scared because I did not feel anything. Why was this? I would spend hours looking at her pictures and wonder if I would feel anything when I met her. I prayed and prayed. But when the day came to meet her my heart melted! I had feelings! I was so numb from all the medicines I had been given; but after meeting my baby for the first time, I finally felt normal again. W H AT H E L PE D YO U G E T T H R O U G H YO U R H O S PI TA L I Z AT I O N ? My faith and my family. My faith is what kept that spark alive for me to continue to fight both physically and emotionally. My husband and my children were always by my side, I felt such relief seeing them. Even though I couldn’t move or talk, I would pray and pray to gain strength to be able to go home and be with my family and to be able to care for them as I used to. My advice to others: don’t lose hope, pray, keep positive. Although I don’t remember much, all my text messages were filled with positivity and faith. When I regained consciousness, I prayed and prayed for a fast recovery. Because of my condition, sometimes it would take me days to finish a prayer. But I always did. WHAT PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE HAVE YOU GAINED AFTER YOUR EXPERIENCE? Life is beautiful. Enjoy every moment, good or bad. I pay more attention to every situation and try to get the best out of it. I love my family and I want to continue making memories together, so when I’m gone, they will remember our experiences and all the good I did during my time here.

Making a Difference: T H E I NSPI R I NG JOU R N EY OF CH I LDR E N’S CA NCER F U N D

WHAT SPECIFIC CHALLENGES HAS CHILDREN’S CANCER FUND FACED IN THEIR MISSION, AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM? Children's Cancer Fund (CCF) has found that overcoming challenges requires a combination of creativity, adaptability, collaboration, and resilience. As most nonprofits do, CCF relies on volunteers to assist in accomplishing their mission. However, attracting and retaining volunteers can be challenging. To overcome this, CCF has implemented volunteer management systems and by creating a positive organizational culture, volunteers have allowed CCF to expand their reach and capacity to fulfill their mission. Their dedication, skills, and commitment significantly contribute to the success of the organization, making a difference in the lives of children fighting cancer. CAN YOU PROVIDE EXAMPLES OF INDIVIDUALS WHOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN TRANSFORMED BY THE WORK OF CHILDREN’S CANCER FUND? Children’s Cancer Fund was founded in 1982 by a coalition of parents whose children were receiving cancer treatment at Children’s Medical Center. The organizers have since been joined by community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and health professionals. Lisa Prather joined the CCF family in 1988 as a fashion show model. Now she’s a cancer survivor paying it forward. Lisa was diagnosed with yolk sac carcinoma in 1981, but after 10 months of chemotherapy and a tough surgery, she was officially in remission. Following her journey, her father helped found CCF and her mother quickly jumped in to help make the fashion show what it is today. Lisa continued to be involved in the fashion show each year, and as she grew older, assisted in a volunteer capacity. Now, Lisa is a part of CCF’s Board of Directors, where she is able to participate in various aspects of the organization and assist with certain legal matters – combining her profession with her passion. More than 30 years later, Lisa is happy, healthy and honored to be supporting an organization whose prime focus is on research to end childhood cancer. WHAT ARE SOME WAYS THAT READERS CAN GET INVOLVED AND SUPPORT THE MISSION OF CHILDREN’S CANCER FUND?

DONATE Remember a loved one’s life, celebrate a special someone, or recognize the courage of a friend or relative who is so bravely fighting cancer and make a thoughtful donation to CCF in any denomination. When your donation is received, a personalized tribute card will be sent to the person or family honored, notifying them of your donation. PARTICIPATE CCF hosts numerous events throughout the year to raise funds for pediatric cancer research and patient care programs. With the support from community members, organizations and generous donations, our events raise money to provide the necessary funding for life-saving research and treatment programs that impact our children in North Texas. We welcome guests from across the country to our Annual Gala featuring live and silent auctions, a raffle drawing, a fashion show featuring patients receiving treatment at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and their celebrity escorts, dinner and drinks, and live entertainment. You don’t want to miss this wonderful event! SERVE Donating your time or talent is a great way to support CCF.

Whether you can give a few hours each month or a few days each year, we are always looking for help. Whether it’s hosting an event benefiting us, helping with event planning for the Annual Gala, serving on the Board of Directors, or telling your friends about CCF, any donation of your time is greatly appreciated. ”
