Letter From The Editor

When I moved to Dallas in 2009, I never knew I would become a creative entrepreneur (first as a web designer for small business owners, then later as a women’s magazine editor). As I began to network, I met a lot of great women in my community. In those meetings, women shared their struggles and triumphs with me. I wondered: What if we could create a platform for women to share their personal stories of growth, progress, determination, and success? Along with elegant photography, my goal was to create a safe place to share those everyday stories no one was talking about in major media outlets. The result? ELLA Inspires is an online magazine that celebrates professional women and entrepreneurs!

Our indie magazine has featured thirty-two inspiring, powerful, flawed—yet fabulous— professionals, entrepreneurs, influencers, mentors, teachers, beauty queens, artists, celebrities, personalities, and models on its covers. These women shared one common trait: the courage to pursue their dreams and take life by the horns. Thank you for sharing your lives, stories, and triumphs with ELLA. We are eager to show you what we have planned for this year; thank you for being part of this fantastic journey!

WAINTX GIRLS IN AVIATION DAY EVENT RECAP

Have you ever been told the sky is the limit? Jenn Shull is one of the few, yet growing number of female airline pilots that is putting the well-known phrase to the test! Living in Dallas, Texas, and based out of LAX, Shull is an airline pilot on the Boeing 737. Through her love for aviation, Shull has made it her life’s mission to inspire others to reach for the sky.

“I began flying 15 years ago just for fun,” says Shull.

Shull turned her dream of reaching for the sky into reality. “I went from a cubicle to the cockpit, and I’ve never looked back. I hope to educate and share my love and passion for flying; to peel back the curtain to the general public of otherwise unseen components of aviation. There is a lot of misinformation, confusion, and regulations that can make for an unnecessarily frustrating travel experience. Travel should be fun!” Adds Shull.

Shull, being a certified flight instructor, is a volunteer for the events hosted by The Women in Aviation North Texas (WAINTX). While the number of female aviators is small, the impact WAI is having on young women is growing. “There are only 6% of female airline pilots, less than 4% female aircraft mechanics, and less than 15% of female Air Traffic Controllers. Only a fraction of these percentages are Women Of Color,” says Lindsay Davis, the Women in Aviation North Texas Chapter Board President and Event Coordinator.

Women in Aviation North Texas (WAINTX) is aiming to expand its reach to more young women and teens of the next generation who aren’t usually exposed to aviation as a possible

career path. “Only a fraction of these percentages are women of color. WAINTX is trying to expand its reach to get more girls and teens of the next generation exposed to these career paths that aren’t necessarily usually recommended to women. We just want to show them we did it and it’s possible for you too!” Adds Davis.

If you are not located in North Texas, here is the good news: this is an international event and it is hosted at airports around the world. Search “Girls in Aviation Day + your city” on Google to find the closest event location near you. On September 23, 2023, the North Dallas Chapter of Women in Aviation welcomed 978 young ladies ages 8-18 for Girls in Aviation Day! This fabulous event occurred in the Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center, located at Dallas Executive Airport.

“Each year, approximately 175 pilots, air traffic controllers, aircraft mechanics, and other aviators, volunteer and lead these young ladies through immersive activities where they can learn the phonetic alphabet, how to calculate weight, the balance of an aircraft, basics of how an aircraft engine creates power, how to dress like a pilot, and many more fun and engaging activities,” says Shull.

“In addition to the activities, there are static displays of different aircraft, speakers, vendors, and a food truck!” Adds Shull.

Some of the 42 vendors in attendance last year included the Dallas Police Department, Envoy Air, CAE, Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, NGPA, North Texas TRACON, and many others.

“This is a very special event and so fun and exciting to see the eyes of these young ladies brighten when they enter the hangar!”

“Even if they don’t want to do something in aviation, you can see how this event ignites a spark in their imagination and dreams of what potential they do have and makes them aware there are so many opportunities out there to support their dreams and to reach for the skies!” Shull added.

Women in Aviation North Texas (WAINTX) is looking forward to hosting its next event on September 22, 2024.

Lenisa Careaga is a professional mermaid performer, a PADI certified Mermaid Instructor, and underwater photographer born and raised in Gig Harbor, Washington. She created Mermaid Dream School as an embodiment of the magic, wonder, and sense of adventure that mermaids represent. The school also serves as a platform for education, environmental stewardship, and spreading joy.

Lenisa hopes to share the joy and magic of being a mermaid and create everlasting memories with her students. She wants everyone who enrolls in Mermaid Dream School to gain swimming skills, an education and awareness of our earth’s oceans, and a new perspective of peace and confidence.

I grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington, a small fishing village surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. My connection to the emeraldgreen waters, lush forests, and charming waterfront scenery was genuinely magical. I sincerely appreciated the environment and marine life from a very young age; developing a deep-rooted connection to the sea. I loved boating, swimming, and collecting massive amounts of shells.

The gentle, rocking motion of a boat and watching the water create little waves was incredibly soothing and re-invigorating for me. Exploring the area’s various islands, beaches, and hiking trails provided endless adventures and opportunities to connect with nature. The presence of diverse wildlife, including deer, birds, seals, and orca whales, added to the enchantment of my surroundings.

“My upbringing in Gig Harbor laid the foundation for my strong connection to nature and the sea; shaping my love for mermaids and the enchanting world they represent.”

I was raised in a large and culturally diverse family, which has been a rich and fulfilling experience. My mother, of Norwegian and French descent, and my father, of Tongan and Polynesian descent, added layers of cultural richness to my identity. I learned to embrace my Polynesian heritage later in life, and finding that connection brought a sense of pride and wholeness to my identity.

My fascination with mermaids and imagination has been a central part of my childhood. Playing make-believe mermaids and being drawn to mermaidthemed films like The Little Mermaid  and  Splash  nurtured my love for the mystical and magical world of mermaids.

These films and characters, particularly Ariel from The Little Mermaid, captured my imagination and inspired me. I even owned a fabric tail version and necklace similar to Mermaid Madison seen in the movie Splash! Looking back it is beautiful how these childhood interests and pop culture influences have shaped my identity and ultimately led me to pursue my dreams as a professional mermaid.

My parents played a significant role in shaping the person I have become, instilling valuable lessons and beliefs that have guided me throughout my life. Their emphasis on loving what I do, believing in myself, and following my heart echoes throughout my journey to becoming a successful businesswoman. My mother’s nurturing nature and unwavering support created an environment that helped me thrive in various aspects of my life, whether in academics, sports, or pursuing other passions. Her presence at sporting events and other extracurricular activities reinforced my confidence and self-worth.

THE EARLY YEARS

My parents shaped me into a compassionate, strong, and purpose-driven individual who spreads joy and positivity to others through my work. I fondly remember traveling to Hawaii, which profoundly impacted me. I felt a deep connection to the island and its people. At the luau, I noticed people who resembled me, creating a deep sense of belonging and cultural appreciation for me. The healing power of swimming in the ocean and hearing the melodies of humpback whales further solidified my connection to the natural world and its spiritual significance.

The transformative experience of becoming a mermaid for the first time on Maui speaks to the magic and wonder that traveling can bring. Experiences like these left a lasting impression on me and played a significant role in shaping my passions.

My parents nurtured our sense of exploration and curiosity through family trips. These shared experiences strengthened our bonds and created lasting memories I cherish forever. Overall my upbringing was immersed in travel and cultural exploration, which has contributed to my sense of self, my appreciation for diversity, and my passion for embracing the magic of the world around me; ultimately guiding me to becoming a professional mermaid. My family’s commitment to exploring diverse cultures and traveling the world enriched my life with invaluable experiences and perspectives.

Through my business,  Mermaid Dream School, I provide unique and memorable experiences by emphasizing creativity, imagination, and joy. I am passionate about making mermaid dreams come true for people of all ages. As a professional mermaid performer, a PADI-certified Mermaid Instructor, and an underwater photographer, I offer a comprehensive range of services that cater to clients looking for entertainment and/ or educational services. I am committed to ensuring safety and proficiency when teaching mermaid skills to my students through PADI Mermaid certification courses. The partnerships I have established, such as with the Children’s Aquarium in Dallas, allow me to bring the magic of mermaids to a broader audience and create special experiences for children and families. The emphasis on video, imagery, and mermaid photoshoots adds excitement and wonder to my other services.

The heartfelt letters, artwork, and gifts I have received from children and attendees of my mermaid events bring me so much happiness and inspiration. Educating others about the ocean and promoting environmental awareness through clean-up events further underscores my commitment to making a positive impact on my community and beyond.

My experience as an international mermaid competitor sets me apart and adds depth to my skill as a mermaid. I’ve competed in prestigious industry events such as Miss Mermaid USA and Miss Mermaid International. Becoming Miss Mermaid USA was an incredible milestone, it was the result of my dedication to mermaiding and engaging audiences. Competing in Miss Mermaid International in Egypt, alongside talented women from across the globe, deepened my appreciation for the international mermaiding community.

Winning the title of “Best Friendship/Miss Congeniality” was significant to me. It was not just about performance but also about fostering a positive atmosphere and building genuine connections with fellow competitors. This experience inspired me to pursue my dream of opening a mermaid school.

THE JOURNEY

My journey as a professional commercial actress and model, represented by The Campbell Agency in Texas, adds another layer to my career. I’ve had the privilege to explore various roles, each one offering a new opportunity to grow and diversify my skill set.

Incorporating my “mersona” (mermaid persona) into my acting work allows me to combine my love for mermaids with my passion for performance. This unique blend has enabled me to create memorable and impactful experiences for audiences through different mediums. Blending mermaid performances with my acting career has allowed me to leverage my talents in new and creative ways. I always strive to bring authenticity and creativity to everything I do, which has set me apart in the entertainment industry.

“I understand the healing power of creativity, imagination, and connection. My inner child energy enables me to relate to children on a deeper level; providing them with a source of comfort, inspiration, and healing. Through my experiences, I’ve discovered that creativity serves as a powerful tool for self-expression and coping with life’s challenges.”

Despite facing challenges, including surviving domestic violence, I have emerged as a survivor with a resilient spirit. My healing and journey of selfdiscovery has been fueled by a desire to overcome adversity and positively impact myself and others.

My academic pursuits at the University of Washington and Seattle Central College, where I studied art and graduated with an art degree, have equipped me with the skills needed to harness the therapeutic potential of artistic expression. My professors recognized my ability to connect with others and saw in me the potential to become a healer in my own right. The concept of the Aloha spirit, characterized by a deep sense of happiness and goodwill, resonates within me and influences my business. Drawing from this cultural ethos, I’ve created a business that aims to spread magic, light, and love to others.

As a PADI Mermaid Instructor, I not only provide mermaid entertainment but also offer valuable PADI Mermaid Certifications (mermaid lessons) for both children and adults. With a certification in CPR and PADI mermaid training, my focus on safety reassures clients that their experience will be both enjoyable and secure. Additionally, the inclusion of underwater videos and pictures adds a special touch to the certification process, allowing clients to cherish their mermaid experience for years to come. I focus on special touches and pay close attention to detail which make each mermaid experience magical for my clients. My investment in high-quality mermaid tails and swim gear provides my clients an authentic and immersive experience. The wide range of styles and materials available for mermaid tails highlights the diversity of options and the attention to detail required in tailoring each experience to meet the needs and preferences of my clients.

In the serene yet formidable waters of the Florida Straits, a story of unparalleled resilience and tenacity unfolds in the Netflix movie “NYAD.” This captivating film chronicles the incredible journey of Diana Nyad, a woman who dared to dream the impossible – and succeeded. At the core of her story lies a powerful message: the importance of attempting and reaching your dreams, no matter the obstacles. Diana Nyad’s ambition to swim from Cuba to Florida was not a whimsical desire, but a profound calling. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS AND BECOME A FEMALE FOUNDER?

Meredith: We both always dreamed of owning our own business. Our collective educational backgrounds included early childhood specialties, and we worked in private education here in Dallas. Additionally, my background attending an allgirls college preparatory school, Harpeth Hall in Nashville, TN, was integral to my desire to found a female-led business. Our shared experiences led us to frequently discuss the need to professionalize and streamline the world of “tutoring”. We were also inspired by the families who had already trusted us to educate their children. Sara: Our education model is straightforward: one-on-one, in-home, play-based learning, and we are adamant about this model for a reason- we see results! One-on-one learning is shown to enhance engagement, encourage questions, and

increase confidence, plus it is entirely personalized for your child’s age and educational goals. Out of college, I taught in a Title 1 classroom, where all 22 Pre-K students needed a different level of differentiated instruction. It made me research multiple intelligences and learning styles, and I am proud to be able to reach every child where they are and drive them to achieve.

CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE MOMENT THAT SOLIDIFIED YOUR DECISION TO PURSUE ENTREPRENEURSHIP?

Meredith: My father is a healthcare entrepreneur, so I grew up with inside knowledge about what it takes to start your own business. I saw firsthand how your name and integrity are everything. He and my mother encouraged me to be respectful, punctual, and a leader and gave me the best education. I took advantage of my learning opportunities and envisioned owning my own business. Still, I could not have done it without Sara. Sara and I are perfect complements as business partners. We are incredibly aligned in our values and educational philosophies but bring unique backgrounds and strengths to KG Private Educators. This allows us to offer specialized support while remaining aligned around common goals and practices.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS FOR YOUR BUSINESS, AND WHAT MILESTONES HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SO FAR?

We define success as a student who is ready for Kindergarten! We are one of the only education companies specializing in early childhood, especially 2-5-year-olds, and that is why we are so passionate about children “graduating” our program. We want our students to have the foundational skills that make them confident and ready for the private school classroom. It is both challenging and exciting when a student reaches this milestone. The hardest part of teaching is parting with a student who has grown so much. Still, we are fortunate to often teach younger siblings, cousins, or friends at the same schools, keeping the KG Private Educators network connected.

HOW DO YOU ENVISION YOUR BUSINESS POSITIVELY IMPACTING OR CONTRIBUTING TO A LARGER CAUSE?

Sara: We see our company and brand as solving two issues. We want to educate students and be supportive business owners, providing an alternative work environment for excellent educators. Meredith and I have seen many people from our education programs leave the world of teaching for many reasons: the demanding schedule, lack of administration support, and disagreement with educational philosophy. Meredith and I look to solve those problems for teachers who want to work for us. We tout a flexible schedule and rave about the more personalized relationships with students. Many women we have interviewed are mothers, and after just having my first child as well, I want to create an opportunity for women to thrive both at work and at home.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR BRAND, AND HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CONTINUE GROWING AND EVOLVING?

Our vision has always been to provide the highest-quality education for children ages 2-5. We strive to prepare them to be leaders in their Kindergarten classrooms. Our brand’s evolution is to expand recognition in the Dallas community, with our core tenets never changing. Our future is our students becoming leaders at their schools and, eventually, the entire community!

We have made the most incredible relationships! We developed a partnership with Elise McVeigh of Mrs. McVeigh’s Manners, and she has been a guiding mentor, providing us with valuable insight and advice.. Tori Pendergrass of KidArt and Pigment School for the Arts welcomed us to teach a spring break camp with her, which continued into a Meadowbrook-specific enrichment the following fall. These women have spent decades in the Dallas community, building their businesses and earning the admiration of the families they teach. Our ultimate goal is to one day be able to pay forward the guidance and grace these women showed us in our early days by guiding other new businesses in the early childhood community.

KG Private Educators is owned and operated by early childhood education professionals who decided to leave the traditional classroom for a more personalized student experience. Having studied a multitude of educational methods, co-owners Sara King and Meredith Griswold have unique experiences to engage students with a multi-faceted approach to become well-rounded learners. As a little brown Latina girl facing a new country, a new language, and a new culture (and a very macho-dominated environment), I was no stranger to feeling the abuse and the oppression that brings. I knew I had to work hard for what I wanted to accomplish and become. I was motivated to channel that negative energy into driving myself forward.

WHAT UNIQUE PROBLEM DOES YOUR BUSINESS SOLVE, AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO ADDRESS IT?

My mother started this business 20 years ago, and when she was ready to retire, she offered it to me. I started training with her and noticed that her clientele was career-driven men and women with families who didn’t want to come home after a long day at the office and still had to put a load of laundry to wash. This extra step quickly became our signature service. My motivation is knowing we are bringing peace of mind to each one of our clients by providing a clean and organized home!

One day, sitting in my cubicle at my 8-5 job, I realized I was helping my boss realize his dream. I didn’t want to wait 20 years to realize my dream. I decided to give my two-week notice and took some time to plan out my business plan, and Organized Homes by Sinti was born. I woke up one restless night and decided I wanted to teach people how to live a more organized and clean lifestyle. I thought I was inventing something here. Little did I know there was a whole community already doing this, and I have been able to form incredible friendships with amazing organizers and businesswomen I’ve met throughout my journey.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS FOR YOUR BUSINESS, AND WHAT MILESTONES HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SO FAR?

Success is never a straight line; there are a lot of curves and ups and downs. We have learned to overcome obstacles, learn from them, and keep improving. Creating a healthy business relationship with our clients is definitely a huge win for us. For us, taking something that is usually not a luxury career and transforming it into a six-figure business has been our most significant milestone.

I love supporting other businesses. I’m a firm believer in having enough for everyone to succeed! I used to be part of an orthopedic practice that provided the typical run-of-the-mill care for all musculoskeletal concerns with a cookie-cutter treatment plan. As I was going through my daily routines at work, I saw that there was a gap that needed to be addressed with patients when they would leave with the treatment plan. There was more to the injury/fracture recovery than what was only being addressed, and I needed more of what I could provide. DFW Sports Medicine was founded to provide a more comprehensive type of care that not only addresses the musculoskeletal concerns at hand but also be unique in my approach and provide a broader scope of treatment options for my patients.

WHAT UNIQUE PROBLEM DOES YOUR BUSINESS SOLVE, AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO ADDRESS IT?

DFW Sports Medicine is not just another orthopedic practice. We provide a comprehensive approach to any musculoskeletal issue that a patient walks in with.  We not only focus on the patient’s concern but also the external factors that could affect the recovery process. Furthermore, there is a focus on the prevention aspect of the injury as well as the maintenance of the recovery itself. We were motivated to address this as we saw in our previous practice that this piece of the puzzle was missing from our patient care. We not only focus on musculoskeletal injuries but also have branched out into the wellness aspect of the patient as this also influences a patient’s ability to continue being active in their daily life.  Furthermore, we offer minimally invasive, cutting-edge technology procedures as part of our treatment plans for those who are candidates which leads to faster recovery times in comparison to surgery.  This translates into patients having less downtime and better outcomes.

HOW DOES YOUR BUSINESS ALIGN WITH YOUR PERSONAL VALUES AND ASPIRATIONS?

My decision to pursue entrepreneurship was inspired by another female physician colleague.  She is an excellent physician who wanted to provide her patients with superb quality care and not be limited by the administration, which did not comprehend what it meant to serve patients and only saw revenue as the primary objective.  That was a defining moment for me to know that I could also push boundaries for my patients and serve them how they were meant to be truly cared for.

My vision for the future of my brand is to be recognized for providing top-quality comprehensive care for anyone of any age group with any musculoskeletal concerns in the DFW metroplex.  I am committed to continuing to grow and evolve by immersing myself in the continuing education of novel treatments that are available for my patients.  Furthermore, with the innovation of AI, I can cut down tremendously on administrative work such as battling insurance for approvals for procedures/medications, which leaves me ample time to allot for patient care and educate myself on any novel treatments that are available for my patients.

LEADING WITH PURPOSE

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS AND BECOME A FEMALE FOUNDER?

My mother is a natural-born hustler. In 1975, she started importing fine jewelry with only a few jade pieces. Eventually, she grew the business into one of the largest and most well-known import wholesalers of fine jewelry in the Midwest, expanding into pearls, diamonds, and precious and semi-precious stones. I admire her defying stereotypes and beating the odds as a Chinese immigrant female business owner. I have been around jewelry and the business my whole life, often accompanying my parents on sales trips and conventions, tidying up inventory, and, on at least one occasion, staying up late to string pearl necklaces! However, I am very grateful that they strongly encouraged my academic pursuits and the establishment of my own career. I gained over 20 years of experience across disciplines and industries, including establishing fashion, dining, and entertainment partnerships for the American Express Centurion “Black” Card and launching Black Twine, an experiential marketing agency based in NYC. I worked with Martha Stewart, Eva Chen, and many other lifestyle and fashion brands on launches and events.

Looking back, these experiences have led me to this moment of starting Maimère. Maimère allows me to continue the legacy of my parents’ footprint in the fine jewelry industry while launching a fresh new fine jewelry brand aimed directly at consumers, leveraging my background and experiences.

WHAT UNIQUE PROBLEM DOES YOUR BUSINESS SOLVE, AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO ADDRESS IT?

I am surrounded by friends who are starting to explore fine jewelry. It may be due to the life stage we are all currently in, where we seek to invest in a few quality pieces rather than accumulate many items. Therefore, when my parents prepared for retirement and liquidated a portion of their inventory, I hosted several online and in-person trunk shows. To my surprise, the level of engagement and interest was beyond my expectations. I have to laugh because several friends even accused me of hiding my jewelry connections from them. However, the positive feedback regarding the quality, wearability, and pricing relative to comparable items in the market inspired me to consider launching a consumer-focused version of the business. I was excited about leveraging my family’s wholesale relationships to offer fine jewelry directly to consumers, bypassing traditional luxury retail channels.

Fine jewelry can be intimidating due to the numerous variables influencing its price, including gemstone quality, size, color, finishing, setting, and sourcing. Also, buyers must pay more attention to the significance of skilled craftsmen who meticulously create each jewelry piece. I learned so much from my parents while growing up in the jewelry business. Still, I also had to acquire valuable technical knowledge by completing my gemology certifications with the Gemology Institute of America (GIA). With my training and the advantage of leveraging decades of experience and relationships with only the finest manufacturers worldwide, Maimère is uniquely positioned to offer high-quality classic fine jewelry at an exceptional value.

CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE MOMENT THAT SOLIDIFIED YOUR DECISION TO PURSUE ENTREPRENEURSHIP?

When I was working in a corporate environment, making decisions or even sending out a simple email would often involve numerous stakeholders from various parts of the organization and could take days or weeks. Starting my own business, Black Twine, brought immense satisfaction from a getting things done perspective. For example, one of the most rewarding day-to-day activities was the ability to brainstorm an idea for an email and then send it to our base within minutes. The capacity to swiftly execute ideas and solve problems on the fly captivated me and drew me to entrepreneurship. There is a genuine sense of empowerment from controlling your destiny. Running my own business has enabled me to harness all my skills and has shown me that I can continue learning and growing in ways I didn’t think were possible!
