Assignemnt 3: Fashion Spread Ella Sedman

Fashion Spread Process After reading the brief, I quickly knew I wanted to focus on bags for my accessory. Versatile and interesting, I knew they would work well for a magazine spread in a photographic sense. Around this time, I also researched potential fashion layouts. Exploring the work of Bill Cunningham, his spreads are incredibly colourful and busy with reportage images. Although I really admire his style, I plan to capture more still images instead of a snapshot effect similarly to those shown below. To capture my 20 final images, I went to my local village in Manchester. Although a village, it is incredibly busy within the day and is filled by a wide variety of people with diverse styles. Situated in the heart of the village, I waited by a red bricked wall. When people went past with an interesting bag, I politely asked if they would hang up their bag against the wall so it could be photographed for a fashion feature. Most people were happy to do so meaning I gathered a wide variety of accessories for my fashion picture spread. The contact sheets for this shoot can be viewed on the following page.

Magazine Spread Construction

Wanting to create a collage effect for my images, I firstly processed all of the images through Photoshop, selecting my favourite images of each bag. After this, I exercised the brightness and contrast tools which entailed lowering the brightness and increasing the contrast. Due to the sunny weather conditions, I had to control the highlights whilst insuring the bags colouring possessed enough depth. Once all the 20 images had been altered and saved as TIFF files, I employed the Polygonal Lasso Tool to cut around the bags and then left-clicked, pressing Layer Via Copy. Once two new, blank documents were created, I began to arrange the images across both pages. Once I had a design I was happy with, the images were saved and transferred to this InDesign document. This is where I applied text and finished my magazine spread. Some screen shots documenting this process can be viewed on the following page. Alongside this, my final design can be accessed via the next double-page. Overall I was happy with my final result, I believe the mini-tasks really helped with my confidence when approaching people to ask them to feature. Alongside this, I managed to obtain a wide variety of fashionable women’s bags.
