The History of the Jackson Area Manufacturing Association To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Jackson Area Manufacturing Association ( JAMA), the Ella Sharp Museum will highlight the Association with an exhibit in our Hurst Gallery.

Jackson, was founded in 1937 and was formally incorporated in 1938 after a year of informal meetings.

In addition, the exhibit will focus on the Academy for Manufacturing Careers. Launched in 2005, the Academy is a customized skilled trades-related technical instruction apprenticeship program designed by manufacturers to meet the needs of companies across south-central Michigan.

JAMA began with a membership of 13 area companies and over the years has expanded to serve hundreds of manufacturers and associate member companies across south-central Michigan. Beginning with a brief history of the original 13 companies, the exhibit will continue by exploring Jackson’s rich manufacturing tradition and telling the stories of how manufacturers have overcome challenges by working together. Celebrate Ella’s 155th birthday Merriman Sharp. To honor her memory there will be a special exhibit in the Museum’s Pyron Gallery. Opening February 14, Ella’s 155th birthday, the exhibit will take an up close and personal look into the life of Ella Sharp.

Looking back, and looking forward Happy New Year! When you’re operating a history museum you can’t say, “Out with the old, in with the new.” But we can say we’re taking better care of the old and we have some exciting

initiative on our part to collect oral histories of our community’s senior citizens. We have other exciting exhibits planned for the year as well, including the Michigan Hand Weavers League and Jackson Civic Art Association shows, Art à Loan and a couple of interesting surprises.

‘Flowers That Fly’ from Ernie Muehlmatt Muehlmatt, became fascinated with birds as a young child and a chance encounter with a bird carving exhibition in Salisbury, Maryland, inspired him to create some of the most realistic bird sculptures around. In the late 1960s, he traded his career envisioned the gracefulness of birds. As demand for his work grew, he decided to make wildfowl carving a full time career. Semipalmated Plovers, Ernie Muehlmatt

more than 6,000 wildfowl carvings later, Ernie’s carvings are more popular than ever. Muehlmatt’s progression as a sculptor from the 1960s to the 1980s can be viewed in the Andrews Gallery, where more than 15 of his wood sculptures are on display. His earlier works, although simpler, evoke a sense of reverence for the subject he is so noted for. His later works, more complex and detailed, reiterate the notion that it is not the destination, but the journey.
