Spring is here:

Sugaring& Shearing Welcome Spring’s arrival at the Museum’s annual Sugaring and Shearing Festival on Sunday, March 25, from noon to 4 p.m. Rain or shine, there is something for everyone on the agenda, indoors and outdoors. Spring is a lovely time of year on Farm Lane, especially when our historic buildings come to life with docents and activities. Guests will enjoy springtime traditions such as sheep shearing in front of the tower barn and “sap to syrup demonstrations at the sugar bush. A variety of farm animals will be on our grounds to visit. After families explore outdoor activities, they will love to warm-up inside while doing make ’n’ take projects and checking out our current exhibits. All six of our galleries will be open with free admission for the day. In addition to the exhibits (see back cover for a complete listing) the Jackson Handweavers will be demonstrating their craft in the galleries. Getting a bite to eat in the Community room or Granary restaurant will be a must after working up an appetite. Also in the Community Room, visitors will find Family Engineering, a new addition to Sugaring and Shearing. Hosted by the Jackson County Math and Science Center, Family Engineering offers a free opportunity for the whole family to discover the fun

of engineering through hands-on projects. Participants who complete the projects receive complementary food as their hard earned reward. Family Engineering is one of many educational programs that will be held at the museum to coincide with our The World Takes What Jackson Makes exhibit. See page 5 for more details. Sugaring and Shearing is a free event with nominal fees for food and some activities. For more information, call (517) 787-2320.

Letter from the Executive Director, Charles Aymond

Then and now: a successful year Congratulations! I want to congratulate you, the Jackson community and all of the members, volunteers, donors, visitors, and staff for making 2011 one of the most successful years in the Ella’s history. We saw record attendance at 2011 Sugar and Shearing, Art and Wine (and Beer) Festival, and our Fall Harvest Festival. Certainly the weather helped, but you and the Jackson community made these events break records. Even if you ignore our Ansel Adams exhibit (and how could you), we saw more visitors than we can ever remember. Ansel Adams was the cake, the frosting and the cherry on top with Flagstar Bank as the lead sponsor. Approximately one-half of all the visitors for that exhibit came from outside Jackson County.

From the financial side of our operations, we’ve inserted in this newsletter a brief comment from our auditors (see pg. 6). When our audit report is finalized we will place it on our website so you can examine it in more detail if you so desire. We are aiming to make all of our operations as transparent as possible. There’s still a lot that remains to be done. We’d like to get new signage on Fourth Street and in the Park to assist those who are new to the Museum. We’d like to get Farm Lane restored so that it more accurately reflects what was originally there, and is safer for those who travel on it.

We started our Saturday Series in January 2011 and each week seemed to draw more attendance. The events for this year’s Series are also drawing new enthusiastic crowds. Perhaps you have been at the Museum to see the adult art classes, the children’s art classes, the one-day wonders, the workshops, the Pioneer Living Program and other history classes. Thanks to County National Bank, we had an impressive array of free lectures on a variety of subjects (we have another great series scheduled for this year). This last year we started our Patio Parties on Thursday nights and our winter Third Thursday events will be transformed back into the Patio Parties in late April. These events have brought many new members to the Museum and are showing the community that the Ella is for Everyone.

We have all kinds of ideas about expanded programming for the visual arts and local history but we are also aware that economic conditions are still very strained and many of our local supporters are not in a position to help us as they have in the past. Furthermore, as many of you know, I had some serious surgery in early January. Happily, I’m pleased to report that I am now doing well and am back full time. Those health concerns did take me out of fundraising for a while so I’m hoping you can continue to help us as you have in the past. Remember this is YOUR Museum. I’m proud to be a part of it, and I hope you are too.

“Coyoteâ€?  from  Jim  Eppler When visiting the Andrews Gallery of Wildlife Art, one is immediately aware of the watchdog in the room. A life-size coyote greets the viewer standing on a large vitrine, eyes alert, legs poised in anticipation. The bronze coyote is molded texturally, capturing different tones and colors. Artist Jim Eppler takes the world around us and recreates it for our participation. It is Eppler’s respect and appreciation for nature that allow his art to flow so freely. As a small child growing up in El Paso, Texas, Eppler developed an appreciation for nature, spending hours outdoors, observing animals to sketch and paint. After moving to Lubbock, Eppler earned a BFA from Texas Tech University. Not only is Eppler an accomplished wildlife artist, but also a

well-known portraitist and skilled musician whose works have been commissioned for the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, MCA Records, Mercury Records, Chappell Music, and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

His wildlife art can be seen at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Frederik Meijer Gardens, West Texas Museum Collection and guarding the Andrews Gallery at the Ella Sharp Museum.

cant repairs and improvements to the Museum’s infrastructure. Museum expenses are up from previous years, but this is primarily due to increased spending on the Adams exhibit and infrastructure improvements. Overhead costs have stayed in line with prior years.  Administrative staff has done an excellent job of implementing and maintaining strong controls within the constraints of limited staff size. Overall, the Museum continues to be a good steward of the monies provided to it. Copies of the audited financial statements will be available at the May Annual meeting.
