One roof - all Gods

Five world religions - Buddism - Hinuism - Islam - Christianity - Judism.

One chapel for each one of the world religions and one chapel for everyone who is from another religion or of no religion at all or of any other kind of believe. Gather them all under one roof that binds them together. The chapels are for pray, smaller gatherings, or for anyone who would like to visit, look and learn. The common roof will provide room for larger gatherings, joined pray, events, weddings, baptising’s, name-giving and so on.

commom ground? Water is holy in all religions and societies. It is the base of life and what makes everything grow. Without water there can be no life. Therefore the roof will have a green roof that takes care of the water, filters it before it goes back to the ground.

Situation The buildning is overlaping the bridge and the path on site. However the entire buildning is public and open to everyone.

The windows are the only features that tells the chapels apart.

Each religion gets one chapel. In these a more intimate space is created. All chapel is design to support the type worshiping of the specific religion. They are all public and anyone who wants to go there can regardless of what religion he or she has. One of the main purposes with the chapels is to be able to learn about other religions than our own. The plans are flexible so they may function both as a space for silent pray and as small group rooms for workshops and so on.

Hinduism The windows are placed over the alters of the most common gods.

Judaism The alter is placed to the east and the he plan is central to it. There is a division for mingle before and after the service.

Islam There is a traditional courtyard before entering the hall for pray. This hall is divided in two. One for women and one for men.

Christianity You enter in a porch where you are suppose to surrender all you weapons before you enter the long ship of the church. The long ship and the alter is pointed to the east.

Buddhism This is a simple closed room with space for meditation.

Tous les dieux A flexible space with room for any type of worshiping. It could be used for small gatherings or workshops or just to sit in and have a moment of silence.

In the green roof the water is purified before it goes back to the earth. At every chapel there is a basin where you can wash your hands before entering the chapel.

Rain chain

The water is lead down with the help of chains. The chains also provide a little bit of privacy. Where the chapels meet the rest of the building the chains open up the facade and lets them in

By using the construction to take care of the water the whole building becomes coherent with the believes of the religions and shows that we are not so different as we may have thought. My hope with this project was to increase the understanding and the respect for the different religions. By decreasing the distance from each other perhaps the border between different religions can become less distinct and we can stop thinking of the society as divided in ”we” and ”them” and start to se it as ”us”.
