Workshop 1 Portfolio | Rhino | Modell The task was to simply choose a shape that I found interesting and work with it during the workshop. The Workshop included brief tutorials in Rhino and lectures in how to make a portfolio.

Early sketches I choose this shape. The basic idea is that one large shape is controlled by another.

The Loft Tool|Rhino

Curves

The loft-tool suited my shape well. The tool creates a surface between curves. By controlling the curves the larger shape/surface can be sculptured in a large variety.

Assigment 02 Material, Geometry & Prototyping During this assignment i looked futrher into different materials.

Concrete Cloth

The material consists of a kind of cloth that is soaked in concrete. The material can be shaped relatively freely when wet. When it dries, it becomes fixed and can even carry his own weight. With the help of plastic material, it may be inflated and then take shape. With some modifications a wide variety of shapes can be achieved.

Modify the shape of the cloth to get interesting shapes

Modify the surface as you want. Add windows where you see fit.

Gaps & openings I wanted to work more with openings in my shape. I discovered that by shifting the rings natural openings can be created.

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

Gaps The rings I worked with so far have been organized by the “loft rule. Though the rule allows a large variety of different shapes it has its limitations.

By allowing the shell of the shape to be opened between some of the rings an even larger variety of shapes mat be created.

Apply

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

By modifying some of the rings a different type of shape is created. The gap between the rings becomes an opening and the opening could be one of the three stations.

Another shape is used to create the transport system to the surface. The direction of this shape and its rings is vertical instead of horizontal.

One ring to rule them all By using only one type of ring broad varitaion of shapes and openings can be created

Inspiration

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

System I have now a tool that provides me with a large variety of shapes, one type of ring, a rule that says that openings can be created between any of these rings as long as the ring itself is not cut.

System

Directions & Gaps I have chosen to work with a type of circle that I have modified by a specific pattern. All the rings I use will have the same shape. If the rings are simply put on a line, the shape that is created becomes an ordinary tube.

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

Directions & Gaps This is not very interesting but if they are slightly shifted or turned, a different type off structure is created. In these structures the relationship between the rings creates openings and directions.

Size & Order Though the rings may not differ in shape it may vary in size. By changing the size of some rings and shifting their position another type of direction and form is created. The position of the rings does not have to be chronological to their size meaning a great variety of shapes can be made.

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

Rotation & Rotation The rings can also be rotated in any way. They can for example be rotated around their own axis or around a united axis. An interesting shape is created by rotating the rings around both their own and a united axis.

Iteration| Apply By combining the different systems the stations can be shaped in many different ways,

Direction

Kombination Combining all of these techniques makes way for remarkable shapes. Here i have chosen to work whit the existing design of the station.

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

The Station will have three exits. These are directed towards the different ikon buildings that are so important to the site. The end of the escalator is pointed towards Gothia Towers and Svesnak mässan. The oter two exits are directed towards Universeum, Världskulturmuseet and Göteplatsen, avenyn. Liseberg will be easaly reached by the other exit from underground.

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

The iconic buildings are important to the size. It allows the visitors to quickly localize themselves. Therefore I would like for the visitors to be able to see the buildings before they have reached the surface.

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

Free movement My second approach for the project was to create the station from scratch regardless of the existing design.

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

Direction I looked back at my previous work and decided to revisit the concept below. I wanted the station to be created by two shapes. One shape that transported the trains and one that transported the visiting people.

Final Iteration

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

After a lot of modeling and changing angles i found the sektion i wanted. It shows the entire loftet system. The sektion shows how the vertical shape emerges from under ground and how it meets the surface. The vertical shape reaches from the platform to the surface, creating the transportsystem for the passangers.

Lofted System The final iteration is build up by using the system that i developed for the loft tool. Following shapes were used.

Material I found inspiration in a hotel. And I started to experiment in working with copper. This material reflects well and can therefore be lit in a beautiful way at night.

Strategy The studio was divided into groups and each group made a strategy for the project.

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

i looked back at my work and decided that i wanted to continue working with this type of sektion. The sektion will be abstract. In this way it will show the whole koncept of the projekt.

Orientation Became the goal for our strategy. To reach this goal we presented keys that could all be applied to our induvidual projects..

Strategy These are the keys that i decided to work further with.

Visual contact

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

Verticality

Keys: • Light

enhance the scape. Show direction in day and night

• Room & Typology

intensify the feeling of connection

• Material

Use the same material for the same pur pose in the different stations.

• Verticality

Enhance the stations and the entrances.

• Visual contact To be able to localize yourself even when under ground.

Development

When i worked with the strategy the keys evolved.

Strategy The goal is to create entirety. Västlänken and its stations are connected by the tracks but it will also be connected in its design and by the experience of the different rooms. This creates a logic that will help the passengers to localize themselves when traveling.

verticality The vertical shape marks the entrances both at the platform and at the surface. It may vary in shape from station to station but its purpose will remain the same.

the surface and creates the roof s will be different in shape but will tell the passenger that the .

Location Before the passengers reaches the surface a view is given of the surrounding building. This allows the passengers to quickly localize themselves.

Spacial Drawing The final drawing will show the platform and the room that is created under the surface.

ARKX01 | Kandidatprojektet | Iterativ Design | V채stl채nken | Studio UFO Ellen Linder

Platform When the train approaches the station the vertical shape becomes visible. Sunlight squeezes in from above and cast a light on the vertical shape, clarifying for the passenger the way up to the surface. The platforms sides disappear and make way for the horizontal shape to continue down below. Light reaches up from below the platform and lighten the walls of the shape.
