The Brief and Research Tony Broomhead, an architect from Sheffield, set a brief to design unique and innovative Christmas trees for Holbeck Urban Village. The concept was to design a tree that acts as a networking platform, visitors of Marshall

Mill can attach their business cards to the tree which act as both decoration and publicity.

The Tree Final tree was made out of 6mm MDF by the Woodwork department at Leeds College of Art. The tree was designed to come as a flat pack set which can be assembled on site, this was achieved by adding slots to allow the tree to

come together without the use of glue or nails.

Overall the tree was a success though the group motivation could have been improved. As this brief was an opportunity to work on something completely different to typical ‘graphic design’ it was a chance to apply UX practice to non-

web based outcomes. Working closely with an architect was also an eye-opening experience as many of the same design techniques are used in both professions.
