OUGD603 Extended Practice

The Brief and Research Whilst producing the Leeds College of Art Christmas cards an opportunity arose to deliever a taster day to foundation students and extended diploma students at the Vernon Street campus. As this brief was last minute and before Christmas time it was decided that the artwork used for the cards would be used to create a typography advent calendar. This brief

mimicked a project given within the first few weeks on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course. Using the same primary research from the cards brief it was decided that creating another interactive brief would be the best way to engage with the students and also give them an insight into the kind of work produced on the course.

Brief 5

Development Typography is a key aspect of graphic design and especially to the level 4 of the degree programme. One of the first briefs given to student is to create an alphabet based on themselves using 10mmx10mm squares as a template. Using these guidelines it was decided that each student would be given a folded card with a Christmas themed illustration on

the cover and an outline of a serif or sans serif letterform printed onto it. As this brief was given in limited time it was necessary to give the students a letterform instead of asking them to design their own. The students were asked to illustrate something Christmas themed with their letterform, the brief was open to interpretation and allowed each

student to explore their creativity within a light hearted topic.

The scale of this brief was considered as over 25 students were expected to join in the session. It was therefore decided that glyphs and numbers would need to be included in order to avoid repeated letters.

Turn out on the day was rather disappointing as only six students arrived for the session. Though this started out negatively each student that did take part were given an allotted time with a student or member of the programme team to ask any questions about the course or about graphic design as a whole. This was a very positive outcome as

questions that would not have been asked in front of a large group of people were asked. Overall, the day went very well and hopefully some of the students will be applying for the course in the future.

The Outcome Though the result of the day was not as expected the outcome was very successful and represented the degree programme effectively.

Portfolio Review By showing portfolio of work FE students were able to see the range of work produced by degree students and could also get a feel for the amount of work needed for each module and the standard expected. Overall this was the most successful part of the day as it encompassed everything the session was meant for.
