Pay It Forward group brings Christmas joy to 160-plus families BY DEB EVERTS

SALAMANCA

—‘Tis the season to

pay it forward. The local Pay It Forward group continued to help friends and neighbors who were down on their luck this holiday season. On Sunday, Dec. 22, the group made Christmas brighter for 163 local families in need, totaling 561 adults and children. This year’s program again occupied the former Terra Publishing building on North

State Street where volunteers distributed food boxes and gifts to people waiting in line in their vehicles. Organizer Tim Jackson said local firefighters from the Seneca Nation’s Allegany Territory and city of Salamanca fire departments delivered Christmas packages to nine designated families who were not able to pick them up at the distribution center. “The place works out well because the volunteers have plenty of space to collect, store and wrap the food and

gifts. It’s also an ideal spot for people to pick up their packages,” said Jackson, who owns the building. “Like last year, everyone drove around the back of the building from where the boxes were loaded. This was all at no cost to the recipients.” Jackson said more than 30 businesses all around the area participated in the group’s Tree of Hope program. Community residents chose a tag — or two — from the tree listing the first names of the children, their age, size and Christmas toy wish. They took the tags and bought gifts, then brought them back to the same business, unwrapped, by Dec. 13. “The gifts started coming in about the last week of November. When December hit, the presents really started rolling in,” he said. Jackson said the 2022 and 2023 programs totaled over $50,000, and this year’s program totaled more. He said each family received on average over

$500 worth of toys, clothing, bedding, household items and a week’s worth of food, including a ham. “We did not do the ham giveaway this year because we wanted to concentrate on taking care of our families,” he noted. LEADING UP TO the event, the group held three food drives — two at Save-A-Lot and one at Sander’s Parkview. Jackson said they also got food donations from Saving Grace Outreach in Cattaraugus. Prior to the event, a dozen or more dedicated volunteers worked for months packaging and boxing food, along with collecting all the presents from the Trees of Hope located at the participating businesses. According to Jackson, the volunteers spent endless hours wrapping approximately 5,000 gifts that were distributed to families in need. The Pay It Forward group welcomes any volunteers

The Pay It Forward motto says it all, “We can help. We are you.” Jackson said the campaign has grown bigger each year and it’s all because of the generosity of the people of Salamanca and the surrounding area. Jackson said they could use much more help next year because the program keeps growing. Jackson and his volunteers have spurred area residents into helping others who are less fortunate in their communities. This is not an organization, but rather a small group of local people and businesses that have taken it upon themselves to give clothing, food and toys to fill needs, especially during the holiday season.

Fun Facts About

January

January marks the start of a new year, and that sense of a new beginning is palpable for millions of people across the globe. New Year’s resolutions are typically made at the start of January, and those can serve as a springboard to an enjoyable year. As the calendar turns to January, there’s much to learn about this meaningful month. 1. The Roman god Janus is the namesake for the first month of the year. Janus was considered the protector of gates and doorways and the god of beginnings and transitions, among other things. Given those qualities, it’s no wonder Janus is the namesake for the first month of the year. 2. Though it’s not considered part of the holiday season, January boasts its fair share of holidays, and some Christians even consider it the end of the holiday season. Celebrated by some on January 6, the Epiphany is a Christian feast day that commemorates the visit of the Magi, the baptism of Jesus Christ and the wedding at Cana. Though some Christian celebrants may take down their holiday decorations, including their Christmas trees, before the dawn of the new year, those who commemorate the Epiphany may wait until January 6 to pack things up. In addition to the Epiphany, the January calendar also features holidays such as New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. 3. Though they might not be officially recognized holidays, two very influential figures in American history were born in January. Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, who helped to draft the Declaration of Independence, was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston in what was then known as the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Nearly 230 years later, Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi. Though he was not official royalty, Elvis is still considered the “King of Rock and Roll,” and one can only wonder what Benjamin Franklin might have thought about that designation had he been around to hear it. 4. The Farmer’s Almanac reports that there is some folklore associated with January weather. Though some might welcome a warmer January than they’re accustomed to, the prevailing folklore around January weather suggests a summer-like January will result in a winter-like spring. In addition, fog in January is associated with a wet spring. So anyone hoping for a warm and dry spring might want to hope for and subsequently grin and bear any cold weather that comes their way in January. AUTO CORNER Tips to conserve fuel on road trips

Road trips remind drivers of just how thrilling the open road can be. For millions of individuals, nothing provides a sense of escapism as effectively as the open road. Though road trips can be liberating, they do not allow a complete escape from reality, something drivers realize when the time comes to fill up the gas tank. Gas prices fell considerably by mid-December 2023, dipping to an average of $3.12 per gallon of regular by the middle of that month according to data from AAA. That marked a significant decline from just a month earlier, when prices for a gallon of regular gas averaged $3.36. But drivers know prices can spike just as quickly as they drop, so it pays dividends to recognize strategies to conserve fuel. Such strategies can be especially beneficial for drivers about to embark on a road trip. • Slow down. Pushing the pedal to the medal might be a romantic, if unsafe, notion of how to drive on a road trip. But that approach can be costly at the pump.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, every five miles per hour motorists drive over 50 miles per hour is the equivalent of paying $0.30 more per gallon of gas. That estimate is based on a gallon of gas costing $4.32, but drivers can still conserve a considerable amount of fuel by slowing down. • Steer clear of city driving. The stop-and-go traffic that is a hallmark of city driving can compromise fuel efficiency. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that rapid acceleration and braking, which is hard to avoid when driving through cities with lots of stoplights and pedestrians, can lower gas mileage by as much as 40 percent. • Avoid rooftop cargo. Rooftop cargo boxes might be a necessity when a car is packed with passengers. But these luxuries come at a steep cost. A study from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that rooftop cargo boxes can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 17 percent on the highway and as much as 25 percent

on interstates where drivers drive at speeds between 65 and 75 miles per hour. The DOE reports that rearmount cargo boxes are much more efficient, so drivers looking to conserve fuel may want to pack light and/ or opt for rear-mount cargo boxes instead of rooftop boxes. • Utilize cruise control. The auto manufacturer Kia estimates that utilizing the cruise control function on a vehicle can save drivers as much as 14 percent on fuel. Cruise control is not advisable when driving in cities or on roads with stoplights. However, when driving on interstates, driving at the same continuous speed helps drivers avoid constant accelerations and decelerations, which compromise fuel efficiency. When the open road beckons, drivers can make their road trips more affordable by implementing various strategies to conserve fuel.

increasing affordability for families and putting every tool at our disposal to work to address our housing crisis.” The grants — administered by New York State Homes and Community Renewal’s Office of Community Renewal — were awarded to nonprofit organizations and localities to help preserve affordable housing, support veterans and older New Yorkers, increase access to homeownership, and strengthen local economies. NYS Community Development Block Grant Program provides federal funds to help localities with projects that improve communities and benefit their residents. Housing grants can be used to rehabilitate owner-occupied or renter-occupied homes, down payment assistance for low- and

moderate-income first-time homebuyers and private water/ wastewater system assistance for lowand moderate-income homeowners. “Increasing access to housing and making homeownership an affordable reality is critical for all New Yorkers,” said HCR Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas. “The $51 million we announced today through a variety of programs will provide resources people need to make necessary home repairs and accessibility modifications, provide help with down payments, replace manufactured homes, and allow more than 1,000 households to live safely and securely in their communities. Thank you to our partners on the ground who are putting this investment to work on behalf of New Yorkers.”

What to know about kitchen cabinet projects

Kitchens have long been characterized as the busiest room in a home. Kitchens are where meals are prepared and cooked, but they also tend to be gathering spaces where families connect at the end of a day and where guests congregate during holiday celebrations and birthday parties. All that time in the kitchen makes these popular rooms to renovate. Homeowners who want to give their kitchens a new look and feel without doing a full renovation can consider kitchen cabinet projects. An understanding of kitchen cabinet projects can help homeowners decide if this undertaking is for them. • Cabinet renovations do not necessarily require replacement. Some

cabinets may not need to be removed and replaced. The renovation experts at HGTV note that kitchen cabinet refacing can be a budget-friendly way to give a new look to cabinets that do not require replacement. Refacing can be as extensive as homeowners prefer, but such projects can create a whole new aesthetic in the kitchen depending on the extent of the project. • There are many different types of kitchen cabinets. Homeowners who have never been involved in a cabinet project should know they will have many different options to choose from. Face-frame cabinets are a traditional choice made with a frame around the door and any drawers that might be included as

part of the cabinets. Some additional options include full overlay cabinets, frameless cabinets, recessed panel cabinets, and Shaker cabinets. Homeowners hesitant to choose their own cabinets can work with a contractor and/or interior designer to find the option that aligns best with their current kitchen. • Cabinet materials and finishes vary as well. Cabinets can be made from an array of materials, including wood, laminate, metal, and plastic. Cabinets also can be finished with paint, stain, glaze, and lacquer. Each finish has its own unique characteristics. For example, painted cabinets may need to be tended to with greater frequency than other options because paint can

fade. However, painted cabinets remain popular because homeowners can paint them any color at any time. • Consider the countertops when adjusting kitchen cabinets. Kitchens tend to have color schemes, and that scheme is often reflected in the color of cabinets and countertops. When tweaking just the cabinets, homeowners should give ample consideration to the overall color scheme of their kitchens. Interior designers can be invaluable resources for homeowners who aren’t quite sure how new or refaced cabinets will fit into an overall color scheme. • Consider replacement if necessary. A kitchen cabinet replacement project will be more

expensive than refacing the cabinets. But there are instances when cabinets require replacement. Excessive wear and tear, insufficient storage, a dated appearance, and cabinets that appear to be sagging

off the wall are some indicators that replacement is necessary. Updated cabinets can give a kitchen a whole new look, even if the cabinets are refaced instead of replaced.
