2013 Ellicottville Directory
Come and play with us …
Nestled in the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York, Ellicottville will captivate with you with its fabulous skiing, epic mountain bike trails, charming shops, challenging golf, energetic nightlife, vibrant arts and culture scene, casual and fine dining, and cozy hotels and B&Bs. It’s a fourseason destination offering action-filled family fun all year long.
Live the Magic of the Holidays
Discover Four Seasons of Adventure and Fun
Christmas in Ellicottville kicks off the 2012 holiday season Nov. 23–25 with a day of festivities. Enjoy Christmas carolers, live reindeer, festively decorated storefronts, horse wagon rides, cookie decorating hot chocolate and a visit from
Santa. The annual Irish Christmas event on Nov. 30 features a night of lighthearted Irish stories, auctions and merry music to support needy families around the holidays. As darkness descends, stay for the annual lighting of the threestory tree in the heart of the village. The
old-fashioned holiday celebrations continue Dec. 1 with the Christmas Stroll, when the sidewalks brim with merry shoppers and strolling carolers. Look for the arrival of Santa and his elves, walk your dog in the Reindog Parade, and watch the Living Nativity at the village gazebo complete with live animals.
Serene or Extreme … You Decide
Through March, Ellicottville is a virtual winter wonderland with over 50 years of bragging rights to two top-ranked ski and snowboarding resorts. As the home of Holiday Valley Resort, ranked #6 as the best winter resort in the East by readers of SKI magazine, you can enjoy fabulous day and night skiing on groomed slopes, a NASTAR course, high-speed lifts, four amazing terrain parks and a new Troll House park near Creekside Lodge. There’s also an easy way down from most lifts so families can enjoy their time together. Another must-see is the annual Dec. 31 Torchlight Parade that rings in the New Year. Holiday Valley’s Lounsbury Adaptive Program and their children’s and adult ski/ride lessons will prove that skiing and boarding are a blast. Voted #1 for hospitality and lifts in the East, it’s no surprise they welcome visitors from all over the Northeast and Canada every year. For an alternative winter excitement, take the family for a snowy thrill ride down the 2,940 feet of zigzagging track with waves, curves and a corkscrew spiral of Holiday Valley’s Mountain Coaster. It’s is open year round, with limited winter hours. If the kids are still screaming for more excitement, hop on the free shuttle to the Holiday Valley Tubing Company for 12 lanes of slippery family fun. Minimum age is 7 and 42 inches in height. For the younger set, there’s even a Little Tubers area. Take off the chill in front of the giant fire pit

or rest inside the warming hut complete with snack bar, fireplace, game room and restrooms. HoliMont, known for its patented snowmaking system, is the country’s largest private ski area with 135 skiable acres, and this year they’re celebrating their 50th anniversary with the inauguration of a new high-speed detachable quad lift. The public is welcome to ski Monday through Friday. It’s well worth the trip.
Winter Trails Await
Stay local and explore Holiday Valley’s ridgeline cross-country trails or glide across the golf course at the bottom of the mountain. For the adventurous and experienced, make your own trails on state forestlands adjacent to the resort. Make Ellicottville your home base, and take a short drive to nearby Allegany State Park where you can cross-country at the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area. For a slower pace, enjoy the trails on snowshoes. Either way, 35 miles of forested trails will leave you breathless. For motorized fun, bring your snowmobile and explore over 70 miles of trails within the park in addition to 400-plus miles of intersecting, well-maintained sled trails on state land. For a free snowmobile trail map, call 1-800-331-0543.
Poles, Blades and Sleds
Fishing isn’t just a warm-weather sport here. Enjoy ice fishing on area lakes and net the freshest Bluegill and Brown Trout. Bring your ice skates for a twirl on frozen lakes and ponds. You can even go for a romantic sleigh ride across snow-laden fields.
Slopeside Fundraisers
On Feb. 16, Holiday Valley hosts the fifth annual Boarding for Breast Cancer board-a-thon to raise breast cancer awareness including contests, demos, prizes and a reception. Belly sledding, an auction and wonderful camaraderie highlight Holiday Valley’s annual Penguin Paddle on Feb. 23, an annual fundraiser for the Lounsbury Adaptive Program. Spring peaks around the corner when HoliMont holds its annual United Way Day on March 7. Winter Carnival/Mardi Gras held on March 9–10 on the slopes of Holiday Valley and throughout the village

is a family-friendly celebration of winter complete with a scavenger hunt, face painting, a costume parade, and the Dummy Downhill. On March 23, the Valley’s Pond Skimming event usually caps off the ski season.
Indoor Entertainment
Get to know our neighbors to the north during Canadian Friendship Week from Jan. 2–8. Groove to smooth sounds at the Winter Blues Festival Jan. 4–5 with great live acts throughout the village. Save an afternoon or evening for some pizza and bowling at Ellicottville’s newest eight-lane alley.
Spring Gives the Green Light
As the snow begins to melt, local maple producers spring to action tapping trees and mounting buckets to catch the flowing sap that will be boiled down to a regional specialty – maple syrup. On March 16-17 and March 24-25, WNY maple producers welcome you to visit their sugar shacks on Maple Weekend to see how syrup is made and to enjoy its golden sweetness at all-you-can-eat pancake breakfasts around the area. More maple treats and festivities await at the Franklinville Maple Festival April 27-28.
Anything That Floats
Canoes, kayaks and makeshift boats are all eligible for a trip down Great Valley Creek for the Great Valley Firemen’s Regatta on May 3. After a day on the water, enjoy dinner and music with good friends.
High Adventure in the Trees
Located near Tannenbaum Lodge at Holiday Valley, the Sky High Adventure Park opens early spring and offers a challenging nine-course Aerial Park on 5 wooded acres. Test your balance and strategic skills as you navigate ladders, logs, platforms, zip lines and other obstacles to conquer easy to commando-level courses set at varying heights. Enjoy gorgeous views on the green level zip-lineonly course that sends you speeding to the base via 6 lines. For high-speed action, hop the Mountain Coaster to barrel down 2,940 feet of elevated track including waves, curves, a jump and huge spiral. Adrenaline junkies be warned – once won’t be enough.

Take the Ultimate Artistic Road Trip
Art lovers and road trippers will love Routes to Art weekend May 18-19, produced by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. Fill your wallet, empty the trunk, and top off the gas tank before heading out to meet some of the best artists in Cattaraugus County and from the Seneca Nation of Indians. Visit their studios or stop in at gathering hubs to get an in-depth look at the creative process in action. Over 40 artists participate, with more than a dozen located right in Ellicottville. Then mark your calendar for the Dec. 7 Routes to Art Holiday Sale.
“Epic” Sustainable Singletrack
The Western New York Mountain Biking Association has been building sustainable singletrack trails in the challenging terrain around Ellicottville for over 20 years, making it one of the best cycling destinations in the East. An extensive trail network of over 40 gnarly miles with plenty of interesting twists and turns await the experienced rider. Gather some friends for a competitive ride or go it alone and collect your thoughts in the peacefulness of the forest. You can find trail maps and conditions at www.wnymba.org. Mid-June brings Holiday Valley’s Wednesday Night Mountain Bike Series – 6 Wednesday nights of rugged, technical competition on a 4–5 mile loop up and down the slopes including cash prizes. For added enjoyment, venture across logging roads behind the Valley to access 35+ miles of WNYMBA-built trails on state land. Mountain bike rentals are available in the village and at Holiday Valley.
Nothing Like a Good Mudslide
Make plans for the June 15 annual Mudslide Trail Run also at Holiday Valley. The 3.5 or 5.4mile obstacle trail run begins at the top of the mountain at Spruce Lake and heads downhill with a slippery mudslide finish down Yodeler. There’s even a Kids’ MiniMudslide course at the Training Center. Costumes are highly encouraged with prizes for most creative.

On the Links and in the Pools
The Holiday Valley’s recently redesigned 18-hole, par 70 Double Black Diamond golf course is as beautiful as it is challenging. A blend of flat and mountain terrain, the course was nominated as one of the best redesigns in 2009 by Golf Magazine. The Valley’s 15-acre golf practice facility includes a 300-yard driving range, 10 covered tees and 50 grass tees, plus target greens and a ball machine. Need to improve your swing? Take a lesson from a pro at the renowned Phil Ritson/Mel Sole Golf School at Holiday Valley or get your practice by joining a league. After a hot day on the golf course, order a poolside drink and cool off in one of Holiday Valley’s three refreshing pools including a lap pool, toddler pool with 2 mini waterfalls and an activity pool with slide and diving board.
Summertime Hums with Concerts and Fireworks
The annual Summer Music Festival July 5–7 features big name bands performing at Holiday Valley’s slopeside stage. Bring your family, chairs and your favorite picnic spread enjoy the shows and a spectacular fireworks display. Children under 12 get in free. Other live performances take place in village establishments, along with the annual Pet Parade and Strawberry Festival. The Jazz and Blues Weekend July 26-28 is a mellow weekend for indoor and outdoor performances throughout the village all within easy walking distance. Sip a drink on an outdoor patio and enjoy the music – and keep an eye out for “Elvis.”
Wild West Weekend
That same July weekend brings the annual Ellicottville Championship Rodeo to town. It’s an all-around family favorite event with several hundred “cowboys” who perform in standard rodeo events, bull riding, clowns and a kids’ stick horse parade.

with an Old Order Amish community that still prefers to live without electricity, telephones and other modern conveniences. Known for their quality craftsmanship, the Amish produce gorgeous quilts, tasty jams and jellies, children’s toys, fine furniture and more. Look for “open” signs at farmsteads and painted boards describing their specialty items. Watch out for their signature black horse-drawn buggies as you travel the countryside. Amish country also offers several events including garden tours, open houses, barn “quilts,” and the Amish GeoTrail with 10 cleverly concealed caches.
Mingle with Horses and Alpacas
Your visit isn’t complete until you’ve visited a local farmer’s market for a taste of a juicy, justpicked tomato. If you enjoy meeting new four-legged friends, make a stop at a horseback riding ranch and explore the area’s winding trails, or stick around for a real old-fashioned chuck wagon dinner. Kids will love petting gentle alpacas and parents will be equally delighted with the oh-so-soft alpaca products sold in shops and farm stores. For a free and eco-friendly experience, take a short village walk and tour Nannen Arboretum’s the varied plant life and Japanese meditation garden.
Cool Side Trips
Outdoor lovers will enjoy kayaking, fishing and relaxing on the beach at Allegany State Park for a lazy afternoon. Choose a balmy summer’s eve and treat your family to an old-fashioned movie at one of two area driveins in Portville and Machias.
History and Tradition Collide
Learn about Native American culture at the Seneca Pow Wow, which takes place every July, for a unique cultural experience including traditional dancing, singing and drum competitions. An annual tradition, the Cattaraugus County Fair comes to town July 29 – Aug. 4, complete with funnel cakes, live music, rides, demolition derby and more. A visit to Little Rock City takes you back several hundred millions years when these impressive rock formations were carved by an ancient sea. It’s a great place for hunting, hiking, mountain bike riding and more.
