Family reunion: ‘The Umbrella Academy’ siblings face the final timeline

By Sarah Passingham

Stripped of their powers and facing new foes that want them dead, the Hargreeves siblings are back in the fourth and final season of “The Umbrella Academy,” premiering Thursday, Aug. 8, on Netflix. Stuck — for now, at least — as mere mortals with no powers and feeling enemies encroaching upon them, there’s no telling just what is about to happen to the Hargreeves in this final 10-episode season.

On top of past time jumps and their resulting paradoxes affecting the timeline the siblings now find themselves in, a new group, calling themselves The Keepers, don’t believe their own reality and see a day of reckoning on the horizon.

The formerly estranged superhero siblings, brought together by the apparent death of their father, are now just strange, as they have spent the past three seasons joined at the hip, taking on a world out to get them. Spontaneously born on the same day to different mothers all over the

world and adopted and raised by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore, “For All Mankind”) at the Umbrella Academy, each of the seven siblings possesses a unique power. Elliot Page (“Tales of the City”) is Viktor, who can control soundwaves; Tom Hopper (“Black Sails”) is Luther, an astronaut with super strength; David Castaneda (“Most Dangerous Game”) is the telekinetic Diego; Emmy Raver-Lampman (“The Beekeeper,” 2024) is Allison, who controls reality with her well-placed rumors; Robert Sheehan (“Misfits”) is Klaus, who is able to speak to the dead; Aidan Gallagher (“Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn”) is the time-jumping Five; and Justin H. Min (“Beef”) is Ben, whose trusty tentacles are always at the ready. Joining this season is David Cross (“You Hurt My Feelings,” 2023) as Sy Grossman, a family man on a desperate hunt for his daughter. Returning this season is Ritu Arya (“Feel Good”) as Lila Pitts, another superhuman with the

ability to mirror anyone else’s power. Lila wasn’t raised with the Hargreeves as a member of the academy, but she’s joined the crew of reunited siblings in adulthood.

Ben is back from the dead this season, having died during one of the siblings’ missions years ago. At first appearing only to Klaus as a ghost, the rest of the Hargreeves encountered him again in an alternate timeline where he was a member of a different superhero family at the Sparrow Academy. In the final season, all of the siblings are reunited on the same timeline, though Ben still has no memory of the Umbrella Academy, and it’s revealed in an official trailer that the siblings cannot recall any concrete memories about Ben’s death. They all have a lot to catch up on while some new enemies are hot on their tails. New cast members include a real-life married couple, portraying what else but an on-screen married couple. Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) and Megan Mul-

lally (“Party Down”) are Drs. Gene and Jean Thibedeau, two seemingly normal Midwestern community college professors teaching a radical curriculum. Somehow, the Thibedeaus have pieced together the puzzle constructed by the Hargreeves’ time-jumping chaos and are keen to share their theories with others who are open to believing their reality is a lie. “That tentacle boy is the key to understanding all the timelines,” Gene lectures in the trailer for the upcoming season, training all eyes on Ben. Netflix has teased fans with Easter egg-filled posters, a full set of episode titles, thrilling trailers and even a peek at a page of the season premiere’s script. But so far, cast and crew have remained tight-lipped about what’s to come during the show’s final season. In an interview with RadioTimes in March, Page shared all he could about the upcoming season, saying, “I’m not allowed to say anything, but it’s gonna be, as per usual, very fun, classic Hargreeves chaos and hijinks.”

In Focus

“Industry” - Season

“Broadcast News” puts a lens on the business of TV

It may not have the edge of other movies about, but “Broadcast News” may not be the edgiest movie ever made about the television business, but it’s hugely likable and entertaining. Being shown by Starz Encore on Sunday, Aug. 4, writer-director James L. Brooks’ 1987 comedy-drama comes from a world he already knew, having co-created the TV newsroom of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” However, he fortified his effort here by having as an adviser Susan Zirinsky, a veteran CBS News producer who later became the chief of that entire division. She’s also the inspiration for one of the story’s chief characters Jane Craig, a driven producer in a network bureau in Washington, D.C. The role made Holly Hunter a star, and perfectly cast opposite her is William Hurt as charismatic Tom Grunick, a newly hired reporter whose admission of not fully understanding the job repulses Jane, though she also can’t deny her attraction to him. Albert Brooks completes the tale’s romantic triangle as Aaron Altman, a correspondent who’s more than capable at his job, though he lacks Tom’s star quality. This film remains enjoyable to watch time and again.

“The Mary Tyler Moore Show” (Catchy Comedy, weekdays): Speaking of this classic sitcom (as we did above), it’s worth a reminder that it continues to be available regularly, with its seventh and final season currently being shown. During the final credits of the last episode, Moore credited her co-stars as being “the best cast ever,” and it’s hard to argue with that when the actors in question included Edward Asner, Ted Knight, Gavin MacLeod, Georgia Engel and – returning for appearances in that climactic half-hour – Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman.
