nation sends himself and his friends on an unbelievable adventure across the galaxy in the new series “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” premiering on the Disney+ streaming service Tuesday, Dec. 3. Ravi Cabot-Conyers (“Encanto,” 2021) stars in the family fantasy show as Wim, a young student on a peaceful planet whose head is firmly planted among the stars. His desire for adventure sends him and his friends KB (Kyriana Kratter, “Bunk’d”), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith, “Mythic Quest”) and Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong, “Anne With an E”) blasting through space. Deep in a forest, the four friends discover what appears to be an abandoned Jedi temple. Quick to explore it,

one wrong step sends them catapulting across the galaxy. Lost in space and trying to find their way home, the kid crew teams up with a possible Jedi, Jod Na Nawood (portrayed by Jude Law, “The New Pope”). Across the eight-episode series, per Disney, “finding their way home — and meeting unlikely allies and enemies — will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”
Also starring in the new series are Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin,” 2022) and Tunde Adebimpe (“Twisters,” 2024) as Fern’s mom, Fara, and Wim’s dad, Wendle, respectively. Nick Frost (“The Nevers”) lends his voice to droid SM 33, who series co-creator Jon Watts (“The Old Man”) described to People in July as
“a rusty old, cranky droid that sort of reluctantly helps the kids along the way. ... The other thing about him is that he’s the first mate of a mysterious ship.”
Law also spoke to People about joining the famed franchise with “Skeleton Crew,” saying, “it is a fun place to be, the universe of Star Wars.” He added, “there are great references to old films and recent episodes and series. There’s a lot of originality and I hope that will bring the feeling of fun to those who watch it.”
The key words “fun” and “originality” can also be used to describe a big reveal about the upcoming series. Episode director David Lowery (“The Green Knight,” 2021) told Empire in October that the Teek, creatures only
previously seen in the mostly-forgotten Ewok movies from the mid-1980s, make a grand reappearance in the new series. “I was most excited about having hand puppets on set,” Lowery said about the practical magic behind the space critters.
“It’s the most ancient technology being used with the most cutting-edge technology, simultaneously. That combination was absolutely magical,” Lowery shared about mixing media to make both the puppetry and the special effects come to life. About seeing it all come together, he said, “in the final episode it’s just a hand puppet in the middle of this crazy Volume set. The cognitive dissonance of seeing those two things together, live in front of you, is absolutely incredible.”

Starring Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, this delicious horror-comedy follows as food-loving Tyler Ledford (Hoult) brings his date, Margot Mills (Taylor-Joy), to an exclusive restaurant on a private island — a restaurant owned by celebrity chef Julian Slowik (Fiennes) — in search of a life-changing meal.

Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn share a ‘Roman Holiday’
The movie that made Audrey Hepburn a star — and an Oscar-winning one at that — “Roman Holiday” is part of a “Falling in Love With the Movies” theme night, tied to a new book of the same name by Esther Zuckerman, Wednesday, Dec. 4, on Turner Classic Movies. Filmed on location, the William Wyler-directed 1953 comedy casts the actress as a princess who chafes under a packed schedule and constant monitoring, prompting her to go AWOL and see Rome on her own. There, she crosses paths with a reporter (Gregory Peck) who doesn’t recognize her at first. Once he realizes who she is, he also tries to conceal his true identity, hoping to land an exclusive story and photos, helped by a cameraman friend (Eddie Albert). The Colosseum and Trevi Fountain are among the famous sites seen in the course of the travelogue-within-the-film, which also earned Academy Awards for its story and costume design. Though many fans can’t imagine this picture without the particular magic Peck and Hepburn brought to it, Cary Grant and Elizabeth Taylor were among those considered for it earlier.
