Epic Recognized Preserving Ellicottville’s Ellicottville 20 Most Scenic Mt. Bike Trails in Eastern U.S. Four Corners by Eva Potter

Ellicottville has many reasons to make national waves, and we do it often when it comes to mountain biking. While we didn’t win the Bell Helmet Grant to build a new flow trail at Holiday Valley, Ellicottville has again been named to a mountain biking trail poll — this time by Singletracks. com, a website dedicated to providing “mountain bikers with information they need and want to know.” Ellicottville Epic trails, certified by the

Community Moving to Establish Special Historic District By Jann Wiswall

There is a movement afoot in the Village of Ellicottville to establish the “four corners” as a special historic district. The effort’s intent is to

preserve in perpetuity the integrity of the four buildings and grounds that have anchored the village since the 1800s at the corners of Jefferson and Washington Streets. With the support of the Village Board, the Village Planning Board is taking the lead on the effort, which requires zoning changes and a public hearing. In addition to preserving the exteriors of the four buildings (the 1887 Building, Saint John’s Episcopal Church, the Village/Town Hall and the Town Museum), the planning board also will be considering allowable uses for the buildings and grounds. “This is about history,” said John Northrup, who is one of several long-time Village residents who backs the project. “Most people who know Ellicottville have See Four Corners page 11

The Ellicottville Rodeo is Back!

Looking for some good, old-fashioned family fun this Fourth of July weekend? The Ellicottville Championship Rodeo is back, and

it’s bigger and better than ever! Located at 6319 Sommerville Valley Road just outside Ellicottville, the rodeo is in its 26th year of bringing the Wild West to the Enchanted Mountains. “There will be about 450 to 500 cowboys and cowgirls coming in this year. They come from all over the USA and Canada,” said Karen Kent, who owns and runs the rodeo with her husband, John. The weekend event will bring in these athletes for 10 standard rodeo events, including Bareback Bronc Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Junior Bull Riding, Team Penning, Cowgirls Barrel Racing, Calf Roping, Cowgirls Breakaway Roping and Bull Riding. “There is a new event this year. It is called Cowgirls Breakaway,” explained Kent. “It’s similar to calf roping done by the cowboys, but See Ellicottville Rodeo page 9

Mansfield Reviews $4 Million Insurance Policy No Funding to Maintain Potter Hill Road By Jann Wiswall

Evans Agency insurance agent Jeff Miller reviewed the proposed insurance policy for the coming year for the Town of Mansfield board at its Monday, June 16, meeting. The policy provides extensive coverage for the town, which has had firsthand experience with major insurance claims after

the October 2012 fire that destroyed the town’s highway barn and all of its contents. Now that the new highway barn is completed, the 2014-15 policy covers it and all other municipal buildings for full replacement cost. It also covers vehicle replacement cost and all other standard coverage for a municipality of Mansfield’s size. The $4 million policy will

cost the town approximately $22,700 per year, an increase of about $400 over last year. The board agreed the proposed new policy provides adequate coverage. Miller offered the board the option to add terrorism, flood and earthquake insurance at additional cost. The board did not feel that such coverage was See Mansfield Board page 8

J.D. Northrup Wins East Tank Project Will Improve Water Pressure, Hydrant Function By Jann Wiswall

The Town of Ellicottville Board met Tuesday, June 17, for a special meeting to review the bids submitted for the East Tank construction project. Local construction firm J.D. Northrup Construction was

the low bidder. The board moved to award the bid to the company and to allow Town Supervisor John Burrell to sign contracts on the board’s behalf. Town Engineer Mark Alianello had carefully analyzed each of the four

bids received to be certain each bidder had included all requested tasks and project items. Two additional project items — replacement of two water meters — were bid separately as alternates. See East Tank Project page 9
