Sept 10. Ellicottville Historical Society Meeting

By Alicia Dziak

Labor Day weekend has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean the end of summer, and it definitely doesn’t mean the end of outdoor fun in Western New York! Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of all the region has to offer — whether it’s hiking, biking or just enjoying the sights of the Enchanted Mountains, you’ll find an array of opportunities to discover the great outdoors. Is the laid-back nature of hiking your thing? If so, you’re in luck! With miles of trails spanning a variety of terrain, the region has something for everyone. Head to Allegany State Park (ASP) for your choice of 18 hiking trails through New York’s largest state park. Rolling hills, forests, history, giant rock formations — you’ll find it all at ASP! Trail maps, found at both the Red House and Quaker rental offices, mark trail distances and level of difficulty, and don’t be shy about asking questions to find your ideal hike. Right along Route 219, heading south from Ellicottville, is McCarty Hill State Forest, which covers over 6,000 acres in the towns of Mansfield, Little Valley, Great Valley and Ellicottville. Part of the state forest borders both

Pumpkinville Opens Next Weekend New Pedal Car Track, Redesigned Corn Maize

By Alicia Dziak

September is here, which means endless fall fun in the Enchanted Mountains! To many, it’s just not fall until you visit Pumpkinville, a 200-acre farm in Great Valley that equates to hours and hours of family-friendly things to do! If you’re one of the thousands of people who have made Pumpkinville an annual

tradition, opening day is Saturday, Sept. 13, and you have from then until Halloween to enjoy the entertainment-laden property. As Pumpkinville’s regulars know, every year brings new things to see and do, and this year is no exception. The all-new pedal car track was built in front of the Corn Maize entrance. The attraction features tractor-themed vehicles that resemble dune buggies that offer fun for all ages. The Corn Maize, a popular attraction for years, is also new and improved. It was professionally designed by a Utah-based company and promises to be more challenging than in past years. The maze is sponsored by WYRK, whose logo is “carved” into the maze, and can be viewed from above, perhaps while enjoying See Pumpkinville Opens page 5

Days are getting shorter and some trees are showing glints of gold and coral. There is an unmistakable coolness in the air after sundown. Autumn is coming and right around the corner is … you guessed it … show time! And you don’t have to travel out of the area to satisfy your theatrical sweet

tooth. You will be pleasantly surprised at what is in our own backyard. Olean, the largest city in the county, has two community theatres. Olean Community Theatre, Inc., (www.OCTnow. com) uses the Cutco Theatre at the Olean Campus of Jamestown Community See It’s Show Time page 9

ECS Loses 124 Years of Dedicated Service

Reprinted from Ellicottville Central School September 2014 Newsletter

This past June, three longtime members of the ECS faculty/staff and a district bus driver closed out over one 124 years of service to the district. We have truly been blessed to have had employees like this who have dedicated so much of their professional career to our children and the Ellicottville community. To spend 42 years in one school district is quite a feat. Even more special, is the fact that

she spent another 13 years in Ellicottville as a student! Marion Polasik always challenged herself to constantly seek personal and professional improvement, which is the sign of a lifetime learner. When the new Common Core Curriculum was introduced, she embraced the changes and made sure she was prepared to assist her students and other members of the teaching staff. Ellicottville Catches Reed’s Eye Congressman Tom Reed (NY-23) made a stop in Ellicottville on Aug. 23 to take a look at local business and building projects, and to talk about the area’s development boom. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase Ellicottville and share what we truly are,” said Ellicottville Town Supervisor John Burrell. The group gathered at Holiday Valley for a meet-and-greet, then boarded a bus to tour the See Ellicottville Catches Reed’s Eye, page 3
