‘The Princess Bride’ continues to make magic

Director Rob Reiner’s enduringly popular 1987 fantasy “The Princess Bride” –which Freeform shows Friday, May 31 – is magical in its look as well as its story, having been filmed across England and also in Ireland. Adapted by screenwriter William Goldman from his own novel, the story-around-the-story finds a senior citizen ([played by Peter Falk) telling his grandson (Fred Savage) the saga of the lovely Buttercup (Robin Wright), who appears destined to become the wife of a prince (Chris Sarandon) though she truly loves a farm worker (Cary Elwes). Her kidnapping sends would-be rescuers in pursuit, sometimes in conflict with one anothet, and they encounter plenty of unusual characters along the way. Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, Peter Cook and Carol Kane also are among cast members of this much-beloved attraction, which has enchanted several generations and is certain to continue to captivate many more as time goes on.
