Introduction

Sheila Henry was created 44 years ago by Sheila Morton and was initially only hairdressing. Beauty was then brought in around 40 years ago with the introduction of Rene Guinot during those early years. There were only 4 beauty salons in the town at this time so we became very much the ‘place to be’ and the launch of the renowned Cathiodermie allowed us to stand out further. Angela joined the salon in 1987 whilst completing her beauty training and worked alongside only one other therapists. From here the beauty aspect of the business grew year on year, employing more staff, expanding within the building and becoming a very strong part of Sheila Henry.

The launch of our training academy, Intuitions, then allowed us to train our own staff which we felt very strongly about as there seemed to be a drop in the quality of qualified staff joining us. Intuitions was a huge success and eventually needed to move premises, where, under new ownership, it is still nurturing young people to become outstanding therapists. Sheila decided it would be a good idea to qualify as a therapist so she undertook a course at The Yorkshire College in 2001, this allowed her to have a greater understanding of the industry and allowed her to grow the business further. She worked in the salon alongside the rest of the therapist as well as running the business single handed, quite a challenge, but with great results over the years. She developed a large clientele of her own, some of whom have only recently moved to another therapist due to Sheila finishing work. Angela, meanwhile, was working hard and building a huge loyal clientele as well as completing a teaching qualification to allow her to work in Intuitions as well. She then had a few quieter years whist producing two lovely daughters and worked part-time, allowing her to keep her knowledge up-to-date. She then returned to full time work as soon as possible and took on a managerial role, looking after the team, completing reviews and appraisals as well as working as trainer and assessor for the trainee apprentices in salon. This role then grew and when the company became a limited company in 2012, Angela became a Director along with Sheila.

The team Angela - Director/Senior Therapist My favourite treatment has to be the Hydra cellular energie Age Logic or the Age Summum, can’t decide which? I use all Guinot skincare but my big favourite is the Age logic Yeux. I think everyone knows I’m fairly obsessed with fitness and particularly running but probably due to the fact I’m addicted to cake!

Sheila - previous Director/Senior Therapist The service I really enjoyed doing and receiving is Hydra cellular energie age logic, I could see the results pretty much straight away and certainly feel them when I personally have the treatment! Product-wise its got to be combination of age nutrition confort plus serum, great result on my skin. Having handed over the reins to Angela I propose to continue my wonderful relationship with Guinot by receiving wonderful treatments from Angela and the team - I can assure you I will be very demanding!

Hannah - Senior Therapist

My favourite treatment is the Hydra cellular energie and product is the Masque pur equilibre About me, I’m totally OCD and will re fold towels and re make beds in the salon so all labels are at the bottom! I also really want two sausage dogs called banger and mash but my Husband won’t let me!

Judy - Senior Therapist

My favourite product is hydra finish, my favourite treatment is hydradermie. I don’t think anyone at work knows this about me but I’m obsessed with interior design.

Ana - Young Therapist

I’ve been with the salon nearly a year on an apprenticeship and totally love it. Can’t wait to do my Guinot training. My favourite product is mask dynamisante and I love all the Guinot facials. I would describe myself as fun and outgoing.

Lyndsey - Reception

I love the cleansers and the gommage éclat parfait! I’m the newest member of this lovely bubbly team and although still learning the ropes I am thoroughly enjoying the warm fun environment of Sheila Henry and working with such a wonderful team and clients. While I haven’t yet sampled the wonderful treatments available I intent to take full advantage of them and the excellent therapists. Love to socialise and particular love a glass of fizz!

Clare - Reception

My favourite treatment is the Aromatic facial as I love massage and my favourite product is Bioxygene cream as it really brightens up my skin. I have recently bought a bike and I’m now a keen cyclist!

Emily - Reception My favourite treatment is the Guinot Hydradermie. It’s not only so deep cleansing that I love how my skin feels for days afterwards, but also love how relaxed it makes me! I can’t choose between the Lotion Hydra Fraicheur and the Masque Essential! Lotion Hydra Fraicheur is so gentle on my skin but also incredibly refreshing. I love using Masque Essential when I have had a stressful day, the lavender scent is so calming. It was my go-to product during my exams! I have just finished a Maths degree at the University of York.

Nicola - Receptionist

My favourite treatment would be the aromatic for ultimate relaxation, my favourite product is the newwhite brightening mask for a quick fix on a big night out, I’m a bit of a social butterfly and love nothing more than chatting away to our amazing clients or catching up with the girls for cocktails after work, #onebigfamily.

Emma - Reception

I love the good old hydradermie as it suits my skin perfectly and product wise I have sensitive skin so tend to stick to this range. I love holidays and going to see musicals especially the big West end shows, my favourite is Wicked.

3 Location

Harrogate is a spa town in North Yorkshire, England. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the town is a tourist destination and its visitor attractions include its spa waters and RHS Harlow Carr gardens. Nearby is the Yorkshire Dales national park and Nidderdale. Harrogate grew out of two smaller settlements, High Harrogate and Low Harrogate, in the 17th century. Since 2013, polls have consistently voted the town as “the happiest place to live” in Britain. The town became known as ‘The English Spa’ in the Georgian era, after its waters were discovered in the 16th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries its ‘chalybeate’ waters (containing iron) were a popular health treatment, and the influx of wealthy but sickly visitors contributed significantly to the wealth of the town.

We are situated in a quiet area of town, which is ideal for the nature of the business, yet only 5 mins walk from the town centre. We have plenty street parking and clients can be back in their car immediately after treatment. We moved to this location 9 years ago to allow for expansion. The building is a truly beautiful place as you can see from the photographs. It looks very small from the front but is surprisingly spacious inside. The glass staircase is quite an architectural work of art. The whole building has an air of calm whilst being light and airy. Both clients and the team really love this place and we’re very proud of it.

We think the fact that we’ve been around for such a long time is definitely an outstanding achievement, we have led the way in beauty in the Harrogate area and kept our standards year on year.

5

outstanding achievements

We feel one of our biggest outstanding achievements is the fact that we have continued to retain Crown salon status from the very first year it started. We were thrilled to receive this award all those years ago and still get a buzz when we yet again collect our award. We never take it for granted and continue to work hard for it year on year. Our latest big achievement was to see out Senior therapist Hannah Burley selected for therapist of the year and to be awarded runner up after a rigorous selection process. We were so proud of her and the whole team as well as clients were behind her all the way.

The salon have been huge supporters of St Michaels Hospice and have carried out countless charity events for them, raising thousands of pounds. We have also recently donated to a local animal rescue centre, Moorview. They also take our old towels which they put to good use‌ we like to recycle where possible! We have continued to carry Guinot as our only skincare and facial brand. We feel so passionate about Guinot and love to be able to offer such a high standard of treatments and to retail such high quality products. We couldn’t do what we do so well with any other brand. We definitely feel this is an achievement in such a saturated market, sticking to what we believe in works for us and for our clients.

We have certainly faced our challenges over the years and have always tackled them head on, under the unfaltering leadership of Sheila then Angela. Nothing is ever plain sailing and certainly the beauty industry has taken a bashing during times of recession due to the ‘luxury’ rather than ‘necessity’ nature of the business. We have always adapted and looked to ways of increasing our client base and have never become complacent even though we are well established in the area.

5

challenges faced

Harrogate is saturated with salons both big and small. Whilst this could potentially be a negative, we have used this in our favour and decided not to ‘try’ to be like them but to maintain our own USP and to be different. We see this as a positive rather than a negative situation and embrace the competition. There is a place for all of us! The big challenges for us were firstly moving the business 9 years ago, which was a risk but proved to be one of the best things we could have done. We then were hit with a number of team members leaving to go to a local spa, bit of a ‘grass greener’ situation. We held tight at this point and kept going on minimal staff and soon recruited some fantastic people and were back on top once more. As mentioned earlier recession will always remain the biggest challenge for us but we cut back where we could, tightened our belts and maintained what we do without losing our quality standards.

“ I have been an extremely happy client at Sheila Henry for the last 6 years. I have a Guinot facial every 6 weeks and eyebrow treatments every 3 weeks. I have also had manicures, pedicures, laser and thread vein treatments. When I arrive I am always greeted by the wonderful receptionists who are very welcoming and chat with me until my therapist is ready for me. Appointments are always on time and never hurried.

client testimonials

My treatments are usually with Angela who immediately puts her clients at ease with her friendly manner and we always find ourselves having lots to talk about. She is very knowledgeable about both the treatments and the products she is using and is always willing to answer any questions I have and keeps me up to date with anything new from Guinot or any current promotions. I love the Guinot products used at Sheila Henry. Having a sensitive skin, I was at first concerned that I would be unable to use them without having a reaction but I am able to use anything from the Guinot range without any problem. The facials always leave my skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated for days afterwards. The whole experience from walking through the door to leaving the salon is expertly done with a very friendly atmosphere and enthusiastic staff along with the beautiful surroundings of the treatment rooms.” Nichola Saphir.

“My name is Jackie Hedgecock and I am nearly 73, I have been coming to Sheila Henry’s for about 30 years nearly as long as Angela has been there. I have had various facials over the years now having Hydralift and Hydra cellular energy. I use Guinot anti fatigue face mask and biological peeling gel which are very good.I have always been treated so very well at the salon, they are very friendly and professional and have been very helpful as I have aged! I wish them every success.” Jackie

“I have been a Sheila Henry customer for over 10 years now and wouldn’t contemplate moving. The staff are consistently professional and welcoming and standards of care, treatment and the general atmosphere is outstanding. This is a salon that knows its business yet has a warm, personal approach. I am made aware on innovations and given opportunities to try new techniques and products as well as review my skin care regime. Entering the Coach House is like stepping into an oasis of calm. Most welcome at the end of a busy day. This is a fabulous and outstanding salon that deserves acknowledgement in this busy and competitive marketplace.” Claire Craven-Griffiths aged 57

Always the big question…. How do we grow whilst keeping standards high?

7 whats next?

We have recently experienced a massive change in the business due to the departure of Sheila after 44 years. The future for Sheila Henry is now in the hands of Angela. We can safely way the the intention is to continue to grow and develop whilst maintaining our position. This will include working alongside Guinot to offer the highest quality treatment and advice in the area. It is quite exciting to have this prospect and we see Guinot growing and developing more so now than in previous years. The launch of new products on a regular basis enables us to keep our clients up-to-date, this keeps them interested and wanting more! The input from all our team at regular meetings also helps us to come up with new ideas and promotions along with the help of our wonderful BDM Angela. We couldn’t do what we do without Guinot on board so here’s to many years of success for all of us.
