the classical designs of theaters, auditoriums and playhouses have always privileged the stage as the central organizational focus and, hence, the resulting architecture is conventionally introverted and highly-structured //some modern iterations of the typology usually exhibit a distinct separation between spatial experiences and neglect to explore the possible relationships of the stage beyond the adjacent audience // therefore, this proposal is for a public entertainment venue organized around a central performance space but inspired by the cabaret-style of stage design // this project aims to reconfigure the binary association between performer and spectator by compounding these dualities with the variable elements introduced from the public realm the programmatic sequence through and organization of the project was based on the progression from the unadulterated public exterior towards an organized interior //a design code was then derived using the nodal and tangential relationships established for the site, framing a self-referencing system for making aesthetic and programmatic choices // the study translated into a series of stack configurations that, when coded with values of concordance between program-types and space-types, were able to inform the final design //the project conveys a spatial sequence with an aesthetic character that responds to the interdependency of program and the threading together of experiences based on a dialogue of architectural harmony and concordance

DESIGN PARAMETERS

SPATIAL HARMONY + PROGRAMMATIC CONCORDANCE

contextual parameters based on intimacy (public vs private) determined the location, transformation and classification of nodes on the site

tangential relationships between the nodes inform both the articulation of geometry and distribution of program 2

modern cities perform much like a natural ecosystem, thriving on interconnectivity and diversity and whose vitality diminishes when dynamic relationships based on varying patterns of living become stagnant //any architecture that attempts to operate in this context must utilize these patterns, embedded in the infrastructure of developing cities, if it is to revitalize the urban landscape // this proposal seeks to improve the vitality of the city by acting as a medium for disparate urban segments to interrelate and act as a seamless whole //by interconnecting the different programmatic functions of the surrounding site, the project aims to be a catalyst for diversifying a homogenous urban environment the programmatic organization of the entire complex is largely based on circulation patterns derived from historical studies of the surrounding urban context //examination and subsequent reconfiguration of the neighboring infrastructure inspired new avenues for interconnecting centers of major activity adjacent to the site that allowed for new pathways to be developed in and around the complex // different building programs were then assigned to various lengths of circulation and were designed so that they would transition into each other based on their specific spatial interrelationship // the project purports means of programmatic organization that weaves together several different elements into a cohesive, yet dynamic, sequence of spaces that supports different patterns of living

modern urban structures have reacted to new responsibilities of being metropolitan micro-communities and acting as hubs that accommodate a plethora of different users //the high-rise represents the opportunity to organize, in a myriad of ways, a heterogeneous environment on the interior complemented by a unique aesthetic character on the exterior //the proposal is for a mixed-use retail and residential building that creates both a spatial and formal composition where the elements illustrate a drifting faรงade that echoes interior relationships between a shifting polarity of program-types //the key design strategy is to apply operations that transform the normative condition of the typical high-rise building so that elements change in scale, overlap and encourage dynamic interrelationships the organizational structure of the project was developed from a unit-to-whole relationship study in which a highly developed cell informs an overarching aesthetic language and programmatic basis of a larger conglomeration //extreme differences in celltypes were bridged using slightly reconstructed intermediate parts so that the faรงade appears as an animation conveying changes in scale and position //when associated with different programs - transient ones like retail versus recurring ones like residential - the formal gestures begin to adopt an architectonic strategy that also mirrors the internal spatial organization //the fluidity of this configuration was designed to accommodate the different categories of occupants and visitors, maintaining the spirit of interconnectivity with atriums, balconies, mezzanines and half-levels that blend spaces together vertically and offering a diversified experience anywhere in the complex

Traveling Proposal BARCELONA, SPAIN

my interest in the writings of witold rybczynski and the lectures of daniel libeskind has invoked within me a deep fascination in the role of art in architectural inspiration, not on a disciplinary basis commonly argued over in academic circles but rather at a spiritual and cultural level // as an artist who is schooled in traditional media and hailing from a country famous for art, the view of architecture as art is of special significance to me and being able to explore an arena where all facets of art are on display would be the most ideal travel destination //barcelona has long been the home of amazing architecture inspired by a unique and unmistakably rich heritage that has also generated some of the world’s best music, fashion and food // exploring the city would be an opportunity to investigate, first hand, how an architecture responds to an environment where other art forms are just as visually strong and vibrant, both historically and contemporaneously the chosen venue is dotted with architecture from past legends like mies and gaudi and modern masters like calatrava, giving me a greater historical and stylistic range //additionally, there are important urban projects and town planning initiatives to be experienced like their improved railways system and numerous parks //other than the architectural and infrastructural aspects of the city, the next points of interest are its fashion shows and music festivals //barcelona is sure to be an experience of great learning and discovery and is an advantageous departure point for other cities in nearby italy, france and switzerland itinerary: barcelona pavilion, parc guell, torre telefonica, torre diagonal, barceloneta market, media tic, the brandery...
