university of pennsylvania arch 602 spring 2014 in collaboration w/ yannick rodriguez-diaz instructor: kutan ayata [young and ayata]
the tower typology has been traditionally defined by its structural, aesthetic and programmatic necessities, and the most imposing component has been the central core // this methodology has offered, through numerous examples of office skyscrapers, a solution to these limitations through subdivision around a designed centerpiece // however, despite its efficiency and predictable design, it is not a viable framework that would allow for a flexible self-organizational model to fully flourish // the proposal is for an office tower that seeks to decentralize the core so that its functions exist within a highly articulated building envelope, thus freeing the interior space in its entirety // by forcing services outward, and program inward, the project aims to reconfigure the normative aesthetic, functional and structural conditions of the tower in which their relationship changes with the undulating form that prescribes a new type of spatial hierarchy

food is an increasingly important element in the organizing and sustaining of cities and it is crucial that architecture relate to the social impact of dining, ameliorate harm from waste and enhance facets of production // inspired by the research of carolyn steel, urban development should seek to incorporate its local food networks and become a catalyst for agricultural production, distribution and reclamation // this proposal is for a mixed-use development where both the commercial and residential program was focused on the recycling of waste as a means for enabling a cradle-to-cradle system for urban agriculture // growing, eating and recycling of food is a common denominator for all life-styles and was used as the inspiration for reimagining the live-work housing typology // furthermore, the complex was designed to facilitate the reception of food waste, recycling that material, and redistributing useful resources on-site and throughout the city

Drfit | Dichotomy
modern urban structures have reacted to emerging responsibilities of being metropolitan micro-communities and acting as hubs that accommodate a plethora of different users // the high-rise represents the opportunity to organize, in a myriad of ways, a heterogeneous environment on the interior complemented by a unique aesthetic character on the exterior // the proposal is for a mixed-use retail and residential building that creates both a spatial and formal composition where the elements illustrate a drifting faรงade that echoes interior relationships between a shifting polarity of program-types // the fluidity of this configuration was designed to accommodate the different categories of occupants and visitors, maintaining the spirit of interconnectivity with atriums, balconies, mezzanines and half-levels that blend different spaces together vertically and offering a diversified experience anywhere in the complex

modern cities perform much like a natural ecosystem, thriving on interconnectivity and diversity and whose vitality diminishes when dynamic relationships based on varying patterns of living become stagnant //any architecture that attempts to operate in this context must utilize these patterns, embedded in the infrastructure of developing cities, if it is to revitalize the urban landscape //this proposal seeks to improve the vitality of the surrounding area by becoming a medium for the disparate urban segments to interrelate and act as a whole //examination and reconfiguration of the neighboring infrastructure inspired new avenues for interconnecting centers of major activity adjacent to the site that allowed for new pathways to be developed in and around the complex //this project purports means of programmatic organization that weaves together several different elements into a cohesive, yet dynamic, sequence of spaces that supports different patterns of living

Public + Forum university of pennsylvania arch 501 fall 2012 instructor: simon kim [ikstudio]
the classical designs of theaters, auditoriums and playhouses have always privileged the stage as the central organizational focus and, hence, the resulting architecture is conventionally introverted and highly-structured //some modern iterations of the typology usually exhibit a distinct separation between spatial experiences and neglect to explore the possible relationships of the stage beyond the adjacent audience //therefore, this proposal is for a public entertainment venue organized around a central performance space but inspired by the cabaret-style of stage design //the programmatic sequence through and organization of the project was based on the progression from the unadulterated public exterior towards an organized interior //the project conveys a spatial sequence with an aesthetic character that responds to the interdependency of program and the threading together of experiences based on a dialogue of architectural harmony and concordance

Layered Aggression university of pennsylvania arch 704 spring 2015 in collaboration w/ yannick rodriguez-diaz instructor: ali rahim [contemporary architecture practice]
the alexander mcqueen brand is one of provocation that evokes a deliberately aggressive emotion through the deployment of different materials and forms // the capacity for an architecture to employ surfaces and volumes to create an affect that can only be achieved when they are bundled, bunched, and propagated excessively in a controlled tension sets up the argument for an architectural logic based on formal redundancy // the proposal is for a flagship retail and office space where this logic manifests itself in the management of articulated surfaces that undergo a characteristic change in order to accomplish different architectural goals // densification, tightening, relaxing and unfurling of layers combines structural necessity, space-making and ornament into a system of packed surfaces which is inspired by the unique compositional style of haute couture
