EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome Vanessa

PHOTOGRAPH DOMINIC BLACKMORE STYLING SARITA SHARMA

Vanessa Richmond, Editor

Yonks ago, when I was in my twenties and working at the very chic Red magazine, the team was asked to give quotes for a feature about how they spent Christmas Day. I was embarrassed to take part, because everyone else’s involved smoked-salmon and Champagne brunches, bracing country walks and polite, post-lunch present opening in front of the Queen’s speech, all done while wearing fancy cashmere sweaters. In contrast, Richmond Family Christmases were an unfettered binge of slobbery and self-indulgence, with prezzies ripped open before dawn, selection-box breakfasts in tea-stained reindeer PJs and semicomatose movie sessions in the afternoon, because by then everyone was feeling too tired, farty and argumentative to leave the house. Even Pa Richmond, usually a moderating inf luence, was happy to abandon all the normal rules just for one day. I’ve tried to introduce more style and decorum over the years, but it’s a losing battle and, TBH, I kinda love it. Whatever your family’s festive style, I hope that every minute is full of joy.

Just when you’ve got to grips with grey walls, Dulux announces its colour of the year and it’s… brown. Yup, Spiced Honey is an orangey-caramel tone that sounds delicious and actually looks pretty cosy and soothing, too. It’s effective at warming up cool blush pinks or calming down bold teals and reds, but most lush teamed with other neutrals, Kelly-Hoppen style. Plus, our editor got a hot tip from a trend predictor recently that bitter chocolate brown is going to be the next big thing. You heard it here first!

‘I’ve brought this old barn back to life’ Converting a ramshackle barn in the northern French countryside has been a long but ultimately satisfying journey for Rachel Coppens

I wanted to move out into the countryside before the birth of my first child, and when I walked into this barn, I knew it was everything I had been looking for. I could imagine living here and knew I’d found our home

t was the stunning vaulted ceiling that clinched it for Rachel Coppens when she first visited this ramshackle barn just outside Lille. While the dilapidated structure needed a huge amount of work, for Rachel and her now ex-husband, the exposed beams, stunning vaulted ceiling, vast open-plan space and countryside location far outweighed any negatives. ‘We were living in the centre of Lille, but wanted to move out into the countryside,’ says Rachel. ‘The large, open interior and outdoor space was everything we needed.’ They undertook much of the renovation work themselves, conserving and restoring the barn’s original framework and adding a timber extension. The original 95sq m outbuilding houses the living and dining space and connecting kitchen, while the main bedroom, en suite, two additional bedrooms and bathroom are in a new extension. Towards the end of the project, a parquet floor that had been painstakingly laid was ruined by a flood. ‘We came back from holiday to find ourselves knee deep in water, with the house flooded due to heavy rain,’ says Rachel. ‘We didn’t have the energy to start over, so we had the floor raised, installed underfloor heating and fitted a concrete floor with a white epoxy resin coating. I’m so glad we did, as it makes the space feel so much brighter and is more comfortable underfoot.’ Rachel couldn’t wait to get started on the interior. ‘My style is a bit of a melting pot – a mixture of rustic and bohemian influences. I travel a lot for my work, which is a source of inspiration, so the interior here is a real blend. I’m lucky to live so close to Lille and near Belgium, where there are lots of antiques and interiors shops. I love unearthing old furniture and other pieces that give this place originality and character.’

Seek out salvage

Rachel has created a relaxed, eclectic look by mixing vintage and reclaimed furniture with new buys, but all share a rustic, industrial or modern Scandi vibe that works with her neutral palette.

‘The kitchen worktops are made from old railway sleepers I found in an architectural salvage yard here in Lille. They’re tough and hard wearing, and lend a rustic touch to the contemporary gloss white cabinets.’

STYLE HERO

‘Neutrals are my go-to colours’ Anne-Laure Couplet, the creative force behind Maisons du Monde, loves colour, but prefers to keep things more subtle in her own home

A

nne-Laure has the final say on every Maisons du Monde product, as well as the look of the company’s stores and concessions. She lives in a three-bed apartment in Paris with her husband and two children. Our home is decorated in just two colours – a bright, milky white and a charcoal shade. I think the combination of the two creates a soft, cosy feel. I’ve added linen textiles to bring even more comfort to each room. Layering up textures is a great way to add depth. It’s easy to give a sofa or armchair a makeover just by adding throws. Layering weighty fabrics will create a sumptuous look, while linens and cotton will give it a relaxed feel. My whole career has revolved around textiles. Before Maisons du Monde, I worked for a variety of fashion companies. I love how textiles can change a home. I haven’t always surrounded myself with neutral shades. Years ago, I painted my entire apartment yellow! It was a disaster. We’ve all made decorating mistakes. I love beautiful wooden furniture. Even our sand-coloured sofa has light wood panels on the sides. It’s where

STYLE HERO all the family gathers, which makes the living room my favourite space. It’s in the centre of our apartment and is filled with candles, with the walls covered in black and white paintings and African artwork.

NEUTRAL SPACE Century industrial desk, £574; Pitaya armchair, £214; Naturaliste display case, £769, all Maisons du Monde

Black and white artwork is a bit of a theme in our flat. One of our bedroom walls is dedicated to old black and white movie posters, which I really love. The apartment faces directly onto a park, so when I wake up each morning, I can hear the birds singing in the trees. When you live in the city, I think it’s really important to be close to nature, wherever possible. I like to switch up my bedlinen regularly to change the look of the room. I swap between dramatically different styles, so one week it’ll be an ethnic print and the next a Berber-style pattern or classic all-white sheets.

AND RELAX Kant four-seater sofa in burgundy, £1,049, Maisons du Monde

Another design trick I love is to mismatch dining chairs. Adding one or two new chairs to an existing set adds a pop of personality to a traditional dining setting. I love our Multipl’s metal dining chairs from Maisons du Monde. They come in 13 colours – and they’re stackable!

RING OF FIRE Cesar gold metal and glass candle holder, £14.39, Maisons du Monde

‘One of our bedroom walls is dedicated to old black and white movie posters.’ Breakfast at Tiffany’s framed print, from £39.95, Juniqe

For inspiration, Marrakech is amazing. They have so many talented craftsmen and women creating the most beautiful pieces. Their work is a labour of love rather than a job and it shows in their finished products. I try to go there at least twice a year as I love to travel.

‘I love to visit Marrakech and meet all the craftspeople who create the most beautiful pieces’

WHAT I’VE LEARNED

We’re all guilty of having those go-to colours we always fall back on. But you’ll never find your ultimate scheme unless you experiment. Start with a cushion in a new shade, and build up from there

38 JANUARY 2019

This Christmas, I’m going to decorate using pale blue decorations. The look that I’m aiming for is inspired by one of Maisons du Monde’s Christmas themes this year, called Cosy Blue. It’s a really relaxed, comfortable look, with a nod to the hygge trend, which I find so inspiring.

I plan to redo my kitchen soon. I’d like to go for a more modern kitchen in all white, with mixed woods and a grey wooden floor.

I love the flow of this house. You come into the cosy sitting room, the snug and the dining area. The kitchen is the final wow moment

atalie Bowles had a vision for her Fifties semi. Having tried to buy the house next door to it three times without success, she knew exactly what she wanted when finally the neighbouring house came up for sale. ‘We wanted to extend it to achieve the layout that we had liked so much in the property next door. It was the only house on the street that had not been extended and because it was untouched, we were able to put our own stamp on it,’ she says. ‘We could take it back to its bare bones and install features as we wished, without having to make any compromises.’ Using tradespeople that Natalie had known for years, work started with replacing all the skirtings, architraves and doors. The banisters and spindles were next, and then they updated the fireplaces. ‘We had central heating installed and the electrics rewired, then we redecorated and fitted a new bathroom.’ Once that stage was complete, the couple took a six month break before starting work on the kitchen extension in January 2018. The original kitchen is now a useful utility room. ‘I know my style inside-out as I worked in an interiors shop for a number of years, which was a valuable learning experience,’ says Natalie. ‘I’ve created a home that feels restful, with a hint of French country style set against a neutral backdrop of whites, taupes and greys. I love that classic, subtle colour palette.’ At Christmas time, the family enjoy a low-key vibe. ‘Life is so busy, so on Christmas Eve it will be just the three of us. We treat ourselves to nibbles in front of a good movie, then we’ll be ready to party with the wider family on Christmas Day.’

We’ll be hosting Christmas for the first time this year – now we have a dining table that’s big enough!

fter outgrowing their last home, Lisa Mistry and her husband Anand were attracted to this flat, which was part of a converted cardboard factory in Manchester’s city centre. Despite the place needing some serious work, the couple bought it in June 2016 and devised a grand plan to give the layout an overhaul before moving in. ‘We fell in love with it because of how much space it had, and its central location,’ says Lisa, ‘but the layout was all wrong, the ceilings needed lights, the whole place needed rewiring, and the flooring had been ruined by stiletto marks and needed levelling.’ The large open-plan living, dining and kitchen space was arranged over two levels, so the first job was to raise the floor and make it all one uninterrupted space. The kitchen was opened up and walls knocked down to enlarge the second bedroom. ‘The project took a year to complete and we moved into my parents’ house when we realised how much needed doing – we literally ripped the place apart!’ says Lisa. ‘We finally moved back in August 2017 and I love that the living space is now completely open plan. It’s so much lighter than before and extending the kitchen into the living area has given us a breakfast bar – another place to eat.’ With the main building work done, Lisa could turn her attention to the decor. ‘We’ve split the main space into three and made each area as cosy as possible,’ she says. ‘My style is very much about clean lines and a simple monochrome colour palette. I love Scandi style, with lots of natural textures and materials, so I’ve incorporated concrete and wood where I can. I created mood boards and found inspiration on Instagram, where I’ve charted our home progress at @loft208.’

Ibis hanging chair, H112xW104xD66cm, £294.50, Maisons du Monde

HOW TO HANG YOUR CHAIR Check the maximum weight capacity before you buy, as it can vary between 120–200kg. If the hanging chair doesn’t come with its own stand, think about the best place to hang it. You’ll want somewhere it can hang without causing an obstruction and where it won’t bang into any walls. It should hang about 90-110cm above the floor.

SUPER BOWL Channel Sixties style with this woven rattan bowl shaped chair. Hanging indoor bowl chair in rattan, H108x W108xD83cm, £625, Out There Interiors

If you’re not a DIY pro, chair hanging is best left to a professional. It must be hung from a beam or ceiling joist that is able to support the weight of the chair and person sitting in it. If you’re concerned about support limits, go for a chair with two hanging rings so you can distribute the weight between two beams.

HANG OUT This sturdy black metal indoor/outdoor chair comes complete with a hanging stand. Cannock hanging chair in polyester and metal, H198xW96xD96cm, £230, B&Q FEATURE LISA FAZZANI

Hang your chair pivotstyle, which will let you rotate it 360 degrees, or hang from two ropes to rock back and forth. If hanging hardware isn’t included, you’ll need a specialist screw-in hook for the ceiling, plus a heavy-duty chain or rope to hang the chair from and connecting carabiners or S hooks, – all must be able to support at least 140kg.

TWO’S COMPANY Cosy up in this deluxe double chair with cushion and headrests. Double indoor/outdoor hanging chair in steel and PU woven rattan, H186xW165xD68cm, £675, Cox & Cox

If your support beam isn’t visible, you’ll need to locate it using a stud finder, which will pinpoint the centre of the beam. Then you can drill a hole and screw in the hanging hook before connecting your chain or rope and hanging the chair.

UPTOWN-CHIC LIVING ROOM Going for glamour? The crucial element is plush texture, so pick a velvet-covered chair, a brocade curtain, a silk cushion – or all three! Furniture should be metal and glass, but if wood works for you, go for dark walnut… or just paint old pieces dark grey to make them fit

I’d always wanted a house like this, even while we were living abroad, so I had pretty much dreamed up the style for the layout and interior decor long before we moved in

ue Stacey had been planning her dream home for years. But living in Singapore, due to her husband Matt’s job, meant she’d had to put her plans on hold. ‘Although we’d been living abroad for five years, I’d amassed a collection of tear sheets, pins and screen grabs,’ she says. By the time the family moved back to the UK, Sue was itching to put her ideas into action. But even after finding this double-fronted Victorian property in south London, she had to bide her time while interior designer Nicola Hicks worked with builders to complete a major overhaul of the house. Nicola understood what Sue had in her mind’s eye. ‘I had a clear vision,’ says Sue. ‘But it wouldn’t have come together in this way without Nicola.’ Typical of many Victorian houses, the rooms lacked any sense of openness or flow. This included a skinny kitchen at the side of the house with no view of the outside space. ‘The garden was a big reason for moving here and we wanted to be able to appreciate it all year round,’ says Sue. Now, Crittal glazing serves as a wall at the rear of the house, drawing in lots of natural light. Upstairs, three bedrooms were reconfigured so they now all have en suites, while the build also dug down to enlarge the old cellar, creating a lower-ground floor space. ‘Before we know it, we’ll have three teenagers who will all want to do their own thing, so this seemed a great opportunity to plan ahead,’ says Sue. ‘There’s plenty of space down there for a games or cinema room.’ Sue and Matt were also keen to reinstate the house’s period features, such as the Victorian fireplaces, ceiling roses and cornicing, which had all been stripped out. ‘Although we wanted to make the house feel modern, we also wanted to pay homage to its past,’ says Sue.

WIDE MIRROR Makes a dark, narrow hallway seem bigger and brighter

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

40 Easy style updates

From best buys and clever tricks to mini decor projects… this is our roundup of the simplest, quickest ways to make your home more beautiful now

1

Dress the table for a party

Make meal times more magical by adding a sparkly runner, battery-powered fairy lights and a few paper party hats and poppers to the table top. Lustre wine glasses and Champagne flutes, both £20 for four, all Dunelm

STYLE & DECOR Pepparkorn vases, from £6; Smycka artificial eucalyptus, £2.50 a sprig; Strala LED lighting chain with 160 battery operated lights, £12; Vinter 2018 candle dish in gold, £9, all Ikea

2

Fill vases with lush greenery

For a chic but subtle way to festively decorate a sideboard or mantelpiece, display sprigs of eucalyptus in glass vases of varying heights. Add silver or glitter sprayed thistle if you still want to add a bit of sparkle to the arrangements.

3

SPRUCE UP PLAIN TABLEWARE

To give a plain white set of crockery a more celebratory feel at your next dinner party, invest in some special place mats to glam up the table top in an instant. Go for matching coasters to really ramp up the bling.

Silver beaded place mats, £20 for two, Laura Ashley

5

HAVE AN OPEN BAR Fill a drinks dispenser with a pre-mixed cocktail so guests can help themselves to a top-up. Try Ikea’s Forfroskning jar with tap, £16, and attach a luggage label with a list of the included ingredients and alcohols.

4

DIM THE LIGHTS FOR A COSY GLOW

To create an atmospheric evening table centrepiece, sit candle holders and candles of varying sizes along a simple table runner, for a super flattering glow.

Wire star with foliage, £12, Waitrose & Partners

6

GIVE DOORS A FESTIVE FLOURISH

Swap the traditional Christmas wreath from the front door for a more understated offering, once it nears New Year’s Eve. Or hang simple wire star wreaths, like this one from Waitrose & Partners, from bedroom, bathroom or kitchen doors to keep the festivities flowing throughout your home. JANUARY 2019

97

7

10

LIGHT UP WINDOW FRAMES Secure swags of fairy lights in place around a window frame with clear hanging hooks, £4, Homebase.

8

Swap in some sparkle

Ensure your living room has just the right level of glamour for entertaining guests, by adding touches of bling with sequin covered cushions, metallic lanterns and twinkling fairy lights.

LET YOUR GUESTS HELP THEMSELVES

Pile up golden cake stands with both sweet and savoury canapés and let guests nibble as they please, so you’re free to mingle. Vinter 2018 three tier serving stand in gold, £19, Ikea

9

Go for golds

Stick to the same colour scheme as your decorations when laying your dining table, for a streamlined and sophisticated feel. Add candlelight and sprigs of foliage to complete the look.

98 JANUARY 2019

1

PASS OUT PAPER PLATES Save on the washing up (and the broken glasses) by using fancy paper plates and cups at your next soirée instead. Ginger Ray has a great selection of party-perfect options to ensure they fit your scheme.

STYLE & DECOR

12

WHEEL OUT THE WHISKIES

Raskog trolley in dark blue, £50; gift wrap, from £4 a roll, Ikea

Rather than uproot guests following dinner, why not bring the late night drinks to them? Load up a bar cart with a selection of aperitifs, ice and your best glasses and let the party continue.

Gold mirrored drinks trolley, £99.99, HomeSense

13

Greet guests with gifts

For friends visiting later in the holidays, stack their gifts on a trolley rather than leaving under the tree, and wheel out when they arrive for a warm welcome.

14

DISPLAY CARDS ON STRING Make a simple garland by pegging cards to a length of string with washi tapedecorated pegs. Finish it off by tying mini baubles in-between the cards. Ophelia chandelier, £180, Abigail Ahern range; Nordic smoke glasses, £7 each; black cutlery, £35 for 16 pieces; silver and white napkins, £10 for four; all Debenhams

15

Disguise a makeshift table

When you need to join two tables together for an extra long dining table, cover them with a smart, oversized linen tablecloth. The textured surface will help hide any gaps, bumps and joins.

16

Hang a wreath chandelier

Attach lengths of ribbon to an oversized faux wreath and hang from hooks in the ceiling. Wind fairy lights, fresh greenery, pinecones and baubles around the wreath for a stunning display.

17

SHOW OFF YOUR SKILLS Impress guests with your mixologist skills and create a bespoke cocktail just for them. As long as you have the right ‘kit’ even a simple mojito will go down a treat.

HOW ALEX AND TOM DID IT ‘The kitchen hadn’t been touched for decades and needed a total overhaul. The biggest challenge was working out how to fit in a dining area. In the end, we ditched the L-shaped layout and designed the room around booth-style seating as our starting point. We took advice from British Standard before finalising the design and worked closely with our carpenter who fitted the units to bring the room together. I spent

a lot of time sourcing things online. If you know what you want and have time to search, you can find things more cheaply and it enables you to find unusual pieces. We renovated the entire house at the same time, so we moved out for a few months while the work was in progress. Overall, the project, including the carpentry and decoration, cost about £5,000, but the finished kitchen looks a million dollars.’

BELOW ‘The Belfast sink is from Villeroy & Boch, but I picked it up for less on eBay,’ says Alex. ‘The worktops are iroko and we spent many evenings oiling them to protect them and bring out the natural colour of the wood. I love thick worktops – they just look more solid.’ Similar Belfast sink, £186; brass mixer tap, £238.80; both Cox’s Architectural. Iroko worktops, price on request, British Standard

HOW ANNA DID IT ‘The challenge was to create more space by taking down walls. I really wanted to be part of things while I was preparing food. I was on a strict budget, so I used a building firm I knew, avoiding the need for an architect. I did need a structural engineer to draw up plans, though, to remove the wall between the kitchen and living room, as well as the kitchen and a small adjoining loo. Supporting steels were put in where a chimney breast was

removed. Floorboards were reused from elsewhere in the kitchen to replace the hearth. The kitchen had to be rewired to move the hob to the centre. I’ve ended up with more space than I thought was there to start with! The work took eight weeks and cost £35,000. We ate in my parents’ flat downstairs, which was handy. Now it’s finished, I’m delighted at how well everything works for us – we spend all our time in this space.’

BELOW ‘Having the hob in the middle of the room was a bit of a job, but we were able to run cables and ducting under the floor,’ says Anna. ‘Placing the sofa with its back to the kitchen zones off the seating area.’ Star, £65, The White Company. Make it work for you ANNA’S CHOICE: MARBLE-LOOK WORKTOPS Looking to inject a touch of luxury into your kitchen without blowing the budget? Follow Anna’s lead… Sometimes you’ve just got to fake it to make it when budgets are tight. However, in the case of natural marble worktops, many find opting for faux marble over the real deal is actually the better option, regardless of cost. This is because marble is a relatively soft stone that can stain and scratch without due care. So if natural ageing doesn’t charm you, faking it could be better a choice for you.

Q

What is the cheapest option? Laminates are without a doubt the most affordable choice. Plus, improvements in photographic and printing techniques mean there are now some very realistic designs on the market. To suspend belief a little further, look for laminates with a textural finish, that mimics the tactile softness of real marble. But laminates can be tricky to joint, and you’ll need to be careful with your choice of sink, especially if you want an undermounted model.

Q

And if laminate’s not for me? The next best solution is solid surfaces (aka composites). Anna’s kitchen features Minerva’s solid surface, which is made from polymer resins, a mineral filler and pigments. Minerva can be cut with normal woodworking tools, which means it can be cut to size on site. Corian is another brand of solid surface, but any templating is done

off-site. Unlike laminates, scratches or stains can be gently sanded out.

Q

Budget aside, what’s best? Quartz composite surfaces come in various marble-inspired designs. The benefit of quartz lies in its durability. You should still use trivets and chopping boards, but quartz worktops are infinitely more resilient than marble and look shiny and new for years.

A grey island offsets the marble-look top beautifully

Q

Will it look realistic? That’s down to the edges. On real marble and solid surfaces, the veining runs right through its core. Whereas most laminates, and some quartz, only have the marble print on the top. However, there are a few quartz options that are veined on the edge profile, too, such as Radianz. For laminates, your best bet is to go for a curved front edge and hide the end panels against walls. Also, try to avoid pattern repeats in the veining. Natural marble is unique, so any exact matches will scream ‘fake’.

BEST FOR…

Do order samples before you buy – it’s impossible to tell how realistic the marble design is from a screen, and you will also get to feel the finish SIMON BOOCOCK, MD, CRL STONE

HEAVY USE CRL Stone’s Ceralsio ceramic worktops promise even better heat, scratch and stain resistance than quartz. It comes in several veined marble designs, all with a guarantee. AUTHENTICITY Formica’s Axiom True Scale laminate worktops avoid obvious pattern repeat, common on standard worktops. NEAT JOINS Corian’s solid tops can be seamlessly jointed on site, as well as sculpted around corners and even into sinks. We love the swirly new Grey Onyx design for a fresh take on classic marble.

HOW SARAH AND PAUL DID IT ‘Just having a bath wasn’t ideal, because whenever we had guests to stay they’d ask to use the shower in our en suite instead. We gained about 2sq m by knocking out the chimney breast, which was just enough space to put in a shower. The builders stripped out the room at the same time and built a stud wall to hide the basin and loo pipework. Then the room was plastered and underfloor heating laid. We re-used the

old bath, positioning it under the window, and cut holes in the acrylic to fit new taps, as the old ones had been wall mounted. The cement floor tiles were the inspiration for the look of the room, but took ages to lay – along with the herringbone wall tiles – because of the complicated pattern. The job took a month and the building work cost £4,500. It’s a lovely room to relax in and we love everything about it.’

BELOW ‘I found this Fifties sideboard on Gumtree for £50 and turned it into a stand for the countertop basin. rchie and Tricia Macdonald’s home has been in the latter’s family for nearly 60 years. ‘My father bought the site in 1959,’ she explains. ‘A house was built on it, but it became too big for my parents after my sister and I left home, so my father developed the outbuilding to live in instead, and they moved into it in the early Eighties.’

CHANGING HANDS Tricia and her husband, Archie,

then inherited the property in 2013 and they set about making it work for them. ‘It was too small, with only one bedroom and bathroom, and no views of the sea,’ says Tricia. Local architect Matthew Johnson of A449 Architects came on board and proposed a plan to extend. ‘The logical position for the extension was the raised terrace at the east end of the site,’ he says. SOLVING PROBLEMS ‘When they took off the roof, they

found rot in the rafters and discovered the walls were a bit wobbly!’ says Tricia. ‘Matthew thought that if we knocked down three walls of the cottage, we could approach it as a new build and save VAT.’ The revised planning application was accepted and the house began to take shape, while the couple rented a nearby property during the 17-month project. Archie was on site every day. ‘It was good to be there when decisions had to be made quickly,’ he says. SMART CHOICES The couple’s focus throughout was

on simple, high-quality finishes and hard-wearing materials, such as the engineered oak flooring. They also invested in underfloor heating and high levels of insulation, which has paid off: ‘The house is so well insulated, the wood-burning stove is effectively cosmetic – we think twice about putting it on as it can get too hot.’ Overall, the project has been a success: ‘There’s nothing we would change about the house,’ says Tricia.

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT…

Building near the sea

The original part of the building has a long corridor running its full length, leading to a study with a sea view at the end

Matthew Johnson of A449 Architects has the lowdown…

The property now has an en-suite main bedroom, as well as this guest room, in the old part of the building

FLOOD RISK IS AN ISSUE An architect will liaise with the planning department and Environment Agency to establish any flood risk.

1

ASPECT AND ORIENTATION ARE KEY It sounds obvious, but in order to make the most of the views, choose long, wide windows so you can track the sun rising and setting during mid-summer.

2

ROOF DESIGN SHOULD BE CLEVER A pitched roof in a coastal setting references a beach hut or the upturned hull of a boat. Plus, a double-height pitched roof guides wind away from courtyard spaces.

3

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED

Underf loor heating is worth the expense. We put in a gas meter reading for our first energy bill, but our supplier couldn’t accept it. We hadn’t used enough gas to make a difference to the reading! So, in terms of energy efficiency, it performs well

CLADDING WILL PROTECT THE WALLS Scorching larch cladding improves its durability against being blasted with sand and salt water, for less maintenance.

4

YOU NEED TO COMBINE THE RIGHT MATERIALS One of the most important factors is how building materials and components work together to avoid wind and water ingress.

‘Glass gives our extension the wow factor’ Clever glazing was key to maximising light in Vivi and Sam Conniff Allende’s new extension

AFTER

The old kitchen was tiny and overlooked the side return

T

he location is what Vivi and Sam Conniff Allende fell in love with when they bought their two-bed Victorian home, but it needed some renovations so it could work for their family. TIME FOR CHANGE

‘The whole house was in an awful condition and the small kitchen overlooked the side return,’ says Vivi. ‘There were storerooms to the rear of the property, so we thought that by knocking these down, we could extend the kitchen out to give space for a dining area with sliding glass doors leading to the garden.’

The couple added a glazed extension to give them a big, bright kitchen

EXPERT HELP

‘We found Plus Rooms (plusrooms. co.uk) who could tackle the whole design and build for a fixed price,’ says Vivi. ‘We worked with them to design the pitched roof kitchen extension, which has three rooflights and a large triangular window above the sliding doors.’

Welcome to my home THE PROPERTY A four-bed Victorian terraced house in southeast London.

A SMOOTH PROJECT

THE VALUE

Once planning permission was granted, the builders set up a temporary kitchen in the living room. ‘It was very exciting to watch the extension grow, seeing the glass going in was such a high point,’ says Vivi.

Bought for £490,000 in 2012; now worth over £1.3million.

Vivi Conniff Allende lives here with her husband Sam and their daughters Scarlett, five, and Frida, 11 months.

Heating an extension

The old galley kitchen has been replaced with this spacious kitchen-diner

James Bernard, director of Plus Rooms, h s the lowdown MEET BUILDING REGULATIONS Any new extension should comply with current building regulations and shouldn’t negatively afect the energy performance of a house.

1

CONSULT AN EXPERT Extra radiators can be added to your existing heating system only if the boiler has the capacity, so consult with a certified plumber before making changes.

2

UPGRADE IF NEEDED Installing an energy eicient boiler can be a relatively expensive option, although the cost of replacement is often ofset by savings in running costs.

3

GO ELECTRIC An electrical heating system is fairly simple to expand, and plugin electric panel radiators or convector heaters may be suitable for a smaller extension.

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED

We built during the winter, which most people avoid because of the weather, but it meant the builders were available and we could buy materials like our flooring in the sales

132 JANUARY 2019

CONSIDER LAYING UNDERFLOOR HEATING Look out for underfloor heating that can integrate with an existing heating system without afecting wall space – an ideal solution for an open-plan set up.

TECH SUPPORT GET THE BEST FROM YOUR BIG TV You spent a lot of money on it, so whether you’re planning on some boxset bingeing over the holidays, watching the latest blockbuster with the family or playing on the games console that Santa brought, make sure it’s giving you its peak performance

Q

Is there a way to improve my TV’s performance? Firstly, check your TV’s position. Ideally, you want it to be opposite the sofa where most people will enjoy a front-on view. And as most action happens in the centre third of the screen, that’s the part you should have at eye level. Also watch out for glare from lamps and windows.

A few simple tweaks can boost your telly viewing experience

Q

FEATURE CHRIS HASLAM PHOTOGRAPH GORAN BOGICEVIC/ALAMY STOCK PHOTO

What about paying extra for high-definition content? It’s worth checking the resolution of your TV; most made in the past few years will be HD (either 720p or 1080p) while newer sets can be 4K (four times as good again). The difference between standard and HD TV channels is enormous, so invest in a set-top Freeview box if your TV can’t play these already. The jump in picture quality between DVD and Blu-ray is also pretty big – Sony’s BDP-S6700 Blu-ray player upscales to 4K, £120, sony.co.uk.

Q

The sound on my TV isn’t great. What can I do? You could connect your TV and hi-fi together using optical cable or RCA connectors, while some newer smart TVs can also stream to Bluetooth speakers. Or, as Jonathan Bennett from Q Acoustics explains, ‘Choose a soundbar, a single speaker with 180-degree sound and built-in subwoofers for deep bass. Try the Playbase (£699, sonos.com). For those with more space, a 5.1 speaker system (five speakers and a subwoofer bass speaker) gives an immersive home cinema sound experience, perfect for movie watching.’

Ideal Home Tip Rather than sticking with the default screen settings, Which? (which.co.uk) has a handy search tool that lists the best possible picture settings for your TV model. Just search ‘getting the best TV picture’ to find the page.

Q

Can I recreate a multiplex experience at home? For the ultimate cinema experience, ideally you need multiple surround sound speakers, a projector, screen and mood lighting, and while there’s no substitute for a quality screen you can at least cheat the lighting. Philips Hue app-controlled light bulbs can now synchronize with your entertainment content – whether that’s movies, games or music – and mimic the colours on screen for a more immersive experience. Prices start at £49

for Hue Bridge, £69 for a portable Hue lamp, meethue.com.

Q

My computer-mad kids are obsessed with something called RGB Gaming – what is it? RGB (Red Green Blue) is a lighting trend in gaming where you buy LED light keyboards and controllers that highlight the keys and buttons. You can also buy RGB speakers (Logitech G560 PC speakers, £209, logitech. com) that boosts sound and syncs with the action on screen and colours change in time with your playing.

1 Add the olive oil, onions and most of the thyme to a large pan. Gently cook over a low heat for about

2 Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/Gas 5. Unroll the pastry and cut out six rounds, each one 11cm in diameter. Transfer to a lightly greased baking tray, brush with beaten egg and prick with a fork, leaving a 1.5cm border unpricked around the edge. Spread the centre of each round with onion, then add

a few little blobs of redcurrant jelly (about 1tsp each) into the middle.

3 Bake for 15min, then remove from the oven. Add a few slices of Brie, scatter over remaining thyme leaves and bake again for 10min.

4 To make the dressing, whisk all the ingredients together, then chill until required. Remove the tarts from the oven and cool for a few minutes before serving with the salad leaves and a drizzle of dressing.

200°C/180°C fan/Gas 6. Pat the scallops dry on kitchen paper, brush with a little oil and season. Heat a ridged griddle pan or frying pan and sear the scallops on both sides to colour. Then transfer to a roasting tin. If the coral isn’t firmly attached to the scallop, cut it away and place on top.

2 Bring a small saucepan of water to the boil. Halve the spring onions and cut each piece lengthways into fine shreds. Cook in the boiling water for 2min to soften. Drain and dry on kitchen paper. Bundle up shreds of onion and place on top of the scallops. Push wooden cocktail sticks right through the spring onions and scallops to hold them together.

3 Mix the chilli sauce with the coriander. Cook the scallops in the oven for 10min. Transfer to a serving plate and spoon a little sauce on each one to serve.

3 Bake the scones for

Scotch quail’s eggs

4 To serve, halve and butter the scones. Flake the ham hock (if not already done) and pile on to the scones. Spoon a little chutney over the top of each one.

1 Put the quail’s eggs in

INGREDIENTS ● 12 large scallops ● Vegetable oil for brushing ● 4 spring onions ● 4tbsp sweet chilli sauce ● 3tbsp fresh coriander, chopped

to a floured surface and roll out until 2cm thick. Stamp out rounds using a 4.5cm round cutter and space them slightly apart on the baking sheet. Re-roll the trimmings to make more.

flour. In a bowl, mix the sausagemeat with the fennel, cumin, chilli, parsley and a little seasoning until combined. Divide the sausagemeat mixture into 12 equal portions.

3 Take a piece of sausagemeat and flatten it out with your fingers to about 5mm thickness. Wrap around an egg, pinching the edges of the sausagemeat together so the egg is completely enclosed. Repeat with the remainder.

4 Lightly dust with flour, then coat in beaten egg and breadcrumbs. Heat a 5cm depth of oil in a large, deep flying pan until a piece of bread turns golden in 1min. Lower several eggs into the pan and fry for 4-5min until pale golden. If the breadcrumbs brown quickly, lower the heat so they don’t overcook.

5 Drain on a kitchen-paper lined plate while you cook the rest in batches. Cut in half to serve.

Takes 25min Makes 12 INGREDIENTS ● 12 quail’s eggs ● plain flour, for dusting ● 400g sausagemeat ● 1tsp fennel seeds, lightly crushed ● ½tsp cumin seeds, lightly crushed ● 1 medium strength red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped ● 3tbsp JANUARY 2019

IDEAL HOME PARTNERSHIP

ART FOR YOUR HOME Meet Astrid Vos, a fashion illustrator showcasing her work as part of the Runway Gallery With a background as an illustrator in trend forecasting, Astrid Vos began posting her fashion drawings and portraits on Instagram in 2016 and captivated top designers and industry creatives. Now in demand as the world’s go-to artist for capturing backstage looks at global fashion events, her lively model sketches sit alongside her private portrait portfolio. We caught up with Astrid to discover what inspires her.

Q

What’s your art background? I studied drawing at the Fashion Academy in Arnhem, then for 13 years I worked in Paris for a top global trend-forecasting agency. After this I settled in Amsterdam where I drew for various advertising companies before launching work on Instagram. The Lovemy Afair

Green Eyes & Pink Thoughts by Astrid Vos

Q

What inspires you and how important are trends to you? The energy of fashion. Fashion is not superficial, it is like art, it reflects our progress and our evolution. Trends are enormously important for me because they reflect the pulse of our society and are constantly evolving.

by Louise Dear

Q

How do you describe your style? A bit edgy and dangerous. I like to challenge the viewer; there are lots of layers and depth to my portraits to reflect the personalities I am trying to capture.

Q

What’s your creative process? First I need to be intrigued, and then it becomes very simple. I use gouache, watercolour and chalk and focus on colour, line and texture.

Q

Any words of advice for people who want to buy art? Buy it because your heart wants it, NOT as an investment. Art should make your soul happy – so if you spot something you like, trust your instinct.

Q

Who is your favourite artist? Without question, Rothko – his paintings have so much depth and his work always speaks to me.

To view and buy artworks, visit runway-gallery.com (@runwaygallery) and book Soho Salon Supper Club tickets at designmynight.com.

AN EASY WAY TO DISCOVER ART To buy original prints and artworks from contemporary artists look no further than the new online Runway Gallery. This digital gallery curated by artist SYRETT showcases 14 celebrated artists, who exhibit internationally, including Astrid Vos, Bruce Atherton, Louise Dear, Dara Vandor and SYRETT. Prints start from £200 for limited edition prints. Artist SYRETT also runs the Soho Salon Supper Club – where you can talk to artists and view their work. Tickets cost £45 and include a cocktail, life drawing class and three-course dinner at Soho’s Scarlett Green restaurant.

BEAUTIFUL POSSIBILITIES

Give it some glow

Green fingers not required… Using a trough planter, position large pillar candles, equally spaced, across the bottom of the pot and fill around them with either sand, gravel or soil to keep the candles in place. Top with moss or additional greenery, such as ivy or even succulents for a more decorative display. BUY THE KEY PIECES For a similar planter, try Zinc edge silver trough planter, L40cm, £9.99, Primrose; Fenomen pillar candles, 99p each, Ikea; green reindeer moss, £2, Hobbycraft
