Azza Refaat ABOUT ME I’m 44 and I live in a rented three-bedroom villa in Dubai with my husband Moataz, 44, and our daughter Farida, who’s 16. WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNT? I used to be like a kid in a sweet shop when I went home shopping, but I’ve learnt to be patient, stick to my mood board, and wait to find the right pieces.
ABOUT ME I’m 34 and I live in a 400-year-old, seven-bed manor in Yorkshire with my husband Chris, 34, and daughter Maggie, four. WHAT’S YOUR BEST STYLE TIP? Stick to what you like. It’s fun to keep up with trends, but in the end, it’s your home and you have to live with it, so choose pieces and colours that make you happy.
Emma Lass

ABOUT ME I’m 36 and I live in a topfloor river-view flat in east London with my husband Ashley, 36, and daughters Elsie, five, and Alice, one. WHAT’S YOUR LATEST PROJECT? When we moved in, the walls were varnished plaster, and it felt like we were living in a pub. We’ve just finished painting them, which has made a huge difference.
Lauren Seager
ABOUT ME I’m 26 and I live in a two-bedroom flat in south London with my boyfriend Theo, 26. I’m an award-winning blogger at topologyinteriors.com. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM? My bedroom, as the view from the window overlooks our garden, and behind that a conservation area, which is rare in central London.
Stacy Mastroianni
ABOUT ME I’m 56 and I live in an extended three-bedroom semi in Milton Keynes with my husband Kevin, 54, and daughter Amelia, 28. WHAT ARE YOUR MONEY-SAVING TIPS? Do as much yourself as you can – YouTube has great tutorials. Upcycle and re-use pieces whenever possible. Lastly, make a note of what you absolutely need, and stick to it.
SHOW IT OFF! Proud of your latest project? Whether it’s a whole-house redo or just an Instagram-worthy shelfie, we want to see it! Email us at styleathome@ti-media.com with some photos and your hard work could be featured in a future issue.

ABOUT ME I’m 35 and I live in a detached bungalow in Derby with my husband Anthony, 45, and sons Luca, 10, and Enzo, seven. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR DECORATING IDEAS? From magazines and social media, plus recently completing my diploma in professional interior design showed me great places to find inspiration.

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m more than ready to crash into the Christmas holiday! No matter how organised I think we are, there’s always something to sort out at the last minute. Last year, I found myself baking the littlest Richmond’s birthday cake on Christmas Eve (she was born on the Big Day…), frantically piping icing at 1am. But, I don’t care how stressy the run-up is as long as I get the chance to indulge in my favourite, most selfish (and, er, slightly embarrassing) Christmas tradition – hunkering down on the sofa with a box of Hotel Chocolat and a G&T to watch old episodes of Miss Marple (Joan Hickson, obvs). I know – rock ’n’ roll! Whatever your Christmas quirks, I hope you get plenty of time to enjoy yours this year – and this fabulously festive issue, of course!

SHELF LIFE ‘I found the farmhouse-style shelf for £8 in a secondhand shop and painted it to match my scheme’
COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Millie Masterton and I live here with my children Felicity and Rupert. MY HOME A three-bedroom townhouse in Tunbridge Wells, which I bought in 2010. WHEN I BOUGHT IT It looked like something out of the Nineties TV show Changing Rooms. AND NOW I’ve converted the loft, added an extension and updated the decor throughout. STYLE TIP For a timeless look, pick a pale palette, but add in some decadent, ornate details.

COUNTRY LOOK’ HEARTH AND HOME ‘The wood burner, which was already here when I bought the house, adds country-style cosiness to this room’
IDEA TO STEAL ‘Hang a wreath above the fireplace to create a festive focal point’
Confronted with a Nineties nightmare in her period home, Millie turned back time with a paredback country look
B
efore I’d even set foot in this house, I knew it was the one I wanted to live in,’ says Millie Masterton of her Victorian townhouse in Tunbridge Wells. ‘Fortunately, the interior lived up to the exterior, with its original features, light-filled rooms and the fact that it didn’t need much work. I liked that it was habitable as it was so we could move straight in, although it definitely wasn’t decorated to my taste. At the time, we were living in southeast London, but I didn’t want my children, Felicity and Rupert, to grow up in the city. Instead, I wanted a lively town within a short commute of London. But despite searching most of Surrey, I’d drawn a blank. Then, while visiting my best friend in Tunbridge Wells, I realised the town ticked all my boxes – it was exactly what I had been looking for.
Creating calm The previous owner had painted most of the rooms in a bland magnolia shade, but with garish feature walls, like a chimney breast painted a bold blood red. The main bedroom and hall had to be re-plastered, as the walls were in very poor condition, and had been painted so many times that when I stripped the wallpaper off, the plaster came with it. To achieve a uniform look throughout the house, I chose a palette of grey and off-white to create the backdrop for the simple country look I wanted.
Adding personal taste Next I wanted to tackle the kitchen – and fast! It‘d been decorated with Nineties yellow melamine units and chequerboard-effect yellow and turquoise wall tiles. It was also practically unusable. One worktop was at an angle, while the oven was stacked on the other worktop, leaving nowhere to prepare food. So I

got the cupboards replaced first, fitting the oven into a run of base units. Then a wall was moved so we could straighten the worktop, and an ugly plaster feature on the chimney breast was ripped off. The doorway to the utility was moved over by a brick’s width, and the washing machine moved to the kitchen so I could fill the utility with floor-to-ceiling cupboards. Lack of storage was an issue throughout the entire house, so I created built-in units in most of the rooms – adding a bench seat in the hall, plus extra cupboards and shelves in the sitting room and Rupert’s bedroom. Whenever I buy furniture, I make sure to find a piece that incorporates some kind of storage. Quite often I’ll pick up something second-hand from a car-boot sale, and then

The last major work I completed was converting the loft into an office for myself. As I work from home one day a week, I needed somewhere quiet, as well as space to store the sewing materials for my business, Ruby & Custard. There was a hatch into the loft above the stairs but it was so tricky getting anything up there, so I couldn’t actually use it as storage,

But there were cupboards backing on to each other in both bedrooms on the second floor, so I took out one set and ran a staircase up to the loft from there. I then had Velux windows fitted and turned the space into a studio. It’s my retreat where I can get creative and keep all my bits and bobs out of reach of the children. I combined the loft conversion with other jobs to make good use of the scaffolding and, after a chance conversation with both my neighbours, the scaffolding ended up stretching across all three of our houses so they could also fix a leaking chimney and add a rear extension. This meant I gained the space for a tiny en-suite off the main bedroom, too, which I wouldn’t have

MY HOME An end-of-terrace in Wellingborough, Northants, which we bought in 2009. WHEN I MOVED IN The house had beautiful original features but every room needed redecorating and modernising. We also had to improve the insulation throughout. AND NOW We’ve put our stamp on the house and it’s bursting with colour and personality! H
aving my heart set on a period property meant our house hunt was very focused when we were searching back in 2009,’ says Becky. ‘That, plus the fact that we wanted to live close to the railway station in Wellingborough, meant we only viewed two properties – one new build on a housing estate and this one, which was brimming with potential. My husband John commutes into London every day and we both have family and friends in and around the area, so the location of the house ticked all our boxes. Being set back from a main road means it’s in a peaceful position, yet still very well connected to transport, as well as being around the corner from a park and local schools. For us it offers the best of both worlds – it’s close to the city and has the countryside on its doorstep.
Getting the basics right It was the feeling of space that really captivated me when we looked around this property and I instantly started imagining what we could do with each room. But as with a lot of older houses, some parts were dated and needed replacing. So once we’d moved in, we tackled these more pressing issues first. The single-glazed sash windows had to be refitted with panes of double-glazed glass, as they would build up ice inside during the winter. We also spent some of our budget adding thick insulation to all of the externally facing walls upstairs, which has made a huge difference and was definitely money well spent.
Moving on up Five years after moving in, we decided to extend into the loft to future-proof the house and make sure we’d have room to grow over the coming years. The

project ran smoothly and the space is large enough to fit in a guest bed as well as a small office area, which I can run my business from. We installed a bespoke aluminium-framed window to let plenty of light into the loft space, which, after lots of research, I sourced for just £500 compared to quotes coming in at near £2,000. We also ripped out and redesigned the bathroom on the first floor as it felt dated. In the sitting room, I couldn’t wait to rip up the dingy brown carpet. I’d always hoped for parquet flooring and managed to source some reclaimed from an old school on eBay.
Paint instead of replace More recently, we have given the kitchen a makeover as the existing cream
cupboards just didn’t fit in with our colourful style. Conscious of budget, we decided to have the cabinets painted rather than replaced, as the layout already suited our needs and the units were in good condition. A local tradesman carried out the work and I replaced the door knobs with brass cup handles. I really wanted marble or quartz worktops but they were too pricey, so I chose marbleeffect laminate worktops instead, which my Dad kindly fitted for us to help keep costs down. I’m thrilled with the result – no one can believe it’s the same kitchen!

period features into each room, while adding a contemporary twist. I would describe my style as quite maximalist and eclectic and I love mixing old and new to create unique looks and combinations. My love of colour certainly shines through all over the house, but particularly in the living room where I based the scheme on two fabulous Swoon sofas, which I picked up for a bargain price at a local outlet – the orange and the blue sparked lots of ideas for decorating this space.
Festive traditions Being in this beautiful house at Christmas is quite magical and I love its traditional feel at this time of year. The woodburners make the living and dining rooms feel very cosy and we always choose a tall tree to make the most of having such high ceilings! We often host Christmas day here and John takes the lead on the cooking front, making Christmas dinner for the whole family. I tend to decorate with lots of colour and each year I treat myself to a few additional baubles to add to the tree and build up the collection. Making the run up to Christmas special for Lola is very important to me as well and she has her own pink tree in her bedroom, which she decorates however she fancies each year. COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Martyna Janczynska, 27 (@janki.home), and I live with my husband Lukasz, 33, and our children Amelia, eight, Stanis, five, and Pola, two. MY HOME A rented three-bedroom Seventies end-of-terrace house in Middlesbrough. We moved here in August 2013. WHEN I MOVED IN It was bright, airy and had lots of potential, but it felt daunting that every room needed a lot of work. AND NOW We’ve laid new flooring, painted or wallpapered every wall, and decorated each room using a palette of whites, greys and black. A TINY BUDGET’ LOFTY IDEAS ‘I wanted to create a feeling of loft living in this room, by combining boho, rustic, industrial and Scandi elements, pulled together with a cohesive colour scheme’

hen we moved to the UK from Poland in September 2011, we initially rented a flat from a private landlord,’ says Martyna. ‘But after a couple of years, we were given a rental property through Thirteen Group, a local organisation that offers good-quality housing for people in need, with a view to renting, shared ownership and even the possibility of buying, which is a dream for me and my husband Lukasz. When we first moved into this house, it was in a complete state. But it had a lot of space, large rooms and a bright, airy hall, and I just loved the feel of it right from the very first viewing.

IDEA TO STEAL ‘Use an L-shaped sofa to zone the sitting area in an open-plan space’
Thirteen Group gave us a £170 voucher to go towards decorating, but that only covered some of the cost of laying two carpets. Luckily, over the previous few years, we’d saved up so that we could afford to decorate when we found the right place. When we received the keys, we had two weeks before we needed to move, so my husband and brother-in-law spent the time making the place habitable by laying flooring and making the walls look decent. The house really needed replastering throughout, but we couldn’t justify the cost, and I’d already seen a gorgeous grey-and-white brick wallpaper on eBay that I loved. So we papered over the worst walls, and then painted the rest in either white or Shadow Grey by Dulux. Thankfully, we were able to move in on time and, to make our funds stretch, we spent a lot of time doing the rest of the work ourselves in the evenings and on weekends, and trying to make accessories ourselves rather than buy them. I always knew that a grey, black and white palette would reign in my

I bought the grey sofa second hand and Lukasz made the coffee table from some spare wooden pallets, which I finished off with castors and a lick of white paint. Then came the fun bit – accessorising the rooms. I was inspired by Instagram and Pinterest to warm up the interior using wood, warm textures and fluffy textiles.

For a double-height table, use strong wood glue to stack the two pallets after painting, securing with clamps until dry. Once completely dry, turn over and screw in some sturdy wheeled castors in each corner.

POWDER PINK ‘I love adding a bit of colour to this room by changing the bedding – it’s an ideal quick fix as I can’t stick with one style for too long’
BRIGHT START ‘The light and spacious hall was one of the first things that attracted me to our home’
‘STICK TO THE SAME COLOUR PALETTE THROUGHOUT YOUR HOUSE TO GIVE IT A SENSE OF COHESION AND FLOW’ one point I did feel like the renovation would never end, especially as I was also trying to manage small children and a cat! At the time, it felt like the longest few weeks of my life but I knew it was worth persevering, and once the problems with the room were sorted, I started to enjoy the decorating side of things. We couldn’t afford to change the wall tiles, so I refreshed them by using tile stickers. I got them for around £30 from eBay, and the effect is fantastic. Even when you look closely, you can’t tell that the tiles aren’t real. Then I painted the wall at the end of the room with blackboard

paint and added a few wooden accents, plus black-and-white kitchenware and tea towels, which really complement the finished room.
Bathroom basics It took me a while to fall in love with our bathroom. It’s very small, and there was nothing I could do to change that, so I decided to give it new life by using accessories. I bought a couple of plants and some monochrome towels, and Lukasz cut up some timbers that he’d found. Then using wood glue, he turned them into a gorgeous wooden bath

IDEA TO STEAL ‘Choose wall lights as a space-saving option for bedside lighting’
Do it! HANGING SEAT If you’re not experienced with DIY, this is a job best left to a pro. Hang the chair where it won’t get in the way or bang into walls, about 90-110cm from the floor. Suspend the chair from a beam or ceiling joist that can support the weight of both the chair and the person sitting in it (at least 140kg). You’ll need a specialist screw-in hook for the ceiling, plus a length of heavy-duty chain or rope to hang the chair from, as well as strong connecting S hooks.

Future ambitions Although we’re so proud of the work we’ve done to this house on such a small budget, there is still a lot that we’d like to do. I’d love a new floor in the kitchen, and in the longer term, I’d like to rearrange the space so that all three of our children can have a bedroom of their own. I’d also like to do some work on the outside of the property and make the garden look beautiful. I’m so lucky to have a husband who perfectly understands the look I want to achieve with our furniture and accessories, and then has the talent to turn them into reality. And although we do all the work ourselves, and often joke that we live on a construction site, we will happily take our time and make sure we are happy with the finished result – although I’m not sure there is ever such a thing as a “finished” home!’

Deck the halls
Create a festive wall hanging in place of a wreath. Cut a piece of dark fabric, loop 3cm at the top over a long wooden batten and sew into place. Use chalk to softly sketch a design, then use white fabric paint, to paint over your design.
Celebrate in style
Side-step the shop-bought paper and make your own instead. All you need is a roll of parcel paper, string, some fun stamps and ink pads in festive shades. Simply cut the paper to the size you need, then get stamping. It doesn’t need to be perfect – that’s all part of the handmade charm.
Ditch your grubby doormat for a festive version. Buy a cheap coir mat, cut star, snowflake or letter stencils out of paper, and use spray paint to design your own wintry one.
Don’t have space for a full-sized traditional tree? Make your own scaleddown version using a large vase and some small branches from the garden, so you can still show off your best baubles.

SWEET SCHEME
COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Lisa Bunton, 36, content manager for rockmystyle. co.uk, and I live here with my partner Richard Mees, 35, and our two children Lyra, four, and Jenson, one. We live in a four-bedroom new-build home in Solihull, which we bought in 2014. MY CHALLENGE Turning our bland study-guest bedroom into a Scandi-inspired nursery for our baby son Jenson that would work well for him now when he’s little, and later as he grows up. MY WISH LIST I wanted a neutral scheme that would blend with the rest of my home scheme, a feature wall and fun accessories to make the space exciting for a little one.
80 | JANUARY 2019
‘I chose the Sunshine cotbed because of its simple, classic and timeless design,’ says Lisa. ‘It’s also great because it converts to a toddler bed which will be handy when Jenson gets older’

O
ur old study-guest room worked fine but it wasn’t very attractive,’ says Lisa. ‘However, when my partner Richard and I found out that our second child was on the way, it gave us a deadline to turn this uninspiring room into a beautiful nursery. Nurseries are my favourite room to decorate, as I’m a big kid at heart. You can afford to go a bit crazy and whimsical with the finishing touches. I love Scandi style, and use a lot of whites, greys and natural accents in my home. I knew a neutral palette would work just as well in a nursery, as it’s so adaptable and will suit any age. Also, white walls are better for patching up crayon and finger marks left by our daughter Lyra, now four.

I was torn between creating a feature wall and just painting all the walls grey. Eventually we went for an animal-themed wallpaper to go on the wall behind the cot. I applied it myself while eight months pregnant, with Rich’s help. It was hard work, but I was too impatient to wait! We fell in love with a beautiful cot and decided to splash out on a matching wardrobe. Once I’d finished the walls and added the furniture, I could then get on with the best bit – accessorising. Initially, I incorporated navy accents, but as the room is west-facing, I found that they seemed to suck the light out of the space. Instead, I stuck to brighter tones. I made a hanger for an animal alphabet chart, and also made pom-poms to pretty up the toy baskets. I’ve used pretty, practical storage so plastic toys can be put away.
Creating character As the room was so empty of personality I wanted to find a way to catch the eye as you walk in. That’s how I ended up creating the white shelving unit,

‘CREATE SOFTNESS USING MATERIALS LIKE WOOL AND WICKER BASKETS,AND ADD COLOUR WITH BOOKS AND PRINTS’ which is made up of simple matt white shelves and oak-effect wood brackets. I’ve displayed an assortment of fun accessories in various shapes and sizes. The crayons were a cheap but effective way to add a splash of colour and complement the Noah’s Ark and animal prints. Rich and I spent a year travelling around the world before we started a family, so we had to find a way incorporate a globe into the nursery.

82 | JANUARY 2019
The project took around two months in total, and the room was all ready for our son Jenson when he arrived in April 2017. I wanted to create a cosy, characterful and practical space for him to play in during the day and snuggle up in at night. The fact that I often find Lyra in here curled up in the chair with a book, or playing with his toys suggests I’ve achieved just what I wanted. I’m particularly proud of the colour scheme I’ve used – grey, white and oak, with splashes of colour and a sprinkling of gold. It’s such a tranquil, calming space and should last our family for many years.’

‘We swapped BEDDED IN ‘We set a plank of reclaimed wood above the brand new range to give the impression it had been there for years’
COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Bron Armor, 53, a PR at Good With Words, and I live with my husband Ges, 60, a publican, and my two sons, Toby, 22, and, Rhys, 18, in a four-bed Victorian terrace in South Wales. THE CHALLENGE Creating a brand new kitchen in what was previously the dining room, as well as finding the space to install a range cooker.
ECLECTIC STYLE
MY WISHLIST That range cooker was top of my list! Plus some plain grey units with an open-plan feel and plenty of copper and metallic highlights, as well as a few touches of my favourite colour, pink.

Instead of knocking down walls, Bron reconfigured the downstairs layout, repurposing rooms to create her dream kitchen
W
hen Ges and I got married five years ago, we decided to rent his house out and live in mine,’ says Bron. ‘It’s a nice, solid house, but it had got tired. We needed to go through it and work out what we wanted to do. We left the kitchen and dining room until last as they were a bit of a mess. The kitchen was tiny and right at the back of the house, while the dining room was huge with an old wooden table I love and have had for years, but to be honest, it wasn’t used every day. Then there was a space in between the dining room and living room that had been a playroom for the boys when they were young. It was a layout I’d inherited when I moved in, but now we had the opportunity to change it.
Making plans Ges is incredibly handy and also good at seeing what will work, and I love choosing the colours and picking furnishings. But we had to really think how we could make some radical changes on a budget. We decided the best way to update the kitchen, without needing any structural work, was to swap the rooms around. The old kitchen would become a utility room, the dining room would become the new kitchen, and the playroom would become the new dining room. Once we’d agreed that I immediately felt so much better.
Next steps Then, we moved the dining table and got rid of any appliances that didn’t work, so we had a clearer starting point. The old units were fine for the utility room, which is tucked out of sight anyway. We chose to leave the washing machine and fridge freezer in there to cut down on what had to go in the new kitchen, but move

Lighting can work both ways – try adding contemporary polished metallics to a period room or a vintage-style chandelier to a more modern space. I love to mix and match old and new for an eclectic look, so we already had some nice old pieces for the new kitchen. The key was excavating the chimney breast so we could put in a range cooker.
A stroke of luck We’d chosen the black range cooker from DeLonghi and some plain grey kitchen units to tone in, when we got lucky. My brother Hew was replacing his kitchen and asked us if we’d like the black granite from his old kitchen. All we had to do was get a van to collect it. It was really nice quality and we paid someone to recut
and polish it, which cost £900, but even so it was a bargain. It came with a built-in sink and Ges fitted the units himself.
Adding metallic touches The tiled floor didn’t need replacing, which was another expense saved. But I was determined to introduce some metallic highlights to the scheme. I chose copper handles for the grey units, and I also found some great copper cutlery, lanterns, racks, utensils and pans, too!
Bringing the colour I love colour, particularly pinks, which go so well with grey and copper. I painted

RANGE COOKERS
Bron’s choice...
A RANGE COOKER
Make this country classic work for you, without blowing the budget
What is a range cooker? There are two types. The first is a traditional heat-storage model made of cast iron with an enamel finish (think Aga and Rayburn) that can also heat your hot water system and radiators. The other is more contemporary, and resembles professional kitchen equipment, with a multipurpose hob, powerful burners, and add-ons like griddles or hot plates.
Don’t they cost a fortune? There’s no two ways about it – these cookers aren’t cheap, with top-of-therange models costing thousands. But you can pick up an entry-level range from £600, and a mid-market model from £1,000 to £2,000, while higher-end
BEST FOR… AFFORDABLE MODELS Co-Op Electrical has a wealth of dualfuel ranges for less than £600, with one single-cavity model going for £349.
SALE OPTIONS Currys offers range cookers from across the market, often with money off, half-price installation and free delivery.
SPREADING PAYMENT Appliances Direct gives you the option to splash out on a top model, paying the cost off each month, meaning you could pick up a seriously stylish Falcon 90cm dual-fuel model for £82 a month.
cookers start at £2,500. In general, though, for a perfectly serviceable, good-quality range, you shouldn’t have to spend more than £1,000.
Will I need lots of space? Not necessarily – range cookers come in standard widths, from mini ranges of 60cm, up to 150cm whoppers, and come with between four and eight hob burners, two ovens, a grill, and a warming drawer. Mini ranges are essentially a standard 60cm freestanding cooker styled to look like a range, and will generally have two ovens, a grill, and a four-burner hob. A popular size is 90cm, which will easily cope with everyday cooking.
What fuel do I go for? There are four types. Gas ranges, with gas ovens and hobs, are the cheapest to run. Dual-fuel, with gas hobs and electric ovens, is the most popular type. Electric ranges have electric burners and ovens and, in most cases, a fan oven. Lastly, electric induction ranges offer quicker, more efficient heating than ceramic hobs. Overall, the cheapest option is to stick to the fuel type your current cooker runs on.

Are they hard to care for? Most ranges have a hard-wearing enamel finish that’s easy to clean. More affordable models with a normal finish can be cleaned with a standard oven cleaner. Some ranges have catalytic liners that cause the oven to self-clean at high temperatures, and top-of-the-market models feature a pyrolitic cleaning system.

‘I’ve given it the IDEA TO STEAL ‘ This gold artwork of a lion adds a regal feel to the room’ BRIGHT IDEA ‘Raising the ceiling height has made the walk-in shower feel more spacious’
COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Jessica Stephens, 35, and I live in a one-bedroom flat in a Regency building in Brighton, which I bought in 2013. MY CHALLENGE My bathroom had been made by taking space from the sitting room, so it was a tiny, windowless room. It was bland, with an awful lino floor, and had no personality or imagination at all. MY WISH LIST I wanted to make the room feel larger without having to do any major building work. I was keen to have a separate walk-in shower and bath. I also knew I wanted to add glamour with touches of gold, but I knew I’d have to be careful not to overdo it.

GOLDEN TOUCH’ Rather than play it safe, Jessica luxed up her characterless, compact bathroom with a bit of sparkle
B
uying an ex-rental property was my chance to work with a bathroom that was a blank canvas, but lacked personality,’ says Jessica, of the Regency-era flat she owns. ‘It was just a basic suite, with magnoliapainted walls, and a cheap lino floor that was ill fitting as well as difficult to keep clean. It lacked a window, as the room had been created in the first place by borrowing space from the sitting room. I wanted my new bathroom to look bigger, but without having to do any major structural work.
My must-haves At the top of my wish list was a separate shower and bath. The main challenge was how to work these two large items into a small space because the central position of the doorway meant the room lacked spare wall space for additional sanitaryware. A low-profile walk-in shower was nonnegotiable, and I also wanted to install an enclosed shower screen, because the bathroom could feel chilly in the winter. Another must-have for me was a freestanding roll-top bath. The issue was trying to find one that wouldn’t look overpowering in a compact room. I was aware that all the bathroom furniture had to work without appearing crammed in, and it took a lot of careful planning. But I eventually sketched out a floor plan that fitted in everything I wanted.

I was advised to make the stud walls thinner, as well as removing the false ceiling to raise the height of the room, and these simple tweaks made the room feel so much bigger. Moving the door to the far side of the room gave me enough space to squeeze in a shower unit. Underfloor heating ensured the oncechilly room felt cosy, and continuing the floor tiles at a slight angle towards the waste unit dispensed with the need for

a shower tray. The work took three months to complete, and as this is my only bathroom, the toilet had to be re-plumbed every evening, and I joined a local gym so I could shower! Inspiration for the gold taps and tile detailing came from a stay in a funky London hotel. I saw the gold metro tiles in the bar area and thought they’d look amazing in my bathroom. Chris Burton from The Brighton Bathroom Company advised me to keep the rest of the design simple, though, to avoid it looking like Liberace’s bathroom! The gold metro tiles were off the shelf, but I had some items coated in a gold finish to match.

I had to stick rigidly to the concept to get the result I was after. On some occasions, it meant being extra fussy about details, and being prepared to wait to make sure things were perfect. But the bathroom company were incredibly patient with me and it’s all paid off beautifully in the shape of this gorgeous, glamorous bathroom.’

SPACE-SAVING BATH
Jessica’s choice…
Jessica’s bath fits neatly in the small space
A COMPACT BATHTUB
Make the most of a small bathroom by choosing a stylish space-saving tub
What is a compact bath? The current standard bath size in the UK measures 170cm long by 70cm wide. Anything smaller is classified as compact or space-saving. Popular compact dimensions include 150x75cm and 160x70cm. Smaller still is the hip bath, sometimes called a shower-bath, which starts at 105cm long and are designed for sitting under a shower but can be useful for bathing children.
Why should I get one? Obviously, they are aimed at bathrooms that simply cannot squeeze in a standard tub, but compact baths are not just for seriously small rooms. Reducing your bath’s length by just 10cm can make a big impact on your bathroom’s layout for
BEST FOR… TOP-NOTCH ADVICE The award-winning design team at Ripples are totally clued up when it comes to making every inch of space in your bathroom count.
SHOWERING TOO Wider at one end to provide plenty of elbow room when showering, a compact shower-bath is the ultimate space-saver – try Better Bathrooms and Drench.
A DEEP SOAK By substituting depth for length, Cabuchon’s luxury deep-soaking baths save space and use much less water, without leaving you chilly.
example. Going small-scale with your tub could also allow a more spacious shower or double basin unit.
Are they comfortable? If you’re very tall, you may need to bend your knees higher than usual, but compact baths are designed to suit adult use. Always choose the shape based on comfort, and do a dry-test, fully-clothed, in a showroom if possible. Aim for a good width at shoulder-level so you can sink down and keep your torso warm. Some people actually prefer to sit in a bath with their elbows resting on the rim, rather than recline, particularly if they like to read in the bath.
COMPACT BATHS
What styles are there? Compact baths come in the same shapes as their full-size counterparts and can look just as stylish. Models that fit flush to the wall, or tight into the corner, will of course take up less floor space but you can also buy mini-me versions of designer freestanding baths that are great for creating impact. A classic roll-top or slipper design is perfect for period or country homes.
PERFECT CURVES Freedom bath right hand, L150xW90cm, £249, Bathstore
How much do they cost? They usually cost a little less than standard baths with the price depending largely on material type. Acrylic is the cheapest option, then enamelled steel, followed by composite and cast iron. Don’t forget to add bath panels to your budget if they are not included.

Amorina electric fire, from £460, Elgin & Hall
Elgin & Hall has launched a range of electric fireplaces suitable for DIY installation – all you need is a flat wall with a socket nearby. The fireplaces arrive in either one or two pieces (where the fire and surround are separate) and the first step is to measure to decide the best position. Use a drill and wall plugs to secure the fireplace to the wall, fit the surround, then plug it in. If your plug is a distance from the surround, choose a timber surround to make it easy to cut a notch for the cable.

Mark out the star shape on the reverse of different coloured sheets of glitter card using the template. Draw the same number of stars onto black card and cut all of them out, using scissors. Using metallic pens, draw an outline on the black star shapes and write food names or little messages in the centre. Lay a glitter star face down on your worksurface and cover the back with PVA glue. Position a cocktail stick in the centre, then lay a black star face up on top, sandwiching the stick. Leave to dry, before poking into tasty cupcakes or canapés.
