NOVEMBER IS A BIT OF A LIMBO MONTH. The weather’s getting warmer, but summer’s not quite here yet, and the holidays are almost within reach! I like to make the most of this time and plan for the silly season to come. I’m not suggesting that you crack out the Chrissie decorations just yet, but start thinking about how you’ll entertain now that end-of-year get-togethers are on the horizon. When I think of entertaining, I see beautifully set tables laden with food and wine, surrounded by people laughing, trading stories and creating memories. And that’s what we tried to capture this issue, with the table decor shopping feature (p78), DIY grazing platters (p148), and our cover story on p14 about displaying all your favourite pieces together (it’s an excellent conversation-starter when you have people over). We’ve also tapped into an Italian theme this month – I mean, who does a long lunch better than those living on the Med? I noticed this trend emerging a few months ago when I started seeing Amalﬁ Coast-style lemon prints everywhere – on fashion accessories, book covers, people’s Instagram pics (#eurosummer) – and now this Italian vibe has made it into interiors. So we’ve brought the trend to life and used it as our inspiration for an exciting project we’re doing in collaboration with The Daily Edited (hint: you can visit it!). Turn to p38 to read all about it. So now that the days are longer, how will you get into the entertaining spirit? Might I suggest you begin by preparing yourself a drink and a mini grazing platter and ﬂipping through your fave magazine. Let’s get this party started!

Take stock before you style Pull accessories off the cramped shelf they’ve been sitting on for years and rediscover the long-lost items that have been hiding in the back of your cupboard. For instance, those plates you collected while on holiday, the candlesticks you only use on special occasions and the books that you’ve never opened.

Any surface will do You can arrange a beautiful display on almost any ﬂat surface you have available. Consoles and coffee and side tables are obvious choices, but think about other underused spots like a wide windowsill, mantelpiece, bathroom vanity or even the kitchen bench. A tray on an occasional chair or ottoman works well, too.

Follow the rule of three When grouping accessories, create visual cohesion by following the rule of three – or ﬁve or seven. Odd numbers appeal more to the eye and look effortless. Symmetry is another helpful tool to keep in mind when grouping items. A set of matching artworks or a pair of candle holders placed side by side look resolved.

Play with height and shape Consider the height and shape of your items, and arrange accordingly. Combine tall and short, skinny and plump pieces in the same grouping to create visual interest. Here, a lamp, decorative magnifying glass and book stack form a triangle at differing heights. So too do a vase, bottle and tray, left.

Make a statement! Every vignette or styled collection of items should feature a statement piece, big or small, to anchor the look and demand attention. This could be something you already have, like a sculptural vase ﬁlled with fresh ﬂowers or fruit, a vintage bust or a standout stool or side table that you can set your things on top of. A

dolce vita A paragon of European style, Positano is home to an A-list hotel that’s inspiring summer fashion, fragrances, interiors and Instagram hashtags

POSITANO IS THE APEROL SPRITZ OF ITALY. Nestled into the Amalfi Coast, the cliffside village looks like a postcard. The sea is cerulean blue, the rooftops are a dappled shade of sunburnt skin and visitors on Vespas dress like extras in The Talented Mr. Ripley. Perched high above Positano you’ll find its crown jewel, Le Sirenuse, a family-run resort where Hollywood’s creme de la creme brush shoulders at the bar. Le Sirenuse was originally a private summer house owned by the Sersale family. In 1951, they turned their home into a luxury hotel boasting vaulted ceilings, embroidered linen bedding and a collection of museum-worthy antiques and art. The hotel is now managed by Antonio Sersale, the son of co-founder Franco. His wife Carla designs womenswear for the hotel boutique, Emporio Sirenuse, his cousin Marina develops the hotel’s line of Eau d’Italie fragrances, and they also tend to the gardens of bougainvillea and lemon trees. In 1953, the author John Steinbeck wrote, “Nearly always when you find a place as beautiful as Positano your impulse is to conceal it.” Not Le Sirenuse. The scent of those lemon trees is bottled in Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino fragrances, while the hotel’s whitewashed walls and tiled mosaics are inspiring the design of new restaurants and bars. Positano’s picturesque architecture and landscape is also fuelling the latest homewares trends, like citrus motifs on toasters and ceramics painted with faces of Mediterranean gods. Your Instagram feed is probably full of Le Sirenuse-inspired photos, and we think it will be for summers to come. R

In 2014, Cire Trudon and designer Giambattista Valli created a candle with notes of gardenia, jasmine and lily to capture the scents of Positano.

Dolce and Gabbana’s Spring ’16 #Italiaislove collection was inspired by the Amalﬁ Coast, as were the interiors for Da Maria, a new restaurant in Bali owned by Maurice Terzini.

2018

This year, artist Luke Edward Hall designed homewares for Emporio Sirenuse, while Aussie designer Lucy Folk’s jewellery is reminiscent of the hotel’s artworks.

renaissance woman Sara Ricciardi, the 29-year-old Italian designer behind one of Milan Design Week’s most talked-about artworks, invites us inside her studio and home

Power of one Having grown up in the south of Italy, Sara’s career choice of design was almost unheard of. “My parents still don’t get what I create, but they support me,” she smiles.

“I WAS SUPPOSED TO STUDY ECONOMICS,” Sara Ricciardi recalls. “I didn’t know what design was. Then a man gave a talk at my school about university and he described how our ideas can become reality. In that moment I knew that was my path.” Despite her parents’ concerns, Sara did not pursue economics. Instead, she studied product design in Milan, then completed two exchange programs – “In Istanbul, I discovered the power of decoration and social engagement; in New York I learned the importance of failure and dealing with mistakes.” After graduating, Sara took up freelance work and teaching social design courses at universities. She also creates objects and furniture with Italian artisans and designs for a number of brands. “I create things with strong visual impact, that revolutionise traditional uses,” she says. Sara works from her studio in the south of Milan, where she can identify with the city’s Italian culture and international spirit. “Little by little I’ve created my world. I don’t share the space – I’m already enough for it!” Every morning begins with her ritual. She stretches, prepares coffee, burns an incense stick and makes hand scrub from the leftover grounds. “Right now, I’m in a storm, researching, experimenting and trying not to fall,” she explains. “But if it’s not a challenge, you’re in your comfort zone.” As her star rises, galleries are taking notice. Recently, curator Alice Stori Liechtenstein approached her to recreate the Schloss Hollenegg castle in Austria for the Milan Salone del Mobile. Sara created Arcadia, an installation where visitors are free to play in a mythical land. “With Arcadia, I started to deﬁne the direction I want to take. That’s why I will present my ﬁrst interior this year!” Sara’s energy may seem preternatural, but she simply says, “Life is too short to be mediocre.” A real living

Creative space “My studio is 75 sq m of chaos and materials,” she says. Sara always works with paper and coloured pencils, and she designed the cabinets – they’re from her I F.lli Lamière range.

10 questions with Sara Ricciardi 1. When do you feel most creative? Early morning, when the sun is rising and the city is quiet. 2. What music do you listen to? Classical when I wake up, techno when I exercise, in the studio it could be Brazilian or African rhythm and aterwards I put on awful ’80s dance music. 3. What materials do you like working with? I really love metal. It’s straight and rigid but bends gently under a lame. I’m also enjoying ceramics and more organic materials. 4. Do you have a favourite collection? Could you choose which child is your favourite? 5. What trait do you most admire in others? Their obsessions – when they focus on something and do it with all their passion and have a ire inside that drives them. 6. How do you like to relax? Drawing without any reason, walking with no destination, losing myself in the city and riding my bike and singing loudly at the same time. 7. What’s your drink of choice? Give me a bottle of red Italian wine called Amarone, which is like drinking silk. Paired with candles and Billie Holiday, and I’m in heaven. 8. Where would you like to travel? Mexico, to investigate their death festivals and rituals. 9. Beauty or innovation? Why choose one? Beautiful innovation! That’s the real goal. 10. Where would you like to be in ive years? I live in the present so intensely that I don’t make many plans. But I want to keep studying a lot, and I’ll try to be more politically involved. Classic simplicity reigns in this polished Sydney apartment full of heritage character

In the white “We just love the simplicity of white linen against washed-out timber ﬂoors,” says homeowner Kate Bucceri. The walls throughout have been painted Dulux Lexicon Quarter. Club Med Italian ceramics from a recent trip to Sicily are dotted throughout the apartment – a nice nod to Jon’s Italian heritage. The head vase (opposite) is by ceramicist Giacomo Alessi. A

WHEN YOU WORK IN A FAST-PACED, DEMANDING JOB, your home becomes your sanctuary. This is something Kate and Jon Bucceri can certainly attest to. By day, they wheel and deal in their respective careers as a PR manager and investment banker, then at night they retreat to their Federation-style apartment in Sydney’s Darling Point, with its calming, pared back aesthetic. They bought the original 1920s property with its high ceilings, generously sized rooms and old-style architecture in 2015. “There’s so much character in our apartment that you just can’t get in a newer style,” Kate says. “And we love the area with its parks and incredible city views.” THREE BECOMES TWO While the property was touted as a threebedder, Kate and Jon decided to sacrifice the pokier third room by knocking out a wall and adding to the kitchen and dining space. “The only issue was that this was one of the main load-bearing walls in the apartment block, so the process wasn’t easy!” Kate recalls. The building’s heritage listing delayed things further, but 13 months later, construction of the new structural beam and surrounding bulkhead began. “The room has the most incredible light thanks to its floor-toceiling windows, so we’re so glad we persevered,” Kate says. GREAT MINDS Kate and Jon have taken a collective approach to their home’s interiors. “Luckily we have a very similar style,” Kate says. “I tend to lead the conversation, but Jon always helps make the final decisions.” Washed-out timber floors and walls painted a cool white act as a base to which they’ve added soft linen furniture, patterned rugs, marble tables and brushed-metal lamps. Careful consideration has been given to the artworks, too. “I feel art can’t be rushed,” Kate says. “It’s best to have nothing on your walls rather than something that doesn’t feel authentically you.” As a result, each of the chosen scenic photographs, abstract prints, original oil paintings and Italian ceramics tell a story that is unique to this home and to this couple. Windows of opportunity The bank of windows in the front living room were a major drawcard for Jon and Kate. OPEN A grand old building with room to spare is restored and turned into an artist’s residence with the heart and soul of a share house

Pare it back “To counteract the overwhelming architecture, I went for contemporary and sober touches,” says homeowner Martino. The shared living room is furnished with a coffee table from Nome Furniture, a Ferm Living rug and a vintage leather chair. The artwork is by Lorenzo Brinatia, a former resident.

IN THE AGE OF AIRBNB, it’s totally normal to talk to strangers on the internet, show up at their house and spend a few weeks living there. Of course, most people prefer to keep their homes – and wiﬁ passwords – private. But for Martino di Napoli Rampolla, home is a place to be shared. After working abroad, Martino returned to Florence and felt the city lacked a supportive space for creatives. The solution was this historic home owned by his family, which he describes as an “architectural jewel that needed to be ﬁxed up”. CREATIVE COMMUNITY Martino enlisted interior designer Andrew Trotter to turn the empty building into “Numeroventi”, an artist’s residence and gallery with rooms for rent. They did it in 18 months. “I met Andrew at a concert held in his apartment,” Martino recalls. “The idea of a place dedicated to creative exchange stems from his open-house philosophy.” Martino wanted tenants to feel at home, so Andrew designed spaces where young people could unwind. They also chose unfussy Scandinavian-designed furniture to create a relaxed vibe. The high ceilings made it possible to build mezzanines in several rooms, however, no other major changes were made. WORK IN PROGRESS As Numeroventi grows, Martino plans to renovate more spaces that will accommodate guests who come from around the world. He also plans to do up his private living quarters. “There is an entire community revolving around Numeroventi, a mix of local and international creative talent,” he says. “I admit, its success exceeded expectation. We hit the nail on the head!” R

Keep it simple In share house living rooms, mixing furniture from several design decades can feel stuffy, so Andrew looked for pieces from the ’50s and ’60s. “He helped me ﬁnd furniture in Italy, Spain, Portugal and England,” Martino says. IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, where would that be? For seasoned traveller Héloïse Brion, who’s spent time in Paris, Florida, Madrid, Mumbai, Marrakesh and Normandy, the alluring sights and sounds of Paris are hard to beat. The apartment that she shares with her husband Christophe and their two children Gabin and Balthazar is located in the 10th arrondissement, within walking distance of produce markets, traditional bakeries, pavement cafes, chic eateries and cocktail bars – all essential, given she runs a successful food blog and subscription box business, Miss Maggie’s Kitchen. QUIET SPACE Despite its central location, the apartment is protected from the frenzies of city life thanks to its position at the rear of the building. Overlooking two large courtyards, the family hear bird calls and distant church bells in the mornings, and enjoy the generous sunlight that streams in all day long. Graced with high ceilings, hardwood floors, leadlight windows and marble fireplaces, the property had been renovated not long before they moved in, so the only additions needed were some custom-made bookshelves in the dining area and a more substantial wardrobe space in the master bedroom. PASSION PLAY Around the home you’ll find a diverse mix of pieces that reflect the passions and hobbies of its inhabitants. Héloïse likes to display special items collected over the years, like the woman’s portrait that she spied while in Kerala, India, and then saw again a few months later – she was so fascinated by the painting that Christophe surprised her with it for her birthday. Christophe’s guitars and piano provide further insight into the couple who live here. And then there’s the kitchen and dining area, Héloïse’s realm where she cooks and bakes for her business. Her love of food is contagious, and her boys love to help in the kitchen whenever they get the chance. We can almost smell their sweet creations from here… R Details, details The living room, with its Paola Navone couch, flows into the dining area. A mirror found at a Parisian street market leans nonchalantly against the wall, while the red, wooden cow head was a gift from Héloïse’s brother and a world globe depicts some inspiring words to live by. bring new life to antique features If you’ve been blessed with an older home that has gorgeous period features, it’s easy to make them work in the 21st century. Freshen up an old fireplace with a simple coat of paint – white is crisp and clean, but any colour works – or modernise decorative ceiling mouldings with a contemporary light fitting. Look at me! The couple have made the ﬁreplace a focal point of their living space, dotting treasured trinkets along its mantel and leaning framed pictures and an antique moulding against the walls on either side.

Create cute vignettes Apply the concept of an art wall to your bookcase. Use the shelf borders as a frame and make space for small curated groups of items. Layer them from back to front to create dimension, starting with tall prints and photos, then candles, single stem vessels and mementos for a personal touch. Group by tone, not colour Arranging your belongings by colour can start to resemble a rainbow. If you have more than one bookcase, decorate some with warm hues and others with cool shades. Balance bright pieces by inserting a neutral sculpture or book spine in between. Repurpose a ladder If you don’t have much built-in room, secondhand timber ladders make low-cost bookshelves when propped up against a wall and look great with a fresh coat of paint. mustard hues Warm and subtle, mustard is the unsung hero of the colour wheel. Here’s how to use it with conidence The vibe Just like its fellow yellows, mustard is a cheery shade, bringing a level of depth and sophistication that you don’t get with pale lemons or bright buttercup hues. “It’s a positive colour full of energy, and very welcoming,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, colour and communications manager for Dulux. The top spot So where in your home will mustard work best? “This shade is so inviting when used in a hallway or entry,” Andrea says. Thanks to its superb light reflectance, it also looks amazing on dining and lounge room walls as an alternative to white (see right), while Andrea recommends using it in an office or study to help get those creative juices flowing. Can’t commit to a full wall? A sunny mustard-coloured front door makes a great first impression. Best colour matches Mustard does not discriminate and can be paired with

most other shades. how to create a fruity centrepiece

Search your home for vessels that will hold fruit. These can include shallow bowls, vases, baskets or even quirky ﬁnds like this giant shell, or a small piece of hollowed-out log.

Scour your fridge, fruit bowl, local greengrocer or supermarket for fruit. (Turn to p122 for our tips on pairing fruits.)

Lay your tablecloth, if you’re using one, then position your largest vessel in the centre of the table.

If you’re displaying a mix of fruits in one vessel, place the largest pieces in ﬁrst. Fill the gaps with the remaining fruit, from largest to smallest, and have a bunch of grapes or a few cherries spilling over the edges. A

If you’re working with a single type of fruit, also known as displaying en masse, ﬁll the vessel to the brim. Balance the ﬁnal pieces of fruit on top, making sure they’re secure enough so that they won’t roll away!

Once your main vessel of fruit is in position, bring in three extra bowls of fruit to place around the central display. This is so you can “spread” your arrangement along the table. These extra bowls don’t have to match – mix it up for a relaxed look.

To complete your centrepiece, include a wild card. It might be an ornament, a vase of ﬂowers or candlestick – anything fun that will work with your look. It’ll make an extra talking point at the table, too.

Finish setting your table with glasses, napkins, plates, cutlery, votives… then sit back and await your guests’ happy reactions!

DISPLAY TIPS

Make sure that your vessels are in proportion to the size of your table. Nothing looks stingier than just one tiny bowl on a large table.

To create height in your arrangement, you can use plinths (little stands). These don’t have to be actual columns (who has those lying around?!). Instead, try using cake stands, upside-down bowls or tumblers, candle holders and stacks of books to display fruit on. To get more surface area, you can Blu-Tack a small dish or saucer on top of the upsidedown bowl to create a mini cake stand.

Fruit that’s in season is the most affordable, so buy lots!

meet the architects Anita Panov and Andrew Scott from architecture irm Panovscott were tasked with adding a mindful extension to this federation-era cottage. Panovscott.com.au | @panovscott

TO TELL THE FULL STORY OF THE “JAC” HOUSE, you need to go back to a time when the house itself didn’t exist. Long before it became home to a federation-era, four-room cottage, the site in an inner western suburb of Sydney belonged to the Gelding Brothers Victorian Nursery, and during this time, a young jacaranda tree was planted. Fastforward 117 years to the redeveloped block with its compact cottage, and it was this tree that inspired the home’s magical transformation. Anita Panov and Andrew Scott from Panovscott Architects were engaged by the homeowners to design an extension that would give them greater access to the environment around them, allowing them to enjoy the changing seasons and landscaped gardens to full effect. “We spoke about the things we normally would in a ﬁrst meeting as we walked around the house,” Andrew recalls. “We then arrived at the back door, and there before us was the most astounding jacaranda tree we had ever seen in an urban context.” Then and there, he and Anita decided to approach the project as if they were working between two existing structures – the cottage itself and the grand old jac. Retaining many of the home’s original features, they added a modern stacked extension to the rear, with a band of concrete marking the transition between the two. Several glass windows, huge in scale, were incorporated to allow natural light to ﬂood in while providing a delightful view of the 12-metre tall tree.

Rise and shine The upstairs rooms – accessed by a narrow blackbutt timber staircase, as demonstrated by the architects’ son – are a private oasis, ﬁlled with ample daylight. @reallivingmag

Built in 1917, the cottage was in great condition. As such, the front rooms remain untouched, with the ornamental ceilings, picture rails and exposed pine ﬂoors preserved. Then, as you walk down the hallway towards the new extension, a band of polished concrete leads to the open-plan living/kitchen/ dining space with its garden views. “This moment is designed to be jawdropping, a dynamic spatial moment which celebrates the experience of homecoming,” Andrew says.

With the “outward-looking” brief well and truly met, the clients also requested some “inward looking” capabilities. “We talked a lot about how the transformed house would need to be generous enough to allow them to be at one moment comfortably alone, and at others, able to host large gatherings of friends, which they clearly enjoyed,” Anita tells. The solution? A series of doors that slide into concealed wall pockets so the homeowners can open up or close off rooms as they choose.

Of course, a modern transformation of a historic home requires a degree of sustainability and environmental awareness. Panovscott retained and reused bricks and pine ﬂoorboards from the cottage in the new courtyard wall and hall extension respectively, while energy-efﬁcient hydronic heating lies within the concrete slab. Ventilation hatches in the upper level’s glass panels are another natural heating/cooling feature, allowing hot air to escape while drawing cool air from below. R real living

How did you and Hazel meet? I was buying pet food for our guinea pig Ciccia and saw Hazel, a fluffy little thing. I bought her, and forgot to buy the food (Ciccia was not pleased)! When I brought Hazel home, my husband asked, “What are we going to do with a rabbit? You cook rabbits!” What is she like around your children? She’s so mellow with our daughter Luna. She sleeps under her cot, and Luna’s first word was Hazel. But she can be quite naughty with the boys. When they play with Lego, she’ll grab pieces and hop away. How do you and Hazel bond? I get a bit of anxiety and she’s had such a beautiful, calming effect on me. When I hold her I can feel her heartbeat, her slow breathing and the deep relaxation. It’s meditative and beneficial to both of us. I think if you deal with any anxiety, loving a pet can help you manage it. Is Hazel high maintenance? Once they’re litter-trained, rabbits are easy to care for in terms of walking and cleaning, but they are emotionally high maintenance because they need a lot of TLC. Is she a foodie like you? Hazel is like Garfield the cat and tries to steal our food, especially pizza and bread. She’s not meant to eat it! Hazel magically appears in the kitchen when we open the fridge or when I’ve been baking for my new cookbook Love Laugh Bake!, hoping for a nibble or two. If she were to inspire a new cookbook, what would it be? A book of pet treats like seed mix and dried vegetables. I would put Ciccia and Hazel on the cover! R real living

semolina gnocchetti, braised cuttleish & pangrattato Serves 2 Prep time + cooking time 2.5 hrs GNOCCHETTI 200ml water 120g unsalted butter 150g semolina ﬂour 4 eggs 20g Parmigiano Reggiano, grated 1 tsp salt PANGRATTATO 1 loaf stale sourdough bread 1 clove garlic, minced 3 tbsp dried oregano 2 tbsp olive oil

Preheat oven to 180°C. Remove heads from cuttlefish and set aside. Clean bodies and remove internal organs, taking care not to puncture ink sacs. 2 Remove beaks from heads and discard. Roast heads for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. 3 Bring a large pot of water to boil and add roasted heads, onion, fresh oregano and peppercorns. Simmer for 30 minutes, remove from heat and strain into a clean container to make a stock. 4 Meanwhile, cut the cuttlefish bodies into 5mm cubes. 5 For gnocchetti, bring water to the boil in a pot with butter and salt. Add semolina flour and stir with a wooden spoon until mix starts to thicken and turn glossy. Remove from heat and add eggs one at a time while stirring. This can be done in a stand mixer with a paddle attachment. When mix reaches room temperature, stir in parmesan. Once fully incorporated, transfer the mixture to a piping bag with a medium round tip. 6 To make pangrattato, cut bread in small pieces and toss with garlic and olive oil. Toast in the oven at 180°C for 15 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Blitz the bread in a food processor or smash with a knife on a chopping board. Season with salt and dried oregano and set aside. 7 Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Meanwhile, heat 1 cup cuttlefish stock in a pan. Simmer and reduce for a few minutes, then add butter and diced cuttlefish and cook for 30 seconds. Remove from heat. 8 Position pastry bag over water and pipe in gnocchetti mix, cutting it into 2cm pieces. Gnocchetti is cooked when it floats to the surface, after 1–2 minutes. 9 Drain quickly then add to the pan with cuttlefish, and give it a good shake over a strong flame to emulsify the sauce and coat gnocchetti thoroughly. Add lemon juice to taste, transfer to plates and add a generous sprinkle of pangrattato. Serve immediately. Note: Excess cuttlefish stock can be stored in a fridge or freezer for future use. R 1

FOR DECADES, THE WORDS “SLEEPY BEACH TOWN” have been invariably linked with the NSW coastal hub of Shoal Bay. And while the “beach town” tag will thankfully always stick, a recent refurbishment of the iconic Shoal Bay Country Club has seen an influx of city dwellers flocking to the Bay for a relaxing getaway with all the trimmings. The locals love it too – open all day and much of the night, this waterfront venue is home to multiple bars and eateries, a large outdoor courtyard, a stage for live music and a quiet lounge area. Start your day at Mermaids Cafe for a healthy breakfast of Smashed Avocado, Bircher Muesli or the slightly-less-healthy-buttotally-worth-it Signature Waffles. Upstairs, The Kitchen & Patio has lunch and dinner covered, serving burgers, woodfired pizzas, share platters (the Deluxe Seafood Platter is a game-changer) and cocktails by the jug. With bellies full, you can sit back and take in your surrounds. Rachel Luchetti from interior design firm Luchetti Krelle was tasked with the job of creating an inviting and playful space for all of the SBCC’s patrons – young and old. Drawing inspiration from the venue’s vibrant beach culture and history, she mixed design elements from the ’50s with coastal details and a fun palette of gelato shades to create a magical sense of nostalgia. Of course, a beach getaway shouldn’t be spent entirely indoors, and Shoal Bay has plenty of activities to lure you outside. Work off that pizza with a hike up to Tomaree Head Summit, take a guided quad bike tour of the nearby sand dunes or sail off into the sunset aboard a luxury yacht captained by Blue Water Sailing (oysters and bubbly included). Where to stay The Ramada Resort sits alongside the Shoal Bay Country Club and offers studios and one-, two- and threebedroom apartments, some with spas and water views. Prices start at around $155 per night for a standard studio. How to get there Shoal Bay is a 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney, or 30 minutes from Newcastle airport. What to do there Make the most of your beachside location by hitting the water. Kayaks, boats and stand-up paddle boards are all available for hire, and you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to guided snorkelling, ﬁshing and dolphin-watching tours.
