Coach of the Year

Leadership

Hannah Ziesemer completed her third year of teaching in 2019. Hannah teaches first grade at Brookfield Elementary and is admired by parents and colleagues for her strength in teaching and ability to reach all students. Last spring, Hannah was recognized for her work and received the Engaged in Excellence Award for Excellence in Teaching by a New Educator.

Dan Wandrey began teaching Business and Coaching Girls Basketball at Brookfield Central in 1998. In 2014, he transitioned to the Boys Basketball team and, in 2019, he led them to their first ever WIAA state championship with a record of 23-5. In September, the National Federation of High Schools named Wandrey the 2019 Wisconsin Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.

Matt Schroeder began his Elmbrook career as a Spanish Teacher at Pilgrim Park in 1998. He transitioned to Brookfield East in 2000 and served in various teacher leadership roles until he became Brookfield Central’s Associate Principal in 2015. Matt’s administrative journey continued in 2019 when he was named Principal of Wisconsin Hills Middle School.

• E lmbrook Schools and WCTC partnered to offer professional development courses to several support staff members. • Principals Dan Westfahl and Kori Hartman led a cohort of 12 teachers through a program with Carroll University to obtain their Reading 316 License.

Recognition The 4th Annual Engaged in Excellence Awards recognized 17 individuals for their impact on our students and schools.

Community Service

• S taff members donated over 550 purses and bags filled with health essentials and supplies to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission for its 5,000 Purses Project.

Dr. Rae McClain, Psychologist at Dixon, received Carroll University’s Early Career Leader Award.

Health & Wellness

• E lmbrook employees have taken ownership of their healthcare spending through benefits education and participation at the Family Wellness Center. As a result, the District has been able to expand benefit offerings while reducing overall healthcare expenses four consecutive years.

Herb Kohl Recipient

Presidential Scholar Brookfield East graduate and Valedictorian, Namitha Alexander, was named one of five 2019 Presidential Scholars for the state of Wisconsin. Namitha was also a 2018 State Champion in Forensics and Debate, and the featured student speaker at Elmbrook’s 2018 All-Staff Kickoff. Today, Namitha is pursuing a degree at Stanford University.

Brookfield Central graduate and Valedictorian, Katherine Liu, was one of three Elmbrook students to receive a Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship for her academic achievements which included 30 Honors and AP courses. Today, Katherine is pursuing a degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Wisconsin Innovation Award

Twenty-seven teams of students competed to provide Milwaukee Tool with creative ideas about how to solve company-wide challenges. The competition culminated with the top-10 teams presenting to senior management who recognized the three best ideas.

Elmbrook’s LAUNCH program won the 2018 Wisconsin Innovation Award in Education. In just its 3rd year, LAUNCH has pushed the boundaries of education as it connects area businesses and organizations with student teams in a content-focused (strand), collaborative, project-based learning experience.

Design + Create = Fab Lab The Brookfield Central Fabrication Lab opened its doors on October 15, 2018, and offers a prototyping environment that allows students to create, design, and produce solutions to problems or challenges using state-of-the-art equipment like 3D printers, a video production studio, and CNC routers.

Brookfield Central graduate Jake Somlai (220 lb weight bracket) won the school’s first-ever Wrestling state championship with a perfect 48-0 season.

Brookfield East student Reilly Tiltmann, was crowned a two-time WIAA State Champion in the 100 Meter Butterfly & Backstroke and was named the Journal Sentinel Girls Swimming Athlete of the Year.

Brookfield East graduate Braden Rumpit won the Division 1 State Championship in the 1 Meter Diving competition with a final score of 486.55.

SMART Libraries

Pilgrim Park and Wisconsin Hills Middle School libraries were redesigned in 2019 to become the first smart libraries in the state of Wisconsin. Thanks to technology from Scanalytics, the library is able to track visitor rates, furniture usage, and student engagement with digital content!

Nature Center Upgrade

The Elmbrook Education Foundation raised $76,675 in support of the Elmbrook Nature Center. Located on Brookfield East’s campus, the Nature Center provides KG-8th grade students an oasis for scientific investigation, hands-on learning, and environmental awareness.

District Office

Construction has begun on a 15,000 square foot District Office on the Fairview South Campus. This follows the sale of the current facility (old Brookside Elementary) in 2017, which was three times the size needed and in need of significant repairs.
