SILVER LINING: WE ALL LEARN

Anchor’s Aweigh The Unspeakable Sailing By Elmer John E. Basa

Row, row, row your boat Gently down the stream, Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily Life is but a dream. Do you remember this classic children’s song during your kindergarten days with matching hand actions with your teacher, singing it together with your classmates ludicrously? Admit it. But this nursery song is probably one of the deepest songs in history of songs. Yes, the structure of the song is simple yet it is filled with symbolisms of life. A deep metaphorical meaning of a song “Row, Row, Row your Boat” that tells you that you are going to row your own boat which means connotatively ‘your life’ – the body that you have, use and take control of it and you may start rowing your life because nobody else will row for you.

S t u d i e s , grades, peers and family issues are some of the everyday struggles of a student. Nobody said it was easy to be one. A lot of things bring us up, some usually bring us down and since the world is such an imperfect place, we can’t really tell it things will go our way. Many of these said struggles sometimes prevent a student to go to school and be properly educated. Young as one is, he or she is filled to the brim with curiosity. In today’s generation, a person’s willingness to learn brings them to new places. This may affect the future in various ways. G r a d e s and studies are really important. They play vital roles in a student’s life and one’s future depends on them. They

You are the Captain of your ship.

There are people that will guide you, show you techniques on how to row but you have to get the paddles and start rowing your own boat. Don’t worry on someone else’s boat, you can be part of their journey but they too also have to row their own boats.

“Gently down the stream” The water may sometimes have hazardous wave currents towards you but the song says, gently. Row your boat gently, not vehemently against the water currents because when you go against the reality of life, you lose, instead, go with the flow with the currents gently as you sail life with your stream of consciousness. “Merrily, Merrily, Merrily, Merrily, life is but a dream.” As you sail on your boat, don’t row your paddles seriously or struggling because the number one cause of death is stress. Since stress denotes how our minds interpret what’s happening around us. Scientists prove that anxiety and excitement have no difference as it depends on how your brain

measure an individual’s intelligence and his or her capability to survive in the world of work as he or she grows up. Once a student is pressured in regards to academics, he or she develops anxiety and oftentimes let him or her down, which results to low grades and failing marks. “When one gets a bad report card, his parents come to his thoughts. What would they think and say? Would they get angry? Constant pressure from family members affects a student badly.” Peer pressure, as we all know it, is a universal problem. Cultural differences and opposing opinions among peers conclude to arguments and bullying. Lowering one’s self esteem, humiliating him or her in public are forms of bullying. Bad

influences from friends push students to do bad things like using drugs, for example. High school of course, is a period for the sense of belonging and fitting in. And yet, everyone has the capability to learn from their mistakes. As students, we are still young and we have role models to tell us what’s right from what’s wrong. Life isn’t perfect, but that doesn’t mean that nothing good will happen to a student. Achievements, good friends, and even young love positively mold a learner. One just has to weave his faith with good influences and open mindedness. Indeed, being a high school student isn’t easy, but who says it isn’t fun?

interprets it.

According to William Shakespeare, tragedy is a comedy, misunderstood. Everything in our journey is hinged on our interpretations. Be optimistic. Take it easy.

Harvard researcher Shawn Acre says that 75% of successes and victories are predicted by different optimism levels as we are not only physically optimistic just to recover illnesses but to live longer because “life is but a dream”. And we are talking about inception. But wait, are we dreaming? Are we all dreaming? As we go to sleep tonight, our ideas, passion will effortlessly disappear and will be replaced by others. Even the ancient sages say that everything is a dream, a passing dream and it is your duty to wake up to the truth that you are powerful to choose to see life in every morning when you wake up…you can say, Good morning, great God.

AFFINITY

Dalawang Mukha ng Teknolohiya sa mga Kabataan

HOME RUN

“Don’t throw your shot away.” By Denise Aira G. de la Fuente

“How exactly do we avoid giving up on our dreams, even if things don’t go our way?”

“If you’re tired of Starting over, STOP GIVING UP” – Shia LaBeouf We all have dreams in life. Some of us want to be engineers, scientists, doctors, or artists of all sorts. Some aspire to compete in the Olympics, while others aim to start their own businesses in the near future. Planning to achieve our life goals seem easy, but in the later process, it wouldn’t seem so simple especially when a whole bunch of daily struggles are handed down to us

“How exactly

do we avoid giving up on our dreams, even if things don’t go our way?” As High School students, a lot is to be expected from us. We should already have our goals planned out so that it won’t be much of a hassle when we reach College and when we step into adulthood, but get this: the real world won’t always be in our favor. In some days, things are okay. Otherwise, things get out

of hand. We just have to do our part and adjust.

Observing our surroundings is a start. Whatever happens, we should be able to adopt with the changes that occur. We should be able to compose ourselves in case things would go wrong, and we’d always get up after we feel down. Mistakes happen and it’s okay to try and fight again.

Always put in mind that we are the ones that control our fate, and that there are no magical shortcuts that will help us if you want to be able to help your family and have a bright future, being determined, diligent, and faithful makes a huge difference. Even if we’re just mere students, learning and embracing independence is an important thing to do. Being independent shows that even without help, we are still able to do well on our own. This commonly applies in the world of work when we grow up. We cannot avoid problems regarding things like studies, social life, and family. Self-conflicts also come to the picture. But even if a massive horde of challenges come on our way, we mustn’t forget what God has in store for us. We have the greatest chances to make our future a whole lot better than what we expected, and that will only happens if we have faith. If we believe, we’ll achieve. Don’t give up and strive for the best.

PAGLALAYAG

METAMORPHOSIS

Disiplina. Ito ang tatak ng VMA By Wayne G. Cabasag

K to 12 curriculum speaks for Development

“Every development requires learning from every circumstances along the way but we barely need a beacon of light to guide and enlighten us in every path we take.”

By Ruleen L. Guillen

“Be a student as long as you still have something to learn and this will mean all your life”, this was a great reminder from Henry L. Doherty. This quotation wants to instill to us that this world is a fascinating place with infinite things to learn from, so grab every opportunity to learn something new and apply every knowledge in your daily lives.

Every development requires learning from every circumstances along the way but we barely need a beacon of light to guide and enlighten us in every path we take.

Success and development won’t be complete without somebody who has a pursuing hand to kick off the rags and turn everything into something that is valuable. The knowledge and experience that is instilled to us by our teachers and the academe can mold us into a competitive and independent individual. Students were sent in school to

SOCIAL

learn and be educated in the field they are going to choose. The capacity and suitability of the school reflect to the students as a product of its vision and mission to become a globally competitive 21st century learners of K to 12 curriculum. The implementation of K to 12 curriculum can help us to deepen our knowledge and understanding about the course we wanted to take in college. We are trained to be more aware and to be more productive individual in our respective fields. VMA Global College is one of the institutions that offer bigger opportunities both local and international levels by having senior high school inside the institution. With their high standard facilities, VMA is capable of giving high class education that help students to be more competent in their skills. Therefore, K to 12 curriculum opens a room for improvement by giving high quality education that will foster the skills for mastery of concept under this curriculum. We should be in one hand to support this in shaping ideas and knowledge and creating a well developed citizens of this country.

Feature

DR. JUANERO: A VETERAN HERO By Kyla Venice F. Agustin

“I live as a person and a child of God. Everything comes from God and God is the source of everything.” Quoted by the most important person here at VMA for she believes that we are not here in Earth if not for God, even our life comes from Him. Seeing her every day, roaming around the campus, visiting classrooms and sharing a smile to everyone gives us privilege to see how passionate she was towards her profession. True, that being a teacher is not a pieceof-cake as an occupation. Wide-eyes overnight in making lesson plans and teaching hard-headed, stubborn students in the morning till’ afternoon. How much more if handling not only those but the whole high school department both senior and junior high school without retreating nor surrendering? Hey, fellow students! Im talking about the famous doyen, Dr. Arsenia D. Juanero here! All of us know her as our beloved high school department principal. But beyond that extra ordinary profession lies an extraordinary life of an extraordinary person. Arsenia D Juanero, PhD, 72 years old, was a retired public school’s district supervisor. 44 years in government service and out of that was 26 years being a public school’s district supervisor. She is a Master of Arts in Education Major in Guidance and Counselling and Doctor of Philosophy in Education Major in Education Management. Magnificent, isn’t it? but behind her spectacular achievements, she also have encountered various obstacles like every one of us before she was able to reach her dreams. Dr. Juanero came from a poor family. “Poorest of the poor” according to her. But she is a living evidence of an old saying that “Poverty is not hindrance to a great success.” It never obstructs her to reach her trophy, instead, she made it her inspiration to pursue her dreams. One of those was to provide her family house and lot like many of us want to and to help others through service.

“I live as a person and a child of God. Everything comes from God and God is the source of everything.”

Aside from those, her first inspiration behind the vast development of her career was, God. Because according to her, God fulfilled His promises. What she is right now was one of His promises to her. So, she always return the glory to Him every time she has achievements. “My being”, she said, was one of the things she considered as achievements. Her being that was still in God at the age of 72, specifically. The personality she reaches the experiences she was wearing, the circumstances she have encountered and such. seeing right now, we owe it from them. “Persist until you succeed.” The motto she wanted to share with us, fellow students, VMA’ers, was one of the procedures to fulfill our goals, our ambitions. Hard work and faith were the keys to success, the tool for a blissful life. Life is somehow in the form of cruelty. But we look in other way, life will not be that cruel if we were only determined to face it with chin raised high. Like Thomas Henry Huxley said, “The great end of life is not knowledge but action,” still on the same path saying that we, students must not hinder any circumstances thrown by life, instead shield it with hard wrork, like what Dr. Juanero did, our veteran Hero.

Our Helm to our Voyage towards Success “Teachers themselves are a catalyst in our growth as an individual in society aimed to be as productive as we can be.”

By Jon Marc C. Torred

Teachers can come in many personifications as much as there are humans; even so their roles are the same, that is to educate, inspire and guide their students. Feeding their students with adequate knowledge they can even mold and most of all change the life of their students. After our parents, we first engage ourselves in Kindergarten then to Elementary followed by High School and even in College, teachers themselves are the catalysts in our growth as an individual in society aimed to be as productive as we can be. In the class, they show exemplary leadership skills, in the field of study they are so patient and tolerant albeit our shortcomings and will assist us along the way without any sign of resentment. In our moments of success, when we do great in our exams, they rejoice with us exhilaratingly. Will encourage us to cogitate and to feel so good about ourselves; edge us to envision there’s nothing impossible we cannot achieve in this world. They will call or visit our homes to ascertain the reason why we abstained school. That is the distinguishing marks of a true dedicated teacher.

Teachers in diverse ways have encouraged, motivated and sometimes even sponsored students to crawl to higher pedestals in their lives that the students themselves never thought was possible. There are some students,

in brief distress moments in their lives who would have stayed out of school if not for the insistence of the teachers. Those who had the privilege to be in the classes of these dedicated teachers know exactly what I’m talking about.

Having said that, I’m equally cognizant that there are few unscrupulous ones amongst them. The actions of those ones should not be used to punish the overwhelming dedicated patriotic teachers who have over the years sacrificed their lives to serve humanity and their country. In relation, we would like to welcome the new mentors of VMA Global College High School Department in giving their full efforts and time to mold the students into a perceptive, vigorous and risk taker individual in every circumstances that they might experience throughout their journey. WELCOME ABOARD TEACHERS!

Student’s Corner

Internal Conflict

Contributed by Carl Jorge M. Agustin “Youth is the hope of its motherland” is a famous quotation of Gat. Jose Rizal. Nowadays, students are facing many challenges in their young age such as financial problems, peer pressure, and vices. Equally important, how can these youths be the hope of this nation if they are facing different issues in their juvenile years?

First, students nowadays are facing financial problems. In addition, poverty is the root of this problem. With this, students can’t focus on their studies. Can my parents afford to give me allowance tomorrow? When can I pay my tuition fees? Do I have extra money for my project? And, Gosh! Tomorrow is the deadline. These are some of the questions and expressions that made students struggle in school. Second, peer pressure is one of the issues students are struggling in and outside the school. According to Population Commission (PopCom), almost 75 % of the population comes from teenage pregnancy. In relation, peer pressure is one of the causes of teenage pregnancy for teenagers since they are trying to be with the group. On the other hand, to be holistically healthy, you

must be physically, mentally, emotionally, morally, and socially healthy. Likewise, being socially healthy is the most important among the five aspects of being holistically healthy. In like manner, being with friends who can help you to be mature from this challenging world we are living in can be the most satisfying chapter in our life.

Lastly, vices are plague in teenage life. Smoking, drinking, engaging in pre-marital sex and the use of illegal drugs are just some of the examples of vices. The illness of society starts from being adolescent.

To conclude, according to Mr. Elmer John E. Basa, “Let us not allow the environment to change us, rather, let us change the environment.” We may be too young and fragile, trying to explore life and make possibilities but everything has its way. Similarly, we make mistakes but somehow that only testify that you have tried. You have that courage to face whatever the consequences of your chosen action. Yet, it’s normal but we must learn from it. Our experiences and exposure to life will be our tool to success. Nevertheless, we must bear in our mind that the past can teach us but will never rule.
