MAJOR Psychology

I came to college as an exercise science major, but then I realized that something like counseling would be more my speed. I love people, and I’m passionate about teaching young people how to handle adversity and how to grow. So I’m planning to be a high school social worker and coach. My social work minor and my experience on the football field have given me the skills to connect with students and build them into better athletes and better people.

AND JUSTICE FOR ALL As a minority, I grew up hearing all kinds of stories about housing discrimination. When you don’t know your legal rights, there’s not much you can do. That’s why I want to be a lawyer, and it’s why I signed up for a fair housing course at UIC John Marshall Law School through Elmhurst’s pre-law program. It was eye-opening to learn about the laws around housing discrimination. Now, I’m even more determined to go to law school and make a difference in the world.

BUSINESS PLAN Sondra Simpson is an experienced executive with a track record of growing multimillion-dollar businesses. At Elmhurst, she gets her students involved in real-world consulting projects for clients such as Brookfield Zoo and Microsoft Xbox.

“Elmhurst is a caring community. It’s a place where we all pull together to help our students become great scholars, great researchers, professionals, whole people and lifelong learners.”

SONDRA “SONI” SIMPSON, PH.D. Associate Professor, Business Administration Department of Business and Economics

MODERN PHYSICS Venkatesh Gopal has received funding from the National Science Foundation for his investigations into how animals sense the world through air and water currents. He regularly involves students in his research.

“When my students do research, they discover what they’re capable of. It’s as though they’re meeting themselves for the first time. I think that’s what I enjoy the most about teaching—seeing my students grow from the experiences they have here.” VENKATESH GOPAL, PH.D. Associate Professor of Physics and Chair Department of Physics

OUTSIDE ART Rafael Blanco is a muralist whose recent works include an 80-foot-high mural about diversity and inclusion for the University of Nevada, Reno. At Elmhurst, he teaches drawing, painting and art history.

“Painting murals has taught me that when we are too close to things, we lose perspective. It’s only when we get some distance that we are able to understand what’s happening.”

RAFAEL BLANCO, M.F.A. Assistant Professor, Art Department of Art

FRENCH CONNECTIONS Rebecca Monger leads study abroad courses in Morocco, Martinique and Paris. An expert on Francophone world studies, she researches postcolonial migration, particularly in North Africa.

“We have small classes in the French program, so we sit in a semicircle and have a lot of deep conversations. We’re able to build a strong sense of community despite great diversity in student personalities and backgrounds.”

REBECCA MONGER, PH.D. Associate Professor, French Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures

DRUM ROLL If you asked my mom, she’d say I’ve been drumming since before I was born. There’s something about sitting down with a group, calling a tune and just going with it. At Elmhurst I’ve met students and faculty who share that feeling, and I’m learning from some of the best musicians in Chicago. In my first year here, I was the drummer for Late Night Blues, our top vocal jazz ensemble. It was completely different from anything I’d done before, so I struggled with it at first. But I got a lot of support from the directors and the other musicians. They reminded me that it doesn’t matter where you start, it’s the journey that counts. I love being at a place where I can focus on what drives my passion. And where people encourage you and push you to be your best self.

The friends I made through that program are still my closest friends today, and now I’m a mentor for new students in the program. Even now, my past mentees always text me when they need something. It’s always really good to hear from them and to know that I’ve had an impact.

We hosted an Olympics event to raise money for Wounded Warrior, and we organized an online Call of Duty tournament that raised funds for a children’s hospital. I’ve had a passion for helping others ever since I started a service project to bring soccer gear to Guatemala to keep kids away from gangs and drugs. I’m grateful that the people I’ve met at Elmhurst share my commitment to giving back.

ENLIVEN A CLASSIC COLLEGE TOWN Just a few blocks from campus, downtown Elmhurst offers all the college-town amenities you could want—from coffee shops and restaurants to a bowling alley and a classic nine-screen theater where you can catch the latest movies. It’s a vibrant city center with a welcoming vibe.

Many of our students find internships with local organizations like the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry or the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. Others gain real-world experience through courses that partner with business owners to conduct market research, develop advertising campaigns and more.
