Transfer Guide

Welcome

Welcome to Elmhurst College! As a transfer student, your goals and expectations are diΩerent from those you had as a freshman. You’re more experienced now, ready to move toward the finish line of your college experience. At Elmhurst, you’ll find a new world of opportunity: programs that suit your specific needs, people with your best interests at heart, and a college with a growing reputation for excellence. For example, check out “America’s Best Colleges,” the study by U.S. News & World Report. Elmhurst ranks among the top schools in the region. Or pick up The Princeton Review: it calls Elmhurst “a small college with a big bang,” one that oΩers “an intimate academic experience” and “a surprisingly broad variety of solid academic departments.” On our campus, you’ll become part of an open, welcoming community that includes students from every ethnic, racial, and religious background and from many states and countries. You won’t feel like a newcomer for long. And you’ll get to know plenty of transfer students with experiences a lot like yours. One in three of our students come to us from another college or university. We understand your particular concerns and needs, and we’re deeply committed to your success. Our admission counselors are determined to get to know you as an individual, and to make the transfer process smooth sailing. We encourage you to schedule an appointment with a counselor to ask questions, evaluate your transcripts, and develop a clear roadmap toward your Elmhurst degree. We look forward to seeing you soon!

The Academic Essentials Policies for Transferring Academic Credit • Our general policy is to grant credit for any course from another college or university for which Elmhurst College oΩers an equivalent course, or for any course that is basic to a liberal arts curriculum. You must earn a grade of D or better to earn credit. • Coursework is evaluated on a course-by-course basis. • We also accept Advanced Placement, Military, and College Level Exam Program credits. • One full course credit is equal to four semester hours, or six quarter hours. A four-semester-hour course from another institution will transfer as a full course credit. A three-hour course will transfer as 0.75 course credit, and a five-hour course as 1.25 course credits. • If you are entering Elmhurst from a community college, you may transfer the equivalent of 16 course credits (64 semester hours or 96 quarter hours). You’ll complete at least 16 courses at Elmhurst. If you are entering Elmhurst from a four-year institution, you may transfer 24 course credits (96 semester hours). You will complete at least eight courses at Elmhurst. • If you have completed an A.A. or A.S. degree at a participating, accredited Illinois institution, you may use the coursework to fulfill most general education requirements for Elmhurst. For more information, please contact the O≈ce of Admission. • You will be required to complete at least half of your major courses at Elmhurst.

Graduation Requirements • To graduate from Elmhurst, you must complete a total of 32 course credits (128 semester hours). These course credits can be a combination of transfer credits and Elmhurst credits, and a combination of general education, major, and elective courses. • Of the 32 course credits, at least 10 must be at the 300/400 level. These cannot be completed at a community college.

Questions? For more information on transfer credit policies, please refer to the catalog or contact the O≈ce of Admission at (630) 617-3400.

My Elmhurst Experience

Eric Lutz As the editor of the newspaper at Elmhurst, I’ve gotten a lot of experience—not just covering big stories, but also managing writers, producing the paper and selling advertising. It’s great preparation for the future.

Julie Provenza I fell in love with Elmhurst the first day I visited. Everyone welcomed me and tried to make me feel at home. I was nervous about transferring, but everyone’s so friendly that it was an easy transition.

Anar Akhundov Elmhurst has a lot of programs that prepare you for a career. I have an internship now, and my professor has introduced me to CEOs of ad agencies and other people who can help me find a job after graduation.

Nicole Spizzirri I’ve dived into a lot of diΩerent areas at Elmhurst that I might not have explored at a bigger school. I’ve been on the mock trial team, I did student government, I’m an Alpha Phi, and I traveled to Turkey. It’s allowed me to make some great connections and to grow—both personally and professionally.

Cody Boals I felt very comfortable transferring to Elmhurst because the teachers and the other students were so welcoming. Then when I joined the baseball team, I found an instant group of friends— guys I hang out with all the time now. And being a team captain has helped me learn about leadership, teamwork and organizing my time.

My Elmhurst Experience

Chris Hernandez Transferring from a community college and commuting from home to a four-year school where you live on campus was a big transition. But the faculty at Elmhurst gave me a lot of guidance in choosing courses and getting involved, and it was easy to meet people and make friends through my major. There’s a sense of community here that’s really special.

Chrissy Stelter I’ve changed since I’ve been at Elmhurst. I’ve met a lot of people from diΩerent backgrounds and diΩerent religions, and it’s helped me become a more open and welcoming person.

Jacob Scott At Elmhurst it’s easy to get involved at a high level very quickly. My second semester here I was news editor for the newspaper. I also have an internship with the Niebuhr Center, and I’m a national fellow with the Interfaith Youth Core. Getting involved like this reminds me that regular people can make a diΩerence, both here on campus and in the world.

Sonia Pedapati Before coming here I spent two years at a big university, and I got sick of the big class sizes and the lack of personal interaction. Elmhurst is a good fit for me because the professors have o≈ce hours and they actually talk to you without having to look up your ID number. The community here is so close knit and intimate that the College seems like a second home.
