Travel Information Travel Dales All the advice you need for travelling around the Yorkshire Dales by public transport can be found on www.traveldales.org.uk
Driving Driving in the Dales is extremely popular and very accessible by car as the area is bordered by the A1/M to the East, the A66 in the North and the M6 to the West. The A65, A59, A629 and M62 and M65 connect the South. But remember that if you are unfamiliar with the roads it is more relaxing, enjoyable and environmentally friendly to use public transport. If you do decide to drive, remember the roads are bendy with high, dry stoned walls often making visibility poor. Around any corner, there may be a tractor, walkers, livestock, cyclists or even a deer running across the road – so take your time, drive slowly and plan ahead allowing plenty of time for your day out.

ubbed the Knightsbridge of the North, since Harvey Nichols opened its first regional store outside London in 1996, Leeds is a place that prides itself as being the fashion centre of the North. With over 4.3 million square feet of retail space including 5 shopping centres and the largest pedestrianised city centre in England, there is something for everyone, whether you are looking for that designer outfit or the best of the High Street you will find it in Leeds. contrast. The Main Street is a charming cobbled street with cafés and second hand book shops, vintage clothes and antiques. Opposite the Brontë Parsonage Museum is the Brontë Weaving Shed stocking a range of good quality clothing and gifts. Holmfirth is also a veritable feast of numerous arts and crafts shops, antique shops, bookshops and a beautiful small independent cinema and theatre - the Picturedrome. Note too the distinctive setted ginnels in Holmfirth alongside weavers' cottages. The oldest building in the town is thought to be the famous T'Owd Towser situated adjacent to the steep steps of the church. The building has seen many uses including as fire station, mortuary and town lock-up. For those who love art and architecture, Salts Mill at Saltaire is home to the David Hockney Gallery. Titus Salt created this model village for the workers in his factory, but today it is home to art and unusual gift shops, cafés and an exhibition telling the story of the creation of the industrial heritage and the part Saltaire played.

C
umbria offers the best in food and drink, with many goods being locally produced and holding deep roots in Lake District history. The Cumberland Coil
Cumberland Sausages consist of rough cut pork, spices, herbs and pepper and are known for their distinctive shape. The coil of sausage is sold by weight or length. One possibility for its shape is that it was introduced during the Elizabethan Reign by German miners working in the Lake District who wanted a reminder of the thick meaty sausages they were used to eating in Germany. Westmorland Damsons While Damsons originally came from the area around Damascus, the small, bluey-purple fruits have been grown in Westmorland since the early 1700s. Although Westmorland no longer exists, The Westmorland Damson is a tasty tribute to the historic county, which is now part of the much larger county of Cumbria. The fruit is a member of the plum family and its unique flavour is said to be a result
of cross pollination with wild sloes and also the favourable Cumbrian climate. The fruit is harvested in September and used to flavour wines, gin, pies, cheeses, chocolate, bread, jams and beer. Try Gingerbread in Grasmere... Created by Sarah Nelson in 1854, this secret recipe results in a unique product – a cross between a cake and a biscuit and nothing like crisp gingerbread used for gingerbread shapes. You can buy it from the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop in Grasmere village, next to the church. ...or Mint Cake in Kendal This famous little peppermint flavoured slice has been giving an energy boost to walkers and climbers in the Lake District for many years. In 1953, it even made it to the top of the world on the first ever successful Everest expedition. Herdwick lamb Due to the harsh Lake District climate on the higher fells, Herdwick lambs grow slowly. This makes the meat sweeter and fuller in flavour.
The Toffee Shop in Penrith, Cumbria on the edge of the Lake District, has been making fudge and toffee since 1910. Highly acclaimed, this little store in Penrith is known to have regular royal visitors. As an existing customer of the Toffee Shop through his business at Highgrove, the Prince of Wales was very keen to see the Fudge and Toffee being produced and in March 2003, made an eagerly awaited visit to the store, showing a special interest in the ingredients used. Lord Lichfield was even quoted as saying that The Toffee Shop’s fudge is “The best fudge in England and easily the best in the World”. Good, homemade food You just can’t beat homemade food, and people in Cumbria couldn’t agree more! That’s why there are fantastic opportunities to sample the homemade delights of freshly baked goods at the award-winning Village Bakery, tasty varieties of homemade icecream at Abbot’s Lodge and luxury chocolates at Kenndy’s Fine Chocolates in Orton. Taste it for yourself... If you’re looking for locally sourced specialities such as these, be sure to visit the award-winning Cranston’s Cumbrian Food Hall, Penrith. Championed by the community, this fantastic supermarket is proud to support local farmers and producers, praising the quality and range of food and drink the North West has to offer.

Fun Facts Ullswater is the area’s second largest lake, 884 hectares in site. Windermere, at 1459 hectares, is the largest and is the longest lake in the Lake District stretching 10.5 miles.
The Lake District became a National Park in 1951 and is England's largest covering 2292 square kilometres / 885 square miles.
Carlisle Cathedral, built in 1122, is the second smallest cathedral in Europe The deepest lake in the Lake District is Wastwater at approximately 260ft.
"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" ... Wordsworth’s famous 1807 poem was inspired by the sights and daffodils which he came across whilst wandering Glencoyne Bay, Ullswater, in the Lake District.
The miniscule St Olaf's church, situated on the banks of Wastwater at the head of the Wasdale Valley, is the smallest church in England. It was first mentioned in 1550 - 461 years ago! Its wooden roof beam is said to have been made from a Viking longboat.
Aira Force is Ullswater’s most famous waterfall and drops for nearly 20 metres. With a rich history stretching back thousands of years the district offers a wealth of fascinating places to discover. There are over 6000 known archaeological sites and monuments dating from prehistory to World War II.
King Arthur's Round Table at Eamont Bridge near Penrith is a prehistoric, circular earthwork with a central raised area surrounded by a ditch and is thought to date back to the Neolithic era, about c.2000BC. The site is free to visitors and is now under the control of English Heritage.
16
Scafell Pike at 978 metres (3210 feet), Helvellyn at 950 metres (3114 feet) and Skiddaw at 931 metres (3053 feet) are the three highest mountains in the Lake District.
The M6 Motorway, Rugby to Carlisle, is the longest motorway in Britain at just over 226 miles.
The River Eden, which has its source in the Mallerstang Valley, is one of the finest salmon and trout rivers in the North of England and you can enjoy some great riverside walks.
Her Majesty’s Theatre in Carlisle was the first theatre to be lit by Electricity in 1880. St. Olafs Church & King Arthurs Round Table pictures courtesy of www.visitcumbria.com, Aira Force by Andy Beecroft
