Welcome to

Harrogate & The Yorkshire Dales

Welcom to the greatest county in the UK, home to some of the finest attractions and best loved iconic landscapes anywhere in the world.

Many visitors are attracted by the atmosphere of Harrogate with its grand architecture and cosmopolitan flavour. It is no surprise that Harrogate, with its broad, tree lined streets, beautiful parks and gardens and the 200 acres of town centre grassland known as the Stray, is famous for its floral displays as well as being a historical spa town. Whether you are staying on business or for leisure, we are sure you will enjoy the combination of excellent shopping and ambience of this lovely town.

The Yorkshire Dales are really unique. A region of contrasts and beauty, the Dales embrace a diverse collection of wildlife habitats, a rich cultural heritage and is a place blessed with a rare sense of tranquillity. As a result, in 1954 over 680 square miles was designated a national park in recognition of the need to treasure and preserve these qualities.

main Dales, each noticeably different in character and aura from the next. On the one hand, there’s the wild moorland and steeping ushaped valleys of the northern Dales, such as Arkengathdale and Swaledale. Here you can let your mind get lost in the remoteness of the surroundings. On the other, there are the gentler, broader, southern valleys of Airedale and lower Wharfedale that roll into the urban areas of West Yorkshire.

Situated astride the Pennines in the North of England, the Dales span North Yorkshire and the southern fringes of Cumbria. There are over 20

For over 10,000 years, people have lived on this incredible land and their legacy has been left in the form of ancient settlement sites, disused mineral workings and the

patchwork of dry-stone walls and barns, typical of the Dales. Early farmers cleared the woodland and developed the fields that blanket the landscape today. Today, around 20,000 people live within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, many of whom earn their living from farming and tourism. Taking care of the sheep on the fells, tending to the hay and wild flower meadows in the valley bottoms whilst surrounded by clean, sparkling rivers that wind their way down through the valleys has long been a way of life for the Dale’s farmers. The result is a stunning landscape cherished by

residents and visitors alike. Here amidst this wonderful scenery, you will discover attractions, castles and stately homes that tell the story of this wonderful land. Pretty stone built market towns and villages are full of interesting shops and pubs, while the many cafés and tea-rooms serve delicious local fare that you can enjoy after an exhilarating walk or day out.

Enjoy Harrogate. Enjoy the Yorkshire Dales.

Welcome to York & District

Welcome to

The North York Moors, East Coast & The Wolds

Designated a National Park in 1952, The North York Moors are characterised by their incredible beauty and a calming sense of space, solitude and tranquility.

Whatever the season, the Moors offer the perfect place to get away from it all and experience spectacular countryside. Ridge upon ridge of purple heather moorlands extend into the distance, while the natural beauty of secluded dales and rugged heritage coastlines make it the ideal place to explore. Wildlife enthusiasts can hear the call of upland birds in the moorland peace and with over 2,300km of paths and tracks, including the Cleveland Way and Coast to Coast Na-

2 The North York Moors, East Coast & The Wolds

tional Trails, the North York Moors are a walker’s and cyclist’s paradise. The picturesque fishing port of Whitby has little changed since the days of its famous son, Captain Cook. With its sheer cliffs and ominous gothic architecture, Whitby proved to be the perfect inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous dramatic novel Dracula. For a bustling and buzzing seaside atmosphere, try Scarborough. Packed with seaside attractions, the coastal town caters for the whole family. The East Yorkshire coastline ranges from the golden splendour of some of Britain’s finest beaches, to the wave pounded rocks of the East Coast’s highest cliffs at Flamborough Head.

Creating the perfect scenic background to accompany the beautiful coastline are the rolling hills of The Yorkshire Wolds, the local quaint country towns, where you can enjoy the Georgian charm of Beverley and Howden, and many a historic house. On the Humber Estuary you can visit maritime Hull - with a long deep-sea fishing tradition and now a leading port and gateway to Europe - whilst further inland you can find the port of Goole, or experience the natural beauty of Spurn Point stretching three and half miles into the Humber Estuary from the Holderness Coast. Enjoy the North Yorks Moors, East Coast and The Wolds.
