From The Publishers Desk

There is a Chinese Proverb that says, “A family in harmony will prosper in everything.” And a family can be any group of people united by blood, relationship, business, friendship, political persuasion and citizenship. Over this past year we have seen our nation sustain itself through grief, turmoil, conflict, depression and sorrow. And we’ve seen our nation come together as a family and bounce back from the pain of an economy gone south. We’ve seen our collective conscious come together and mourn the loss of little children and of the devastation wrecked by mother nature on one of the greatest cities in the world. The infinite possibilities of what family mean have never been clearer to me than during the past few months when I moved beyond my comfort zone to encounter new friendships, new relationships, and new life. When working on this month’s cover story of a new era for E’LON, I realized it’s a new era for humanity. This month we’re celebrating the meaning of family by embracing the beauty in all of us from around the globe. Find the many faces of our global family on page 60. This new era also means working with a new crew of the greatest writers, editors, stylist and photographers I can imagine (that’s me on set of our latest photo shoot), who are all part of my new family. No matter what family means to you, embrace and enjoy the happiness, prosperity and success that only family can bring and just like our nation, let’s allow our healing as a family to begin.

RIGHT UPFRONT… Did You Know? that beauty was now being redefined by everyone around the world. Over the years we have had a few Boston University student Olivia Culpo, Miss USA, was crowned Miss Universe Wednesday night in cities and companies around the globe define what Las Vegas. beauty was. But sitting there I knew that the definition of what that would look like in the future was also changing. A sea of black, brown and yellow faces one by one came out to represent their nations. Eighty-eight beautiful women in all represented their nation’s top honor of not just beauty, but brains, talent and so much more. On this night the crown would be passed on from an African beauty, Leila Luliana da Costa Vieira Lopes an Angolan beauty queen who won the titles of Miss Angola UK 2010, Miss Angola 2010 and later Miss Universe 2011. The crown would be passed on to Boston University student Olivia Culpo, who was the reigning Miss USA, and was subsequently crowned Miss Universe that night in Las Vegas.

Global Beauty On Wednesday,

December 20th in Las Vegas, I

attended the Miss Universe Pageant. Almost immediately I was struck by the sea of faces and images that told me this was truly a global competition. I know a thing or two about pageants since I’ve grown up competing in them for as long as I can remember. I’ve competed in local competitions as well as National and even an international pageant or two. But, nothing that comes close to the grandeur of the scale of the Miss Universe Pageant. I think what was so evident and obvious for many of us that night, who have seen local and National pageants, was the beautiful women in all hues from around the globe. It was immediate to me

On this night as I stood in applause at such a sight I wondered if the big beauty brands were even considering that the idea of beauty was and is changing all around us. Beauty is no longer a singular concept and I wonder if we are still so single-minded to even believe so. Angelique Mattox, is a freelance writer and former beauty queen living in Miami, Fla. Inspire A Life The Dawn of New Paths In out of the way places My thoughts begin to wander This new beginning has been quietly forming As the inner chamber of my heart begins to ponder. It whispers, I have watched as a stranger Looking on at the changes taking place Pulling you in new directions Leaving behind a past perfect place. I watched with sadness Wanting to hold onto all that has gone before. Whispered silently to you of the dangers ahead Certain you would change and let me lead instead. Yet your soul has overwhelmed even me The heart the keeper of each new yesterday. Taking you to soar to new heights Your soul is now free in search of new light.

Change Is Coming

‌The Gospel Truth And My New Year Resolve Christmas has come to an end and the decorations have been put away. But before we settle into this New Year, I thought I would share what I learned about resolutions. You know those things you resolve to do in order to be a better you. Those things that will make you healthier, thinner, richer. Well, you fill in the blank, but you know what I mean. For most of us we will have forgotten what our resolve was before we enter the month of February. But what exactly is resolve and why do we need it?

26 /

E’LON Magazine

A New Year resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit. A resolution is a commitment you make to yourself. So why is it so hard to keep commitments to ourselves? And if we are so easily led away from the commitments we make to ourselves can then even be trusted to make a commitment to another person like in marriage? This year I am determined to live by my faith and that means making commitments that are based on what I believe in and not simply vanity to change something I don’t like about my external self. Here, the list I came up with.

Change Is Coming

The Gospel Truth and My New Year Resolve

 I resolve to quit letting what other people think guide my life. I will embrace this life God has given me, paying attention to what important to me. I will love this person with her gifts and talents and not allow what others think of what I do to become a deterrent.

I will honor how I feel. I’m really not sure who started the whole, “don’t cry thing,” but a good cry is often cleansing for the soul and very helpful in allowing us to let go. Our emotions are a good barometer on our ability to deal with life’s trials. So this year I will honor when I’m sad or angry or just hurt and afraid. It will be good for my soul.

 I resolve to stop blaming others for life’s ups and downs As a human being made in God's image, I recognize that no one is responsible for my life and happiness but me. I will take responsibility to choose my own life and help others do the same. I can't change others, but I can change myself.

 I will quit saying yes. I don’t mean yes for yes sake. But, I’m usually the first volunteer at school or church. I’m usually the first one to pay for lunch or dinner even when I don’t really have the money or the time. I want to say yes to myself and live by my truths.

 I resolve to be honest with myself and others I will be brutally honest with myself, especially with my own thoughts and feelings. And, I will walk in my truth and not fear what others think. Speaking truth to my fears allows me to conquer what I need to confront. Even if it means that my feelings are hurt and although I am not intentionally out to hurt others when we walk in truth others are often hurt by that transparency.

 I will quit judging. I always assume (and you know what they say about that) what others are thinking about any situation. I’m usually judging a situation before it even happens and in my head coming up with the solution or the way out. And as often than not what I thought would happen never actually happens. So in the end I’ve wasted time I could have used on something else. I hope this New Year will find you commiting to the resolve of changing your life for the better and for you. Those type of resolutions take the courage to face our own reflections in the mirror and resolve to live the Gospel truth.

State of the Union / Even if we don’t agree with the President or the Congress, we are all in this together. We all either sink or swim

Imagine

the setting.

A post

election year State of the Union address in front of a largely hostile Congress who face divisive issues within their own party ranks. While we are all at home watching the President of the United States give the State of the Union address and acting as arm

chair quarter backs, ninety-nine percent of us are not qualified for the job, nor do we want the job. Why? Well it takes a certain backbone to stand before a public, your employees and stockholders (We The People) and tell them why we’ve all gone to hell in a hand basket and not only did we drop off that cliff but we each in turn held the shovel that built that cliff. Since the last State of the Union address was given the world changed by leaps and bounds. We saw the ninety-nine percent occupy the streets, and we saw governments that we assumed were stable topple from the inside out. We saw an economy trickle itself back to health like someone getting over a bad flu. And we saw a country react to greed and politics as usual by re-electing a President that by all historical standards should have been a one-term President. In the 1992, State of the Union address by George Herbert Walker Bush, he said, “Now to our troubles at home, they are not all economic, but the primary problem is our economy. There are certain things a president can do without Congress, and I am going to do them.” Voters made him a one-term President. Suffice it to say that if this President echoed those words verbatim this contentious Congress would be calling it treasonous. But, this is not about the President or Congress. It’s not about us versus them or the haves and the have not’s. Why, because President Obama has made his argument to the American people and he has won re-election handily. The voices of ‘Forward’ have prevailed. Yet moving forward is a some Continued on page 32

what subjective proposition. Where does forward begin? Our inner cities are plagued with high unemployment and closed schools. Our rural areas, facing the same crisis are faced with boarded up factory jobs that have been shipped overseas and mass home foreclosures. Annually every business revisits its mission and vision plan to determine if it is headed in the right direction. The US government is our nation’s largest business. And the State of the Union is a revisit of the mission and vision and the goals and objectives that will help make that business sustainable and profitable. Yet any other small or Stock photo

large business would have gone under. As shareholders we owe it to ourselves to be informed beneficiaries of the products and services provided by the US government. We must view closely the language coming out of Recovery Acts and press our Congressional Representatives when they vote against bills destined to help veterans find jobs. The State of the Union is only as strong as the largest representation of that Union and that is the Middle Class. And no greater challenge faces Congress in the year ahead than to restore the middle class, which is being crushed by widespread unemployment, rising income inequality and a sense that the political system is indifferent to its plight. For many of us we are the middle class and like it or not the buck stops with us. State of the Union is the state of each and every one of our lives. So this year let’s stop party bickering and figure out how to have a healthy economy, a vibrant small business sector and a nation that is once again a superpower not just abroad but right here at home. - YW

Tips We Love Cold

winter weather can play havoc with your skin. But, why do we use the same skincare routine we used during the hot humid months of summer? But unless you aspire to cracked lips, dry hands, and cracked heels, don’t despair there is hope and a way to keep great skin all winter long. And the good news…it’s cost effective and good for you inside and out. That’s right this winter why not try eating your way back to great skin and keep your body healthy in the process. We went in search of women around the globe living in such places like Alaska, Finland, Iceland and even our Canadian neighbors in Saskatchewan to find out their secrets to gorgeous skin during the cold dark days of winter.

Vitamin D & E Olive Oil

While we tend to think of vitamin D as providing our bones with calcium and Vitamin E mainly used in topical skin creams, using both during the winter months is one key to maintaining healthy skin. Since we get our main source of Vitamin D from the sun, during the harsh winter months when we are in inside more often, getting our necessary sources of Vitamins D & E is as easy as looking in the fridge or pantry. Try to have between 3 – 4 servings of Vitamins D & E per day. Sources of Vitamin D  Dairy of course but, oily fish is a great dietary source as well.  Egg yolks, liver and wild mushrooms also contain essential quantities of Vitamin D. Sources of Vitamin E  Vitamin E is found in carrots, sweet potatoes and yellow and orange peppers.  Why not have a glass of red wine as Vitamin E can be found in blackberries, grapes and blueberries.

 Olive oil mixed with fine salt makes a great exfoliator for your lips. Most people slather on the lip balm in cold weather but that’s not getting rid of the dead skin caused by winter weather exposure. Exfoliate first and then apply your favorite all day moisturizer (really the same one you use on your face).  A mashed-up avocado makes the perfect winter face mask, as it is rich in Vitamin E and can nourish the skin when applied directly to it.

Vitamin B  Vitamin B helps regulate skin cell growth and the turnover of dead dry flaky skin on the face and body. Great sources of Vitamin B include Turnip and Collard Greens, Kale, Broccoli and Brown Rice.  For the body keep showers short and lukewarm not hot and long. And remember to use body products with alpha-hydroxy acids which peel away dead, dry skin, so it gets rid of the flaking while offering deep hydration.  Load up on foods rich in essential fatty acids, like flaxseed, hemp, and olive oil.

 Tropical fruits such as kiwi, papaya contain a blend of exfoliating fruit acids. Just apply directly to your face for ten minutes at least once a week.  Anti-oxidant minerals like selenium found in nuts, chicken, turkey and eggs help to prevent dry skin and give the skin a youthful appearance.

A Luxury Experience aute

most of us can’t even begin to pronounce the name of the luxury designer Kluk CGdt, wearing the brand requires only one thing. And, that understanding is simply about quality design style, investing in clothes that become classics and are anything but trendy. That’s what founders Malcolm Kluk and Christiaan Gabriel du Toit have done with their latest collection showcased at the Mercedez Benz Fashion Show in Africa in October of 2012. Their signature theme of luxury and classics ran through each piece and reminded this American of the days of Bonnie and Clyde as portrayed by Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty in the classic crime drama of 1967. I think you will agree that every girl should have at least one Kluk CGdt piece in her wardrobe. This classic, yet from modern duo continues to wow us each season with classic apparel that appeals to even the most trendy among us. Only two words can define a Kluk CGdt luxury experience and those are ‘timeless appeal’. Faye Dunaway as Bonnie would have looked stunning in any one of the pieces from this beautiful collection.

BEAUTY Around The Globe

There

is a saying that beauty is only skin deep. But we know through the media that beauty is also a human obsession. And it’s an obsession that spans cultures. And beauty is not a black and white issue. Each culture around the globe has its own standard of beauty. From Japan where eating collagen infused foods for the perfect complexion set the standard for beauty, to parts of West Africa, where fat is fabulous, one country’s beauty can often be another’s ugly and unacceptable. Story, Yolanda Webb Photo, James Ray

While Americans obsess over weight and thinness and hair color and tanned skin, in some Asian countries pale skin is the norm for beauty. And while Marketers have been hell bent on aggressively marketing skin whitening products in Asia and Africa, women in these countries are fighting back to maintain their own standard of beauty. Here at E’LON we’re taking a look at beauty around the world to help you understand that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. And how we behold beauty may be the key to greater understanding, communication and a broader and more perfect world.

Japanese women believe their skin is the key to true beauty. And, the ideal is fair, smooth skin. While some Americans get collagen and Botox injections to erase wrinkles, Japanese women believe in a different approach—they consume collagen-infused foods. And many restaurants even feature collagen, which is derived from animals like cows and chickens, on their menus.

New Zealand - Thousands of miles away from the border of Burma and Thailand, the Maori people of New Zealand practice a sacred beauty ritual—tattooing. These indigenous people, who are of Polynesian descent, believe women are more attractive when their lips and chins are tattooed. A woman with full, blue lips is considered the most beautiful and desirable.

Mauritania – In this West African country halfway around the world, bigger is definitely better. Mauritania is a desert oasis that sits on the northwest coast of Africa. Here, a woman's beauty is revered— but being thin isn't. And, for generations, young girls were subjected to the practice of gavage—or force feeding—and sent to camps to fatten them up. Although force feeding is now frowned upon by the government, old habits die hard in remote areas of the country. Even in Mauritania's more progressive cities, some women are willing to do anything for a fuller figure, including buying black-market drugs meant for animals. E’LON Magazine /

59

Burma - On the border of Burma and Thailand, members of the Kayan tribe begin their beauty rituals at a young age. Known as "long necks" or, more crudely, "giraffe women," the Kayan women, a Tibeto-Burman ethnic minority of Burma, wrap brass coils around their necks starting at just age five. As they grow older, more rings are added, and eventually, their necks start to look elongated, giving them a giraffe-like appearance. For these women, the shiny brass rings are the ultimate sign of female elegance and status. Some neck pieces can weigh up to 22 pounds.

India - Known for their exotic beauty, in India, women take a more natural approach to beauty. Some use homemade remedies to beautify themselves. On her wedding day, an Indian bride may use a mixture of turmeric, lemon and honey on her skin to achieve a glowing complexion.

United States – Beauty is being redefined in America. With the increase in the number of people of color from Hispanic, Asian and Black cultures, America is embracing all forms of beauty. From very pale skintones to very dark tones beauty in magazines, on television and in movies is being reshaped. Where thin was once in we find that runway models are being advised against being to thin so as not to send the wrong message to young girls. At E’LON we like that new message and in this new era aim to be inclusive as we embrace beauty and beauty trends from around the globe. - YW

Start your beauty routine with a primer. If you're old enough for laugh lines, a skin care makeover can give you a fresher, younger look. Our skin dries and thins with age, so products used five years ago may look quite matronly today. A better routine calls for skin primer, A high-quality primer fills in small wrinkles, making them less visible.

Choose your foundation wisely for your skin type and age. While liquid foundations look great and silky smooth on younger looking skin. It can look like you’re trying to hard if you are over forty. And while Matte finish foundations look better coverage wise for mature skin remember that it works best on normal to oily skin. If you have dry skin a liquid or crème foundation always work best.

As we age, our eyelids tend to droop, so the goal is to draw attention away from the lid and toward the actual eye. Eyeliner is the key. Apply it in a thin streak along the line where the lashes begin, top and bottom. This will enhance the shape of your eye and create the illusion of thicker lashes. Use soft shades and a light touch when applying eye shadow.

3 Few things draw attention to lines around your mouth like bleeding lip color. This happens because lipstick is a cream, and it tends to slip into any low spaces which includes the lines around your mouth. To keep color from bleeding or moving, use a moisturizer, then coat your lips with foundation before applying lipstick. Always line your lips after applying your lipstick. Apply a bit of gloss to the center for a sexy pout.

Our eyebrows take a lot of wear and tear. From plucking and shaving, to waxing and threading. Over the years the damage we do to our eyebrows can be irreversible. As we began to age our eyebrow hair just like that on our head tends to thin out. Redefine your eyebrows to frame your face and create a younger appearance. Use a brow powder rather than a wax pencil to create a more natural look.

Even the best quality makeup will have a tough time concealing dry, flaky lips. It is essential to moisturize your lips often. Lip balms with shea butter, petroleum jelly, or vitamin E work well. And, look for a product with sunscreen to protect against the sun's drying effect.

6

We often make ourselves look older simply by not getting enough sleep. If your eyes look tired, of course the most obvious solution may be to get more rest. Sleep triggers the release of hormones that help the skin remain thicker and more elastic. To reduce eye puffiness, cut back on salt and stay well hydrated. You can also try soothing swollen eyes with cool cucumber slices or moist tea bags. And try E’LON Cosmetics Wide Awake Caffeine Eye Crème; $30 elon.com

7 E’LON Magazine /

65

8

9

10

Getting enough sleep can also minimize dark circles under the eyes. But in some people, the discoloration comes from too much pigmentation in the skin. In that case, creams containing lightening agents such as retinol, hydroquinone, green tea, or vitamin C may help. To camouflage dark circles, use a concealer one shade lighter than your skin and yellowish in tone. One of our favorites (besides our own) is Clinique’s All About Eyes Concealer; $16.50 clinique.com

Good skin is essential at any age. And, every beauty routine should consist of exfoliation. Exfoliation gets rid of dead, dry skin cells to reveal the fresher skin underneath. You can use a washcloth, along with an exfoliating cleanser, to gently scrub your face and body. Exfoliating regularly will help remove dull, flaky skin. But be careful not to scrub too hard or you could leave the skin raw and irritated.

Be careful of the type of eyeliner and mascara you purchase. Inexpensive brands can be great but if they slip and slide down your face leaving dark circles under your eye, they really aren’t worth the money you paid for them. The best way to ensure that your products all work well together is to buy products in the same brand family. They are made to complement one another. Try E’LON long wearing eye pencils. Urban Inspired Dressing

Fashion stylist Nicole Bell believes that street fashion is hard to define. But, she says you know it when you see it. “It sets trends, she states, “The thing about living in urban areas is that you are free to experiment and you’re not bound by what other people think, say or do,” she says. From cities like Memphis to New York urban areas often tend to be the center of creative living. And when you have that many creative people living among each other you have eclectic styles in art, fashion, music and more.

While most retailers are selling what

designers are creating as original ideas, if you take the time to drive through any urban area you will more likely than not see those fashion trends on young people even before they become popular in suburban malls. And I’m not talking about young black urban kids. Urban street chic trends have been around for hundreds of years, from the hippies and beatniks, to the jazz infused era of the Cotton Club in Harlem and television shows like the Mod Squad. And it happens in every generation. Don’t think you can wear street chic styles? Well, the thing about street chic is not to copy an entire outfit, but to choose urban inspired pieces and update your wardrobe. Be willing to experiment visit the urban core and look around. Go to museums, coffee shops and the theatre in your local downtown. And don’t worry the next wave of inspired street chic, urban inspired design is just around the corner. Story by Jennica Carson. The Hot List Social Media Savvy Sisters By Carla Young “WHAT IS IT ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA THAT CAN TURN A SMALL BUSINESS INTO AN OVERNIGHT POWERHOUSE AND RELATIVE UNKNOWNS INTO POWERFUL BUSINESS WOMEN?” I went in search of the answer to that question, and to find out who these women were, when asked to write an article on the hottest women in social media today. That list ranged from the likes of Arianna Huffington, who took a small online news idea into a corporate powerhouse via social media, to Crystal Washington, a powerhouse motivational speaker in high demand around the country. The Huffington Post was founded by Arianna Huffington in May 2005 and launched a few days later on May 9. It now has an active community, with over one million comments made on the site each month. Prior to The Huffington Post, Huffington hosted a website called Ariannaonline.com. But her first real foray into the Internet and Social Media online was a website called Resignation.com which called for the resignation of President Bill Clinton and was followed closely by the conservative base. But, how have women and companies like The Huffington Post used platforms like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to reach new clients and build existing relationships? Unless you’ve been on an isolated island with no electricity you are more than aware that online social networking giants like Facebook and Twitter have become mainstream. If you’re a confused and overwhelmed entrepreneur or small business owner, seeking support to figure out how to monetize all these new social media tools and platforms and get in on a rare opportunity to take your business from small to smart read on for inspiration from those at the top of the hot list in Social Media Marketing and Networking to grow your business. ---

What We’re Reading The Testament of Mary By Colm Toibin

BEST BEAUTY READS

In his new novel, The Testament of Mary, Irish writer Colm Toibin imagines Mary's life 20 years after the crucifixion. She is struggling to understand why some people believe Jesus is the son of God, and weighed down by the guilt she feels wondering what she might have done differently to alter — or ease — her son's fate.

What We’re Reading “No matter how famous you are, how much money you make, or how ‘big’ you become in the eyes of the world, none of us is immune to the challenges of life and being human,” - Iyanla Vanzant.

PEACE FROM BROKEN PIECES: How to Get Through What You’re Going Through By Iyanla Vanzant A Conversation with Iyanla Vanzant

I remember meeting Iyanla Vanzant in 1994 when I served as the 1st Basileus of my sorority in Cincinnati, Ohio and I arranged for her to speak at our Founders Day event. I was elated when she said yes as I had read her first two books and was a great admirer of this powerful woman. I even arranged to bring my mom in from Detroit to meet and hear her talk. Mom and I picked her up at the airport and even had dinner with her the night before the event. The impact she had on my life was nothing short of profound. When Iyanla’s life began to fall I also watched. Not as a voyeur but as someone who had learned from her that there are lessons in failure as well as success.

Today to see her recover from her fall and pick up the pieces after so much loss is nothing short of miraculous, although I suspect Iyanla would say its divine order. Taking Iyanla back to the airport the night after her keynote speech to a sold out founder’s day dinner, we talked. Well she talked and I mostly listened as I soaked up every piece of wisdom I could in that short drive to the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport. She talked about living life led by spirit filled wisdom. After she exited the car and I headed out of the airport I knew one day I would have the chance to be changed by the words Iyanla left in my heart that day. When I decided to review Peace from Broken Pieces it was well after the books release. For me the book and my meeting with her would have a totally different meaning. “What ever happened to Iyanla Vanzant?” In the 90s, Iyanla Vanzant (pronounced ē-YÄN-lä) emerged as one of the nation’s most beloved personal growth gurus. As a popular guest on Oprah, millions read her books and thousands gathered to attend her standing-room-only inspirational talks. Internationally renowned, Vanzant was fulfilling her mission to support others on their journey to personal empowerment. Outwardly, Iyanla was the epitome of self-confidence, however, deep inside, her soul grieved as her carefully crafted world began to crumble and fall to pieces. Peace from Broken Pieces lays bare the painful truths and private tragedies that defined her journey—from the price she paid for success during her meteoric rise as a TV Celebrity on Oprah and Iyanla, to the dissolution of her 37-year relationship with the first man she had ever loved, and her daughter’s death from cancer on Christmas Day. Part metaphorical teaching story, part wrenching personal chronicle, this phoenix rising-from the-ashes tale is about men and money, love and work, mothers and daughters, life and death, and the patterns and pathologies that families pass down through the generations—until someone gets clear enough to break free. Iyanla’s story is everyone’s story. As she investigates her family history and how she navigated the treacherous and often unconscious, self-destructive patterns, she discovers that she not only lived these inheritances, she passed them on to her own children. In the face of Vanzant’s uncompromising examples, readers are prompted to hold up a mirror and examine their own lives in the context of the family they were raised in. “If we dare to recognize our harmful family patterns and legacies, we may be able to help succeeding generations avoid or circumvent them,” says Vanzant. Courageous, poignant, and straight from the heart, the unforgettable story of Iyanla’s determination to find peace amidst the fragmented pieces of her life will inspire anyone who refuses to be defeated in the face of adversity.

YW: What can readers expect from reading Peace? IV: I am going to tell you a story about how a New York Times best-selling author ends up flat broke, looking for a place to live; how a 37-year relationship ends in divorce by e-mail. I am going to share the intimate details of how an internationally recognized spiritual teacher ends up on the edge of the bed in a million-dollar home slated for foreclosure, contemplating suicide. I am going to tell you about betrayal and the devastation it causes for everyone involved. I am also going to tell you about the power of friends, faith, and prayer. In this book, I share what I have learned about having and not having a vision, and the cost of holding on to a vision that is not yours. I want people to know what I have learned about personality flaws, human weaknesses, a corrupted mind, a broken heart, and a depleted spirit. These are the pieces of my life that led to its total and complete collapse—pieces of a puzzle I didn’t even know existed until my life fell into pieces. YW: Is there a point when you realized your life was falling into broken pieces? IV: When your life starts to fall apart, it doesn’t always happen all at once. One fell swoop of the universe’s backhand across your face might be more merciful. I had no idea that this was just the beginning of a collapse that would span seven years. It was October 1999 when the Oprah pebble landed, sending an unmistakable ripple through the river of my life. It was December 25, 2003 when the proverbial brick hit me in the head. And it didn’t stop there. As we move into a New Year, read Peace from Broken Pieces to start your new journey back to wholeness and the fullness which we were all created for. And as Iyanla says…“The new you will be willing to get up, stand up, and step up for your honor and dignity. The old you may have behaved like a handmaiden, waiting to be told what to do and how to do it. The new you is the queen, ready and willing to take the throne of your life and rule your inner and outer kingdom with dominion, power, and authority.”

DREAM BIGGER DREAMS LIFE WITH MICHELLE ROBINSON-MCKISSACK By Yolanda Webb _____

I have a confession to make. I am an extraordinarily shy person. Most people don’t believe that when they meet me. As the Editor of a growing fashion and news magazine, in the course of a week I get to meet some of the most interesting people in the world. And when I meet a strong, confident woman, it is often with a level of difficulty that I open myself up and overcome my shyness, step out of my proverbial comfort zone and have a one-on-one conversation with them. That was not the case with award winning journalist Michelle Robinson-McKissack. In the years I have been in print journalism I have had the honor to meet and interview a number of award winning journalist including Soledad O’Brien and Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post. While both were gracious and unpretentious, powerful and enlightening,

Michelle and I clicked right away during the interview which lasted about an hour. I might add that it may have helped that we had initially met at a ‘Girls Night Out” event in Memphis, Tennessee which she calls home. When I walked into the event I immediately saw this tall, well-dressed sister girl commanding attention with a small group of people around her. As I made my way around the room, networking and introducing myself to new friends in my new adopted home town, I had the pleasure to meet Michelle, her mother and her aunt. As she talked about her latest enterprise, as an Arbonne International Representative, I had no idea who she was. Yet, it was clear this was someone who did a lot more than sell beauty and healthcare products. I immediately asked her if we could have coffee or lunch and an interview. In preparing for my interview with Michelle, I found out that this ‘Mompreneur’ and this Emmy award winning journalist had walked away from a broadcast career spanning from Memphis to Washington, DC. While in Chicago, Illinois Michelle was the national correspondent and managing editor for the lifestyle television news magazine show, next TV, where she won an Emmy for her work. She has covered events ranging from the Democratic National Convention to local gala events in Chicago and stories on entrepreneurship. Michelle is recognizable to Memphis viewers for her many years as a news anchor and reporter at both WPTY-TV (ABC) and WREG-TV (CBS). Michelle says she never envisioned herself as an entrepreneur, but it is her family that prompted her to look at what she really wants for her life. For most women Michelle’s story resonates in trying to figure out, ‘how to do it all.’ Continued on next page

YW: You have a lot going on…you are the mom of three rambunctious boys and a brand new baby girl…you seem to have it so together. How do you achieve that work-life balance we all strive for? MRM: I think for me it’s just that I don’t over think it. I don’t over analyze life. For me I had and have a wonderful role model on how to make it all work through my mother. She always had a lot going on and I just never heard her complain about it. But what I also have is a good system. I have a great support system in the people I rely upon. I also am really good at compartmentalizing what I am doing and where I am. For example, if I’m volunteering at my child’s school, I am very focused on that. I’m not in one place and thinking about another. Being focused and operating in the present moment really helps to achieve balance. My one goal is that I try to accomplish one significant thing in the morning and one significant thing in the afternoon. YW: What’s your one fashion ‘must have’ or must do before you leave the house in the morning?

MRM: That’s funny because I don’t think I’ve ever thought about that. I would have to say its lip gloss. YW: You were in a pageant. Tell me about that experience MRM: Oh my goodness yes! I was Mrs. West Tennessee 2007 and went on to the State Mrs. Tennessee Pageant. I didn’t win but was in the top ten. I really did it because I had never competed before in a pageant. It was a lot of fun and I thought let me do this and I found out as a journalist that being in a pageant is a whole lot more challenging than most people think. It was such a rewarding experience and I didn’t know I would get as much out of the experience as I did. It may sound cliché but what I found out is that pageants are really not about the beauty. They really are based on this foundation of helping others in society since those that win often participate in some rewarding community volunteer experiences. It taught me also about how to project my image to the world at large. I also realized from that experience from being around all those positive people that its my choice how I present myself.

YW: You left behind a promising broadcast career to become a ‘Mompreneur’ any regrets over that choice?

And, the second part to that question is why Arbonne and what do you find most challenging being an entrepreneur?

MRM: Not at all. None. Like any career everything has it’s up and downs. And when I left television full-time I had three children. It was always about family and for me family is everything. At the end of the day it is family who is there for you. But I had a wonderful career. I felt so blessed and I felt if I never did another thing I was blessed. I’ve interviewed Presidents and people like Nelson Mandela. And now I find it so much fun to be my children’s personal life coach. I’m helping to shape their lives for the future. And, I still have my hands in lots of other things. For me just as you mentioned earlier we have to maintain that personal work life balance. Television news is really hard on families so I welcomed this time to focus on my family.

MRM: Hmm, why Arbonne? Well you know I didn’t go looking for it. It came in to my life at a time when I was looking for something in a very unconscious way. My youngest child, my daughter was born with eczema and was prescribed a medication that I was uncomfortable using. I was searching for something much more natural. A friend suggested I try Arbonne’s baby care line. I tried it and it was amazing in the difference in her skin. So as I learned more about the product line I came to use the product and was comfortable selling what I was using for myself and my family. The challenging part of it as an entrepreneur is the discipline that you need as an entrepreneur. Now it’s about being more organized as a businesswoman.

YW: But as you mentioned you haven’t just been doing the mom thing you are now an entrepreneur.

YW: What advice would you give a young woman or any woman who is contemplating stepping out on her own and taking that risk of entrepreneurship? MRM: I would say to make sure you know why you are doing it. And your why has to be so much greater than making a salary. Because on those days when you’re not making as much as you did in your salary your reward has to come from something else and it has to go back to why you are doing this. For me it’s because I want to be able to pass along generational wealth for my children. YW: Last question…What are your favorite words to live by? MRM: Dream bigger dreams. We have to give ourselves permission to dream bigger than what we can accomplish. With God everything is possible. My faith is in God so we should not just dream but dream bigger dreams. Michelle is also an avid community volunteer. She is a woman who dreams bigger dreams for herself, her family and her community and she takes action to make things happen! ---YW

BUSINESS / FINANCE Anita R. Johnson on why…

‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ 3. Create a Savings Plan - Most people don’t have a savings plan of any kind. They have no emergency, or retirement, investment funds. Now is the time no matter what your income to begin tucking 3% of your money in at least one saving vehicles (retirement, IRA, Savings account) 4. Develop a Financial Spending Plan (formerly called a budget). This is probably one of the most difficult things for people to learn. You will want to track your finances for three months before beginning your financial spending plan. After tracking your finances (income and expenses) take the average amount of each category to develop your financial spending plan.

Women are involved in an array of decisions. Women are bosses, consumers, wage earners, and trailblazers. Women are ½ of the labor force; and they control $10 million in business in our of $1.1 trillion annual salaries. Four out 10 businesses that were started during the recession were started by women. With all the gains women are making, they are more likely to hold a part time job, while earning .77 cents to every $1.00 a man earns. Over 90% of women worry about being bag ladies, and 80% of them will rely on Social Security and their retirement when they retire. Sixty-six percent of these women have not talked with their spouse about life insurance and estate planning. Are you wondering where you might stand financially? If so, I’m glad you are asking those question because you can do something about it right now. Big girls that don’t cry take up their financial workbooks and begin to work their financial woes through. There are ten ingredients that are simple and practical, for putting you back on the track to financial security. 1. Start Where You Are - Begin your journey with one foot in front of the other, and yesterday was yesterday. You are building a new financial base that will take you into your future and a secure future for your children. 2. Make a Date with Your Finances - Most of us have had a significant other we couldn’t wait to see. That’s exactly how I want you to think about your finances. I want you to be excited to become financially secure. Learn to do whatever it takes to get that feeling.

94 / E’LON Magazine

5. Know your area of weakness – Hire an expert and interview several firms to help you through this journey. Do you need an accountant, tax expert, banker, financial advisor, insurance agent? Whomever you need get them on your team. 6. Develop a wish list- From your financial spending plan, list the expenses you want to pay off first. Develop a plan that includes the name, the amount and the date you want to pay off the expense. 7. Be realistic - Develop a plan that will allow you to be realistic with paying your expenses and investing in your retirement. 8. Be disciplined- It takes a lot of discipline to be financially secure. Say often to yourself “I am going to be financially secure.” 9. Stay focused - This statement goes hand in hand with being disciplined. Write down your financial goals. Read them in the morning, noon and before going to bed. You will reach your goals. 10. Have fun! - Celebrate your success. When you develop your financial spending plan, celebrate. When you set up your investment plan - celebrate. Celebrate everything! Anita R. Johnson is a Wealth Management Coach and owner of Money Wisdom for Women. INTERIORS

KITCHENS… A thousand details create one room By Tara Glenn I love kitchens. It is the center of the house. It should be the gathering place for family and friends. A kitchen should be the most inviting room in the house. With all the new designs I wanted to focus on the designers for this article, but I think I would rather just focus on the designs and let you decide for yourself as a reader if the style would work for you. And I’ve included two personal favorites from homeowners who have amazing kitchens that simply open up and invite you in.

The X-Style Metal Mullion adds an elegant touch to this traditional Wood-Mode kitchen. The eye is drawn right to it as they complement this kitchen design.

Usually rattan is associated with outdoor furniture, but why not use it as a cabinet door insert? It adds a beautiful texture to this Wood-Mode closet cabinet.

96 / E’LON Magazine

Selecting a gorgeous cabinet insert can transform your space and add a decorative and personal style to your kitchen. I’m not a fan of a floor-to-ceiling mass of wood cabinets. For 30+ years we believe a great kitchen is all about details, fantastic design, and expertly precise installation. The choices you make will absolutely influence the feel of your kitchen These photos and descriptions by Grace Kelly in Kitchen Design, Cabinetry, WoodMode, Bentwood, How To’s, Planning | Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly, Inc. © 2012, Showroom locations: 26 Hillside Avenue, Williston Park, NY 516-746-3435 - 11 Bridge Street, Sag Harbor, NY 631-808-3116

The humble backsplash isn’t just for practical purposes anymore. Besides catching water and dirt from touching the walls behind sinks and stoves, backsplashes can also make a strong design statement. But what was once fashionable is no longer much used, and backsplash trends have changed over the past few years. Pat’s Kitchen (show here0 has a features a custom backsplash and is a peninsula style kitchen with granite counter tops. The following photos are from Pat’s Kitchen. Photography by James Ray

Whatever your budget, from small to large, it’s entirely possible to get a gorgeous new kitchen. The key is finding a great designer—someone who has a passion for excellence, an eye for creativity, and the ability to discover what will work best for you. Even projects with extremely high budgets can turn into disasters without a skilled professional to help guide design choices, while projects with more modest funds can have beautiful outcomes with the right help. I liked the look of Joyce’s Kitchen which is warm, roomy and elegant. Photographed by James Ray

Joyce’s kitchen extends a traditional welcome to kids and guests with fresh, easygoing style. Vintage materials, such as honed marble and limestone, mingle easily with scratchresistant engineered-wood cabinets, and stainless-steel appliances, Cabinets are classic in shape yet exaggerated in proportion, a unique contribution to the room. Joyce’s kitchen photographed by James Ray

This elegant white kitchen pops with a bit of color. From the turquoise to the hint of yellow in the plant boxes it gives a warm and inviting feeling. I love the wood flooring and the unique cabinetry design. The stainless steel appliances in the room fit right in and compliment the kitchen sink. This kitchen also featured a secondary sink on the island and lots of storage space in the pantry.

I’ve never been one to be afraid of trying something new and this year we’re going to spotlight strong, amazing women (young and old, black or white, or Asian or Hispanic) who we think wears ‘elon’ well. What is ‘e’lon’? It’s a strength that starts within and is seen on the outside. THE E’LON GIRL

Spring

MAKEUP

2013 Looks of E’LON BEAUTIFUL is how an E’LON girl lives. Believing in herself and in her power, she knows that beauty is what’s in your mind and not what’s in your mirror. And, an E’LON Girl knows how to say Yes and, just as confidently how to say NO. An E’LON girl is not defined by her age. She can be twenty-five or fiftyfive. The E’LON girl is elegance and chic. She’s urban and suburban. She loves makeup of course but does not need a lot of makeup to cover her only to define her. And her makeup style is grown-up makeup (she’d rather set trends than copy them). Her eyes are either a kohl-rimmed eye and bare lip or a red mouth and mascara. Beyond that, her face looks bare of any heavy foundation or powder. No hot pink lips, or trendy gold, or dark vampy colors.

I’m already eyeing some of the colors being offered for the spring. I’m in full makeup envy mode as I spot a beautiful copper and sherbet lip and eye combination on the color chart coming from E’LON. “We’re creating a new femininity in a new era,” I tell one of the models who has come to the studio for the photo shoot on this day. She catches a glimpse of herself in the mirror on the wall and her lips curl up in a smile. “That’s glamour,” I say to her. “Understated elegance at E’LON, and its back,” I say to her as we prepare for the shoot. “I like it and I haven’t felt this pretty in a long time, she says. “Thank you Ms. Yolanda.” As she left the studio that day, I looked for something that I could hang up in front of my makeup chair for every photo shoot – regardless as to whether as I was working on a model or a mom. I wanted to remind myself and them that E’LON is strength and a beauty that is timeless. I found it in these words. A strong woman is… one who feels deeply and loves fiercely. Her tears flow just as abundantly as her laughter. A strong woman is both soft and powerful. She is both practical and spiritual. A strong woman in her essence is a gift to the World.

HEALTH LIVING

Ready, set, succeed! Setting and keeping your slim-down get healthy resolutions for the New Year

It’s that time of year again and you’ve vowed to finally drop those extra pounds and get your eating habits under control. But, what’s to prevent this year from being any different than the more than ten years you’ve been setting the same resolutions each January only to have forgotten even where you wrote them down by February? First, don’t despair we’ve come up with a few stick to it tips that just might help you succeed this time around. 1. While you make your list make sure you put talking to your doctor on your list BEFORE you begin your diet. There may be issue actually contributing to your weight gain, such as depression, stress, medication that can’t be fixed with a simple cut in calories.

2.

Make sure you set realistic – and

measurable- goals. Don’t simply say, “I’m going to lose 20 pounds.” Instead say, “I’m going to jog twice a week and lose 2 pounds every two weeks.” This is both realistic and measurable. When goals are real they are accountable.

3.

Don’t go it alone. Have a support system

or a buddy who keeps your motivated and/or goes along on the weight loss journey with you. Having someone even a personal trainer or a nutritionist can help you stay motivated and really helps towards being successful at weight loss.

4. Go slow.

Don’t be in a hurry to get into

that next size down overnight. Losing more than a pound or two every week or two is usually a sign that you’re losing more water than excess fat. This can leave you fatigued and more than likely to gain the weight back. Continued on page 105 E’LON Magazine /

5. Keep a journal.

Writing down the journey not

only helps you to become disciplined in sticking to your weight-loss plan, but you may also be able to detect patterns in behavior for when you eat and what you eat. Do you eat late at night? Do you eat when things are stressful? Do you skip breakfast? These can all be patterns that we are unaware of and that can lead overtime to weight gain.

6.

Be a creative cook. Just because you’re dieting

doesn’t mean you have to eat bland and boring food choices. That is really the fastest way to sabotage your diet. Look around and grab different spices and herbs to liven up your chicken, or add a new fruit or vegetable to your salad or as a side dish.

9. I remember my mom saying this to me when I was younger, “eat slowly and chew your food.” Well who know that there’s a lot of reasons why. Not only do you enjoy your food but it takes about 15 minutes for your brain to realize you’re full – this way you eat less.

10.

Since you have measurable

goals you can track your progress. Reward yourself when you achieve milestones like 5-10-15 pounds. Get a massage or have your nails done or any other non-food reward.

7.

Exercise is a key component to weight loss,

but if you’re like me I hate working out. So, I’ve found some clever and fun ways to work out and stick to my plan. While doing house work I dance with the broom, mop and vacuum. I run up the stairs rather than walk. When playing with the kids I add in a few race walks and jump rope games. I’ve also found I enjoy a great game of Tennis and ballroom dancing.

8. Know that you will falter.

Happy New Year!

Don’t beat yourself

up because you eat something or forget to exercise.

OUR LAST WORD…. OUR BEST WORD

Out with the old

THIS PAST YEAR I have learned many lessons about life, family and friendship. What I like best about the beginning of a New Year is that special moment we all take to pause and ask ourselves, did we do all we set out to do during the year? Am I the person I had set out on the road to become? And did I move life for myself and others farther along that road. I discovered this past year that I could move beyond the comfort of a life I had known for more than twenty years and make a new start with new friends and new family members (my second granddaughter came into the world at the end of last year). I find myself this year not just wanting to set resolutions about what my year ahead will be, but also making amends and atonement to close out the

past. While that may mean atoning to other people (and I would be the first to admit that is on my list of things to complete in the New Year), I’m really thinking about atoning to myself. Atoning for not eating right and caring for this body I have been given. I am thinking about the atonement I must do for being too busy during those times when I heard the Creator whisper my name. I think about atoning for letting my gifts and talents slowly slip away from me while I sat silently in the dark pain of my own pity party. The dream of E’LON began more than twentyeight years ago with the birth of my daughter Sascha – whose middle name is Elon. As we enter a new era of strength and courage, I also make atonement to her. As I pick up the pieces of this legacy which I started for my daughter those many years ago, I am moving boldly forward in this new era to help her leave a legacy for her own daughters. A part of that new legacy for us is to embrace and showcase the beauty, the strength, the courage and the fortitude of the human spirit. To recognize the beauty of life’s rainbow of people around the globe and to have the conversations that move our lives forward. In this new era at E’LON and in my life, I recognize the part of me that has learned to say yes to life, and that part which has learned to say no – to myself and more importantly to others. Here at E’LON we are excited about a year that will bring new vision and new purpose with clarity. We are open to new ideas and welcome new voices. Why not join us in this new era of possibilities to see what we have in store and to hear what the world is saying about throwing out the old and welcoming in the new. We are so glad to have you along on the journey.
