Saturday, April 21, the Roadrunner baseball team beat the 5th ranked team in the state, Mt. SAC, in an exciting comeback, taking the win 7-6 at their home field, The Jungle. The game started out strong for the Roadrunners, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, while Mt. Sac was only able to put one run up on the board. Their momentum carried them into the 2nd inning and starting pitcher Edmundo Fernandez kept the Mounties from gaining any runs leaving the score at 3-1, with the Roadrunners up going into the top of the 3rd. During the inning, Mountie Anthony Walters had a solo home run that made it a 2-3 game going into the bottom of the inning. The Roadrunners weren’t able to answer back to the run and the energy shifted to the Mounties going into the top of the 4th inning. Mt. SAC’s 3rd baseman, Michael Sandoval put up four runs for his team with a homerun he hit with the bases loaded, giving the Mounties the lead at 6-3. With the shift of the momentum going in favor of their opponent, Rio Hondo worked hard together to gain back the lead. They were unable to get a run during the bottom of that inning and things started to look south for the Roadrunners. Reliever pitcher Andy Garcia was brought in at the top of the 5th and did his job for his team and kept the Mounties from getting a run in during that inning. His game plan going into that inning was to get outs and force ground balls to help his offense get out and get ahead. Rio Hondo came out swinging at the bottom of the 6th inning. Crucial hits by Josh Sabajan and Lucas Rocha brought in two runners for their team putting them one run away from tying up the game. With a 6-5 score the Mounties started to sweat and tensions began to run high. Continued on page 15

MICHAEL KHURAIBET/EL PAISANO NEWS It took emergency responders an hour to contain the flames along the 60 freeway April 18, which burned up an acre of land.
A wildfire broke out the afternoon of Saturday, April 21 in the Whittier Narrows Reservoir in Montebello. Traffic piled up on Rosemead Boulevard as dozens of spectators lined up along the guard rail to take pictures. The smoke billowed along the horizon, visible for miles in any direction. Jocelyn Saldivar, a student at Rio Hondo, was with her family as one of the many vendors that sell produce and drinks along Rosemead. “I was sitting here helping my sister, and we saw a little bit of the smoke coming out,” Saldivar said. “It just grew, and now the flames are all the way up.” According to ABC 7, the fire burned over an acre and a half of land. Firefighters in both trucks and helicopters were on the scene within five minutes, according to eyewitnesses. The fire started around noon. However, because of how quickly it spread, it took firefighters over an hour and a Continued on page 4

Los Angeles Decriminalizes Street Vending City Of Montebello Clears Project To Build New Condominiums RODOLFO PINEDO Reporter

After years of debate, street vending has finally been legalized in Los Angeles. The vote ended 11-4 with the Los Angeles City Council moving to direct the city attorney to draft a proposed sidewalk vending ordinance. However, the council will return for a second and final vote in a month or two. Before voting began, street vendors crowded in the chambers asking for legalization of their businesses. Some members asked to keep an option alive that would have allowed nearby brickand-mortar businesses to have the power to veto vendor licenses. The approved directive includes an appeals process that would permit adjacent
property owners to voice concerns and submit appeals to proposed sidewalk vendors based on health and safety issues. “The appeal should be based on health and safety. There’s some legal reasoning behind that because it gets too arbitrary if we just leave it for any reason,” Councilman Jose Huizar said. The city council vote was to establish a pathway forward for legislation, and to work out some basic framework issues as well that have been plaguing the conversation years beforehand. The main concern for advocates was the idea of a business veto. The issue was proven so tense that seven female protesters from the LA Street Vendors Campaign were arrested in City Hall last month while protesting against the measure.
There are new efforts to work out a compromise between business owners and the vendors about where and when they can operate together. A motion brought forwards by Councilmembers Joe Buscaino, Curren Price Jr., and Jose Huizar to leave out the business veto was ultimately approved and successfully voted on today, and now Huizar and others have 60 days to create a draft ordinance for what form the legalization of street food vending will take. Los Angeles continues to be a self proclaimed ‘progressive city’, as it has become a sanctuary city, offered massive homeless aid, changed columbus day to Indigenous Day, raised wages at a moderate pace with more paid sick leave, and now decriminalized street vending.

The City Council of Montebello approved the housing program on Wednesday April 11-a project that would fill a half-acre lot with 17 condominiums off Washington and Montebello. It was heavily favored by majority of Montebello’s council members, but not without issues of parking and open space being raised. The Condos are expected to be built on 1029 Montebello Blvd. The address currently holds a single home, and so, transforming that half-acre property to house multiple occupants is the next step in creating more affordable housing in the city. The area is already known for its mixture of single family homes, multi-unit complexes, and commercial businesses. The City of Montebello is on a push to approve multiple construction projects to improve Montebello’s property economy. Some of the other projects on the table include: two six-story buildings, added retail space, and another set of 28 condominiums. The city’s goal is to obtain an additional $360,000 in annual tax revenue. The 17 condo project was approved by the majority but
was still criticized by multiple council members. Councilman Bill Molinari was the only member to vote against the project over concerns with space. He stated,“You could shorten up that long building — it looks like an army barracks — and allow for open space. Where are the children supposed to play, on the driveway? It needs open space, a play yard or a barbecue.” Former Councilwoman Rosie Vasquez also disagreed with the project due to lack of space. With only 40 parking spots being added, that leaves very little room for an open area for activities. Despite these concerns, Mayor Vanessa Delgado is still for the idea of creating more affordable housing in her city. “One of the most important issues in the state is affordable housing - This density is appropriate.” As the project goes forward, the city is expected to create a planned development and tentative tract map to see it through that the condos are completed. The city conducts public hearings every 2nd & 4th Wednesday of each month in which any resident can attend to voice their concerns or thoughts.
LA Times Offices Move to El Segundo JAIME APARICIO Reporter jaime.aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu
After 18 years of being owned by Chicago-based Tribune company, The Los Angeles Times will now be locally owned once more and be moving to another home location under new management. Now having been purchased by billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong, the Los Angeles based newspaper will reside in El Segundo, 19 miles further from its original location. “We need to build a campus that is there for the next 100 years, not to lease a building,” explained SoonShiong to his new employees during a staff meeting. But not all staff members are too thrilled about the location being located on the opposite side of the 405 freeway from where The Times used to call home. During the initial meeting between staff members and the new owner of the newspaper, Kimi Yoshino, a current staff writer at The Times tweeted out about her co-worker’s reaction: “Walked back into newsroom after Patrick Soon-Shiong announces [The LA Times] will move to El Segundo -- and everyone has Google Maps open on
their screens, calculating new commute times.” The LA Times used to reside in an old 1935 art deco building near City Hall which made it easier for staff members to cover localized news about their home city. With the lease of the building reaching its expiration date of June 30, the purchase of the newspaper was made at the beginning of the year in February. Though the news has already broken out to the public about the new ownership, The New York Times reports that the deal “has not been finalized” just yet, and that “negotiations have dragged.” The LA Times will continue to report the news to the city of Los Angeles from their new location at 2300 E. Imperial Highway that sits on 4.5 acres and includes an eight-story, 120,000-squarefoot building. An event space, storefronts, and a museum of sorts that will feature a gallery of the newspaper’s 136 year history will help fill out the building’s first floor and is rumored to be open for public. The Onni Company was reported to ask for an increase in rent in the amount of $1 million dollars a month.

Rio Hondo hosted its first ever Dreamers Conference inside the Campus Inn April 20 from 8:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. The conference was created in order to show support for undocumented students andthe dreamer population. At the conference there was a Dreamer Panel in which undocumented students spoke out about their educational experiences and the struggles they faced while growing up undocumented. After the students shared their experiences Immigration Attorney Yesenia Acosta spoke at the Dreamer Panel about the laws and policies regarding immigration. Acosta discussed the current bills such as the DREAM ACT, USA ACT, Goodlatte Bill, Four pillars, and DACA. She encouraged people to be educated on the immigration process and to get out to vote and organize. Keynote Speaker Ernesto Rocha, membership director at Community Coalition in South LA, gave a motivational speech about his struggles growing up undocumented, and also reflected how he did not let his status affect him in his endeavors. He mentioned his TED talk “I am not my status.” “The reason I called it ‘I am not my status’ is because I really am not. I mean, it’s just a part of me but it’s not the whole thing that I am. I begin my TED talk by saying we all have at one point or another fallen victim to identities and stereotypes that really are not worth our brilliance.” After Rocha’s motivational speech, there was a rally unity walk in which students walked outside of the Campus Inn while holding up signs and walking out close to the Science building. Educational Workshops such as “We Have a Voice,” “Your Health Comes First,” “Financial Aid,” and “ Your Rights” were hosted right after the rally unity walk. The rally unity walk was done to show support for those who are undocumented. The topics that were covered dealt with learning to become advocates for yourself, knowing your rights regardless of immigration status, financial aid that undocumented students can qualify for, and learning how to take care of your health. When the workshops were finished, lunch was served at the Campus Inn and free private consultations with attorneys were made available.

The Disabled Student Programs and Services Department hosted their 2nd annual Roadrunner Recognition Awards April 12. The director of DSPS Mark Matsui explained that the awards were about recognizing the efforts of our faculty so every student can be just as successful. Before awards were distributed, Luisa Mesones, a DSPS student, gave a powerful student remark. She explained how she became diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and stage one breast cancer shortly after. She declined medicine and began finding alternative treatments. She then decided to return to school where she later learned about the program. Thanks to the helpful insight from DSPS faculty, Luisa is now nearing the end of her journey at Rio Hondo and calls herself, “A Rio Hondo Scholar.” The first Honoree of the afternoon was Theresa Freije, an English Professor at Rio who explained in her speech that she was, “Very dedicated and pleased to work
with DSPS,” she added, “It has been the highlight of my career.” Second was, Dianna Reyes, a Rio Alumni who became a counselor for the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services Department after working as a part time general counselor. Reyes spoke about her eagerness to learn more about DSPS students so that she could better accommodate and assist them when they come to her. She ended her speech by reminding the students and staff that they can continue to count on her support. The third honoree was Kevin Barman, a part of the Human Services Department who was unable to attend. Fourth was Kathy Gomez from the Reading Lab located in the Learning Resource Center building who was honored to receive an award. The final honoree was Mary Becerril who, “came in 1985, a young mother of 2 boys,” and now has worked in the Admissions and Records office for 32 years who stated, “I love my job, how many people get to say they love what they do.” The passion in helping the students was evident in
the speeches delivered by the honorees. Jacob Romero, a current Rio student gave another remark once the honorees had been acknowledged. Romero described himself as having a great work ethic, amazing communication skills, passion for serving others, and devotion as evidenced from his decision to take 15 units while holding the position of DSPS Student Council President. Showing that “despite challenges with disabilities anything can be accomplished.” He concluded his speech by stating his appreciation for the staff who continues to help and support students with disabilities. Closing remarks were given by Bonnilee Kaufman, an LD specialist, who explained the Olympic theme of the awards. She explained the difficulties of college and how easy that makes it to give up. The faculty and staff who work in the DSPS program or work along with them are like coaches to the students. “We are the olympic coaches and we are here to help make the playing field more equitable.”
The city of El Monte official council members have a series of upcoming projects and planned businesses for the city, one of them being the famous diner-style restaurant chain, Norms, which is being created on the corner of Valley Boulevard and Santa Anita Avenue. The Norms restaurant was part of a redevelopment project which the government temporarily took money away from because of a federal deficit. The owners of Norms sold to another buyer and the city council had to negotiate and settle a deal with the family that owned Norms. All of the council has been involved with the project, such as the city managers and the economic development department. The economic development department sit down daily and read the plans going over what is best for the city and bring it to the council. The ultimate decision makers in the city are the city council and the staff who do the negotiations. The residents of El Monte have constantly been reminding the council about creating the Norms restaurant for nine years. One of the main things that held back the Norms project was the caveat of “extremely outstanding circumstances.” Other projects that have been approved by the council such as the housing by the El Monte United States Postal Service, and the ones on Garvey, did not have the caveats to hold them back. Another unique project is the El Monte Veterans Village on Ramona which is housing for Veterans. This project housing houses 41 veterans and gives them on-site counseling. El Monte is one of the
few cities in the country with housing for Veterans. There is another Housing project underway on Baldwin Avenue and Rose Avenue for veterans with families. “We’re one of the fastest as far as building and economic development. El Monte is ahead of the pack in Southern California with projects coming up,” said Sheila Crippen, El Monte City Council Liaison and Public Relations Specialist. The Holiday Inn in El Monte on Valley Boulevard is a new project that is always filled to capacity every night which helps to generate a lot of revenue to the city because of the many tourists visiting El Monte and the surrounding areas. There is a housing project on Santa Anita by the 10 Freeway and the Metro Station. “We want people to stay here,” said Jerry Velasco, El Monte Councilman. “We want people to move in to the city and make it affordable also. We also have USC Medical Center here and thousands of doctors and nurses that live far from the medical center. By having this affordable housing that we are gonna be building here, hopefully they either rent or buy properties here and live in the city and build up the economy.” Projects that are currently underway include housing, markets, restaurants, entertainment, and much more. The city council plans to upgrade and develop the Valley Mall area in order to help out the community. “I think when I say that this council is excellent, I speak the truth”, says Crippen. “This council cares so much about this city.” Stay tuned for more upcoming projects in the city of El Monte.

Hackers Rob Casino Through A Fish Tank Therometer LUIS GUTIERREZ Reporter
luis.gutierrez0200@my.riohondo.edu
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION/ JAKE LAURELL With the internet being more involved with our lives the more privacy protection is becoming more vital in our modern world.
So you know that whole paranoia of someone always watching you via internet connection? And being scared that someone might be able to rob you by it? Well hate to tell you that is still the case and instead of you being robbed it was a unnamed casino! Well a group of London hackers managed to do this through a thermostat in the casino fish tank! It was through something they are calling “internet of things” that’s when you have everything connected through your internet. Things from your AC, CCTV cameras, and in this case a thermostat. So
pretty much everything you can think of that connects and relays on the internet. Nicole Eagle the head of a cyber security team Darktrace told the WSJ (Wall Street Journal) on thursday. “There’s a lot of internet of things devices, everything from thermostats, refrigeration systems, HVAC [air conditioning] systems, to people who bring in their Alexa devices into the offices. There’s just a lot of IoT. It expands the attack surface and most of this isn’t covered by traditional defenses.” Then went on to give an example and used the casino and the fish tank. “The attackers used that to get a foothold in the network. They then found the high-roller database and then pulled that back across the
network, out the thermostat, and up to the cloud,” Robert Hannigan who ran the British government digital spying agency from 2014-2017, supported this claim by saying that hackers are targeting things of internet more and more. And it doesn’t take a genius to know that something as big as this, is horrible for big companies i.e casinos. He then went on the record to say “I saw a bank that had been hacked through its CCTV cameras because these devices are bought purely on cost.” So it’s going to be interesting to see, how big companies beef up there cyber security. Because hackers definitely love a challenge and like it or not they always find a way.
UK Government Delcares That it Would Too Expesive to Remove to Delete Millions of Police Mugshots GILBERTO ESPAÑA Reporter
gilberto.espana0348@my.riohondo.edu
A government has claimed that up to 20 million police mugshots of innocent people cannot be deleted because it would be too expensive. Up to 20 million facial images are retained six years after a High Court ruling that the practice is unlawful because of the “risk of stigmatisation.” Local forces would have to complete the
work “manually,” making the costs, “ difficult to justify,” a group of MPs investigating the controversy has been told. Home Offices has also admitted they have no idea how many people have successfully asked for their mugshots to be deleted. Norman Lamb, the chairman of the science and technology committee, has warned that the facial images raise “fundamental civil liberty issues.” This was discovered days after it was revealed that the Home Office
destroyed landing cards which could have helped Windrush arrivals prove their right to stay in the United Kingdom. Lamb, who is a liberal democrat stated “Innocent people should rightly expect that images gathered of them in relation to a crime will be removed if they are not convicted.” This is very important as police forces have increased the use of facial recognition at high profile events such as Notting Hill Carnival. Despite increasing facial recognition,
the Home Office urged forces to carry on retaining the facial images, promising new laws would follow. At least 20 million images are stored, which amounts to about one third of the UK population. Police have developed the ability to capture images using cameras in public places, as well as people arrested or questioned. Baroness Williams, the Home Officer minister responsible for biometrics, agreed to explain in writing why mass retention is continuing. In her
letter, it states that mugshots are stored on the computer system of an arresting force before being transferred to the police national database (PND). Many DNA and fingerprint records have been deleted under legislation brought in by the Coalition government which promised to “roll back the database state.” Ministers agreed last year, that people not convicted of any offense could apply to the police to have their images deleted.
Finding Planets is Hard So Lets Find Mountains Instead! LUIS GUTIERREZ Reporter
luis.gutierrez0200@my.riohondo.edu
Two astronomers may have figured out a way to see mountains and other shapes on exoplanet. Exoplanet is a planet that is outside our solar system that orbits a star. And to be able to see something that far is groundbreaking. A big reason why this is so game changing because seeing how certain lands are structured, and what kind they are such as volcanoes
and mountains. Could very well answer the question if life is or was ever on that specific planet. This is also known as the planets inner life. We currently know of about 3,700 planets, but that’s about it other than they’re just floating around. Most of them were dedicated but a slight light. And with this telescope we might be able to learn so much more. But the catch is this telescope might not be done for a few decades. We used something very
similar to help us find key items on Mars. As well as the structure of the land and shapes of certain mountains. This took about 20 hours that was spread across six months. Now imagine what we can do with an upgraded version of this. But even if customers manage to find out a planet’s bumpiness, there is still a whole lot more they’ll need. Things like the presence of liquid water, tolerable temperatures and an atmosphere, to interpret the implications for habitability.
PHOTO VIA NATURE By being able to see the mountain ranges or any potential volcanoes, astroromers can look for a vital part of the blocks of life.

Amazon Has Known About the Pee-Bottles OLIVIA VENEGAS
Opinion/Lifestyles Editor
olivia.venegas4091@my.riohondo.edu
Due to a recent investigative story on low-wage workers in the UK, the warehouse working conditions for Amazon have recently been in the spotlight. The story revealed the pressures Amazon workers face by always having to meet their quotas and because of this, these workers believe they have no other choice than to pee in a bottle, to avoid getting in trouble of wasting time. Amazon released a statement shortly after the story was out saying, “Amazon ensures all of its associates have easy access to toilet facilities which are just short walks from where they are working”. This is not an issue that only occurs in the UK, Amazon workers in the U.S. also feel the pressure result-
ing in them having to use the “pee-bottle”. It is also an issue for Amazon drivers. Jon Vee, a delivery driver for Amazon shared his experience of the pee-bottle situation, “One of the reason we [Amazon drivers] have to use the ‘piss-bottle’ is because of the workload that is given to us by Amazon, sometimes its unreasonable.” Vee explains his day-today task as a delivery driver and the measures he has taken to avoid having to use the bathroom multiple times at on the job. After his first few weeks working there, Vee learned to eat lightly before his shift and to not drink a lot of fluids. Although it is not something that is enforced by Amazon, Vee learned what he needed to do in order to finish his routes on time. Even if with lightening his daily food intake, there are still times where Vee has to use the “pee-bottle”,
“Honestly in the last two months there’s only been one or two shifts I have not used the bottle. We have to use the bottles to save time just to complete the routes.” When asked about the warehouse workers, Vee explained that these workers are constantly on a schedule and even their bathroom breaks are to the minute. Those who go over their bathroom break times are in fear of getting written up or fired. Surprisingly, Vee revealed that the bosses at his location are aware of the “pee-bottle” situation before the story from the UK got out. “They know we do this all the time and they still discourage us from doing it and want put the idea in our head that we will be penalized for doing it even though they knew we do it and that it’s kind of necessary sometimes.”
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s Ex-Advisor Tricks Companies Into Investing Over $250 Million

Elizabeth Pierce, former CEO of FCC lead-man Ajit Pai’s Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee (BDAC), has been arrested for wire fraud after using “forged guaranteed revenue contracts” to trick companies into investing over $250 million in a fiber-optic company. The news came April 12, courtesy of a press release issued by the Department of Justice. The U.S. Attorney for
the Southern District of New York, Geoffrey S. Berman and a New York FBI Assistant Director, William F. Sweeney Jr. are the men who charged Pierce with the crimes. In the press release announcing the arrest, U.S. Attorney Berman said: “To realize her plan to build a fiber optic system that would service Alaska and connect it to the lower 48 states, Elizabeth Ann Pierce allegedly convinced two investment companies that she had secured signed contracts that would supposedly generate hundreds of millions of dollars in guaranteed future revenue from the system.” Pierce had been running the scheme since May 2015, providing the two investment companies with forged contracts. The scheme would have kept going on, but one of Pierce’s customer caught on. “It’s important for stakeholders to maintain a certain level of awareness into how their investments are being managed,” the FBI agent, Sweeney Jr. stated. “In this case, thanks to a customer who was paying close attention to their invoices and noticed something was
up, Pierce’s alleged scheme began to fall apart. The false agreements she tried to pass off as legitimate didn’t add up. In the end, her alleged crime was discovered.” Besides being the CEO of the BDAC, Pierce was the first chair of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) broadband committee. Pierce resigned from her CEO position in September 2017 for “personal reasons.” As FCC Chairman, Pai had worked closely with Pierce and believed she had been doing an “excellent job” up until her resignation. Now, with the charges she has been dealt with, the 54-year-old Pierce could be facing up to 20 years in prison. U.S. Attorney Berman praised the FBI’s work with cracking down on Pierce, and FBI agent Sweeney Jr. believes Pierce’s case shows the federal bureau takes these things seriously. “[Pierce’s] charges highlight our commitment to detecting financial crimes of all kinds,” Sweeney Jr. said, “and protecting those victims who invest their hard-earned money with those looking to make an easy profit.”

Is Your Information Safe? Over 48 Million Online User Profiles Leaked RAMON ALVARADO Editor-in-Chief
ramon.alvarado7328@my.riohondo.edu
Are you sure your information is safe on the ‘net? Forty-eight million user profiles from the likes of Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn had their information leaked, without their knowledge or consent, by a little-known data firm back in February of this year. The incident just came to light this past Wednesday, April 18. The Washington-based Localblox is the firm that slipped up and left millions of users’ private info out in the open. Localblox is a company that has access to multiple sites’ user profiles. Crunchbase, a website that helps find innovative companies, says Localblox “is a technology company that builds highly scalable neighborhood platforms, aggregating 27M+ business profiles with rich meta data, millions of active events, crime incidents, neighbor profiles and news from thousands of sources - all updated and augmented real-time and mapped into 112K neighborhoods.” The Localblox leak came after they uploaded a 1.2 terabytes file (enough to hold 200,000 songs or 500 hours of movies) with 48 million user profiles into a unsecured
Amazon cloud storage account. The file was unlocked and free to be downloaded by anybody who came across it. Chris Vickory, a director of cyber risk research at Upguard, a security firm, found the data. After finding the information in late February, Vickory informed Localblox’s chief technology officer, Ashfaq Rahman. Rahman wasted no time getting his team to fix the problem. The file was secured within hours of Vickory’s finding. This isn’t the only news of private information being given to firms this year. In March of this year, a New York Times report showed that in 2016, Cambridge Analytica gained over 50 million Facebook users’ private information. The firm had been hired by President Donald Trump’s campaign team and had “offered tools that could identify the personalities of American voters and influence their behavior.” This finding is till being investigated. With firms from Localblox to Cambridge Analytica having access to online user profiles, it seems like private information can leak and wind up in anybody’s hand at any given moment. With the social media-crazed time we’re in, internet users have to be as careful as ever.

It seems that after Ready Player one Mr.spielberg is finally ready to get into the superhero scene. He is once again teaming up with Warner Bros. To produce Blackhawk. For those who are unaware of Blackhawk he is a comic book character from DC Comics. Who was introduced in 1941 by Quality Comics who then got bought out by DC in 1957. His story follows him as he leads a group of elite pilots in the Black hawk Squadron in World War 2. It’s a no brainer that Warner Bros. Would do whatever they could to keep him

because of his latest movie Ready Player One, which grossed 476 million worldwide so far. And they seem pretty happy that he’s staying because Toby Emmerich a chairman said “We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure”. But don’t get to excited about this because it’s going to be a while before this movie begins production. He’s currently preparing for Indiana Jones 5, and then he has gone on the record to say after that he’s going to be making West Side Story. But in the meantime this talented director will keep us entertained with his other projects.
Netflix New Anon Will Intriguely Confuse You LUIS GUTIERREZ Reporter
luis.gutierrez0200@my.riohondo.edu
So of course the massive entertainment media company that is Netflix is on high roll of making content for us. There newest one that’s set to come out May 4th looks very interesting. It stars Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried. In a sci fi action packed movie. The basic plot of the movie is people live in a day an age where everything is being monitored. The government can see everything you’re doing via a stream from your eyes(kinda like Black Mirror) and crime has dropped drastically because of it. But someone manages to hack this system and begins to make people see things that aren’t there and
cover up all sorts of crimes such as murder. This movie definitely looks like it’s worth watching because it’s a mixture of sci fi and somewhat of a spy movie. The trailer leads you to believe one thing and then shoots a whole nother thing at you. Plus seeing the camera work from a traditional movie and POV (Point of View) is definitely going to be extremely entertainment to watch play out. You don’t really see too many movies do POV anymore and if you do it’s very short lived. But this movie looks like the POV angle is going to play a huge part in it. This is just one of many films that Netflix plans to roll out this year. And if they all look as good as them one seems to be, thousands of people are in for a treat.

Sequel Delayed Due to A Netflix Show VINCENT FRANCO Reporter

It’s been five years since the epic zombie/mutant Thriller, World War Z, has come out in the United States, And hopes for a sequel have been shot down multiple times. With new Chairman and Ceo of paramount, Jim Gianopulos, it’s said that an official green light should be on it’s way anytime soon. Production for the movie was set to being in the Early Months of 2018, but as those quickly came to an end, there still was no movie. Early 2018 turned into Fall of 2018 and still no sign of anysort of progress. With Brad Pitt set to still star in the movie, and considering the $540 million the movie grossed last year, this shouldn’t be that hard of a decision. To add to that a new director has been announced to man the cameras. Director, David Fincher, Famously known for movies like Se7en, Zodiac, and The Social Network, is going to be behind the cameras if this movie ever gets past some road blocks. According to Variety Brad Pitt was able to convince Fincher to take charge of this project, although Fincher doesn’t believe in sequels. Even with Fincher on board, the script for the movie is still in the draft stages. To add to that FIncher already has prior commitments with Netflix Original Series “Mindhunter”. While Fincher’s stuck in Pittsburgh for the production of season two, the constant delays, and without an official title, who knows what could happen.

Laundry & Bourbon Rio Hondo Review OLIVIA VENEGAS
Opinion/Lifestyles Editor
olivia.venegas4091@my.riohondo.edu
This Last weekend at the Black Box Theater, Rio Hondo College Performing Arts Department presented two plays by American playwright, James McLure. Laundry & Bourbon and Lone Star. The two plays show a husband and wife from a small town in Texas having a rough patch in their relationship after Roy, the husband, returns from Vietnam. Laundry & Bourbon takes place in the back porch of Elizabeth and Roy Caudler’s house. Elizabeth, played by Megan De Lara, and her best friend Hattie, played by Tyler Villa share gossip and talk
while folding laundry and drinking bourbon. We find out that Roy has been gone for days and has not been the same high school hero he was since returning from the Vietnam war. They soon have an unwelcome visit from the self-righteous Amy Lee Fullernoy, played by Emily Velazquez. Amy Lee reveals to Elizabeth that Roy was seen with another woman just the other day. We have also learned that this is not the first time Roy has been unfaithful to his wife, yet she stays because she believes Roy needs her. Elizabeth sits out in the back porch waiting for her husband to finally come home to share complicated news with him.
Since the story takes place in a small town in Texas during the time of the Vietnam War, the characters stereotypical small town country folks who were popular in high school and find their lives not all how the imagined. Elizabeth is a silly woman that loves and support her husband, Roy, who cheats and misuses her. Hattie was more dynamic character, in my opinion. She was a wife, mother, and a sharecropper’s daughter. Hattie experiences racism and prejudice against her and her family for being black and is not afraid to fight. The actress, Villa, who played Hattie adopted to the role and the accent well and gave, what I believe, to be one of the best performances.
After a 15 minute intermission, the next play Lone Star started. It takes place outside the back door of a bar where we are finally introduced to the infamous Roy Caulder, played by Jonah Collazo, and his younger brother Ray Caulder, played by Elijah McWherter. Roy shares stories of Vietnam and reminisces on his high school days where he was a big shot especially with his 1959 pink Thunderbird. A little after, Cletis Fullernoy played by Jace Alexander, comes into the scene as a former nerd of high school that Roy does not like at all. Roy leaves to enter the bar, Cletis shares to Ray that he actually crashed the Thunderbird. He asks Ray if he could take the blame so
Roy would not kill Cletis. Roy soon comes back into the scene and Cletis leaves. Ray reveals to Roy that he actually had an affair with his wife and then later tells him of his Thunderbird. The character of Roy was not a character I was fond of. He is the human embodiment of toxic masculinity through the ways he expresses his emotions only with anger and his sense of entitlement. Everyone from the small town glorifies Roy to be this biggerthan-life person even though he no longer feels on top of the world. Roy deals with his emotions the wrong and gets angry when other grown men show any other emotion other than anger.
West Coast Style Hip-Hop Performance in Covina CESAR GONZALEZ Reporter

The Covina Performing Arts Center located in the downtown area of Covina on the corner of Citrus and Badillo is the location where a local west coast hip-hop event took place. The Covina Theater which has been around since the 1920s maintains its classical theatrical feel. Since recent renovations, the theater has been restored as a performing arts center once again. One up and coming artist named Saint, who is based in Whittier along with his crew called Lime-light Productions, hosted an event that was open to the public on the night of April 19. Saint had since then been touring in Northern California and Texas for SXSW (South by South West). He also made features in other parts of Los Angeles before completing his southern California portion of the tour. A $10 entrance fee also got you an official copy of the album itself. The event is for an album release party to celebrate Saint’s “Too Boozed Too Cruuz” album with 12-tracks that feature Saint along with his producers Caesar Romero, Leo Zarucky, and Tony Baker
“I wanted to pick something that has meaning as far as something other than what I might rap for, ust something that has meaning overall because music is something of self-expression; people have a lot of self-expression.” - Rapper Saint Stern. The roster for the show’s lineup included names like Mondoe, Loose Cannons, Maaly Gaddaffi, Pack N Gonjah, Imagine, Avedvmian, and Lady Bosstress. The headliners of the show included Saint and Luckyiam3.0, who is both a member and the founder of the well-respected underground hip-hop group, the Living Legends. Every artist delivered their own personal style of rapping, each with their own familiar sound. One artist in particular named Imagine, is a huge hip-hop supporter although he believes his music is a bit different. Saint and his crew do a lot of music locally but when he tours he chooses to do so state by state. “I wanted to pick something that has meaning as far as something other than what I might rap for,” Saint
commented, “just something that has meaning overall because music is something of self-expression; people have a lot of self-expression.” Saint goes on to say, “Whether it’s happy, sad, mad, joy, I just wanted express something in a way that’s not what everybody else is talking about. Pretty much the Saint of rapping, with whatever feeling of your feelings to stand together with people as a whole.” Saint was a teenage high school student when he first started creating music. “As far as when I started, it was probably around the age of 15 or 16, and it was like ‘hey I have a computer with a shitty mic and we started off with Garage Band,” Saint said. It was his drive to get his message and his music out there for people to listen to that helped set the bar
for his motivational goals of producing and making music. Saint never game up. “It’s all about doing something…like you want to bake a cake? Well I’m having a birthday party,” Saint stated, “The point is to put it out there.” Growing up on 90’s old school hip-hop, Saint’s biggest inspiration comes from the rap artist Eminem. “I used to bang Eminem,” Saint said, “My parents used to throw out my Marshall Mathers LP every time they found it they would toss that shit out.” The 90s hip-hop scene and culture heavily influenced Saint as an artist when it came down to the inspiration of his music. Saint goes on to say that there are too many influences to narrow it down to just one. “2000 and below artists I believe are the legends who helped influence me,” Saint said.
When it comes to making music, one thing Saint mentioned he loves most is being heard. “I love being heard, I love that somewhere somewhat someone has a mutual interest in they listen and respect the same shit that you just said,” Saint said, “That’s what I love.” Saint has one very important message for the youth of this generation that are also attempting to join the music industry, “Don’t listen to anybody, do your stuff, if you believe in it, invest it in,” Saint said, “You have to faith in yourself, and you have to invest in yourself.” More information about the Saint and his crew can be found on Instagram at Saintsworld57, Spotify, and Soundcloud by searching Saint57. All the artists mentioned above can also be searched on Soundcloud as well as Instagram. Spring Faculty Concert Here At Rio DIANA JUAREZ Reporter

The Rio Hondo spring faculty concert took place last Tuesday April 17 at the Wray Theater. Professor Frank Accardo, his wife Donna, and Professor Jannine Livingston serenaded the crowd with chamber music and a surprise West Side Story instrumental performance at the end. Donna and Professor Livingston played violin and piano respectively and opened the concert with a somber and desolate interpretation of Mercy by Max Richter. They
dedicated the performance to the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre that left 14 students and 3 staff members dead. “This will be our reply to violence: To make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before,” read a quote from Leonard Bernstein in the concert’s program. Sonatina Op. 205 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco was a lighthearted performance by the Livingstons on guitar and piano respectively. The rest of the performances had their lulls, but overall the
night was fun. It was obvious from every seat in the Wray that the performers really enjoyed themselves. The people in attendance ranged from students to community members and a couple of faculty. “This is a great thing to do for everyone,” said Teresa Sandoval, “free concerts are not always easy to come by and it’s important for me to have the opportunity to show my daughter the beauty of chamber music.” Rio Hondo College offers events like these throughout the semester so keep a lookout for them and make sure to attend and support the arts.

The 22nd annual LA Times Festival of Books took place at USC this past week-
end, April 21 and 22. Rio Hondo’s very own Professor Mariano Zaro attended the festival, representing Beyond Baroque, a non-profit organization and one of the United States’ leading independent Literary Arts Center. Born and raised in a little town near Zaragoza, Spain, professor Zaro teaches Spanish at Rio Hondo as well as being an accomplished poet and a member of the board of trustees for Beyond Baroque. Zaro is also a part of various writer’s groups. “I have four poetry books out, all bilingual, and four major anthologies,” said professor Zaro, “I have ‘The Coiled Serpent’ with Tía Chucha Press,
‘Wide Awake’ with Poets of Los Angeles and Beyond, and ‘Angle of Reflection’ which I published with other LA poets.” It was for the publishing of Angle of Reflection that professor Zaro read at the poetry stage at the LA Times Festival of Books last year. “Angle of Reflections is one of my more personal works, it’s definitely the one that’s closest to my heart because I wrote about my early childhood and growing up in Spain,” said professor Zaro. It came as no surprise that when asked what his favorite event at the festival was, professor Zaro replied, “oh, the poetry stage. It is a great place to see all these amazing
poets. There is something about the sound of someone reading their poems aloud that is very compelling.” “If I could say anything up aspiring writers of any kind is to check with yourself about what you have to say,” professor Zaro advises, “don’t say what other want. And be active, participate in workshops and contests. Writing can be a solitary activity and it is good to interact with other writers.” If you’ve never gone to the Festival of Books, mark your calendars for next year April 13 and 14, it’s a free event with attractions for everyone. The club members then took popular rock album covers and redesigned them with Santana’s song as the main title for each one. The song inspired them greatly which is why the project came about. “It’s a parody and it’s cool, we did it as a way to gives us something to do when we aren’t in school.” says Justin. “I wanted to create something that represented this type of art, I haven’t really seen art with all these pieces together,” said Sismanov Barron.
His project consisted of images of rock legends from the 60s and 80s; he took six of the top artists, such as Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, and other rock

Living in Fear, Here and There
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION/OLIVIA VENEGAS Terror happens in our own backyards, whether it’s in America or in Syria. Although Syria risks are far greater than our own, there is this commonality of fear. DANTE LOPEZ-BENNETT Copy Editor

I’m a civilian whose mother, like yours, is often found at the grocers on certain days of the week. I’m a civilian, like any other that sleeps at night despite all the fears and stresses of the day so that my mind can do like prideful warmongering generals and politicians can’t retreat to a place evolved from hate. My days are spent in school or at work. In clubs or bars at night, where a laugh is lent and a smile is borrowed despite the danger right at our doorstep. I was born here and in every sense of the way, have no understanding of another place to call home. It’s an environment that they say has seen better
days, though that’s unlikely as we’re smack dab in the middle of a desert where tacit tensions like temperatures have always been fit for combustion. Like a match made in hell, where the embers of conflict smother us regardless of our sexual orientation, political affiliation, or religious denomination. We, here, like any of you, there, are liable to the same fears and stresses. The animosity toward the man “responsible” for us whom most of us have never met is not imagined but an unfortunate reality around which we maneuver as best we can. We’re scared out of our minds at every moment of what the law of our land entails, though I suppose at the end of the day, that’s a characteristic reserved for any civilian born to any country.
We’re civilians confused at “western” denouncers seeking to push the Assad agenda aside at our lives’ expense like politicians across the world don’t scheme and connive just as equally everywhere. Like peace isn’t everywhere because man’s kind breeds ambitions that only create good fellas fit for office in want of control. We’re civilians who find it funny that the minute we’re in the scopes of superpowers whose ideologies differ from ours, so too, are we on the front pages of their newspapers and at the forefront of their government’s policies. I think the only difference between myself and most other civilians is that while they wish upon a shooting star, I now know no longer what my possibilities for the future are.
As an innocent civilian in Syria, it feels as though more than often by the international community, what with all their infallible rules, regulations, and ideologies, that I’m already condemned to death. Being an innocent civilian in Syria, it feels as though I can’t afford to do anything but support my war machine of a government, though, at the end of the day, this too is understood by you too. Contrary to popular belief we don’t get shot at every day or fall victim to bombings every day either, like say, the traffic stops, schools, and delivered packages of other countries. We don’t huddle up in the basement like we’re in fear of hurricanes or tornadoes. We live in a place, where resources are scarce. We live in a place where the prices of things only get
higher and higher. A place like any other, with nothing but time to be afraid of. Now if I were to tell you about the innocent civilians that dared to not abide by the rules of the land, the other massive percent of innocent civilians that live in the country of Syria in unrecognized lands though are still deemed rebel sympathizers, I wouldn’t know where to begin because I’m just a college student writing for a newspaper in the United States whose everyday life only mirrors that of the innocent civilian that has no choice but to follow the rules of my not entirely decrepit yet society, and not break them. Regardless of location, Damascus, ruin, or California, our lifestyles are all in need of a change.

As I currently speak, the United States is involved with over seven conflicts across the globe according to Quartz.com. Ukraine and Syria remain in chaos as the West and Russia compete in a proxy wars arming both sides of the civil wars. 2002 saw NATO continue to expand on Russia’s borders with Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia all being added to the military alliance and commitment from the US to protect these Nation’s sovereignty from a potential Russian threat according to RT.com. Constant increased turmoil around North Korea and the US along with all its allies in the South Pacific it seems that the doomsday clock being two minutes to midnight, according to the Seattle
Times, might be accurate. But it is a farce. The world is too connected and relies upon each other for too much that a world war on the scale of the ones we had previously would be catastrophic on a magnitude never seen before. The world and its economy is too connected and relies upon one another too much nowadays to realistically go to war with one another. Take your average laptop or cell phone that you most likely have. Your iPhone, Samsung Galaxy is made up of parts that all intertwined and part of the global manufacturing process. A lot of these rare earth minerals like copper, gold, platinum, and tungsten are mined in countries like China, with the plastics mostly being manufactured from crude oil from Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and Africa according to TechRadar.com. Just those two components alone are gathered from all corners
of the world let alone the labor part of the equation. Despite how it may seem because of the likes of social media, and the news, the world is actually experiencing significantly less death and fatalities from war according to Newsweek’s article named “Don’t worry: World War III will almost certainly never happen” examined Steven Pinker’s study. Pinker’s study concluded that across the board the world since 187 number of battle related deaths has dropped from over 70,000 deaths to under 50,000 in 2010. Besides how manufacturing has changed globally due to globalism and modernization of other nations since the end of World War 2, the world has so many trade agreements and treaties that our modern economy would cease to exist. For instance from the same article mentioned above
from Newsweek Russia trades oil and natural gas to large majority of Europe. If war was to break out between both side, Russia take a huge financial with Europe stuck having to search for new, less viable options to feed its ever hulking economy. Not to mention the extremely high insurance costs that come up with shipping goods or lack of basic materials needs in everyday life like, Iron, or even food can be shorten for possible war efforts. The US and Russia’s boxing match for sole superpower has gone from red streaking hot to lukewarm back to fiery stare off. But the one thing that kept the nukes flying from both sides at even during one of our worst standoffs, The Cuban Missile Crisis, was the idea of M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction). The military strategy and thought during the Cold War
that if either side attacked one another, the counterpart would retaliate in kind destroying all of humanity. For during the 1980s, The USSR had over 40,000, with the US having over 20,000 nuclear warheads ready to annihilate civilization reported by BBC magazine in an called “How did we forget about mutually assured destruction?” Now fast forward to today and nearly every major world power has nuclear weapons. WIth over 14,500 nuclear warheads still in use across the world from various of US, Russia, United Kingdom, North Korea, China, France, Israel, India, and Pakistan the world stands at the barrel of a warhead according to CNBC. com. And that maybe a good thing. For if any would be sides are the first to folly, the ramifications mean the end of human civilization on this small insignificant rock floating through the great dark.
Earth Day Schmurth Day We’re All Doomed Anyways OLIVIA VENEGAS Opinion/Lifestyles Editor

They tell us to turn off the water when brushing our teeth, bring your own grocery bags, water your lawn on certain days but this is not going to save our earth. Companies and others will pull up statistics to show you how much water a single person could save if they took a shorter shower. These numbers are nothing compared to the amount of water and natural resources that could be save if our society were to stop eating meat. Or even if we did not operate in a capitalist society. This secret has been untold and ignored for too long, and to let it further be this way is literally catastrophic. A person can recycle and turn off their water more often all they want, but the real solution that will create the most impact, since it has created the impact, is for companies and our society to stop being so wasteful. Tons and tons of water is
wasted every day to supply for your all-too-important In-N-Out craving. “Fifty-five percent of our fresh water is being given to livestock.” This number is from Dr. Richard Oppenlander’s book Comfortably Unaware: What We Choose to Eat is Killing Us and Our Planet Dr. Oppenlander is also featured in the Netflix documentary “Cowspiracy”. So much methane, which is “twenty-three times the global warming effect potential as carbon dioxide”, is produced and sent into our o-zone layer because of the meat industry. Methane and nitrous oxide are massively produced from the meat industry because of the flatulence and manure from livestock. Yes, cow farts are 23 to 310 times more power-
ful than greenhouse gases and is the main contributor releasing these gases into our o-zone layer. Think about how much meat is in our diets. Millions and millions of burger joints. Then there so many
other types of restaurants whose dishes are centered around meat. The high demand for meat results in a number of
livestock so massive it is 10 times the earth’s population. This disapprovingly large number seems necessary to the meat industry in order to me consumer’s very high demand for meat. “We collectively raise, feed, water, kill, and eat over 70 billion animals each year for food.” Where do we keep an amount of animals so large? For one, meat industry countries deplete natural resources, mostly in the Rain forest, to house these animals. “Over 30 percent of all usable total land mass on earth is used by livestock” The rain forest is not dying from one individual’s careless acts to litter, no it’s main contributor to its death is making room for cows and other livestock for mainly
Americans to later consume. “Seventy percent of our rainforests have been slashed and burned in order to raise livestock.” The death of rainforests is far more problematic than it appears to be. “Almost 50 percent of all types of living things (equaling five million species of plants, animals, and insects) reside in rainforests. Rainforests have depleted tremendously in the last 15 years. Less than 2% of the earth is composed of rainforests and rainforests are crucial to our planet because of their uniquely, diverse ecosystem. Big businesses after big business will continue to plow over these necessary ecosystems to fill their pockets and for nothing more than that. You as consumers could do your best to eat less meat, but overall the immediate elimination of meat in our society’s diets will help much more than one person ever could.

Colorism: An Introduction OLIVIA VENEGAS Opinion/Lifestyles Editor

Time and time again many of us have been in situations where a member of a minority says or does something racist against another minority. As tragic as it is, many of our own family members are guilty of it. Yet, when confronted, many of those same people will say they aren’t racists. How could they be racist when they themselves are a minority? The answer is colorism. Colorism was first stated by author and Pulitzer Prize winner Alice Walker. She said that colorism was: “Prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their color.” Racism and colorism, are connected but are used differently. The lighter the skin tone the better a person is believed to be. Kimberly Jade Norwood best states the difference between racism and colorism in
her article, ‘If You is White, You’s Alright…’ Stories About Colorism in America, “A clear example of racism would involve a business that refuses to hire Black people. Colorism would not preclude the hiring of a black person, but there would be a preference for a Black person with lighter skin tone than a darker skinned person.” People of color with lighter-skin tones are more widely accepted and valued in our society than those of darker-skin tones. This all started because of colonialism. Colonialism brought us the American Way/Dream. The values that Make America Great (Again) are mostly awful and not at all inclusive. Many countries around the world have embedded colonial ideologies into their societies. This means that foreign countries have adapted to European standards of beauty like valuing lighter-skin tones and believing they are more beautiful. Colorism occurs across races and affects women of color more than men. White people often prefer a lighter-skin African American rather than their dark counterparts in friendships
and in the media. Just look at the light-skin tone of Beyonce, and the first Black president of the U.S, Barack Obama. Their lighter-skin tones are not the exact reason for their success but it is definitely a characteristic that helped. Colorism is also gendered. All women are valued and judged based upon their appearance, and our society still follows the European standards of beauty, darker-skinned Black women will be seen as less valuable than lighter-skinned Black women. Author Norwood, a darker-skinned Black woman, recalls walking around town at young age with her mother, a light-skinned Black woman, and experienced strangers within her Black community, apologizing to her for not looking as “beautiful” as her mother due to her “nappy” hair and darker complexion. As a young girl, Norwood understood that her dark-skin was “ugly” and would spend days looking in the mirror “wishing I looked like my mother.” Colorism is rampant among the Hispanic and Latino communities as well. As stated earlier, those with
lighter skin tones are valued over others. Brazil, a country full of diversity seems to only boast European looking models. Gisele Bunchen, arguably the most famous supermodel in the world, is of German descent, yet the everyday Brazilian woman has a darker complexion. From songs (Capullo y Serullo comes to mind) to board games (loteria anyone?) and- even cake snacks (remember what “Nitos” used to be called?) Black people are depicted in these cartoonish ways that do nothing but harm their image in media and society. But colorism doesn’t stop there. Obviously other parts of the world are affected by it (women from India pay hundreds and thousands of dollars every year to bleach their skin) , but the United States seems to have a particular relationship with the concept. It wasn’t that long ago that Irish immigrants were placed on the same socioeconomic level as Black people. Next week, we will explore the history of colorism and how it has changed the way society views us and how we view and treat each other.

Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen, two southern California quarterbacks are set to get drafted into the National Football League this Thursday, April 26. Darnold and Rosen have been making noise in SoCal for a long time, and now they’re ready to show out on the highest level of football. Darnold and Rosen both grew up in southern California; Darnold is from Capistrano Beach, while Rosen is from Manhattan Beach. They were both stars in high school, though Rosen was the more praised recruit. Rosen went to St. John Bosco, a Catholic high school in Bellflower, California. During his senior year there, Rosen was named the LA Times Player of the Year and the Long Beach Press-Telegram’s Dream Team Player of the Year. Rosen was a highly touted quarterback and eventually found himself starting for the UCLA Bruins in 2015. As a freshman, Rosen started 13 games, throwing for 3,670 yards, 23 yards and 11 interceptions. The Capistrano Beach boy, Darnold wasn’t talked about as much as Rosen was coming out of high school, but he was still very successful. Darnold was named to the
All-CIF team his junior and senior at San Clemente High School. After redshirting his first year at the University of Southern California, Darnold was named the backup quarterback for USC. USC lost two of their first three games with Max Browne starting for the team, so Darnold was named the starter for the fourth game of the 2016 season. Darnold lost his first start, but went on to lead USC to nine straight wins, including a Rose Bowl victory over Penn State. In the 2017 Rose Bowl, Darnold completed 35 of his 59 pass attempts while throwing for 453 yards and, a Rose Bowl, five touchdowns. After his stand-out freshman season, Darnold became the number one NFL prospect. While Darnold was shining as a freshman at USC, a couple miles away, Rosen was sitting out his most of his sophomore year dealing with a shoulder injury. In his first game back from injury, the first game of the 2017 NCAA football season, the UCLA quarterback showed high why he, not Dranold, was the number one prospect before his injury. It was a home game for UCLA, taking on the Texas A&M Aggies. Rosen got off to a hot start and led the Bruins to a 45-44 shootout victory as he racked up 491 yards, four

touchdowns and a near-perfect 151.6 quarterback rating. The game was the start of a solid season for UCLA’s junior quarterback. Rosen finished the season with 3,756 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. In the meantime, Darnold took a slight step back in his sophomore year at USC. He threw nine interceptions in his freshman season, but racked up the same number just six games into his second college season. Darnold still held his spot as a top NFL recruit, tallying 4,143 yards, 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Shortly after the 2017 NCAA football season, Rosen and Darnold both declared for the NFL Draft. Darnold and Rosen are the top prospects at the NFL’s most prominent position, along with the University of Wyoming’s Josh Allen. Many NFL experts believe Darnold and Rosen will be two of the top three picks in the NFL Draft, though anything is bound to happen on draft day. No matter where they’re drafted to, there’s sure to be plenty of attention on the two SoCal beach boys, but it’ll be nothing new to them. Darnold and Rosen hail from two of college football’s most decorated programs and from star-studded Los Angeles. The two quarterbacks should be cool, calm and collected wherever they end up.

NOAH GARCIA/EL PAISANO NEWS The Rio Hondo baseball team bounced back from losing 2 of three games against the Chaffey Panthers by beating Mt. SAC, a team that’s ranked fifth in the state of California.
Roadrunner Baseball Defeats Mt. SAC continued
The Mounties grew frustrated at the top of the 7th during their up bats as they were met by the strong Roadrunner defense keeping them from advancing to home plate. Pitcher Andy Garcia commented on his strategies to keep the Mounties from scoring again, “I needed to make sure that all of my pitches were perfected and placed in the right spot to get ahead on
the hitters.” The score stayed at 6-6 throughout the 7th inning for both teams as they went into the final two innings. Mt. Sac came close to scoring as a runner on third sat and waited for their chance to come into home, but a hard driven grounder to the first baseman, Doug Allen, closed out the top of the 8th for the Mounties. The Roadrunners went into
the bottom of the inning with a strong energy from themselves and their fans within the stands. With one runner on base batter Lucas Rocha came up to the plate and hit a single, and made the decision to advance to second on the throw. As the Mounties focused on throwing out Rocha at 2nd, Sabajan was able to score, thus breaking the tied score 7-6. Going into the top of the
final inning the Roadrunners knew that they had to keep the Mounties from scoring and the win would be theirs. With Isaiah Ramos warming up in the bullpen Andy Garcia was determined to take the win for himself. He said that his mental preparation is all about focus. “I get focused to perform my best so when I go into the game I’m ready to get the outs.”
Mt. SAC worked hard to try and get some hits but with only nine hits throughout the game they were unable to answer back to the Roadrunners winning run. After Saturday, the Roadrunners overall record is 13-22. They now go into their final conference series against the Pasadena City College Lancers this week. The Roadrunners will look to close out the season on a positive note.
