EDITORIAL: For Your Eyes Only:
In this age of interconnectivity, is entertainment made purposefully addictive and at the expense of our humanity? DANTE LOPEZ- BENNETT Copy Editor
dante.lopezbennett9611@my.riohondo.edu
Where jokes were once to be made about the misunderstandings of the world, in this newest age, many would elect to rather run, duck, or hide before confronting the inevitable pain of God forbids- simply not knowing. Today’s instantaneous content and methods of contact demonstrate that in the twenty-first century, the whole wide world functions much like a nation-state where the only thing agreed on is that we must constantly move ahead. Faster ahead. Forward unto the ignorance that awaits our finite minds never minding that there’s no credible destination in sight. Sad to say, our interests grow quick and hedonistic about as stubborn as a sweettoothed kid at the table in protection of his Nesquik. We fiend for entertainment in a way that could have never been expected of the most passionate showmen of decades now past, and that as a fact in and of itself, is admittedly more than troubling. In a way only befitting of the lonely times we now encompass, where walls

are pent up daily in fear of conversing, one piece of art, in particular, has caught our fancy as an in-depth delve into the spirit of our times. Self professed b-list celebrity rapper Jermaine Lamar Cole’s forte for composing featureless platinum chart-topping albums, his most recent of which entitled “KOD,” is a feat telling enough of the predicament we find ourselves in as the subject matter is derived from the ways in which human nature is illequipped for the silent tussles of this era that play out in our minds. To be or not to be enticed by such simple things as photographs and flirt with infidelity. To have gain gratification and heart from double taps. These are but two reasons that beg the questions: In this age of interconnectivity, is entertainment made purposefully addictive and at the expense of our humanity? In this climate, yes. Rather than look one another in the eye, the only characters we’ve come into contact with as of late are the 140 or so that Twitter permits us to use. Rather than fall into love we trip into lust at the sight of photographs, and DM expecting a text back with the ferventness of any outpatient looking to the MD for the newest batch of painkillers. Now, we only make sense of things for the sole purpose of how conveniently they can be comprehended in the context of our immediate worldview. Simply put, we’ve begun to limit the things we experience to the people that are around us. With existential crises
and pharmaceutical company niceties have we all been made to settle for a world in which the lessons of pain should no longer have to be endured. With minute maid meals and microwavable music is a state as vegetative as death the one aspiration with which we mettle. Where there be no endurance and will to experience how magnificent the world can appear following pain and hurt, there too shall be the cessation of beauty. If they say the artist’s word is the most significant reminiscence worth having years from now alluding to the spirit of times now past, Mr. Cole’s twelve songs total, are all that were needed to capture the existential crises of the many who’ve begun to realize that the deadliest of afflictions are a direct byproduct of the ways we have begun to cut corners in our conversations. The ways in which we’ve robbed ourselves of the organic beauty that’s to be developed between one another. It pays to know that death by the marination of the mind in a stupor of convenience, is about as slow as democracy and miserable as time spent watching paint dry. To all the weary that ponder what more to do in search of solace, where the pain is inevitable, we’ve really ought to think of suffering as perhaps only optional. Rather than to find ourselves bogged down by convenience, we should opt to take the longer and more scenic of routes where glory is to be found in abundance.
Texas Shooting Brings Current Year Total to More Than 20 NOAH GARCIA News Editor
noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu
A shooting in Santa Ana Texas resulted in 10 deaths and 10 injured around 7:45 a.m. local time, May 18, 2018. The gunman, identified as 17yr old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, is a member of the student body, carrying out his attack with a shotgun and a .38-caliber revolver. The incident rounded out to be 20-20 minutes, with the attacker eventually being surrounded by over 200 state policeman in a classroom. After further investigation, the guns were claimed to have come from his father, although A law enforcement official told CNN that it was not specifically clear whether that’s the case. While a motive has been not clearly defined, his attorney, alongside his father, have placed the motive of the attacker being harassment from the student body as well as the adults on campus. His attorney, Nick Poeh, spoke to ABC news, on the nature of the investigation,
“This weekend Santa Fe ISD released a statement saying they had investigated the claims of bullying and found them to be not true … it is clear that they didn’t reach out to any of the kids that were on TV claiming that it occurred so we have some questions about that investigation.”Whether or not the attacker convicted of capital murder he will not be given the death sentence, regardless of the fact that he is legally an adult within the confines of the state of Texas. The number of school shootings have been numerous in not only the past year, but the last several ones. How News outlets, state programs and schools define a “school shooting” range from these institutions. CNN, that have propagating the idea of 22 school shootings this year, define a school shooting as “a shooting that occured on school grounds that involved at least one person being shot (excluding the shooter)” Regardless of how one defines a school shooting, it’s clear that there has frequency of such attacks in the U.S.

Despite harsh opposition from South Whittier residents a three-story, 128-unit apartment complex in Santa Fe Springs is on its way to approval. Whittier’s historic Five Points Car Wash was closed down earlier this year where the 128 unit apartment complex will now be. The Santa Fe Springs Planning Commission voted 5-0 Monday to approve the complex. The plans will now go over to the City Council, which must approve the zone change and amendment to the city’s general plan so the development may go forward. The property is owned by the South Whittier School District and is surrounded on
three sides by an area outside of Santa Fe Springs. No Santa Fe Springs residents live near the project site. The Whittier school district will maintain ownership of the land and lease it.But the main concerns for South Whittier residents is the loss of open space, added traffic, and potential parking problems from the complex, which will be built on a 5.1-acre field at 11201-11313 Carmenita Road between Carmela Elementary School and Carmela Preschool.Commission Chairman Gabriel Jimenez discussed the project’s benefits: “It will bring property values up on nearby homes. It will beautify the area.” He addressed traffic concerns by noting that a study included showed the apartment complex “won’t have much of an effect.”

Whittier Courthouse to Re-Open RODOLFO PINEDO Reporter
rodolfo.juarezpinedo2776@my.riohondo.edu
The Whittier courthouse located on 7339 Painter Avenue is re-opening its doors again Monday May 21. It’s been five years since it’s forced closure by the Los Angeles Superior Courts back in June 2013 due to budget cuts. Instead of handling criminal and civil cases, the refurbished courthouse is expected to only handle family law. Court officials, city leaders, and sheriff deputies attended a celebration of the courthouse’s reopening on Friday, May 12. It was one in eight courthouses in 2013 that was forced to shut down after an 85 million dollar budget cut. Since then, city leaders have been working
with leaders in the community to re-open the building that has been part of Whittier’s history since 1972. It was expected to be operational January 2018, but was delayed due to uncompleted construction and remodeling . Whittier Assemblyman Ian Calderon, is especially happy of the results after spending four years working on its opening. “Ever since its closure, I’ve met with officials from the county, Superior Court and colleagues in the state Legislature about the value of access to justice and to try to push the needle to increase court funding.” The building will be the only courthouse in the entire Los Angeles County that will devote its resources to only
Suicide Rates Rise in Doctors
DANIEL CAMPOS Reporter daniel.campos1604@my.riohondo.edu
Speaking solely in the US, a Doctor kills themselves every single day of the year. Post-mortem test results show that the reason behind the abnormal behavior is because of undiagnosed or untreated mental illness and depression. 34 out of every 100,000 Doctors will kill themselves according to a new report released through WebMD. During the American Psychiatric Association Conference of 2018, professionals spoke amongst themselves saying that physicians here in the homeland take their lives more often than physicians out in the military. A surprising fact is given that the amount of stress out on the battlegrounds are thought to be horrific and gory. Much like attorneys, some of the facts pertaining to suicidal tendencies are related to drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and inability to control moods from dealing with one patient to another, both in and out of the operating room and private offices. A single study showed that 12 percent of Doctors who are male and 20 percent of Doctors who are female exhibit symptoms of depression. Even less surprising is that 23 percent of med school students and in-house residents show signs of depression throughout their studying and early practicing period. In short, the people who are in these medical fields often seek to help others, all the while ignoring signs for help themselves due to
stigmas in the field and from peers. The most common type of exit? Self-poisoning and death by hanging. That particular study showed that because of inside knowledge of what substance does what, it’s easier for them to go about doing what they deem fit. The effects stem beyond med school and operating rooms. The psychology field is damn near at the top of the list of victims and to be clear, suicide is still illegal and shunned upon in many parts of this very Protestant country. Physician-assisted suicide has been making headlines for the past six years or so, and most recently an otherwise healthy 104-year-old male decided it was his time to go and he would seek the so called “easy way out.” Beth Brodsky, Ph.D., of Columbia University speaks openly of the issue and wants her words to be known as an exception to the rule. She says, “people do not commit suicide, but die by suicide and suicide is an illness and not a crime. ” She’s wrong, it is crime, and one that is definitely not taken lightly by those affected. Money has been allocated to assist medical professionals in need. Precautionary steps to move forward in protecting those who are trained to save lives. They too are human and can succumb to the rigorous schooling, training and rigid concern surrounding the medical field. If you or anyone you know are contemplating suicide you can call toll-free (800) 273-8255, the national suicide prevention hotline.

er. Instead of being forced to drive to downtown L.A. or Norwalk, now we have a courthouse dedicated to family services.” said Whittier Councilman Josue Alvarado. Some of the upgrades brought to the courthouse
include new roofing, energy friendly lighting and air conditioning, as well as new paint and exterior landscaping. The courthouse will also house a new children’s waiting room and a domestic violence clinic.

Rio Hondo’s Tesla START program now has its first batch of graduates. Ten students completed the 12-week course this spring and were recognized at a ceremony held in Rio’s automotive shop Wednesday, May 23. Upon completion of the START program, the ten graduates were hired at various Tesla locations in California and one in Arizona. Dean of Career Technical Education at Rio Hondo, Mike Slavich led off the graduation ceremony. He gave a few short words before introducing school Superintendent/ President Teresa Dreyfuss. Dreyfuss took a few minutes to congratulate the ten students for becoming the first to complete the program in school history, and second in the company’s history. “Our graduating class today is only one of the two who have completed this Tesla program at the community college level in the U.S., now that is something to be proud of,” President Dreyfuss said to the graduates who sat among their families. Regional Service Manager for Tesla, Michael Ojaghian

That’s how Flores’ road to Rio Hondo’s automotive program and passion for vehicles began. “I decided to come to Rio because they had the bachelor’s program,” Flores continued. “So, that was great because I was able to do what I love, as well as get a higher education.” Like the rest of her fellow graduates, Flores will be moving on from Rio and begin working at a Tesla shop. Flores will be the only graduate moving out of the state, though. She’ll begin working at a Tesla shop in Scottsdale, Arizona soon. Over Ten Years in the Making: My Childhood Leading Up to “Infinity War”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe came together for its latest release, Infinity War, which broke box office records.

This coming July marks the tenth anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Back in 2008, a newly branded Marvel Studios took a chance and released the first film, in what would later be followed by an avalanche of films, “Iron Man.” Today, the character Iron Man is practically known world-wide, compared to the reputation the character had prior to his debut on the big screen. So with the help of Marvel Studios and director John Favreau, the cinematic universe was unleashed onto the world and has not shown any slowing down at the box-office.
With the guidance of longterm producer turned president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, Marvel Comics characters have become a household name. Each film that has followed “Iron Man,” Marvel Studios has done an unprecedented feat in gaining both critical and financial praise by critics and audiences alike. And with the production value of Walt Disney Studios behind their cinematic universe, Marvel Studios pushes their films forward in all aspects of filmmaking. Being a comic book fan in today’s age is truly a dream come true. Since my first encounter with Spider-Man in the early nineties, I’ve been fascinated with the stories being told about the character in both animated
and comic book form. The relatability of the character and his villains rogue gallery drew me in and has not let go to this day. And with the help from Marvel Studios and Feige’s understanding of the characters that encompass these worlds and their backstories, my fandom for Spider-Man and his fellow superhero friends has skyrocketed to all new heights. Each film following the first “Iron Man” has helped my childhood become a reality year after year. With the exception of a couple of creative misses, the Marvel cinematic universe is nearly perfect to my eyes. Feige has truly helped create something special that, in my opinion, rivals the popularity of the Star Wars franchise.
For many younger generations, this is and will be their franchise that they grow up with. The fans of the source material already have lots of invested reading hours, so with that in mind, the success of the films also benefited from those fans and newcomers because the word of mouth involving the films has been positive for the most part. Now through the course of ten years of production under their belt, Marvel Studios is set to release “Avengers: Infinity War.” This new release in the cinematic universe will be the culmination of 18 films coming together for the first time in Hollywood history. Each film has been placing storylines that are about to be concluded not
only by “Infinity War,” but by the next Avengers film that is set for release next year. But until then, us fans get to speculate and anticipate what heroes will make it onto the next phase of films that Marvel Studios has planned for many years to come. As someone who has followed the growth of the Marvel cinematic universe from the very beginning, it will be difficult to come into terms that some of the actors that I’ve come to appreciate and love will call it quits due to their contracts expiring after the next two Avengers films. Whatever the decision that Feige and Marvel Studios come to, it will no doubt be in the best interest of the studio to push these marvelous films beyond the level of success.

The Spirit of Rio Hondo Departs: Focusing On Sandy Sandello NOAH GARCIA News Editor
noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu
While an institution can change its facilities, infrastructure and policies, the spirit of Rio Hondo College has always persisted. No one has exemplified the best Rio Hondo College has to offer more than someone who has served the RHC community for over 40 years: Sandy Sandello- the executive assistant to the Superintendent President and the Board of Trustees. Sandy Sandello is proven to be dedicated, as she has served this community for 42 years. She started out in admissions and records in 1975 (for four years) being hired one month out of high school. She then applied for the secretary in the president’s office, working for two years. When the executive assistant retired, she applied and got the job. In her own words, Sandello’s job includes, “To facilitate and assist

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been waking up before 7 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday. Not for church, not for a job, and not to workout. It’s because of soccer. When I was a boy, while my friends would be up around 9 a.m. to watch cartoons, I was already one Spanish League Soccer game in. From Real Madrid Club de Futbol in Spain to Manchester United Football Club in England to AC Milan in Italy, these powerhouses of European football got me hooked to the sport known around the globe as the beautiful game.

the president in any manner that I can in order to make his/her job easier…. I have worked for every single president minus two - total of 12! Sandello is incredibly talented. If there’s one main talent she’s developed from the job, It’s flexibility as her past experience working with dozens of different iterations of the RHC institution has developed her ability to work with all types of management styles. In her words, “every President has their own vision, philosophy and personality which I have been able to adapt to.” Sandy cares about RHC and its community; and as someone who has seen the development of the campus, educationally and structural, she’s proud to say that she loves the school and how its grown over time. “I’ve loved every moment of my job because every day is not the same …We all have that same mindset. I feel that we have so many success stories, that to me that’s why
rio hondo is so great; because people care. ” Sandello has been here for so long, Sandello has become an outstanding figure of the institution. She has always represented Rio Hondo College with an outstandingly graceful presence which has garnered respect for not only herself, but the college she represents. RHC president Teresa Dreyfuss had worked with Sandello for several years. “Sandy works for Rio Hondo College 42 years ago. She has a lot of college history knowledge, has served many presidents well. We will miss her friendly approaches and her smiles.” said Dreyfuss. The Board of Trustees recognized Sandello at the May 9th Board meeting, and was recognized at the Senate meeting with a resolution and standing ovation. Her last day is May 31, and Rio Hondo College will miss its longstanding representation of Sandy Sandello.
VIA SANDY SANDELLO Sandy Sandello was recognized at Rio’s Academic Senate earlier meeting this month. Sandello was also recognized by the Board of Trustees May 9.
Instead of going outside to play cars with my buddies in our apartment complex or spend time playing with action figures, I found it more meaningful to learn from the greats via television. Having no brothers and three sister who had no interest in sports with no family around meant that my only source of bonding was with my friends. By the time the games were over midday, my friends were off with their families enjoying their weekend. This meant lots of alone time. Alone time spent with my soccer ball and the wall outside my apartment door. This is where I gained independence and comfort in being myself. With the ball I felt unstoppable, having fun
improving my skills without knowing. I spent hours kick the ball off the wall throughout my youth. Once I grew older, it was easier for me to bail on friends and spend my time getting better because it was automatic to me. Soccer is a thinking man’s game. It’s much more than 22 players on a field with a ball and two nets on each end. Soccer goes parallel with life experiences and I am someone who has used the tools learned from playing the game to be able to adapt in each moment. With 11 players per team, each squad is split into four positions: forwards, midfielders, defenders, and one goalkeeper. Together, the three lines move as one, shifting
side to side to prevent the opposing team from scoring. The purpose of the 11 players is to find balance as a team and as a unit they pounce forward to score. Scoring is an art. Scoring takes all 11 guys to be imposing enough on the opposition to dissect and pierce through and into the net. This is something that I have always taken into any aspect of life. I work in a newsroom full of hard-working people, these smart go-getters all work together as one entity to get issues done on deadline. It’s a goal. Goals are always set in soccer and in life. Without goals, you don’t win. If you don’t work hard in the newsroom, deadline won’t be
met. Til this day I wake up at 4 a.m. on Saturdays for English Premier League coverage and 6 a.m. Sundays. Most of my friends are over my weekly Friday night excuse of, “Sorry bud but I have to be up early for the games tomorrow.” But thanks to my dedication, they know what the game means to me and aren’t surprised. I don’t intend on changing my schedule whatsoever. This is embedded in me forever I believe and it has become the norm in my life and I’m proud of it. Some say I’m crazy, I say it’s selfless. Choosing to be a part of something bigger than me that I can’t control.
El Salvador has upheld some of the strictest abortion laws in the world. They deny women the option to make choices for their own body, even in the case of rape, incest, or because of health risk. Women who have had an abortion can be convicted for two to eight years. This sentence excludes those who have suffered from a miscarriage and are unfairly convicted of aggravated homicide. These women can face up to 40 years in prison. Teodora del Carmen Vásquez is one of the many
women who was convicted of aggravated homicide in 2008 due to having a stillbirth. Police officers accused her of murdering her baby by inducing an abortion on her nearly full-term baby and she was sentenced to 30 years in prison. El Salvador’s Ministry of Justice eventually reduced Teodora’s sentence, but did not overturn the conviction or recognize her innocence. She is just one of the many women that have been unreasonably convicted for something that they cannot control as she now faces years
in prison. This abortion law results in women and adolescent girls secretly having abortions and putting their health at greater risk. Illegal abortions can be deadly, especially on an adolescent whose reproductive system is still developing. Sadly, many of these pregnancies are due to high rates of sexual violence. According to Amnesty International, “National Family Health Survey indicates that 23% of all adolescent girls between the ages of 15 and 19 years old
have had at least one pregnancy. Nearly half (47.7%) of those aged 18 or under when they first became pregnant said they had not wished to become pregnant.” Fall of 2016, The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) introduced a bill aimed to legalize abortion under certain circumstances. This bill would allow women to have an abortion if the mother’s life is at risk, if the fetus is considered unviable, or in cases of trafficking or rape. Unfortunately this bill has had no progress.

Why Representation Matters DANTE LOPEZ-BENNETT Copy Editor
dante.lopezbennett9611@my.riohondo.edu
I have a theory that representation matters because we’re not all in the position of being as free from the actions of others as we’d like to think that we are. Point me to the system that can account for every single little nuance of our complicated natures. The bits and pieces of our individual human experiences make it so that voices of others in our life are absolutely impactful. The human conscience makes it so that we are about as free as the most oppressed amongst us. But say we threw it all out the window. Every rule and stratagem that you convince yourself is so absolutely important to you, and then all that the mainstream zeitgeist says should demand your attention. I suppose we can create a delegation of men to govern and teach women how to be “women.” I suppose we could make it so that a congress of exclusively one race of human beings from the same circumstance outline the rules for all of us. I suppose we could make it so that we trust those whom we have never met. I suppose we could put another man in your position to “take
care” of her, or female in your position to be “cherished” by him. I suppose we could make it so that another person is responsible for tucking your children into bed. But then, I wonder how many of us would be content to say that such things don’t matter. Having the audacity to think as though you are adept at everything is problematic, to say the least. Because we know how debilitating loneliness and death can be, we’d like to deviate from those things as much as possible, and so we appoint those accordingly, in the hope that their decisions lead us to peace of mind and away from such profoundly inexplicable phenomena. Enter politicians, spouses, and celebrity, because, in function, all of these things are the same difference. They’re designated titles entrusted from those willing to be in positions of vulnerability in the hope of orchestrating a better quality of living for the “good” of the collective. For the good of countries, relationships, and esteems. You buy an album because you identify with it, and feel empowered. You vote because you hope for favorable circumstances to yourself.
You love because it’s self-explanatory. In short, representation matters because we are a lot closer to one another than we’d like to think of as being possible. Because it is both an investment of trust into another, and portrayal of the level of esteem to which you hold yourself. Because we can see our similar likeness in another and are perhaps more prone to live vicariously. Free from the consequence of reality. I suppose that if anything, the act of representing is the manner in which we try to attribute some sense of order to what decisions we are unable to make ourselves. It is, in every sense of the words, what we want to need. Reliance on others. Representation for better or worse, matters strictly due to the fact that the hard-headed human creature is the only thing with the audacity to go out of its way to grab the owl out of the tree just to ask it: “But Who, if not me?” By attempting to understand and enforce the impossible, we’ve created a set of restraints in which we must maneuver either to our detriment or benefit.
Its Time to Start Paying College Athletes IGNACIO CERVANTES Reporter
ignacio.cervantes8813@my.riohondo.edu
“We watch because these electricfying athletes motivate us and provide a similar product that the NFL players do.” Let’s face it, you and I turn our televisions onto College Football to watch players like Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama Crimson Tide rookie quarterback, make big plays on the big stage. Against the Crimson Tigers in the Football Bowl Subdivision National Championship game, he performed exceptionally well and had us glued to our screens. We watch because these electrifying athletes motivate us and provide a similar product that the National Football League players do. Therefore, they should be rewarded as such. These players deserve to get a share of the profits
just like the players in the NFL do. The National Collegiate Athletic Association claims themselves to be a “non-profit” when in reality, all this money must be going somewhere. Yet they have the audacity to claim to be a philanthropic group. Two years ago, the NCAA shifted its one-game championship system into a threegame playoff which increased the revenue by millions once it was introduced that a semifinal round would be added. According to an article from CBS News online, the College Football Playoff alone generates $600 million a year. The players are dedicating their lives to the sport and do not see any of the millions of dollars in profits that come out of the playoffs. The dedication to practice and providing publicity for the big game is as intensive as what NFL players experience. According to economist Andy Schwartz, College Football’s Division I revenue for the 2013-2014 season was calculated at $3.4 billion from ticket and merchandising
sales, athletic department donations, and television contracts. Coaches, athletic directors, assistant coaches’ salaries continue to increase, yet the players continue to get ignored. Something as little as an extra thousand dollars or so a year given as a grant to be used for miscellaneous equipment or necessities to keep up with the student-athlete lifestyle. But in 2012 when ESPN signed a $7.3 billion contract with the FBS for 12 years of television rights to the new playoff format, the money continued to fall into the pockets of the wrong people. There are 85 players on a roster with college scholarships and that’s earned from football talent. Just being a reason as to why such large quantities of money is being made is reason enough to pay them something on top of the scholarship. Because if someone made lots of money from exposing your talents, you would like a reap of the benefits as well.

The Power of Creating Fear
OLIVIA VENEGAS
Opinion/Lifestyles Editor olivia.venegas4091@my.riohondo.edu
To create fear is a useful tactic for those who want to establish control. It is a tactic used by individuals with ideologies and a lack of resources and/or who are oppressed to achieve a certain kind of goal. Creating fear can be done by anyone, not just those who fit the stereotypical image of “terrorist” we have embedded into our society since the 9/11 attack. Anyone can inspire fear in another individual or group of individuals to gain control. Consider how we as individuals have been conditioned to be good citizens in our society by following the rules and if we break the rules then there are consequences. Parents, teachers, and others of authority teach children everyday that there consequences to our wrongful actions. If students do not do their work, it will affect their grade which may affect their academic future. If children disobey their parents, there is discipline. If we are to break the law we can be arrested and then have a criminal record. Individuals are conditioned to be good citizens by creating fear of the consequences if they are not cooperated. Fear is created and used by those who have taught us the importance of being a good and lawful person. At a young age, individuals are introduced to the power of inspiring fear which has made it nearly unnoticeable in our everyday lives. We are more worried with security threats and terrorist attacks since they strike fear in more obvious ways. Since the 9/11 attack, the American public has been afraid of another terrorist attack, and since then, we have complied to certain security measures that would otherwise be seen as unnecessary just for us to feel safe in our own country. Just for us to feel safe, we give up the liberties that our very country laid the foundation to be. This all occurs due to fear being created. Although, the invasion of our personal privacy for security measures is not a new issue, it is an issue that has been happening for so long that it is now apart of our society and it is normalized.
On Twitter, there is the current meme of knowing that our own personal FBI Agent is responsible for watching us through the cameras of our cell phones and laptops. The invasion of personal privacy has obviously been normalized to the point of comedy. The constant use of this joke has desentized us to believe that the idea of being watched is acceptable. Instead of being infuriated by the invasion of our privacy we now crack jokes in an attempt to rationalize how completely terrified we are of living in a world like today’s.. We hastily complied to TSA checkpoints, the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, enhanced surveillance, security, and background checks without much of a hesitation. We also did not think twice when our government prioritized military spending over education, healthcare, and necessary social programs. According to NationalPrioritiesProject.org, “In the decade following Sept. 11, 2001, military spending increased 50 percent, adjusted for inflation.” Creating fear does not just force us to comply or be good citizens, fear can be created for profit. Commercials for home security systems shows the audience the dangerous and scary possibilities a homeowner can face if they do not have a security system. The demand and selling of home security measures rose. More and more homes installed cameras and security codes, purchased firearms, or other means of safety. Gun stock rose, and still rises after every mass shooting that occurs, due to the public’s fear. Militarization of our local police increased as the military spending increased. The surplus of military weaponry police received did not occur in all neighborhoods, mainly just in the neighborhoods compiled predominantly of people of color. The fear that was created and reinforced by political figures and the media has shifted the public’s perception of what it means to be safe and what needs to be done to feel safe. It is the manipulation of the concept of fear that has allowed individuals to accept certain beliefs about our society that might have otherwise not existed.

Black Women’s History Month
OLIVIA VENEGAS
Opinion/Lifestyles Editor olivia.venegas4091@my.riohondo.edu
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, and Frederick Douglass are just some of the black men in history that have stood out against society on the matters of slavery and civil rights. Often though, there are those who have also done so but are not acknowledged, hidden figures. It is not to say that the efforts of these men were not valuable but we must no forget the efforts and the struggles of their sisters. Women of color have fought to alter a society that was against them and their brothers since the time of slavery. These women of color are not taught in public education. School children do not the struggles of these women that they so greatly benefit from. Women of color have been in feminist movements since the first wave that brought Susan B. Anthony and the nineteenth amendment. In oppose to the “Susan B. Anthony Feminism”, black women of the time were demanding justice for hate crimes, rights for the freed slaves, and rights as black women. Sojourner Truth, a
former slave that constructed speeches and speeches demanding for the understanding her own experience in society as a person of color and as a woman. These speeches are the first recording of the idea of intersectionality. Intersectionality is the concept that social characteristics of gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and disability are all interconnected, not separate issues. This understanding led to Truth’s “Aint I a Woman” speech which challenged society’s views of black women in comparison to white women. As written in Angela Y. Davis’ book Freedom is a Constant Struggle, “ Individual black American women are positioned differently within social structures and hierarchies of social class, sexual orientation, education, region, age, and religion.” These words by Davis would not be possible without
Unpacking the Stripper Stigma SABRINA TORRES Reporter
sabrina.torres2387@my.riohondo.edu
The strip club industry in Los Angeles makes over a billion dollars in profits a year and employs more women than ever before. However, the stigma behind strippers remains negative and women working in the industry continue to be shamed. Most women are attracted to the profession for many reasons. But one thing remains true, they do it for themselves. To be a good stripper is to be confident with one’s sexuality. To be able to bare it all on stage with confidence. Aside from easy money, it allows women to save up and support their own dreams. They are financially independent. Like a musician, artist, fashion designer, etc. strippers are simply selling
something. Some believe there is a hierarchy for women who teach pole dancing and stripping. Some do not wish to be associated with strip culture for fear of being looked down upon or slut-shamed. In reality, stripping is the liberation of a woman to do as she pleases with her body. When a dancer gets on stage there is liberation and an embrace of herself and her sexuality. Being a stripper is another way to prove to society that girls can do or be whatever they want. Successful women like Lady Gaga, Amber Rose, and Cardi B were strippers prior to fame. It helped them achieve their goals and led them to where they wanted to be and they did it all independently. Not only has stripping led to fame and fortune, but it has also helped women pay for their college tuitions.
Sojourner Truth’s revolutionary speech. Violent hate crimes against
black men and women movements was first established by Ida B. Wells. She did so by traveling to Europe for support for the first anti-lynching movements. Wells determination also established some of the first anti-rape movements which are issues women and men are still challenging today.
Josephine St. Pierre Rofin led the discussion of the “creation of a national organization of black women’s clubs” which led to the establishment of the National Association of Colored Women’s Club. At a time where racism within mainstream feminism was unheard of, Josephine St. Pierre Rofin led a group of black women to create an organization whose ideals were not tainted by racism. Their all-inclusive motto was “Lift as we climb”. Maria Stewart, “she demanded education for black women at a time when schooling for women was controversial.” These demands for education for black women later established public schools for poor white children. Though Stewart’s movements demanded public schooling, black boys and girls did not immediately benefit from their efforts. “The boycott would not have been successful without their
[black domestic workers] refusals, without their critical refusals.” Angela Y. Davis elaborates on black female domestic workers during the time of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Working black women in the 1950’s had the same jobs as their slave ancestors, domestic workers. And much like their slave ancestors, they too refused. These women were the majority of those who rode the Montgomery buses to and from their domestic jobs. Without their first refusals, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr might not have became the prominent icon. The efforts of black men cannot alone represent the efforts of people of color, and white women cannot only represent the efforts of all women. The voices and stories of women of color must be shared and taught in order to understand the strength in these women and all women of color everywhere. Without their refusals and their voice, we would not have the resistance we have today. The Black Lives Matters movements, the Times Up movements, and Women’s March originate upon the beliefs of the women of color before us.
To Fandoms: Don’t Disrespect, Try Understanding First
JAIME APARAICIO Reporter
jaime.aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu
To paraphrase an intelligent and articulate YouTube personality by the name of Chris Hartwell, we live in an age of extremes. All too often do I visit the comments section of a Facebook post or a tweet from another YouTube personality that I notice a random stranger had taken the time to go out of their way and point out the supposed error of the individual that had just posted. I wonder if the people who go and specifically target these personalities actually get some type of pleasure from spreading negativity in the form of harsh words or even physical threats, all because they didn’t agree with what the person expressed. I’ve always told myself that if I don’t agree with what another person says, that I first attempt to understand their point of view before coming to a conclusion that I don’t agree with the person.
Specifically, in pop culture fandom, these supposed fans of popular properties are too quick to judge a new installment or a trailer for an upcoming film before they even truly understand what it is they are complaining about. The latest installment in the well-known Star Wars saga divided the huge fanbase because the creators of the film took the story in a totally different direction than what the fans had expected. The direction of the film was due to the fact that the episodic installment of The Force Awakens was criticised to be too similar to the previous classic A New Hope which was filmed back in the 1977. Fans of such famous properties should get accustomed to the fact that studios will eventually change things up in the boardrooms to try and keep said properties fresh and intriguing before the story in progress begins to feel too familiar or even stale. As a fan of popular
properties such as Star Wars and Marvel Studios films, I am aware that the popularity of certain installments within each series will have studio heads trying to figure out how they can continue the success that the previous films have brought and therefore replicate it. Eventually though, there will be a film that will stir emotions or cause me to outright disagree with what they did in order to keep the story fresh. As a fan myself, I will try to understand why the decisions were made in the cutting-room floor in order to try and keep some civility in the chatrooms of popular social media sites and apps. The same mentality can even be applied to more important matters in the world, such as politics and certain public figures. All I ask in the end is that all fans and followers of popular subjects attempt to do the same thing.

Time and time again many of us have been in situations where a member of a minority says or does something racist against another minority. As tragic as it is, many of our own family members are guilty of it. Yet, when confronted, many of those same people will say they aren’t racists. How could they be racist when they themselves are a minority? The answer is colorism. Colorism was first stated by author and Pulitzer Prize winner Alice Walker. She said that colorism was: “Prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their color.” Racism and colorism, are connected but are used differently. The lighter the skin tone the better a person is believed to be. Kimberly Jade Norwood best states the difference between racism and colorism in her article, ‘If You is White,
You’s Alright…’ Stories About Colorism in America, “A clear example of racism would involve a business that refuses to hire Black people. Colorism would not preclude the hiring of a black person, but there would be a preference for a Black person with lighter skin tone than a darker skinned person.” People of color with lighter-skin tones are more widely accepted and valued in our society than those of darker-skin tones. This all started because of colonialism. Colonialism brought us the American Way/Dream. The values that Make America Great (Again) are mostly awful and not at all inclusive. Many countries around the world have embedded colonial ideologies into their societies. This means that foreign countries have adapted to European standards of beauty like valuing lighter-skin tones and believing they are more beautiful. Colorism occurs across races and affects women of color more than men. White people often prefer a lighter-skin African American rather than their dark counterparts in friendships and in the media. Just
look at the light-skin tone of Beyonce, and the first Black president of the U.S, Barack Obama. Their lighter-skin tones are not the exact reason for their success but it is definitely a characteristic that helped. Colorism is also gendered. All women are valued and judged based upon their appearance, and our society still follows the European standards of beauty, darker-skinned Black women will be seen as less valuable than lighter-skinned Black women. Author Norwood, a darker-skinned Black woman, recalls walking around town at young age with her mother, a light-skinned Black woman, and experienced strangers within her Black community, apologizing to her for not looking as “beautiful” as her mother due to her “nappy” hair and darker complexion. As a young girl, Norwood understood that her dark-skin was “ugly” and would spend days looking in the mirror “wishing I looked like my mother.” Colorism is rampant among the Hispanic and Latino communities as well. As stated earlier, those with lighter skin tones are valued
over others. Brazil, a country full of diversity seems to only boast European looking models. Gisele Bunchen, arguably the most famous supermodel in the world, is of German descent, yet the everyday Brazilian woman has a darker complexion. From songs (Capullo y Serullo comes to mind) to board games (loteria anyone?) and- even cake snacks (remember what “Nitos” used to be called?) Black people are depicted in these cartoonish ways that do nothing but harm their image in media and society. But colorism does not stop there. Obviously other parts of the world are affected by it (women from India pay hundreds and thousands of dollars every year to bleach their skin) , but the United States seems to have a particular relationship with the concept. It wasn’t that long ago that Irish immigrants were placed on the same socioeconomic level as Black people. Next week, we will explore the history of colorism and how it has changed the way society views us and how we view and treat each other.
Believing in Reptilians is Not That Crazy
JOSE AHUMADA Reporter
jose.ahumada7466@my.riohondo.edu
You may not know it by now, but there are roughly 12 million Americans who believe that this world is governed by half human, half reptile beings known as reptilians. I am one of those Americans who believe that they may be walking right now among us. They are usually shape shifting as the politicians we put our faith in today but are not limited to the people that you interact with on a daily basis. It sounds crazy that this many people believe it, but it’s true according to a Public Policy Polling survey. And it makes sense, because our politicians who claim to always want to “fight for the people” and all this nonsense never seem to have our best interest in mind. And you just can’t seem to trust everybody. Just ask Rob Brotherson, an academic psychologist and author of Suspicious Minds: Why We Believe Conspiracy Theories. He even explained it himself that if we were all “completely trusting, it would not be good for survival. Sometimes people really don’t have our best inter-

Mark Zuckerberg or Mark Suckerberg? LUIS GUITERREZ Reporter

What’s one thing that Facebook and Uber has in common? It’s that the two of these can’t stay out of the news and it’s always for bad reasons. And it seems that everyone’s favorite billionaire Mark Zuckerberg got away with selling away people’s information. Zuckerberg went to Washington DC because of a data breach, from a company called Cambridge analytica. What they did was manipulate Facebook to getting millions of people’s data and selling then to whoever they wanted. And oh yeah all of this was done without the users consent. What they’re most known for is using this information and selling it to the Trump administration. He had a total of two hearing that lasted just two days. The first hearing he had couldn’t of gone better than it did for him. Most if not all of the government officials in that hearing seemed a little too old to even understand what Facebook even was. And in response Zuckerberg gave a typical corporate answer that will quickly lead into the

next question. Throughout the course of the first hearing it seemed like he generally walked away from it Scott clean. The second hearing was a little bit more intense for Zuckerberg. This officials seemed to be a little bit more on the ball and aware of Facebook, but not all of them. It was made clear that Zuckerberg had a feature on Facebook that no one else had that enabled him to delete sent messages completely from Facebook. But after that enactment Facebook announced
that they would make the feature available to everyone. He then went on to say that there were other companies, that did the same thing as Cambridge. A more notable one was in Canada and they were basically the Canadian version of Cambridge. Even throughout this whole breach Zuckerberg said his very own data was compromised. Even that they’re doing everything they can to catch fake Russian accounts, that convince people to vote one way more than an other. Even though his com-
pany had known about this information breach for about 27 months, it was a business decision to not inform there user’s. But now on Facebook they is a page that will inform you if your data has been used in this breach although it is a little vague on if it was you or a friend. It seems to be that more laws will be put in place now to notify people if there data is used in something like this ever again. It’s no secret Facebook will be facing huge fines because of their actions.

It seems like they are doing whatever they can to be two steps ahead of PUBG(Players Battleground Unknown) which is there main competition. They claim that the game will be exactly the same with no cuts on the mobile version, it’ll ever be cross play and cross progression for PC and console. high since the release of it taking the gaming community by storm. When the final release of this app comes out many people are predicting that this will rival the last
mobile hit Pokemon Go. It was no secret that everyone and there mama was playing that. To see another hit like that on mobile gaming will definitely be interesting because they are setting a new bar. If you’re thinking to yourself “How will Epic afford to maintain these servers?” well the answer to that is simple. Much like Grand Theft Auto 5 it’s staying a float through micro transactions. Gamers love to stand out and look different from everyone else by buying different skins for characters and weapons. As previously stated it’s going to be fun to see what the video game industry does now, because this is definitely a game changer. The question is now will other triple A titles follow in its footsteps.
jaime.aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu
As being seen by climatologist Dr. Judah Cohen and the rest of the scientific community, they have recorded that the temperatures of the arctic North Pole were warmer than that of Europe. Within the current running season, subfreezing temperatures have been running across the European country; ranging from Poland to Spain. Citizens of Rome were witnesses to snow falling in the area for the first time in six years. On another part of the Europe, Friday also saw Britain and Ireland being hit by a storm that brought snow and high winds of freezing temperatures. In general, the Arctic is above the freezing mark in the middle of the winter season. Dr. Cohen, author of a 2017 study that linked a warming Arctic to intermittentintermittend blasts of cold temperatures, had this to say about the anomaly weather in the region known as the polar vortex: “It’s locking in that cold air at the high latitudes in the Arctic region.” Dr. Cohen is referring to mother nature sometimes having bursts of freezing air escaping from a weakening polar vortex that acts in the same manner asof a dam does. With the planet going through anomalies such as warmer seasons, the warmer temperatures weakens the vortex and allows the air to escape to close by countries, therefore causing those same countries to witness colder weather than usual. And Wwith the growing research suggesting the cause of these anomalies as being from global warming, it can only be foreseen that the polar vortex will continue to weaken.

One of the world’s most famous and greatest physicists, Stephen Hawking died early Wednesday, March 13 morning in his England home. Hawking was diagnosed with a rare disease at the age of 22 that left him in a wheel chair and took away most of his ability to speak. Despite this, Hawking went on to live a lengthy life, passing away at the age of 76. “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years,” Hawking’s family said in a statement released Wednesday. Hawking was best known for his work on black holes. In 1976, Hawking discovered that a black hole emits energy and starts losing mass when it forms. Before this, it was believed that black holes were just empty regions in space that vacuumed everything around it. The physicist eventually found himself being featured in shows like The Simpsons

Stephen Hawking, RIP 1942-2018.” Fellow star-gazers, NASA also tweeted out a message in the wake of Hawking’s passing. “Remembering Stephen Hawking, a renowned physicist and ambassador of science. His theories unlocked a universe of possibilities that we & the world are exploring. May you keep flying like superman in microgravity, as you said to astronauts on @ Space_Station in 2014.” Hawking lives on through his wife, his two sons and his contributions as a physicist and human being to the world. “His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world,” Hawking’s family said in a statement. “He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.”

Hand Axes Found In Europe to Be The Oldest Stone Tools to Date
GILBERT ESPANA Reporter
gilberto.espana0348@my.riohondo.edu
Large “Hand-Axes” known as an Acheulean large cutting tool first originated on the African continent and were thought to have been invented by the early human, Homo Habilis around 1.76 million years ago. A rare haul of picks, flakes, and hand axes recovered from ancient sediments in Kenya. They are the oldest remains of advances stone tools yet discovered. The largest of the tools are around 20 centimeters long and have been chipped into shape on two sides, a hallmark of more sophisticated stone toolmaking. The stone tools, made for crushing, cutting, and scraping, gave early humans a means to butcher animal carcasses. They strip them of meat and crack open
their bones to expose the nutritious marrow. A team of researchers led by Kent’s colleague Christopher Lepre describe finding the stone tools in a region called Kokiselei in the Rift Valley. The site is closed due to the many spectacular human fossils that have been found. Lepre’s team found both Oldowan and Acheulian stone tools at Kokiselei, but no evidence for advances stone tools has been found at a site occupied by H. erectus 1.8 million years ago. One explanation offered by researchers is that H. erectus originated in Asia instead of Africa. Some researchers believe the first exodus from Africa could have been earlier than the date for Dmanisi. Trenches dug at the same site revealed remains of longgone species that shared the land with those who left the

dominant continent of Africa. Which suggested that Homo Habilis migrate out of Africa to Europe he most widely supported explanation argues that the origin of the European Acheulean is linked to
an “Out of Africa” scenario. The Oldowan tools named after the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania were wielded by our predecessors for around a million years.
Bones found in 1940 Likely Those of Amelia Earhart RAMON ALVARADO Editor-in-Chief
ramon.alvarado7328@my.riohondo.edu
Bones found in a remote South Pacific island in 1940 have been reexamined and are now believed to belong to legendary American pilot Amelia Earhart. The bones were first examined in 1940 by physician D.W. Hoodless. The only conclusion Hoodless made was that the bones belonged to a man. University of Tennessee researcher, Richard Jantz began to question Hoodless’s claim because forensic analysis wasn’t nearly what it is today in 1940. “Forensic anthropology was not well developed in the early 20th century,” Jantz states in the papers in which his data was published. “There are many examples of erroneous assessments by anthropologists of the period. We can agree that Hoodless may have done as well as most analysts of the time could have done, but this does not mean his analysis was correct.” Using a computer program called Fordic that estimates the sex of someone through their remains, Jantz found that Hoodless was, indeed, wrong. The bones belonged to a woman. After further examining
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION/ JAKE LAURELL Amelia Earhart’s body was never found and the circumstances of her disapperance seems to have finally been answered in the South Pacific.
the bones, Jantz found that they were more similar to Earhart’s than 99 percent of other individuals in a reference group. Earhart’s body measurements were estimated using old photographs and measuring her old clothing that has been preserved at Purdue University. Jantz then compared the body measure-
ments to the seven bones that were found on the remote island in 1940. After comparing the bones and body measurements, Jantz said “until definitive evidence is presented that the remains are not those of Amelia Earhart, the most convincing argument is that they are hers.” Earhart disappeared over
the Pacific Ocean in 1937 as she attempted to fly around the globe. Her disappearance has been one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history, with most believing she crashed into the ocean water. There have been no shortage of theories about Earhart’s disappearance in the past. One theory holds that Earhart was taken hostage by
Japanese forces who had been expanding over the Pacific as World War II was taking shape. With her remains likely found now, conspiracy theorists have something new to theorize: how could Earhart have ended up on that remote island in the Pacific?

Rainbow Six Siege invitational breached in Tuesday, Feb. 13, delivering an intense tournament to determine who is best in the world at Siege. The tournament had 16 teams from all across the world compete for the “ol’ hammer” trophy, and a prize pool of $500,000. For those that haven’t experienced what 25 million players have experienced across three different platforms, according to VentureBeat.com, Siege is a
game that sees a team of five attackers assault a team of five defenders by planting a defuser across two different bombsite objectives or either defeating all defenders. The 2018 invitational drew more attention this time around seeing four other bigger, prominent bigger esports organizations pick Siege teams. Powerhouse famed organizations of Faze Clan, CLG, Liquid, and EG all to acquire rosters in this growing esports scene. The invitational seemed to snag the spotlight this last weekend as Siege had over 1.69 million hours watched compared to the 0.7 million of last years
according to Esportscharts. com. During the invitational Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft were given the perfect venue to show off what what as players to expect in the coming weeks. Operation Chimera, a new PVE mode set in the small town of Truth or consequences, New Mexico along with two new operators to toy with that has Team 6 deal with the Chimera Virus infesting the town. These maps are set to feature a more narrative experience for the players as the maps are to be bigger than ever with offering five different types of “infected” to fight against.
The grand finals came to down to a best of five between the reigning champs team EG, versus another well known juggernaut of a team PENTA Esports. PENTA who were Rainbow Six Siege Seasonal Champions three times before were looking to overthrow EG. During the ban/pick phase seemingly saw this phase to be favored by EG as they quickly and feverishly defeated PENTA on the first two maps of Clubhouse and Oregon. In game leader for EG “Canadian” Troy Jaroslawski and “BC” Brandon Carr came out in dominant fashion top fragging and
dying. As the Matabele ants are hunted, about a third of the ants could have their legs bitten off by termites. Once the wounded ants are rescued, healthy ants spend about an hour or so licking the injured ones severed legs. The African ants take turns caring for their injured comrades, gently holding the hurt limb in place and front legs while intensely “licking” the wound for up to four minutes at a time. The Megaponera analis clash
with rival insect colonies though mostly termites. , and Tthe ants are known for raiding termite nests in order to steal valuable resources. The discovery made by Erik T. Frank marks the first time non-human animals have been observed systematically nursing their wounded back to health. New research has proven that ants spend hours after battles treating each other, as healthy ants take turns administering aid to the wounded. It has been proven that ants who have
been nursed back to health have a ninety percent chance of surviving. During battle, when as a Matabele ant loses a leg, those that survive can run once again at normal speed within a day of injury. Frank discovered that injured ants release a pheromone that acts as a signal flare, alerting the rest of the group when there’s a “man down.” Frank’s discovery has proven that these actions of the ants’ evolution is a sign that they are “intelligent or empathic.”. Erik T. Frank’s study has
slaying past PENTA during the first two maps. Then, on a map that PENTA had little experience on, and arguably one of EG’s best maps, Kafe Dostoyevsky became a down and dirty street fight struggle that saw PENTA as the clawing ahead at. On the fourth map Bank, that is when the tide started to shift towards the European boys across the pond. Bank saw a change in strategy and operator picks from PENTA as they began using Montagne to shield past the defenses of EG. The final game on Coastline was truly one of the best games we have ever witnessed in Competitive Siege history. Coastline was a dark horse map that has four viable defendable holdouts for the defending team. PENTA seemingly was going to run away with the final map taking four rounds in a row with team captain “Pengu” was top fragging leading his team to match point. One more round and PENTA hold up that hammer instead of EG for a second time in a row. With one final round left in the match and down 4-0 Canadian spawn peaks taking out PENTA’s long range specialist operator Glaz and rallying his team back to a even score of 4-4 taking the game to a nailbiter overtime. The match finally came to a close when in overtime where Pengu’s championship fire would not be extinguished as he clutched out the round for his team in a 1v2 scenario on the operator Hibana. Further proving that Siege is here growing more and more as a esport.

Matabele ants (also known as Megaponera analis) once injured, they release pheromones which draw other “soldiers” ants to the rescue. A team of scientists led by University of Lausanne postdoctoralpostdoctorate researcher Erik Frank, found out that the ants rescue their injured comrades and carry them to safety, even if the wounded ant isn’t exactly
shown the different behaviors of ants as Frank commented, “These behaviors that seem to be incredibly complex have a very clear purpose. The ants don’t know why they’re doing what they’re doing.” Frank and his colleagues at the Comoe National park research station in Northeastern Cote d’Ivoire saw that once in the nest, the ants carefully examine injured comrades, probing them with their antennae more than twice as often as healthy nest-mates.

Rare Mutation Among Bajau People Lets Them Stay Underwater Longer DANTE LOPEZ-BENNETT Copy Editor
dante.lopezbennett9611@my.riohiondo.edu
VIA SAM MANSFIELD/INDUS FILMS Melissa Ilardo found while conducting a study on the Bajau people that have lived this way of life for over 1000 years, discovered from ultrasound tests that of 59 villagers scanned showed thier spleens 50% bigger than the Saluan peoples.
`With territory comes responsibility, and to the Bajau people, or “sea nomads” of Southeast Asia, water has become a second home. Renowned Evolutionary Geneticist Melissa Ilardo has come to the forefront of the scientific community with her findings that the Bajau community of Sulawesi Indonesia exists in an environment with a culture that leaves them genetically predisposed to developing a supernatural underwater ability. `The supernatural ability in question is a prolonged ability to breathe underwater for up to two minutes more than the average person. The supernatural feat stems from the discovery of a significant evolution of the Spleens in the Bajau people. The spleen
which primarily allows for the recycling of oxygenated red blood cells has been observed within the Bajau people as the root cause for an increased rate of spleen contraction and release of oxygenated red blood cells. The recycling process employed by the Bajau spleen supersedes that of any other person’s by a long shot. Essentially, the people of Bajau, over time and the course of natural selection, have revealed themselves to be adept swimmers whose way of living is heavily dependent upon the aquatic environment around them. As per a US National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health study, “The Bajau total working time of 2-9 h per day suggests that some divers may spend more than 5 h per day submerged, which is the
greatest daily apnea diving time reported in humans.” With routine observation of the Bajau fisher’s penchant for spearfishing and spending more than half of their day underwater, Ilardo was keen to observe that the Bajaus’ spleens, regardless of their roles in diving or not, were much larger than those of any other known human community’s. On the remarkable findings and genealogy present in the Bajau spleen people she notes, “that doesn’t really compare to any other humans. The closest thing to that is sea otters.” As is so often the case with developments in the realm of science, we’re just scratching the surface. Leave it to scientists and spleen measurement machine wielding professionals to observe that humans are changing into superheroes. go figure.
This Casino Was Robbed! And You’ll Never Guess How! LUIS GUTIERREZ Reporter

PHOTO ILLUSTRATION/ JAKE LAURELL London hackers found a new way to hack: fish tanks.
So you know that whole paranoia of someone always watching you via internet connection? And being scared that someone might be able to rob you by it? Well hate to tell you that is still the case and instead of you being robbed it was a unnamed casino! Well a group of London hackers managed to do this through a thermostat in the casino fish tank! It was through something they are calling “internet of things” that’s when you have everything connected through your internet. Things from your AC, CCTV cameras, and in this case a thermostat. So
pretty much everything you can think of that connects and relays on the internet. Nicole Eagle the head of a cyber security team Darktrace told the WSJ (Wall Street Journal) on thursday. “There’s a lot of internet of things devices, everything from thermostats, refrigeration systems, HVAC [air conditioning] systems, to people who bring in their Alexa devices into the offices. There’s just a lot of Iot. It expands the attack surface and most of this isn’t covered by traditional defenses.” Then went on to give an example and used the casino and the fish tank. “The attackers used that to get a foothold in the network. They then found the
high-roller database and then pulled that back across the network, out the thermostat, and up to the cloud,” Robert Hannigan who ran the British government digital spying agency from 2014-2017, supported this claim by saying that hackers are targeting things of internet more and more. He then went on the record to say: “I saw a bank that had been hacked through its CCTV cameras because these devices are bought purely on cost.” So it’s going to be interesting to see, how big companies beef up there cyber security. Because hackers definitely love a challenge and like it or not they always find a way.

People all around the world hold all sorts of records for various reasons. Some for having long feet, putting swords down there mouths, and even video game records. And mister Billy Mitchell is one of those people, well
was one. He was formerly known as the “King of Kong” for holding the worlds best record on the classic “Donkey Kong” video game. Twin Galaxies they were the ones who are in charge of tracking high scores in video games so the gamer can properly be rewarded. Well it seems that TG (Twin Galaxies) have stripped Mitchell of his title of being the first person to ever reach a mil-
lion points on Donkey Kong. The reason for this sudden decision is because it was revealed that he was using an emulator. An emulator is something that you can easily download on your phone or computer, that will allow you to play all sorts of classic video games. TG was able to reach 1,047,200 points by using an emulator being crowned the top player at the time.
TG went on to say “The rules for submitting scores for the original arcade”Donkey Kong” competitive leaderboards requires the use of original arcade hardware only,” according to the group. “The use of MAME or any other emulation software for submission to these leaderboards is strictly forbidden.” Mitchell was first brought into the limelight of hold-
ing this record, because of a documentary being filmed at the time. “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. 2007”. And in that film he did come across as a bad guy too. This scandal was brought to light by a man named Jeremy Young. He was certain that there was no way he could possibly reach that enormous score.

Ninth Planet Myth Maybe True Afterall According to A Medieval Tapestry firm this a team from Queen’s University Belfast may have just figured out to see if a ninth planet really exist or not. It might be the Anglo-Saxons can answer this age-old question. With 950-year-old clues, in the Bayeux Tapestry they have pictures of a comet, and in 1066 the Tapestry was created. These documents go into detail of the passing of Halley’s Comet. By creating simulations of the comet orbit path, experts may have figured out if the ninth planet has any kind of effect on it. Nothing has yet to be confirmed, but this is getting a lot of space junkies excited. The thought of space alone is mind-blowing, but to have another planet in our system that we didn’t even know about is huge for mankind.
LUIS GUTIERREZ Reporter

There’s always been this theory that there has been a ninth planet at the end of our solar system. This idea has been called simply the “ninth planet theory”. Nasa and other space agencies have been debating for years now if there was another planet really hidden out there. This planet if it is true is estimated to be about 10 times bigger than Earth and 20 times further from the sun than Neptune. And if there is another planet it would explain why our solar system is a little off balance. Most stars in other systems tend to rotate in a line with its sun. But our system is a little bit different ours are off by six degrees on the axis side. Nasa believes this is because of the ninth planet that is hiding. Although experts can’t con-
“Planet Nine” if found from the help of ancient records is probably 20 times farther away from the sun than Neptune. If planet nine is out there in the far fringes of our solar system, this could help explain how the gravitional orbit in the Kuiper Astroid Belt that is beyond Neptune according to Queen’s University Belfast.

“David Nadlinger, who traps atoms for his quantum computing research at the
University of Oxford, captured this image on August 7 using a standard DSLR
camera.” The image is of a positively charged atom suspended in an ion trap. Nadlinger took this long exposure photograph that not only grasped the world’s attention. It also earned the Ph.D candidate a National Science Photography prize by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. “The idea of being able to see a single atom with the naked eye had struck me as a wonderfully direct and visceral bridge between the miniscule quantum world and our macroscopic reality,” Nadlinger said in a press release. People are wondering as to how Nadlinger was able to achieve capturing such an image. Nadlinger took the photo by peering through a window of the ion trap’s ultra-high vacuum chamber. He used a 50mm lens, extension tubes, and two flash units outfitted with color gels
as well. Nadlinger was able to capture an infinitely small atom. However, “At 38 protons and 215 billionths of a millimeter across, strontium atoms are relatively large by comparison.” Making it slightly less difficult to see the atom. But to put it into perspective, “Each atom is roughly 0.25 nanometers (or billionths of a meter) across; billions of the atoms would fit comfortably inside a single red blood cell.” Yet we are not seeing the actual outline of an atom. The only reason we are able to see the atom because it absorbed, then re-emitted laser light at a speed capturable by a long camera exposure. So what we are actually seeing is a reflection of laser light. Without the long exposure feature of the camera, the atom would not be visible to the naked eye.

ARTS AND ENTERT The Transformers Franchise Being Rebooted After Bumblebee? JAIME APARICIO Reporter

Being helmed by Travis Knight, who directed the 2016 stop-motion animated film “Kubo and The Two Strings,” the “Transformers” spin-off “Bumblebee” will be the next film in the successful line of movies based on the popular toy line. This will mark the sixth th installment in the “Transformers” films that have so far collectively grossed well over two billion dollars at the box-office despite the negative reviews from both critics and audiences alike. Although “Bumblebee” will be the next to be released in theaters, a proper sequel to “Transformers: The Last

Knight” was scheduled to be developed by its proposed June 28, 2019 release date, but has now been removed by Paramount Pictures. The reason for this is due to the studio, along with Hasbro, wanting to begin a fresh take on the franchise that some felt had been tarnished by director Michael Bay with his previous films in the franchise. Paramount Pictures went ahead and hired Knight to place his own look and feel on the “Transformers” franchise by placing the “Bumblebee” film in the 80’s and therefore making it a prequel to previous installments. In the prequel, the Bumblebee character will return to his robotic roots and be portrayed by a Volkswagen Beetle as he was
in the original cartoons. An attention to detail that will surely make fans of the original material happy. Along with the proposed reboot that will most likely take place after “Bumblebee” is released, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro plan on developing their own shared universe that will combine such franchises like “G.I. Joe”, “Micronauts”, and the aforementioned “Transformers”. The idea of a cinematic shared universe is nothing new to Hollywood, with Marvel Studios most notably starting the trend, and has since been tried to be duplicated by Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures. “Bumblebee” is slated to be released in theaters this December.
Unapologetically Black Black Panther Does Simple Superbly NOAH GARCIA News Editor
noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu
More often than not, pulling off the basics can do alot when impressing people. What Black Panther has done, is give audiences a film that has the standard superhero movie frame, but has components that are pulled together so well with everything executed so superbly; that the movie has become one of the best Marvel studios has to offer. The movie manages to seamlessly bring together ideas of isolationism, immigration, systemic racial tensions and weave them into the basic hero’s journey structure; creating a film that carries all these sophisticat-
ed messages while being an overall great superhero action movie. What we’ve come to expect from a marvel movie, as well as any action/adventure movie is displayed in Black Panther, but it is done so well and is so intricately characterized with the Movies style that the film rises from standard to fantastic If there are two ideas that i find to be the most poignant, is the idea of rebuking the ghosts of the past and finding your own path. In the Marvel Universe, everyone believes that T’challa ( Chadwick Boseman) country of Wakanda is simple and undeveloped, a ruse designed by his ancestors to hide their advanced civilization from the world. The main antagonist of the film, Michael
B. Jordan’s Killgrave, is not only trying to return and rule the country to gain some resemblance belonging and birthright, but in part to use the resources of a country that he believed abandoned him and his father to spread their power across the world and to dominate all those who are oppressors. The great part of this character is that his motivations are not only justified, but his idea of saving people, fueled in large by decades of black oppression, are not inherently bad. His methodology however is fueled by hatred and oppression, ultimately making him the same as the people he plans to attack. Nietzsche said it best, “Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a
monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.” By the end of the film, T’challa realizes that he has to not only evolve himself, his country and their practices, but look towards the future as someone who will make their own future and give past mistakes no power. One of my favorite aspects of the film is all of time put into the creating the culture of Wakanda. All of set design, as well as the clothing, jewelry, music, makeup and hairstyles are done so well on every person from main character to extra. Every aspect of Wakanda and its people not only are inspired and taken from black/african culture but are modernized; showing that the stigma of
primitiveness related to african peoples and cultures are not that but are a deeply sophisticated design that could easily be apart of the modern world. Black Panther takes these traditional and contemporary African Designs and uses them to help build a world that has its people wearing powerful, bright and prideful clothing; something thats fits perfectly with the mindset of the countries peoples. From the acting, to world building, it’s characters and it’s messages; Black Panther is a fantastic movie. With the way affecting culture right now, black panther is a film that’s not only memorable, but will change the standards of movie goers everywhere. Watching the film is a must.

2018 Academy Awards Wrap Up

The 90th Academy Awards took place Sunday, March 4 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “The Shape of Water” was the stand-out film, but empowering speeches and musical performances capped the exciting night. This year’s Academy Awards was a bit different from those in the past. There were more performances than usual with Miguel, Common and Mary J. Blige all hitting the stage, among others. Another difference this year’s grand movie show had was a prize for the winner with the shortest acceptance speech. Late-night television personality and this year’s
Oscar host, Jimmy Kimmel offered a jet-ski to whoever gave the shortest speech. At the end of the night, it ended up going to Mark Bridges, who won best costume design for his work in the film “Phantom Thread.” The night was ultimately about the actors, artists, composers, directors and designers who put together amazing films over the last year, though. Jordan Peele, who was best known for his comedy skits not too long ago, made history with his thriller “Get Out.” Peele became the first African-American to win an Oscar for best original screenplay. In his acceptance speech, Peele admitted that he didn’t think anybody would want
to help him make the film, but said he was thankful he received it. After his speech, Peele tweeted, “I just won an Oscar. WTF!?!” NBA and Los Angeles Lakers’ legend, Kobe Bryant won an Oscar for best animated short film. He wrote and narrated the winner, “Dear Basketball,” while Glen Keane directed Bryant’s ode to basketball. Best actress in a leading role went to Frances McDormand for her role in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” McDormand used her acceptance speech to praise all the women nominated. “Look around, ladies and gentlemen,” McDormand told the crowd after asking every female nominee in every
category to stand up, “We all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. Invite us into your office in a couple days — or you can come to ours, whichever suits you best — and we’ll tell you all about them.” T he big winner on the night, though, was “The Shape of Water,” recipient of the best picture Oscar. The human-creature romance film won a four of the 13 Oscar’s it was nominated for. Its four awards and 13 nominations were both the most of all movies. Guillermo Del Toro won best director for putting together the film. “The Shape of Water” also brought home Oscar’s for production design and music score.

According to the Disney and More blog, which has been accurate in reporting theme park news before, claims that a theme park based off of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy series “The Lord of The Rings” will be coming to Orlando, Florida in the near future. Being constructed under the code name “Project 314” in order to prevent leaked information to spread early throughout the Internet, the new theme park is said to be built by as early as 2023. “The Lord of The Rings” franchise, which has earned numerous Academy Awards, has become a worldwide phenomenon since their initial release in theaters and has even earned more financial success with lesser acclaimed films based off the “Hobbit” books. Other theme park additions said to be coming to Florida are those inspired by the video game company Nintendo.
Such properties from Nintendo that have been rumored for a while to be brought to life in theme park form are “The Legend of Zelda,” “Mario Kart,” and a roller coaster inspired by “Donkey Kong.” The Ministry of Magic additions from the “Harry Potter” franchise will also accompany the already built “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” attractions located at Orlando, Florida’s Universal Studios theme park. With Disney bringing more attractions from famous Pixar properties to their parks, new additions from the “Toy Story” franchise will be added with the likes of a Slinky Dog ride, an alien swirling ride with saucers, and a new restaurant based off the well-known cowboy character Woody. Along with the success of the “Jurassic Park” films comes new attractions from the current “Jurassic World” series that will take advantage of the hype surrounding the future release of “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

It’s been a few months now since we’ve seen Finn Jones aka Iron First, and Mike Colter aka Luke Cage together. Matter of fact the last time these dynamic duo have been seen together was back in Aug 2017 in the Defenders. There’s been some rumors bouncing around of if we’d see any crossovers now in the Marvel Netflix series now that the Defenders is all said and done. And it seems that the people got what they wanted with Danny and Luke teaming up in Luke Cage season 2! Now Iron Fist has had a little bit of a bumpy ride being labeled as the worst Marvel Netflix character so far. And his role in the Defenders didn’t help his cause either. But love him or hate him we couldn’t deny the chemistry he had with Luke throughout the whole series, they seemed to go perfect together like peanut butter and jelly. From the first time they encounter each other with that back way alley fight, or even the little conversations with him being tied up in a chair. It was clear they had something going on, and the fans wanted to see more of it. After the Defenders was

done tons of people wanted to see more of him and Luke team up with one another just like they do in some comic iterations such as “Heroes For Hire” which is pretty much what it sounds like. In that specific comic story they set up shop in NY and make a little bit of cash on the side while helping the innocent people of New York. Although it isn’t confirmed that’s what they’ll be doing exactly, it seems like they’re going to be doing something similar to that based off the images released by “Empire.Com”. Danny seems to have a somewhat big role in the series with Empire saying “Danny Rand, aka the Iron Fist. Fresh from their Defenders team-up, Luke and Danny will be reuniting briefly in Cage’s new season”. He will be kind of a mentor to Luke showing him how to channel his inner Chi just like Danny does to summon his weapon the Iron Fist. Not much or the plot for Luke Cage Season 2 has been released yet but they have put out some teasers on all social medias and Youtube of him just looking badass. As far as we know, we don’t know who Luke and Danny will be fighting and we’ll have to wait until June 22nd to find out.

It seems that after Ready Player one Mr.spielberg is finally ready to get into the superhero scene. He is once again teaming up with Warner Bros. To produce Blackhawk. For those who are unaware of Blackhawk he is a comic book character from DC Comics. Who was introduced in 1941 by Quality Comics who then got bought out by DC in 1957. His story follows him as he leads a group of elite pilots in the Black hawk Squadron in World War 2. It’s a no brainer that Warner Bros. Would do whatever they could to keep him because of his latest movie

Ready Player One, which grossed 476 million worldwide so far. And they seem pretty happy that he’s staying because Toby Emmerich a chairman said “We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure”. But don’t get to excited about this because it’s going to be a while before this movie begins production. He’s currently preparing for Indiana Jones 5, and then he has gone on the record to say after that he’s going to be making West Side Story. But in the meantime this talented director will keep us entertained with his other projects.

Writes Of Spring Student Speakers
VINCENT FRANCO/EL PAISANO NEWS The Wrties of Spring Festival happens every year, seeing students and faculty alike submit their written work the previous year usually in the first quarter. The book is also usually sold during the festival for under 20 dollars.
DANTE LOPEZ-BENNETT Copy Editor
dante.lopezbennett9611@my.riohiondo.edu
Wednesday, April 25- Rio Hondo’s “Writes of Spring” festival was alive and underway in the campus’ Wray Theatre to showcase seasonal writing talent that won publishing in the school’s “River’s Voice” journal. While a plethora of outside writers and subject matters graced the stage earlier in the day, by early evening, student writers took to the stage in display of their winning entries. Past the tables selling copies of the River’s Voice and Pizza was the dimly lit space of the Wray theatre that contained an audience of fewer than one hundred members all in eager anticipation of the readings that were sure to follow from their
fellow students. With a podium to far left of the stage, and seating arrangement made to accommodate the position of student readers, the showcase was an intimate affair of sorts where words seemed to carry twice the impact. Michael Khuraibet’s memoir, “Goodbye, Brother,” was the first of many stellar works throughout the evening that would shed light on the often complicated sentimental nature of life’s events much to the delight of the audience. There was not but one student in the audience left untouched by his brazenly poetic realization that whatever will be, simply will be. Brilliantly written though perhaps not as emotively performed was Israel Arzate’s “El Titere,” a poem worthy of the title of a masterwork
both thought-provoking and universally understood. Minimalistic and jarring, Arzate’s uncanny ability to portray the plight of an entity whose being is questioned by itself, undoubtedly left the audience with many things to ponder. Of particular appraise to all in attendance and arguably the standout showing of the evening was Jim Brannon’s winning drama, “Divine Technological Intervention,” a satiric take on the gargantuan degree to which technology plays in the days of our lives today. By the mechanically monotone performance of the student actors that accompanied him onstage, Brannon’s depiction of a world in which technology reigns supreme was brilliantly achieved, to say the least. The playwright’s pen has proven to be a formidable and witty force that would shine brightly even amongst
the most seasoned of writers. Following the tone of awakening set by Brannon’s work was no easy feat, though Marvin Contreras was sure to capitalize on the attentiveness of the audience in the reading of his poem “The Return,” and award-winning piece of prose, “The Brief Existence of an Incredible Hulk.” Clearly confused as to why Contreras had been called on the stage and then not made to leave as he read works back-to-back, anybody upon hearing his fluent vocabulary would be hardpressed to think of a reason for him to have not been a two-time winner. His humor elicited laughs and was a shoe-in amongst the writers in the building. And perhaps just when we all thought the best of the performances to have been presented, Sisan McNeil’s ardent reading of her poem
entitled “Portrait,” was a stunning display of verisimilitude that was unapologetically beautiful as the longing of the narrator was felt by all those in attendance. McNeill’s reading stood out amongst that of the other authors’ and matched performance value with Brannon’s in a way seems to suggest that big things are to follow in the future of these two authors whose deliverance of their works went above and beyond the expected. To close out the evening was Isis Cortes with her short story, “Public Pools” that made for quality entertainment and preponderant enough social commentary. The ending realization of Cortes’ story, ensures that she as an author would be not one bit out of place with renown and having her intricate work studied over the course of many readings.
An Evening of Dance: A Repertory Concert at Rio Hondo
MICHAEL KHURAIBET Digital Editor-in-Chief

The Rio Hondo College Dance Program hosted An Evening of Dance: A Repertory Concert on Thursday and Friday. Under the direction of Dr. Alyson Cartagena, the dance program is designed to “further the skills of both the dancer and non-dancer...” Students performed from the modern dance classes and dance repertory. There were also pieces by the Dance Collective, Rio Hondo’s touring dance troupe. Each segment of the concert was made up of a variety of dance styles, mainly ballet. World-renowned dance professionals such as Lar Lubovitch and the MN Dance
Company inspired many of the evening’s selections. Themes ranged from elegant, to sensual, to abstract. “You get to link music and emotions and you get to show that to people.” Most of the pieces at An Evening of Dance were staged by faculty members Dr. Cartagena, Lisa Jay, Kristina Urteaga, Rachel Lopez, Carol McDowell, and Paige Melvin Zink. However, a number of segments were choreographed and performed by students. David Bernal performed “Cocoon,” which he also wrote. As Bernal took the stage, fog filled the house to give the audience a unique atmosphere. Once on stage, he showed off an exotic solo set to tribal music. Bernal
earned sig praise, as he represented Rio Hondo at the 2018 American College Dance Festival. Bernal was also one of three students accepted into the Limón Dance Company’s West Coast Summer Program. The workshop provides students two weeks of training under Colin Connor, Limón’s artistic director. Bernal, as well as Jaylani De La Cruz, and Clarissa Caguioa all won scholarships to attend. Darlene Adams is a student in her first semester with the dance program. She described the synergy that comes with being a dancer and the thrill of performing. “You get to link music and emotions and you get to show that to people,” Adams said.

Aw Geez! 70 More Episodes of Rick And Morty Coming to Adult Swim RAMON ALVARADO Editor-in-Chief
ramon.alvarado7328@my.riohondo.edu
Aw geez! Co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon announced Thursday, May 10 that they’ve signed a deal to renew the hit ‘toon show Rick and Morty for 70(!) more episodes. There’s still no telling just when the fourth season of wild, portal-jumping adventures will be back on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Roiland made the announcement with a tweet containing a drawing of the stars of the show, Rick and Morty with some dialogue, thanks to text bubbles. “It’s official Morty. 70 more episodes Morty. You and me. 70 more Morty,” Rick says in the drawing. All Morty replies in his text bubble is his famous “aw, geez.” The last time we saw Rick
and his grandson go on a crazy adventure was October 1 of last year, when they found themselves in a war with the President in the White House. In a post-credit scene of the season three finale, one famous character makes an appearance and shares some information. “Ooh-wee, what a season,” Mr. Poopybutthole says as we sits with his new family. “See you for season four, in, like… a really long time.” Thursday’s announcement brought some relief to viewers, however. There’s been 31 episodes of Rick and Morty through three seasons so far. Now, the world is guaranteed to see more than double that amount in the future. Season one of Rick and Morty debuted back in October of 2013, leading a 11-episode run. Seasons two and three both featured 10 episodes each.
From this, fans can expect to see seven more seasons of Rick and Morty. There’s no telling if Roiland and Harmon will decide to switch it up. To help celebrate the huge news, the creators have launched the Rickmobile “Don’t Even Trip Road Trip 2018” pop-up shop. The popup shop truck will be selling exclusive clothing and more. The Rickmobile tour will begin May 18, in Atlanta, Georgia and conclude in Tallahassee, Fla. October 20. Rick and Morty fans in Los Angeles were left out on the first released schedule of Rickmobile stops. The pop-up shop will be in San Diego for five days, however, from July 18-July 22. With the Szechuan sauce at McDonald’s, the Rickmobile pop-up shop, and the 70-episode renewal announcement, the Rick and Morty hype train is set to get rolling again.

Man, the Avengers can’t get a break! Especially Tony Stark, if it’s not with Thanos invading destroying half the universe. Or some this that decided to break into a movie storage, and steal a real-life Iron Man suit. Yes, that last part actually happened. The original suit worn in the
original Iron Man, one the famous red and gold has been stolen, the very one that was worn by Robert Downey Jr. It was stolen at Pacoima warehouse officials claimed Wednesday morning. That suit is worth quite a lot of money 325,000 dollars to be exact. The suit was stolen on 13000 block of Weidner Street. And it was reported that it was stolen sometime between February and late
April this year. This was confirmed by the LAPD, and the worker who discovered that it was missing just decided to check if it was there then realized it was missing. Not a whole lot is known about the thief as of right now. The LAPD refused to say who owns the storage facility. To top things off, they have absolutely no idea who stole this iconic suit.
This Mother’s Day Netflix brought the gift of comedy to mothers by releasing female comic, Ali Wong’s second Netflix special titled, “Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife”. Wong was also writer for three season for ABC’s sitcom Fresh Off the Boat. Much like on her first special, Wong was pregnant and her special was released on Mother’s Day. Although, her material was a little different than from the first. It was Wong’s first special in two years, since she is now a mother to a two year-old daughter with another baby on the way, spoke about the painful and traumatizing truth of giving birth and early motherhood. She began her set by sharing how wrong she was about being a stay-at-home mom. What she thought was going to be a vacation was more like “solitary confinement all day long with this human Tamagotchi.” Wong was not ashamed to discuss the very disturbingly natural body changes a woman goes through after giving birth and the women of the crowd laughed at her honesty. She explained how breastfeeding has the same moral story as the children’s book The Giving Tree, where a tree gives all its livelihood and looks for a “freeloader”.
However, she still expresses her sexuality. She also tackled the issue of set gender roles when it comes to parenting. People have asked her questions while she is working of “who is taking care of the baby” and the praise dad’s receive for doing the bare minimum with their child. Even though it was for her stand-up, Wong turned her experience into jokes and made the women of the audience cheer her on. The female comic is a Vietnamese/Chinese, making most of her audience of Asian decent, an obvious example or representation mattering. This also means unlike white comics, she discussed the issue of racial stereotypes as an Asian woman who admits to not driving very well. “Thank you, thank you but f**k you, for assuming correctly about me,” as she talked about her experience of parallel parking. While the theme of her stand up was early motherhood, Wong also preached a lot of feminist ideas of being a working mom, maternity leave, and making more money than her Harvard graduate husband. Wong explains that while her mother believes a man would be intimidated by this, Wong said “the only kind of man that would leave a woman who makes more money, is the kind of man that doesn’t like free money.”

Spring Faculty Concert Here At Rio DIANA JUAREZ Reporter
diana.juarez8805@my.riohondo.edu
The Rio Hondo spring faculty concert took place last Tuesday April 17 at the Wray Theater. Professor Frank Accardo and his wife Donna Accardo, and Professor Jannine Livingston serenaded the crowd with chamber music and a surprise West Side Story instrumental performance at the end. Donna and Professor Livingston played violin and piano respectively and opened the concert with a somber and desolate interpretation of
Mercy by Max Richter. They dedicated the performance to the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre that left 14 students and 3 staff members dead. “This will be our reply to violence: To make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before,” read a quote from Leonard Bernstein in the concert’s program. Sonatina Op. 205 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco was a lighthearted performance by Frank and Livingston on guitar and piano respectively. The rest of the performances
had their lulls, but overall the night was fun. It was obvious from every seat in the Wray that Professor Frank Accardo, his wife Donna, and Professor Livingston really enjoyed themselves. The people in attendance ranged from students to community members and a couple of faculty. “This is a great thing to do for everyone,” said Teresa Sandoval, “free concerts are not always easy to come by and it’s important for me to have the opportunity to show my daughter the beauty of chamber music.”

The 22nd annual LA Times Festival of Books took place at USC this past week-
end April 21st and 22nd. Authors, poets, reporters, scholars, and everything in between gather in one spot to interact with their readers and audience. Rio Hondo’s very own Professor Mariano Zaro attended the festival, representing Beyond Baroque, a non-profit organization and one of the United States’ leading independent Literary | Arts Center. Born and raised in a little town near Zaragoza, Spain, professor Zaro teaches Spanish at Rio Hondo as well as being an accomplished poet and a member of the board of trustees for Beyond Baroque. On top of all that, professor Zaro is a part of various writ-
er’s groups. “I have four poetry books out, all bilingual, and four major anthologies,” said professor Zaro, “I have ‘The Coiled Serpent’ with Tía Chucha Press, ‘Wide Awake’ with Poets of Los Angeles and Beyond, and ‘Angle of Reflection’ which I published with other LA poets.” It was for the publishing of Angle of Reflection that professor Zaro read at the poetry stage at the LA Times Festival of Books last year. “Angle of Reflections is one of my more personal works, it’s definitely the one that’s closest to my heart because I wrote about my early childhood and growing up in Spain,” said professor Zaro.
It came as no surprise that when asked what his favorite event at the festival was, professor Zaro replied, “oh, the poetry stage. It is a great place to see all these amazing poets. There is something about the sound of someone reading their poems aloud that is very compelling.” “If I could say anything up aspiring writers of any kind is to check with yourself about what you have to say,” professor Zaro advises, “don’t say what other want. And be active, participate in workshops and contests. Writing can be a solitary activity and it is good to interact with other writers.

Rio Hondo’s Graphic Design Club hosted their first gallery show this month on the 18. The gallery will be opened for two weeks; it welcomes anyone to stop by and check out the amazing work these students have done, from creating parody album covers, to series of rock star portraits and music festival branding. Club member Justin Chow talked about some of the work the club did all together and the idea behind it. They created a parody with the use of a song “Smooth” by famous guitarist named Santana. The club members then took popular rock album covers and redesigned them with Santana’s song as the main title for each one. The song inspired

type of art, I haven’t really seen art with all these pieces together,” said Sismanov Barron. His project consisted of images of rock legends from the 60s and 80s; he took six of the top artists, such as Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, and other rock stars who died at the age of 27. He then split images of their face in half and created one face containing two artists. “I wanted to have two pieces be one,” he says. The club wants to keep working on creative projects such as the ones they have done. They have many more ideas for amazing graphic designs and can’t wait to show more students on campus. They will be having another gallery show on the 25 of April for those who are interested in stopping by and checking out their art.

The Lady Roadrunners fell to the Pasadena City College Lancers Friday, Feb. 16 at Rio Hondo. Pasadena City spoiled Sophomore Night at The Hondo as they defeated the Rio Ladies, 76-50. Rio fell behind quickly Friday night. They trailed PCC by 15 after the first quarter and 21 at the half. The Rio Ladies didn’t seem too rattled by the lop-sided score, though. Instead, the Lady Roadrunners kept their heads high as they fought until the game’s final buzzer. Sophomores Destinee Garr, Emily Mercedes and Maggie Lamas all played their final game in Rio’s whiteblack-and-gold uniforms. Garr had herself a solid all-around performance. She finished with four points, nine assists, six rebounds and five blocks. Lamas and Mercedes led the team in points, both with 14-a-piece. Lamas also had five rebounds and two steals, while Mercedes had seven rebounds, four assists and five steals to go with her 14 points. The three sophomores,

Garr, Lamas and Mercedes all spoke to El Paisano after their last game at Rio Hondo about their favorite memory with the team and what they’ll be moving onto post-Rio. They all had similar things to say. “As far as what school I’m going to, I’m still undecided… I’m trying to figure it out,” the Rio forward, Garr said. “Favorite memory…” Garr continued, as she glanced at Lamas and Mercedes who stood by her side, “Just playing with these guys. We go through our ups-and-downs, we get on each other’s nerves, but it’s all love. I love these guys.” Mercedes and Lamas are also undecided on what school they will be going to next, though both say they want to continue playing basketball wherever they end up. Lamas, who spoke to El Paisano last, drew some emotion out of her fellow sophomore Lady Roadrunners. “My favorite memory was just being with my teammates, especially [Garr and Mercedes],” Lamas said. The three Rio Ladies smiled at one another then laughed. Garr, Lamas and Mercedes came together for a group hug in their final moments as Lady Roadrunners.
