A former Connecticut high school substitute is being charged and accused of running a “fight club” in his classroom, police said. Ryan Fish, 23, is being accused for encouraging Montville High School students to fight and battle it out while out while other students recorded on their cellphones and cheered. “The truth is, I’m an idiot, and I wanted to befriend them,” Fish told investigators. The Montville Police Department started looking into the alleged “fight club’ last December when a social worker reported a 15-year-old who was traumatized after being beaten and robbed by his classmates. Fish was fired in October after school officials caught wind of the fight club inside of the classroom. There was a video of him encouraging students to fight as they were slapping each other. Another video Showed Fish moving a trash can out of the way in order to prolong the altercation. The fight only stopped after one of the students “threw up and was holding his head,” a participant said. ‘I would let them be teenagers and let them get their energy out,” FIsh told police in January when they interviewed him. “I will admit that I did at one point egg them on. Some students said that the slap boxing fights had round to them, which police believe might have indicated an organized event, according to the affidavit.
Altogether, Fish told police there were four fights that took place in the classroom between the months of September and October. Some of the boys from the classroom described Fish’s class as a “kick back class.” “I just try to be the teacher that kids could come to and actually express themselves and actually work through their issues,” Fish told police. “Kind of have a social thing.” His approach as a laidback teacher went too far, police said. One of the 16-year-old students involved in a fight called Fish his mentor. “He’s not a certified teacher,” Sgt. Mark Juhola of the Connecticut State Police told Hartford’s FOx 61.. “And it bothers me that so many teachers work so hard to get where they are ... that this wasn’t a teacher but he was in that role.” Fish pleaded not guilty to many of the charges such as risk of injury to a child, four counts of reckless endangerment and one count of breach of peace. The superintendent, Brian Levesque, said he did not report to the police after firing FIsh because he only knew about one fight and thought it was a different incident. He did not understand the scope of the matter until now. One student told the police that Fish told the class he smoked marijuana and tried other drugs, and allowed students to draw male body parts on the board, the warrant said. Fish’s bail is set to $75,000, according to the Courant.

Rio Hondo College is having workshops as part of the Violence Intervention Program (V.I.P) for the month of April which is Sexual Assault Awareness month. The goal of this program is to bring awareness on campus about sexual assault For this week there will be posters outside of the Student Union building that have statistics, facts, and myths about sexual assault. There are also stories about sexual assault survivors on the posters. There is a white board poster in which students
are encouraged to pin a blue ribbon on to support the program and help bring awareness. Students are also encouraged to wear the ribbon as well in order to help bring awareness to sexual assault. “What we’re having this week, Sexual Assault Awareness, pretty much for the whole month, we’ll have that there and with the poster, you kind of just make your mark,”,said Oralia Alcorta, 34, advocate and student for V.I.P. “So, whether you’re a survivor, or supporter, or you just want to make your mark, we’re encouraging students to get a ribbon and place it on the whiteboard. It will stay
throughout the whole month to bring awareness. It’s important everyone knows April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.” There is going to be a resource fair on April 25 in which different agencies will come out to provide services, resources, brochures, and see what they can provide for the students. A Denim Day event will also take place on the same day from 11am to 2pm in honor of survivors on Denim Day. The Violence Intervention Program has more than one advocate on campus. They provide services for the students. The students do not have to be sexual assault victims or survivors. They can just come to the program for resources. Aside from helping out students who are going through sexual assault, stalking, etc., the program also helps out students who need additional help such as housing, counseling and other resources. “We’re a program that wants to help students with additional resources,” Alcorta said. “We do specialize and we did get the training for sexual assault and domestic violence but if a student came in and said, ‘I don’t have enough money for food’, we can refer them to our pantry or “I don’t have somewhere to live’ or ‘I’m going through this’, we can refer them.” As for helping to end sexual assault and domestic violence, Alcorta believes it is important for students to know that they “have a voice” and not be in silent about being sexually assaulted. For any more information regarding the Violence Intervention Program, visit the Student Union building.

It’s been five years since the bombing of the Boston Marathon took place in 2013. This past Sunday was its official anniversary, many citizens participated in a city wide moment of silence at exactly 2:49 pm to commemorate the exact time the bomb was set off. It was April 1, 2013 at 2:49 p.m. when two bombs, set up by brothers Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, where deadinated at the finish line of the marathon. The explosion killed three pedestrians and injured up to 250 others, both runners and bystanders. Tamerlan was then shot to death in a police shootout hours following the incident. Dzhokhar was later captured and sentenced to death row. Many events took place on the anniversary of this tragic event to remember those affected. One being a group of runners not running the average course but running one that spelled out “Boston”. This run takes a total of 7.3Km and 43 minutes to complete. This specific run has been a tradition since two weeks after the bombing took place. Held by Triathlon team Zoom Multisport, they started #BostonRun. With terrorist attacks like these becoming another norm in our society, FBI and other agencies have been trying to learn from mistakes and work harder to prevent anything like this to happen again. Since the attack, security procedures around the country with event venues and sport areas have become a lot stricter. For this years race participants have been given an app to download called BHM 26.2 that will send out notifications just in case of a sort of emergency will take place.

A Noise Within’s “A Raisin In The Sun” Is Flawless DANTE LOPEZ BENNET Reporter
dante.lopezbennett9611@my.riohiondo.edu
Sunday, April 8- the 7 p.m. finale performance of Lorrain Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” saw audience members shed tears, laugh, and erupt to their feet in fervent ovation following the show’s endnote. While the majority of reviews are often quick to be written, there are rare instances in which any writer would be hard-pressed to think of the words with which they can begin to set out on trying to capture the essence of the rare feeling that was underway. As the show’s tentative run came to a close following its seasonal showcase, the performers seemed to leave absolutely every bit of skill they possessed onstage. Prior to the appearance, it was evident that this final showing garnered considerable attention. The playroom was packed to the nine, with additional seating needing to be rolled out. With an audience of sheer diversity in attendance, there was no shortage of conversational topics that ranged from politics to gossip. Little did the unsuspecting socialites know that in the following moments, would a performance follow that was to have them in tears as it represented the pinnacle of dramatic art. A spectacle to be beheld indeed, from the first fifteen minutes it was apparent that to achieve something entirely different was the goal of the
cast. As they maneuvered and argued their respective ways out of bed in their cramped Chicago apartment. total immersion was underway. As the lights dimmed signaling that a procession was now underway, the audience was awe-struck at just how hyper-realistic the opening lines of the play were delivered. By the end of the first minute, it didn’t feel as though these were rehearsed actors, but rather, a family who had been accustomed to living with one another for years on end. The suspenseful and foreboding introduction of the Walter Lee predicament immediately seized the attention of spectators so that they knew it was time to put the phones away and bear witness to the trials and tribulations of family life. Director Gregg T. Daniel knew absolutely well what he was doing at the creative helm of the production and his expertise showed in the authentic depiction of an African-American Family in Chicago attempting to gain foothold in an America still marred by racial prejudice. The money-crazed and maddened brow of Ben Cain’s Walter Lee Younger, and mortified expression of Saundra McClain’s Lena made for encounters that were brilliant. We laughed and smiled at Cain’s depiction of Walter as a loving father, and cried out to implore him of his grave misdeeds as he transitioned into a man possessed by selfish ambition and the accumu-
lation of wealth. While most reviews have made a custom out of highlighting standout performances, it would be an injustice to do so for all sakes and purposes as absolutely every cast member was out for blood it seemed. They performed as though the weakest link had to jump from the roof. As a seamless articulation of Hansberry’s deep cutting words turned to slick transitions between the time of day, the entire production was revealing itself to be the unfolding of an epic narrative. The cast, in modern day and modest garb appeared as natural as fish in their bowl who seemingly did not notice the surrounding audience. It almost felt as though if we, as the audience, had intruded upon a family in its most intimate of times who fearfully contemplated their future. With respect to the decorum on stage, and artistic direction, Sets to Go and Props Master Erin Walley were evidently meticulous on what objects would best relay sentiment. Anne Jude’s management of the stage lent a logistical hand to the transitions between scenes that needed to be quick. The decision to make the family’s only mirror and window facing the audience functioned as a brilliant figurative and literal poetic device. With regards to performances, the cast infallibly put on a memorable production. Whether it was Amir
Abdullah, or Keith Walker’s depiction of Joseph Asagai and George Murchison respectively, the love interests of Beneatha, the omnipotent realization of how important seemingly innocuous everyday encounters in life can really be was realized by the audience who were hysterically receptive to the major decisions of characters. Sarah Hollis’ ardent depiction of the outspoken intellectual Beneatha Younger was a bonafide expression of what masterclass dramatics entail as her witty responses and undying resolve lit up the household. Ruth Younger, portrayed by Toya Turner, was a heartfelt monolith of a performance that left audience members absolutely in tatters as the intricate nature of her role as a mother and wife played the only anchor to Walter’s incessant downward spiral. Ben Cain as Walter Lee Younger was as much of an accomplishment as it was an astonishment. With a relative ease did Mr. Cain seem able to assume an entirely new persona and make for a standout portrayal of a character depicted by so many distinguished actors. The bright-eyed and naive nature of Travis Younger was achieved by Sam Christian who only added to the emotional depth and truistic value of the way in which the production framed the story itself. The debonair depiction of racial prejudice incarnate by Bert Emmett’s Karl Lindner was enough to make your skin crawl.

TJ Miller Being Federally Charged For Faking Bomb Threat VINCENT FRANCO Reporter
vincent franco@my.riohondo.edu
Thirty-six year old Actor T.J. Miller is being federally charged with calling in a fake bomb threat on a Amtrak Train this past March. Miller was arrested this Monday and is facing up to five years in Federal Prison. According to CNN, before being released on $100,000 bond, Miller was accused of “intentionally conveying to law enforcement false information about an explosive device.” This all started when Miller was on a supposed train ride inside of Amtrak Train 2256 from Washington DC to Penn Station in New York City. From there he dialed 911 and told the dispatcher that the girl sitting in front of him was hiding a bomb inside of her bag. Miller stated in a report that the lady “kept checking her bag without taking anything out; kept asking the first-class attendant what the next stop was, and seemed to want to get off the train and leave her bag behind.” Officials at Amtrak stopped the train in Westport, Connecticut so passengers could exit the train and let a bomb squad investigate, ultimately there was no bomb found. The next day investigators connected Miller for more information, to where he gave a different description of the girl and to find that Miller was actually traveling on train 2258, not 2256. To add to all of this Miller was actually reported to seem intoxicated and was seen arguing with the lady sitting across from him in the train. It’s been a rough couple of years for the Ex-silicon valley actor. From being arrested in 2016 for alleged battery, being accused of sexual assault, and even bing written off his long time show Silicon Valley.

FTC Comes In Defense of the People JAIME APARICIO Reporter

A Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act passed in 1975 states that any manufacturer cannot deem the warranty placed on a product void if the consumer were to try and fix their purchase themselves, or take said purchase to an authorized retailer. Matthew Gault from Motherboard took to the forums to shed light on the matter and inform consumers of the legallity behind the supposed warranties “The Federal Trade Commission put six companies on notice today, telling them in a warning letter that their warranty practices violate federal law. If you buy a car with a warranty, take it a repair shop to fix it, then have to return the car to the manufacturer, the car company isn’t legally allowed to deny the return because you took your car to another shop. The same is true of any consumer device that costs more than $15, though many manufacturers want you to think otherwise. Companies such as Sony and Microsoft pepper the edges of their game consoles with warning labels telling customers that breaking the seal voids the warranty. That’s illegal.” Apparently, the stickers describing the warranty and the possibility of a void still cause a steady flow of confused consumers going back to the originator of the product in fear of voiding the warranty. Such companies such as Apple do not offer specifics as to which one of their products are subject to be voided if tampered with. With the confusion over-taking the customer, most people who purchase from the juggernaut company go back to the Genius Bar for assistance rather than attemting to fix the problem on their own. Gault continues to point out that although the FTC has only brought the warranty issue to the forefront once, they at least made an effort to inform consumers of the problem.

What’s one thing that Facebook and Uber has in common? It’s that the two of these can’t stay out of the news and it’s always for bad reasons. And it seems that everyone’s favorite billionaire Mark Zuckerberg got away with selling away people’s information. Zuckerberg went to Washington DC because of a data breach, from a company called Cambridge analytica. What they did was manipulate Facebook to getting millions of people’s data and selling then to whoever they wanted. And oh yeah all of this was done without the users consent. What they’re most known for is using this information and selling it to the Trump administration. He had a total of two hearing that lasted just two days. The first hearing he had couldn’t of gone better than it did for him. Most if not all of the government officials in that hearing seemed a little too old to even understand what Facebook even was. This officials seemed to be a little bit more on the ball and aware of Facebook, but not all of them. It was made clear that Zuckerberg had a feature on Facebook that no one else had that enabled him to delete sent messages completely from Facebook. But after that en-

A more notable one was in Canada and they were basically the Canadian version of Cambridge. Even throughout this whole breach Zuckerberg said his very own data was compromised. Even that they’re doing everything they can to catch fake Russian accounts, that convince people to vote one way more
than an other. Even though his company had known about this information breach for about 27 months, it was a business decision to not inform there user’s. But now on Facebook they is a page that will inform you if your data has been used in this breach although it is a little vague on if it was you or a friend. It seems to be that more laws will be put in place now to notify people if there data is used in something like this ever again. And it’s no secret

Well it seems that TG (Twin Galaxies) have stripped Mitchell of his title of being the first person to ever reach a million points on Donkey Kong. The reason for this sudden decision is because it was revealed that he was using an emulator. An emulator is something that you can easily download on your phone or computer, that will allow you to play all sorts of classic video games. TG was able to reach 1,047,200 points by using an emulator being crowned the top player at the time. TG went on to say “The rules for submitting scores for the original ar-
cade”Donkey Kong” competitive leaderboards requires the use of original arcade hardware only,” according to the group. “The use of MAME or any other emulation software for submission to these leaderboards is strictly forbidden.” Mitchell was first brought into the limelight of holding this record, because of a documentary being filmed at the time. “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. 2007”. And in that film he did come across as a bad guy too. This scandal was brought to light by a man named Jeremy Young. He was certain that there was no way he could possibly reach that enormous score. So after that many experts and pros went on to investigate him and the final verdict was that, he did indeed in fact cheat to achieve his score.

Oldest Fossil From Saudi Arabia Changes Our Story and Timeline GILBERTO ESPAÑA Reporter

Researchers have found the oldest remains in the Nefud Desert of Saudi Arabia from early humans outside of Africa and the nearby Mediterranean Levant region. A single bone from a Homo sapiens finger which is at least 85,000 to 90,000 years old, and was published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution. The finger was discovered in an area rich with stone tools as well as the fossilized bones and remains of hippos and freshwater snails. As the finger was discovered, the clues are evidence that early human migrations were likely more frequent than many people expected.
Huw Groucutt who is the lead author of the University of Oxford said “ This discovery for the first time conclusively shows that early members of our species colonized an expansive region of southwest Asia and were not just restricted to the Levant”. The first Homo sapiens evolved in Africa as far back as 300,000 years ago. Early humans are known to have reached the Levant, a region of the Mediterranean adjacent to Africa, about 177,000 years ago. Researchers discovered the finger bone at a site called Al Wusta in the Nefud Desert. 90,000 years ago the site was on the bank of a freshwater lake. The site was first discovered to be significant 2014. As researchers used a method known as uranium series dating, they

The reason for Judge Warby’s passing of NT2’s case was due to the climant having “remorse” for his conviction while NT1 “has not accepted his guilt, [and] misled the public and this court, and shows no remorse over any of these matters.” “Before anyone meets a new person these days they Google them,” says Hugh Tomlinson who represented NT1 in his client’s losing case. figured out that the finger bone dates back approximately 88,000 years. Donald O. Henry who is an anthropologist from the University of Tulsa wrote in an article “ Tracing the evolution and geographic dispersal of the human lineage is rather like connecting pitifully few dots on a vast three-dimensional grid of time and space”. The finger bone can be definitively identified as belonging to Homo sapiens and not other species of hominin. Humans may have regularly migrated from Africa to surrounding regions whenever weather supported those movements like it would be at Al Wusta. The finger bone found in the Nefud Desert of Saudi Arabia is the oldest fossil from Homo sapiens ever found outside of Africa and

The list of the River’s Voice winners finally posted up last week and among them was the first place memoir winner, Michael Khuraibet. His award winning piece was about his transgender sister and her transition but wrote it in way that made the transition more of a plot twist to the genre. He was inspired by his oldest sister’s reaction to the experience, “She treated it as though it was a mourning period, like the loss of her brother.” It was through this fame of a losing a brother that helped give Khuraibet a twist to his unforgettable story. His then brother was the one sibling of the three he had the best relationship with due to their closeness in age and that they were brothers among their two older sisters. Together they understood and guided each other in the ways they knew they could. The foundation of their relationship was being

The remains of a gigantic marine reptile have been found in Southwestern England. The reptile is known as Shonisaurus, an Ichthyosaur the animal who lived about 205 million years ago and was up to 85 feet long which is almost as big as a blue whale. Many biology textbooks have mentioned that the modern blue whale is the largest animal that ever lived. Shonisaurus also referred to as Ichthyosaur, have contemporaries of the dinosaurs, with body shapes similar to dolphins. They reached their greatest diversity about 210 million years ago in the late Triassic. Ichthyosaur vanished from the fossil record about 25 million years before the mass extinction. Most Ichthyosaur were much smaller than the new crea-
tures and the species have been found in the United Kingdom were 5 to 11 feet long. Paul De Salle who is a fossil hunter and study co-author were combing the beach at Lilstock in May 2016 when he found a large and puzzling chunk of fossil bone. De Salle sent images to marine reptile experts Dean Lomax at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and Judy Massare at SUNY Brockport in New York. Research shows that five fossil pieces together to form a bone 3.2 feet in length, which scientists identify as being from the lower jaw of an Ichthyosaur. Based on the size of the bone, scientists believe the reptile was bigger than any other discovered. Scientists traveled to Alberta, Canada, and examined the much more complete fossil of Shonisaurus sikanniensis, a 69-foot long Ichthyosaur found in
2004. Dean Lomax says the discovery had led them to reinterpret a whole chunk of isolated bones found near the village of Aust in Gloucestershire, England. Scientists realized the pieces also belonged to giant ichthyosaurs and possibly even bigger than the identified animal. Darren Naish, a paleontologist at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom agrees that the sizes of all these bones are astounding. He examined the Aust bones and similarly concluded that they belonged to enormous ichthyosaurs. The Ichthyosaurs bones were compared to the Aust bones and they were much larger than expected. Dean Lomax discovered fragments which appeared to be the limb or other bones of terrestrial dinosaurs which never made sense.

It’s Time to Pay College Athletes IGNACIO CERVANTES Reporter
ignacio.cervantes8813@my.riohondo.edu
Let’s face it, you and I turn our televisions onto College Football to watch players like Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama Crimson Tide rookie quarterback, make big plays on the big stage. Against the Crimson Tigers in the Football Bowl Subdivision National Championship game, he performed exceptionally well and had us glued to our screens. We watch these games because these electrifying athletes motivate us and
provide a similar product that the National Football League players do. Therefore, they should be rewarded as such. These players deserve to get a share of the profits just like the players in the NFL do. The National Collegiate Athletic Association claims themselves to be a “non-profit” when in reality, all this money must be going somewhere. Yet they have the audacity to claim to be a philanthropic group. Two years ago, the NCAA shifted its one-game championship system into a threegame playoff which increased
the revenue by millions once it was introduced that a semifinal round would be added. According to an article from CBS News online, the College Football Playoff alone generates $600 million a year. The players are dedicating their lives to the sport and do not see any of the millions of dollars in profits that come out of the playoffs. The dedication to practice and providing publicity for the big game is as intensive as what NFL players experience. According to economist Andy Schwartz, College Football’s Division I revenue
for the 2013-2014 season was calculated at $3.4 billion from ticket and merchandising sales, athletic department donations, and television contracts. Coaches, athletic directors, assistant coaches’ salaries continue to increase, yet the players continue to get ignored. Something as little as an extra thousand dollars or so a year given as a grant to be used for miscellaneous equipment or necessities to keep up with the STUDENT-athlete lifestyle. But in 2012 when ESPN signed a $7.3 billion contract
with the FBS for 12 years of television rights to the new playoff format, the money continued to fall into the pockets of the wrong people. There are 85 players on a roster with college scholarships and that’s earned from football talent. Just being a reason as to why such large quantities of money is being made is reason enough to pay them something on top of the scholarship. Because if someone made lots of money from exposing your talents, you would like a reap of the benefits as well.

short term but benefit society long term. The problem with this philosophy is that just because you give all this new found wealth to the businesses and the rich doesn’t mean that they are going to use this money to pay it forward. In an article by ThinkProgress named, “Trickle-down economics at work: Just two percent of Americans have received a ‘tax bill bonus’” found that only two percent of americans will receive a bonus in wages as a result of the republican tax plan to cut the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent. Only 13 percent from polling found by this article said that they believe this tax cut will benefit the middle class. And it seems they would be right as this article found from ThinkProgress’ own analysis found that over 50 businesses planning to award non executive employees with a ‘“tax bill bonus” only a miniscule 0.1 percent of the trillion dollar corporate tax cut would be spent on employee bonuses. Right now in America, a more modern gilded age is now part of the bedrock of our modern society. American economic inequality is hitting the middle and lower classes hard without much cushioning the blow in a Trump era presidency. Economic mobility over the last 50 years for groups of minorities has only deteriorated according to an article by ABC news examining this issue. This study looked at a the previous 1968 Kerner Report as its support beam. The
article stated that the study blamed US politicians for not enacting policies to help the American people. The article received a quote from former Democratic Senator Fred Harris from Oklahoma: “racial and ethnic inequality is growing worse. We’re resegregating our housing and schools again.” The very same article looked at different study pertaining to the subject of American income equality and found disturbing results. Of the people living in deep poverty, less than half of the federal poverty has increased since 1975. About 46 percent of the people classified as living in deep poverty in 2016. That was 16 percent higher the previous numbers in 1975. The study in the mentioned article looked at schooling in low income impoverished neighborhoods. The study stated that in 1988, there were 44 percent of Black students that went to largely Caucasian schools. As of today that number has dropped by more than half the same study found. Now as bleak and lost the light of our democratic republic might seem, the path towards our government working for us again is a hard one, there are measures for getting our economy working for us again. Harry S. Truman said, “you can’t get rich in politics unless you’re a crook.” The biggest slice of the pizza we need to get rid of metaphorically speaking is getting our economy work-
ing for us again is to get big money out of politics. When corporations were declared “people” by the US Supreme Court and removed Glass Steagall that removed commercial banks being involved in the US banking and investment systems. The removal of Glass Steagall allowed corporations and the powerfully wealthy to funnel millions in lobbyist money to our politicians. This “legal” bribery without a doubt is corruption and affects our elected leaders. Another important step we can take is to make our elections for all of our officials publicly funded. If our politicians didn’t go towards the powerful and corporations to fund the next election cycle in order to keep themselves elected, the more focus could be placed on their constituents. Officials approval ratings would in theory be more directly connected. We as a people elected them, about time they represent us instead of the likes of Tide, Exon, and Viacom. Now, the last suggestion maybe the most vital and it is less policy and more worldview changes. We as a society worship hardwork and ethic like it is religion. Now although it is a testament towards the American dream, we often just look like success stories and nothing else. If we a society, would lend a helping hand to one another instead of being selfish with our own lives.

Where things have no repercussion, there are bound to be truths revealed. It’s odd that in a day of decadence, political correctness is still enforced. Truth and humor walk a fine line between one another you see, as things in reality are as far fetched as all hell and far from our perceived stereotypes often. Racism in comedy for all intents and purposes is a paradox of sorts as we laugh at what we understand too well, and what we can’t understand at all. In case you haven’t noticed, there’s no in-between here in the art of entertainment and performance. It turns out that reality’s really a beach, with plenty of grains of salt to be had by conservative analysts looking for statements to grab and make an example out of. While race is undoubtedly still a contentious issue across the word, it would only make sense for it to find its way into the mainstream annals of media as entertainment is derived straight from modern day phenomena, and truth, from what is cast

on screen to the masses. For in reality and the minds of the many, what is truth but not the thing most readily observed? It is for this often explicit reason that racism, (a phenomena so painfully real and observed today) is a thing still found funny in comedy. Paradoxically, the appeal of humor teeters in between two tenets of knowledge. The abundance or absence of it. We laugh at the ridiculously stacked with knowledge nerd like Urkel, or at the callously and slow ignorant country bumpkin like Forrest Gump. Seldom are we entertained by the average or normal caricature of humanity, that is quite frankly observed everywhere and day in our offices, classrooms, etc. Truly think about it. We’re only humored by what we understand. Though ironically, our attempts at trying to make sense of the very things we cannot, the most far fetched, is so often that makes things funny. Comedy, and Racism being funny in comedy, is derived from making fantastical sense of the things that we know we cannot in reality, though it is our attempt at
trying to understand no matter how foolishly put or stated. Since I couldn’t tell you why white and black men were created, I could at least tell you what it is I find so funny about them in an attempt at understanding this madness we’ve all been thrust into. Comedy, in the context of today’s so distinguished, organized, and political correct climate I find, is abstract reasoning. I mean, you tell me if the man who can hijack a plane with a butterknife deserves the plane or not. I can sit here and bawl about babies on the corner in the hood of low-income communities and how Chappelle himself can afford to do something most black people in America can’t, “think about it,” but truth be told it’s a comic’s very own attempt to make sense of the things in their environment that fuels our laughter. Us humans, with all our wit and ways crave displays of superiority so that we may aspire to emulate that very thing. It’s an absolute art form when one can take the plight they face and turn it into prosperity and aware-
ness on certain issues no matter the intellectual capacity of those in the audience. While one person’s recreation is another’s reality, it pays to know that Comedy is a form of action that ought to be heralded as one of the many disciplines as one of the two major phenomena that change the world: art, Lest we resort to the second, pain, from not having a discussion of the so very ridiculous differences that exist between us humans. With virtually no context can we laugh at something, because if surely it were our pain, we wouldn’t. In reality, we’re so fearfully unable to even to have the wits and innate empathy with which to comprehend the fear of truth’s infallibility. Empathy is made and gauged, and on the frontlines of the clash between art and pain that creates culture, sadly absent. Though while comics may appear callous and misled (it would appear a very many of them are admittedly I can’t even lie), one thing remains. They are perhaps history’s most perplexed and daring.
Customer Service Sucks Because of Capitalism JOSE AHUMADA Reporter

We have all heard the slogan “the customer is always right.” Whenever we hear this, we image a customer being rude to an employer, demanding free things because of a little mistake, or often times being disrespectful for no reason. We have not considered though, that companies place too much emphasis on this and it often backfires. Too often, we think about how the customers are rude or how people should not expect “free stuff,” but we never take into consideration the way businesses try to get their employees to live too strictly by this slogan which usually backfires. The slogan “the customer is always right” was originally coined in 1909 by Harry Gordon Selfridge, the founder of Selfridge’s department store in London.
This phrase is typically used to convince employers to give good customer service and ensure that customers will get good service. Ironically, this phrase can backfire and typically make employees unhappy and lead to worse customer service. It is bad for businesses since it gives an unfair advantage to customers who view their power as akin to always being right. Employees can be mistreated at their job by customers for trivial errors, when really, the customer is abusing their power of always being right according to the slogan. Big businesses and companies that carry out customer service are mainly owned by a capitalistic system in which the owners control the factors of production and all their income comes from their own ownership. Capitalism distributes goods and services through the law of supply and demand which is good for business-
es when it comes to hiring workers and making profit. It is also good for economic growth. However, like every other system, there are always certain disadvantages that come. Since capitalism does not provide for those who do not have competitive skills which include the elderly, children, disabled, and caretakers, it seems like inequality is in the best interest when it comes to having a capitalistic system. Some points to consider when it comes to employees is that by putting the customers first ahead of the employees, it makes them feel like they are not allowed to be respected by customers, not valued, and ultimately, that they are not allowed to be treated fairly. If this mindset continues, then the employees will no longer care about providing good customer service which is not good for the employer, employee, and business. CEO Hal Rosenbluth wrote
a book called The Customer Comes Second- Put Your People First And Watch’em Kick Butt. He argued that by putting the employees first, it also puts the customers first which is a win-win in itself. Employees will be happier, more energetic, and more motivated at work. In his book, he wrote, “There is probably nothing we believe in more strongly than the importance of happiness in the workplace. It is absolutely the key to providing superior service. Of course our clients are the reason for our existence as a company, but to serve our clients best have to put our people first.” If companies put more emphasis on caring for the employees, it would be a win-win for everybody and business would be good for employers and employees.

The game started out strong for our Roadrunners with starting pitcher Isaiah Ramos keeping Chaffey from scoring the first three innings. To match the strong pitching, the Roadrunners came out swinging. Second baseman Marcos Rivas hit a triple in the bottom of the second, bringing in three runs for his team. Despite the strong start, the momentum didn’t carry into the bottom innings with six runs coming in for Chaffey at the top of the 5th, putting them ahead 7-5. Scoring a run, the Roadrunners were close to tying the score heading into the 6th. Reliever Andrew Quillen came in for the inning, but Panther Christian Valdez hit a home run with bases loaded leaving the score 11-6. The Roadrunners left Chaffey College with a win, ending their streak of bad luck. The Roadrunner squad now has a record of 12-20 heading into their final six games of the year. They’ll have a three-game series against Mt. SAC this week, then have a trio of games against Pasadena City College next week to finish the season. Rio’s series against Mt. SAC begins today, April 17 at The Jungle at Rio Hondo, with the first pitch set to be thrown at 2:30 p.m. With only three conference losses for Mt. SAC and 11 for Rio Hondo, the Mounties and Roadrunners have been trending in opposite directions. The Mounties find themselves in first place of the South Coast Conference. The Roadrunners are looking to end the season on a high note, though. They’ll be looking to build some positives for next year’s returners to lean on, and the sophomores will be looking to finish their careers strong.
