El Paisano Shines at SoCal JACC Conference

The El Paisano staff attended the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ (JACC) Southern California Conference on Oct. 14 at Cal State Fullerton. Placing in on-the-spot and

mail-in contests, El Paisano came away with a total of nine awards that Saturday evening. Journalism students from all around southern California flooded into Cal State Fullerton’s student union building to attend workshops, listen to keynote speakers and compete in on-the-spot

competitions. The JACC event kicked off with keynote speaker Walter Baranger. Baranger had spent more than 40 years with the New York Times. His speech was the topic of the event’s News Writing and Opinion El Paisano’s Editor-in-Chief, Ramon Alvarado was awarded third place

in the News Writing competition while News Editor Noah Garcia’s Opinion piece won first place. Alvarado also picked up an honorable mention in the JACC Critical Review competition. Former editor-in-chief Diego Crespo received a fourth place award in Illustration for one of his pieces of
