ith a title as strong as the one given there should be some shock. However, not mistitled, Dr. Montgomery and his team at N.Y.U Langone Health have done it. They have successfully transplanted a pig kidney into a human, but what does this mean? The success of the procedure now brings up many questions. Conducted by Dr. Montgomery the procedure involved attaching the kidney to the blood vessels in the upper leg of the patient. The kidney in use came from a genetically altered pig. Using gene editing and cloning allows for the pig (s) to grow organs that are less likely to be rejected by a human. This was done by removing a pig gene that “encodes a sugar molecule” that causes a human rejection response. The pig was genetically engineered by Revivicor and FDA approved as human therapy. When it comes to the patient at hand, due to ethical dilemmas, the patient was brain dead. Through the permission given by the patient's family, after attaching the kidney they monitored its progress for 54 hours. After which
it was called a success seeing as the kidney took “almost immediately” and continued to function properly. What does this mean now? Will we start having people walking around with pig organs? Over 100,000 Americans are on the transplant list and 90,240 of those people need a kidney transplant. With the success of this surgery there might be a way for many of these people to get the organs they need. However, there are multiple different things to take into consideration before assuming this is the magic fix. First and foremost is the long term effects of a xenotransplantation. Or the lack of knowledge that we have of those effects. Then moral and ethical dilemmas come into the question. Are we truly willing to raise millions of pigs a year just to harvest their organs for ourselves. On top of the 100 million we kill annually in the U.S. for food. With all that aside, how far are we from seeing this practice regularly? The truth is no one has a definitive answer. Some say we can possibly see it within a few months, while others say this is only the first step of many to come. Whether it happens today, tomorrow, or years from now this is still a huge accomplishment and step forward in medicine.

California Lawsuit Against Activision Blizzard Complicates Following Federal Settlement Brandon R amirez Opinion Co-Editor

he lawsuit filed against games company Activision Blizzard by the California Department for Employment and Housing (DFEH) has been strained following the results of a separate lawsuit by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The DFEH ran a two year long investigation of the gaming developer culminating in a lawsuit in July. The EEOC also carried out an investigation and lawsuit parallel to the DFEH. The EEOC lawsuit resulted in
a settlement for $18 million dollars. This caused issues for the case being built by the DFEH. The settlement essentially gives Activision Blizzard the OK to seal (a lot of sources site destroy) evidence vital to the DFEH case. The DFEH sought to dispute, however their request was denied by the EEOC. Notably, due to a conflict in interest, and a breach of California law. Two attorneys who worked for the EEOC, when they were investigating claims that led to the eventual settlement, are in leadership roles for the DFEH team and are now objecting to the settlement. In response
the DFEH, according to the EEOC memorandum, hired new lawyers but were still using material acquired from when the two lawyers were still part of the case. The EEOC is now pushing to bar the entire DFEH case essentially. They claim that there’s no real way to ensure that there was no involvement from the two lawyers, especially because they were overseeing the case. Meaning the two year investigation is at risk, and would potentially have to be redone. This would come with its own issues, like precedent and the fact that Activision Blizzard now knows of the investigation. As things stand now, the DFEH is Continued on pg.3 ▶

Even worse, Activision Blizzard's management does not acknowledge that their actions harmed their workers, viewing the settlement as a very small price to pay to rid themselves of a 'distraction. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sent a message that corporate bad actors will not be held accountable for their abuse of workers. This sentiment has been echoed throughout much of the gaming community, with many upset with the settlement and possible altogether loss of the DFEH case. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick’s response has been called a step in the right direction by commentators in the games community. Kotick has ended the forced arbitration that Activision Blizzard would handle harassment claims with. Arbitration was one of the work-
place aspects that has been heavily criticized. In a letter regarding progress the company has made following the initial response from a while back, Kotick also explained the launch of a zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment. “Any Activision Blizzard employee found through our new investigative processes and resources to have retaliated against anyone for making a compliance complaint will be terminated immediately. In many other instances of workplace misconduct, we will no longer rely on written warnings: termination will be the outcome, including in most cases of harassment based on any legally protected category” iterated Kotick in the letter. Furthermore Kotick explained “Specifically, I have asked the Board to reduce my pay to the lowest amount California law will allow for people earning a salary, which this year is $62,500” . The pay cut also comes after a large pay raise Kotick recently received. The issues facing the case are still on the table, regardless Activision Blizzard seems to be responding to the issues in their work environment.

ovember 1st marks the first day of the traditional Mexican holiday, Día de Los Muertos. Every year from November 1st to November 2nd, many families come together to celebrate their relatives that have passed away. The tradition is, the night of October 31st is when the gates of heaven open letting the deceased be able to spend time with their family. November 1st is for the innocent children also known as, “el Día de los Inocentes.” November 2nd is known as the day of the dead, this day is for all the adults to return and spend time with their families. However, after 24 hours the spirits will return. On this two-day special holiday, families will celebrate with other family members by getting together and having dinner or participating in any traditional holiday activities. Over three thousand years ago, the Aztecs who lived in what is now known as Central Mexico started celebrating the holiday that many Mexican families celebrate today. The Aztecs viewed death as forever present in life.
The origin is tied with the pre-Hispanic Aztec rituals as well as the goddess Mictecacihuatl. The Lady of the Dead allowed the deceased to venture back to earth to reunite with their loved ones. It is said when a person is deceased they are to go on this journey and must complete nine levels to find their soul. Alas, once completing
their challenging journey they can be put to rest in Mictlán. A big tradition that families do during Día de Los Muertos is to set up altars for their deceased loved ones. These altars will have pictures of loved ones, candles, food, drinks, and other offerings. It’s also important to have some cempasúchil placed on the altar. The name
cempasúchil comes from the Aztecs, the name means marigold flower. The traditional flowers are meant to help lead the deceased back to their loved ones' homes. It adds cheerfulness to families' altars and overall celebratory nature. "An altar just isn't complete without them. And if you believe what the Aztecs

believed, then your ancestors need the scent to find their way back to you," Angie Jimenez tells NPR. She made sure to add the traditional flowers to her altar for her deceased loved ones. The production of marigolds has increased over the last couple of years because of Disney Pixar's 2017 Coco. "That could be why you see marigolds everywhere now. Before they were more a specialty item and you'd only see them for a short time," says Bob Mellano, vice president of wholesale operations for Mellano & Co. "they're a must have for wholesalers, flower shops and even grocery stores." Mellano said when October 1st arrived. The celebrations have evolved so much over the past few years. The discrimination that Hispanics received by non-Hispanics discouraged and scared them from being comfortable with their ethnicity. However, the younger generations have learned to not be afraid of those who discriminate and continue delving into their cultures.

ith the passing of yet another Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. Thanksgiving is great and all thanks to the food people get to eat, but Halloween and Christmas have always been my favorite holidays. Not just because of the trick or treating and presents, but because of the wonderful atmosphere they both bring. However, every holiday just doesn’t feel the same to me anymore. I remember always feeling excited whenever a major holiday was coming up for many reasons. One of those reasons was because of the goodies that come with each specific holiday. Easter and Halloween both come with lots of candy and that’s always a good thing. I loved Easter because of the classic easter egg hunt game that allows children to discover easter eggs filled with candy. I loved Halloween even more though because I got to dress up as some of my favorite characters while receiving free candy. Another reason was because of the delicious food that I would eat every thanksgiving. The anticipation of biting into a juicy slice of ham and smoked turkey was almost too much to handle. Also, spending time with members of my family who I did not seen very often was great as well. Then there’s Christmas. This was probably my most anticipated holiday of the year because it is very close to my birthday. So, naturally, I would be bouncing off the walls with excitement whenever Dec. rolled around. Besides being close to my birthday, Christmas is a favorite of mine because of the decorations. Seeing the beautiful lights on houses and presents under the Christmas tree are enough to make any Christmas fan happy. Moreover, being able to take time off from school for two to three weeks because of holidays was definitely something to look forward to. Even though the extra homework that came with that time off was not. All these reasons, apart from one, are reason enough to love holidays. Now, unfortunately, these special days feel different. Maybe it’s because the magic that was once there is gone. Or maybe, the repetitiveness of these events has caused the feelings I once had to evaporate over time. I believe the reason I feel this way is simply because I have gotten older. I still love holidays and always will, but ultimately, the excitement I once felt for them has decreased.

n March 2020, both public and private school systems were flipped upside down after the Coronavirus pandemic established itself. World health officials decided that it was too dangerous to allow in-person classes to continue. So, in an effort to protect students and faculty, all forms of education were forced to go online. Thus, the age of Zoom began, and the world of education was forced to adapt to this new way of learning. This was a difficult process to say the least, for multiple reasons. First, students who were so used to going to school every weekday for most of their lives, were suddenly blindsided by having to take their studies fully online. As one can imagine, a rapid change like this would be challenging for just about anybody. In addition to the students, instructors of all subjects and in all levels of learning, also had to adjust to this new lifestyle. All the magic of the classroom was gone, and so was the special in-person connections that students could have with their instructors. Well, maybe not all the magic. Although the in-person element was taken away, instructors still tried their best to connect with their students. While classrooms everywhere became empty, Zoom allowed classes to stay intact in a somewhat effective way. I say somewhat because of technical issues that prevented students and instructors from meeting (i.e., an unstable internet connection or a lack of internet altogether). Still, this new foundation allowed for education to continue. The thought of school being put on hold entirely would be unacceptable, even if some like that idea. That would have been a terrible thing for parents who were excited to see their children start their educational journeys. Especially for students in higher grade levels who were on the verge of graduating high school and college. However, thanks to Zoom, students everywhere were able to see those aspirations through, despite being in an online setting. This was not the case for everyone though. The transition from inperson learning to online wasn’t something that all students were prepared to handle. Unfortunately, some students (mostly college) decided to take a break from school. Perhaps now some have returned, but
others are probably waiting to go back until they can return to in-person meetings. According to data discovered in April 2021, colleges saw a 25% decrease in enrollment because of the pandemic. This is very understandable. For some, it might be more difficult to learn a certain subject online than it is in person. Speaking from experience, it was a little hard for me to learn online at first. Even more so because it had been a really long time since I was in school. It has definitely gotten easier over time, but I feel like I would be enjoying the college experience more if it was in person. The absence of extracurricular activities is a major example of why I feel this way. Due to classes being moved to online instruction, all the fun things that schools held on campus could no longer be enjoyed. Everything from field trips to sporting events and even food truck festivals accompanied by other fun activities were no more. Although learning, the most important aspect of school, remained intact online, children, teens, and adults missed out on experiences that would have made school a lot more enjoyable. Currently, most schools have returned to partial inperson learning thanks to the distribution of vaccines and lower COVID-19 cases. This is wonderful news because it means that society is one step closer to returning to normal! Be that as it may, society has yet to embrace a full transition back from online to in person. There are a lot of factors that may be preventing this from happening. For instance, the number of students and faculty members who are and are not willing to get vaccinated. Unfortunatly, more schools might not be ready to fully open up with 100% capacity until enough individuals can show proof of vaccination. Even though online instruction has helped, I strongly believe learning in person is something that can never be replaced. It is my firm belief that inperson learning is the best way for students to learn and have fun in school. If we can return to learning on campus, then students like myslef who have yet to experience a true college lifestyle will finally be able to do so. I sincerely hope that all schools will be able to open back up 100% so that they may welcome their students and faculty back to the school days that have been dearly missed.

n game 4 of the World Series, the Houston Astros beat the Atlanta Braves 9-5. Currently, the Atlanta Braves are leading the series 3-2. With the Atlanta Braves only one game away from taking the World Series Championship title, the Houston Astros strike back. The game started with Adam Duvall hitting a grand slam for the Atlanta Braves in the bottom of the first inning. Which is the first time that has been done since the year 1960. In the next inning, the Houston Astros come back and put two more runs on the board. In the top of the third inning, the Houston Astros tied the game 4-4. In the next inning, Freddie Freeman hits a 460 feet home run to take the lead for the Atlanta Braves. Freeman’s home run is the longest in the World Series history since tracking began in 2015. Then in the top of the fourth, the Houston Astros pinch-hit their pitcher, Zach Greinke, and he gets a single. Greinke is now the first pitcher in the World Series to get pinch-hit base hit since 1923. Next in the top of the fifth inning, the Houston Astros take the lead 7-5 for the first time
throughout the whole game. The Houston Astros then add a run to make the score 8-5 in the top of the eighth and become the first team to score fifty runs with two outs by an American League team in a single postseason. To end the game, the Houston Astros add another run to the scoreboard. Ending the game 9-5. There is a very likely chance that this series will go to game seven. Usually, teams that are up 3-2 who opened the series on the road have won the series 61.8 percent of the time. That's a very high percentage, but also consider that teams up 3-1 who opened up on the road have gone on to win the series more than 80 percent of the time. This was such an amazing game. So many records were broken and history was made at Truist Park last night. With the Atlanta Braves starting off very strong in the first inning and then the Houston Astros coming back after taking that hard hit at the beginning of the game. No matter who wins the World Series, both teams had an amazing season and defefeatly both earned their place. I also look forward to seeing this series continue on November 2nd in Houston at Minute Maid Park.

very year the football world is anxiously waiting to see who will be crowned as the best player in the world. The Ballon D’or is an extremely coveted individual trophy held by France Football every year. By many, the Ballon D’or is considered the pinnacle of professional footballers' accomplishments. The competition has been dominated by two players for the last ten years. Those two players are of course Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi and Ronaldo have won a combined nine out of the last ten Ballon D’ors. However, the competition has been much more open in the last few years. Luka Modric was the first to be awarded the Ballon D’or back in 2018. Modric was the first footballer to break the Ronaldo and Messi streak. As the competition has gotten a lot more open, there are many different arguments for players that could be named the best players in the world. Last year was a very controversial year. It seemed very likely that Roberet Lewandowski was going to be awarded the Ballon D’or. Not only with his individual performances, as he was the leading goal scorer all across Europe; his club Bayern Munich were also very impressive as they had their second treble winning season in their history. However, France Football decided to cancel the award that year due to the Coronavirus outbreak, as they believed that because of the fact that many
leagues were stopped due to the outbreak, it did not seem fair to present the award. This year however, the competition has been the most open to win in over ten years. Of course Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are up on the list for the prize, however there are many more footballers going head to head with them. Robert Lewandowski again is having a fantastic season, scoring goals for fun in the Bundesliga and Champions League. Mohamed Salah is also considered a massive favorite for the Ballon D’or. Salah is the leading goalscorer in the English Premier League
and is considered by many as the best player in the world on current form. Jorginho had an amazing summer, as he helped Chelsea to a Champions League triumph, as well as helping Italy win the European Championship. Jorginho was also named as Uefa’s men's player of the year. N'golo Kante and Karim Benzema are also amongst the favorites. The winner of this year’s Ballon D’or will have to have an outstanding season in order to stand above all these outstanding footballers. This will be the closest race to call in well over a decade.

some MVP-type numbers if you looked at previous MVPs in the league. Back when he won MVP in 2015 he averaged 30 points 5 rebounds and 6 assists. If you look at what he has averaged throughout four games, just imagine what he will have to end the season. So far through the season, many people will say that Curry is the MVP so far. Even with the Warriors looking good so far they aren’t even at their full potential. They are missing two very important players to their roster. They are missing their young up-andcoming center James Wiseman who is set to return this season. Still no set date in sight, but the Warriors staff are working with him to see when he will return. The next player is the biggest one yet, Klay Thompson. Thompson was probably one of their biggest assets back when they were winning championships. His shooting ability was incomparable to anyone else in the league. Once he comes back, the Warriors will look better than ever and have a real shot at a championship this year.

Poem of the Week Goodbye
By: Isabel Luna
As I take my final breath I know my time here has come to an end I’m no longer afraid to face death And instead, reminisce the memories with my family and friends Please don’t cry when I am gone And know I’m no longer in pain As I carry on I will miss you and you will miss me but I know we will meet again
3600 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, CA 90601
I take off my hat and look into the sky I know that it is my time to die Laugh more and don’t cry Because we don’t know when it will be our last time
Calaverita
