Twitter Accounts Hacked to Spread Pro-Erdoğan Message and Swastikas

Hundreds, possibly thousands, of Twitter users had their accounts hacked March 15 for a pro-Turkey operation, as reported by The Verge.

The hacked accounts, many

of which were either verified or high-profile users, have the same message written in a Turkish language with the hashtags #Nazialmanya and #Nazihollanda which translate to #NaziGermany and #NaziHolland, after the hashtags a text reads: “This

gives you a little #OttomanSlap,” and makes reference to April 16, when Turkey will hold a public vote on constitutional changes that would strengthen President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s power and could allow him to remain in office through 2029.

The tweets also included a link for pro-Erdoğan video and some accounts had their background images changed to a Turkish flag. As of now it is not known how many accounts were hacked, among the accounts hacked were Forbes and actress Sarah Shahi as according to engadget.

Some other accounts hacked were Duke University, Amnesty International, and Rio Hondo College. Rio Hondo has taken precautionary measures to avoid any subsequent hacks. The tweets have since been taken down.

The attack comes amid

what could be considered a high pressured time between Turkey and the Netherlands after Erdoğan high level diplomatic ties refused to allow Ankara’s Dutch ambassador to return to Turkey as reported by The Huffington Post.

At this time it is not known who lead the Twitter hacking, but it is thought by users that the attack is linked to Twitter Counter, a analytics application based in the Netherlands, that was involved in an attack during November 2016. The attack caused some high-profile accounts to tweet out spam according to The Verge.

Omer Ginor,Twitter Counter spokesperson, in an email to The Verge said that the company does not store account information, like passwords, or credit card information.

“We are aware of the situation and have started an

investigation into the matter,” Omer in the email said, “Before any definite findings, we’ve already taken measures to contain such abuse of our users’ accounts, assuming it is indeed done using our system — both blocking all ability to post tweets using our system and changing our Twitter app key.”

UNICEF USA, one of the accounts hacked, issued a statement March 15 in response to the hack, “We can confirm that our Twitter account was hacked. UNICEF USA is deeply concerned that our social media platforms would be used to promote hate speech. The offensive tweet has been removed. We are investigating the matter and working to ensure it does not happen again,” according to The Huffington Post.

FBI Director Admits to Investigation of Russian Interference, Colluding With Trump Administration ANGELO TORRES Reporter

FBI Director James Comey confirmed rumors of investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election during a testimony before the House of Intelligence Committee the morning of March 20.

Russian interference has been a major point of discussion since the conclusion of the 2016 presidential election. The Trump administration’s relationship with the Russian government and questions about Russian interference has created concern, both by Trump’s opponent and outspoken Republicans.

“I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigat-

ing the Russian government efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election,” Comey said in his statement Monday morning.

Comey also added that the investigation is an open and ongoing endeavor by the FBI, and until the investigation concludes, the information collected thus far is classified to the public.

The leaders of congress and of the HIC will be briefed in detail on the investigation in private, in a classified setting.

While the information is as of yet unknown to the public, the nature of the investigation includes an assessment of the actions taken

by Trump’s campaign to determine if any crimes were committed by the administration.

“[This investigation] includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the

Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts.”

President Trump took to his personal Twitter account before Comey’s testimony, alleging and asking for equal representation of his opponent’s colluding with the Russian government.

“What about all of the contact with the Clinton campaign and the Russians?

Also, is it true that the DNC would not let the FBI [investigate],” the president asked on the social media site.

While Trump used Twitter to rebut the claims he expected Comey’s to make in his testimony, during the testimony, Comey also denied any credibility to President Trump’s claims of wiretapping by the Obama administration, claims he made the morning of March 4 on Twitter.

LA County Sheriff With An Impeccable 50 year Record Now Convicted

Ex-sheriff Lee Baca was found guilty of violating inmates’ rights by allowing his deputies to beat them.

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca was found guilty March 15 on

obstructing a federal investigation into corruption within county jails and lying to cover up the interference as reported by the Los Angeles Times. The verdict, that jurors reached on their second day of deliberations, leaves

a tarnishing mark on Baca’s reputation in his 15 years as a sheriff that was seen as having progressive ideas on criminal justice issues.

The conviction was considered a victory for the prosecutors as they had to

retry Baca since their late last year attempt ended in a mistrial. The prosecutors had worked up to get to Baca, who is accused of being the leader behind blocking the FBI’s investigation, by first starting with 10 deputies below Baca and his former second in command who have all pleaded or been found guilty for their part in the crime. There were also some deputies who were found guilty of violating the civil rights of inmates and visitors of the jail. Baca, now 74 and suffering from early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, can possibly face time in federal prison for his actions.

Part of Baca’s job was to oversee the jails, where there were allegations of inmates being beaten by deputies, it was even reported sometimes inmates were beaten when they had handcuffs on without any reason for it.

The FBI started investigating the abuse claims, but their investigation was stopped in 2011 when it was discovered they had given a cellphone to informant in the jail by bribing a deputy. Prosecutors said this action angered Baca as

he saw it as an attack on his territory and that his anger would fuel his efforts to to subvert the FBI’s investigation.

Other actions that prosecutors argued as proof that Baca had obstructed the FBI’s investigation included that the inmate that had been the FBI’s informant was moved to another jail under a different name and had his real name, Anthony Brown, erased from the jail computer systems.

Prosecutors also accused Baca of having send deputies to an FBI agent’s house to attempt to intimidate her.

Federal officials considered the decision a success and that it showed that there was no one above the law.

Despite the decision Baca was reported as showing no emotion when he found out the verdict and in an article by the Los Angeles Times it was reported on the courthouse steps after the verdict he said, “my mentality is always optimistic. I look forward to winning on appeal.”

Wrongfully Convicted Man Set to be Released After 32 Years DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter

After spending 32 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit, Andrew Leander Wilson was released March 16 as reported by the Los Angeles Times. The order for Wilson to be released came March 15 from Supreme Court Judge Laura F. Priver who in the article from the Los Angeles Times said “I think this is justice,” before ordering that Wilson be released from custody as soon as possible.

“You ready for the words, Mr. Wilson?” Priver in a Los Angeles Times article asked.“You’re discharged,” she told him. “Thank you,” Wilson said. “Thank you.”

“I say it all the time, don’t stop fighting. Don’t give up. It seems like that’s what the justice system wants you to do and I never gave up,” Wilson said in an article from CNN adding, “by the grace of God I was put in contact with Loyola Law School.”

Wilson, now a 62-yearold man who always maintained his innocence, was

charged with robbery and murder in the 1984 stabbing death of Christopher Hanson, a 21-year-old man who had a disorder that kept his blood from clotting as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

“This case is like something you would see on TV,” said Laurie Levenson of Loyola Law School’s Project for the Innocent, who pushed for Wilson’s case to be looked at, in article from the Los Angeles Times. “It has everything from bad witness identification, not turning over impeachment evidence, having a theory and marching toward it, officers putting a full-court press on witnesses.”

Paula Mitchell, the lead attorney for Wilson’s case, brought up how the trial prosecutor, Laura Aalto, withheld certain pieces of evidence. There was evidence that the key witness Saladena Bishop, the victim’s girlfriend, for Wilson’s case was not credible. It was determined by law enforcement that Bishop was “a liar,” according to court documents as she filed a false police report accusing another man

of kidnapping and attempted rape, Mitchell said. However that evidence was never given to the defense.

There was also evidence suggesting that LAPD Det. Richard Marks had directed Bishop’s attention to Wilson’s photo while showing her a photo set and asking if she

recognize who attacked Hanson. Mitchell said there was also evidence that Hanson’s best friend had contacted Aalto saying he believed Bishop was responsible for the death and that in the past she had stabbed Hanson.

Aalto said she would not have withhold any, but admitted

she felt the case against Wilson at the time was weak.

Wilson walked out of Men’s Central Jail a free man with his family at his side and he now plans to go back to St. Louis where he can spend time with his mother, Maggie Davis, as reported by KTLA 5.

Flint Offical Found That Was Found Guilty Had to Write an Apology Letter as Punishment

epidemiology of the state’s Department of Health and Human Services Corrine Miller is receiving probation for a case in which Miller with-

held important information regarding the dangers that the water in the town of Flint had contained . A Michigan district court judge ordered that Miller publicly apologize for withholding information about the presence of Legionella bacteria which is a microbe that causes legionnaires’ disease. After pleading no contest to a charge of neglect, Miller also got 300 hours of community service with a years probation. She is also being made to cooperate in pursuance of several other former employees of the Health Department as well as the State’s Department of Environmental Quality for their role in the Flint’s water crisis.

Flint’s water emergency began when the water was not treated for corrosion which had ended up causing

lead from old underground lines to seep into the water supply. Elevated levels of lead and a neurotoxin were detected in children as well.

In 2014 and 2015 it was firmly established that twelve flint residents were to have died of Legionnaires’ disease which is an extreme type of pneumonia. Statistics not only showed proof that the city’s water did in fact contain this bacteria but public health experts confirmed as well that it had in fact caused the deaths of the twelve residents.

Others like Governor Rick Snyder does not believe that he has any reason to be concerned about being charged with anything having to do with the Flint water investigation. As Snyder commented to the Detroit Free Press occurred so did the bill for his legal fees which had reached

to 4.9 million all paid by taxpayers. The Governor said much of the money had been spent on producing documents requested by attorney general Bill Schuettes investigators. Snyder has said investigators “Keep on asking” and his lawyers “ Keep on responding

Millers attorney and special prosecutor Todd Flood has argued and said Miller’s cooperation in the Flint water investigation has been “Substantial” and that she was the state director of disease control. Miller was also told to make a public apology, judge Jennifer J. Manley said the demand was “perfectly appropriate in this case”.

Considering that even more people were sickened than previously believed, it’s the least she can do.

Rex Tillerson Uses Fake Email Around Climate Change XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Tuesday Mar. 14 that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson used an email alias while CEO of Exxon to discuss climate change.

The alias, Wayne Tracker, was used from 2008 to 2015.

Schneiderman made the claim and has accused Exxon for not turning over all relevant documents required by a court order.

Exxon has been in a protracted legal dispute in which the company is fighting off

investigations looking for evidence that Exxon misled investors about the impact of climate change.

Mr. Tillerson, who was Exxon’s CEO at the time, claims through a spokesman that the secret alias was used for “secure and expedited communications between select senior company officials and the former chairman for a broad range of business-related topics.” However, Schneiderman argues that this email account was never disclosed.

“Despite the company’s incidental production of approximately 60 documents

bearing the ‘Wayne Tracker’ email address, neither Exxon nor its counsel have ever disclosed that this separate email account was a vehicle for Mr. Tillerson’s relevant communications at Exxon, and no documents appear to have been collected from this email account,” Schneiderman said.

Despite this, the company contends that the email account was not just used to discuss climate change, but also a broad range of business matters.

The account was “mostly used while he [Tillerson] was traveling to ensure he’d see

an item in a secure and timely way without having to sort through his regular email inbox, which could contain many items. To suggest it was exclusively or even primarily about climate issues is absolutely false and misleading,” said company spokesman Alan Jeffers.

The State Department has referred inquiries into this issue to Exxon. There is no indication that the Secretary of State uses a private email account for official government business.

Mr. Tillerson “uses only his Department of State email address to conduct official

business and he does comply with all federal record-keeping requirements,” said State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner.

“I can assure you, very disciplined about that,” Toner said of Tillerson’s use of his official email address.

“Similarly, he only uses an official phone number for conversations he may have with respect to his business.

I am simply unaware that he might have - or whether he has - a personal email address in addition. But in the conduct of official business, he only uses a Department of State email address.”

Trump’s Travel Ban 2.0 Blocked XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter

President Trump issued an executive order Mar. 6 revising the original travel ban he had approved in January, shortly after he took office.

The original order sparked massive protests at airports across the country. It was eventually blocked by federal courts.

The new ban is narrower in scope. The order bars entry from six countries - Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen - for 90 days.

Some refugees are banned from entry for 120 days. The original order banned entry from seven countries; Iraq was originally on the list.

At first, Syrian refugees were permanently barred from entry. Though the new order does not signal out refugees from Syria, the

administration has lowered the cap of refugees admitted from 110,000 under President Barack Obama to 50,000.

Iraq was lifted from the ban after lobbying from the Pentagon. The Department of Defense warned that barring Iraqis from entry could undermine efforts to quell ISIS in country.

The administration also softened its stance regarding legal residents. Whereas under the original ban greencard holders were denied entry into the United States, under the new ban, those with valid visas can enter the country. Also, refugees whose entry into the United States had already been approved are no longer barred.

The administration hoped the order would survive challenges in court, however; a federal judge in Hawaii has issued a temporary restraining order against parts of the

new ban.

U.S. District Judge Derrick K. Watson argued that the president’s comments and those of his advisers are evidence that the ban is discriminatory against Muslims.

“A reasonable, objective observer — enlightened by the specific historical context, contemporaneous public statements, and specific sequence of events leading to its issuance — would conclude that the Executive Order was issued with a purpose to disfavor a particular religion,” Watson wrote in a 43-page opinion.

A federal judge in Maryland also issued a halt on the executive order, though narrower in scope. U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang pointed to comments made

by Trump and his advisers as justification for the injunction.

“These statements, which

include explicit, direct statements of President Trump’s animus toward Muslims and intention to impose a ban on Muslims entering the United States, present a convincing case that the First Executive Order was issued to accomplish, as nearly as possible, President Trump’s promised Muslim ban,” Chuang wrote.

Judge Chuang’s ruling only suspends the portion of the order that stops the issuance of visas to citizens of the six Muslim-majority countries targeted in the ban.

The president expressed his frustration towards the injunctions at a rally Mar. 15 in Nashville. He called the ruling “terrible” and indicated that it was done for political reasons. Both judges were appointed by his predecessor, Barack Obama.

“Let me tell you something, I think we ought to go back to the first one and go all

the way,” Trump said. “The danger is clear, the law is clear, the need for my executive order is clear.”

The administration requested a motion asking Judge Watson to limit his ruling. However, Sunday, Mar. 19, the judge rejected the motion.

The ruling clears the way for the president to appeal to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The 9th Circuit previously blocked the original travel ban, forcing the administration to revise the order and unveil the current ban.

The administration is already appealing the ruling made by Judge Chuang of Maryland. That appeal will go before the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Coast to Coast, the Death Penalty is Still A Controversial Issue XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter

Florida Governor Rick Scott removed State Attorney Aramis Ayala from the case of an accused cop killer after she announced she would not seek the death penalty in this case or any other case thereafter. Scott has assigned Lake County State Attorney Brad King to the case.

“Earlier today, I called on State Attorney Ayala to immediately recuse herself from this case,” said Scott in

a statement. “She informed me this afternoon that she refuses to do that. She has made it clear that she will not fight for justice, and that is why I am using my executive authority to immediately reassign the case.”

Under Florida law, the governor can appoint a different prosecutor if he or she finds a “good or sufficient reason” to remove the original prosecutor.

Ayala gave her justification for not seeking the death penalty. “I have determined that doing so is not in the

best interest of the community or the best interest of justice,” she said.

Across the nation, the death penalty is a controversial issue.

During the November election, California voted yes on Proposition 66 which speeds up executions. Californians also voted against abolishing the death penalty.

Prop 66 accelerates the death penalty process by allowing trial courts to hear petitions to death penalty convictions. It also limits the number of successive appeals

and opens the pool of lawyers that can take on death penalty cases. It also places a five-year deadline for appeals to be heard. Currently, it can take up to 25 years for an inmate on death row to exhaust all appeals.

Though the ballot measure was successful, a month after the November election, the California Supreme Court put a hold on the implementation of the measure as it considers a lawsuit challenging it.

“The challenge is based

on four legal arguments, including that it violates the jurisdiction of courts by having Superior Court judges handle secondary appeals over issues such as newly discovered evidence, incompetent counsel or misconduct by jurors or prosecutors,” said attorney Christina Von der Ahe Rayburn, who filed the case.

Currently, there are 750 inmates in California that are on death row. There has not been an execution in the state in over a decade.

Germany rejects Trump’s claim that it owes NATO and U.S. ‘vast sums’ for defense DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter

German Defense Minister, Ursula Von der Leyen, denied President Donald Trump’s claim that Germany owes “vast sums of money” to NATO and the U.S. for defense. The claim came after a meeting between the US and Germany that was considered

to be tense, according to NBC news.

Trump had tweeted March 18 that the meeting with Von der Leyen had gone over well, but then added “nevertheless, Germany owes vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!”

In a statement Von der

Leyen said “there is no debt account at NATO,” then added it was wrong to link the alliance’s target for members to spend two percent of their economic output on defense by 2024 to NATO only, reported Reuters. “Defense spending also goes into UN peacekeeping missions, into our European missions and into our contribution to the fight against IS terrorism,”

said Von der Leyen.

Von der Leyen also added that for the burden to be shared equally that it was necessary to have a “modern security concept” that would not only include modern NATO, but also European defense union and investment in the United Nations.

Ivo Daalder, a former permanent representative to NATO between 2009 to 2013,

responded to Trump’s tweets saying, “Sorry, Mr President, that’s not how Nato works.”

Daalder also added it was up to the U.S. to decide how much they want to spend on defending NATO, then went on to say, “This is not a financial transaction, where NATO countries pay the U.S. to defend them. It is part of our treaty commitment,” as reported by the Guardian.

Russia Preps First Manned Lunar Moon Landing LU IS GU T I E R R EZ Reporter

So Russia is finally getting into the space game once again after being quiet for some time. Russia’s space agency Roscomos is taking its first steps in achieving its first manned lunar landing.

They’ve started to recruit people to be potential cosmonauts. They’re looking for about six to eight people who have worked in engineering or aviation or have any experience with the space industry. Roscomos is going to be putting all trainees through rigorous preparation such as psychological, physical, and medical.

All of these test will go on until only four remain.

Those who remain will be part of landing the first lunar on the moon. Russia has even named the spacecraft Federatsiya, which will be launched in 2031.

“There will be no discrimination based on skin color or gender” said Sergei Krikalyov the executive

director. Applications will be open for the next four months as well, so if you want to go to space sign up now. Now, to pilot such an advanced ship they’re only looking for the best. To fly it you must be at least 35 with a minimum height of 4’11 and a max of 6’2, also can’t weigh over 199 pounds. The pilot must have some knowledge in IT skills and have an engineering degree or pilot training in aviation or space industry.

With such a high demand in fitness all the men must be able to perform a cross country ski of 5km.

They’re going to undergo intense training, including gynecological exams for the women. To insure everyone is in top physical shape.

Russia currently has about 30 cosmonauts, but about 14 have not been to space. With the eldest being 58 years old Gennady Padalka.

Who holds the world record for total time spent in space.

Oculus Rift has made headlines once again with it’s newest project. Mission ISS is the latest project that allows everyday people such as you and I to explore the international space station! It is currently free for all Oculus rift and Touch owners. It’s a detailed recreation of the space station where players can do all sorts of things normal astronauts would do such as spacewalks, dock cargo capsules, even “perform mission-critical task”. It was even designed by NASA themselves and many other space agencies. They’ve put in all this effort to really give you the full astronaut experience.

When Mission ISS was announced last year, one of the head developers of Oculus has said it’s almost the same simulation that NASA uses. With almost life like simulation it’s going to give the player a full immersion and taste of being in space.

But it’s important to add that this isn’t the first time NASA has worked with virtual reality. They’ve played such a key role in making this all possible in the 1980’s through the 1990’s helping people capture breathtaking pictures.

They’ve even helped make Mars 2030, which is very similar to Mission ISS, that allows you to travel to mars freely. All of this was made in hopes to educate people on space in a fun way.

Oculus is hoping to make space travel look more accessible for everybody. The release of this isn’t too far off from them sending a headset to space. With partnership with French agency they want to send an astronaut to space.

In hopes of “testing out a zero-gravity on humans spatial awareness and balance”.

As well as not make it very nauseating.

As of right now lots of people have plenty of questions. Oculus has seemed to be pretty secretive for the most part.

Clean Meat Something We Can All Eat CRYSTIAN MENDOZA Sports Editor

A Bay Area startup by the name of Memphis Meats has just become the first company to produce clean poultry, “a milestone for the clean meat industry,” although the meat currently cost about $9,000 per pound to produce. The company hopes to reduce costs drastically over the next few years because your average pound of chicken breast only cost a little over $3 to produce and they aim to reach consumers with affordable prices in the years to come.

In order to create this clean meat, a procedure in which living animal cells

are placed into bioreactor tanks while being fed oxygen, sugars, and minerals until they divide and grow into clean cultured poultry meat is required. According to the Wall Street Journal, “the taste and texture is similar to that of the real thing, just a bit spongier.” Ultimately, Memphis Meats’ goal is to find a way to produce meat cells without an actual animal being used.

A handful of journalists, tasters, and Memphis Meats’ closest supporters alongside Good Food Institute’s Senior Scientist, Christie Lagally, the Memphis Meats team as well as CEO Dr. Uma Valeti’s family were all able to taste the future of clean food.

GFI advisor Chef Derek Sarno cooked the world’s first clean poultry (without having raised or slaughtered a bird) for those in attendance in two ways, a fried chicken dish over collard greens and mashed potatoes and a classic duck a l’orange which journalist Emily Byrd states were both “remarkably flavorful.”

The currently outdated system of farming and producing meat has had a devastating affect on the health of many including the animals themselves as they are exposed to harsh living conditions while also being fed genetically modified wheat or corn feed as well as hormones in order to make the animal produce

more meat generating more profits for meat corporations.

In turn, when consumed by humans, the genetically modified meat can ultimately lead to cancer and a variety of other health risks. “This is a significant technological leap for humanity and an incredible business opportunity- to transform a giant global industry while contributing to solving some of the most urgent sustainability issues of our time,” said Dr. Valeti.

Chicken is currently one of the most consumed meats in America and in the near future it won’t be hard to find slaughter-free, clean chicken in your average grocery

store. “Chicken and duck are at the center of the table in so many cultures around the world, but the way conventional poultry is raised creates huge problems for the environment, animal welfare, and human health,” Dr. Valeti told journalist Byrd.

Dr. Valeti alongside Memphis Meats will “Aim to produce meat in a better way, so that it is delicious, affordable and sustainable.”

With the future of clean meat looking bright, Memphis Meats plans to launch a commercial product by 2021 although a spokesperson from the company stated to Digital Trends that the so called clean meat has not been tested yet.

Energy is heading seaside as companies search for more efficient ways to produce power. This renewable energy resource comes from wind at sea. Developers have been building wind turbines out at sea and the technology has become increasingly cheaper over the years, coming down 22 percent in the last year and 46 percent in the last five years, according to an article from bloomberg.com.

This is a resource currently being utilized in Europe, but the renewable energy industry has set sights for the United States who have been against this technology due to costs. The article also says

“... the U.S. government’s official goal for now is to install 86 gigawatts of turbines at sea by 2050.”

Power within the United States is cheaper in cost compared to Europe and this will push it to the next level.

European winds blow an average 22 miles per hour, almost triple the speed on land.

This potential energy makes it worthy of the billion dollar project it’s slated to be.

They don’t come without danger, however, as wind turbines in the North Sea are battered by storms and sea currents that corrode these machines. Immediate attention is not an option as companies are at the mercy of nature.

This does not deter them

because they have invested $29.9 billion into this industry and expect it to grow to $115 billion by 2020. An expected drop in costs pushes the market down, making these projects more efficient.

Winds at sea tend to last for 45 percent of the year, but the commitment to batteries has solved this problem. The article states that “battery costs have fallen 40 percent since 2014.”

Auctions are being made across the world looking for areas suitable for the demanding resource. Competition has helped push this resource to the forefront of renewable energy and looks to dominate coal and nuclear power.

Lithium-ion batteries are some of the most common rechargeable batteries on the market. Their importance is shown in their use in medical equipment, house electronics, and other electric tools.

They’re known to be dangerous because of their flammable electrolytes but the energy they provide is still needed.

Three times more energy is what John Goodenough (one of the inventors of the lithium-ion battery) promises as he has found a new formula that will create this advancement in solid-state batteries.

Some of the most exciting new ways for the battery to operate includes its ability to charge quickly, the fact that it may never explode, and will perform well at low tempera-

tures when compared to its more recent models.

The battery is still in the early stages of being created and tested because researchers still remain cautious of any new types of batteries.

Goodenough as the person who came up with revolutionary idea has a background that shows that his idea is not only possible but his critical thinking and scientific thought will make

it possible. His first original creation was the cobalt-oxide cathode in 1980; it formed the core of the lithium-ion batteries.

This has clearly run its course and as it reaches its full potential, scientists are only pushed further to create a new version because of instances such as the Samsung phone explosions. These explosions happened due to short circuits from metal

strands within the phones but the newer version uses glass instead of liquid as an electrolyte. Basically, this upgrade will save many lives.

Keep in mind that the first l-ion created took an extensive amount of time for production. This advancement will help with numerous issues, and it will still take time but the wait is worth it.

If you’ve met Freddy Vazquez you know how unforgetable he is. Between the charisma and the easy going demeanor, it’s impossible to forget him. A natural born performer since the tender age of six, Vazquez began his career with dancing.

But when you have the kind energy that flows off of Vazquez so naturally it’s impossible to contain it.

And he didn’t. High school took Vazquez to a whole new direction when he began rapping.

Now Vazquez performs at least once a month, with his next show happening at the Redondo Beach venue, The Boogie this upcoming April 1st. But not to worry, you won’t have to drive that far

to get a glimpse at the very talented Vazquez as he is one of the talented performers showcasing their work at RioPalooza.

“It’s going to be a good time, I’m going to try and put as many songs as I can in the 15 minute set I have. I might cut some in half to get more in, but it’ll definitely be a good time,” said Vazquez.

Performing has become addicting, as Vazquez mentioned. “I love it, you know?

The nervous energy before performing. It gets me hyped up and scares me all at once.

It’s the best and worst thing about performing.”

RioPalooza is the school’s first annual music festival, it’s set to occur April 6 in the midquad. And in true music festival spirit, RioPalooza will have music, food, activity booths and much more.

Miguel Juarez will be one of the young and talented performers at RioPalooza this upcoming April 6. The 18 year-old from El Monte will be singing with a possible chance of also playing the guitar.

This is only his second time performing in front of a public audience.

“The last time I performed was in high school for a beauty pageant type of competition,” stated Juarez, “ It was the first time I ever sang in front of a larger audience and I sang a Frank Sinatra song”.

With just one performance under his belt, Juarez has taken the preparation for his performance very seriously.

“My preparation has gone well, for a while I was perplexed as to which songs I would choose but I got it together and picked out the ones that’d showcase my voice and please the audience,” claimed Juarez.

It wasn’t until high school that Juarez received recognition for his singing voice.

“I noticed I could sing the day I performed for rehearsals at the high school competition I first performed in.

Everyone came up to me and told me how well I could sing and I was surprised,” stated Juarez.

Juarez will be singing for the campuses Open Mic night March 22 and will join the other talented performers at Rio Palooza April 7 in the midquad.

Faculty’s Diverse Talent Revealed at Rio Hondo’s Art Gallery NOA H GA RCI A Opinion editor noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu

Rio Hondo College hosted its bi-annual Faculty Art Show Mar. 14th.

“This show’s really special to me… you get to know your teacher on a different level and you get to see what they can really do,” explained Gallery Director Robert Miller, referring to the Gallery.

His statement encapsulated the intimate and sophisticated feelings one gets from this particular show.

Each piece is very personal and gives students, albeit anyone, an indepth and personal view at who the person is, rather than just what they teach.

What’s really great about each of the pieces is that, as art, they can be interpreted in anyway and are both simple and complex. Several different types of mediums were on display; ranging from ceramics, metal sculpture, mixed media, oil on canvas, and wood print. While a particular faculty member may have an intended message behind their work, it’s ultimately up to the viewer to

decide what it really means.

Although they were all memorable in their own right, the most specific piece was from Professor of Arts History Sheila Lynch, who was unexpectedly given gifts and praise for her upcoming birthday upon arriving at the reception.

Her piece in the show directly rivals my previous statement; her artwork carried a specific message. Her art featured a large image of Marie Curie, a room sized tea pot, and a tea bag with a chemical symbol on it.

“This is a proposal for a gallery room… a homage and reminder of russian spy tactics using certain types of radiation in assassination (Polonium 210).” Her piece gives us a subtle hint of a political theme, playing off of the saying ‘talk about the elephant in the room,’ by displaying a homage to said russian tactics.

The pieces themselves were all submitted by current Rio Hondo faculty, and were made from 1997 to 2017. The gallery will be open from Mar. 13 to April 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.

‘No Más Bebés:’ a cold look at inequality and discrimination

The History Department, in association with the Student Equity Office hosted a screening of the film “No Más Bebés,” followed by a panel discussion with a producer and two women featured in the documentary at the Wray Theater Mar. 15.

“No Más Bebés” is a 2015 documentary film directed by Renee Tajima-Peña, following the lives of the women who testified in the court case Madrigal v. Quilligan, accusing the Los Angeles County- USC Medical Center of sterilizing immigrant women without their consent

or through coercion, between the late 60’s and early 70’s.

The film, while featuring an array of fun and resilient women, is also very blunt, even downright dark in it’s portrayal of the situation that caused Madrigal v. Quilligan, as well as the implications it has on how women’s reproductive rights and how the beliefs and values of lower-class people are mistreated by the American Judicial System.

“No Más Bebés” is an impactful story, revealing the cultural importance of fertility, the abuse women can endure in the face of cultural male dominance, and the horrors immigrants, the poor, or those who cannot speak or

read English can face without proper representation.

The film featured stories of women who did not speak English, who were in the process of, or had just gone out of labor, and who were outright told they would die had they not signed the documents permitting the hospital to perform sterilization.

“Some women don’t even remember signing documents,” No Más Bebés producer Virginia Espino revealed.

The Q and A session following the screening included some politically and emotionally charged questions and claims. Espino gave better context to the situation, and gave her own explanation for

why the mistreatment took place.

While the medical center was originally used for women seeking emergency medical treatment, the University of Southern California made the focus instead on educating its students.

“[There was] money being funneled into hospitals performing these surgeries… it was free medical experience [for students,]” a point Espino says is especially concerning, because vulnerable women seeking medical treatment were treated as educational opportunities first, and as patients second.

involved in the case.

However, participants in the trial and the women featured in “No Más Bebés” do not consider losing the court case a loss.

The trial resulted in a mandatory 72-hour consideration period for patients 21 and younger, the availability of related forms in multiple languages, and other legal ramifications.

“Women should be allowed to make their own decisions on their own terms.

These women weren’t allowed to make that choice,” Espino says. This is a choice the women of “No Más Bebés” continue to fight for through these screenings.

The vibrations, notes, lights, and guitar flourishes: all converging as an exaltation of the senses. This musical wave, a euphoria that slapped me and wrapped around my very being came from the Indie rock band Japandroids.

The opening act, Craig Finn and The Uptown Controllers, were slightly underwhelming. Both bands style of music may be in the same spectrum of Indie Rock, but the Controllers were less energetic and more relaxed.

Their 30 minute set was well received by the crowd, but was easily forgotten once the main performance was setting up.

The duo started their set with the song “Near to the Wild Heart of Life” from their latest 2017 album of the same name. Every song they played conveyed one of two different messages; a declaration of war against everything that’s inconvenience and wronged you, or the celebration of everything great that has happened.

What’s really fantastic about their three main studio albums is the fact that they each build upon one another.

Although they don’t necessarily differ in sound and style, they aren’t a simple repetition of the first album.

Each one creatively builds on the previous one and expands it as so that it seems like all three are one long, progressing album.

The venue was The

Observatory in Santa Ana.

The place was reasonably clean, appropriately lit, and had fantastic bars. Although seating could’ve been better, any of the chairs that littered the sides of the walls could’ve probably gotten in someone’s way. The acoustics of the hall was amazing. Every sound and vibration could be heard and felt from every inch of the building, even if minutely.

Brian King (guitar, vocals) and David Prowse (drums), first formed in 2006 from Vancouver, British Columbia. The duo describe their music as one part classic rock, one part punk. From October 2016 to June 10th 2017 the duo will be spending time in North America and Europe, ending their touring session in the UK as a part of the End Of The Road festival in September.

The Venus Collective Hosts Spacegirl Gemmy, RIIOTTT, and More

The term “DIY” (do it yourself) can often be vague, especially when it comes to something like coordinating a music or art collective.

The “yourself” part in the acronym will often refer to a group of people organizing to produce something, rather than someone actually doing it themselves.

The concept, by all means, is perfectly fine. Appreciation of the arts is a crucial thing, and there is no fundamentally wrong way to produce art, but the term “DIY” get’s thrown

around too often where it shouldn’t be.

The Venus Collective, an all-girl art collective ran by Samantha Herrera, hosted a show Mar.12, featuring performances from Spacegirl Gemmy, 2ToneDisco, and RIIOTTT. At this particular show, the term “DIY” found a proper home.

“I pretty much just organized the event myself (set times, ticket prices, etc).” Herrera said in a direct message. “Gemmy and I have followed each other on twitter for a while and I saw she was going to be visiting the US, so I contacted her asking if she would like to perform in LA;

she agreed.”

As for the rest of the performers, “I reached out to people who she was friends with… and that’s how I got 2ToneDisco and RIIOTTT. I booked the Jewels room in Union through Adam from HAM because he referred me to the booking team at the venue,” Herrera explained.

But why do all of this?

Something that requires so much time and effort usually takes a few people, if not a team, to pull off; doing it solo is highly stressful (keep in mind, I’m only referring to the collective’s organization; jobs like security, working the door, or vending would be

impossible for one person to do). Herrera’s explanation is simple, but empowering, “the reason I made the collective [was] for the girl support… as a girl there is still some resistance,” said Herrera, “my focus is more to support the females because I feel like guys already have enough support.”

The female support is apparent, two out of three artists performing at this show were female, and both of their performances were beautifully unique.

RIIOTTT, originally an artist from New York who moved to Los Angeles to start her otherworldly music career, opened up for the show.

RIIOTTT is no stranger to the stage, and managed to enliven an audience that was a bit crowd shy at first. Her musical performance fabricated a pop-music, intergalactically-charged vibe from another galaxy.

2ToneDisco played a nonstop eccentrically enhanced set. Their performance was a bit long, but they still managed to miss any mellow moments. Heavy bass made the venue feel like a nightclub; this combined with remixes including artist like Kanye West and Migos helped keep their set refreshingly energized.

Spacegirl Gemmy, visiting LA from Australia, was the headliner of the event. A crowd favorite even before playing a single song, Gemmy’s performance mixed hip-hop and rap with an 8-bit sound that feels like it was pulled straight out of an old video-game. “All

my friends inspired me. Oh, and video games and anime.”

Gemmy said. Gemmy’s unique sound is almost guaranteed to bring in a huge following in the near future.

Herrera recently announced on Instagram that this would be her last show for a while, saying, “I’ll miss planning events and hopefully soon I’ll feel like planning one again… until then, I’ll be helping The Venus Co and also supporting my fellow DIY friends.”

Herrera’s work with The Venus Collective has encouraged female empowerment throughout LA’s art scene, and her contributions will continue to develop as the collective builds it’s reputation. My parents and I get along really great. In fact since I became older we share drinks and I’ve even smoked once or twice with my dad. But after talking to my girl she told me that thats really wrong and inappropriate.

I was just wondering, is there a difference between a friend and a parent and can you be both ? Is there any difference or what ?

ANSWER:

I can only really speak from an incredibly biased worldview of on a regular basis I partake in drinking and smoking with

my parent. For me drugs, substances were as regular as riding a bike or routine as waking in the morning to brush your teeth.

I think the line of being a parent and friend is very fine line that is very treacherous and dangerous to walk.

The obvious complicated balancing act of wanting to considered an authority figure that is respected along with having enough trust that the child is comfortable enough to come to the parent with anything is probably a feat all in itself. If your child was to ever to something really dumb and needs

your help why wouldn’t you want them to trust you completely?

Even as tumultuous as this kind of parental bond is, this in my opinion is the best parental bonds with their respective children because of my mother’s truthfulness and honesty.

Honesty is the best tool to disway doing something really stupid during the infamous “young and dumb” phase.

It was my mother’s tales of she told me about of how crazy or asine of a situation you can find yourself when taking these substances is what kept me from fully exploring that

crazy world of partying. It was her being virtuous at every turn telling how fun they can be only to have it crash like a satellite coming from space in the after effects.

Walking that fine line between a friend and a parent although twisted and dysfunctional in the case for me, is better. It leads to a better relationship between your parent and with the ability to talk to him/her with anything.

Besides, who doesn’t have the idea or want to see what their parent is like when they let their hair down and let loose

In the Jungle Mar. 16, the Rio Hondo College baseball team lost to El Camino Compton College by a score of 9-6. The game was filled with plenty of action, hits, and pitching. Compton had a total of 9 runs on 21 hits while Rio had 6 runs on 10 hits. The Roadrunners used a total of 7 pitchers. The conference loss to Compton drops Rio Hondo’s overall record to 11-8 and their conference record to 3-4.

The starting pitcher for Rio Hondo, Jake Gaudet, lasted only one inning allowing 3 runs on 4 hits. The damage was done when Guadet gave up a 3-run homerun to Compton’s slugger Allen Pacheco. Rio responded in the bottom of the first inning when R.J. Romo hit a double to score the speedy Nick Ybarra.

Another dagger struck Rio’s baseball squad in the

top of the third inning when new pitcher Chris Velasquez gave up a solo home run to Javier Garcia. Once again Rio responded from a 4-1 deficit with some small ball action involving bunts and fielders choices.

Marcos Rivas grounded out the short stop earning runs batted in to score Danny Marquez. Next, batter Cesar Sandoval, singled to score Randy Buenrostro. The score was 4-3 when Christian Valdez stepped up to the plate and hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop and beat out the throw at first base. The error by the shortstop allowed runner Alex Rodriguez to score and tied up the game at 4-4.

Rio took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Randy Buenrostro singled into left field to score baserunner R.J. Romo.

Rio Hondo had its first lead of the game by the score of 5-4. Compton immediately responded in the top half of the fifth inning when Miguel

Valdez singled in base runner Javier Garcia. In the bottom half of the inning the Roadrunners kept hope alive when Marcos Rivas scored off of a base hit by Chris Velasquez.

The game was all tied up in the 6th inning until Compton came roaring back with some key hits. In the top half of the inning Javier Garcia singled to score Ivan Navarro. Next hitter Allen Pacheco singled in Jorge Rivas.

From then on out the Roadrunners were shut out of the scoring bracket by solid pitching by Compton. Nicholas Guerra got the win for Compton pitching two innings only allowing one run.

Rio Hondo pitcher Andrew Quillen got the loss for Rio although the team used many pitchers.

With this loss Rio Hondo needs to bounce back in their next conference game Mar. 19 against Compton. The next home game for the Roadrunners is Mar. 23 against East Los Angeles.

The Rio Hondo Softball team continued the second half of their season but still could not get it together, giving up the most runs they have so far this season to the El Camino Warriors in a 19-5 loss.

Having started off the season with three wins and two losses, the Lady Roadrunners have now lost their last 11 of 15 games and tried their best to correct their mistakes going into the game against El Camino Mar. 16.

Rio hoped to change things immediately and did so in the bottom of the first, when Serina Castrellon doubled to left field and brought in Brenae Martinez for the first run of the game.

The game would be close for the next three innings but four errors from the infield allowed El Camino to get

seven runs off six hits, with El Camino’s Ashley Machado adding an exclamation mark to the game with her home run that gave them a 6 run advantage heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Not much was going right for the Lady Roadrunners in the next three innings and things managed to get much worse in the sixth inning when Rio allowed 12 runs on six hits and seven errors.

El Camino showed why they were winners of nine straight coming into the game.

Rio still had something left in them in the sixth inning with the first coming off a fielder’s choice from El Camino, throwing to third and tagging out Martinez at third while letting Alicia Olivas score.

Two separate errors from El Camino let Tiana Rodriguez and Castrellon score unearned runs and Paige Aguilar added one more run after

The damage was too much however, with the game ending after a full six innings with the final score being 195.

The pitching has seen better days with starting pitcher Martinez throwing five innings, allowing 11 runs in nine hits, six errors and only one strikeout for the day. It did not get much better for relief pitcher Desiree Rhodes, pitching one inning but allowing eight runs on five hits and three errors.

Martinez had a better day offensively, going 2-for-3 and scoring a run on the day. Castrellon, Gomez and Marissa Macias all went 1-for-3 and had an RBI each on the day.

The Lady Roadrunners will have an early double header on Mar 18, going up against Antelope Valley College at 10 a.m and face Mount San Jacinto College later on that day at 12 p.m.
