io Hondo College alumnus and El Monte Police Chief Ben Lowry passed away on Monday, Oct. 24, 2022. According to the description of the Chief Ben Lowry Memorial Fund on porac.org, Lowry passed away from cancer. The fundraiser–with a goal of $50,000–was created to help his family and assist with funeral costs. Lowry had been interim Police Chief since December 2021. Then, in June, he formally became the El Monte Police Chief, having been with the Department for two decades.

In addition, “Prior to his illness, he [Lowry] sent five El Monte Police Department recruits to our Police Academy who recently graduated on October 5, 2022 [sic] as part of Class No. 213,” according to a message sent by the Rio Hondo Superintendent/President’s Office on behalf of the Rio Hondo Community College District, Board of Trustees, and the Police Academy. The Rio Hondo Police Academy is part of the Division of Public Safety department. Under its umbrella, the department includes programs like the Fire Academy, EMT training, and Homeland Security. forgotten. Throughout his tenure, he showed his love for the City of El Monte, leading with compassion and unity,” said the acting Police Chief, Jake Fisher, in a press statement. Lowry is the third person in the El Monte Police Department to pass away this year. In June, Sgt. Michael

Shooting Leaves Two Dead at St. Louis High School By: Beatriz Martinez Editor-in-Chief

O

n Oct. 24, a 19-yearold man carried out a shooting at St. Louis High School that left two dead and seven injured, according to the local police. Orlando Harris was the suspect of this fatal act at the Central Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) High School and he was a former high school student who had graduated in 2021. At a press conference Monday night, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Commissioner Michael Sack shared details about what happened. According to Sack, around 9:11 am the police got a call about an active shooter at the High School. Four minutes after the call, the police were already on the scene. Minutes later, they located the shooter, and they had a gunfight with him. During the gunfight, the shooter was injured by the police, and was later transferred to a nearby hospital where he died. The two fatalities were identified by the police. The first was a 16-year-old student named Alexandria Bell, she remained on the scene where she was pronounced dead. The second victim was Jean Kuczka, who was a 61-year-old high school physical education teacher. Kuczka was transported to and died at a local hospital. According to the school’s website, Kuzka had been part of the school community since 2008, she lived with her husband and one of her five children. During the conference, police also shared details about Harris. They said that Harris

had no previous criminal history, and lived with his family. Also, the police mentioned that mental health problems could be what motivated him to carry out this act in his old high school. Updates Throughout the investigation, new details about this case have been revealed. Harris used a 223 caliber AR-15style rifle and carried a large amount of ammunition. When Harris first tried to buy a gun, the background check blocked the sale. However, he was able to obtain the firearm through a private individual who had purchased the firearm from a licensed dealer. In a new press conference held Thursday, Police Commissioner Sack stated that in the suspect’s car, the police had found a document in a notebook where he mentioned his desire to carry out this incident. The notebook also mentioned how he perceived his social life; he had no friends and had never had a girlfriend, “this was the perfect storm for a mass shooter,” Harris wrote. The police shared the concern, and the importance of being aware of the children of the house. Knowing what is going on in their lives and helping them can prevent these types of incidents. Sack mentioned that, “The threat here is over, however, we’re going to continue to be vigilant in our schools.” The attack on the Central Visual and Performing Arts High School adds to the long list of school shootings that have occurred across the country.

Kanye West Dethroned By: Gabriel Angulo Sports Editor

I

t has been a crazy couple of weeks for Kanye West after losing major deals and sponsorships. The Chicago- born artist made a series of anti-semetic statements that cost him multiple sponsorships and deals that have severely impacted his career and will no doubt continue to do so. Perhaps one of the biggest hits to Ye’s portfolio was the cancellation between Adidas and himself. Ye had partnered with Adidas to make his world-wide popular shoes the Yeezys. The shoe alone hasd made Ye millions of dollars, and since the partnership has been canceled it is probably the biggest hit to Ye’s bank

account. There are also some reports that have stated that West is no longer a billionaire due to the cancellation of the partnership with Adidas. After losing his partnership with Adidas, Ye marched into the Skechers headquarters in Los Angeles. and demanded to speak with the company to negotiate a deal for Yeezy. He came with a camera crew, and because he did not have an appointment with them, or anything of the sort, he was escorted out of the building. Kanye West also put forth comments about George Floyd’s death, stating that it was not Derek Chauvin that killed him, but the use of fentanyl that killed Floyd. This was obviously not received well, and since making these comments the family of George Floyd has filed a law-

A Guide through California’s 2022 Propositions By: Marilin Campos Online Editor-in-Chief

t is election season and Election Day, Nov. 8, is quickly approaching. Much too often, voters head to the polls without being fully informed on what they will be voting for. This year, everyone is discussing the new propositions, but what do they mean? Proposition 1 is the Constitutional Right to Reproductive Freedom. Abortion is a hot topic at the moment. With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, legal protection of reproductive rights have become uncertain in the US. Prop 1 would protect abortion and contraceptives in protected by California’s StateConstitution. Proposition 26 would allow in-person roulette, dice games, sports wagering on tribal lands. Initiative constitutional amendment and statute. The passing of Prop 26 would give tribal groups rights to include sports betting in their race tracks and casinos. Proposition 27 allows online and mobile sports wagering outside tribal lands. Initiative constitutional amendment and statute. Similarly to Prop 26, Prop 27 seeks to legalize sports betting, however, through computers and mobile apps instead. Proposition 28 calls for providing additional Funding for Arts and Music Education in Public Schools. Initiative Statute. Funding for arts and music programs in schools has always been a struggle, and Prop 28 seeks to boost funding for programs in K-12 schools. Proposition 29 will require suit against West for spreading misinformation and conspiracy for $250 million. Since making these comments, Ye has since apologized, but the Floyd family has held their position and plan to go ahead with the lawsuit. West’s attorneys have stated that Ye’s first amendment rights will be used as the defense in theis lawsuit against him. It is widely known that West suffers from mental health problems, but that does not excuse his behavior in recent weeks. He has continuously caused harm and made people uncomfortable with his behavior in recent weeks, and it is obvious that he needs the right medical help and the right people around him. For a lot of people, Kanye West is very dear to them thanks to albums like “Graduation” and “The Life of Pablo,” so seeing this for some people

On-Site Licensed Medical Professional at Kidney Dialysis Clinics and Establishes Other State Requirements. Initiative Statute. There are three major parts to this proposition: First, a physician or nurse practitioner would be required to be present during a patient’s treatment, unless there is a staff shortage. In that case, a physician would be present through telehealth. Secondly, patients would have to be made aware of physicians with clinic ownership interest. Lastly, dialysis clinics would not be able to turn away patients based on their payment method. Proposition 30 provides funding for Programs to Reduce Air Pollution and Prevent Wildfires by Increasing Tax on Personal Income Over $2 Million. This initiative would add a 1.75% tax on individuals making over $2 million. This money would be allocated to three areas: electric car incentives, electric vehicle infrastructure, and wildfire prevention. Proposition 31 is a Referendum On 2020 Law That Would Prohibit the Retail Sale of Certain Flavored Tobacco Products. Prop 31 is challenging a 2020 law that placed a ban on most flavored tobacco products. Medical experts argue that these products are harmful and target minors and people of color. Voting “Yes” would keep the ban in place, while a “No” would repeal the law and for continued sale of flavored tobacco products. Don’t forget to head to the polls Nov. 8, and vote for what you believe is best for the State of California. Remember, that every vote counts! makes them very sad to see his downfall. However, this does not excuse his behavior, and I am sure most people would agree that he needs the right help to get him back on track to a sane mind. Ye made his bed and his being blacklisted is called karma and he deserves it, so he will have to deal with whatever is coming to him.

LAFC Push Aside Austin FC in a dominating win

www.elpaisanoonline.com

The Road to the Cup runs through Los Angeles, as LAFC dominate Austin to cruise into the MLS Cup final By: Lorenzo Gaytan Jr Editor-in-Chief

lorenzo.gaytan5913@my.riohondo.edu

T

he Road to the MLS Cup is currently running through LA, as Los Angeles Football Club host newcomers Austin FC, in the 2022 Audi MLS Cup Western Conference Final. Two fairly new teams to Major League Soccer with LAFC being in their fifth season in the league and Austin, their second. The tale of the tape coming into this game is a long one, with Austin having it out with LA the entire season. LAFC topped the Western Conference with 64 points while Austin trailed them with 56 points. They met twice this season and Austin dominated LA in both meetings losing 1-2 at home, and 4-1 in Austin. However, those two loses didn’t deter LAFC as they dominated the rest of the league ultimately clinching the Supporters Shield on the penultimate day of the season in Portland as forward (FWD), Denis Bouanga scores his first goal for the team. Austin FC continued to be the second best team in the West as well, with (FWD) Sebastian Driussi leading MLS in goals with 25. As the Playoffs began, two different roads brought these teams here. LAFC began with a bye game as they automatically qualified for the Western Conference Semi-Finals while Austin had to play in the first round against Real Salt Lake. Austin survive on a penalty shootout and advance to take on FC Dallas while LAFC welcomed hometown rivals LA Galaxy for an “El Traffico” Semi-Final. LAFC defeated the Galaxy 3-2 with a late game winner from (FW) Christian “Chicho” Arango, while Austin dominate Dallas in a “Texas Derby” semi-final, winning the game 2-1. Two powerhouse teams come to fight one last time to see who will advance to the Audi MLS Cup Final, the veterans with playoff history, or the 2nd year rookies with bright futures ahead of them.

First Half. At the end of the first half, LAFC lead 1-0 as they dominate Austin, leaving them with only one shot at the break. While possession is about equal, LAFC have looked dangerous going forward leaving Austin’s defense scrambling. The physicality in midfield has allowed the black and gold to move freely just waiting for someone to win their battle and split the defense with a good ball. Austin need to be weary of LAFC’s late game resurgences, as LAFC dominate the second half of games, scoring a league best 45 goals after the halftime interval. However, Austin Midfielder (MID) Diego Fagundez will be key in winning the ball and driving it up the field. Austin also need to pull the best out of (FWD) Sebastian Driussi who has been uncharacteristically quiet this half. The MLS Goal scoring leader has been neutralized by the physicality in defense and midfield. However, postseason football is an unforgiving matter, and with LAFC only leading by one goal, anything can happen in the next 45 minutes. Second Half Big change at the half, Sebastian Driussi and (FWD) Moussa Djitte are working more as a strike partnership. Driussi and Djitte bouncing off of each other should begin to allow Austin to open up more and release their fullbacks. It also stops Driussi from dropping deep into midfield to worry about defending, and allows him to get a little more creative to open up the play. So far its pressuring the LAFC defense giving them some scares. Number 9, Chicho Arango came off for (FWD) Mahala Opowku to a standing ovation from the home crowd. His performance this postseason definitely increases his chances for the Landon Donovan MVP award at the end of the season.

Austin’s attack must have still been in Texas because they didn’t show up to for this game. Poor defending and no attacking threat is really what hurt Austin overall, and LAFC’s attacking press didn’t give Austin a moment to breath. As the match ended, The 3252 and the entire stadium begins to sing “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye!” by Steam, to Austin’s Fans and Austin FC. LAFC are your 2022 MLS Western Conference Champions! Post Game LAFC reach the MLS Cup final for the first time in the teams history. LAFC manager Steve Cherundolo becomes the tenth coach in MLS history to reach the MLS Cup final in their first season as a head coach in the league.LAFC dominated Austin FC to keep the first clean sheet in LAFC history. For the first time since 2003, the two number one seed’s in each conference will face off After the match, Steve Cherundolo had this to say in the post-match press conference “We’re excited to be in the MLS Cup final. That was our objective from day one. I think the guys did an emphatic job of making sure there was only one team playing here next Saturday. Its, I think, the best I’ve seen this year of them implementing our game plan from the first minute to the very end, which gives us coaches and fans, and hopefully everybody watching a better feeling watching the game and not worrying until the final minute.” “I’m very proud of the guys tonight and what I experienced in the locker room is still a hunger and want for more, and we’ll keep that level of focus as high as possible for a week, and hope to have a similar press conference next Saturday.” LAFC will face the Philadelphia Union, Saturday Nov. 5th, at the Banc of California Stadium for the 2022 Audi MLS Cup Final.

Rio Hondo’s Women’s Volleyball Dominates A Win Against Desert College By: Mia Alvarez Online Sports Editor

mia.alvarez1430@my.riohondo.edu

T

he Lady Roadrunners swept the floor against the visiting Roadrunners of Desert College with a score of 3-1 in Whitter on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022. They just came back from dominating a 3-2 win against Mt. SAC last Wednesday, Oct. 19. The First Set Rio Hondo started off the first set very strong with a win of 22-25. They won by just 3 points ahead of Desert. In the beginning of the first set, the Lady Roadrunners were a little shaky. They were lacking some energy on the court. Eventually, the ladies started to make some dives, spikes, and bursts of energy were coming from the sidelines that evening. The first set was a bit of a challenge for the Lady Roadrunners, but they pulled through with a win. The Second Set During the second set, the Roadrunners continued to play strong. They started to get their mojo back from the first set. Middle hitter Jayleen Garcia, #16, and outside hitter Jennifer Martinez, #12, both freshman at Rio Hondo College were a dynamic duo on the court by making sure the ball didn’t get on their side of the net. Rio won the second set with a score of 18-25. The Roadrunners made a kill against Desert. Setter Haedee Estrella, #15, sophomore and setter Daisy Macias-Cruz, #5, freshman had the best energy on the sidelines. They were cheering on their teammates with different chants, and they even had little pom poms that they were shaking. All the Lady Roadrunners needed was to win in the third set in order to sweep Desert. The Third Set The Lady Roadrunners started off the third set with confidence. They were determined to end the game. Outside hitter Nadine Oronoz, #7, sophomore, was pulling out great serves. Also, outside hitter Faith Lee, #8, sophomore, had amazing saves through-

out the set. In addition, left back Daniela Sanchez, #1, sophomore, made a save with just one hand. Rio Hondo was pulling all the tricks in the court but Desert College started to gain the lead. Desert won the third set with a score of 25-20. The Fourth Set It all came down to the fourth set. Would Rio Hondo add to their winning streak or get defeated by Desert college? There was a lot of energy on Rio’s sideline, and they wanted to win this set to keep their two-game winning streak alive. In the game, the girls really worked together as a team. Their opponents were getting upset with how the game was going. The Lady Roadrunners put a spell on their opponents. Everytime Desert College scored, it was out. Maybe they were mesmerized by how amazing the Roadrunners were playing on the court. Rio Hondo won the fourth set with a score of 17-25. The Postgame Interviews During postgame, setter Faith Wada, #4, sophomore gave her thoughts on how it feels to be the State Player of the Week. “It feels really cool, I wasn’t really expecting it. I feel like it is all my teammates, honestly, because I don’t do that much. They are the ones swinging. They are the ones passing to me,” said Wada. Despite winning three sets, outside hitter Nadine Oronoz, #7, sophomore, expressed her feelings about the game. “Everybody was just not feeling each other as much as we used to. We are really rowdy, and we were just kinda like, oh whatever, but we still got the win though,” stated Oronoz. Next, the Lady Roadrunners will take on the Falcons of Cerritos College. The conference game will take place on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022 at Cerritos College in Cerritos at 6 pm.

The Roadrunner of RHC The storied history of our mascot is shared and we explain why the roadrunner is important to us Rio Hondo College mascot Gonzales,” Road Runner is By Jeffrey Barragan Copy Editor

jeffrey.barraganramos6969@my.riohondo.edu

R

io Hondo College opened in 1963. The following year, as the school waited for its campus to be built, its mascot was already determined, a bird local to the hills, and to US Southwest and much of Mexico. In those initial years, the Roadrunner mascot and bird was a perceived symbolic part of the community college’s identity and local landscape.

The Rio Hondo College Mascot An article published in the first edition of El Paisano, “NOSOTROS SOMOS PAISANOS” “Desert Runner Brings Luck” by Dick Haslam, tells the origin story of the Rio Hondo College Roadrunner and El Paisano. According to Haslam, “The roadrunner was chosen as Rio Hondo mascot. . . by the student body. . . The first election ended in a tie between Roadrunner and Los Dorados. In the runoff election the Roadrunner won by 18 votes.” By the time the first edition of El Paisano was printed and released on Oct. 8, 1964, Rio Hondo College was looking for a design for its already designated Roadrunner mascot. So, to give the school’s new mascot a tangible identity, a contest was announced. Students attending one of the two Rio Hondo campuses were able to enter. But with the animated Road Runner character airing in “Fast and Furry-ous” on TVs across the nation at the time, an uncredited story in the newspaper made it clear that the submitted designs had to “be the original work of the student, and the Warner Brothers’ cartoon character, the Roadrunner,” wasn’t going to pass. Then, the winner of the contest was announced a few weeks later on Oct. 26. The design was chosen by staff members, including then-President Dr. Phil H. Putnam. The winner of the contest was . . . Ten days later, the Rio Hondo College Roadrunner made its first appearance on the first page of the Nov. 5 edition of El Paisano. The present design of the Roadrunner mascot is drastically different from how it originally looked. Today, the design features the face of black and brown Roadrunner with a yellow beak. However, in 1964, the Roadrunner appeared in its entirey as a roadrunner, with thin yellow lines. The decision to name the

the Roadrunner likely came at some point in 1963. That is the same year the location of the current Rio Hondo College campus was picked. The Puente Hills and Rio Hondo College One of many bird species you might encounter hiking around the Puente Hills is the greater roadrunner, or chaparral cock. However, you likely won’t see them flying around, but instead you’ll see them walking or running around. Yeah, roadrunners do run. Nonetheless, the fact the roadrunners were nearby wasn’t lost on the student reporters who reminisced about the history of the El Paisano newspaper name and the College’s mascot through the years–The Roadrunner. The first time a roadrunner was seen around the present Rio Hondo College campus, it was a different time, place, and even a different name or two. Really, the campus wasn’t even built yet. Two years after El Paisano began, an uncredited story published on Nov. 7, 1966, With a BEEP BEEP! ROAD RUNNER DEFIES TRADITIONS, explained why the Roadrunner was Rio Hondo’s mascot. “One of the main reasons is that Roadrunners are natives of the Whittier Hills where the new college is being built.” Roadrunners eat a lot of different insects and small animals, including mice. Not coincidentally, in “Speedy

constantly chasing Speedy Gonzales, a mouse. Decades later, in a 2008 edition of El Paisano, Professor . . . wrote his own experience of coming across a roadrunner with a lizard in its mouth on the hiking trails right outside Rio Hondo in a letter to the paper. “ . . . ” Already predetermined to find a roadrunner somewhere on the Puente Hills, the story made it feel more possible than before. And so there it was, the dirty, beautiful landscape, various types of plants, trees, dirt paths, polluted air. Knowing the trails, I navigated around easily. In a list by the National Audubon Society, roadrunners are one of dozens of bird species listed as a Stable Species in Los Angeles County. The Roadrunner and El Paisano After the Roadrunner was chosen as the College’s mascot in the mid 1960s, it was as if in a morbid-sort-of-divine way, the name El Paisano came into fruition, printed atop the very first and all subsequent editions of the College’s newspaper. Rio Hondo College’s mascot and newspaper names are closely interconnected, in part, together with the history and nature of the land. However, it’s not that straight forward. The name El Paisano was adopted, largely, in response to the Roadrunner mascot and some Mexican connotation.

High-Quality Halloween Movies By Logan Aguayo Podcast Director

logan.aguayo0746@my.riohondo.edu

W

hen it comes to Halloween, there is always the need to watch a horror movie. The only question is, which movie should you watch? First released on Oct. 25, 1978, “Halloween” brought the idea of a serial killer dressed in a jumpsuit and a mask killing on Halloween night. With the release of “Halloween,” Michael Myers was introduced and would soon be a big horror icon. “Halloween” is a classic horror film that is worthy of watching on Halloween night, when the film takes place. Released May 9, 1980, “Friday the 13th” followed the story of teenage camp counselors trying to survive the night. This iconic slasher film paved the way for many other horror films and is a must-see film. The sequel, “Friday the 13th: Part 2,” released on May 1, 1981, introduced horror

icon Jason Voorhees. Both films follow camp counselors trying to survive the night, but with a different killer, Jason Voorhees, rather than his mother, Pamela Voorhees. Released Oct. 1, 1974, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” introduced Leatherface, a chainsaw-wielding killer who wears a mask of human flesh. Leatherface, another horror icon, attacks the protagonists of the film as they try to survive and escape from him. Yet another cornerstone of the horror film genre, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is a must-watch film for horror enthusiasts. The three horror franchises mentioned above are all iconic in their unique way, and the first film of every series deserves a watch. Halloween, a night horror prevails, is the perfect time to watch these classics for a good scare.

Apple's Products switching to USBC? By: Matthew Medina News Editor

ue to the new European Union laws, all apple products are required to have USB-C ports. After years of asking from apple users around the world, Apple products will now be manufactured with USB-C ports. The European Union passed legislation that states that all phones and tablets sold in the European market are required to have a USB-C port. This decision allows people who own iPhones to use

Photographed by Matthew Medina El Paisano Media third-party USB-C chargers to charge their iPhone products. Apple is not happy with this decision because they will lose their ability to sell separate products that are necessary for their iPhone or iPad. However, it’s not like Apple is unaware of the USB-C ports in their products. Apple products such as their iPads and Macbooks have USB-C ports in their system. This decision allows Apple users to use the same charger for both

products instead of buying separate chargers for each. There are still products that will need to use Apple's Lightning connector such as AirPods and Magic Mouse and kKeyboards. So in reality, Apple really isn’t going all in on the USB-C port for every product they sell. Will this hurt Apple in the long run? Probably not. If anything, Apple will embrace the USB-C port and make their own chargers and adapters to sell in stores near you.

A Fresh Crater Detected by NASA's InSight By: Jonathon Carmona Science and Tech Editor

fresh, new crater has been detected on Mars by NASA’s InSight lander. A meteoroid that landed on Mars last year was the cause of this new crater. NASA’s InSight lander recorded a marsquake with a magnitude of 4 in Dec. 2021. This quake was the first one observed to have seismic waves ripple along the surface of Mars. It wasn’t until later that NASA realized the cause of the marsquake. As stated by NASA, the meteoroid spanned 16 to 39 feet. If this meteoroid had been heading towards Earth, it would have burned up in the atmosphere. However, Mars has a thinner atmosphere than Earth. Mars' atmosphere is not as dense as Earth’s. If Earth’s atmosphere is 100 percent dense, Mars’ atmosphere is just one percent dense. This means, it would slide right through Mars’ atmosphere

with almost no defense. Scientists determined this to be the cause of the quake after looking at before and after images of Mars using NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. They spotted a large new crater in the after pictures. According to NASA, the crater that was left behind is roughly 492 feet across and 70 feet deep. The impact took place in a region named Amazonis Planitia. NASA states this crater is one of the largest craters to ever be witnessed forming by scientists. There are many craters on Mars but they were all there before space exploration began. The meteoroid's impact also sent pieces of ice flying out of the crater.. These chunks of ice could prove to be vital for NASA’s plans to send astronauts to Mars. NASA believes the astronauts could use this ice for drinking water, agricultural needs, or even for rocket fuel. The ice was also found near the equator of Mars. The

equator, much like Earth’s equator, is the warmest part of the planet. This area would be ideal for astronauts to land and set up camp when or if the aforementioned missions take place. This is one of the last discoveries NASA’s InSight lander will provide scientists as it is losing power. InSight gets its power through the solar panels attached to it, but the dust they have picked up is starting to hinder its power. InSight landed on Mars in Nov. 2018, and since then has picked up a lot of dust including sitting through a recent dust storm. NASA expects the spacecraft to shut down within the next six weeks.

Festival of Frights is a hit! West Covina’s Festival of Frights was a smashing success for the city and the community. By: Matthew Medina News Editor

matthew.medina7081@my.riohondo.edu

T

he City of West Covina hosted their first annual “Festival of Frights” event on Saturday, Oct. 29, and it was a smash hit for the City. The event included a variety of different activities, entertainment, and delicious food to choose from. The highlight of the event was the homemade haunted maze that was created and put on by the West Covina staff. As a homemade maze, it was a lot better than most and was very scary. If you were looking to get a good scare, this was the maze for you. The event also included many options for the kids, which included a kids fun zone full of games, face painting, and a costume contest. The costume contest became one of the main attractions for the community

to watch. The contest included eight different age ranges to compete in, from 0-3 years old to seniors 55 and up. Other categories included a special needs contest and a family group contest. Entertainment on the stage included three performing acts, Folklorico West Covina, Los Socios, and Anything For Salinas. All three acts sounded amazing and it really brought the energy to this event. Interview with Roxanne Lerma. Roxanne Lerma, the Assistant City Manager of West Covina, directed the event through months of preparation and executed it to perfection with her staff. She mentioned that her staff had a big role in the events preparation, “We empowered the staff members to come up with ideas and to bring their ideas

to fruition.” She also mentioned that the event area in old town West Covina was picked for many reasons, mainly for the businesses around the area. “One of the reasons we picked this particular area was just so we can also get more foot traffic to those businesses,” Lerma said. “The community can be introduced or reintroduced to some of the businesses in the surrounding vicinity.” Lerma was ecstatic about the success of the event and was pleased on the turn out from the community, “I think it was a success, especially for the first time. I think the community really appreciated the work that went into it, the businesses definitely did.” “I think the businesses were a little bit overwhelmed by the number of customers they received tonight, but that’s a good problem to have. We got a lot of good feedback.”

Staying Frosty: Modern Warfare 2 Review The latest installment in the beloved franchise is taking the gaming world by storm.

T

he campaign for this latest edition in the Call of Duty franchise has been amazing. When you have the likes of Captain Price, Ghost, and Soap, you know you are in for some very intense action. Without spoiling much, this has been such a great story and the perfect sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare release. This year the new campaign appears to be 6-8 hours of guns and explosions in the single player mode. What I like about the campaign is that this time you get to carry more equipment in a backpack. Being able to have more items with you is a lot more helpful such as flash grenades, heartbeat sensors, knives, just to name a few. What was also a good addition is being able to create items to help you pry open a door or smoke grenades to help you escape your enemies. Being able to construct weapons such as C4’s and molotovs from items you find near you makes it feel alot more realistic. Only downside from the campaign is that your partner who can’t be controlled by you tends to not really be that helpful when it comes to taking down enemies but I do appreciate the fantastic dialogue from the characters.

Multiplayer Online Multiplayer means we are back to the grind. All new camos and weapon tweaks have been added. New maps from Crown Raceway, Valderas museum, to Al Bagra Fortress and many more for 6v6 games. Ground war maps have Sa’id, Sariff bay, Zarqwa Hydroelectric, and many more. Sixteen multiplayer maps in total, 11 traditional 6v6 Core Maps, and 5 large 32v32 Ground War maps and hopefully many more will be added later on. This year players will have the option to tune their weapon attachments once they max out their weapon. The tuning will consist of recoil stabilization, aim down sight, aim walking speed and aiming idle speed. This changes the whole dynamic as players can find what works for them and their preferences. Launch night was working well, until constant crashing from the game made it difficult to play. But the next day was not much of an issue. Definitely expect a patch update soon to fix these crashes. Overall, the game online felt a lot more smoother and better from what we got in the beta last month. Now all we are waiting for is “War Zone 2.0” to release the map Al Mazrah.

Halloween Hangover: Post Holiday Problems By: Miguel Vazquez Lifestyle Editor miguel.vazquez9988@my.riohondo.edu

H

alloween is the most thrilling holiday of the year, the holiday where men and women, big or small, celebrate the night with tricks, treats, and spooky costumes. Halloween is the night just before Christmas that everyone looks forward to. To dress wild and have fun, with the expectation of receiving loads of candy from neighbors and homely strangers for free. Although if you are still a child, your parents will say that, “too much of a good thing can be bad”. But does that apply to sweet things? Some families go all out decorating the entirety of their house, backyard, and front lawn, with giant Halloween-themed inflatables, pumpkins, etc. Others show their holiday spirit on a spectacular night. No matter, with the end of one holiday, comes the rising of another. Thanksgiving. It may just be weeks away, but that does not stop the masses from pulling out all the stops and redecorating, which is not something the average child enjoys. As a youth and a dependent, you are usually obliged to help your parents with removing all the decorations, which could take hours to days. Hours if you’ve got help and you’re not entirely dead from the night before. Days if you and your family are exhausted from the night before, and not exactly ready to replace all the decor with a

new Fall-Theme. Why is all this work, this supposed to be simple, remove and replace labor, hard? It is because sometimes our stomachs get all sick from the sweets, and our bodies simply want more sleep... To those who do not have a tedious, night shift job, we are staying up all night watching horror films, binging our favorite series, or taking to the streets for a sweet treat and fun tricks. Without a doubt, we are more sleep deprived than usual the next day. Walking, running, scaring, partying, it is all exhausting. And trick-or-treaters, who do the most of all four, really are getting their steps in. People are naturally hungry and greedy, and Halloween tends to bring those bad tendencies out of us. It is a true hangover experience. A “Halloween Hangover” experience.

Managing My Time:

Tips for Time Management By: Carlos Jimenez Copy Editor

carlos.jimenez7338@my.riohondo.edu

T

ime Management is a constant issue in people's daily lives, and making a schedule is no easy feat, so it is important to remember that when making a schedule you must keep in mind how much time you have and how many errands you have to complete. It is also crucial that you make sure you get time for yourself when checking your calendar. Of course, keeping track of time is difficult and even more stressful with each passing moment. For any individual pursuing their education and continuing with a part/full-time job and here's how. Not everyone considers school to be for them, but for those who keep their education going must have the time. Many

individuals go to school and work, which is already a disadvantage with homework or class. It can not be stressed how crucial it is to make sure to keep a calendar that strictly states what is due the next day. To be aware of time means to keep a planner and organize what you have planned, while also considering what is coming up. Starting a checklist is a small helpful habit that will keep you motivated and focused on the task at hand. No matter what tasks take priority on the list, be sure to prioritize time for yourself as well. A student's academic lifestyle should not just benefit the individual's performance but should benefit the student's personal life as well. It is crucial that your writing is legible or at least understandable to you. Color-coding your courses and highlighting special events is extremely useful

when creating distinctions between your work, educational, and personal life, as well as indicating what tasks take priority over others. If a single slot is overflowing with objectives, then it is best to note what is doable and rearrange your calendar. List what assignments are crucial to your courses and prioritize that around your work schedule, while sparing time for your well-being. Little by little you learn how to successfully execute the habits and practices.
