here have been multiple shootings along the 91 freeway over the last couple of weeks. They have happened across Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange counties. This has been a disturbing pattern to many people living in the area. As it seems like a freeway shooting is happening once a day now, many of the shootings seem to be targeted at windows. Multiple Freeway Shootings Accross Los Angeles been shot in total since April. The 91 Freeway isnʼt the only freeway with these shootings, they span east of the 15 freeway. On Thursday the 20th of May, 11 shootings were reported, the most in one day so far. Out of the multiple attacks no injuries were reported as of Thursday. Jimmy Williams, the driver, had his windows blown out while he was driving to work. He was not injured
or harmed when his windows were blown out. Williams was only shot for 10 minutes, that's when knew he had to contact the police. Dan Olivas, a California Highway Patrol Officer stated three vehicles were hit just before 6 am. another CHP Officer said another vehicle window was shattered around 6am on the 91 Freeway in Anaheim Thursday morning. In addition another vehicle was damaged around 8 am on westbound 91 near Sixth Street in Corona according to Olivera. Throughout the series of these freeways shootings on Thursday, no one was injured. Police still ask the public to please get on the Bluetooth and call 911 if they are a victim and describe every vehicle in the area. As the California Highway Patrol investigates the freeways, they believe most of the incidents appear to be BB or pellet guns. One of the CHP unit cars was shot while an officer was writing a ticket for a citizen. No one was injured when this had happened, however if another driver reacted this wouldʼve been a bigger mess. Many authorities are still unsure if some of these incidents can be due to gravel being kicked up by a big truck. Yet still most of these accidents are sure due to suspects shooting vehicles with a pellet gun.
Friday morning around 8 am a young six year old boy was shot on the 55 Freeway near Chapman Avenue. The boyʼs mother was on her way to drop him off to school when the road range had occurred. Officers quickly responded to the scene and rushed the boy by ambulance to the Children's Hospital of Orange County where he later passed away. The investigators on the scene do not know how many shots were fired from the suspect. There was no description of the shooter. However the suspect's vehicle was described as a white sedan which couldʼve been a Volkswagen. The 55 Freeway was shut down for most of the day. The car had a bullet hole on the trunk, which the bullet went through and killed the young boy in the back. Although there have been many shootings in the freeways, this was not related to the shattering incidents the freeways have been happening lately. A GoFundMe has been set up to help out the boyʼs funeral funds.

ive counties of Oregon have become the latest to support seceding to Idaho. In total seven counties, Union, Baker, Grant, Lake, Malheur, Sherman, and Jefferson, have voted to support the grassroots “Greater Idaho” movement. Formally called, Move Oregonʼs Border for a Greater Idaho, the movementʼs goal is the proposed state of Greater Idaho to include all con-
servative counties in Oregon, Northeastern California, and Southern Washington. The movement started in 2020 as Oregon began having cultural shift s. Protest and riots engulfed urban areas such as Portland in the summer. In November, Measure 110 was passed, which decriminalized narcotics for personal use. The pandemic caused many to lose their jobs and homelessness rose substantially at the same time. These issues have left many rural people of Oregon feeling like their values no longer in line with the states.
Secession is not likely to occur but it is not an old idea. Movements such as the greater Idaho movement have existed in California and Texas for years. According to KTLA 5, Northern California and Southern Oregon states have considered joining to become the state of Jefferson since the 1940ʼs. In order to become a new state to leave the United States, a vote must be passed by congress but it is highly unlikely.

Joe Biden’s new student debt plan gives students a new opportunity to pay off college debts.
resident Joe Biden promised to cancel up to $10,000 in college debt for all students as part of Covid-19 relief during his campaign, but that promise was not included in the $1.9 trillion relief package that was approved earlier this year. Biden did extend President Trump's freeze on federal student loan payments to September 30 on his first day in office. Biden also announced
a $1.8 trillion child-care plan last month. He also suggested wiping out all debt for those earning less than $125,000 who graduated from a public or historically black college or university. He has laid the groundwork for the cancellation of student debt since then, but he has yet to deliver a concrete plan or amount. Biden may

Three Shootings Occur in One Week Throughout the SGV MIMI CASTELLANOS

ast week, multiple shootings have been taking place in neighboring cities. From San Gabriel to Hacienda Heights, three shootings and deaths occurred and are under investigation. Thursday May 20, Los Angeles deputies got a call at 1am of nearby gunshots around Hacienda Heights. Arriving at the scene, an unidentified man and woman in their 20s are found with severe gun wounds. The victims were sitting in a gray car on the side of the road where they were both shot. According to Lt. Robert Westphal of Los Angeles County Sheriffʼs department, the relationship between the gunman and victims remains unknown. Westphal states both victims were injecting nitrous oxide inside the car. Westphal says, “It is common to get reports of gunshots or possible cars backfiring in the area.” He adds, “Itʼs also popular with

people street racing and nitrous oxide consumption.” The shooter is identified as a male driving a gray sedan. It is likely that the two victims were approached and confronted by an individual which the shooting occurred. While the male victim is pronounced dead at the scene, while the female is taken to the hospital in critical condition. No further information has been released. On May 17, police responded to a shooting on South Benito Avenue in Alhambra at around 9:45pm. A caller reported a 30-year-old woman being shot at her own house. An unidentified man knocked onto the residentʼs house asking for her name. Facing the shooter at her door, she was shot multiple times at her doorstep, while the gunman fled on foot. Police officers are currently investigating any relationship between the gunman and victim. The shooter is described as a 20–30-year-old heavy set Hispanic man, who is about six foot, three inches tall. He was last seen wearing a black
sweater, blue jeans and armed with a semi-automatic handgun. The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition that night and proceeds into stable conditions the following day. While the investigation is still ongoing, no further details have been released. The following day, a shooting on May 18, Tuesday evening, found one man dead in San Gabriel. The city police received a report of a shooting on West Norwood Place. San Gabriel police Lt. Kott mentions that once authorities arrived on scene, they found a man in his 20s lying on the street with at least one gunshot wound. Paramedics transported the victim to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Referring to witness statements, Lt. Kott describes two individuals walking up to the victim, while one shot at him and the other fled the scene. While Los Angeles County Homicide Detectives investigate the shooting, no further information has been provided.

fter what has been a few years of transition for Barcelona, many players and fans have been unhappy with the way Fc Barcelona has been runned. The one player that has expressed his discomfort with the way Fc Barcelona has been running is of course club legend Lionel Messi. Messi has gone as far as put in a transfer request last summer with the club he has been his entire career with. Former president Josep Maria Bartomeu had been practically run out the club by all the backlash he had been receiving in the twilight years of his presidency, and for good reason. Poor recruitment and failing to win any big trophy since their treble season with Luis Enrique in 2015, it was only a matter of time until the players would take action. Lionel Messi has always come off as a Barcelona player, and many people believed that he would stay at Barcelona forever. Last summer he shocked the entire world when he submitted his transfer request and was extremely close to signing for Manchester City, reuniting with his former coach Pep Guardiola. Things have seemed to change this season. After Josep Bartomeu departed, former president Joan Laporta was re-elected to take over Barcelona and bring them back to
their glory days. Since Laporta took over Barcelona, they have one the Copa Del Rey, and as well as being in the title race until the last few matchdays of the season. With an important transfer window this summer, it seems already that Laporta is ready to revolutionize his team. Already signing Sergio “Kun'' Aguero and Eric Garcia from Manchester City, as well as being really close to the signings of Memphis Depay and Giorginho WIjnaldum, there are plenty of reasons to be excited if you are a Blaugrana. This change of form has been the number one reason as to why Lionel Messi has decided to stay at the club. Messiʼs good relationship with Laporta, as well as their Copa Del Rey triumph has been the turning point for Messi. Add on to that the signing of Messiʼs good friend and International teammate, Sergio Aguero, it is safe to say that Laporta is doing everything they can to try to keep Messi at Barcelona. The biggest problem that Barcelona are facing is financially. It will be very expensive to keep Lionel Messi at the club, especially due to the financial crisis that Barcelona are currently in due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Barcelona are currently over 1 billion euros in debt, and with a yearly salary of 70 million euros for Lionel Messi alone, it will be a real struggle to raise the funds needed for the club.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced this past Friday that they will be opening their gates to full capacity starting June 15. The announcement was made prior to the team's away series against the San Francisco Giants. In the announcement, the team announced that all
games held at the stadium prior to the 15th will still be held at limited capacity. Those games include a home series versus the Giants, Cardinals, Rangers, and Phillies. Fans will continue to be seated in separated pods or in the fully vaccinated area of the stadium. The announcement comes amongst a Dodgers team which has recently won 11 of its past 12 games, the most recent
being a sweep of the rival San Francisco Giants. The recent surge comes after the Dodgers went through a rough stretch at the end of April and early May. The return to full capacity will mark the very first time since back during the 2019 season that Dodger Stadium will have a full house of 56,00 people. The team also announced that single-game tickets for the seriesʼ starting on June 15 will

The Dodgers will return back to full capacity on a Tuesday, it will be the second of a three game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. be available starting Thursday, May 27th. However, the Dodgers will not be the only California team set to return to full capacity though. The Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres also announced that they will be reopening their home ballparks in mid-June. The Angels have set to open Angel Stadium to full capacity on June 17 for their series against the Detroit Tigers. As for the Padres they will also have full capacity at Petco Park on June 17 for their series against the Cincinnati Reds. The Padres announced that for their full capacity re-opening, they will hold an “Opening Day” for the Padres. The team is set to celebrate front-line workers and their role for making the reopening possible.
As for the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics, no official announcements have been made about a full capacity re-opening yet. There is reason to believe that something may be revealed soon amongst the idea. Other teams across the country have similarly also started announcing their very own reopening plans. The Brewers, Cardinals, and Braves all announced them going back to full capacity as well too. This signals the true first signs of normality being brought back to the fans of the game. Lakers and Clippers Lose Game One

BA Playoffs kicked off last week and it did not disappoint. Both the Lakers and Clippers made it to the postseason again. The Lakers mission is to be back-toback champs. The Clippers mission is to shake off the “playoff bust” label that they received last season. Both LA teams have tough matchups in Round 1. The Clips have to hold off a Dallas Mavericks team that's looking for revenge from last season. Lakeshow is facing the Phoenix Suns, the second best team in the Western Conference. Both LA teams are off to a rough start after both losing game one of their series. The Clippers have battled hard this season. Paul George has been playing like his Indiana Pacer days by averaging 23.3 PPG, 6.6 RPG, and 5.2 APG in the regular season. Kawhi Leonardʼs consistency and Rajon Rondo's veteran savvy have also helped the Clips reach the playoffs. Their first obstacle is the Luka Dončićʼs led Mavericks that want revenge. Last season, the Mavs were bounced out of the playoffs in Game 6 versus the Clips. Now with more playoff experience, Luka came

The Clippers swept the Lakers in all their regurlar season games during the 2021 season. This year, they have a chance to face off in the playoffs. in hot. Lukaʼs statline for Game 1 was 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. The final score was 113-103. After Anthony Davis and LeBron James missed time, the Lakers were in a slump and found themselves in the Play-In games. The duo returned right on time to face MVP candidate
Steph Curry and the Warriors. After a tough battle, the Lakeshow moved into the 7th seed to play the Phoenix Suns. The Suns success has a lot to do with the addition of veteran Chris Paul. His leadership and play has elevated the whole team and got them to a high seed in the playoffs. The Lakers
had no answer for Devin Booker who dropped 34 points in their 99-90 victory. Both of our LA teams have their work cut out for them. The Lakers have a harder road to the finals than they did last year. The other members of the team need to rally behind AD and LeBron if they want to
come out on top of this series. As for the Clips, stepping up as the “defensive dogs” that they proclaim to be will be the X-factor in beating Luka. Maybe weʼll see these two LA teams in the conference championship if they can pull it together.

I
ʼve been playing video games for as long as I can remember. I grew up with Playstation 2 and original Xbox games. With classics like Ratchet and Clank, Star Wars BattleFront, and even Call of Duty. But back then I also uncovered some hidden gems that were steeped in artistry. Games like Max Payne with its strange pulp comic stylings, or Path of Neo, a weirdly self-critical movie licensed game. At the time a lot of the slightly-deeper-than-surface aspects of these games were lost on me. Even so, they drew me in with their visuals and aesthetics. I was scared and paranoid in Max Payne, and grew increasingly confident in the face of the bizarre worlds of the Matrix in Path of Neo as my Neo got more abilities. As I got older, and moved into the next generation of gaming, I played tons of Assassinʼs Creed on my Playstation 3. I poured hours into the series, and now I could understand the intricately woven conspiracies
of the game. At the same time I indulged myself in the total mayhem of Battlefield Bad Company 2. Huge maps, double the players as any Call of Duty, and everything could be blown up. I loved it. But more than just playing online, I loved the story and characters. To this day I could still make reference to Sweetwater and Miller talking about the woman on their comms. All this to say that, as I got older I started to realize that video games actually took a lot of work and direction to make, and were huge triumphs of collaborative creativity and skill. And I started to realize it was more than just one aspect of the games. Visuals Video game visuals have just gotten better and better throughout the years. Weʼve come a long way from the triangular Lara Croft. To me, visuals are the first statement video games make. Game designers develop environments that are practical while also pulling the player into the game world. This might seem like an obvious

Some of the games that might really surprise you with how artsitic they can be are ones that are multiplayer focused. I took this screenshot in the middle of a game of Apex Legends on the Olympus map. Olympus is supposed to be a Utopian sky-city. It's marked by smooth sterile whites and vibrant greenery in living areas. The level design is diverse and healthy regarding gameplay too. But, like the newest character in the game says, I never looked up. When I did, finally, I realized even the skybox carried the theme of the whole map, sporting large not-so-distant moons. It was surprising to say the least.
statement for something like What Remains of Edith Finch or Journey, and their respective fantastical environments that the player does little more than walk through. But itʼs also in games that focus more heavily on other aspects of video games. Like, for example, one that focuses on Role Playing Game elements. For this I point you to Mass Effect and Fallout. Both are full of style and environments that build the worlds of their games. One of my favorite art choices in Mass Effect is the Lovecraftian design of the Reapers. These larger-than-skyscraper godlike dreadnaughts from darkspace that resemble massive cuttlefish. Their presence is marked by audio cues and overwhelming opposition composed of fallen allies. Even as the main character, seeing a Reaper means to run, and all it needs for that is to be visible. Fallout, on the other hand, decorates its post-apocalyptic environments with weird retro-futuristic tech and fashion from the 50ʼs. Nothing says apocalypse like standing on the edge of a cliff overlooking a crater filled with giant radioactive scorpions. Audio Music in video games is super important for the overall feel of the games. The industrial distant groans of metal in Fallout New Vegas, or the somber songs of times past, also in New Vegas: Music sets the mood. But no other series comes to mind more when thinking about music in games than Assassinʼs Creed. AC gets a lot of flak about re-interpreting a really popular theme, but nevertheless, incorporates music beautifully into the game. The main theme for AC is an operatic arrangement of gentle, passionate singing accompanied by soft synths. But, the most popular and most used song is Ezioʼs Family, named for the main character of the se-
quel. Ezioʼs family is a choir and guitar song that emphasizes the explorative attitude of young Ezio, while serving as a memory of better times as he gets older. Itʼs prominence in the series illustrates how it perfectly encapsulates the exhilaration of the close escape onto a rooftop that is so integral to the first half of the AC series. Story-telling I wanted to prove a point that the art in video games doesnʼt have to be just from the story. When people think of art and games the immediate thought is the writing. Are the characters good, how good is the setting, what are the themes, the same approach one would have to movies or a book. Games bring a new aspect to narrative however, and that is player action. You are directly involved with the game and the story as you play through it. In my opinion thatʼs why scenes like Modern Warfare 2ʼs airport massacre, or GTA Vʼs tourture scenes are particularly uncomfortable. Youʼre inherently involved. But what about games
where you make the choice directly? Well, once again, Mass Effect comes to mind. Iʼm pretty attached to this game series. I fell in love with it when I was around 9, and saved and scoured until I could get all 3 games, used. I grew up with Mass Effectʼs Tali and Garrus, so to me, when I played, I was the main character. My sentiment for the game made me realize something. I related to some of the stories being told in the game. And more than that, it was helping me deal with some of my insecurities and teenage angst. When Garrus wanted revenge against a man who betrayed him, I didnʼt hesitate to help him. To me, he was a friend, and his problems were mine. It put my knack for getting involved in peopleʼs disputes into perspective. When Tali was willing to be exiled from her people, just to keep her dadʼs name from being sullied, I understood her. Family over everything. I resonated with that, and to me, when something resonates with you like that, when you connect with it, that's when you know: Itʼs art.

Red Dead Redemption Online takes place in the same map as the main game. A mix of everything old Americana, from the Appalachian mountain allegories to the Mexican desert. The landscapes are vast, varied, and teeming with wildlife. I'd often find myself signing on just to explore and enjoy the enviroment. Something of note though, that was completely intended, particularly the desert, is the loneliness. When I would venture out that far south on my own, the enviroment felt oppressive and barren. Nothing good to hunt, hits to health from the heat, and a dirty horse. Successfully uncomfortable.

Summertime is coming! It’s time for sunshine and quality time with friends and family. Our summer is coming back this year. Entertainment is reopening and it's time for us to enjoy summer like never before.
ummer is around the corner! School is almost over. Get ready for adventure all day, everyday. The COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020, and as a result of the global health crises, people werenʼt able to enjoy their 2020 summer season. There was a public health measure. Everyone was quarantined, required to wear masks, and distance themselves from infected individuals. Although with the vaccine being distributed and with COVID safety guidelines, it might be that summer is coming back for 2021. Here are 5 places to go for summer 2021. 1. Escape Rooms If youʼre looking for a mystery and ready to solve riddles then an escape room is perfect for you. There are many themed escape rooms to attend all over Los Angeles County. Bring family and friends and work togeth-
er as a team to solve riddles and escape a trapped room. 2. Beaches Since it will be summer and the weather might be hot, it wouldn't be so bad to hit the beach. Everyone should go to the beach for the summer. You have to go to the beach. You can go to any beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Santa Monica, and even Redondo Beach. It doesnʼt matter because going to the beach during summer time is a must. 3. Music Festivals Music festival season is coming back. Everywhere there are going to be music festivals such as HardFest, Beyond Wonderland, and many more. Check out which festivals are happening this summer online. Be sure to quickly buy tickets because the return of music festivals means tickets can sell out any minute! 4. Movie Theaters Time to hit the red carpet... at your local movie theater! Movies are coming back to
theaters. All the movies that were supposed to premiere in 2020 are going to be released in 2021. Donʼt miss out on the new feature films. Go watch a new film with friends and family. 5. Amusement Parks I heard Disneyland, Universal Studios, and Six Flags are back! Reservations are required to go to these amusement parks. Check their websites for day availability. Itʼs time to have that feeling when you go on a rollercoaster. Although summer is coming and everything is reopening, don't forget that the pandemic is not over. There are still COVID guidelines and safe healthy measures. Therefore, be sure to have fun, but do it safely with masks on and distancing.

My experience at Rio Hondo College was amazing, especially being a part of El Paisano Newspaper. Being part of the newspaper helped me develop skills preparing me for my journalism career. I am truly happy to have met Wendy Carrera. She is one of the best educators I’ve had in my education years. The media classes and El Paisano helped me understand media in a clear way. I will be continuing my education at CSULB for Journalism in Fall 2021. I am excited for what’s coming in the future. I am thankful for what Rio Hondo, El Paisano, and Wendy Carrera have taught me.

I truly look forward to using the skills I learned from Wendy Carrera and everyone at El Paisano Media in my studies at CSUF!
