California Issues Travel Advisory in Light of Recent COVID-19 Spikes
Raymond Luna for El Paisano Media
Gavin Newsom issues new travel advisory for the state of California
Ethan Huang
Reporter ethanhuang2003@yahoo.com
O
n Nov. 13, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a travel advisory in light of recent coronavirus spikes. This past week, the state of California reached a total of 1 million cases, and chances are that it will continue to climb. Governor Newsom describes that it has increased pressure on hospitals, which can lead to greater risks for “seniors, essential workers, and vulnerable Californians.”
This advisory urges people traveling from out of state or internationally to self-quarantine for 14 days after arrival. Furthermore, it recommends that they limit interactions with immediate household. In addition to this, the advisory defines “essential” and “non-essential” travel for reference. It states that “travel that is considered tourism or recreational in nature” to be non-essential. Meanwhile, essential travel includes “work and study, critical infrastructure support, economic ser-
vices and supply chains, health, immediate health care, and safety and security.” Regulate or Recommend? A constant trend through the entirety of the pandemic is the debate over regulation. Especially during the early months of the pandemic, many protested the closing of businesses, lockdowns, and even masks. It is likely because of its controversial nature, that states like California issued simply an “advisory” rather than a mandate. The question this raises
is whether this is the reason why cases persist, or if it is simply impossible to have such requirements in a nation like the U.S. Recent reports state that Australia recorded 0 cases for the first time in five months. It is primarily because of their strict lockdowns and their citizens’ compliance that they have begun to completely reopen their major cities. So, what makes this so difficult in the United States? This likely stems from both how large the U.S. is as well as the culture established. Given
the size of the U.S. in addition to 50 different state governments, it is difficult to establish nation-wide mandates. In addition to this, the mindset on individual rights among many in the nation creates strong opposition towards full regulation. With this in mind, the future of the pandemic in the U.S. remains uncertain. Although, the travel advisory likely signals increased regulations in California to combat this new wave. However, with a new vaccine on the horizon, there is hope for the end across the globe.

Trump Speaks for First Time Since Losing Election Lorenzo Arce Reporter

ut-going President Donald Trump made his first public announcement since losing the election this Friday at the White House. He had been staying out of public view up to this point despite efforts to discredit the election through tweets and legal action. Trump began by praising Operation Warp Speed, the effort to create a Coronavirus cure. He ordered the emergency authorization of the Pfizer vaccine which is deemed to be 90% effective. Healthcare workers, senior citizens, and high-risk individuals are to receive the vaccine as soon as the order is passed. He threatened to withhold the treatment in New York until Cuomo himself approves it saying,

"As soon as April, the vaccine will be available to the entire general population, with the exceptions of places like New York state where, for
political reasons, the governor decided to say, and I don't think it's good politically, I think it's very bad from a health point, but he wants to take his time on the vaccine, he doesn't trust where the vaccine's coming from," Trump continued "...
We won't be delivering it to New York until we have authorization to do so, and that pains me to say that."
Trump declared he will not shut down the country as long as he is still in office. A large Trump supporter rally is set to take place in Washington D.C. on Saturday with the President possibly attending. He did not take any questions and let Dr. Moncef Saloui reverberate his previous statements before leaving.

He believes he’s been cheated from a victory and says he won't be leaving office in January when president-elect Joe Biden is scheduled to take over office. After expressing his thoughts on the election outcome, Trump has filed multiple lawsuits asking for a recount, on Friday, his campaign lost in courts in Michigan and Pennsylvania and dropped a lawsuit in Arizona after realizing that overturning the election outcome will be nearly impossible considering president-elect Joe Biden has won the popular vote by nearly 5 million votes and ballots are still being counted. Biden’s 77.5 million votes to date are the most for any winning candidate in U.S. history, and Trump’s 72.3 million are also set to be a high number of votes for a losing candidate.

fter democrats lost a couple of usually blue states in the 2016 election, President Elect Joe Biden became the first democrat to win Georgia's electoral votes in 28 years, the last time it was done was by President Bill Clinton in 1992. This win brought Biden’s total number of electoral votes to 309, almost a full circle moment for democrats because in 2016 that was the number of electoral votes President Trump beat Hillary Clinton by. The final number for the 2020 election is 309-232. Biden’s victory in Georgia comes from a lot of campaign work and most importantly democratic candidate Stacey Abrams who campaigned heavily for democratic candidate Joe Biden, Abrams made it a point to reach out to all of those who don't identify with either party or those who skipped out on voting during the 2016 election, Abrams has also been a big part in making sure voter suppression wasn't taking place in her home state

Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 3 Review Raymond Luna Editor-in-Chief

t just wouldn't be the holiday season without a little Star Wars in the mix. Well, Season 2 of The Mandalorian debuted back in October, but the story arc has finally picked up in this week's episode, Chapter 11: The Heiress With the first two episodes of season 2 giving us some filler episodes and a buffet of eggs for Baby Yoda to feast on, we finally get a more massive push into the Star Wars expanded
universe. In this episode, Din Djarin, The Mandalorian, safely returns the Frog Lady to her planet Trask, where she is united with her husband. She directs Mando to the whereabouts of the other Mandalorians he's been seeking per their agreement. While aboard the informant's ship, Din Djarin is blindly set up in a trap as they want to steal his precious Beskar armor from him. The informant and his crew throw Baby Yoda into a cage where a large sea creature, Mamacore, eats it. That's where Mando leaps in to rescue Baby
Yoda, at which point the informant seals the cage. As Mando tries to fight off Mamacore and save the child, three unknown Mandalorians come flying in and blast the Quarrens and informant off. That's where we get our first look at Bo-Katan Kryze, who is a significant character known in Star Wars Clone Wars and Rebels. Not only do we see her, but we finally have an answer to who WWE star Sasha Banks will be playing. She is suited up in Mandalorian armor and is playing Koska Reeves, whom we have not seen in the Star
Wars universe. So what brings the three Mandalorians here and helps Din Djarin? Well, they're after the main villain in the story, Moff Gideon. Gideon is going after Din because he wants the child, mainly to extract its powers, and Moff possesses a weapon called “The DarkSaber,” which got taken from Bo-Katan. A deal was made between Din Djarin and Bo-Katan. She will send him in the direction where he can find someone with Jedi's whereabouts, but in return, she needs him to help
overtake a ship heavily guarded by troopers in hopes of retrieving her weapon. After taking over the ship, Bo-Katan tells Mando to take the child to the city of Calodan on the planet of Corvus, where he'll find Ahsoka Tano there. Ahsoka Tano is another large character in the Star Wars Clone Wars show. She is the former padawan of Anakin Skywalker. Things are finally shaping up in this season of The Mandalorian. New episodes are available every Friday on Disney Plus.

End of Depp?

ctor Johnny Depp, known for his role as Jack Sparrow from the “Pirates of the Carribean” films, was accused of being verbally and physically abusive to his exwife, Amber Heard. Depp and Heard met in 2009 on the set of “The Rum Diary” and were later
married in 2015. In 2016, she filed for divorce from Depp and placed a temporary restraining order on him. According to Depp’s lawyers, Heard was using abuse as a way to gain a financial settlement. Johnny Depp bought a libel lawsuit against the UK company publishing, The Sun because they called him a “wife-beater” in a 2018 article. However,

Johnny Depp was asked to leave his role as Grindelwald in the production of "Fantastic Beast 3."
Judge Andrew Nicol of the High Court in London dismissed the case because Heard’s allegations were proven to be true. It was a high-profile trial that lasted 16 days. The marriage between Depp and Heard lasted only 15 months, and every factor about the relationship was uncovered, especially Depp’s toxic lifestyle. As a result of the abuse allegations, experts state that it is the end of Johnny Depp’s career. Depp was asked to resign from his role as Grindelwald from the upcoming film, “Fantastic Beasts 3.” It was planned to have Depp removed from the movie before the liberal trial. The CEO of Hollywood Branded, Stacy Jones, stated that the plan to abandon Depp “was, in fact, a very well-orchestrated plan, built over time with the lead-in to the trial.” Warner Bros began to distance themself from the actor after the trial. Johnny Depp’s abusive behavior is on the public record.
Everyone knows about Depp’s behavior because of the media. Although, if filmmakers or producers were to hire a famous figure who connected to allegations of abuse, it would show an act of acceptance. Studios would instead make a safe bet because the industries are suffering in the pandemic. Warner Bros didn’t have a choice but to say goodbye to Depp. Even though Depp got fired, he is still going to receive full compensation from the movie contract because he gets paid whether he is on screen or not. He was only in one scene when filming began. Although he will still get paid, it will be a long time until Depp books another job, especially in the film industry. For Depp to continue his acting career, he would need to accept responsibility for the abuse. Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, states that “... he’s going to be the next Harvey Weinstein.” Depp continues to deny the abuse allegations against him.

hen quarantine happened, and the citizens had to stay home, there had to be a way for distraction. Some people would draw, read, write, sew, cook, clean, or even play video games. For games, yes, there were some video games released, but not consoles. As of this month, new consoles have been launched. Sony and Microsoft are working on the next versions of the PlayStation and the Xbox. That would be the “PlayStation 5” and “Xbox Series X.” The “Xbox Series X” got launched at participating retailers worldwide on Nov. 10th, 2020. As for the “PlayStation 5,” the console got released on two dates. It would be on Nov. 12th in the U.S., Australia, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and New Zealand for the first release date. The second date would be on Nov. 19th in the U.K. and for the rest of the world. One could be curious and wonder: will the previous Xbox games work on the “Xbox Series X?” Good news! The “Xbox Series X” is compatible with many games across the four generations of Xbox. One may purchase it at GameStop, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and other locations. For example, GameStop stores may also have limited stock. A customer
would need to call their local store, though, for availability. For the “PlayStation 5,” the price would be an estimate of $499 for the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive on Nov. 12th in the U.S, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. If one would like to get the Digital Edition, the price starts at $399. The PS5 would be available at Target, GameStop, Best Buy, and other locations to buy one. For example, if the PS5 is out of stock in many places or one is waiting for a discount, GameStop confirmed that they would have the PS5 in stores on Black Friday, Nov. 27th, when stores open at 7 A.M. After both consoles got launched, the “PlayStation 5” and “Xbox Series X” sold out in many places. The reason would be because some customers had one or both of the consoles pre-ordered, or customers were waiting until the consoles were released and bought it right away. Others are waiting for reviews to be launched from customers based on the consoles. The reviews would help decide which consoles for one to purchase. Maybe some consoles would be returned because the customer displayed it, and the price would get reduced, so someone would have the advantage of saving money. Not only would you save money for that reason, but there are also more discounts
in the future. For example, there would be holiday deals and Black Friday. With this, one would have the advantage of saving even more money. The
only problem would be that the consoles may sell out quickly online or at stores. So ready to purchase one quick! Yes, a person could get the “Play-
Station 5” and “Xbox Series X” for free, but as a gift, so maybe there could be hope for you if you want one!

Kim Ng Becomes First Female General Manager in MLB History! Enrique Medina Sports Editor

im Ng made history Friday, officially becoming the new general manager (gm) of the Miami Marlins. With the deal, Ng (pronounced “Ang”) officially becomes the first female general manager in MLB history and breaks one of the games and one of North America’s sports longest barriers. Ng officially becomes the first female general manager in North American sports history among the four major sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL). Ng, 52, brings along a very established and impressive resume to her belt, one of the best ever for a first-time general manager. Ng, officially started her work in baseball back in 1990, thirty years ago, with the Chicago White Sox. She worked as an intern with the White Sox from 1990 and worked her way up into becoming the American League’s director of waivers and records. She stayed with the White Sox until 1996 and later got a job two years later with the New York Yankees as the assistant general manager to Brian Cashman. Ng stayed in New York from 1998 until 2001 where she won 3 championships and made the World Series every year of her tenure with the Yankees. Ng would continue with her role as assistant GM, but in 2002 made the move to the Los Angeles Dodgers. She stayed as

Since 2012, Ng has worked in the Major League Baseball Commissioner’s Office in a very high role before landing the job as the Marlins GM. For Ng, it was a position and day years in the making. Ng had previously interviewed at least four times for a GM position in the past, but had never gotten the job. Amongst the breakthrough moment is Derek Jeter, Miami Marlins part-owner, and chief
executive. Jeter is regarded as one of the best shortstops and one of the best players in the history of baseball, winning five championships with the New York Yankees during his career. Jeter, who played from 19962014, played with the Yankees during the time of Ng’s stint as assistant GM with the Yankees. Jeter pulled the trigger and made the hire knowing the amount of hard work Ng has put into the game. “We look forward to Kim bringing a wealth of knowledge and
championship-level experience to the Miami Marlins,” Jeter said in a statement after the hiring of Ng. With women taking more jobs in sports in the past few years as coaches, front office executives, owners, etc, there has been outstanding accomplishments achieved. For Ng, she will now become the highest-ranking woman in baseball operations among all MLB teams. “This challenge is one I don’t take lightly. When I got into this business, it seemed
unlikely a woman would lead a major league team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals,” Ng said in a statement Friday. Ng also becomes only the second person of Asian descent to lead an MLB team, following now San Francisco Giants GM Farhan Zaidi. Ng also serves as an example, an embodiment to women and girls everywhere that with hard work and dedication, they can set their sites and ultimately make it anywhere.

Is it Worth It? Lorenzo Arce Reporter

S
ince the pandemic started, I’ve started to feel some type of way towards people. People still living their best life as if others aren’t getting Covid on a mass scale, specifically. I’ve sacrificed my social life and many opportunities in order to insure the safety of my family. If anyone from my family gets sick, it is not going to be because of me. I felt guilty and paranoid after the handful of times I’ve seen friends of mine these past eight months. It’s not like I invite them over or anything, they just show up sometimes. I’ve kept my mask on and didn't even let them inside my house to be cautious. What was I supposed to do, tell them to go away? On the other hand, I know some girls that fly to Houston to party at the clubs every weekend like their grandma isn’t scared shitless at home. Other people I know are frequently
?
at bars and clubs, that are still secretly open, like a damn thing isn’t wrong. I have lost a lot of respect for many people because of their carelessness.
I don’t even believe family parties or public events of any kind are acceptable at this time. Just to clairify, I am not talking about those working to
support themselves or others. The person who likes to be in the wilderness or takes a casual walk around the block isn't who I'm pointing out either.
Those still putting themselves around hundreds of people for pleasure is who I am referring to. Birthday parties and weddings can wait. Yet again, its easy for me to say. I am not much of a people person. I don't need relationships with others as much as most people do. That is why I can handle isolation. The living situations in everybody's household is different and may compelled some to seek comfort or safety elsewhere. But what about people in prison? They are isolated from society amongst dangerous individuals against their will. They lack the luxury’s most people have and they still find a way to make it alive out or die inside. With that being said, many people just don't want to adjust to the new reality for the greater good. So I ask, is it really worth it? Is your moment of gratification worth your life? Is it worth the life’s of your family and friends. It’s not to me.

never thought I would be able to buy tickets to see my favorite band for only $15 but thanks to the stay at home orders, it is now a reality. The coronavirus has caused mass cancellations of concerts, festivals, and tours. But not even a pandemic could stop artists determined to connect with their fans through music. Artist like John legend, Diplo, and Meg Thee Stallion have live streamed concerts for their fans at a discounted rate or even for free. But are they worth it?
Sure, you won’t have to pay $20 for a beer or wait in long lines for the restroom but what about the ambience? There’s nothing like walking into a venue and seeing your favorite artist up close, or running into a friend who shares the same music taste with you. Remember waiting in line for merch and deciding on which t-shirt you were going to take home? It may be an odd thing to miss but not having live music for about 8 months will do that to you. Daisy Hernandez, a Whittier native recently “attended” Billie Eilish’s virtual concert and absolutely loved the experience. When asked, she said, “I

had my lights off and it felt like an up close and personal experience. I think I like it better than having to deal with crowds and expensive beer--real concerts seem pretty unhygienic to me now.” If you take the time to up the experience yourself, it does seem better than squeezing into a tiny seat or pushing through crowds just to see the performers. I am still unsure about how worthwhile a virtual concert will be in comparison to the real thing. However, my ticket is purchased and I am excited to see how it turns out.
