Johnson & Johnson Vaccine on Pause Link between blood clot and J&J vaccine.

n April 13th, vaccination sites throughout Southern California are pausing distribution of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. According to the CDC website, nearly more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine had been administered in the United States. There had been many reports of symptoms from people who had received the dose. The CDC and FDA are now looking and reviewing data of the vaccine involving multiple cases of blood clots. Concerns have risen surrounding those who have received their first dose of the vaccine. Nearly 7 million Americans have received the vaccine nationwide. Who has been affected by the Vaccine so far? All of the reports had occurred to women between the ages of 18 and 48. The symptoms occurred six to 13 days after their vaccination. CDC

does not know yet if the vaccine did indeed cause these health issues. They suggest medical care if you have the following symptoms which include severe headache, backache, new neurologic symptoms, shortness of breath, and severe abdominal pain. Furthermore symptoms include leg swelling, tiny red spots on the skin also known as petechiae, and new or easy bruising. What is happening now with the vaccines? Drive up clinics across the US have switched the Johnson and Johnson dose with Pfizer and Moderna. CDC ensures the public that Pfizer and Moderna use a different technology than Johnson and Johnson are safe. The chief scientific officer at Johnson and Johnson had comments of his own. He stated, “The safety and well-being of the people who use our products is our number one priority . . .”. He went on to say, “We continue to believe in the positive benefit-risk profile of our vaccine.” Should I still get the vaccine?

Johnson and Johnson had reports of blood clots forming, primarily in women. Ages range from 18 to 48 years old with symptoms beigining as early as six days after getting the vaccine. According to the White House, even though the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is on hold there are still enough vaccines. The CDC and White House still encourage everyone to take the vaccine. There are enough of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine to give the dose to 300 million Americans. However to some people, their trust on the vaccine has fallen. According to Dr. Kavita Patel, she says it will be harder to convince others to take the vaccine. She states, “It will set us back, because we already have some patients who were already a little skeptical to use this as a reason to say ‘Look, why trust this vaccine if I can’t trust another vaccine’.” In 13 states in the US new infections have shot up at least 25% over the past 2 weeks. Michigan had a hard hit with cases up more than 62%. Should I be concerned if I got the vaccine? The CDC states if you had gotten the vaccine more than three weeks ago, then you

shouldn’t worry. Chances of you developing a blood clot is extremely low. Although if you had received the vaccine within the last three weeks your risk is also low. However they recommend you watch out for possible symptoms of a blood clot. Symptoms of the following: severe headache, blurred vision, fainting, seizures, pain in your chest or stomach, leg pain or swelling or shortness of breath. Dr. Fauci thought

President Joe Biden’s chief medical advisor Dr. Fauci, had his own thoughts on the federal regulations. According to Dr. Fauci, he believes that the US will resume using Johnson and Johnson Vaccines by Friday April 23, 2021. He states, “I would be very surprised if we don’t have a resumption in some form by Friday.” Fauci later on mentions, “I don’t really anticipate that they’re going to want to stretch it out a bit longer.

US-Mexico Border Situation Worsens by the Day

Lorenzo A rce News Editor

S

ince the begining of the year, larger numbers of immigrants have flooded the US-Mexico border than ever before. Activists and members of the Latino community have looked to put blame on someone or a certain group for the crisis, but the situation is not a black-and-white one. The surge began amid former president Donald Trump’s campaign to build a wall along the border sparking controversy amongst his opponents. Trump also increased the number of Border Patrol and Customs camps along the border. According to USA Today, the original “cages” were started by the Obama administration in 2014 to hold only unaccompanied children until the Department of Health and Human Services housed them; a process that took no more

than 72 hours. Trump altered the system, ordering border patrol agents to separate the children from their older family members. A “zero tolerance” policy was also enacted, which holds every illegal immigrant caught within the US in border patrol custody until their prosecution date. Furthermore, if one member of an immigrant family was detained the rest were to be arrested and put in detention centers as well. In contrast, previous administrations had a catch and release policy, letting families still reside in the US until their persecution. When this practice came under scrutiny, border patrol began expelling the children back across the border. Multiple instances of maltreatment surfaced from the facilities. For instance, the Shiloh treatment center located in Texas gave psychotropic

medication to children without the consent of their parents, according to Reuters. Biden made promises to change the situation at the border but some of them weren’t able to be kept. One of the goals of his presidential campaign was to enact more humane policies towards the immigrant communities. One of these policies that is supposed to be implemented is the “US Citizens Act of 2021." In practice, it would grant citizenship to illegals who have immedate family members who are citizens and make the process of obtaining green cards easier for those with visas. It is unlikely most aspects of the bill would be approved by Congress, but the news came as an invitation to many seeking asylum. Biden also pledged to halt the wall started by Trump and halted it’s construction and funding on his first day in office. In April, Alejandro Mayorkas, Department of Homeland Security Secretary, stated funding construction of the wall is still underway to fill “gaps." Mayorkas also stated more facilities are being built to hold the immigrant children. On April 17, Biden announced his plan to raise the cap on immigrants allowed per facility. The Biden Administration has been defensive about the situation and has given very limited public access to the

Officials such as Mayorkas are quick to put blame for the situation on the Trump administration. After months of blocking reporters from entering, he granted a small group access to Carrizo springs, a for profit detention center previously closed for being overpacked and unsanitary. The living conditions and children weren’t allowed to be filmed or photographed and certain areas were prohibited to enter; supposedly due to COVID-19 and homeland security concerns. The office of Congressman Henry Cueller later released images of the children’s living conditions of another facility in Donna,Texas. Despite most of them having masks they were still not socially distanced and had to sleep on floors. According to The New York Times, most of the immigrants

are children from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. These Central Americans are often preyed upon in Mexico, particularly in border towns. Racism towards Central Americans is common in Mexico and murders of immigrants often go unsolved. Most people leave these countries due to the gang violence, poverty, enslavement, and government oppression that interferes with day-to-day living. Vice President Kamala Harris was given the task of managing the border and reach out to governments of the immigrants to remedy the root issue. Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei stated it was Biden’s fault for implying amnesty to immigrants. According to The Washington Post, the Governors of Texas and Arizona have also openly blamed Biden for the surge due to his rhetoric.

The Effects of Loot Boxes On Mental Health the similarities were enough to encourage the study. Throughout the study, it is pointed out that there has not been much study on the topic or aspects of it. A big hope is not only that changes are made to legal systems, but that more research is done on the effects of loot boxes and addiction to prevent future problems.

he recent study done for the UK House Of Lords went over the harms of gaming loot boxes. The effects of loot boxes are both psychological and monetary. The results showed a disproportionate amount of spending on loot boxes from a small percentage of purchasers. It noted that in the dataset from the study “, around 5% of loot box purchasers in our dataset (those spending more than around £70 / $100 per month, or local equivalent) generate around half of industry revenue from loot boxes. Moreover, almost one third of these top 5% of spenders fall into the ‘problem gambler’ category.” However, the data does not show that the highest spenders are the highest earners. With no evidence that higher earners are the top purchasers, the study suggests that game developers are at fault for creating addictive systems of encouragement. The study points out “ games developers, unwittingly or not, appear to be generating outsized loot box

profits from at-risk individuals (these are likely to include both people with gambling problems or problematic patterns of video gaming) – but not from wealthy gamers.” Essentially, this means that some players are struggling with gambling addiction with regards to loot boxes. The data suggests that these players can’t help spending, and with certain markets allowing them to cash out, this is particularly concerning legally. Still, the data is far from much of the sensationalized

media surrounding the topic. Linking back to our previous article, the data on spenders also tells us about what might motivate them. The study found that “associations between loot box purchasing and problem video gaming are, on aggregate, larger than associations with problem gambling. It is therefore possible that a similar proportion of high spenders might also be classified as people who have problems with their video gaming. The data suggests a complex

relationship between lootboxes and their effects on a player’s mental health, stating “ preliminary evidence has linked loot box engagement with higher levels of psychological distress, albeit a finding that is indirect or of a small magnitude.” The study goes on to say loot box engagement is related to “both positive and negative moods.” The similarities to gambling with both the mental state of the player and the format of loot boxes is clearer in some aspects than others. However,

The culture of gaming has began to shift in a way that makes purchasing content less admirable.

arch 13, 2020 is a day I can remember so vividly in my mind as if it was yesterday. I wouldn't have known that would be the last day the world seemed normal. No masks, no social distancing and most importantly no worries. I remember everyone watching the news and trying to understand what's going on in the world. People were out rushing to grocery stores, buying out all of the medicine and toilet paper. Nobody knew exactly what COVID-19 was, or how it worked and how to treat it. The first month was pretty scary. Being inside all day and watching the news for updates was stressing me out. I was stress eating, gaining weight, and having slight panic attacks. Never in my life have I tuned

in to watch the news every single day from 11am to 1pm to watch Mayor Garcetti and Governor Gavin Newsom give COVID-19 updates. It was as if I was watching Saturday morning cartoons again. I knew the time and channel like the back of my hand. I had to find an outlet. Being cooped up inside and eating poorly was doing more harm than good. So what did I do? I did what everyone else did during quarantine. Turn to Amazon! I had just gotten into Hockey so I ordered a hockey stick, gloves and a few pucks to learn inside. Luckily, I have hardwood flooring so it was easy to learn stick handling from the living room. I would move our coffee table off to the side and put on Youtube videos to follow along when I needed a break from the news or school work. It was also my first semester back at Rio Hondo after seven years. I was really excited to be back and further my educa-

tion. I had only been on campus for about two months before we had to go on lockdown. Learning online was an experience. Finishing that Spring semester had a lot of hiccups, but that was to be expected since many of the classes aren’t taught online. By the time Summer semester began, online learning greatly improved. As summer rolled around I started to go outside a little more, apart from just grocery shopping and essential needs. I bought a pair of rollerblades and tried to learn how to skate. I had never done it before and I figured it was the perfect time to learn something new. I would look for empty parking lots to practice. Apart from learning to play hockey I went out fishing a lot more. As much as I was outside I was taking every necessary precaution to remain safe. Luckily fishing is the most socially distanced activity you

could do. I stayed away from piers and large crowds. The best way to do that is by getting up early and fishing off the surf. I would get to Newport Beach by 6am and leave by 10am before beachgoers started showing up. The seasons changed and Christmas was here in no time. It was horrible not being able to spend the holidays with family and friends. Unfortunately, COVID-19 finally caught up to me the day after Christmas. I didn’t attend any parties or gatherings, but I was still working in-person at the time which is where I probably got the virus. I was sick for a total of nine days. It was the worst sickness I had ever felt. It felt different. From the moment I woke up I knew I had it. I had every symptom in the book. The body aches, fever, chills, cough, cold, everything! I was afraid since I had developed

Asthma a few years ago from a Pulmonary Embolism. I celebrated 2021 at home and sick as a dog, but I am truly thankful that I was able to fight that horrible virus. Obviously, we're now over a year into it, and things are somewhat looking better. Los Angeles and Orange Counties are now in the Orange Tier, but we keep hearing about new Covid-19 variants being found. I am still skeptical about how quickly we came out of Purple and into Orange especially with the new variants being found in parts of California. Am I ready for in-class instruction? Not quite. There's still much that needs to be done, and not everyone is vaccinated. Until then, I remain hopeful that we'll be out of this soon, but you’ll still find me wearing a mask, staying 6ft apart and taking my classes virtually.

he whole world has been shocked with the official announcement by 12 of the biggest clubs in Europe that they will break away from their respective leagues to form and join a European Super League. The founding clubs involved include the big 6 of England; Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tothenham. As well as the big 3 in Spain and Italy; Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico de Madrid, Juventus, Milan, and Inter de Milan. The Premier League has come out and stated that any club in the premier league that decided to join this Super League will face severe punishment. The punishments that will be established will be deduction of points for clubs, fines, and even expulsion of the Premier League. Uefa have also come out to say that every club that participates in the Super League will be banned from domestic, European, and World competition. As well as possibly even banning players from playing in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. These statements by the European Super League have received extreme backlash from millions of people online. he and all the clubs involved will face. The one thing that has been interesting to see is that the teams that will be involved in the Super League are not decided by how well the clubs have performed, but instead on how much money the clubs have. Arsenal, Tothenham are just some of the teams that have been invited without having any sort of form over the last 5-10 years. Arsenal, Tithenham, Manchester United, Milan, and Inter Milan have not made a good run in the Champions League yet they have been invited over teams like Atalanta and Leicester City. German and French clubs have pulled out of the idea of the European Super League as they believe the clubs should be run by the fans, not by the rich who own the clubs that know nothing about football. The clubs in Germany are run 51% by the fans and this is the model that Premier League, Serie A, and La Liga should follow. This European Super league is a disgrace to all football fans. There is no consideration to the fans of these clubs. There is no consideration for the players who will be banned to play any other competition. This league will be about one thing and one thing only and that is money. The rich are getting richer and the fans are not even getting a look at.

fter 140 games and 28 eliminated teams, we now know the final four in this edition of the UEFA Champions League. 4 matches and 360 minutes to play. This is all that is left for us to know who will book their tickets to Istanbul and fight for Europe's most prestigious soccer competition. Both fixtures will be entertaining as we will witness Real Madrid play against Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain take on Manchester City. First will be Real Madrid who will receive Chelsea at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium on Tuesday, April 27th. This is a critical and defining week for both teams, for Madrid they are coming from a difficult week, in which they eliminated Liverpool in the quarterfinals, and they defeated their biggest rivals Barcelona. This means that Zidane’s men are now in the position to win two competitions this season, which is surprising,

because most analysts did not believe that this team was strong enough to be competing for silverware this season. Real Madrid have won this competition 13 times the most in history, so this team knows how it is to play in big matches like these. For the blues This will be their first time in the semifinals since 2014. The blue devils will have a difficult run of fixtures that can ultimately define their season. They will play 4 games in 10 days and right before the first leg they will face off against West-Ham who hold the last Champions league spot. Either team has a chance progressing into the finals, whether it be Real Madrid with their experienced squad, or Chelsea and their youth proving they can compete with anyone. Moving onto the “oil derby” it’s PSG vs Manchester City , on Wednesday April 28 Manchester City will travel to the Parc de Princes to face off last year's finalist in PSG. The match has all the headlines and rightfully so, both teams are regarded

as “elite clubs” and both have proven their superiority at their respective leagues. Both teams are finally looking to lift this trophy and crown themselves European champions for the first time in each other’s history, which makes this game even more thrilling. The French giants came from eliminating last year’s champions Bayern Munchen in a thrilling two legged match that saw Mbappe score a brace in the Allianz Arena, then keep a clean sheet at home. PSG is looking to make it past Pep Guardiola’s men who are at the top of their league and are trying to make history by winning a treble. Man city finally have a center back pairing that can play well together, but this will be their first big test against world class players such as Neymar and Mabppe. Only 4 matches remain for us to know who will make it to the final, and for anyone that is a fan of the beautiful game these fixtures are promised to be entertaining.

Series of the Year! Dodgers and Padres duel in Hugely Anticipated Three-Game Series

T

his weekend brought two familiar foes up against each other in possibly the most anticipated matchup of the young season. The Los Angeles Dodgers squared off with the San Diego Padres this weekend from San Diego’s Petco Park for a three-game series. The series would be one between two division rivals who faced each other last season during the playoffs. In

that playoff series, the Dodgers swept the Padres in three games. Since the end of last season though, an already great Padres team became even better. The Padres made huge moves this offseason with the acquisitions of pitchers Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, and Joe Musgrove, along with others. This series would see two of those three arms for the Padres. Darvish would face off with the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw in Game 2 of the series and Snell would face off against the Dodgers’ new pitching

acquisition Trevor Bauer in the final game of the series. As for game 1, the pitching matchup would see the Dodgers Walker Buehler vs rookie Ryan Weathers for the Padres. Game 1 would be an instant classic from the get-go. We saw Buehler dominate Padres hitters, we saw Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his first home run back from injury, we saw Dodgers rookie Luke Raley hit his first big league home run, and more through the first eight innings. After back and forth baseball during the first eight frames though, the Dodgers and Padres were tied at five. Come the ninth, after a Mookie Betts base hit to start the inning, the Dodgers would cash in. Justin Turner would drive in the go-ahead run putting the Dodgers up 6-5. With the nature of the game though, the Padres came back in the ninth to tie with an Eric Hosmer RBI single, plating Manny Machado. In extras, with the new extra-inning rule, starting the inning with a runner on second, the game brought even more intensity. In each of the 10th and 11th innings, the Padres left the winning run on third with inning-ending strikeouts. The Dodgers did not capitalize as well, until the 12th inning. In the 12th, the Dodgers immediately took the lead first pitch on a Corey Seager Home Run. Later they added three more, taking an 11-6 lead which would be the final score, ending

a five-hour plus extravaganza. Game 2 saw a pitcher’s duel throughout between Clayton Kershaw and Yu Darvish. Through the first four innings, each pitcher matched each other stride for stride. It wasn’t until the fifth that the Dodgers got themselves on the board first. Kershaw himself drove in the team’s first run with a bases-loaded walk off of Darvish. The 1-0 lead stuck and come the ninth, Turner again came through with a home run for insurance. The 2-0 lead set up the stage for yet another special moment in the bottom half of the ninth. This time around, the Padres Tommy Pham came to hit with runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth. Pham lined a ball to center field which Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts got a great jump on, diving and extending his body to make a game-ending diving catch. Game 3 saw Snell and Bauer for the last game of the series. Snell, who last pitched against the Dodgers in Game 6 of the World Series last year, looked for another shot at the Dodgers. In that memorable Game 6 in last year's World Series, Snell, then pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays, dominated the Dodgers through 5.1 innings, keeping them scoreless. Come the sixth inning when he was taken out of the game though, the Dodgers immediately capitalized taking the lead against

the Rays and finishing off their first championship in 32 years. That same type of intensity was there from both sides yet again, this time Snell now with the Padres of course. This time around though, the Dodgers capitalized early off of Snell with a Chris Taylor two-run home run in the second inning. From there, the game remained tight throughout with the Dodgers holding a 2-1 lead into the seventh. Up to that point, Bauer gave the Dodgers control and led things to the bullpen and Brusdar Graterol to make his season debut. The Dodgers would lose the advantage right away with Graterol on the mound, allowing Manny Machado to score on an Eric Hosmer RBI double. Things would not get better for the bullpen in the eighth as the Dodger bullpen allowed three runs. The runs came via an Eric Hosmer RBI single and two-run double from Tommy Pham, giving the Padres the lead for good and the last game of the series. Next, the Dodgers play two games against Seattle and the Padres play three games against Milwaukee. The two teams will follow up their series again next week as they face off at Dodger Stadium from Thursday-Sunday.

Jamal Murray Suffers a Career Altering Injury Justin Gomez Reporter

justin.gomez6391@my.riohondo.edu

J

amal Murray is the Denver Nuggets star point guard who led his team to the western conference finals last year. This year he is averaging 21 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. On Monday, April 12th, he suffered a really bad injury against the Warriors, tearing his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Therefore he will be out for the rest of the season. ACL tears are savery knee injuries that require surgery and an extended recovery period. We may not see Jamal Murray play another game till late next season, depending on how the recovery process is going. Although it is a very serious injury, this does not spell the end of Murray’s career. In regards to the Denver Nuggets, losing their star point guard hurts their chance at an NBA title drastically. The front office did a great job of acquiring Aaron Gordon from the

Orlando Magic to help out Murray and Nikola Jokic. Now that Murray is gone, this might lead to the downfall of this Nuggets team. The team will most likely still make the playoffs after probably dropping a couple of places in the standings. When it comes to winning a title, it’s gonna be a lot harder to beat top teams like the Lakers and Clippers without their starting point guard. At this point they can only hope for a speedy recovery from Jamal Murray and hope he can play come next season. First off, Jamal Murray will definitely need surgery. After that is when the recovery period will really start. Murray will have to make sure he doesn't rush this recovery process and just come back to get hurt again. People know how hungry these NBA players are to compete with one another. If Murray wants to come back and have a big impact with his team then he needs to make a full recovery and make sure he is back to 100%. It is important to

take as much time as he needs. Klay Thompson has missed a whole season and he still hasn’t fully recovered. Hopefully once he comes back he can go back to that lethal shooter he has always been. Same thing goes with Murray, take that time and whenever he comes back, he can go back to being the Nuggets star player. The only thing we can do is hope he has a safe and speedy recovery. A lot of players in the NBA have actually suffered this injury. The scary part about it is that they don't come back the same. Some players that have suffered this injury are Derrick Rose, Baron Davis and Klay Thompson. The one that most people know about is Derrick Rose’s due to how much his game changed. Before the injury Rose was an up and coming player who just won MVP. He also led his Chicago Bulls team to first in the eastern conference before getting hurt in the first round of the playoffs.

here are different protein shakes and green shakes with different ingredients. Each ingredient plays an important role that can help your body. Recently, I discovered a green juice on the social media platform, TikTok. In the video, it showed an individual making a green juice with the following ingredients, pineapple, ginger, cucumber, lemon, and of course water. The first time I tried it was very sour. Therefore, I decided to add spinach and celery to the drink. It tasted like the celery and spinach together. I have been drinking the homemade juice for a week now and so far, I feel great. I feel healthy and full of energy every time I drink it. All the ingredients in the green drink is packed with nutrients that help your body be active and alive. 1.
