R

uth Bader Ginsburg, best known for her accomplishments in the United States Supreme Court, has died at the age of 86. Ruth Bader Ginsburg paved the way for many women and minorities with her powerful actions against conservatives. She was a scholar, lawyer, judge, justice and a mother with dreams of equality becoming our normality. Justice Ginsburg life was filled with many struggles that motivated her to keep fighting. She lost her mother at

a young age. Her mother was her biggest supporter when it came to education. She was one of 10 females at Harvard Law in the 1950’s when most believed a woman did not deserve that level of education she was receiving. While navigating motherhood and also being a wife, judge Ginsburg became the first female member of Harvard Law Review, President Carter nominated her to be a federal judge in 1980, and in 1993, President Clinton appointed her a spot to serve as a Justice in the Supreme Court, those were only some of her accomplishments but needless to say Justice Ginsburg

continued to use her platform and her career to break gender stereotypes and embodied what it meant to be fearless for the people of the country she served. In a 2011 New York Times article Ginsburg said, “I surely would not be in this room today, without the determined efforts of men and women who kept dreams alive, dreams of equal citizenship.” Ginsburg had a vision where there wasn’t such a thing as women’s work and men’s work, she believed women and men deserved the right to work or be a stay at home parent without being looked down on because of

local homeowner shot two intruders on Friday morning in the 8400 block of Serapis Avenue in the city of Pico Rivera. Around 1:20 am, while the homeowner slept, both intruders tried to break into his residence by breaking a window. The sound of the broken window woke the local homeowner. After, he saw one intruder inside the residence. The homeowner had grabbed a gun beforehand and shot the intruder in the torso. A second intruder was spotted outside in the patio. The

homeowner shot him and the intruder was killed. The homeowner believed that the second intruder was reaching for a weapon. Then, the injured intruder ran to a car with a female driver. The female driver took him to a nearby hospital. Finally, the female driver and the injured intruder were arrested by police officers. Following, it is unknown if the home was specifically chosen for the burglary. The homeowner went into questioning. At the moment, the crime is under investigation. There are no additional details available.

their gender. She believed assuming stereotypes on families was unconstitutional especially after serving Stephen Wisenfeld in court when he realized he couldn’t work less to help his child after his wife died. Ginsburg won that case and proved that regardless of gender everyone is phased with different situations in life that the law should have no control over. Today, Friday September 18, 2020 we lost a hero. A hero that represented the power of education, freedom and most importantly equality. All around the country people mourn the

loss of Ruth Bader Ginsburg but remind one another on the importance of voting and practicing their civil rights. Tonight actress Mindy Kaling tweeted “Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the kind of scholar and patriot you got excited about explaining to your kids. The kind of person who you say “who knows, one day you could be HER”. I hope you rest well, RBG, you must have been tired from changing the world.” The life of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will live on for many years.

asadena encountered a drive by shooting in Villa Parke last Sunday, September 14th. Around 8:45pm Pasadena Resident Nathan Rowe heard peculiar gun shots across from his home. “I just heard real quick five bangs and

then I could hear a girl screaming,” Rowe says. An 18-year-old male had many shots in the upper body and a 14-year-old female shot in the neck. As police arrived, both victims were laying on the grass in critical condition. In the Preliminary investigation, police are still looking for the two suspects in a late-model

Sedan. Lt. Bill Grisafe explains the situation at hand. “The car pulled up alongside the two victims who are on the sidewalk, they asked them something in English”. Grisafe continues, “The victims didn’t understand what they were asking. The passenger got out and began firing rounds at both of them”. Although the victims do not

have any gang affiliations, it is possible that the suspects have gang related ties. While investigators look for a proper description of the suspects, this is one of the many incidents happening in Pasadena. Police responded to a violent stabbing and car-to-car shooting of 20 bullets fired that same weekend. The city and

departments informed residents that an increase of officers will patrol around the area to prevent further violence. Grisafe soon hopes to encounter these suspects and decrease the violence and gang related activities in the future.

he eco-friendly Ventura-based, outdoor brand recently got attention for their cheeky, hidden message that only appears on the tag of a limited pair of shorts, in tiny print. The message: “VOTE THE ASSHOLES OUT.” The label that went viral on Twitter was the latest Trumpera call to action from Patago-

nia. Company’s spokesperson Tessa Byars confirmed that the tags were genuine and “refers to politicians from any party who deny or disregard the climate crisis and ignore science.” Trump’s administration policies have threatened public lands and waters for the last four years. Rising temperatures, diminished snow, and more destructive fires than ever have become the new norm in this climate crisis era. Rose Marcario, the company’s CEO explained, “We all must make it

clear to our elected leaders that there is no room in government for climate deniers and their inaction is killing us.” Patagonia is currently suing the U.S. government to “protect public land and keep fossil fuel-based activities out of national treasures” according to their website. Patagonia is not alone. Many other outdoor recreational retailers have become more politically active over the past few years. Companies have begun to push for state and federal officials to support

greater use of public lands for recreation as opposed to uses like mining, logging, and oil drillings. Burton Snowboards, a Vermont-based outdoor sporting company provides funding to Protect Our Winters, an advocate for climate policies that keep winter sports viable in a warming world. The North Face, another outdoors sporting company, encourages eco-minded travelers to engage in political advocacy by calling on the U.S. government to act

on climate change. Get out and Vote Patagonia has implemented endless voter-friendly initiatives like giving their employees the day off on election day. Their website also features a map where the company recommends certain candidates for their support on things like renewable energy and defending public lands. There are a number of companies like these using their influence to shape the fight for climate change, and the list is only growing.

Homeless encampments reminiscent of those on Skid Row have sprung up in neighboring communities overnight with many residents demanding answers. Once contained to Downtown, homeless people have began setting up camp in whatever city is allowing them to do it. Despite efforts such as Measure H that seek to build housing for the homeless, cities are under pressure from the government to take in a certain number of

homeless people. Some cities in Los Angeles county have reluctantly accepted them such as Monterey Park, South Pasadena, and El Sereno, while others like Alhambra still turn them away when they try to loiter. Multiple encampments which are scattered along Huntington Drive, which runs through the heart of El Sereno, have caused outrage amongst the residents. People are afraid to leave their houses in fear of getting mugged or infected by coronavirus from the people living in their front yards. Children are told they have to play inside because the homeless people are using drugs and having sex in the open and nobody can do anything about it even if they call the cops. Augustine Cabrera, a lifelong

resident of El Sereno responded through text saying, “ In the past 32 years of living in El Sereno I have never seen the homeless population this bad and this prominent, in the middle of a major street that connects two types of economic classes together be so unkept with homelessness. Yes there are current restrictions that are in place because of covid 19, and the lapd can only do so much, but to let violence, drugs, and damage to private property to go ramped in the middle of the street? I think not.“ Due to concerns of COVID-19 spreading in overcrowded jails and prisons, California law enforcement has stopped arresting and housing individuals unless they have committed a federal or

violent crime. This has caused police officers to stop intervening in non violent situations including Homeless related situations. Despite all of this, more funding is going towards homeless services than ever before. Over 355 million in taxpayer dollars a year goes towards the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority but it is hard to determine how much of an impact it truly has. With the Temporary Eviction Moratorium ending Sept. 30, the homeless population may see another sharp rise.

Getting Addicted to an Online Game: Among Us Leslie Lopez A&E Editor

leslie.lopez3339@my.riohondo.edu

A

mong Us is an online sci-fi murder-mystery game created by Innersloth, and the game was released on June 15, 2018. The online game takes place on a spaceship and contains two different teams. A group of crew members, along with an impostor who wants to kill everyone on the spaceship and sabotage the mission. The problem is that the crewmates need to do the tasks while the imposter is trying to blend in with the crewmates. During Sept. 2020, the online game became popular all of a sudden. The game is available either on the PC or mobile, and it's free to use through the mobile. Among Us is a great way to virtually hang out with your friends, meet new people, and play games together. Keep in mind, this is a competition as well. If one would like to win, there are certain rules. Your friends may hate you throughout the game for either killing them or by

completing the mission. Among Us takes place on a spaceship located in outer space. You are a member of the crewmates, trying to make sure that everything runs smoothly on the spaceship. Each crewmate member needs to complete their tasks and the mission will be completed. Of course, there is an issue. There are two teams: the crewmates and the imposters. There could be a total of 10 players and a total of three impostors the maximum. There is an imposter or imposters hidden with the crewmates. Only an imposter knows who the other imposter is if there is more than one. The job of an imposter is to eliminate the crewmates by killing them without being caught or to sabotage the missions. While the imposter(s) are doing that, the crewmates need to figure out who the imposters are. When someone finds a dead body or an emergency meeting is called, the players discuss who could be an imposter. One shares information based on who died, where the

body was found, who reported the dead body, what they saw within their area, who was absent, explaining what tasks they were doing, and if anyone has been acting suspiciously. At some point, the players need to vote based on who could be

the imposter. The player with the majority of the vote will get ejected from the spaceship and will be thrown to outer space. The way how the crewmates win is by voting off the imposter or by completing all of the tasks. For the imposter, they

could win by convening the crewmates on voting off another crewmate and making them think they are an imposter, sabotaging the spaceship successfully, or by killing enough crew members.

etflix and chill have been the definition of the stay-at-home order these past few months. It has been leaving some people feeling a bit agitated and wanting to go outside for some form of entertainment, but trying to get out of the house for a few hours during the pandemic can

be quite stressful. "Am I too close? Are masks required? Can I eat out? These are just some of the many questions we ask ourselves before we head out and start our day. Of course, that does not include our list of precautionary supplies that we need to have with us at all times. With large theatre chains being closed, drive-ins have had a significant increase in their

number of attendees. It's as simple as pulling up to a designated parking space, adjusting your radio frequency to the proper channel, and utilizing the car's speakers for sound. Even though many summer blockbusters have been pushed until 2021, a handful of movie studios decided to put out a few titles. There were movies such as Bill and Ted Face The Music, Tenet, and The New Mutants,

just to name a few. What if you don't feel like watching the shortlist of movies that got released and prefer a different genre? Luckily, many drive-ins are playing a variety of classics ranging in all genres such as Beetlejuice, La-La Land, and Jaws. Some people want some sort of entertainment during COVID and what better way to enjoy them than at your local drive-in movie theatre. All you

have to do is to stay in your vehicle and won't be in contact with others. Local drive-ins, such as Mission Tiki located in Montclair, have taken precautionary measures to ensure that every guest is safe, abiding by strict rules, and following the regulations. Their rules are as follows 1.) You must wear a mask when visiting the bathroom and snack bar. 2.) You must not leave your vehicle except to visit the bathroom or snack bar. 3.) You must view the movie from within your vehicle. 4.) You must practice social distancing at all times. 5.) You must not leave your vehicle when purchasing tickets. 6.) If you do not follow the above guidelines, you will be asked to leave without a refund. 7.) Every car must be parked one car space apart Some large venues, like the Rose Bowl or Brea mall, have started Pop-Up drive-ins. Those venues utilized their space or parking lots so large screens or projectors could be set. If you wish to watch some movies or want to leave your house, grab your family for a night! Also, don't forget to pack some snacks and blankets too!

A

surprising twist in the soccer world as some of our 2019 Women’s World Cup Champs make tough decisions. While the NWSL begin their fall series, five United States Women's National Team players have other plans in mind. Alex Morgan along with Tobin Heath, Christen Press and others have committed to playing in the European League. As COVID-19 has not been in constant control, the U.S. players began to have second thoughts in staying home. The first to move was Center Midfielder Samantha Mewis. At the beginning of August, she transferred from North Carolina Courage to Manchester City. While her former NWSL team took the championship

title in 2018-2019, Manchester City also had their fair share of victories. In 2019, Manchester City came in second place to Chelsea by one point. This year, Manchester City is confident to win the FA Super League with their new addition. Head Coach Gavin Makel says, “Bringing Sam to the club is a huge coup for us…she is a highly technical and extremely athletic midfield player who will help the team push on in what is a new era for the Club.” Following Mewis' footsteps, Midfielder Rose Lavelle will also play for Manchester City. Playing overseas, Lavelle’s rights were acquired to OL Reign in a trade with Washington Spirit. Lavelle’s former NWSL team will be gaining OL Reign’s first round draft pick of 2022. They will also gain $100,000 in allocation money and additional allo-

cation prepared upon Lavelle’s playing status for NWSL. Because of the unsure game schedule from Covid-19, the midfielder immediately signed to play outside of the NWSL. CEO of OL Reign, Bill Predmore accepted the sacrifice to wait for her arrival. “While we would have loved to have Rose join our club today, she fits perfectly into our long-term vision for the squad.” CEO Predmore continues, “…We are willing to…exercise the needed patience and do whatever work is required to realize our goal of bringing Rose to OL reign in the future”. With this in mind, Mewis and Lavelle begin their training with Manchester City for their fall league. As things continue in Man. City, other USWNT players made their appearance in Manchester United. Beginning September,

Outside Winger Tobin Heath and Forward Christen Press have signed to play abroad to the United Kingdom. Former Utah Royals player Christen Press and former Portland Thorns player Tobin Heath are no strangers to the European League. Christen played for Goteborg FC in 2012 and 2018, and for Tyreso 2013-14. Tobin had her short debut with Paris St. Germain in 2013-14. Joining Manchester United for the 2020-21 FA Super League, it is believed that the two players will not return to the NWSL until after the 2021 Summer Olympics. Shortly after Press and Heath’s move, USWNT Forward Alex Morgan decided to play in London for the 2020-2021 season. With Mewis and Lavelle travelling to Manchester City and Press and Heath with Man-

chester United, Morgan took a bold move to transfer from NWSL team Orlando Pride to Tottenham Hotspur FC as a loan player. Although her contract consists of playing for the last four months of the year, Tottenham has given her the option to stay until the season ends in May. Just like the two Man. United newcomers, Morgan has also had her fair share of playing in the European league. Signing with Lyon back in 2016-17, she played for the second half of the season while Lyon took the Champions League title. Although Orlando Pride is expecting her return in March for the NWSL preseason, it is still undefined if her journey will take her back home in March, or continue as a Spur until May.

Rams Ground Eagles 37-19, Advance to 2-0 on Season Samuel Garcia Reporter

T

he visiting Los Angeles Rams defeated the Eagles on the strength of an opportunistic defense and balanced offensive attack. Here’s what we learned from Sunday’s showdown at Lincoln Financial Field:

Welcome to the NFL, Darrell Henderson. Last week against the Dallas Cowboys, it was Malcolm Brown who led the way, rushing for 79 yards and two touchdowns. This week, it was Henderson’s turn. The second year running back for LA had a career game, toting the rock for 81 yards on 12 attempts and a touchdown. He also played a

role in the passing game, hauling in a pair of catches for 40 yards. That last catch, a dime from quarterback Jared Goff, set up Henderson’s touchdown run and iced the game for Los Angeles. When the Rams released former Pro Bowler and 2018 AP Offensive Player of the Year Todd Gurley back in March, fans wondered how the

Photo Courtesy of TodayHeadline.co Rams tight end Tyler Higbee (89) muscles past Eagles cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman to score the game's first touchdown. Higbee scored a career high three receiving touchdowns to lead the Los Angeles Rams to a 37-19 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

running game would look in a post-Gurley world. They can rest assured, as Henderson and fellow backfield mates Malcolm Brown (47 yards rushing) and rookie Cam Akers (who left the game early with a rib injury) have proven capable of holding down the fort. This is a new and improved Rams defense, one that limited the Eagles to only three second half points. Led by first year defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, the Los Angeles defense won the turnover battle, snagging two interceptions from Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz and forcing a Miles Sanders fumble. With the lack of preseason games and limited training camp practices due to COVID-19 concerns, many wondered whether teams around the league would need time to knock off any rust. The Rams, meanwhile, look poised to return to the playoffs after missing the big dance last season. Of course, since the NFL has become a pass-happy league, what would a recap be without mentioning the man behind center. Rams quarterback Jared Goff finished the game with a crisp stat line,

completing 20 of his 27 passes for three TDs. When he has a clean pocket, Goff is as poised as any quarterback around the league; when he gets uncomfortable, he misses high on his throws, especially to open receivers. But that’s the Jared Goff experience Rams fans have grown accustomed to over the last five years. Thankfully for fans, it seems we might see more of the former. This reshuffled offensive line has done well protecting Goff, who was only sacked once the entire game. And here’s another plus: Goff earned his first win against the Carson Wentz led Eagles, having initially gone 0-2 in their previous matchups. According to NFL.com, this is also the first time the Rams have defeated the Eagles since a Week 16 matchup in 2004, when Marc Bulger and Steven Jackson led the then St. Louis Rams to a 20-7 win. Next on the agenda, the Rams will stay on the road and visit the Buffalo Bills. Both teams will look to extend their winning ways and advance to 3-0 on the season. Kickoff will take place September 27 at 1 PM EST.

The win secured a commanding 2-0 series win for the Lakers, leaving them two wins away from their first NBA Finals appearance since the 2010 season. The victory was undoubtedly the team’s most important up to date. After a quick start on the night, the Lakers were able to take take a 60-50 halftime lead and a 16 point lead by the midst of the third quarter. The Lakers looked like they had everything in cruise control, but Denver was able to respond in a huge manner in the third quarter, as they have done throughout the entirety of the first two rounds of the playoffs. As they did against Utah and against the Clippers, the Nuggets were able to erase a large second-half deficit and were able to cut into the once large Lakers lead. Denver took their first lead of the second half at the 7:30 mark in the fourth quarter, but were soon matched by a Danny Green three pointer that put the Lakers up again. Dodgers Clinch Playoff Spot, On Verge of 8th Consecutive National League West Division Title

he Los Angeles Dodgers are closing in yet again on another National League West title. This past week not only did they clinch a playoff spot in their 7-5 win against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, but they set their magic number to only two games with six games left to go. All it would take for the Dodgers to clinch their eighth consecutive division title would be another win on their behalf and one Padres loss in the upcoming final week of the regular season. Entering the final week of the season, the Dodgers are in very good shape, entering this week with a 38-16 record. The team on top of having baseball’s best record will be receiving a big boost this week as starting pitcher Walker Buehler is set to return from the Injured List this week to start

one game in before the playoffs begin on the 29th. According to Manager Dave Roberts, the plan is to have him potentially start Thursday aaginst the Oakland Athletics in order to have him ready for the upcoming Wild Card best of three series. Amongst the Dodger lineup, Mookie Betts and Corey Seager have led the offensive attack all season with Chris Taylor and others catching fire recently. Betts is amongst one of the favorites to win National League MVP along with other names like Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman. With one week left it would likely mean manager Dave Roberts will rest key players down the stretch in preparation for the upcoming playoffs. In regards to the playoff situation though, things will be different this year with 1-8 seeds in both the NL and AL, similar to the NBA playoff bracket style.

Photo Courtesy Tasy of Pixabay.com The Dodgers are set to face the Oakland A's and the Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem from Dodger Stadium to finsih off the year. Only one win and one Padres loss would secure the Division Title, but more importantly, would clinch home field advantage for the Wild card round which begins on the 29th. The Giants, Brewers, Reds, and Phillies are all competing to see who would take the 8th seed this year and face the Dodgers in MLB's new 2020 playoff format.

Are We Doing Enough? The World’s Mental Health

Justin Fuentes for El Paisano

This Illustrations style and overall theme showcases the overall message of how dark and messy anyones mental health can get, it eats up a person and its borderline not the greatest feeling and its a reality check to the world that we need to do something about it. STEPHINIE PHAN Opinion Editor

stephinie.phan4180@my.riohondo.edu

A

s some may know September is Suicide Prevention Month and with the pandemic, it's tested more than just our physical health, there's a strain on mental health more than ever. With how society is there's a stigma for it, one that shouldn’t be placed. Some are told it’s a means for attention or everyone goes through it and sometimes even suck it up. We even place professionals in the entertainment business or influencers on such a high pedestal that we forget they’re human and that they have feelings just like everyone else. Or even the fact of your someone who can’t be feeling sad or upset because it just doesn’t happen, sound familiar? We as humans need to understand that this is enough and mental health is real and should be looked upon, not as a nuisance or a disease, but a cry for help. The world needs to put mental health on its list of importance as if air, food, and water are to live. We should have more government funding or more options for mental

health care for everyone. With how society is nowadays mental health is kind of a term where people would use it as a joke or a complaint. The word is now normalized and it's at the point where everyone is affected by it practically it's an everyday experience. That mindset isn’t healthy, it never should have been okay or rationalized to a norm and honestly, Gen Z has made more of an effort to have care options, but it’s not open to everyone and certainly not enough for people to simply pay to have therapy sessions, not everyone has that kind of cash. Gen Z is also unfortunately the same generation that made social media the platforms that they are. With Instagram being how many followers and likes can you get and tik tok of being whos number one and brand deals it can take a toll. Not only for the average everyday person but as well as our influencers. Tik Tok is a huge example of poor mental health where teenagers 13 and 14-year-olds are making a living by posting

five seconds to one-minute videos. Sounds harmless, but there are catches you need to have quotas and make several posts a day as well as keeping and climbing the ranks of best Tik Tokers. And for teenagers, this is a popularity contest at an age where they are trying to find themselves. That's dangerous because if the world says they don’t like a trend or something they tend to be kinda nasty and for the world to attack a teenager that's a lot of mental stress because to them they are done. Even the existence of the hype house, I believe it shouldn’t be a thing, a bunch of unstable teens under one roof feeding their audience content is hard to even for an adult. Having a young individual under the constant eye of the world is pressure and it's now kind of a clickbait or people reupload a person and drag them. This is normal on drama channels even news and other social media platforms would cover these people letting even more people seeing this unfold and this is crazy. We even have our actors and singers and people

in the entertainment business even sports with this issue. Kpop is making big moves in the world and with how popular it's getting and how big the fandom is growing so is the pressure. Now there is a startup of mental support for Kpop artists after a series of beloved members committing suicide from their reasons and companies trying to hide this news because this harms them their profit and image. Same with our actors and other cultured singers we make them our gods and role models. That's a way of life, but when they are sad or something is wrong we shun them or put more unneeded pressure. We as fans forget they are human and we’re so focused on the persona they put up and all we want is the drama or the next drop or even their whole lives and that's also not okay. We keep telling them they can’t be sad they aren’t allowed to be human if they make a mistake then what are we doing. Now some professionals admit yes they struggle with depression and such and some people can’t understand or even accept that. So it doesn’t matter if

they are professionals, influencers, entertainers, or the average human being, mental health is something we all deal with and it shouldn’t be frowned upon and thrown in other people's faces. We should have more help and support and more options for mental health. It's not enough for everyone to know it's a thing. Mental Health is important because everyone has it and that's okay.

T

he Trump administration wanted TikTok, a social network app, to be banned from downloading on Sunday, September 20th. Users who had the app downloaded on their phone already would still be able to use it except, there wouldn’t be any updates. Any other individuals who wanted to download the app would be restricted from doing so. Before, President Donald Trump had signed two executive orders to ban the app, owned by Chinese company called ByteDance, because it violated the privacy of users in the US. The popular app had to be sold in order for US users to continue using it. At first, Microsoft offered to buy the app, but ByteDance declined it. Now, a deal has been approved by President Trump,

with Oracle and Walmart to buy TikTok. The approved deal postponed the ban that was scheduled for September 20th. When the deal is sealed, Oracle will take 12.5% stake, while Walmart will have 7.5%. TikTok will have a new name, knowwwwn as TikTok Global. Although, the ByteDance still has to approve of the deal. According to the Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, the ban on downloading TikTok would be pushed to another date, September 27th. An executive order was issued on August 14th for TikTok to be sold to the US by November 12th. If it is not sold by that date, then there will be more restrictions on the app.
