DISNEY GETS APPROVAL FOR EXPANSION
WENDY GARCIA @wendyjour110During a late night city council meeting on April 16, the Anaheim council voted in favor of a Disney expansion plan.
This vote pushes Disney plans for expansion further down the approval process.
The first city council meeting held a vote of 7-0 approval in favor of the proposed expansion on the property Disney already owns. The next city council meeting will be held in May and this meeting will be more so for formality to solidify the approval. This final approval from the city of Anaheim would allow Disney to continue crafting their plans for the future expansion of their parks. This expansion will generate more economic growth and revenue for the city of Anaheim, since Disneyland is a major tourist attraction for the city.
Disney will also profit from this expansion and it will further establish Walt Disney’s legacy. Disney has
said, “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.”
The plans for this proposed project are intricate and will not be complete for another 40 years. Disney has been teasing this project under the name, DisneyForward, to its many followers and supporters.
The plans for the expansion of the amusement
park will be massive and will require lots of creativity from Disney’s imagineers.
One of the proposed ideas will be the repurposing of different pieces of property surrounding the Disney parks. The repurposing of property will allow for more space to create new attractions, shops, and restaurants.
There are many ways that Disney can create a unique
experience that has not been seen in the parks here in California or Florida. There are several different movie installations that Disney can bring to those repurposed areas to create an even greater experience for park visitors. However not all the residents are as enthusiastic about this project due to one of the proposed ideas regarding the street “Magic Way”. Disney
is hoping to purchase this street from the city of Anaheim to assume control responsibility over the street. A city council attendee and Anaheim resident Cassandra Taylor showed their disapproval of this change, “It will be theirs and theirs entirely. Voters will have no say in its future use.”
Many residents have concerns about this street as they worry about the potential for more traffic congestion on this street and others surrounding them. For now, Disney is keeping their plans for the expansion under tight wraps leaving park visitors and Anaheim residents in suspense. However what is known at this time is the multi-decade timeframe. There won’t be any major construction (except for the ones already in motion) or changes to the property as of yet and will likely not begin for another couple of years.
As for now, park enthusiasts will have to play the waiting game and wait on Disney for updates and details.
SIGHTS TO SEE AT SAFARI PARK EVERYTHING MUST GO
BRANDON NEVAREZ
@brandon_journ1
As a college student, I need to get away sometimes. What better place than San Diego on a budget? I stayed at Wyndham by Worldmark, which has beautiful amenities and security that watches your car.
As for sights to see, we went to a few in our short trip. I recommend going to Coronado Beach and eating at Caza Azul. Delicious food at reasonable prices.
On Coronado Beach, there are lots of things to do, such as sunset sailing, morning yoga, dog beach, and even biking the coastline.
The main aspects of our trip were the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. The San Diego zoo was absolutely beautiful. As a college student, we were able to get 10% off our tickets. We began our day with a tour of the entire park with a very knowledgeable tour guide. We visited every animal they had, including komodo dragons, red pandas, koalas, and baboons.
My favorite animal had to be the giraffe because I was able to feed one and
actually got stalked by one during our behind the scenes tour at the safari park.
The safari park was honestly worth seeing the next day. I learned lots of fun facts as well as being able to visit the limited time
‘Butterfly Jungle’. This is a limited time event where you get to see dozens of different patterned butterflies that only occur in the springtime.
This safari park is home to the only platypus outside of Australia, they have 1 boy and 1 girl, and they are beautiful.
My favorite fact to learn was the impact the safari park has
had on the Indian rhinoceros species. In 2015, there were only about 9 ‘one horned rhinos’.
The zoos had to work with princes from Nepal (who had the rhinos as pets) to save the species. The San Diego Safari has single handedly reproduced 98 rhinos, and there are now about 4200 in the world.
The rhinos themselves are absolutely beautiful and intriguing animals to observe. So next time you are in San Diego, I definitely recommend going to see these amazing animals.
99 Cents Only Discount Stores announce franchise shut downOMAR LOPEZ @oflix_03
One of the most reliable and heavily praised stores will soon meet its end. The famous “99 Cent Store” establishments are soon to be closing and are reaching their final days of sales.
With sales being made of a dollar or more the company itself is unable to keep up with the constant increase in economy. WIth their whole brand being “99 cents” they tend to fall behind on sales due to its light price and budget friendly items for sale. Even so, this franchise has managed to stand tall and make sales for many years. Until now.
Not only will this be a loss for financial owners of each store but the communities that relied on these stores for supplies. “I remember going to the 99 cent store with my mom on weekends. Sometimes, if
I was good, I was able to get about 3 toys,” Alex Garcia, Whittier resident, said. The amount of people who have fond memories of this magical place that offers supplies and a variety of household items will always be in the community’s heart. A variety of people have been seen heading to their local 99 cent stores to show their appreciation and support for one of the last times possible. Even some employees of these establishments feel for their workspace being shut down.
“I think what I will miss the most is being able to interact with the people in my community. I see familiar faces all the time- this store is definitely one for the community,” Erick Smith, 99 cent store cashier, said.

SPRING IS HERE AND SO ARE THE BEES
KASSANDRA GUILLEN
@kassandraguillen01
We’re now in Spring which calls for immense changes within the weather forecast.
With the weather warming up and spring flowers blooming once again we can expect to welcome back honeybees. The spring season is the busiest time of the year for honeybees, not only do they reproduce during the Spring but they also find the most quantity of pollen and nectar to collect for their colony.
The queen bee is the one in charge, she finds a safe nesting spot meanwhile the other bees all have different tasks to take care of. According to an article posted on Sioux Honey during the Spring, queen bees reproduce the
most amount of eggs which end up becoming worker bees that help find food for their colonies. By accumulating the resources they need honey bees are able to produce honey. Although some might complain about the increased population of honey bees, it’s important to remember how beneficial honey bees are for the environment and for our ecosystem.
By allowing them to do their job we are helping our planet more than we know. As the weather gets warmer and warmer there will be so many fun activities to do outdoors but it’s important to keep in mind to not interfere with where the honeybees will be.
Not only will this keep everyone safe but them as well.
WAYS TO BE ECO-FRIENDLY WHEN SPRINGING INTO EARTH MONTH
to remember that even small changes can go a long way.
We are now in April which is one of the most important months of the year. April is considered Earth Month and April 22nd is Earth Day.
This month helps bring awareness to take drastic measures to help our planet
There are so many things that a lot of people are unaware of that hurt our planet for example, plastic waste, deforestation, air pollution, disposal of waste and many more things.
This month is a reminder of taking action to make a change, whether that be taking big steps or small steps. It’s important
SPRING IS THE SEASON OF SICKNESS
KASSANDRA GUILLEN
@kassandraguillen01
Now that Spring is here
it’s important to make sure we do everything to prevent spring diseases. With the weather getting warmer and flowers blooming there are different types of sicknesses that eventually come around.
One of the most popular
being seasonal allergies, this is caused due to trees, grass pollen, and weed pollen. Air pollution can cause many types of sicknesses but allergies wins by a long haul.
Another common spring illness is asthma, this is caused due to pollen and specific types of molds which leads to the struggle of properly breathing.
According to an article
released by Teladoc Health there are many more common spring illnesses like lyme disease, respiratory viruses, and pink eye.
With that being said, here are a few ways to avoid spring diseases from entering your household. For starters, keeping windows and sliding doors closed during the day helps prevent pollen
There are many different ways to take action during this month. For starters, just planting a tree can help bring awareness as well as participation in Earth month. By taking public transportation as well as riding a bike can help save energy consumption and gas emission not only that but it helps our rivers to be less contaminated
Using reusable water bottles helps our environment immensely, reducing the use of plastic helps not contaminate soil as well as affect wildlife animals.
Planting native plants is a drastic improvement for yards, these plants help reduce water
from entering your home
Pollen levels are at an all time high during the spring, it’s necessary to take extra precaution and do whatever is in your capability to prevent any type of pollen and air pollutants from entering your household.
The easiest way to prevent any type of sickness is with medication.
Perhaps a doctor can prescribe you medication or you can purchase allergy medication that’s over the counter. By taking medicine every few hours it’ll help you from getting worse or even hitting your system.
as well as need less fertilization compared to other plants.
These plants are very welcoming to animals which helps support biodiversity drastically. Last but not least recycling is one of the easiest things we can do to help our planet and environment.
Even if that means having a recycling trash can outside or figuring out where the closest recycling center is by collecting plastic and recycling you’re making the world a much better place. These are all helpful tips that were shared by the Nation Forrest Foundation. It’s important to get involved an dtake action to be able to help our planet one step at a time.
Changing clothing once you step foot inside your home is another smart way of preventing spring illnesses. Putting your contaminated dirty clothes in the laundry instead of wearing it will go a long way in benefiting you Overall the spring is such a beautiful time of the year. So many flowers are blooming, trees are growing, insects are coming out once again. It’s important to take measures into your own hands in order to protect your immune system and health during the most pollinated time of the year.
ALEJANDRA’S JOURNEY FROM CALCULUS TO TUTORING AT RIOHONDO COLLEGE
MATTHEW GARCIA@mattg05er
In the bustling Learning Resource Center (LRC) at Rio Hondo College, one tutor stands out for her dedication and distinctive approach to teaching: Alejandra.
A recent college graduate, Alejandra has become an essential part of the educational fabric at Rio, guiding students through the notoriously challenging waters of mathematics.
Alejandra’s journey into tutoring began in a calculus class where a peer, recognizing her aptitude and patience, suggested she apply for a tutoring position. After a successful interview, Alejandra quickly made her mark at the LRC.
Unlike traditional methods that often emphasize shortcuts, Alejandra insists on teaching the foundational steps of mathematical problems. This
approach not only enhances comprehension but also equips students with the skills to tackle related subjects effectively. Her philosophy is simple yet profound: “Mathematics often has a bad reputation for being difficult, but by understanding each step, students can truly master the concepts and apply them across various topics.”
This thoroughness has brought her great satisfaction, especially when students return with news of their academic achievements a testament to her impact.
Alejandra’s commitment extends beyond individual success; she values her team at the LRC.
Whenever she encounters a challenging teaching moment, her colleagues are her go-to resource for alternative solutions.
Observing and collaborating with other tutors has broadened her
instructional repertoire, enhancing her ability to meet diverse student needs.
Despite the joys of tutoring, Alejandra is candid about the challenges. She often meets students with unrealistic expectations, hoping for immediate improvements in their grades without putting in the necessary work.
To them, she advises, “We’re just a link. Real improvement requires effort beyond our sessions.” As popular as she is evidenced by students who book sessions with her days in advance — Alejandra finds the personal growth she’s experienced to be the most rewarding aspect of her job.
Working at the LRC while attending a four-year university honed her study habits, a discipline she credits for her academic success. “This job isn’t just about helping others,” she reflects, “it’s also about growing alongside them.”
Looking to the future, Alejandra is ready for new challenges. With aspirations to become a data analyst, she is keen on finding patterns that solve real-world problems, ideally within a federal agency.
Yet, her advice to students remains steadfast: take full advantage of the tutoring services at Rio Hondo. Explaining how It’s free, inclusive, and designed to challenge and support you. “Making the effort to show up puts you a step ahead,” she encourages. As Alejandra prepares to transition from tutor to data analyst, her time at the LRC is secure marked by a deep commitment to student success and a personal transformation that will fuel her career for years to come. Her story is a powerful reminder of how much can be achieved with dedication, both in teaching and learning.
SCOTT DIXON WINS USING FUEL SAVING STRATEGY
ROBERT JIMENEZ @jimenez__robert
LONG BEACH, Calif. -Scott Dixon won the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach with fuel saving strategy. Moving closer to the top of the all time win list with his 57th victory. Closing the 10 win gap between him and A.J. Foyt. Dixon said “Some years you could knock out five, six or seven [wins]. But If it’s a good year, you can possibly get four or five.”
After the race, Colton Herta and Alex Palou were amazed
by Dixon’s ability to stretch his fuel for almost 50 of the 85 laps.
Of the 50 fuel saving laps 42 of those were leading laps. Defending the lead on one of the most prestigious courses in the United States.
Team Penske’s drive Josef Newgarden chased down Dixon over the last 20 laps. Newgarden then lost his positioning when Colton Herta ran into the back of him, dropping him to fourth place behind Herta and Paulo.
“He just stopped in the
middle of the corner,” Herta complained of Newgarden Newgarden then finished the race in fourth. He questioned why Herta was not penalized for the incident.
“I’m not sure how lifting someone two feet in the air isn’t a penalty.” said Newgarden, who wasn’t sure he’d have been able to catch Dixon. “That seems pretty black and white to me, but I’d ask the question to everybody else If it were reverse, I’d expect to be penalized.”
Palou finished third,
making it a Honda sweep in a race sponsored by its Acura brand. Newgarden was the closest Chevrolet driver in fourth place. Wrapping up the weekend, Scott Dixon,Colton Herta, and Alex Palou all lead in the Indy Series.
UPNEXT: Indycar is now heading to Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama where Scott Mclaughlin is the defending champ.
ROADUNNERS COMPETE AGAINST THE MT. SAC MOUNTIES
ENRIQUE RIVAS
@erijour74
At “The Jungle”, Roadrunners (9-25) fell into a devastating defeat against Mt. San Antonio College Mounties (21-12) with a final score of 25-7 Monties win on Apr 11th. Starter Nolan Troxel went 1 innings pitched giving up 3 earned runs and 2 walks which give the Mounties a 2 -run home run and an RBI
double. In the 2nd inning, Roadrunner righty Brad Hochberger gave up 8 earned runs and 2 walks which gave the Mounties 9 runs in one inning. In which the game was a blowout, the Roadrunner offense ended up attempting to get runs on the board. Michael Salcedo went 1 for 3 with a single, 2 walks and 1 run. Logan Mikel went 1-4 with a single
and 2 runs scored. A fielder’s choice RBI from Ryan Duron also put runs on. Aaron Torres went 3-3 with 2 singles, triple with 2 RBIs as well. The offense put a lot of groundouts to let other base runners advance to score in sort of try to put the ball in play, but didn’t turn out successful from the plan. With defense and pitching, pitching
command was the big issue on the Apr 11 loss, pitcher’s command was all over the place in the strike zone for the Mounties figuring out quickly what the Roadrunners pitchers were throwing and scoring a lot in the early. It’s uncertain if any of them were tipping pitches. The pitchers from the 5th,6th, inning quickly
executed the Mounties to stop scoring in those innings until the 7th and the 9th inning. The Roadrunners will play again their final game against the Mounties on Apr 12 to try to avoid the sweep and play 3 of the 2 series against East Los Angeles Huskies and Compton College Tartars for 2 weeks until the end of April
WOMEN’S BEACH VOLLEYBALL FALL SHORT AT ROSIE’S DOG BEACH
ENRIQUE RIVAS
@erijour74
Playing at Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach, the Roadrunners (12-7 overall, 10-4 neutral) played a strong and close 2v2 match against Long Beach City Vikings (13-4 overall, 4-1 neutral) as they fell short with a 3-2 loss on Apr 5th.
With offense, Maria Bejines makes a powerful and fast spike that takes their impressive offense score by a landslide alongside with her teammate Maleia Petterez with stellar communication and perfect setting which gives Bejines the perfect time to spike.
Jennifer Reynoso played her heart out with stellar strategies that the Vikings could not see coming, for example the Vikings positioned far back which allowed Navarro’s teammate Isabel Villavicencio to hit the ball over and close to the net which gave Vikings no chance to save it.
In volleyball, team chemistry is the most beneficial factor to a match. Defense
highlights will go to Carly Kejmar making impressives saves looking up behind her back that makes spectators and Roadrunners be so amazed by including her court coverage to try to keep the game going.
That also includes Loren Foster and Herlinda Casanova to win their 2v2 of the matches in their games to put the Roadrunners on the board.
Jade Fuentes and Jaida Zuniga had amazing defense to call for it and communication was also stellar to go passive, but when the right time starts, they strike back.
Roadrunners played with heart and tenacity and always went for great strategies to stay alive in the game but ended up falling short to a victory Roadrunners close out the South Coast Conference.
On Apr 12, they will play two matches at home against Cerritos College and College of the Desert at Rosie’s Dog Beach at 10 a.m. to prepare for the South Coast Conference Pairs Tournament on Friday, Apr 19.
