Biggest NFL Offseason Trades and Signings 2022 Matthew Medina

halil Mack is moving to LA after the Bears traded him for a 2022 second-round pick and a 2023 sixth-round pick in the draft. Coming off his third season with Chicago, Mack marked only one double digit sack total in his first year with the team. The defensive line in Los Angeles will be hard to handle with the addition of Mack because he will now join four-time Pro Bowler Joey Bosa in the Chargers organization. The NFL Offseason is in full swing for the 2022 season and some teams have already made big moves to improve their roster before the NFL Draft in April. While small deals were made earlier this offseason, some of the biggest names stole the headlines this past week. The biggest story to come out this week was a blockbuster trade between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks that involved ten year veteran Russell Wilson moving to Denver. After all the rumors and speculation that Aaron Rodgers would be signing with Denver, the Broncos picked up the next best thing in Seattle after Rodgers re-signed with Green Bay. The trade package sent to the Seahawks included quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a fifth round pick in the draft for Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson and a 2022 fourth round
pick in the NFL draft. With the addition of Wilson, the Broncos are expected to have a loaded roster in 2022. Wide receivers Courtland Sutton, Jerry Judy, Tim Patrick and Jervonte Williams are dangerous weapons for Wilson to target. Overshadowed by the Wilson news, Aaron Rodgers reportedly signed a 4-year $200 million deal back to Green Bay making him the highest paid player in the history of the NFL. TWhis report was confirmed to be false from Aaron Rodgers himself. He will have a much more team friendly contract due to wide receiver Devante Adams' franchise tag given to him earlier this week. If the Packers did offer that huge contract to Rodgers, they cannot offer Adams a long term deal because they will be over the salary cap/luxury tax. Although Rodgers is the highest paid quarterback, Adams is determined to be the highest paid receiver in the NFL. Adam's went onto social media Monday morning saying he will not play under the franchise tag put on him and that the two sides remain "far apart" in a new contract. The Indianapolis Colts are trading quarterback Carson Wentz to the newly renamed Washington Commanders for multiple draft picks for the 2022 and 2023 draft. Originally, Washington offered a massive haul of first round picks to the Seahawks for Wilson, but ༡ Continues on pg.7

Kanye Fumes Over Kim and Pete's Relationship

he new couple, Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson, have made their relationship publicly official on Kardashian’s instagram account Mar. 11. Kardashian posted a picture of her and Davidson lying close together on the floor and then a blurry selfie of them together along with a series of other photos in her post. Kardashian and Davidson were first seen together in Oct. 2021 on SNL. The two were in a skit together playing
as princess Jasmine and Aladdin exchanging a kiss which broke the internet. From then on the couple have been seen privately hanging out together from time to time. The news was announced late 2021 that they were officially a couple and then publicly shared it on Kardashians instagram account. “They were smiling and laughing a lot and seemed genuinely affectionate with each other,” an eyewitness told Page Six. All smiles and laughter were put on hold when drama rose between the new couple
Graphic by Madeline Torres for El Paisano Media Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian are the newest couple and many people are shocked and happy for the couple. West has took to social media multiple times sharing his anger and dislike towards the couple, especially Davidson. It's an on going feud that only seems to get worse.
and ex husband, Kanye West. West took all his thoughts to social media and tried to stir the pot between the new couple. In case you're a little behind on this love triangle, here's the details on what has happened so far. Back in 2020, while West was giving a rally in South Carolina because he was running for president, the rapper exposed the Kardashians saying personal information about the family. This clearly left the family upset by West’s words. After that incident, the celeb took to twitter sending out multiple tweets about how Kardashian is trying to “lock him up” and that he is unhappy with his marriage with her. After that, Kardashian also goes on social media to respond to all the hate that was being thrown at West. She opens up sharing that West suffers from a bi polar disorder and that everyone should be more considerate and empathetic to the rapper. A year later, news broke out that Kardashian had filed a divorce. “After turning 40 this year, I realized like, ‘No, I don’t want a husband that lives in a completely different state,’” she continued. “To me, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, that’s when we’re getting along the best,’ but then that is sad to me and that’s not what I want. I want someone that we have the same shows in common. I want someone who wants to work out with me.” Kardashian says in the two-part
series finale of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. When Kardashian made her appearance on SNL she opened up the show making jokes about her divorce while also thanking him and expressing how thankful she was to have him in her life. That was also the same episode Kardashian and Davidson performed their skit together. The rumors were starting to go around and West was not having it. “That ain’t no joke to me. My kids want their parents to stay together. I want…us to be together.” West tells on the Drink Champs podcast that he wants Kardashian to be his wife again. Since announcing the couple’s new relationship, West has been on a mission doing whatever he can to get Kardashian back into his life. He’s gone to extremes when he shared that he moved into a home that was close to Kardashian. This is just the beginning to West adding more to the mix. In January 2022, West was reported dating actress Julia Fox. Then the rapper releases his new song “Eazy” which disses Davidson throughout the song. “God saved me from that crash just so I can beat Pete Davidson's ass,” West raps. When West released his song this was also around the same time when he spoke out saying he was not allowed to enter Kardashian’s home without permission. The day
of Chicago’s fourth birthday, West went live on instagram publicly wishing his daughter a happy birthday and then claiming that he wasn’t given the address to her birthday party. Eventually, he was able to attend and publicly thanked Travis Scott for giving him the address. The day of the superbowl, West verbally expresses how much he dislikes Davidson’s and his ex wife's relationship. A day after, West and Fox separate. During this time, Kardashian went to court to request to be declared as single. "I ask that the court restore me to the status of a single person so that I can begin the healing process and so that our family can begin the healing process and move forward in this new chapter in our lives.” Kardashian says. Davidson has also had enough about the slander being thrown at him and sent messages to West asking to leave him and Kardashian alone. 'This isn't public dude. I'm not here for pictures and press. Which is obviously all you care about,' Pete continued. 'My offer stands. I wish you'd man up for once in your life.' Pete says in the back and forth messaging. Meanwhile, Kardashian is trying to move on from her past marriage with West and is working on focusing more on herself and her new relationship with Davidson.

Endurance Shipwreck Endured the Antarctic Afterall
Graphic by Jonathon Carmona for El Paisano Media The Endurance and The Aurora ships set out for their expeditions to traverse Antarctica around June 1914. he term “endurance” is defined as; the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way. Endurance is what 27 men showed back in 1915 and today their story has been rediscovered. This past week, the lost ship, Endurance, was found off the coast of Antarctica in the Weddell Sea. The ship belonged to British explorer Ernest Shackleton. 106 years after the ship lost its battle to the ice, explor-
ers found the ship remarkably intact. The vessel was spotted 9,842 ft. deep into the sea, the name still prominent across the stern. In June of 1914, around the time WWI began, Ernest Shackleton and 27 men began their journeys to Antarctica. The plan was to use two ships, The Aurora and The Endurance, and arrive in two different locations. The boats would then traverse Antarctica following two routes and sledge across the ice. It was in January 1915 when Endurance became trapped in ice. The men aboard would live on the boat for
months enduring the freezing temperatures. On Oct. 27, 1915, Shackleton ordered his men to abandon ship as the pressure from the ice started to crush the boat. All crew members gathered only up to two pounds of luggage each and began their tale of survival. Endurance sank Nov. 21, 1915, forever lost to the Weddell Sea. All hope to traverse Antarctica was lost as well. The expedition became a mission of survival for the crew. This mission lasted until Aug. 1916 when all men were rescued. The crew spent about 10 months surviving on the ice. Fortunately, ev-
eryone aboard The Endurance survived. However, The Aurora had also become stuck in ice. The men aboard Aurora were rescued in 1917, three members unfortunately did not survive that expedition. The expedition that took place this year to find Endurance set sail Feb. 5. Expedition leader John Shears and crew set sail from Cape Town, South Africa. Utilizing sonar and submersible crafts, the crew found Endurance just four miles off from where Capt. Frank Worsley had last noted the ship’s location to be. Capt. Frank Worsley was also the one to navigate the
rescue mission for the Endurance crew members. Members of the Endurance22 Expedition were astonished to see the ship in such great condition. Some of the paint is even still intact, a testament to the craftsmanship of the past. The polar waters have preserved the ship’s beauty for 106 years and will continue to do so. After learning all that they can from the discovery, Endurance will be left to endure. The ship will stay put and remain undisturbed as it is protected as a historical site and monument under the Antarctic Treaty.

Turning Red Review: Embracing Growth John Edeson Sayoc Photo Editor

T
he movie, “Turning Red” is a Disney Pixar movie that was recently released on Disney Plus and the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on March 4, 2022. A Fun Set of Characters The main character of this movie is a thirteen year old girl named Meilin (played by Rosalie Chang) who turns into a red panda when faced with a lot of emotions. The first time she turned into a red panda was when her mom, Ming (played by Sandra Oh) embarrassed her in public. Her parents knew that this day was going to happen as this was a family generation thing passed down from generation to generation for girls that started with Meilin’s great grandmother. Along with her friends, she wants to go a household, Rachael deals with high amounts of pressure from her mother. She even explains how her mother can be doubtful about her abilities sometimes. “When she says, ‘what if you get into Stanford?’ she’s really saying, ‘I’m not expecting you to but what if,’” says Rachael. This is a recurring theme throughout the film. Every other student faces high expectations from parents and seeing this huge level of pressure that the students of Lowell have to endure is sad. Not only does the film do a good job of making the audience feel for their admission failures but adding other pressures on top of that makes for a truly gut-wrenching expe-
concert that features her favorite band, 4* Town, but on top of her mom not allowing her, she is set to do a ritual that will help stop you from turning into a red panda. Her friends and her dad, Jin (played by Orion Lee) help her embrace the red panda. The only problem with this is that the dad didn’t have a clear opinion about the red panda until basically the end of the movie. The Constant Evolution of Animation In terms of animation, the movie “Turning Red” hits it out of the park in that department. There were several scenes in this movie that left me impressed. Two scenes for me really stick out in terms of animation and presentation. The first scene was where Meilin’s dad, Jin was making dinner. The detail in that scene was simply the perfect example of the evolution of animation. The second scene involved the boy
band, 4* Town’s concert and the beginning concert with the countdown and the band flying. Throughout the whole movie, the animation was really good, but those scenes were the best. The Main Idea The main Idea of this movie is to embrace change, no matter how scary the situation is. This is shown as while there are people who might find this change scary and unlikeable. Those people might come around, and for the people that accept you (as well as you accept you), they will help you grow. My Overall Opinion This movie was good, but I’m not sure if it was great. The pacing of the movie was better than the Disney movies of last year, the story was clear, the animation was amazing, but I can’t shake the feeling that it is going to be a movie best watched once and forgotten. “Turning Red” is a fun movie to watch with the family and it had a really good message, but it might just not be for me. I would give this movie a 3.5/5.

irected by Debbie Lum, “Try Harder!” is a documentary film that follows a group of high school students struggling with the college admissions process. The film centers around Lowell High School, the number one ranked public high school in San Francisco, Calif, and a student body of mostly Asian Americans. There are certain students the film focuses on that give the audience key insight to the hardships that students at Lowell face: Ian, Sophia, Rachael, Shea, and Alvan. Each one of these individuals offers great insight on their experience with applying to college. Most notably Ivy League colleges and the difficulty of admission that they represent.
Ian is the type of student that is dead set on being the best of the best. Early on, he mentions that he will work harder than anyone to be better than them. After meeting with a counselor this is put to the test when he realizes that some of his peers are putting in even higher quality levels of work than he is. Sophia is a very involved student, with captain of the tennis team, and editor of the school newspaper being just a couple of her extracurricular activities. She comes off as a hard-working student who is determined to be accepted to all of the colleges she applies to. Shea and Alvan deal with rejection from the schools of their choice as well, but audiences will feel more for Shea because of the particular situation he has to deal with. By the way, Shea has one of the most heartwarming moments in the film. One that will make viewers very happy. Rachael may honestly be the real star of the film. This is because her experience has the best development out of all the others. Raised in a single parent
rience that just keeps twisting the knife. Speaking of the parents, the addition of their perspective gives more context about their high expectations. Without their side of the story, it’s easy for audience members to dislike them, but after hearing their reasoning, those high expectations become more understandable. Still, they’re not warranted. A documentary with great direction, solid editing, and deep, personal stories, “Try Harder!” does an excellent job of depicting the trials and tribulations that high school students go through when applying to the school of their dreams.

our of the most important and influential Mexican-American and Latinx movies came out in the 1980s. The movies “Zoot Suit,” “La Bamba,” “Stand and Deliver,” and “Born in East L.A.” captured life in the San Fernando Valley and the rest of Greater Los Angeles, Calif. The 1980s especially witnessed the rise of movies that explored the Mexican-American and Latinx experience. And in some cases, they explore what happened in the decades before. Currently, three of those four movies are part of the National Film Registry. As of now, the only exception is “Born in East L.A.” Mexican-American movies are also commonly known as Chicano movies. Regardless, the films of the 1980s most adequately captured both Chicanx and Mexican-American life in the 1980s and the Pachuco experience during the 1940s. Zoot Suit (1981) The first Mexican-American movie released in the 1980s was “Zoot Suit.” The musical drama came out in 1981. Luis Valdez wrote and directed “Zoot Suit.” Later in the decade, he also directed another popular Mexican-American movie. Edward James Olmos and Daniel Valdez starred in “Zoot Suit.” In the movie, Olmos plays a pale, frail-looking Pachuco whose name is, quite literally, El Pachuco. Daniel Valdez, who is Luis Valdez's brother, plays Henry Reyna. As narrator, Olmos spends the entire movie following the real-life events and people affected by the Sleepy Lagoon murder, the subsequent trial, and the Zoot Suit riots in the early 1940s. The musical “Zoot Suit” is set in and around East Los

ican movie that started off the decade. Olmos and Phillips brought their talents and fame together to tell a real-life story about the discrimination and ultimate success of Latinx high school students in East Los Angeles in 1984. In “Stand and Deliver,” Olmos plays the real-life, Bolivian-born Garfield High School teacher Jaime Escalante. Phillips takes on a crucial supporting role as Angel Guzman. In addition, Rosanna DeSoto, who portrays Ritchie Valens’ mother in “La Bamba,” plays Escalante’s wife in “Stand and Deliver.” During the late 1960s, Garfield High School was one of the schools that Chicanx and Mexican-American students walked out from in protest. Olmos later directed the 2006 movie “Walkout.” The movie is about the East Los Angeles Walkouts.

Although, it’s funny to look back and think that the first mainstream 1980s movie about Mexican-Americans was a musical. But it’s actually an excellent musical. The soundtrack aids the story. The catchy and emotional songs add to the story’s pathos while avoiding being the primary way the story is told. More movies made their way into the theaters and driveins over the next few years. In between, Olmos appeared in a couple of movies, including “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez” and “Blade Runner.” Converse-
ly, in comedy, Cheech Marin, who often appeared on screen in Pachuco attire, and Tommy Chong continued to release more classic stoner films. La Bamba and Born in East L.A. (1987) Then, in Jan. 1987, the popularity of Mexican-American movies shifted with “La Bamba.” A young up-and-coming Lou Diamond Phillips portrayed Ritchie Valens. In the 2000s, Phillips later appeared in the TV series “Geroge Lopez.” “La Bamba,” notably, was also directed and written by

Luis Valdez. His brother, Daniel Valdez, also appears in the film. The same year, Marin strayed away from his comedy partnership with Chong. Marin’s own comedy movie “Born in East L.A.,” departed from the San Fernando Valley featured in “La Bamba,” and returned to East Los Angeles. After “Born in East L.A.,” Mexican-American movies again started moving back to the Mexican-American experience in and around East Los Angeles, something that “Zoot Suit” first offered us a heavy and emotional glimpse of in 1981. Marin’s “Born in East L.A.” continued to feature familiar faces, including Alma Martinez, who appeared in “Zoot Suit.” Martinez most recently appeared in Netflix’s “Gentefied.” While “La Bamba” might have helped garner more attention to Mexican-American movies across the US, it was after “Born in East L.A.” that more movies really began to depict a more familiar, true-to-life experience that is still largely relatable. But we still get a little bit of an homage to Valens and “La Bamba” in “Born in East L.A.” And naturally, it’s Daniel Valdez who mistakes “Twist & Shout” for “La Bamba” in the movie. Stand and Deliver (1988) To cap the decade, in 1988 “Stand and Deliver” offered a completely different story than “Zoot Suit,” the Mexican-Amer-

Olmos, Phillips, DeSoto, Martinez, and Daniel Valdez all appeared in at least two of the films. But beyond featuring some relatable and recurring faces on camera, three of the movies, “Zoot Suit,” “La Bamba,” and “Stand and Deliver,” all tackle real-life events. They all shed light on and manage to capture the emotion of each real-life situation. From the sad tales in “Zoot Suit,” a movie that shows characters suffering the consequences of the perspective white America has of them. To “Stand and Deliver,” a story and film about students getting ahead despite the world being against them. And somewhere in the middle, “La Bamba” and “Born in East L.A.” capture the duality of success and failure among Latinxs. In one case, Valens realizes the American Dream as a famous rock star in the 1950s. In complete contrast, Marin’s character shows the grittier side of life for Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and Latinxs in the US through a story about deportation. Therefore, when I was notified that Baseball is officially back, I was so happy because it was going to be super hard not knowing if there was ever going to be baseball this season.” On the other hand, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has been making MLB feel the burn by being an advocate for minor-league players for a couple of years now to receive equal pay because their monthly stipend is not enough for the young players to make a decent living while fulfilling their dream. In contrast, according to MLB columnist and Insider Bob Nightengale for USA Today in relation to the MLB lockout, the Vermont Senator sent a statement to the press in response to the agreement to end the MLB Lockout (on introducing a new legislation to end MLB’s antitrust exemption.) “ It would be wrong for Congress to simply celebrate today’s agreement and move on. We must prevent the green of baseball’s oligarchs from destroying the game. The best way to do that is to end MLB’s antitrust exemption and I will be introducing legislation to do just that.” This threat by MLB Put the players' livelihood by canceling the 2022 regular season immediately, player pay would not be recouped, and games would not be reduced . Nevertheless,
both sides couldn’t reach an agreement by February 28 and for roughly 2 weeks players’ livelihood in Jeopardy. Meanwhile, on March 9 the MLB lockout was gaining positive traction When MLB columnist and insider Bob Nightingale from USA Today told Ben Verlander of the Flippin Bats Podcast in regards to (MLB and MLBPA being on the same page.) “ I think the MLB in the MLBPA are making progress on a new CBA deal that will be done by tomorrow Wednesday, March 8th.” Immediately, Mr. Nightingale's appearance on the Flippin Bats Podcast two days prior, hey sources or spying on because a deal was agreed-upon two days later on March 10. As a result, MLB free agency immediately resumed and spring training has already begun on March 11. Did you just say that? I’m sorry I must have missed a beat. The message has been lost in translation, our discussion is at its end. Still unsure of what you said…I’m scared to ask you to repeat it. Your patience wears thin as my confusion reaches its peak. My words sound empty while yours pack a punch. We’ve been here before, the déjà vu waves back at me. Where did we go wrong in this verbal game of chess? The message is now clear, we are getting nowhere
